Have you no clue who you are viewing here? This man is the world's smartest engine repair and teacher man you or I will ever know . Easy common sense is what is taught here . Thanks much love your vids ! !
It’s so simple when you finally get it! The governor gear has a maximum throttle position and the carburetor has a maximum throttle position. You are trying to synchronize them. Synchronizing the maximum positions let’s the governor do its job. But adjusting spring tension is how you set the engine RPM that you want when the throttle lever is at maximum! Great video!
Thanks Taryl. Saved my day. I took off crankcase cover and realized I had no idea how the governor went back together. Last small engine I did was 30 years ago with fan blown governor. Your videos filled in all the gaps. One thing though, when I followed your instructions exactly it came out all wrong. The engine would race way too fast. The problem was that this is a chipper with with the cutter wheel right on the crankshaft, no gears. Half throttle was as fast as you would ever want it to go. So, instead of holding the throttle at full when tightening the lever to the crank, I held it at half throttle. This must be how it was done at the factory because it worked the same way as brand new. Thanks again for the videos. Gotta say I appreciated the camera work.
Just fixed a Dr.Field Brush Mower with a Kawasaki 17hp motor following your instructions. I loosened the governor control arm bolt, shimmed the control arm so that the link to the carb was full open. The control arm had a through hole in it, so a put a small Allen wrench through the hole to rotate the shaft (verses your plier method) ( hats off the the Kawasaki employee who came up with adding the hole). Re tightened the control arm bolt and the motor fired up and ran through the throttle purrrrfectly. Thanks Taryl!
Hello Taryl, Thanks for this great video. I've been having some issues with my 14.5 hp Intek engine surging. I figured it was something with the carb. So I took it apart and cleaned it. It was very clean and everything seemed good. Put it back on and still the surging. The weird part is it got worse as it warmed up. I watched this video and thought this sounds like maybe my governor is a little worn out and needs to be tightened up. Low and behold I moved it about a quarter of an inch. It's now running perfectly. Thanks for this great video. Mike von Schlederer
TARYL IS THE MAN! I had a 14.5 hp B & S that would either idle or run 9k rpm. Did some research and found that the previous owner had removed that pinch bolt on the governor arm. I replaced the bolt but was unsure of how to adjust the governor until I watched this. Thanks again!
You are sure it was 9K measured, not 8800rpm or 9140rpm ? I wouldn't be surprised if you had neighbors one with a B&S head on their head, another with a rod sticking out of their neck, and one with a crank stuck in his ... At such speeds wear eye protection and hydrate adequately ...
Taryl, I downloaded the OEM Kohler Service Manual and read the page on adjusting the governor, and it was very confusing. Then I watched your video twice. Then I adjusted the governor in about 3 minutes and it runs perfectly now! Thank you for your awesome videos!
Taryl, Your a life saver. I have a 8 HP Briggs built around 1988 on a generator and this thing kept surging. Once I looked at your video I re adjusted that governor and it started purring like a kitten. It also was a little high on the RPM (~~134 Volt)and I fixed that also.. Thanks again!
that was so funny when you grabbed the guy off the fence and swung him around and threw him on the ground,,,,,,,,,,that was great editing......thanks,,,,,,really made me laugh...............you're a GEM taryl,,,,,,,,,,thanks for all you do............
Excellent Boss Man! I watch this every Christmas morning, so I don't eat too much Turkey. Neighbor gave me his 10HP generator (2006) because rats, chickens and squirrels chewed up wiring and plastic. Your video was the only one on the whole Internet that took the time to remove a part of the engine to show the governor itself and how it operates. That's so awesome you did that. Thanks, buckwheat! :)
Once again Taryl bails my fat out of the fire. Had an old 7 hp Briggs that needed the governor adjusted. Bought an old brush cutter at a sale that didn't run. Taryl has helped me rebuild the carb, put a magneto ignition system on it and set the governor. The old girl was built in 1970 and hadn't been running for 15 years. Now it runs great!! I can't imagine what a shop would have charged for all this. I would love to spend time with him just to observe his work. I enjoy this stuff so much that I find myself buying old engine driven equipment just so I can fix it. I hope you win the lottery or something, you have saved plenty of people a ton of money.
