Thanks! I just finished changing the sump gasket and seal on an otherwise perfect Craftsman PYT9000 that I picked up for only $20! Oil was leaking like crazy and the mower smoked after a couple minutes. I watched your video like 20 times while I did the job. Turned out great. No leaks. The old gasket was all crumbled and hard. You're the best!

With your help I recently replaced the sump gasket, governor and oil seal on a V-Twin and it all seems to be working fine now. I wouldn't have attempted this job without a good video to learn from. Thank you so much!

Even though this video is 5 years old as I write this, it was a fantastic help. I noticed a couple of things on my 17-year-old V-Twin. 1. The threads had a slight pull in the block, and adding a chamfer will eliminate this. 2. The castings (both) had sharp internal edges, that could lead to gasket failure. Again, chamfering or softening the internal edges will reduce stress points and possible failure.
    Keep'r between the ditches!

Thanks Taryl and the Grass Rats Crew!! I had the exact same issue with this motor and this was the best video I found to show how to fix the issue. Including the part numbers needed. Love watching Taryl's videos and my wife loves Taryl's 'Service Bulletin Classics'. She's not a beer drinker, but if she was, she would want a Hamm's thanks to Taryl.

Just wanted to say thanks for showing us how to do this Taryl. I have this exact mower and had a serious oil leak and no idea what to do about it. I'm a relatively green mechanic but your 'how to' film spelled it out so clearly even I could do it. Took me 3 days on and off and had to watch your video many times. Only problems I encountered were the 4 engine bolts and clutch spindle were very tight. I fixed this by cutting the end off a metal hoe to extend my socket's leverage. I also needed to lock the engine when removing the clutch spindle by stuffing 3' of clothes line into the spark plug hole. Had a bit of a tussle too refitting the sump cover, couldn't quite get it to fit - had a 1/4" gap. I eventually sussed out the 2 dowels weren't lined up perfectly, then it dropped in. Your explanation of how to set the governor was first class, and she fired up first time. Many thanks Taryl from the UK.

I just completed this operation and this vid helped a lot! My engine had a different oil pump gasket (flat) and an automatic choke. Other than that it was the same inside with the gasket failied along the long edge. The most difficult part was removing the pulley. I had to fabricate a puller from a steel plate and three long bolts to fit the holes in the pulley. I did not replace the crank seal but had to guide it past the crank with an awl. No more leak!

This was an awesome instructional video. Engine was leaking from the gasket right by the oil filter, Followed you video and replace gasket and seal without issue, engine back on mower and running. Gonna use your other video to replace valve cover gasket also. I also love that you give great tips along the way "watch our for...." & "be careful of..." Excellent job guys!!! (by the way, the oil drain valve was loose)

Thanks for the video took my Husqvarna lawn tractor lgt2654 to a local small engine mechanic for this exact problem and he talk all around fixing the crank case seal and sump gasket and said it would be a long term job and claim he would have to pull the deck off lawn mower and to take engine off that was a red flag for me right there when he said that had already watch your video several times so I order the exact parts u showed and even order valve cover gasket pulled engine off today done exact steps u said do put everything back together and no more oil leaks and runs like a charm fired up first turn of key thanks again!

Thank you for your video. I used it last week to replace the oil pan gasket and shaft seal on my mower. It was very helpful (and entertaining). A tip I would add for others using the video for reference would be to consider also changing the governor shaft seal and the oil pump o-ring while you've got the pan off. The parts are cheap enough...

Got er done and no leaks! I did have a problem while it was upside down. Seems the crankshaft will slide down( up when it's upside down) and then the cover won't drop. I had to slide the crank gear up and realign the timing marks. Eventually it went together. Evidently you're not supposed to stand them right on their tops. No harm done, just a little extra work. Thanks again for the video! It was a tremendous help!! Now for some dinner!!

Bless you Taryl !! I took on a 24hp Intek sump gasket for the first time. I was losing a pint an hour and everything was a mess on top of a mess. It took me quite a while but after torqueing the sump down I flipped the motor and heard a distinct Rattle inside. HUH? Oh well, I mounted it back up and it ran great until I noticed the oil pressure light was lit. I had NO idea what to do next until I watched this video. Thank you for including the oil pump shaft explanation. I found mine rolling around next to the crank it had fallen out. And of course my guide pin fell in. Put everything back and everything was great, running, oil pressure, then it caught fire right behind the muffler. I am hoping it was just some of the oily mess I created. I got my Dinner!! I had better luck with the PTO seal by putting it on last after I set the sump, then I tapped it home using the old seal to counter sink it. The first time I installed it on the sump first & my spring came out also.

