  • Honestly, we tend to shy away from movies with aliens because they can be scary. In all fairness, I wasn't even born yet and this was one movie that slipped through the cracks. Watch as we scream, laugh and look on with confusion to our first time watching CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (1977)
This movie was produced by Julia Phillips and Michael Phillips Productions and distributed by Columbia Pictures.

The pilots did not want to report the UFO cause of all the personal and professional ramifications that go along with reporting a UFO. Back then, it could cost a pilot his job and ability to get another job as a pilot, and the whole domino effect that has on a persons life.

Towards the end of the movie, there's a grey haired gentleman with a beard, wearing eyeglasses and smoking a pipe who is briefly shown walking towards the craft with others. This was a cameo by renowned professor and astronomer, Dr. J. Allen Hynek who was the person who originated the 'close encounter' classification system that the movie's title is based on. Actually, when you read how they directed him, he was never actually *acting* at all. For him, it was all a game. But that's how good filmmakers get those 'performances' out of young children, most of the time. Like when they had him smile at the Aliens, he was actually smiling at something goofy they were doing.

Miss there was nothing. I mean nothing creepy about Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
I found it a fascinating and incredible cinematic experience. I was 12 yrs old, 1977.
Yes the first alien that came out of the ship, did scare me. I was a kid.
Steven Spielberg told such an awe inspiring story about alien encounters and UFO’s without making the movie too frightening.

There was a deleted scene at the end that shows what he sees inside the mother ship. He enters a round chamber with lights all around it illuminating the chamber. They all turn upwards, then the ceiling of the chamber starts rising and reveals the enormity of the inside of the ship. He sees so many windows all full of beings looking down upon him, which overwhelms him with joy. Then he sees in the center of this enormous ship is a docking system for the smaller ships with four massive arms that connect to the disc that was the ceiling of the chamber that rose up. All the small ships dock inside the structure, then activate their engines giving off a shower of light that lights up the whole inside of the ship. Then the last being outside returns the hand gestures and smile to Lacombe, and they close up and leave.
The expression “every Christian soul” was used to mean that he wanted something so scary that anyone in their right mind, sensible people, would be scared away. If they’re not in their right mind, and don’t get scared away, chances are nobody would believe what they say anyway.
    Great reaction!

The little boy wasn't actually acting. All his reactions are real. When he is looking excitedly at the sky and says "toys!" Spielberg was standing on a ladder with what he told the boy was a surprise. Then he pulled out some toys and the boy reacted earnestly. The scene where he encounters the aliens in the kitchen and does the fascinated stare, Spielberg had two of the crew dress up in monkey suits which first made the boy a little scared and then one of the men took off his mask and the boy recognized the man and smiled. That's how Spielberg got his reputation as being great with child actors. There's a documentary about the making of Close Encounters where they go into all this.

Great reaction again. The WW2-type planes in the film were based on Flight 19, the designation for a group of five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers that disappeared over the Bermuda Triangle on December 5, 1945 after losing contact during a US Navy overwater navigation training flight. All 14 Navy pilots on the flight disappeared without conclusive evidence as to what had happened to them. Over the decades, there have been all kinds of rumors about UFOs, etc. being to blame. The war was already over and it's hard for people to accept that all the planes just disappeared at the same time. - By the way, the French guy was played by the world famous film director François Truffaut.

    That was great! Thank you!
To make an idea about how and what I felt when I first saw the movie, I’ll say only this - I was 13 and I saw it on the big screen in the theatre. It was a path opener, as it was a foundation for all the great movies that followed … a little later in the same year, the first Star Wars movie (ep.4) came out and it was obvious to everybody that a new trend was launched. Before that, there was nothing getting even close to it. So, I can safely say that I witnessed the beginning of a new cinematic era at first hand.
As always, you guys charged me with a great mood for at least one more week … anyway, please keep your fingers crossed for me, as the next week is of crucial importance for me, defining for many important things in my life.
Million thanks again. Looking forward to your next reaction.

Fun Fact the star, Richard Dryfus is the grandson of the French officer Theodore Dryfus that was wrongly sent to Jail and though movies have been made he never played his grandfather despite the fact he looks like him. Another Actor that I think should have played a relative when he was younger is Tom Hanks, who like myself is a generational cousin of Abe Lincoln. Lincoln's mom was a Hanks and hers a Mooney. Do to its popularity they kept releasing different versions of the film on video. Another good one guys. The beginning scene with the planes is also pointing to the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. The pilots didn’t want to report a U F O because they would have been ridiculed and maybe lose their jobs like Roy did. It’s kind of hard to understand how you have never seen this before since it’s such a classic and you both are involved with the making of movies. I like how Mike watches movies. Little trivia: at 7:26 you see the kid first expressing fright and the all if a sudden relief with a smile. The actor Cary Guffey told much later how Spielberg achieved all these wanted reactions mostly in the first take. In this case there was one of the stuntmen dressed up as a gorilla and then he removed his head mask and the kid recognized his friend he was familiar with on the set.
Toby Neary (Roy Neary‘s son) was actually played by Justin Dreyfuss, Richard‘s nephew.
When the kid called „toys“ at 20:10, he reacted to Spielberg standing on a ladder, grabbing a box and unwrapping a toy…🤭👍. Genius conductor! He made it easy for kids to simply react instead of acting…
At 22:14 when the boy crawled through the cat door he was pulled by his own real mother from the other side. On the DVD version you could see her forearm for the fraction of a second…. 🫢
44:20 When the kid started to cry and say „good bye“ he was told by Steven that he won‘t see his friends from the film crew anymore, because they were done…

The "close encounter" scale was invented by astronomer and UFO researcher J. Allen Hynek. The classes range from CE1-CE5, with 4 and 5 being added after Hynek's death. CE1 is when one sees a defined, detailed object at an estimated distance of less than 500 feet. CE2 is when the object has interacted in some way with the physical environment around it. CE3 is when the observer sees one or more animate occupant in or from the object. This could also be interaction between the observer and the occupant. In CE4, the occupant or occupants abduct the observer, such as, for example, in the Barney and Betty Hill incident in the 1960s or the case of Whitley Strieber in the 1980s. And CE5 represents human attempts to initiate interaction with UFO/UAP occupants. Seeing lights in the sky or even indistinct objects doesn't even make the CE scale, though it is still of interest.
