@Loafy you do realize that mma(mixed martial arts) is more than just grappling yea, Helio knew a few different styles of grappling but that was still in that realm, whereas Bruce Introduced the idea of mixing several styles of martial arts both grappling styles and Stand up styles together...Now mind you Bruce was only one of the many who contributed to mma, He was just the most recognized and famous for putting out there. Either way you look at it though this portrayal of Bruce is very laudable at best, He was definitely cocking but he also had the skill and know how to back it up. I'm sure there were many people who could have challenged Bruce, however I dont think Bruce would have fought this way. He himself has even said he wouldnt ever get that fancy in a real fight. He would stress, how important simplicity is and how important it is to not waste energy. Bruce was a tactician, he wasnt just a fighter for show.
@@johnmatonne7834Ahaa. His own movies give other impression about him. Maybe I confused, because Tarantino is same person in his movies and in real life.
Bruce Lee did actually talk about what would happen if he fought Mohamad Ali. He said that even with all his skill, Mohamad Ali would make quick work of him because he was simply much larger with more strength and reach than Bruce Lee. Of course that would make for a less entertaining movie scene, but it's worth noting that the real Bruce Lee, while he talked a big game, wasn't as arrogant as this version.
Yeah I've seen a lot of Bruce Lee interviews and he never comes off cocky --- usually a humble dude who knows he can't beat guys much bigger than him like Ali or even Kareem
One key thing to remember about this scene: This is Cliff’s recollection of events after remembering what Rick told him about the gaffer for Lancer being the same guy who did it for Green Hornet. So he’s just remembering Bruce a different way than others would.
Fun fact (with some parts to taken with a grain of salt) : Gene Lobell (the real life inspiration for cliff) was a legendary stuntman but also happened to be a martial arts master (judo and wrestling I believe. And is often regarded as a pioneer of the sports and was known in some areas as “the godfather of grappling” ).They brought him in as Bruce Lee reportedly had the habit of actually striking the stunt men as Bruce believed it wouldn’t look realistic otherwise and there was very few people with comparable skills so their answer was to bring Gene in. There was a small fight but Gene and Bruce quickly became friends and even taught each other some of their respective techniques, and trained together. They also Worked on some other projects together before Bruce died (green Hornet being one of them if I’m not mistaken)and at the end of the day they respected each other deeply.
I heard similar stories . I worked with some friends of mine in the Bay Area on a construction site. They had driven up from LA and one of them was a grip in Hollywood. He didn't say anything about Bruce Lee but he did mention that Jean Claude Van Dam was more of a dancer than a fighter. That was in the nineties. They drove up in a fire engine red sixties era Cadillac convertible with a giant set of steer horns mounted on the front. He said most actors were sort of spoiled brats.
I used to watch Gene Lobell on Black&White T.V. as a wrestler, back in the early 60's. Freddy Blassie, Kenji Shibuya, John Tolahs. Freddie would bite his opponents. Kenji would throw salt in their faces....lol.
Lee historian John Little, who had access to all of Bruce's written material and organized them for the Bruce Lee Library series, has debunked LeBell's claims. The friendly encounter to deal with Lee's injuring of the stuntmen never happened, since he came on mid-season and the stunt issues were resolved by the first episode between Bruce and the fight director, Bennie Dobbins, who became a good friend and appeared in sparring photos with him. As for Gene becoming a friend and teaching Bruce grappling, well, in all of the diaries and day planners and notes and letters he's gone through, Little has NEVER seen a single mention of Gene. NONE. And none of Bruce's students recall seeing him or hearing Bruce mention him. Plus, his description of the school as having tatami mats and smelling of incense is just plain wrong; there were bare concrete floors and zero incense. What it boils down to is LeBell was a pro-wrestler at heart who loved to tell tall tales and put his character over. Nothing wrong with that as long as you know to take what he said with, as you said, a big grain of salt.
I agree. Once he took the glasses off, the spell was broken, he just didn't have the eyes. And all the standard Bruce Lee noises at the inappropriate time were just contrived.
issam Baci but my bunghole hurts so why would you not tell me that. Forgive you’re hypocrisy, no thanks. I don’t blame you, though. Moreover, Ben Affleck is a cell eater🤫🤫🤫🤫
This is actually a reversed parody of a real incident that occurred on the set of “enter the dragon”, where bruce lee supposedly stood up to a stuntman. But in the real story the stuntman was the loud-mouth, and bruce lee was brad pitt. This movie essentially reversed the roles. Edit: I realize there were multiple incidents which this could be based on, the most probable one being with Gene Lebell. I was referring to a different incident I had heard of where Bruce supposedly got frustrated with an actor that was not cooperating on set and put him in place.

