If you're unaware, the quote "The universe is a pretty big place, if it's just us it seems like an awful waste of space". This is a quote by Carl Sagan, the astrophysicist who wrote the book this movie is derived from.

Great reaction you two I was pleased to see Hubby get choked up in some of the same scenes that I do, & not be afraid to let it show, when the 'emotional thru line' of the story is in parts so wonderfully captured.
@@Laurie473 Aw, thank you for your kind words, Laurie473, we really appreciate it. Yes, why not show our true human emotions, right? Thanks for watching! (:
@@anorthosite Yeah, maybe they took some liberties. I just love the point that one can believe in something even though one can't necessarily prove it, and it doesn't have to be about God either... Great movie! (:
I am so proud of you guys for seeing one of the neatest shots ever made in a movie when no other reactors notice it. The mirror shot while there where 90 degree turns were made. It is a brilliant shot!!!!
YEEES, maybe it's because we're filmmakers ourselves!! My mind was blown and I had to Google it and find out more about it! Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching! (:
That mirror shot is wonderful. Another favorite moment of mine is the long tracking shot when she jumps out of the car and runs down the hall and up the stairs into the room with the rest of the guys and it's all a single shot
That moment when, on the alien beach, the alien/"Dad" compassionately says: "We thought this would make things easier for you...". [Pleasant Chills] Also: "WE didn't build it; we don't know who Did. No: They were gone long before we arrived..." pushes forth the Time Scale.
I have one question about that ending. He says "you have your mother's hands".... If he's not really her dad, how could he know? Or is that just another thing to make her feel better? If they just extract from Ellie's memories (which I actually just generally liked to accept. It makes more sense scientifically), well then the line makes no sense, because Ellie doesn't have any memories of her mom. That's the thing. It's only something, her REAL dad would know... So.... IS it perhaps her ACTUAL dad? 🤔 Maybe there IS an afterlife? And he just claims something different. Because we have to find out ourselves? Idk, beautiful things to theorize about. Even more so since my mother died in 2019, but I've lovef this movie ever since it came out. It was my #1 all time favorite movie for a while. It dethroned Back To The Future...
Also (albeit early 1990s effects): Before the alien form "morphed" into her dad, it looked kinda like a cross between a Tumbleweed....and brown Kelp. A brief moment of creepy - maybe not enough ;)
@@chanceneck8072 Great question, I'd say it IS the spirit of her REAL father... I wouldn't see why not and I would say there IS an afterlife and dad's spirit is part of it. No? However, it is one of the best movies I've ever seen! (:
Zemeckis is an absolute MASTERCLASS of the "character journey". Contact, Castaway, Back to the Future, Forest Gump, list goes on. He sets up and pays off character journeys like nobody else!
'look at me and my math....or science...whatever it is' after correctly solving the Primer puzzler hahaha. I dunno why i loved that so much . Contact is one of my favorite movies from growing up! Glad to see people reacting to it!
The idea of the opening shots where the camera panned out of the solar system with the music and audio track playing in the background was to show how far signals from Earth would travel through space. As a matter of fact, NASA had placed a Golden Record on one of the Voyager spacecrafts launched in 1977 that's now billions of miles going into interstellar space.
Yes, that was sooo smartly done. And I've read about the Golden Record a long time ago. Fascinating stuff! Thanks for sharing this info and thanks for watching! (:
It was great going on the journey with you both! It made this movie seem like I was watching it for the first time again. I hope to see you both on RUclips for many more movies and shows. 🙂
We sent out Voyage 1 satellite when I was in high school. It had important recordings etched on gold plates, archival newscasts, radio transmissions. It's still out there!!! Sent images & sounds throughout my life. I'm 69 now. First Star Trek movie was all about "Voyager1"👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤❤❤❤❤👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Carl Sagan did a segment on the gold record sent with Voyager on his Cosmos show, and in his book Cosmos, which I have read numerous times. I highly recommend it.
I saw this movie when it came out when I was a kid. The ending sequence was unexpected, and unlike anything I had ever seen at the time. I was already a budding astronomy nerd, but this movie sealed my fascination with sci-fi.
Yeah, I can see why! I was completely taken by the beginning sequence AND ending sequence. And then, of course, the entire story! What a fantastic movie! Thanks for watching! (:
Subscribed because I enjoyed your thoughtful reaction. Contact is one of my favorite films as well as one of my favorite novels. It's Carl Sagan's only work of fiction and certainly a compelling read. Great job!
Thank you Joel, we appreciate your kind words. Yes, Contact has definitely become one of our favorite movies as well. Many people mentioned Carl Saga's work. Thanks for watching! (:
