Bought a cheap lawn mower and the Nikki carburetor was dirty causing the engine to surge. Here I show how I fixed it. If you are needing a rebuild kit this would cover it!

Factoring the cost difference between the rebuild kit and the new carb ($6 ($16 vs $22)), it seems a new carb is a better option. At least in terms of time saved. Nice video.
What if you put a new carb on an it still surges but when you turn the blades on it run smooth
@@tazduster Might wanna check your air fuel mixture screw
Hello.....I follwed your instructions exactly...but when I removed the solenoid the main jet fell out also...There was no spring on top of the jet....My mower was running but surging....now it won't start..can you give me some suggestions....Thanks
UPDATE:1 year and still cranks within the first 2-3 pulls. Probably will buy another when this one finally does bite the dust ruclips.net/user/postUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX . No issues at all. Very happy with it.UPDATE: After 6 months of use and over 70 uses I would still highly recommend this pressure washer. It does vibrate a decent amount but never had it “walk” like others have mentioned. No oil leaks, still seems to run like the day I bought it. Still cranks within 2-3 pulls every time. Very happy with my purchase!Have used it about a dozen times now. Plenty of power, cranks up on 1-2 pulls every time. My only complaint would be I wish it was a little taller to make it easier to walk with it (hits my ankles a lot) and that the two hose connections were a little further apart but it hasn’t caused me any issues. Seems to run a good 1-1/2-2 hrs on a full tank, overall a well built machine and definitely worth the money in my opinion.
Ok this is how you make a how to video, the problem, disassembly reassembly and test, clear instructions. None of that annoying music that drowns out explanations, no off conversations about cousin Jessy and his dog poontang. 👍👍👍👍👍
Lol, thanks for that!
I hate the ones with no dialogue where the guy has to inspect every part that he comes to as if he'd never seen one like it before.
SGT - I'm a little suspicious about you knowing about cousin Jessy and his dog Poontang. Hoorah!
But there is annoying music. Very informative though.
EXACTLY..........
Ryan, thanks for your good video. My Briggs and Stratton 16HP engine with Nikki carb was surging under load after being stored over winter with fuel in the carb. A full carb strip found no visible debris, no sticky gum deposits or anything similar. But, to be sure, all jets, carb fuel holes and airways blown thro with WD40 followed by a good spray thro with carb cleaner. All reassembled and then engine run smoothly.
You hit it right on the money! That's exactly what mine is doing. I will follow your instructions and get back with the results. Thanks, great video.
thank you that was great. by the way you are one of the only folks who starts the machine up after procedure. super grateful
My Gravely ZT-34 with B&S Intek was surging like this one - After watching this, spent an hour in the shed listening to Spotify and did exactly as you showed here. The only difference with my carb was that there was no air-fuel mixture screw like @2:48, otherwise it was identical. The air bleed @3:48 was partially clogged needed a fine wire and a few blasts of carb cleaner to dislodge the obstruction. After cleaning, put it back together and that engine was running smooth again. Thanks for a fantastic video with no rambling!
Great video, my tractor had an idle surge after sitting for a year. Rebuilt the carb and nothing really changed. After watching this video I realized the mistakes I made when I rebuilt it. Second time around after rebuild the tractor runs fantastic. Again thanks for the video.
Great short, concise and to the point instructions. Excellent! Thank you.
Actually the first video I have seen on your channel. Excellent close-ups, perfect bolt/nut size prepping, and proven techniques. Instant subscriber after 1 vid :)
Michael Jude I appreciate it.
This the clearest explanation of the carb cleaning process I have seen.
Thank you! My exact model of mower and exact problem! Now I have to mow the lawn! No more excuses.
Great video, fixed my problem, same symptom you had. I found a partially blocked float seat. Great video explain it all without the nonsense. Thanks, From Australia
I like how you said everything you needed to say and nothing extra, to much conversation can confuse the whole concept! Good job sir and thank you for your time. Peace ✌️
This guy is the best at explaining things I have come across
That is a VERY well balanced engine. Hardly any vibration at all!
Thanks
I really liked the way you presented this all the way down to wrench size. Great job.
