it will be interesting to see you react to this amazing story. My "reading" of the funeral scene is that she was not surprised by Himmel's mortality, but by her own reaction to it. She expected to be sad, but not heartbroken. I think she is surprised by the fact that the death of someone she knew for what an elf sees as too short a time to get atached could affect her so much. I think she is not wondering what her feelings are, but why she is feeling them for this specific person and/or period of her life. Why was Himmel so important to her ? And why didn't she realize it sooner ?

I dont think its quite that. I think she was knew logically that human lives were short, but she has been so out of touch and been dissociating from normal lives for so long that she had really forgotten just how short they are, and how precious the connections made over short times can be.

In case you didn’t know, you might recognise this show’s director, Saitou Keiichirou (斎藤圭一郎), from his previous work, a little known show called Bocchi The Rock you may or may not have heard of.

@@eurobradyanother thing, i heard you were watching Violet Evergarden? (I just started watching the video, so dont know if you know this already) but the composer of Violet Evergarden also made the OST for Frieren, the composer is one of my fav anime composers atm. And Violet Evergarden is my fav anime of all time... dont know if frieren will end up snatching that spot yet though.

Japanese anime usually use "music list method" which using pre-composed music for BGM because of cost matter. But Frieren's first 4 episodes uses film scoring, which compose for each scene.

Hey there! Unfortunately Chainsaw Man did not end up making it on to RUclips since I've moved on from anime analysis. It just became too cumbersome to get things onto RUclips so it had to be hosted elsewhere. The reaction series is on the video archive through patreon though if you're interested in checking it out, along with all of the other shows we watched. I can also recommend my friend and colleague Psyculturists, who is still making psychological analysis on anime content and I believe he reviewed Chainsaw Man as well.

Yeah, I can see that. A great example of why I also think that this should be taken into consideration would be stuff like; Mushoku Tensei's opening songs where it's very in tune with the overall vibes of the series, and on some episodes they even integrate it with the scenes itself.

Brady, you should dig into Suzume(2022 すずめの戸締り:Suzume's door closing). The movie's theme contains psychological mechanism of "closing chapter" which also Frieren's theme does.
Original name of Frieren is 葬送のフリーレン(Frieren the Funereal or Frieren the Mourn). I think your cognitive psychology works well to both pieces.