Yes, I've heard that comment before. It's true, it beeps all the time, I don't even notice it anymore. I took the batteries out of my two smoke alarms and both of them STILL kept beeping! So strange. I have to investigate further. Thanks for letting me know! (:
Glad you two noticed the medicine cabinet "mirror shot". I was a lowly production assistant on this film, and I regretted not asking how it was done. Cheers 🍸
This movie, while the book was written from an atheists point of view, was written not make either the religious or the non believer out to be like anyway. They showed crazy people, which there are, showed reasonable atheist's and reasonable religious people and also the reverse. It was written as a handshake for both to share, they didn't paint "christians" any certain way as she put it. Most people stick to their own agendas, which make them blind, what you seen was a lot of blind people, being christian or religious was just a section of the same road for them to take and they can't see the exits even if there were religious exits as well. Ellie didn't see an off ramp till the end of the movie to change roads. She's still an atheist, but is now more accepting of what people believe and can share the road more so to speak.
Yes, I think there's a lot of truth to what you're saying! I like what you've said about it being written as a "handshake." Thanks for sharing your thoughts and thanks for watching! (:
You mentioned a Swiss Breakfast. I lived in Zurich for nearly 6 years (Seebach/Oerlikon). I love Switzerland, love your reactions, and happy to find your channel.
I enjoyed your reactions. The two of you make a perfect pair because you see it from different sides. And congratulations to Jessica for decrypting the message before Hadden told us the answer, not to mention grokking the faith angle of the movie very quickly. As filmmakers I’d encourage you both to include comments on the filmmaking and craft of great movies, that’s a value added that most reactors don’t delve into (and I hope you focus on reacting to great movies!).
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and thanks for watching! Yes, we were considering including comments about the craft of filmmaking, but we weren't sure if this would be something people are interested in. There's always much to say about the writing, acting, directing, and even production design. We'll definitely keep your suggestion in mind. Thanks! (:
Mike's emotions during this movie was a roller coaster ride unto itself. You can tell right from that that he's a genuinely good guy with a big heart. I loved every second of this watch/reaction. Very interested to see more movies reviewed by you two!
this will always and forever be my favourite movie. I have watched it so many times. I love seeing the main character, a woman, passionate about something so much, believing in something so much, fighting for herself... I feel powerful watching it.
Im nit sure I agree. She doesn't know her experience was real. She says in her testimony that she has to accept it could have been a delusion. She's a scientist that has accepted what happened on faith.
@russellward4624 I disagree. If she had known that her headpiece had actually recorded eighteen hours of static, then she would've seized that as evidence of her story being true. It was only because the government suppressed that information, which then caused her to doubt her experiences.
What an great and enjoyable reaction. I've seen this movie many times but it fun to see the reactions of those who have not seen. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. A genuine reaction; thank you both!
My first reaction of yours, and it’s excellent. I like your overall presentation and editing choices. Hopefully you’ll have a little more time for discussion in the future, but that aside, thanks for not cutting the actual reaction too short, as so many reactors do.
Hi David, thank you so much for your kind words. Regarding editing, I'm a filmmaker myself and I'm trying to cut as much without losing the important moments and plot twists. Needless to say the better and the longer the movie is the more challenging the editing. Also, without constantly editing the scenes it becomes incredibly difficult to pass the "Copyright Claims" from the studio. Thanks for watching! (:
“Contact” was an awesome choice to watch and react to. This movie was a tribute to Carl Sagan, who wrote the book it is based on. That was a great reaction! Thank you! I don’t know if you react exclusively to movies, but if not, just let Jessica know about ABBA - if she is new to them, I’m positive she’ll love to dive into some real music … maybe react to some of their iconic pieces. You guys have such a sharp sense of justice - that is awesome. If you take suggestions in the comments, I have some: “Independence Day”, “Back To The Future” trilogy, “Star Wars” saga, “The Green Mile”, “Liar Liar”, “Mrs. Doubtfire” and many others as well (if you haven’t seen these movies yet, that is) - for many of them you’ll need to have lots of tissues at hand.. Looking forward to your next reaction. Salutations from a Romanian brother …
Hello Kay, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I made notes of your suggestions. We just reacted to LIAR LIAR and the video is going through the "Copyright" process, which is an ordeal. If it goes through then we'll release it today. Also, thanks for the music suggestions. I know ABBA was before Jessica's time, but she loves music and I'll pass it on. And regarding Carl Saga, yes, I saw the shoutout in the end credits. Thanks for watching, my Romanian brother... (:
