I'm a RUclips certified mechanic. I just added your video to my resume! Thanks dude. I don't know jack about engines and I just cleaned the carb (thanks to you) and now my mower works! Great video. Great teaching.
Adam, this video was AWESOME. I have a Yard Machine String Trimmer that has not ran in more than 2 years. I followed your instruction in this video and my trimmer started on the very first pull. I was about to take it to the repair shop which would have cost me atleast $80.00 - $100.00 to repair, with your help I repaired it without spending one cent. I already had all the items you mentioned in you video. AWESOME!!! Keep post GREAT video like this
Thanks for a thorough and concise tutorial! I've never done any maintenance on my mower before, but cleaning the carburetor was a snap after watching this.
Your step by step for taking the carburetor apart, cleaning it and putting it back was one of the best on you tube I've seen. Cleaned the jets with the wire from the bread tie, blew it with some compressed canned air, rinsed in some clean gas , assembled it back and it started on the first pull. Thanks for the video
And the beat goes on! Just followed these directions (for my 6 hp Briggs & Stratton) and fixed it completely. Before: no starting whatsoever. After: started on the FIRST PULL. Thank you!!
This was the video I needed I had my Briggs all cleaned but I put it back together wrong at the float assembly where the pointed thing sits in the gap and I had it outside I knew something wasn't right now it's running like a champ. I also noticed a bunch of dirt sediment in my gas that was obviously causing the clog not sure how so much gets through the tank filter.
Thanks, I stripped mine apart and something fall. I put the carburetor back together and petrol pissed out, I then went and looked in the shed move things around and found a silver pin pointed at one end and the other a flat end. So I turned to RUclips and found your post, saw the pin (On The float) and now all OK thanks
I took my B&S carb apart to fix the float needle and spent 2 hours trying to figure out how to put it back in. Was I excited when you showed that in the first few seconds of the video! I'm going on to a couple of line trimmers and a chainsaw next. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video. I took off and cleaned a b&g carb (full of rust) from a mower that sat for two years and wouldn't even try to turn over. Put it back together, one pull and it's purring like a cat!
I just cleaned out a Tecumseh carb and the hidden jet was clogged with a hard substance that the carb cleaner could not remove. I instead used a sewing needle to remove it. Anyhow it runs now.
Thanks for the vid. I have a Simplicity tractor that I bought new ten years ago and used it one summer. Then I sent it to my dad's place and he never used it....so it has been parked for nine years in the garage. Just got it back and finally got it to turn over....however, it will run for 5 seconds then shut off. My guess is I need to clean the carb. He did empty the fuel...but I'm sure it's pretty dan gummed up.
Thanks for saving me a chunk of change. I'm not a mechanic and was somewhat intimidated about taking apart the carb on my ready-start pressure washer that wouldn't start. Cleaned it per your instructions, and put it back on. It started right up on the first pull. Incidentally, I thought I lost the rubber needle seat; I just want other viewers to know that some seats are brass.
That bolt holding on the cup on most small engine carburetors is the main jet. The tube which Mr. Pennington referred to as the jet is the emulsion tube. It is important also to remove any gaskets (especially rubber ones) because the carburetor cleaner will distort and misshape them causing them not to seal correctly.
thanks man,,. this helps me with my mower its a scotts riding mower.. its got some trash in the carb.. did not know what to do.. I appreciate the video.. thanks..
Alright. After 5 hours I got my lawn mower fixed. Thank You. For those watching the video, replace the air filter, sparkplug, and fuel each season. If all else fails, its your carburetor. Make sure you wear goggles when spraying it with carburetor cleaner. Don't be like me spraying a shit ton on your face and almost going blind...
Great video Adam! Very helpful and informative. Watch out for WD-40, though, it is a good lubricant but it does eat rubber. I use Liquid Wrench on any part that has rubber seals or rubber parts such as diaphragms, belts or even tires!!
If one can soak the carburetor for several days in a submerged container of gasoline ( make sure the gasoline completely covers carburetor ) it always seems to do better for me in the past and a much easier process when cleaning it . Worked on an old Honda carburetor and it just wouldn't run right after I had cleaned it out once already . I soaked it for three days and blowed it our one final time and it must have loosened up something - for it started running perfect . Food for thought - when all else fails .