Wow,I've watched a billion videos on the governor and how and what it does and none of them were able to explain it to me better than this one! Thanks a million man
I had an old mower as a spare engine and my riding mower just started smoking and swapped the engines. Didn't know about the setting of the governor but was lucky it didnt run away. Thanks to your video, I got it set correctly and its running. Now i just need to adjust the throttle spring. Thanks for posting such a detailed video on this. The beginning part of showing what its actually doing in the engine was very helpful.
Man Taryl...you make things understandable. It's obvious you have a great deal of knowledge. Thanks for sharing it! I just adjusted the "government" on a Briggs that was running WIDE OPEN! Worked like a charm. Thanks for the Dinner!

You can't adjust the governors or the mayors. They don't see anything wrong with riots killing breaking and stealing. excellent vid & info! My pressure washer had been stored a few years & wouldn't start so after cleaning the carb, adding new gas like you said I started it & wide open full throttle. I've watch a few of these vids realizing I took the governor bolt loose. your vid is the best info & easy/clear to understand on how I need to reset it. thx & thumbs up.
My only problem with these videos: I've been watching so many of them, I'm starting to hear the twangy theme music in my head while I'm trying to sleep. :)
I had to come back and watch this again. I have a 4 horse on a Snapper that the governor is sluggish on and I'm getting a refresher course on how to fine tune it. Nothing is binding but it's had some hard living going on so I'm going to start checking from the governor shaft on out. Thanks, Guys! Yall are the go-to for finding and checking!
I actually understood your video better than the "pro" or "repair shop" type videos. And the comic relief helped as well because I was about to turn my pressure washer into a small boat anchor after I smashed the hell out of it with a sledge hammer. Thanks for the tip
This How-to really helped me out. Rebuilt my first B&S engine today and had to adjust the 'gov't' to get it to idle. Thanks for all your video's and for dumbing it down for me so I can understand it.
I couldn't find anything on the web that could help me with my problem and then I found this video. After changing out my head gasket my B&S went crazy when I cranked it up. Taryl did an excellent job of explaining this issue. Went back to the garage and did exactly what he said and It WORKED!
I really enjoy watching Taryl Fixes All. The fact that he shows the right way and the wrong way, he's helped me immensely and my girlfriend enjoys watching the videos with me. His playing around in the videos makes me want to watch more just wondering what him and his crew are going to do next.

I want to thank you for this video. I had to take my governement off to replace the shaft seal and the engine was running full throttle. I was ready to take my mower the the shop! Your video saved me $! I was able to fix it myself and adjust the rpm thanks to you!!!!
I had to listen about governors but ole tayrel had me laughing and rolling my eyes too and I still not found the answer I want but have an idea to play with now FH500V wish the shaft had the slot, but easy enough.
Thanks Taryl, this video was a huge help. I tore down my Kroler and when I went to put it back together, I was lost. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Hats off to your excellent videos Taryl. Adjusting the government looks like fun. Last year my John Deere blower seized up from a $.05 oil filler plug that came off while round that corner. Busy busy to fix so this season just looking for something to get me through the winter. Picked up a Ford ST 826 (yes Ford made by Gilson I guess) snowblower with 8 hp Briggs 190402 Snow Gard engine. Pretty good shape for age but no spark and china carb replacement is touchy. Put in solid state coil and fired up but ran erratic and such. Took head off and head gasket was blown a bit between exhaust and intake port. Ordered new gasket and replaced. Cylinder looked not too bad and valves seemed to be OK in operation for now. Fired up and now had sparks from recoil area. Screen was rubbing a bit and chewed some edges up. Snipped those rough edges off and replaced. Fired up and starter clutch acting up. Put new one on and OK now. Started up and full throttle seems RPM bit high or bit lean and muffler starting to glow red with some sparks and blue flame. Noticed that when slowing down throttle the motor actually sped up (yes). Something fishy in linkage so figured out that last guy that replaced carb had put the second thinner rod going back up to the butterfly on the wrong bottom hole. Put it on the