For $25 I bought a 1995 model of a very similar MTD snow blower with an 8 HP Tecumseh. I'm having to fix a few things on it, including the carb, and I made the mistake of removing the governor arm. But here is Taryl serving me exactly the dinner I need. I followed the instructions here, and now it is running pretty good. I wish I could leave a hundred likes for this.

My Lord! I have looked ALL OVER Google-land to find this exact and precise information. Taryl - I salute you for a precise, detailed, simple explanation of the proper linkage and governor settings for my Tecumseh 11-hp snowblower engine. I NEEDED THIS!
I put on a new carburetor, and I could not get the thing to run right! It would always run at the high-throttle setting, (not over-revving), and I could not get any intermediate speed settings. When I replaced the carb, I did indeed tweak that little governor arm-pivot-screw, but I thought I put it back in the same place. Since the carb was new (an expensive Tecumseh factory carb) I had to presume everything was good with the carb (non-adjustable job) - I did, however, verify the float bowl setting. It was right on the money. I use ethanol-free gas and everything. I spent an hour tweaking the idle and high-speed screws, but I could not get the beast to decrease its speed to idle.
After sleeping on it and giving it much thought, I figured it MUST be the governor... but after hours of searching, I could find nothing but hit-or-miss adjustments. Then I found your channel! This is THE ONLY video I have found that shows EXACTLY what to do and how to do it. In fact, you have another video (May 2015) that shows a slightly different way to set the governor, but this one is, by far, the best. It is simple, concise, and it worked for me immediately! The machine is now just like the day I bought it. Thank you sir!

Thank you! I tinkered around the whole day last week. It would not start at all. So I cleaned the carb. It started on second pull but it would rev extremely high. I couldn't get it run normal. I almost gave up and was going to buy a new snowblower (bought mine used 13 years ago. Its got to be at least 20 years old). I spend some time searching for a repair video and this is the only one I found that explained how to adjust the governor. I must have installed the governor linkage arm improperly. Its running well now. Thanks again.

Answered any questions I had except 1, is there any difference between the engine in the video and a pre 77' Tecomseh H35 3.5hp with the govenor linkage that is connected to a series 1 carburetor. Connected the linkage and the spring is still sprung without much tension.

Hi i have a 11hp generator with a Honda GX340 engine, with the idle controle ON, the governor keeps reving the engine up and down with the controle off the engine runs fine at full speed. I took the carb off and cleaned it all up including the idle jet, it made no difference. Does it sound like there's a problem with the low idle system or does the governor need adjusting?

Hi Taryl, first time i used my snowblower this year, 8.5hp Tecumseh, i couldnt run it off choke. Had to keep it t half choke. Remove carb, cleaned everything real well, replaced a bad o-ring on the emulsion tube, reinstalled everything, now it runs off choke, but only runs well at full throttle. When you put the throttle down to low speed idle, it runs really low almost stalling and really high. It keeps cycling back and forth slowly. Any idea what is wrong?
    Its the non adjustable carb.

It's so amazing how you can come up with fresh original ideas for skits every week, kudos to you, taryl. I have a good idea for a repair segment, show how to properly replace the spring in a older Briggs recoil starter. I have lots brought to me after the owner gave up, trying to coil the spring inside the housing then hook it on the pulley then try to quickly get the fully seated before the whole thing shoots out like a snake. I stick the spring in the slot in the blower housing, hook it on the pulley, install the pulley and bend the tabs over. Then just turn the pulley and wind the spring in, then taking a pair of needle nose pliers and hooking the end of the spring into the blower housing slot. Then just wind the spring until tight, back off until the hole in the pulley lines up with the rope opening in the housing. I take a tool I made from a broom handle and a piece of throttle cable inner wire that's been flattened on the end and ground into a hook like on a sewing seam ripper and hook it into the end of the rope and fish it thru the rope opening in the housing and into the hole in the pulley and tie a double s knot and then there's your dinner!

My tecumseh doesn't have an arm or spring!!! I 'mgoing insane trying to figure out how to adjust it. From what i can gather, the linkage for the governor is actually through the pivot for the throttle arm. In other words, i have my throttle cable going from the accelerator pedal to a small arm on a heavy spring with a wire linkage to a second arm with a smaller spring and a second wire linkage to the fly valve on the carb. Thats it. Its directly connected from the pedal to the fly valve with no other linkage. I know there is a governor though, because the second arm will back off when the engine is under load, and fight against the second weaker spring. I can only guess that the governor gear inside the block is connected to that second arm through its actual pivot point (which just looks like a domed rivet). Do i have to remove the head entirely to adjust the governor gear directly???
I've done so much research on governors, and i can't find a single other governor that works even remotely like this 2.5 hp tecumseh does.

I’ve tried everything in this video after replacing the carburetor. Set the governor, messed with all the set screws and no matter what I try it still revs too high. It usually starts off at a regular RPM then goes to the moon. The video was great and I thought it was the torx screw on the linkage arm that was the problem. Not the case. The spring has tension and everything is set properly. I’ve got the throttle screw backed almost all the way out and it just takes off. Any ideas?

Would be nice to see a video explaining how to figure out what does what. Like if someone brings you a blower to fix after they had their fingers on it. Different spring, linkage bent, a fresh start, a benchmark type video.
I have a blower I'm working on, figured everything out but I need the govener to give more power when it gets working hard. So more spring? Move spring to higher hole?
