    I assume Frierens gasp at 19:42 meant she realized that Himmel is truly gone. For someone that has different view on time this kind of realization could be plausible. It could also be that she tried to bury sadness or something at first, until Church Bell rang its farewells to soul.
    Merry Christmas for everyone here! 🐀

      it hits different... not the same thing but when we see our pet grows old we first don't let it sink in until its days are counted. usually we barely notice when its no longer a baby.
      when it dies... we realize something has ended in our lives... something we can't access again...
      sure her life is far longer than him but she realizing she missed everything about him because how short his life was... despite how valueable he was to her as a companion, something literally breaks inside the person when you realize you didn't have "next day" for your beloved companion after he passes away

    • @KahavaveCAPIPI
      @KahavaveCAPIPI 7 месяцев назад +15

      I think its less of a realizing he's truly gone and more that it took a while for her to meet up "This person means a lot to me" with "I wasted the opportunity to spend time with them" and "I'll never get another chance".

      Himmel once said "Tears should never accompany departure; I prefer to believe that as long as we continue traveling, we could meet each other again. If we cry, it would be embarrassing when that happens.”
      Maybe Frieren thought of that, and realized death meant it was never going to happen again.

    Being naturally empathetic is one aspect of Elves in some stories, not the case here. Frieren is more cold and logical than empathetic because of her lifespan.

    • @lordomacron3719
      @lordomacron3719 7 месяцев назад +12

      And maybe just tad of childhood trauma. But saying anything more would be spoilers. Just saying that early events in Frieren life might have an influence on her ability to form emotional attachments which became a lifelong habit.

    • @crispycreammcfly4782
      @crispycreammcfly4782 3 месяца назад

      @karatsukiawildfemboy2326 I didn't say her past has anything to do with it, I said her lifespan affects it, like it affects most elves in Frieren, most likely.

    • @shawnpatrick1877
      @shawnpatrick1877 2 месяца назад +1

      I woud argue that Frieren IS naturally empathetic and emotional, she just hides it well in the same way she hides her Mana. Her supression of her Mana is almost an obvious allegory for it. She doesn't show others what she really is. She also lived alone for centuries and is therefore socially awkward. Then there's the childhood trauma. It's kind of implied that she's cold on purpose as a front so that she doesn't get too attached to people. Yes, her long life has a lot to do with how she seems selfish or doesn't think about the time of others, but as the story goes on, it's obviously more than that. It's also obvious that she was always thoughtful and sentimental in a number of ways long before Himmel died and she started consciusly being more thoughtful of others. It's a reoccurring theme in the series. Most of what she does with spell collecting is for remembering her mentor or her friends.

    • @crispycreammcfly4782
      @crispycreammcfly4782 2 месяца назад

      @@shawnpatrick1877 Maybe, but I wouldn't say she's any more empathetic than anyone else because she's an elf.

      And one thing I noticed, the anchor point of time in this show is after Himmel's death. It's always an x amount of years after his death. Before Frieren and Himmel met, she was just wondering around for centuries, with no perception of time. But after his death, this is her realization on how much time affects the world around her. She wants to get to understand humans more because she didn't get to understand Himmel enough. So that is why Himmel's death is the anchor of time in this series, because this is the _beginning_ of _time_ in Frierens perspective.

    I just caught up to the series a bit ago so it's nice to see Alicia's reactions while I wait for next episode.
    It was a laugh when she said she wouldn't cry first episode. It really hits in the feels because Himmel dies of old age and yet Frieren still has regrets. Normally a death in anime is the result of violence, sickness, or tragedy. So the focus on the inevitability of aging and death from the perspective of an elf and how it impacts her is deeply touching. Into the chest to squeeze your heart and make you cry.

    Frieren is imho the anime of the year just to due to getting feelings out of people on the first ep. Being the old man of my friend group, it got me really thinking on my own life and how things are and how they could have been different if I wasn't so... distance or silent. People gone, both dead or just out of state never to be seen again. The show hits harder the older you are I feel. Really got me to reach out me to my friends, even with the extra peak season hours I have been put in the past month.
    I'm up to ep 14 as I have been enjoying the dub and just... I haven't been this in love with anime sense Attack on Titan season 1. I loved Gundam tWoM, but this just hits on such a personal level.