empty hole on the governor/governor spring bracket. Changed that and took head off to check piston and valves again. Seemed OK. Checked and set governor. Put back together and fired up. Running pretty good with throttle rod slowing down engine now and muffler only getting a bit red inside in the dark (maybe a bit lean still). Took for a test run in the dark in fresh Canuk snow storm tonight with head lamp. The beast throws that snow ! OK here is the latest glitch . While running in the dark I noticed that when releasing the drive lever I noticed a it was throwing a yellowish spark as the drive rod rubbed up against the handle bar frame (engine run doesn't seem to hiccup though ). Whats a happening here ha ha ? So that Ford has a kill switch going up to the drive lever area and you have to depress the lower lever before you release the top lever to go ( works in reverse of most blowers as usually you depress single lever to go but guess Ford had extra safety in mind so operator does run in front of blower on a bad day or eat up the neighborhood. Awkward at best.) Anyway just trying to figure out where this spark is coming from. Obviously some coil source going astray and there is a kill on the lever and a momentary kill switch on the neutral position and a key to boot. With all that it still tries to drive away on its own sometimes ha ha . Think I will remove all the kill switches except the key. Hoping to resolve where the short is originating from and whether slight glow inside muffler is normal for the fire breathing beast. Will put tach on tomorrow. Finding a video showing the linkage setup on that engine is hard to find as different from the two rod setup and the newer setup. Cheers
Taryl Fixes All can you do a video on fixing a broken connecting rod on one of them Briggs and Scratton I/C V-Twins? By the way I subscribed. Your channel is amazing.
I don't if you'll get this or not but I have a bolens g14xl garden tractor with a Tecumseh hh140 engine and I don't know what someone has did but I can only move the throttle about an inch in either direction between full throttle and idle. Can you help me? I've read every book I can find on that tractor and there is no diagram on how the carburetor linkage is supposed to be hooked up.
@@Clare.1985 have you adjusted the throttle cable properly at the clamp on the side of the throttle plate bracket? Make sure there are no kinks in the cable and that none of the levers and springs are bent or installed incorrectly

Thanks Taryl. I replaced the governor shaft seal on my JD GT275 and the engine was surging after I put it back together. I didn’t know what was wrong with it. This video fixed it perfectly.
Oh my god I have the same shirt Taryl lol, I found your channel a few days ago while at my parents house for my grandfathers funeral. My dad was having problems with his Craftsman and I googled valve adjustment and found you. I love it I've watched everyone of your videos and told all my friends. I have a lot after 22 years in the Army. So I hope to raise those viewed numbers. PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING. I need help with my scrub cadet.
Your videos are new to me and I have learned more in one of yours than countless of others in small engine repairs. After watching this particular video I have fixed my governor linkage but still have an unsolvable one that got my patience’s limit. The only way to have my lawnmower engine run smooth is by removing the air filter (is brand new original). With the air filter on, the engine goes high low high low constantly, (there is a name for it but not in my vocabulary yet). By the way, the engine is a Tecumseh 3.8 hp. Would appreciate your help and regardless of the outcome, I am still joining your channel because you really know your stuff and you cover all the little but important details. Thank you my friend!
Taryl, Thanks for your time making these videos they have really cleared up lots of questions that I had about my used Yard Machine. Keep um coming brother!
Just what I needed. I'm rebuilding a 12.5 Briggs and took everything apart to clean it and, off course, screwed with the governor. This brings peace of mind. Thanks Taryl.
Even though this video is several years old, you are the only one to explain how to adjust the governor spring on my Briggs. Thank you very much! If I could like this video more than once I would.
Good one. i may have to make that 90 degree B & S tool, from a piece of 3/8 rod.....grind slots in both ends, opposite each other by 180 degrees. Thanks, for EDUCATION !! SIR. ! WHAT DOES YOUR BEARDED helpers' cap state ? from Alberta Canada
I've never seen anything like it. Most informative, yet hilarious. I subscribed immediately. I do hope you can make a video about fixing the government.