Just a tip, but it you take a standard bread twist tie and burn off the plastic coating with a lighter, it makes an excellent rod to use for cleaning orifices on a carb with. It is just the right size and can be used many times in the future.
you are the reason why i have 50 bread bag ties now, my wife hates you.
I guess you'd have to be very careful not to leave a bit of burned plastic or glob of soot on that metal strand after burning it. The last thing you'd want to to is poke some crap into the jets...!
Very informative got a lawn mower and a Tiller doing the same thing thank you very much for the info
I just left your channel after a few minutes not because I didn't like what you were showing but because you were giving a great amount of awesome information about a machine I don't own. I came back to provide a thumbs up and make this comment just to thank you for your efforts. Keep doing your thing brother!
Very good tutorial, will be doing this to my Craftsman 18 HP tractor. Thanks for the upload.
Telling us what size wrenches and sockets to use is a big time saver, for sure!
Thank you for this video, help me solve this irritating surging condition. Found what looks like carbon around the fuel mixture screw and the low speed jet, cleaned all orfice/holes with welder tip cleaning kit. Works like a charm. Took me three time though.
I”m on my 2nd time. Evens out at high speed, but surges at low and medium. Getting there.
The main jet fell out of mine when I removed the pan. Wasn't positive that's where it went. I must have watched a hundred videos before I found this one. And they were no help at all. Your a life saver. Great video. Thanks
All the other videos show the main jet going in from the other side.
this video was very informative i did everything in it and now my lawnmower runs perfect thanks for the help
My lawnmower 16 1/2 Briggs & Stratton gets hot and does that surging. I just can’t picture how a Stone Age design carburetor that comes on a lawnmower works. I’m going to clean my carburetor tomorrow and hope this surging thing stops. Thanks for the good video, I would never have guessed that a dirty carburetor could cause surging, I thought it was the governor doing it, we will see
You saved me a bunch of time and money. I had the solenoid go out and clogged carb at the same time. Thanks!!!!!
Man... I think I'm just going to buy a new carburetor. I'm glad you showed me this!
Thankyou for showing me how to fix my problem.
And thankyou for just getting right to it.
Other people are just too long winded.
Just fixed a surging B&S engine thanks to you! Using a bristle from a wire brush to clean all the channels was what I needed to do to get it running great. +1 subscriber!
Swap the carb to the Walbro type and trash the NIKKI is what most people do. Crossing it over is fairly simple, just get the right size horsepower engine carb with same linkage. Those Nikkis are a nighmare, flooding and rough idle.
Hi Ryan. Many thanks for a great video. A family friend asked for help with a surging Craftsman ride on mower. The fix went to your script - gunk in the carburettor bowl and jets. Running sweet now. Thanks again from Australia.
Australia? Wow, Always loved to visit there. That is awesome to hear and I appreciate you stopping by and letting us know.
straight forward and to the point, thanks
thanks!!! i bought same used and it looked like it was never done thanks to your tutorial i just did it !!👍🏽
Looks like my try to fix same carb issue needs to be revisited. Thanks for the video.
I bought a used Honda push mower almost 6 years ago from the furniture store I work at. Everytime I'm finished cutting, I shut off the fuel and let the mower run out of gas. Also use non- ethanol gas. Only paid $75 for it 6 years ago, run fine.
Great info...plain and simple....Thank you my friend !
Awesome video very informative
Fixed my exact problem. Thanks for taking the time to make this video👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Really clear thanks gotta be careful with all those little parts
My mower sounds about like this so I followed these steps, great instructions I was able to clean it and put it back together but unfortunately my mower still sounds rough.
Thanks
I am a Carpenter not a mechanic when it comes to something as simple as taking the carburetor apart and putting it back on I hate it absolutely hate doing it but you make it seem so easy I guess I'll give it a shot thanks a lot for saving me some money$$$
Hi clean the carburetor and the main jet and blew out all the passages on my Briggs & Stratton 16 1/2 horse tractor today. It runs perfectly now. I put up with that surging for years.. A good small cleaning probe that I use in carburetors is the crop and cut off of a guitar string. This video save me from going out and buying a new tractor/lawnmower
Money Saved is Money Earned!
A guitar string...I'll get one..I've been using torch tip cleaners and sometimes a twist tie off a loaf of bread..
I'll try the guitar string thanks Cheers 🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great instructions - thanks so much!
I found that a torch head cleaning tool works best for cleaning the holes. It have a lot different sizes and they are stiff.Cost about $3 or $4 dollars can get them at walmart.
Great job man you are the only independent DIY fixer I have ever seen with great quality clear details and I love the way you have the background music, keep at it man.
I appreciate that comment. I just hate watching tutorials that leave so much out.
Nice video. I heard that some people didn’t like it. If it makes you feel any better I’m am an Emmy winner with several more nominations that messes with old lawn mower engines. It’s good work. Working with engines is so relaxing.
See, you get it. It takes me back to when I was a kid and my Dad and I would be tinkering with things. Now I do it with my kids. Breathing life back into any old machine is highly satisfying.
That surge sounds exactly like my JD D110. Thanks for the video!
nice.
i like to just add some cleaner to the fuel like berryman's and run it awhile. then if it does not clear up i tie into the carb.
Nice clear instructional video. Well done.
Excellent. Trying this cleanup in the am 👍🏻
steel electric guitar strings typically are .009 up to .046 in 6 strings an dare about $6 a pack. Make several cleaner wires from each string (maybe 4-7 wires).... and the steel is very strong and flexible
Good Video
i will have to do that on the 2014 briggs snow shredder
runs smooth with half choke on
About 6 yrs ago I bought a new riding mower. It looked just like the one in this video. I may have used it a total of 10 times. It had less than 25 hrs on it. Then someone set the house on fire. The fire got the living room an kitchen an part of the garage. About a year later I got to fooling around with the mower. All the wiring was burnt as well as the seat an steering wheel. So I got to fooling around with it, I took off all the wiring. The gas tank had melted, so I poured some gas down the carb. and jumped it off. And the thing started right up. I found another mower looked to be about the same thing, just not as in good of shape. It was all I could find at the time. Started swaping parts around and put together a half A** mower. It works but its nothing like what I had. But I am thankful for what I have. After I got the engine put onto the other mower I rebuilt the carb. changed the oil and air filters and for good measure put in a new plug. I use it last summer.
William Wynn I remember my dad bought a brand new one, a V twin about 18HP, it ended up being replaced with another after being stolen. He had about 1.5 acres on a slope and a remember a row of 1 gallon petrol cans by the gate when he was using it.
My wife and I have much less money, we have about 1.5 acres on a slope too and I spent less than half as much as he did on an ancient Kubota B4200. It was only about 12HP, although it only used about a pint of diesel to do a very similar job, four wheel drive helped too.
William Wynn
Bravo!
Glad to see someone salvaging things instead of throwing them away:)
Thanks, great video. Saved my ass I almost went and bought me a new lawn tractor .
Fabulously done, thank you
A welding tip cleaner also works for cleaning the orifices and small air bleed passage ways.
The anti backfire solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor does not stop fuel from going into the float bowl , the float needle seat is what controls the amount of fuel that is allowed into the float bowl, as the fuel level rises in the float bowl the float raises up to the point that it pushes the inlet needle seat up into the main fuel inlet and seals the inlet closed until the fuel in the float bowl is used some and as the fuel level drops in the float bowl so does the float which allows the needle seat to drop down enough to allow fuel to refill the float bowl until it is full and the process repeats itself over and over ! The anti backfire solenoid is controlled by the ignition switch when it is turned on 12 volts is sent to the coil inside the anti backfire solenoid which creates a magnetic field that pulls the pin downward on the anti backfire solenoid itself ( located up inside the carburetor ) this allows fuel to enter the main jet located in the center of the carburetor, when the ignition switch is turned off the magnetic field dissipates and the rubber plug on the end of the pin goes back up to contact the Bottom of the main jet sealing it off so fuel cannot go through the main jet as the engine idles down to a stop ,, if fuel goes in the main jet as engine idles down to a stop it will be sucked into the intake manifold and the fuel will ignite inside the combustion chamber making a loud pop as it does ! This happens when people discover the anti backfire solenoid is bad , bad coil inside , and they cut the pin off the plunger of the anti backfire solenoid, or when the pin gets stuck in the down position which would be ignition on position ( which is rare but does happen due to ethanol gummed up pins ) and the mower will crank and run but when shut off will backfire because of the solenoid valve being open not closing off the fuel to the main jet !