I watched and rewatched (x5 slow learner )your video on the B&S sump gasket repair, because you detailed the correct way to adjust the governor after the gasket had been installed. The governor gear had failed and I had purchased a new gear and washer for the motor. The new governor gear did not survive the restart of the motor. Upon the disassembled I found the new gear completely destroyed. I thought maybe i hadn't followed your instructions about moving the governor control arm up inside the sump when reassembling the motor. I again reassembled the motor with a new governor gear and washer. This one survived the restart at half throttle, but when advanced to full throttle again ran away and destroyed the gear assembly. I disassembled the motor again and after checking all the dowels that position the gasket on the crankcase, realized that the pin for the governor also was a dowel. (I thought) I grabbed it and it came out of the case. I checked it and it had a few scuff marks on it. I figured that it would just be easier to order a new pin to install. Imagine my surprise when I found that there isn't a replacement pin offered by B&S. After more research on the subject I found out that the pin is actually pressed into the case. If the steel governor gear spinning around the steel pin wears or gets galled by heat or lack of lubrication it will seize onto the pin or destroy itself. If it seizes onto the pin and spins the steel pin in the aluminum casting, then B&S considers the case ruined and a throw away.
After watching several of your detailed videos about b&s and Kohler engines, I figured that this is a subject that you might want to make a video about. I've researched this a bit and it isn't uncommon for this to happen on older B&S -twin engines. It might save someone (like me) a lot of time and money if part of the inspection upon the disassembled included a check of the pin. It would have saved me at least $100 in parts, shipping, fluids and filters had I known to check that one little steel shaft first.
I did see that one other RUclipsr had made a video detailing a fix using JB weld to hold the steel pin for the governor gear. If U have a better solution maybe U should include it in a repair video update about governor gears on B&S v-twin engines.
Love the costumes, the movies , but especially the detail and clearly and slowly defined way of explaining the disassembly and reassembly of what U are working on. Six thumbs up!!! "There's your dinner!"

Taryl thanks for a great video. My mower was leaking oil and I thought it was the sending unit beside the oil filter. When that didn't fix it I came to youtube and found your video. I tore it down today and sure enough about three inches of gasket was gone right beside the filter. My mower ( 52" bobcat) is 14 years old now. I will make it through this season and I may upgrade to a new engine before next year. The bobcat has a little over 900 hrs but everything else is still solid. It has an 18 hp on it now. I may go to a 24hp. Thanks for a great video. Nice teeth!!!! lmao

this video was very helpful, especially the part about setting the governor. One thing that could be added to this (and other videos) is how to take the drive/mower pulley off the crankshaft. I had to do a search to find a trick where you stuff a few inches of cotton rope in the cylinder, through the spark plug hole, to stop the crank from spinning while you remove the bolt holding the pulley. Other than that, awesome video. Thanks so much.

Hey Taryl, thanks for the vids. I'm hoping you can help me out here. I have a Craftsman lawn tractor with a 24hp Briggs intek v-twin engine, exactly like the one you're working on. Lately while i'm mowing, it wants to cut out for a split second then just keeps going. I changed the plugs, air filter and oil. I did notice though, the way the fuel filter sits is on an angle which creates an air pocket on the top side, which is the fuel pump side. Could it be that while i'm riding, the air pocket moves and the pump actually sucks a little air and that crates the hesitation?

Was disassembly of the oil pump necessary to replace sump gasket?
I'm getting ready to remove the sump pan to retrieve the aluminum rod that fell down into the engine. I want to get in an out as quickly as possible.
    Great video!

Taryl, can I use that Valco Cincinnatti Gel Lube on the gears inside my transaxle along with the grease in there to help lubricate it? Another great video. You guys are the best. Keep em coming.

I have a mid 90’s Craftsman with a Briggs 19.5 Turbo cool Opposed twin. It seems to have deleloped a bad oil leak on the left side sort of on the bottom by the sump. Seems to leak more when I turn the engine off. Is this normal and have you seen this on the 19.5 opposed twins also?

Hey Taryl. Need your help. I replaced my sump gasket on a commercial turf 26hp Briggs Stratton and after getting it back together. I tried to start it and it doesn't want to run. It floods really bad. Gas ran out the muffler. I thought that maybe after having the engine in awkward position maybe the floats for some trash on them. So I took the Nikki carb off and apart and cleaned it very good. It was very clean. Installed back in and still same issue. Changed the plugs and still same issue. I can only get it to run by unplugging the fuel cut off solenoid on and off. Sonit don't flood. Any ideas? Thanks

Teryl question: K301 engine. Fuel pump works manually, but will not send fuel to carburetor. Is that due to wear on crankshaft?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds every single one of those drain valves loose like that.

Only thing that's loose on mine is the rockers... last owner overheated it.

Can I replace the sump gasket with the engine still in the mower? I have a Scag zero turn and can remove enough frame to access the engine.