@@BossMovieReactions Thank you very much! You are among the very few who actually read the comments and the annoyingly few who take a few seconds to even reply - that makes you special. Great review. Contact is one of my favorite movies. I remember watching it when it came out at the Uptown theater in Washington, DC. Seeing it on a huge 70' by 40' foot curved screen was an amazing experience. I've always been a big fan of Carl Sagan, from watching Cosmos when I was a kid to pouring thorough National Geographic books that explored space. I actually got to meet him and shake his hand in 1985, which was incredibly exciting. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. I try to watch it at least once a year and it never fails to be a great experience!
When I was a Boy Scout, a car I was traveling back to Albuquerque drove by the VLA and I thought "What in the heck is that?" and then went back to sleep. Years later during th summer before medical school, I was living at the Alamo Navajo Reservation shadowing providers very close to the VLA. One weekend afternoon I went to visit the VLA and kept laughing because there were MANY warning signs to watch out for the rattlesnakes in the area.
I have mentioned this on the Arrival reaction. I watch so many reaction channels. My favorites are Popcorn in Bed, Rob Squad and Just Trust Ash… I just discovered you two and truly appreciate both of you. You two are genuine and show heart and emotion that related to me. Keep it up… I look forward to more from you. Faith and science have entirely different purposes. Very few scientists would say that science is meant to replace faith, or that science is a kind of religion. Also, Palmer decided in his own mind that Ellie was saying she believed 95% are deluded. She didn't say that, and he had no evidence to support his statement. She remained silent on the subject, as a good scientist should.
Yes, agreed, Ellie didn't say that she believes that 95% are deluded and science is not meant to replace faith! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and thanks for watching! (:
If you really want to know the mind of Carl Sagan, listen to his "Pale Blue Dot" speech. It is probably the best speech ever written by man. I have this book. When my grandfather died, we were cleaning out his bookcase and I took it. It is on a shelf in my room on a shelf, all by itself. Being that "waste of space."
Wonderful movie, wonderful reaction. One of my all time favourite movies. Am catching up on your earlier reactions - bit late to the party on this one! Jodie Foster brings such integrity and credibility to her role in this. Stunning performance.
There is no way in hell they would be given any time with the VLA to listen to nothing more than background noise with an almost zero chance of an actual legit ET signal being picked up. Other astrophysicists would be furious to have such a valuable radio telescope tied up for so long. It's a terrible choice of a telescope to scan for ET signals anyway. Still a fun movie though.
Yeah, you're probably right, but at least they do make that point in the movie as well. But you're definitely right, still a fun movie! Thanks for watching! (:
LOVE this film... written by the great scientist Carl Sagan... and... THEY DO make movies like that: A BRILLIANT follow up film (if you haven't seen it) would be "ARRIVAL"... which is one of the most remarkable and brilliant films I've ever experienced. Also taking a scientific look at aliens. Great reaction... looking forward to more!!
Nice reaction, guys! I like how Jessica recognized Robert Zemeckis, who is one of my favorite directors. Can't tell you how many times I see reactors watch the "Back to the Future" movies and mention Spielberg, and not Zemeckis. Zemeckis was the director, and the director is the most responsible person for crafting the movie. Don't know if you noticed, but a Zemeckis favorite, Alan Silvestri composed the music, which I feel elevated the movie that much more. I really enjoyed how you really watched and didn't make jokes or comments over top the movie. (A lot of reactors do that, thinking that's informative and entertaining...it isn't.) I like how you noticed the turnaround Ellie had to incorporate into her mindset. I also enjoyed how Mike noticed right away that where she was looked like the picture she drew. Very nice job, guys. Oh yeah, almost forgot. I find Jena Malone (young Ellie) adorable, and it was really nice how you left in when she asked if they could talk to Mom and how she tried to reach her father on the shortwave radio. :)
Thank you so much for your kind words, Christopher. Yes, Zemeckis rocks and should not be mistaken for Spielberg. I absolutely loved the music, but wasn't aware of Alan Silvestri (I'll keep that name in mind). Jena IS adorable (great casting). The better the movie, the more difficult the editing, the harder it is to pass the copyright claim process. I'm so happy I finally got CONTACT through the process (took me about a week). Anyway, thanks for watching! (:
@@MikeBoss1 Speilberg was not only the producer on Back to the Future, but had he not championed it, it likely never would have been made. Reactors make the mistake of seeing his name on the opening credits for Back to the Future and not appreciate what "producer" means. And the person above who credits Zemeckis as if it was his idea and his movie doesn't give any credit to Bob Gale, a complete a-hole, but the guy who wrote the movie and worked with Zemeckis for 5 years to make it happen.

