I’ve just watched the QT interview and they talk a lot about Bruce Lee & you’re right Joe didn’t say any of this to QT… Tarantino didn’t go to town on Lee but he definitely did on his wife Wow!!! Check it out and not the 5min clip on RUclips
And you don`t think it was hard for Bruce Lee to get into movies and become successful in Hollywood as a minority in the 1960s? I don`t swear that much but a better question would be what the fuck do YOU mean Bruce Lee was in movies and saying fuck you mean after that? The implication you seem to be making is that because he was a star in movies it wasn`t hard for him to get there is absurd. Bruce Lee had to work hard to get where he was, like Shannon Lee said, twice as hard as guys like Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio had to.
Except he never competed at any level. Every story about him is made up. He spent his entire life in front of a camera yet never managed to record any of these 'marvelous' feats of athleticism. Bruce Lee fanboys are the worst. MMA has destroyed asian martial arts. They are kaput. American Wrestling is the most dominant martial art on the planet and there is NOTHING you can do about it.
Bruce would have admired the way Cliff fought with his brain, not just his brawn. He deliberately takes the first hit to make himself look weak, get a good look at his opponents moves, and to make "Bruce" drop his guard. Then when "Bruce" tried the same move again, Cliff was ready with a perfect counter. Anyone who thinks the real Bruce Lee wouldn't appreciate how smart that play was is sadly misguided
this guy, and then there's that black guy. lol, I like Joe, and his views still except for his Greta Thunberg take, she's 15 and deserves the praise she's getting. but these other guys are just dumb schmucks...sorry schuab , shmuck*

The reason why Bruce Lee refused to fight during his time was because all Martial Arts Tournament at that time were traditional and have restricting rules that he thought was not really great for expressing one's full fighting potential. In other words, he didn't fight MMA at that time because MMA didn't exist during his time in the first place.
No the reason he didn't actually compete is because he was making movies about being a bad ass. If he loses a real fight, then no one is interested in his movies anymore. He had to keep up the mystique to keep the money coming in.

@@kristhovaldez8819 I agree, I'm not saying he wasn't skilled...but people get all wrapped up in the "fantasy" of Bruce Lee. He was 5'7 and about 150lbs. He would have fought in the lightweight class. Lightweight fighters like Khabib, Poirier, Gaethje, Oliveira...would have dusted him pretty quick in my opinion.
@@deltawhiskey1398 there is no poirier or khabib at that time. these UFC guys trained of decades of martial arts knowledge. no way they dust a bruce lee in the 60s-70s. they would be just another regular one dimensional fighter at the time. bruce was the first who trained and utilize multiple forms. no bruce no mma.
@@johnnysliick3064 We are talking prime versus prime not time travel...also the Gracie family is more responsible for the evolution of MMA than Bruce ever was. It wasn't until jiu jitsu was show cased in 1993 that fighters began incorporating submissions and grappling with their striking on a wide level.
The problem I had with the movie is that it portrayed Bruce as cocky, arrogant and or goofy, like an inflated character of himself. He was the intellectual philosopher type of a person, I remember watching the Green Hornet on TV before his death. As far as his toughness and fighting abilities, at that time he could take on guys 50-100 lbs heavier than himself, maybe more and would have beat them. Compared to today's level of MMA he would still be amazing, maybe only able to give up 30-50 lbs. Bruce was confident in his abilities, but also very realistic how they compared to others. When asked who would win him or Muhammed Ali, he immediately said; Ali have you seen the size of his fists!? Lee 5-7 135 lbs to Ali 6-3 230 both at the top of their style of fighting. Other Martial Art pros of the day; Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, Jim Kelly, Danny Inosanto and many more have all confirmed that Bruce was at a higher level than others, he hit like a heavy weight not a 135 lb guy. He was the first to combine nutrition, athletic training and a variety of martial arts that led to today's MMA. Although not a God or Superhero, he was unique, he was special, he was the first to achieve a much higher level of fitness and ability. Bruce Lee was definitely not someone from my time but I have an uncle who I believe is now on his 60s that was highly influenced by him. I got to see my uncle be very passionate about teaching self-defense to his children including myself when I was only 5 or 6. Then a couple years later, I went to go live for a while in Guanajuato Mexico at my grandparents ranch. My grandparents had an old storage space with many old interesting things from those vintage disc players, large collection of folk music discs, magazines, etc. Anyhow, being the kid I was, I just kept looking around and I found two interesting items: an old book of one of Bruce Lee's fighting methods and some nunchucks made of solid wood with a metal chain attached. As I saw these items, I was an awe and right away my uncle came to mind. I brought it up to my grandparents and my mom, and they indeed confirmed with me that it was my uncle's stuff. Afterwards, they detailed some stories of my uncle beating up grown men who tried to even attack him with knifes. In fact, it turned out my uncle was known in his ranch to be the toughest man in the ranch among the majority of men in his community. My mom apparently got to even see him in action when having to stand up against guys who tried to get out of hand with him or his family members. Since he grew up in a ranch, I had assumed and still assume that all his Bruce Lee stuff material or learnings must have been brought up from Mexico City. Since I was told that him and my grandpa would go there often for work and stay for some long periods of time.