you actually can spray down in the seat if there is varnish but make sure u rinse it out right away with a penetrating lubricant like wd40 or pb blaster because it will swell up. even the bowl gaskets if you get it on them it will swell up in fact I already did before and I winded up with a bowl gasket about a half inch too wide in diameter haha nice demonstration people should learn this alot of mowers and others things get throwbout because of this reason and they are often fairly new mowers
true true. Lately I've found it easier to stay away from the seat altogether. That is unless it's already swollen making the float sit at a higher angle, or varnish is present. In both cases it's good idea to replace the seat.
I've been told that ethanol in modern gas attacks the needle seat, which is neoprene or some other synthetic elastomer sunstance -- how often should the seat be replaced, and how can one tell when it's ready to be replaced?
My, craftsmen sit mower will turn over, but won't start. My oil is almost black. Again, I turn the key, fan and battery turn over, but, mower will not start. HELP!!!!!!
hi adam i have a lawn mower and i follow your carb clean procedure my engine start right away but still make noise behind the gouvernor little arm what can i do to stop that rattle
I had to replace the primer bulb with the hole in the center, but now the gas runs out of the tank all the time. How do I stop it Briggs and Stratton 6.75 , give me a hint as to why the gas keeps running out unless I tip it back to change the strings, other wise the whole tank will drain completely.
Don’t forget cleaning that jet you took from the fuel bowl. That’s a lot of times the issue. Good video though. Was trying to show my father in law a good tutorial
Hi, I just did this and got my mower working however I have a problem. The mower is supped up LOL. It now runs loud and it actually used a full tank of gas in 30 minutes instead of my usual hour. I am under the impression the needle needs adjusting. from what I have read I need to lower the needle I believe. Thoughts?
Fixed it. I must have forgot to put the metal wire through the carburator top plastic piece. Of course it meant taking everthying back apart but the carburater to fix it, but it works good.....for now lol.
I know this is a old Post but hoping I can get some help. The only way my Briggs will start is if I squirt carb cleaner into the intake side. It will fire up then literally die. I found there was no gas in the bowl even when gas turned on. Luckily that part was a simple fix but it still won't start. Any ideas?
Sounds like a straight forward carburetor issue. If you've thoroughly cleaned the carburetor as the video depicts, replaced the bowl gasket, mounted it correctly and snug, and there is now actually fuel in the bowl- It might be time for a new or used replacement. Having been through hundreds, some carbs go beyond reasonable repair. Cheers!
Hi, Adam, glad to see you're still helping people on this video. I've taken the carburetor off of my B&S lawnmower engine three times now, to clean it. I was getting surging, difficulty starting, and sometimes engine dying issues. I'm using carb cleaner, and this last time I used welder's tip cleaners to really get into those tiny holes. I've also cleaned the fuel tank, which was filthy, and I replaced the fuel line and added an inline filter. Additionally, I've replaced the float bowl gasket, the air cleaner housing gasket, and the primer bulb. These cleanings have always helped for a little while, but then the engine goes back to its old malfunctioning ways. I'm thinking my next corrective action might be to replace the rubber seat that the needle sits on. That's about the only thing that I haven't replaced, so far. What do you think? Could that be causing the issue?
I got carried away here focused on where to spray the carb cleaner. You should WD40 the throttle, and wiggle it back and forth to make sure it's freed up. All moving parts love lube.
No. All I can figure is that you may have torqued down the plastic so much that it finally created a seal. May not last long.. let me know it it does.. There are few ways to force those carbs to prime though.
I have a craftsman self propelled I have taken off the carburetor and cleaned it however there were to springs that came off and I don't know where they go. This is the only thing holding me up from having a running mower. Do you know where they go? or do you know where I can find a picture of where they go, thank you
Adam just wanted to say how much I appreciated you for sharing this video , it's a great video step by step one of the best that I watched on Utub , five stars myfriend 👏👏👌👍✌✌
I learned that old carbs on lawnmowers didn't have brass jets and instead used adjustable valve screws so when the lawnmower ran weak or surged you simply just opened-up the screw hole. Thanks to the EPA for making everyone's life difficult.
Roddy Da Carburetor cleaner if left long enough will cause the rubber seat as well as the bowl seal to swell and degrade. Best to remove components like these before cleaning.
Hi Adam, your video was excellent in explaining how to re-open the internal fuel passages of a BS carburetor housing. After sitting without running for a few years, the engine for my mother's power washer started NORMALLY after cleaning out the debris from the internal passages of the carb. Thanks so much!! I appreciate you for taking the time to share this information with everyone!