Such an underwhelming line... It's a joke for sure but far from the best in the series. So to reiterate what the other comments said, what is wrong with you?

That is very true. I think the claims about him being a fake fighter are 100% true but he was definately not this argumentative. Back then everyone who knew Bruce Lee and worked with him, said Bruce was a great and wonderful guy. Once upon a time in Hollywood is a movie about what happens in another universe.
It is taken out of context but he did work with gene labelle legendary stuntman/ judo badass who Bruce lee highly respected and later became a student of to learn grappling from and vice versa gene went to learn from Bruce. This is the only thing we know gene labelle worked on green hornet as well. And we know what gene labelle did to Steven seagal years later so if bruce acted up there's no doubt in my mind gene would of muddied the waters.
According to LeBell, Lee was a working stiff on the set of The Green Hornet but was kicking the shit out of the stuntmen. They couldn’t convince him that he could go easy and it would still look great on film. The show’s stunt coordinator, Bennie Dobbins, needed a ringer to deal with Lee, so he called in Judo Gene. LeBell says when he got to the set, Dobbins told him to put Lee “in a headlock or something.” So LeBell went up and grabbed Lee. “He started making all those noises that he became famous for,” LeBell said, “but he didn’t try to counter me, so I think he was more surprised than anything else.” Then LeBell lifted Lee onto his back in what’s called a fireman’s carry and ran around the set with him. “Put me down or I’ll kill you!” Lee screamed. “I can’t put you down or you’ll kill me,” LeBell said, holding Lee there as long as he dared before putting him down, saying, “Hey, Bruce, don’t kill me. Just kidding, champ.” Back on his feet again, Lee didn’t kill LeBell. Instead, Lee recognized that the lack of grappling was a deficiency in the Jeet Kune Do style of martial arts he was developing. So Lee trained with LeBell for a little over a year with LeBell showing Lee armbars, leg locks and takedowns, and Lee schooling LeBell in kung fu kicks. After training with LeBell, Lee incorporated grappling moves into his film fighting. He finishes off Chuck Norris with a chokehold in Way of the Dragon (1972) and beats a young Sammo Hung with an armbar in Enter the Dragon (1973).
@Tavarahissi agreed. And like the technique he uses to..sort of rolls his arm from the elnow to the hand to help support the legs get up in one motion. Pretty cool.

Same here, and Tarantino gave an explanation but watching it again after hearing him really makes it look like Bruce was made out to be an a_ _ hole and a mediocre martial artist... maybe he was both but over the years the portrayal has been different.
It’s funny. I remember reading a book about Bruce Lee in high school. The one thing I specifically remember from that book was him talking about his extreme admiration for Cassius Clay and saying-when asked-that he’d have no chance against Clay in a real fight because of the size disadvantage. That’s the one specific thing I remember from the book 20 years later 🤣
Even Mike Tyson(one of the greatest and most renowned boxers of all time) himself said that Ali would beat him in a boxing match, that he was the greatest of all time, and "Every head must bow and every tongue must confess." Sooooooo....
For the record: multiple people who have worked with Bruce Lee, strongly disagree with the portrayal here. Bruce had a reputation for "not going easy" on stuntmen in fight scenes so it would look real, but he stopped this after someone dislocated their jaw. Also Lee himself said "look at this hand, it's a small Chinese hand. He'd kill me" when asked if he could beat Ali.