this is a fantastic story because within the realm of science and science fiction, you find humor, pain, and love. even the ending... when I saw this in the theater and the words, "For Carl" came on the screen, you could hear the audience gasp and give a collective... awwww! If you guys aren't familiar with Carl Sagan, going back and watching Cosmos is a great way to learn about him a bit, and then there's alway the famous Pale Blue Dot speech. Hi Liam, yes, in my opinion, he definitely knew all-along, and the reason why he didn't just say it is because the "Government" wants to keep "world-changing" information secret, all in the name of power and control. The suicide pill given to astronauts is (probably) a silly myth/conspiracy crap. I forget which astronaut said this about that, but he said (paraphrased), "why would we need a suicide pill? It's astonomically hard to stay *alive* in space. If we needed to kill ourselves we just have stop pressing buttons or simply open the door." 🤔😂
Haha, yeah, that might be so... 😄. Although, in this unprecedented situation where there might be an encounter with another species, it might be advisable to be prepared (at least that's what THEY were thinking), who knows? (:
I am so glad you guys decided to react to this superb film now, in 2024, when we are yet again embroiled in numerous violent conflicts around the world that have at their base, a large degree of ideology as their causes. It was great to watch the two of you get one of the many important points that Science and Religion are at their essence, after the same thing - Truth about the Big Kahuna questions that face Humanity. It is however possible that you missed an important boundary, the difference between the open mind of Matthew McConnaughey's character's spirituality and the radical bomber evangelist who suffers the delusion of dead certainty and is willing to murder and die to stifle mere questioning. We need people like Carl Sagan who see the world and Humanity through such kind and open eyes. Thanks, guys. Thank you both.
Thanks for your comments and your kind words. Yes, I do agree with your assessment regarding the radical bomber... We have quite a bit of that worldwide, and it's not good. You're right, we need people like Carl Sagan who see the world through open eyes. Thanks for watching! (:

I still think Carl wrote the book in hopes that one day, there'd be a 'cease-fire' between those of us who don't believe in gods, and those who do. I'd love to see it happen. So many of my friends/family are "believers". I don't want to fight about it, I just want to hold 'em close/hold their hand/pat their back/have a beer or three around the campfire. Preferably in a place dark enough at night where we can all just look up at the universe. That being said..I think this is another example of the screenplay expressing the idea better than the book did. Sometimes, people in our industry can do that. That's our power.

The balance that Mike & Jessica bring to reactions are unique which I believe are genuine which adds to the entertainment for me while reliving classic movies through different eyes. I appreciate that we all don't think or react the same way & interpret media differently though to be honest, it is nice when others think likewise or on the flip side notice dialogue, acting & film making via a different lens that enhances movies that we already know & love. Just my opinion & enjoyed your post which enabled me to articulate my thoughts on my new favourite reaction channel. I hope you have a wonderful day/evening.

Awesome review, one of my favorites for sure. My one gripe with this movie is I really wish the movie did something to explain the 'hydrogen times pi' line. It's actually really important because that along with the hydrogen frequency are the main frequencies SETI listens on for alien communication as they assume those are the frequencies intelligent civilizations would be listening for and broadcasting on themselves, and it was on the hydrogen line where the 'WOW' signal was heard back in the 1970s.
@Boss Movie Reactions (Happy belated Birthday btw Mike, i'd no idea i'd missed it going by without a well wish) A very sciences and philosophical driven gem of reaction to a good film, I feel like this was pre training of sorts for Matthew McConaughey that helped him doing performances for I N T E R S T E L L A R, which I've no doubt your reaction to will be appearing on the channel one day, I look forward to it even now.

Maybe there IS an afterlife?

Haha, yeah, it's a fantastic movie indeed! Thanks for watching! (:
The idea of the opening shots where the camera panned out of the solar system with the music and audio track playing in the background was to show how far signals from Earth would travel through space. As a matter of fact, NASA had placed a Golden Record on one of the Voyager spacecrafts launched in 1977 that's now billions of miles going into interstellar space.
Yes, that was sooo smartly done. And I've read about the Golden Record a long time ago. Fascinating stuff! Thanks for sharing this info and thanks for watching! (:
Billionaire, played by John Hurt...stays in air as cancer grows slower...sad😪
Yeah, I was wondering if that was true, but I'm sure it is, considering how smart that movie is! (:

We sent out Voyage 1 satellite when I was in high school. It had important recordings etched on gold plates, archival newscasts, radio transmissions. It's still out there!!! Sent images & sounds throughout my life. I'm 69 now. First Star Trek movie was all about "Voyager1"👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤❤❤❤❤👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I remember reading about the recordings etched on gold plates! Such an interesting topic! Thanks for watching! (:
Yes, fascinating! (:
Carl Sagan did a segment on the gold record sent with Voyager on his Cosmos show, and in his book Cosmos, which I have read numerous times. I highly recommend it.
OMG I forgot Matthew was in here. Now he's starred and co-starred in two of the best movies ever. Contact and Interstellar.
Yes, the good old Matthew... "Interstellar" was recommended quite often. Thanks for watching! (:

Two very powerful films. Agreed.

Glad you two noticed the medicine cabinet "mirror shot". I was a lowly production assistant on this film, and I regretted not asking how it was done. Cheers 🍸
Yeah, that was an amazing shot. I found some RUclips videos that explain how it was done. Fascinating! Thanks for watching! We appreciate it! (:

Im nit sure I agree. She doesn't know her experience was real. She says in her testimony that she has to accept it could have been a delusion. She's a scientist that has accepted what happened on faith.
@@russellward4624 I think saying "She's a scientist who has accepted what happened on faith" makes sense. (:
@russellward4624 I disagree. If she had known that her headpiece had actually recorded eighteen hours of static, then she would've seized that as evidence of her story being true. It was only because the government suppressed that information, which then caused her to doubt her experiences.