Mr. Tary, I don't speak English, I use the translator, to ask you for help. A great friend recommended it to you. I have an INTEK V Twin, 22 HP, it gives me a defect when starting, just like the Selenoids or low battery, I already changed the two new ones and the straight d continues, it starts once and 3 no, it seems that it cannot break the inersia. Can you or a subscriber help me, there are those who tell me about the Governor, I will review on Saturday. Thank you and I congratulate you for your charisma and good faith. Rafael.
taryl is the best explains everything so the most unknowlegdeable person could understand. that being reneck explainations. awsome and easy to understand. THANK YOU TARYL
How about a DIY Briggs spring tang adjustment tool vid? - I think it’s a 6” or 8” x ¼” round stock (bent into an L shape) with a slot cut in each end, right?
Isn't it called a pair of Pillars? Needle Nose flavor? But ya, Can't easily see the bar to move it on ours, even with the aircover off. and all the plastic bits vanished.
Excellent! You go further than to just show how to do it - Your video shows in a clear way why it may be necessary and how the adjustment affects the related mechanisms. You provide an understanding that makes the knowledge more valuable and easier to apply. It is also cool to watch your skit that shows humility about yourself in spite of your great expertise.
Two things at once.... o’boy. I’m going to have problems now. I have my wife put her tongue on the spark plug wire then count how many times her eyes blink
Just joined you from the UK a few days ago, Faaantastic, you fixed my surging trouble. (which makes the wife very happy ) You remind me of Foghorn Leghorn (my hero) Ive got no more mower trouble, for the moment anyway, but i'll be watching just for the entertainment value. Thank you.
Wow! Searching for a vid on governor adjustment and how to fix my erratic surge/lag when accelerating (v-twin 16hp B&S Vanguard on an '03 Toro Twister) and came across you Taryl. Cheers
You have great acting talent and are an awesome mechanic. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great video! Thanks for the clear explanation.
Thanks to yer vid I fixed my government problem!!!! yeehaw!!!!!!!!
You're welcome! Please subscribe and share. Thanks
I've been telling people to watch your crazy videos...funny as hell and you're one great teacher my friend! Keep it up...
Great step on setting properly the governor
It'' s diificult to tell if you re a better comedian or an expert mechanic, but what you and your crew do it's more than just funny, It makes entretaining and easy to understand what could be a nightmare to understand for people like me ,not very good at mechanics. That's not an easy task to achieve.Keep It up Bro!
Thanks Taryl. I replaced the governor shaft seal on my JD GT275 and the engine was surging after I put it back together. I didn’t know what was wrong with it. This video fixed it perfectly.
"Drehzahlmesser" stands for "revolution counter" just so you know :-)
Oh my god I have the same shirt Taryl lol, I found your channel a few days ago while at my parents house for my grandfathers funeral.
I want to see those tools in action, if that's possible.
That could be the carburetor needing cleaning. Air flow may not be entering correctly.
This beats anything on TV!
I sure wish the internet was this useful about 10 years ago. This would have saved me 2 broken rods. Thank you.
Taryl,
Thanks for your time making these videos they have really cleared up lots of questions that I had about my used Yard Machine.
Rafael.
The opening is great. Perfect and funny as hell!! Love the humor. A lot!!
That was sure good information and appreciate it. Thanks Taryl.

Haha! Me too. Where I came from.
taryl is the best explains everything so the most unknowlegdeable person could understand. that being reneck explainations. awsome and easy to understand.
Best explanation of the governor I have seen. Very helpful to me. Seems a shame nobody can explain the US constitution with the same clarity.
Man that was the best Dam dinner i had for a while, My toro is surging ,but not anymore , thanks to Taradactal.

Excellent tutorial Tayrl. Cheers and Yeeeeeeee Haaaaawwwwwwww :-)
You're welcome! Thanks and be sure to share and subscribe! (If you haven't already)
+Jim Miller Thanks Jim, That's a really nice comment.
Two things at once.... o’boy. I’m going to have problems now. I have my wife put her tongue on the spark plug wire then count how many times her eyes blink

You guys are great! Making work fun. You have the best job in the world! Thanks for the lesson...and the fun.
Wow! Searching for a vid on governor adjustment and how to fix my erratic surge/lag when accelerating (v-twin 16hp B&S Vanguard on an '03 Toro Twister) and came across you Taryl. Not only was I laughing in the beginning, you explained well AND touched on my governor issue at the end. Now I just gotta get on it and see how I do! Not home now, but will check that out tomorrow! Thanks. Appreciate the info and laugh.
