It's pretty unfair to expect so much from Bruce Lee considering the martial contributions he's already made considering the time in history, his smaller frame, and his legacy. Beating someone significantly larger with proper sparring skill is too much to ask of almost everyone. Proof that if your life revolves around being tougher or more lethal than the other people you don't like will make you miserable. I'm afraid that Anglosphere culture can exacerbate this, which definitely includes Asian American men. I do HEMA but I learnt to manage my expectations and goals so that it's fun and not stressful.

Dragonball had a caricature of Bruce that gets beaten up by a child Goku in a fighting tournament, Fei Long and Marshall Law are both often portrayed as joke characters in the Tekken and Streetfighter games especially in their story cut scenes, once upon a time in Hong Kong cinema there were a slew of Bruceploitation films where kung fu movie directors would cast actors who bore a physical resemblance to Bruce Lee in order to capitalize off Bruce Lees fame, they would often market these films as authentic Bruce Lee films too, look up actors like Kim Tai Chung, Bruce Li, Bruce Lai, Dragon Lee, Bruce Le and gosh the list could go on, in fact... Game of Death was incomplete by the time of Bruce Lees death, they hired stuntmen like Kim Tai Chung, and the then unknown Yuen Biao and Yuen Wah to don stage make up and wigs to play Bruce in order to finish the film and they even still went on to make a sequel Game of Death 2 which featured a cardboard cut out of Bruce and clips from Way of the Dragon in the film to give the illusion that Bruce acted in the film, Donnie Yen and Sammo hung both also made films where they play caricatures inspired by Bruce called Enter the Fat Dragon... So you wanna talk about disrespectful, the very same people that praise him today also disrespectfully profited off his name and have portrayed him in a mocking manner before in the past, and mind you these were fellow Asian people, for all those that like to say, the reason Tarantino did that was because he's racist.

Bruce Lee actually taught me to "embrace my own potential", even though it was achieved in a significantly different way that anyone would think at the first glance...
I used to be BL's die-hard fan in the older days. I even studied Wing Chun for a couple of years (I know, I know...). I realized later, in a humiliating way, that WC was not the most useful fighting tool, when I tried to spar with a guy that did boxing. We didn't spar during WC classes, because - Sensei's words - "you cannot spar in WC, as it is meant to actually hurt someone, therefore sparring is out of question" ("it's for DA STREETZ, hell yeah!").
Yet the funniest thing from these times was that Sensei was telling stories that he went here and there, got into a bar fight, kicked someone's ass... These events happened very often and always "right after we separated" so that none of the students could see it. What a strange coincidence(s)!
So anyway, after this famous sparring with the guy that did boxing (not even a boxer), I thought to myself that perhaps it's time to grow up and as a result, I signed out of the "Cult of Bruce Lee" and never had any idols to worship ever since. I got bigger, got a job and got into urban exploration. And you know what? Even when visiting some old hotels, hospitals, bunkers, palaces, often at night and meeting homeless guys, drunks, there were no fights. Never. Ever. Yet real fights "happened" to my ex-Sensei all the time. In public, crowded places. Life can be full of surprises sometimes!
Now I know this story sounds like it was made up by some sworn BL hater, even I find it hard to believe and try to deny it (as it is downright embarrasing to me), but that's actually how it was. Unfortunately...
But hell, I'm much happier nowadays than back then anyway. And yet BL's movies are still fun!

But he lacked what we have now, there wasn't even kickboxing in the US then, let alone MMA or any full contact sport MA. The full contact sports are the anvil where efficacy has been forged. The Bruce Lee of 1972 wouldn't beat a modern UFC lightweight...but that modern fighter has the benefit of learning from people that took the seed of Bruce Lee's philosophy and grew it into what we have today. My view as a JKD instructor: Bruce Lee was someone who was in fact ahead of his time in martial arts, in what regards training methods (sparring, focus mitts and heavy bag training, conditioning, nutrition). In the world of martial arts in the 60's and 70's almost nobody trained with a scientific approach. Also at a technical level, Bruce Lee brought different approach, combining boxing, light footwork and kicking, different from the more static Karate approach. Bruce Lee's approach would have a big influence in American Kickboxing. Also at a philosophical level, the idea that styles are limiting and you should be able to express yourself was also something new. Having said all that above, I don't think that BL was a super man that he would defeat Mike Tyson like some fan boys say. Finally the latest stage of JKD is a great martial art, different from other striking arts and in a way it's still very effective martial art, even with all the evolution in martial arts in the past40 years.

At the start of this year I stopped lying to myself about my level of fitness and weight, "I'm not out of shape or overweight, it wasn't that long ago that I could do 20+ pull ups, 53 push ups in a minute, 200 squats in a row etc.." That was 5 years ago, I've gained 40 pounds of fat during that time, can't even do 40 pushups without breaks anymore.
Lost 25 lbs in 3 months, really suprised just how easy it has been.

Michael Jai White would beat Bruce Lee by a large percentage. The weight difference is ridiculously big, Bruce Lee could supposedly hit like someone more than his own weight, but that doesn't matter much when Jai White can hit the same if not WAY more, and has more muscle. Jai White is also still alive, so he potentially has a more refined skill set and experience than Bruce Lee.

Greetings Coach. I have a curious hypothetical, as I struggle to get my undercoordinated lower body to be better at footwork... Gene Kelly, was in great shape and had tremendous coordination, ala, insane dancing skills. Do you think that kind of lower body coordination together with his conditioning would have translated well to striking? I would dare say that Jackie Chan's footwork looks similar to Gene Kelly's. I realize that both are screen actors, and one isn't even portraying fighting, but it seems like that level of control over movement on the feet could make either one a menacing boxer. Any opinion? Cheers!

There were people getting angry at Chuck Norris for saying that Bruce can't compete with him in real life because of the fact that Chuck actually competed and won in real tournaments and the fact that Chuck is a much bigger man. The Bruce Lee fanbois are beyond help. This one time I ran into one of them and when I commented that Bruce Lee has no actual competition record, he looked like he was going to have a heart attack.
There's the other extreme too where these well known RUclips commentators were saying that even they could beat up a 125 lb Bruce Lee, or the awful representation of Bruce by Tarantino. Bruce was probably a super lean 140 when he was healthy and before he had the pain killer issues and couldn't eat properly. In his last movie, he was unable to eat properly and overworking so much that he was down to a frail 125 lbs when he had drug complications and died when they were afraid to call the hospital because he was at another woman's house. So yeah, probably anybody could beat a dying 125 lb Bruce Lee.

    • @peterwang5660

so drug complications caused the brain enema or something that killed him? And are you saying he was off on an affair while this happened?

Jesus, okay, like Bruce Lee worshippers are a problem, but I feel like people in the martial arts community have been influenced by backfire effect and now say everything about Bruce was shit as a reaction. And it’s not racist, but you can’t blame people for bringing race into it, because Bruce is like, the only reason Chinese culture has any semblance of tolerance or respect in the West. Which is why there are sensitive feelings around his reputation.