Wow, you’re so knowledgeable! Thanks for your help for everyone here!❤
good to see someone here knows what that solenoid is for other than myself.....ive had countless arguements over its function in the carb.....ive lost count the number of these nikki carbs i have serviced/repaired over the years.....if you have a good look, the pin has already been cutoff in this video clip....and the main jet is positioned wrong (held with a spring)....so even IF the solenoid had its plunger button still attached, it wouldnt work anyways
False
Thank you so much 💓. Your tutorial is very useful. You are a great teacher.
This was good just what I needed to know , have a D110 John Deer looks like the same motor doing the exact same thing . The deer people told me need a new carb . I 'm trying this first . Thank you
Let us know how it goes!
good video. no time consuming jabber and lots of helpful information
I like the music and Shazam found it. Airstream Trailer by Walter Cianciusi. Will buy it.
Love that SC cap!!!
You are too cool!!! Not my problem, I have a small B&S lawnmower that does this, but I'm looking for a deal on a riding lawnmower with this problem just so I can watch this again...! :)
Great video. You explain well!
Nice direct to the point video well done .
Good instructional vid, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it
Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Great video! Super helpful! Thank you!
Great tutorial 😀
Very good explanation. Thank you.
Good Engine. I have on Z turn Lawn Mower.
Excellent video. Super clear.
i just ran a bottle of lucas fuel injector cleaner through mine. solved the problem.
Good job, Ryan.
Like the video , 99 cents torch tip file and orifice cleaning tool is what I use , it has a 3 inch wire from 00.01 up to 00.90 wire brush wire is fine but short hard to hold on to .
Did this too a craftsman lt200 today off CL for $100, worked like a charm bro 👍
Todd007tl nothing wrong with that!
Good informative video, thank you.
Watched video. Did exactly as shown. Fixed problem. Looked like hero to girlfriend. Nice video thanks
NICE tutorial!!!!! NO BS!!! Right to business! AWESOME!!
Excellent video, thank you!
Welders tip cleaner kit works great cleaning small holes.
🤘thatnk you sir I'm definitely gonna do that this weekend
Thank you you just solve the same problem I have
Great video man - straight to business. Nice work!
I was just doing this on my tiller and realized that a short piece of a guitar string works perfectly for cleaning the various small orifices in a carburetor. The thicker wound top strings are rough, so they're almost like a gentle file.
Dude great video, good camera detail on the carb.
Good tips. Thanks.
Great video! Thanks.
Great video thank you, I’m going to try that.👍🏻
Before opening up the carb, clean the outside well.
Well done.
to tight valve lash setting will cause surging as well.... seafoam will usually clear carb. IF used properly.....
Great video. Thanks for the help
Great deal on that mower Ryan.
Great video. Gave me the confidence to try my first carb cleaning. Almost all good. At 2:36 to 2:46 it shows the main jet inserted into the end fuel transfer tube. That wasn't right for me. I didn't note where mine was while disassembling it. First I knew about the main jet was it falling into the bowl I was working over. Anyway, I put it back like in this video. It didn't work, engine would just crank and crank. It didn't seem like the carb was drawing fuel from the bowl. Much confusion and frustration! A few other videos show it dropped down the tube from the gasket side. That worked for me. Engine started first time then! Maybe two very similar models?
Good work
Great video man!! Thanks so much!
Great video. Thanks a million. Saved my a couple hundred bucks
Get yourself a torch tip cleaner you'll be glad you did. Great vid.
Straight up explanation. Good Job. Question for you? My briggs is tossing smoke back up into the air breather. Is the crankcase stuffed up???
Thank you for the great video.
Great video. No BS and very thorough. Thanks.
Great show, common problem on mowers
Jim Clarke
Because ethanol sucks.
Although in some areas they offer the super that’s non ethanol.