To be fair since Bruce's death, Chuck has started to claim he would have beaten Bruce in a fight. Something he never dared say when Lee was alive. Chucks ego would get in the way of his honesty.
The cool thing about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is that it's in the same vein as Inglorious Bastards, it's alternate history. Events happen differently than they did historically. The version of Bruce Lee in the film isn't a direct representation of him, but the alternate version of him.
No way! I thought it was totally real! You’re telling me Brad Pitt didn’t kill off the Manson gang while tripping on LSD in real life?! What would we do without you explaining to us that a Quentin Tarantino movie is fictitious
If you watch interviews of actors/martial artists talking about Bruce Lee, they talk about sparring or fighting with him. Some of them don't really admit getting beat, some of them admit getting beat and explain how strong he really is. I honestly believe that Bruce was fr a badass and can really kick ass because at some point in his life, he got into a little trouble which did make him a street fighter as well. There are a number of pro ring fighters in the past who swore by Lee. Chuck Norris was one, Joe Lewis another, and Lewis "Skipper" Mullins, yet another just to name a few. Almost every significant fighter he featured in his movies was a champion, master or grandmaster in his/her own right and those were the ones he usually ended up squaring off with at the movie's end. Don't know why Tarrantino portrayed Lee the way he did. Honestly, I was a die hard Lee fan as a teen and drank the kool-aid of his invincibility. Yet for some reason, a UFC fanboy thinks differently. Huh. I’d rather take the word of those who knew him then listen to a pointless argument from a hater who doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Like I said: people don’t hold records on streetfights. Lee was a streetfighter. It’s the whole reason he began martial arts in the first place. It was literally impossible to be a rich kid in Hong Kong without running into trouble on the street. When he started martial arts, he was taught Wing Tsun by Yip Man. Lee would then take place in more streetfights from the Wing Tsun Clan against the Choi Li Fut Clan, a famous rivalry between to martial art groups, as far as I know. Your argument is invalid. Jose Sosa no, in real life Sharon Tate was horrifically murdered by the Manson family, and Cliff Booth and Rick Dalton aren’t real people, it’s a fairy tale set in our world.
The use of the words "Once Upon A Time" most likely comes down to the fact some of Tarantino's biggest influences are the movies "Once Upon A Time in America" (A true story) and "Once Upon A Time in the West" (not a fairytale), Tarantino has said publicly how much he admires Sergio Leone films, and every character in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is portrayed completely accurate apart from Bruce Lee, anyone who has seen Bruce Lee in anything would know he's not like that, yet Steve McQueen and Sharon Tate character-wise are exact to real life, Tarantino got it wrong, it's that simple
Lee was always in great shape, but he wasn't that shredded in 1969, when the movie was set. He was bigger and slimmer in 1971, but the actor looked fine. The actor's arms were even arguably too big.
Both of them are wrong. All the characters in the show are real people. Rick and Cliff are based off of Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham(Burt's stunt guy). The only thing about the story that doesn't really match up is the end. Honestly, I think Tarentino wanted to rewrite what happened to Sharon. Instead of everyone dying to Manson's gang they lived. It's an homage
That would've been a good excuse, except Tarantino has defended his portrayal of Bruce Lee and has never said anything about it being warped in Brad Pitt's head. Based on his own words, Tarantino believed Bruce was a cocky guy who had a big mouth, and that's obviously how he chose to portray him. So Tarantino thought he was being accurate. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have done very thorough research and probably just wrote the scene recklessly. Given that every other real-life character is treated with realism (even manson and his cult followers aren't parodied, just what happens to them), this is pretty disappointing.