Ditto !

Great review. Contact is one of my favorite movies. I remember watching it when it came out at the Uptown theater in Washington, DC. Seeing it on a huge 70' by 40' foot curved screen was an amazing experience. I've always been a big fan of Carl Sagan, from watching Cosmos when I was a kid to pouring thorough National Geographic books that explored space.

And the person above who credits Zemeckis as if it was his idea and his movie doesn't give any credit to Bob Gale, a complete a-hole, but the guy who wrote the movie and worked with Zemeckis for 5 years to make it happen.

this is a fantastic story because within the realm of science and science fiction, you find humor, pain, and love. even the ending... when I saw this in the theater and the words, "For Carl" came on the screen, you could hear the audience gasp and give a collective... awwww! Little Ellie was not blaming herself for her father's death. She was giving a scientific explanation in rejection of the priest's explanation.

Yes, purposely hidden indeed. Had to look up the word "disanalogous." Thanks for watching! (:
Yes, thanks for watching! (:
Always nice besides being envious of a Gorgeous Couple...Best of Luck on the Channel...this is a great film.
Thank you, Red Sinter, we appreciate your kind words. Yes, this has become one of my favorite films so far! Thanks for watching! (:
Great reaction! You should check out Pans Labyrinth!
Thanks, "boxingfan" I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for watching! (:
Thanks! (:
Subcribed. I love the guy. Thinks like a scientist and isnt afraid to cry. Im so sorry, that i forgot both of your names. I disagree with the woman. She is obviously a strong believer and couldn't accept the method of proof. Which in many ways was perfect for this film. Any solo reactions?
Hello Catriona! Thanks for watching, thanks for commenting, and thanks for subscribing. My name is Mike and my wife is Jessica. No solo reactions yet, we usually do it together! Again, thanks for watching, we're happy to have you on board! (:
@catrionacolville2192 I also really enjoy Mike's critical thinking, emotions & analysis as well his opinions regarding film making regarding certain angles/frames of certain scenes of which I know nothing about. As a new subscriber myself, I'd recommend his Whiplash reaction (if you haven't already seen it) as am going through each reaction which I have already become addicted to & already look forward to every new video. I only found this channel recently & was hooked from Jessica's infectious laughter almost immediately during the Dumb & Dumber reaction. I hope you have a wonderful day/evening.
i dont know why im saying this.. maybe bc this is my fav movie and my dad died when i was little just like this movie (which is why is one of my fav.. who knows) but if you have a daughter (which from the way you said your intro i think you do)... reach out to her and love her.... MORE. You never know when your last or her last time will be
Hello Dai, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Although I don't have any kids, your suggestion is still appreciated and important. It also counts for parents and close friends in general. Thanks for watching! (:
Intelligent movies and intelligent commentary. Thank you.
Thanks, Warren, we appreciate your kind words! (:
Awesome review, one of my favorites for sure. My one gripe with this movie is I really wish the movie did something to explain the 'hydrogen times pi' line. It's actually really important because that along with the hydrogen frequency are the main frequencies SETI listens on for alien communication as they assume those are the frequencies intelligent civilizations would be listening for and broadcasting on themselves, and it was on the hydrogen line where the 'WOW' signal was heard back in the 1970s.
Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing! (:
@Boss Movie Reactions
(Happy belated Birthday btw Mike, i'd no idea i'd missed it going by without a well wish)
A very sciences and philosophical driven gem of reaction to a good film,
I feel like this was pre training of sorts for Matthew McConaughey
that helped him doing performances for I N T E R S T E L L A R,
which I've no doubt your reaction to will be appearing on the channel one day, I look forward to it even now.
Thank you, Adam! Always good to see you here! Yes, Interstellar is definitely on our list! Thanks for watching! (:
