One suggestion for amateurs: before backing out idle adjustment screw. Turn that idle screw in and count the turns; this way you know where to set it after reinstalling!

    • @drewthompson7457
      @drewthompson7457 3 года назад +13

I count half turns, I find it easier. Also, I have had 3 carbs where the owner, or somebody, has turned the idle screw so hard so that the needle was broken off and jammed into the seat.
Have you found any way to get the needle out? I haven't.

Okay I’m an idiot so please don’t take me for one. Wouldn’t you have to count the turns when your removing the idle adjustment screw from where it’s currently at so that when you screw it back in you put it in the exact spot?? Or am I way off??

    • @danoakley6538
      @danoakley6538 3 года назад +24

That will work. Doing it the other means when you screw it back in, screw all the way until it stops then back it out however many times it takes to equal your first count before removing it completely.

    Bingo!!! no more surging.

A few months ago I replaced the engine in my case 444 with a 13 hp predator engine. From the day I put this in the engine would surge, I figured it was in the carburetor and just purchased a new carb from amazon. Same thing, engine was surging. I watched this video and I thought that this couldnt be it because it surged with both carburetors. This surging was so frustrating that when I went out to plow snow the other day I figured what the hell I may as well check that jet in your video. Sure enough it was never opened from the factory. I have a small set of drills we use in the heating business to drill pilot orifices, so I found the proper size and opened the port which was never opened after being made. The engine runs beautiful now. Actually a pleasure to start and run. Thank you for the video.

I finally fixed my toro snow blower yesterday which has done this surging / searching thing for three years (getting ready for the season). Took out the carb, ran wire drills through the jet (just like you said 99 % of the time will fix it), and put back together. Started it up, NO MORE surging. Also adjusted the low idle and high throttle settings. it's running great and better than ever before since I owned it. Very thankful for your help on this, at the time, a 6 year old video gave me a victory over my Tecumseh engine. TecumSEE you say. TecumSUH I say. Maybe it's a regional thing.

Tip for those who don't have a drill and want a quick fix for cleaning out that little jet hole: Find a piece of steel cable and break one individual wire off of the frayed end with a needle nose pliers, then use the needle nose pliers to grip the wire and push through the jet hole while twisting.

After watching your video last week, I bought your mini drill bit set and poked through the clog in that extra jet. It runs better now than it has in ten years! Still can't believe how tiny that little drill bit is. Cool.

OMG, I stumbled onto this video in the hopes of finding out how to clean a carburetor. My Kohler 7.3E marine generator has surged for years and after trying clean and even rebuild the carb to stop the surging, the only answer was to buy a new one. I've been through a few in the 900 hours I have on the generator. Well not any more. You're video helped me find that pilot jet and I never took that off because it had a screwed down clamp over the jet, which I took as a "do not touch". I did as you instructed and then fired up the generator and wow, no more surging, just purring like a kitten. I wish I could post my short video of her running, but I don't see that it's allowed. Many thanks Steve!!!!!

An older gentleman who has been repairing lawn mowers locally for over 45 years, recently shared a repair secret with me regarding how to correct issue with a reported surging engine. He said that you should seldom be required to remove a carbureator in order to correct a surging engine complaint. He told me to purchase a bottle of 100% Acetone from a retail outlet or Nail Salon. He said to use 1/4 a cup of Acetone and pour it directly into the equipment's Gas Tank, and then fill it up with gasoline to allow it to become mixed with the gasoline. The equipment should then be started, and allowed to run for atleast 15 minutes. He said you can also place the equipment in use to allow it to clean itself whole working. The Acetone not only cleans the internal varnish deposits within the Carbuerator, but also removes some of the internal engine's carbon deposits. He suggested doing this once or twice a season. I did so this week on my Toro Recycler, and wow, what a difference it made in eliminating the surging issue, as well as allowing a notable improved performance of the engine. He also said this solution when diluted with the gasoline, does not harm any of the internal seals and/or gaskets. All that I can tell you is, it worked in solving my Toro Recycler Self Propelled Mower.

Steve - Great video, thank you. One thing to consider for newer mechanics. Before removing the idle screw, screw it in all the way counting turns to seat it. When you reinstall idle screw after clearing the pilot jet, reseat it and back out the # of turns from where you started. Easy and eliminates a variable for testing.

Another true nugget from Steve’s SE Saloon!
Story: Recently I executed a total cleaning of every nook, crevice and port (purchased and used the mini drill set) I could see along with new OM parts on my 1995 Walbro-LMT # 5-4993 Carburetor, my 15 hp Briggs developed the “death” surge😢. Back to Steve’s videos and I found the nugget solution🎉. Only had to remove the breather housing to get to the carb. There it was…The flat-headed Brass Pilot Screw. After removing and inspection, the “jet” port as well as the Pilot Screw end port was blocked. The correct size mini drill bit was the ticket to success.
Put it all back together and Wow!!! It ran smooth as silk 😊 Thank You, Steve for always sharing your small engine “golden nuggets” which have been my inspiration in restoring my Dad’s 1995 JD Sabre 1546G!!! God Bless you and your family🙌🙏🏻👍

After watching your video, I pulled the pilot jet but didn’t have the wire bit to clean it. Thanks a lot Steve, My Iseki lawnmower has a GVX160 engine. The engine was not running smoothly (was hunting), also black smoke came out of the exhaust and when hot there was sometimes a big plunk and fire coming out of the muffler.
The first thing I checked was the air filter.
The air filter was very dirty and clogged.
I installed a new air filter, the big plunks and the fire were gone but the engine was still hunting.
I followed your instructions and removed the jet valve. The small hole was plugged, I took a wire from a wire brush and cleaned the hole.
After that I cleaned with compressed air.
I've put it back together and started the engine.
The problem was solved, the engine was running smoothly.

Hi Steve. That was very generous of you to share that fix. I have a Simson powered by Honda Pressure washer (From Costco) It had the surge problem from day one. Being a truck driver I had no time to return it to Costco. It was just a thorn in my eye. I watched your video today and went after it. I found the Philips screw head. Took it out reamed the hole and now she pers like a kitten. Thank you very much.

Hey, great video on this problem. Had a generator that had sat for several years, emptied out the old gas, cleaned the carburetor out, and got it running. The engine had the surging problem. Checked the carb and it had the removable jet. Did not have to remove carb as you mentioned, cleared the jet out and the engine ran fine. Thanks again, great tip.

Steve, Thanks man, you just saved me a fortune in repair bills. My trusty Mountfield ride-on just started surging (I've always called it hunting) and you showed me the problem and how to fix it. I'm now the proud owner of a set of micro drill bits and a can of carb cleaner, plus a mower running as sweet as a nut again. When I got the idle jet out I could actually (with the help of an eye loop and a bright light, age you know...) see the blockage and the drill bit cleared it. Thanks again, your channel is invaluable.

If you buy a wire brush for welding that has long bristles...You can pull an entire section of bristles out with needle nose pliers and you have very stiff tiny wires for cleaning out pilot/idle jets. Keep them in a ziplock sandwich bag so they do not scatter everywhere. I always enjoy your videos. You are keeping the world running at a very low price.

Great video Steve, lots of good info here for those wondering why they are experiencing this issue, probably one of the most common and misunderstood small engine runablity issues.
At the 6:05 mark in the video you mention removing the Phillips screw in order to gain access to the pilot jet. The small dot on the screw signifies that this in fact a JIS ( Japanese Industrial Standard) screw and not a Phillips. This not a criticism only a heads up for those that aren't aware.
The confusion between the two has caused much grief because the geometries of the two cross head drivers and screws appear similar but in fact are totally different. Phillips drivers are designed to cam-out, JIS drivers are not.
Using a Phillips in a tight JIS screw is an exercise doomed to failure. For those regularly working with Japanese JIS screws ( dimple on the screw head) do yourself a favor and purchase a set of JIS screwdrivers.
Lots of good info out there on the subject, below is just a quick grab to get one started:
    www.motorcycle.com/ask-mo-anything/difference-between-japanese-jis-phillips.html
Keep up the great videos Steve!

    We are the shop Steve,
And have to agree with you on the grand majority of engines !
However, we see a number of extremely high hour engines with the surge !
We have found that by very carefully stepping up the wire bit to the next size, due to engine wear, and loss of vacuum, which sad to infor the EPA, requires a bit more fuel !
You MUST be EXTREMELY CAREFUL not to go TOO BIG with the wire bits, only one or two sizes is usually all that is needed Steve !

The wire was too thin so i cut a few pieces idk maybe 6 inches long and then twisted them 3 or 4 times per inch so that it sort of acts like a saw. If 1 is too flimsy and bends it might be too wide amd u gotta find something else to use or try a chemical cleaner to bust through a bit until the narowest thing i have fits through. If 3 is too thick try just 2 strands but twist each around each other not just wrapping 1 around the other. Idk maybe use 4 or 5 until u get the diameter right.

It has been absolutely 100% trouble free for some 23 years (yes, I baby her) but started surging during this spring's tilling but ran okay once it warned. Started tilling for my winter garden (1,200 square feet) yesterday and she died two or three times before it warned up and started running smoothly (at full speed) enough.