How about everybody takes into account its a fictional depiction of late 60s Hollywood, and is written not with the priority of accuracy, but with intrigue and entertainment. Also, having Cliff beat Bruce Lee helps sell him taking on all the Manson murderers.
Bruce Lee was crazy tough. It makes no difference if you were a muscle bound gorilla who weighed 500 pounds because if you decided to attack Bruce, he'd place a blow to your knee and that would have been the end of the fight before it even started. He was a thinker who knew all the ways around the brute power of an opponent. Bruce just would not give up...

I’ve seen this clip in the movie a few times now and I’m convinced Brad Pitts character imagines it. He imagines he fights Bruce Lee and wins I’m sure we’d all do the same 😂
I love how Joe never assumes the question. He always asks questions to clarify and ensure he understands what his guest is asking or what his guest is saying. Rare trait.
@Marcus Haughney But it does display the intended emphasis that would be done verbally. As this is a discussion medium, there are exceptions for the purpose of making communication clearer. Pretty sure it's done in many fiction stories as well for the same reason.
He created an entire way of martial Arts. Bruce couldn't be beat. No one beat him. He was great no question. Tarintions movies. All made Bruce Lee great this one made hom a tool.
It was a great take, the way QT approached the Bruce Lee persona. We immortalize certain people and the balls to dismantle a character like Bruce, showing that he's just like anyone else is pretty funny.
He has no consistent thoughts. He says things only because he has a microphone and he doesn't believe half the shit he says. Sometimes he will take a position because hes trying to make a conversation move forward. I can admire that but the problem is he just doesn't know a whole lot so hes usually just superficial.
Chuck is on record as saying BRUCE was very egotistical. When Lee cut himself in a scene trying to disarm Noris of a glass bottle he couldn't get over it and the film crew heard him say very dishonorable things about getting revenge on Chucky.Norris claims he didn't wear body armor under his clothing so BRUCE could take out his anger for real in the following scenes, fracturing Nor is ribs.I know this story should make YA wonder why a director would allow real glass on their set ? Its all Hollywood and "Once upon a time".Fact is Chuck Norris version is known.Lee was great but he was also an actor. They create illusions,it's their job,and of course the scene in OUATIH is Pitts characters version of events. Its all high fantasy and Bruce Lee may have liked the scene had he lived to see it !
@@jamesburnsfisher3304 Educate yourself. That anecdote you're wrecking was not Chuck Norris but Bob Wall -- it was the scene in Enter the Dragon where a beaten Oharra grabs a couple bottles and breaks them. In Hong Kong at that time spun sugar glass was not readily available so they used real bottles. The choreography was a little off so Lee jammed his hand into the bottle and was cut. I stubbed my toe this morning and I only cried for 20 mins
He was in movies... Fuck you mean
Right!😳
still, not as tough as Chuck Norris.
If you read Bruce Lee's works, it's clear he was extremely insightful . Bruce Lee was MMA 30 years before MMA existed.

There are a number of pro ring fighters in the past who swore by Lee. Chuck Norris was one, Joe Lewis another, and Lewis "Skipper" Mullins, yet another just to name a few. Bruce Lee said in an interview he hates the word "super star" when he was called that, followed by his famous speech about water. He was a humble, philosophical guy.

@@gilgamesh5796 Want to know why? Because Joe is passionate about MMA, and when you're talking about one of the most influential figures in MMA, he's probably got a huge soft spot for Bruce Lee. All evidence points to Bruce Lee being a respectful philosopher and skilled martial artist, so of course Joe is sour about it. Especially since Bruce Lees family has tried so hard to keep Bruce's legacy positive and alive.