@Joe Dick Seriously? Every movie he releases has some BS controversy going on. Inglorious Basterds had some people whining around, because he supposedly ''made fun out of WWII, the Holocaust etc.'' Django Unchained, had Spike Lee getting his panties in a bunch, because they used the ''N''-word in a movie that took place during the old South/slavery-period. Pretty much every other of his movies,is accused of ''glorifying violence & being sexist'' bla bla bla... In reality, he's a hack, who can only rip-off older, better movies. ''Reservoir Dogs'' has main plotline & entire scenes,ripped-off from Ringo Lam's ''City on Fire'', just to name one example. So, for this movie, he couldn't piss off the black community anymore (not in the current politically correct climate), so he he decided to piss off the Asians and turn Bruce Lee into a bad SNL skit.
@Joe Dick he said in an interview that he personally knew Bruce Lee was arrogant and he said things that wouldn’t mean much like he could beat up Mohammad Ali and stuff. Tarantino made it clear that he is not all what he says he is. But this scene doesn’t say much since he created a character that could beat up Lee. So, whatever Bruce says before that.. all those things he brags that he is great about is just bragging that he often does as per Tarantino.
I know it was supposed to be a parody, but that's just an outright inaccurate representation of Bruce's personality and demeanor. I can see why people hate this bs.
The thing I have always liked about this scene and I hope people caught, is that him being able to fight Bruce Lee and hold his own giving a run for his money makes it much more believable in the ending when you see him physically dismantle 3 maniacs.
I honestly think that’s the entire point of this scene. When he’s kicking the shit out of the Mansons in the back of your mind you’re like “well, of course, this guy held his own against Bruce Lee.”
Tarantino is a master director so he knew he needed a scene that proved that Cliff was a true bad ass who could take on the Manson family and take them out --- what better way than fighting and embarrassing the toughest guy in early 70's cinema like Bruce Lee?
That hippie trailer park scene scarred the fuck out of me. Anyone other man would have been gone immediately and called for help. But Cliff actually stayed and kept looking around. That could only have been done by a badass
From what I understand Jay Sebring who was there was trained by Bruce Lee. I know that being trained by someone is not the same as being able to kick their butt. I watched the movie often, I have it DVR'd. I believe they had already made the point that he was tough. Of course they could have done other scene with somebody else. In the scene , the well trained dog helped considerably. One thing you have to suspend belief on is that they would have even gone to Dalton's house to find a way around to Sharon's rather than just hopping the gate which is what they really did.

I think what a lot of people miss about this scene is that it's not supposed to be an accurate portrayal of Bruce Lee. Per the title of the movie, this is a deliberate parody of how *Hollywood saw* Bruce Lee. The other thing to keep in mind is that Cliff Booth is a fictional character (that Brad Pitt plays him does make it harder to remember this) and therefore can be as skilled a fighter as Tarantino chooses. Disregarding the movies, Bruce Lee's fight philosophy in real life focuses on minimal movement and risk, but maximum return, so this is a misrepresentation of the real Bruce.
It actually isn't Bruce's philosophy. It is a longstanding set of principles within the internal aspects of the Wu-Tong that has existed for thousands of years. Interestingly, Bruce's fighting style was all external methods and for the most part devoid of the real and profound internal principles of the Wu-Tong. A contradiction to be sure. He was an actor and a martial arts stylist, but not a fighter.
I just watched enter the dragon. The fist scene where his martial arts master was quizing him on fighting. All of his answers were basically about how he uses the least amount of movement and the opponent isn't really there.
He was supposedly very disrespectful to stunt people. He would tag them all the time even though scenes didn't call for it. Eventually he learned to respect them though.
He’s talking about a stunt coordinator who worked with Bruce. Yes, Bruce used to tag the stunt men but it wasn’t due to a lack of professionalism, that’s how they worked in Hong Kong. It’s a tale of 2 different cultures. In America, actors are pansies, they never do their own stunts. In Hong Kong, everyone did their own stunts back in the 60’s. Look at some of the stunts Michelle Yeoh did back in the day. The scene where she’s swinging off the side of a bus. That wasn’t even supposed to happen like that, she could have gotten seriously hurt, but that’s how they worked back then. Also look at Jackie Chan, he’s gotten seriously hurt with many of his stunts.
Why does no one remember that this is Cliff's recollection of Bruce. Why does no one remember Sharon's recollection of Bruce, which portrays him as a humble teacher?
Exactly. Everyone is complaining about how they portrayed Bruce lee as if they were best friends with him and no one is noticing the amazing cinematography going on here
The cinematography is indeed great - but even though this looks like one 4-minute shot, I suspect it may not have been in reality. It's fairly easy to stitch shots together now and make it look seamless. The new Sam Mendes movie, 1917, is two hours long but meant to look like a single shot all the way through. In this scene, there's a fairly quick camera pan at 2:33 - that looks like a stylistic choice, but it's also a popular way of disguising digital splices (also seen in other movies that boast 'long' takes, like Children of Men and Suicide Blonde). I'm not saying this wasn't all a single take - just that it may not have been.
A lot of people are really upset that Bruce Lee got his ass kicked in this scene, but remember, Brad Pitt's charactor is imagining the whole fight while repairing an antenna.

One key thing to remember about this scene:
This is Cliff’s recollection of events after remembering what Rick told him about the gaffer for Lancer being the same guy who did it for Green Hornet.
@@randalwung8715 John Little can't do damage to Lee's name either, the Lebell story wasn't just told by Lebell thus how it ended up in this movie.

@@robsmith6650 yeah totally bro!
LeBell says when he got to the set, Dobbins told him to put Lee “in a headlock or something.”
So LeBell went up and grabbed Lee. “He started making all those noises that he became famous for,” LeBell said, “but he didn’t try to counter me, so I think he was more surprised than anything else.”
Then LeBell lifted Lee onto his back in what’s called a fireman’s carry and ran around the set with him.
“Put me down or I’ll kill you!” Lee screamed.
“I can’t put you down or you’ll kill me,” LeBell said, holding Lee there as long as he dared before putting him down, saying, “Hey, Bruce, don’t kill me. Just kidding, champ.”
Back on his feet again, Lee didn’t kill LeBell.

Let's be honest, Tarantino WANTED people to be angry about this scene
its called Once Upon a time in Hollywood. its not real
Tarantino's entire ''business model'' as a director is: ripping off older, better movies and creating some BS controversy in the media.
@Joe Dick Seriously? Every movie he releases has some BS controversy going on. Inglorious Basterds had some people whining around, because he supposedly ''made fun out of WWII, the Holocaust etc.''
Django Unchained, had Spike Lee getting his panties in a bunch, because they used the ''N''-word in a movie that took place during the old South/slavery-period.
@Joe Dick it’s clear Tarantino likes to pull legs. Common you don’t need to research about it.. it’s just common sense. That’s what makes him so cool
When both men looked concerned at the woman's freak-out over her car, I bursted into laughter on first watch! 😆🤣

I honestly think that’s the entire point of this scene.
When he’s kicking the shit out of the Mansons in the back of your mind you’re like “well, of course, this guy held his own against Bruce Lee.”
yeah they had to set it up
Tarantino is a master director so he knew he needed a scene that proved that Cliff was a true bad ass who could take on the Manson family and take them out --- what better way than fighting and embarrassing the toughest guy in early 70's cinema like Bruce Lee?

@@gerjaison That's because you need to have a degree in Cardiology to be become a Cardiologist, not a heart attack. If Bruce Lee is a fighting icon then where are his fights? It's like saying Mike Tyson got recognized as a fighter
from his movies and and sparring videos, not from his ACTUAL fights. Bruce Lee, for me, is no other than a stuntman/actor/exhibitionist, not a fighter. Sry for bad eng.
@Terrell Bone there are literaly videos of him fighting and he is the founder of jeet kune doo
Tarantino himself stated that while he didn't believe real-life Brue Lee would lose to Brad Pitt, Hollywood Lee *could* lose to Cliff Booth.
Exactly, just like Inglorious Bastards where they kill Hitler and most of the higher ups, it’s not real. We all know by now that Tarantino movies always do the opposite of what it was really like, Including the way Bruce is portrayed here.
I lived back in the day and trained in California. This is an accurate depiction of Bruce Lee. He didn't become a good guy or a "fighter" until after his death. Sorry guys