    So regarding the groups ageing I have a theory. I think the presence of that shadow horn actually made Himmel physically age faster and that's one of the reasons he looks so much older than Heiter. I also suspect Himmel was actually older than Heiter to begin with but was aging quite gracefully before the horn

    I love the fact that Frieren is this old, wise mage, that consistantly always falls for the mimic trap, EVERY TIME. Plus her personality is a mix of childishness and little old lady. Shes aloof and mysterious, but also low-key weird and kinda goofy. Shes very powerful and wise in her own way, but also simply adores finding and learning unique, wierd and quirky hedge-spells with little to no practical use, or extremely niche, simplybecause she enjoys it.

    This is how I choose to watch Frieren, cause I've not seen the anime adaptation. I just started reading the manga maybe a month before the adaptation was announced, and I've read through Volume 8 of the serialization, but not watched the anime. As long as it holds true to the source, this ought to be a wholesome* little ride.
    Aside from that, this series' take on what are functionally immortal beings living among mortals may just be my favorite I've seen. Time is _relative._ If you live thousands of years, what's 10? Even a human life is just a blip, so how are you expected to form relationships with them? But that's the thing, you *can,* and they *do* matter. It's a beautiful exploration of that.

    One of the best things about this series is it's a fantastic example of how an anime adaptation can actually enhance a series. My friend let me know about this when he heard of it so I went and looked up the manga. In a recent episode a simple one panel scene was fleshed out into a much more impactful one. Also, the show goes on to answers questions relatively quickly so don't be afraid to ask them because you wont have to wait long.

    One thing I love about this show is how absolutely long the adventures take. It's not like in games or other shows where "We're traveling to X," and they're there in a couple days. The land is MASSIVE, and travel takes time, quests take time, training takes time. You won't be an adventurer who did P, Q, and R; you'll be _the_ adventurer who did Y only. Sure, there were loads of things on the way, but that one quest took 10 years.

How many new human friends would Shayleigh come to know and love in those centuries? Would the memory of Danica withstand the test of such a long time, or would she become just a fleeting moment of Shayleigh's future reveries? Been watching Frieren as it has come out, an absolutely top notch show, and you are in for a great experience.
    Would love for you to watch the relatively feel good show called "My Love Story!!", it is my wife and I's absolutely favorite rom-fom/slice of life show of all time... with Re:Life a close second.

    26:46 I'm slow and didn't catch this when I first saw it until the reveal.
    (Or maybe because it was also early morning around 3am)

    I really liked hearing your thoughts on the cinematography (e.g. 20-80 rule), it was really interesting for me.

    Dwarves in terms of general fantasy lore live a long time as well, but it's usually still shorter than elves. In D&D, Elves can live to around 750 maybe to 1000 and Dwarves to about 350. In this world though it seems elves can live potentially for millennia.

      Of all the things in anime, I didn't think I'd have my emotions so thoroughly thrashed by an elf serving a boy a Hamburger Steak.

    Frieren is an amazing anime….Its actually done right. No over the top action scenes every episodes with hentai angles. No useless story that involves useless main characters. Its genuinely well done.

    Yeah, I noticed that the artstyle makes me feel vibes similar to some of those older Ghibli movies. Which I find quite fitting.

    Didn't expect you watching Frieren, but I'm actually glad you are because this is one of the best series to come out this season in my opinion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

    Everyone is afraid of dying, it's just easier to forget the younger you are. Even religious people who claim to "know" in their heart there's an afterlife still have that voice in the back of their head telling them there isn't, the voice of reason. And the older they get, the louder that truth is.

    20:12 Eerie: she didn't say anything in that moment. It was a gasp because it dawned on her what she addressed in the next scene.
    That's at least how I'm reading that scene.

    This has been a glorious rewatch. It's actually crazy how much foreshadowing is going on. That line near the end were she told Heiter that he wasn't Himmel put me in tears 😢

    i love how their names are al just german words. himmel is sky. eisen is iron. heiter is well i dont think there is an english equivilant but i guess its close to the word spiritual and frieren means freezing

    I say this on like every reaction series, but man, I really like Heiter as a character. They do so much in proportion to his screentime to endear and/or fascinate me to his character.

    The good news is that Frieren frontloads a lot of the tear-jerker stuff. The bad news it that doesn't mean it's over, not by a long shot.