You should see Lee's stepping sidekick to a heavy bag. He kicked it so hard the bag almost hit the ceiling. Sure, it's not a 'flying kick' per se but, like Masvidal's flying knee, all it took to reach sprint speed was two steps. So, it was a flying kick of sorts, just not like in the movies. Right foot connected as the left foot hit the ground.
That was so hilarious the way he slammed him into the car. For some reason that made me laugh so freakin hard.
Bruce fought to teach his art....yes, he could fight. What made him stand out was his ability to keep learning and evolving his art. That and his natural speed made him unique. This is just hate for hate sake from Schaub and his mediocre career.
Tarintino used "Bruce Lee" to establish Brad Pitt's character as tough. He was used as a literary device.
@jreclips
It's not about Bruce Lee losing, it's not about the bad fighting and acting, it's how retarded Bruce Lee was depicted in the movie. Look at his green hornet casting, he's way more composed than what the movie shows.
Youre a literary device
Scout Brad's character is an insanely tough guy hidden in hollywood, and I think all main characters have their unfinished back story anyway(e.g. Wife killing?), beating Bruce Lee in a real fight wouldn't unnecessarily distract the audience. I'm all for the two having a real reason for conflict, e.g. Some guy saying Bruce can beat Ali, Brad's character doesn't believe it, Bruce doesn't mind trying to show off but unexpectedly loses, instead of being a bragging idiot.

Bruce Lee singlehandedly flipped the stereotype of Asians as small, passive and quiet with his passion, originality, intensity and dedication to martial arts.
“Was Bruce Lee actually badass?” Well if you fckng check the information, you’ll see that most of the world champions and great fighters of that era, participated in his training classes to see and learn his techniques.
S Tra How do you get Steven Seagal from Bruce Lee?
Fadbamse Oh? Ok, so I guess that him being the first person to do MMA doesn’t matter. I guess that him teaching many big name martial artists and improving their skills doesn’t mean jackshit. I guess that creating a whole ass fighting system which is pretty much the first MMA doesn’t mean anything. Dude, Lee was a street fighter. It’s a very well known fact. People don’t hold records on street fights. And you don’t need a professional record to be considered a fighter.
Fadbamse How does it not matter? He literally brought MMA to life. Without him, martial arts would not be where it is today. His knowledge of martial arts, and this is said by many professional fighters, was years ahead of his time. What you are is a blind UFC fanboy who doesn’t know jackshit about martial arts. Literally every professional fighter today, and those who knew him back then (Gene LeBell, Chuck Norris, Bob Wall, Jim Kelly, Joe Lewis the kickboxer) give their utmost respect to Lee.
Bye fanboy.
Fadbamse Ok then, blind fanboy. Whatever you want to tell yourself. If you wanna go against the word of those who knew him and saw him in action and those who studied him, be my guest. Just don’t think that whatever you say is the truth.
Fadbamse Clearly, you’re no fan of reading. 🙄 Would you rather me take the word of those who didn’t know him? People who haven’t seen Bruce with their own eyes? And you act like I’m devoid of logic.
Bruce Lee’s portrayal in the movie was through the mind of Brad Pitts character. It’s how a white guy in the 60s would’ve imagined him at the time. That whole scene was a daydream
Jared it has never been confirmed that Bruce Lee’s character was seen in the mind of Brad Pitt’s character. Quentin Tarantino has made it clear that he believes that Bruce Lee was a cocky person in real life, so it’s pretty clear the portrayal of Bruce Lee is how Quentin views him.
Bruce Lee was an actor. Even Jet Li mentioned if he was ever in danger, he'll be the first to run.

The scene was also Brad Pitt’s memory of events, so it was just what he was thinking about and he’s easily an unreliable narrator.
Sebastian Boyce that's a pretty good point sebastian
Good point
exactly this, a lot of people not getting the point of the scene
The movie doesn't have a narrator. It's not Forrest Gump.