Got my lawnmower running tonight thanks to the instructions in this video :)

Dude awesome tutorial! Never took apart lawn mower before. Watched once, followed along. Got mower going in one pull!

Haha.. I'm in the exact same position now. Took it apart and have no idea how to put the needle back. Watching the video now.
Followed your steps exactly using bread tie wire. Put it back together and its running great. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I didn't know about the passages in the nut that holds the float bowl on. I think that was what was clogged.
Very good video. Thanks for helping people out on RUclips!
I followed your instructions and my string trimmer/ yard machine is working again. Thanks again for your help.
Thanks for the video. I took off and cleaned a b&g carb (full of rust) from a mower that sat for two years and wouldn't even try to turn over.
Put it back together, one pull and it's purring like a cat!
Excellent 👍 fixed my spluttering ride on Mountfield lawnmower, thank you.
Nice tutorial buddy. Thanks for taking your time to explain all of your knowledge. We all really appreciate it.
I just cleaned out a Tecumseh carb and the hidden jet was clogged with a hard substance that the carb cleaner could not remove. I instead used a sewing needle to remove it. Anyhow it runs now.
THANK YOU Adam! Success on 1st Pull !
Absolutely! Another successful customer.
Thanks a million! I followed this vid exactly and I was able to bring my mower to life on the first pull.
You rock, sir!
It’s been 6 years now how’s the mower still running? LoL
Thanks for the vid. I have a Simplicity tractor that I bought new ten years ago and used it one summer. Hey Adam GREAT video - thanks for posting. I'll be pulling my B&S carby on Saturday
Thank you for this video, I didn't even think to clean the bolt that holds on the cup - it was the culprit!

Thanks for your time I use torch tip cleaner from the welding supply store works great
thanks man,,. this helps me with my mower its a scotts riding mower.. its got some trash in the carb.. did not know what to do.. I appreciate the video.. thanks..
I REMOVE THE RUBBER SEAT AND REPLACE EVERY TIME I CLEAN THOSE CARBS.I NEVER RE-USE THE OLD ONE.WORKS 100% OF THE TIME.
Worked first time with Briggs Stratton carb!! Thanks for the helpful advice!!
Good job, thank you for sharing 👍
Thank you for a great tutorial. Easy to follow instructions. Saved me a small engine bill. Kudos!
Worked for me dude, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Sooooo happy! I followed this video and it worked :) Thanks so much!

Great Video. Curious as to what the wd40 is for?
Thanks. Carb cleaner wouldn't clean the holes, after I used a needle mower runs now!

Guitar string works too
nice video, thanks for the demonstration
My, craftsmen sit mower will turn over, but won't start. My oil is almost black. Again, I turn the key, fan and battery turn over, but, mower will not start. HELP!!!!!!
We need a o ring for the 625E series for the carbarater
this really helped, thx. cool presentation, btw
hi adam i have a lawn mower and i follow your carb clean procedure my engine start right away but still make noise behind the gouvernor little arm what can i do to stop that rattle
will electrical contact cleaner do?

Sounds like a carb issue 🤔 Have you changed the needle & seat?
Hi there i really like your youtube channel.
Can I use brake cleaner
What was the WD-40 for?
Are these carbs from lawn tractors? I don't see anything on mine that looks like that.
Some reason my gasket at the motor side pours out gas . Is it something to do with the float ?
Maybe the carb bowl gasket did not seat correctly when put back together. Was that the fix or is there still a challenge?
Don’t forget cleaning that jet you took from the fuel bowl. That’s a lot of times the issue. Good video though. Was trying to show my father in law a good tutorial
What do you normally use to clean
old tooth brush, bread tie, carb cleaner, wd40 , basics. Keep it clean 😉

Adam,
You should never ise wire to clean the tiny holes. Its best to use monofilament fishing line.
I know this is a old Post but hoping I can get some help. The only way my Briggs will start is if I squirt carb cleaner into the intake side. It will fire up then literally die. Do they make a fuel injected lawnmower yet
Thnx man this fkn toro is driving me nuts 👍
Thanks, off to the garage. Here goes nothin'.
Always glad to help!
this is the best of all the cleaning videos. yes, you need that bread tie wire to clean thoroughly.
Great video man! I was very frustrated with my mower. I did exactly what you said and it worked. Thank you so much.
I will try doing this, great video btw

I ain’t a smart feller. Can I do this?
Absolutely. I'm no Einstein either stogiedude. You can handle this job.
What do you do with the WD-40? I didn't see where that came into the video.
My old lawn boy Keeps sounding like it running at higher RPM then way lower other times
The butterfly or throttle is the most important part to WD40. The link to the vid is now in the description. ty
Did you forget what to say to do with the WD40? I didn't see the link that you mentioned would be In the description. Thanks!
Can you replace the float pin seat if you accidentally spray it?
Roddy Da Carburetor cleaner if left long enough will cause the rubber seat as well as the bowl seal to swell and degrade. Best to remove components like these before cleaning.
I have new weed eater im trying to find out how to startit
