I can never understand why Big Wreck aren't global superstars, they have everything you could ever ask for in a rock band, they play tightly as a unit, they have some really catchy tunes, and they have a phenomenal vocalist in Ian Thornley.
I have watched this video at least six times, gets better every time. These guys are extremely good performers, not just good players. Come Again is a prime example of using group dynamics to achieve a strong performance. The way it builds during the solo, then they dial it back for the last verse and chorus, and those percussive triplets! Seen them live twice now, and would go again in a heartbeat. I never thought that fat sound they have would come across live, but man, it does.
I still say it's a crime that these guys aren't more recognized as one of the greatest in the game of Rock and Ian Thornley as one of the greatest guitarists/singers/songwriters of all time. Chills every time I hear their stuff. That last solo is freakin' mind blowing.
What you are saying is totally true. The problem is that the songs are way too good for radio. The general population can't wrap their minds around this. It's too intricate and requires an attention span that most people do not have these days. So instead, we have crappy formulaic four chord pop songs that are a flash in the pan. Big Wreck will eventually get their accolades, but it will take time (forever) because they are going about it honestly. Thank you Big Wreck for all that you do!
Can you imagine being able to write songs like this, then being able to sing like this, then being able to play guitar like this. I would feel like a God if I could do one of these things as well as Ian Thornley. WOW!
Awesome band! My brother opened up for them several times as Rikers, love Ian Thornley, took a pic out back of their trailer, him and my sister together, seen them many times, keep rocking! Cheers
i've always said if you punched that solo from overemphasizing and slipped it into Pink Floyd's Hey You, the uber popular David Gilmour would have this ranked as one of his greatest and it would be in all the magazines of one of the greatest solos of all time. Instead, because it was created and performed by the criminally under recognized Ian Thornley, it's not even known by anybody but fans of his.
This guy. Ian Thornley. This guy… there are few around like him. I was privileged to have seen Big Wreck play this past Saturday, Ian about 15-feet from me the entire time. Won’t ever forget it or them. Can’t wait for the next opportunity. It can’t come soon enough. Bless them all and keep ‘em safe and playing into the distant future. For all of us.
Let's take a moment to recognize the absolutely moody and precise rhythm guitar work from Paulo and Brian under the blistering solo.... These guys are incredible
My first exposure to Big Wreck was the Ian Thornley interview at Anderton's. I watched it because the title was "A Must Watch For Guitar Fans". The Captain at the end said something like, "do yourself a favor and listen to 'Ghosts'". I queued it up on youtube and halfway through "I Digress" ordered the record from Amazon on CD. While listening to the rest of the "Ghosts" LP I hit the interwebs for some reviews of the album; I read a bunch of 5-star reviews before I got to one that was maybe 3-out-of-5 stars. The guy who gave it 3 stars said, "It's a great Big Wreck record, but it's not as good as 'Albatross'" - so I ordered "Albatross" too! These are now two of my favorite albums. So much musicianship in the performances, creativity in the production, and expertise in the engineering. Hell, the sound of the mutipasses on the master alone is worth the price of the record - both records are master classes in every aspect of recording. Listening to Big Wreck is like listening to The Beatles - you're always discovering another layer, another texture, another subtlety.
I first heard of Big Wreck after I heard the first Thornley album. That was on repeat as long as I can remember. I look up when the next album would come out and found out about Big Wreck. I now own all of their records. Its the only I have been listening to for quite some time. Albatross and Ghosts are my favorites though in the Big Wreck genre. Jason, you need to check out Thornley.
Overemphasizing with the latest lineup was gold enough...but the solo at the end of Come Again? Come ON!!!! If the world hasn't figured out this band is the shit then there is no hope. :P GO BIG WRECK!!!
Everytime I listen to 'overemphasizing' I feel my blood boil :-) it's amazing.. I love the guitar solo in this because it seems to me a kind of soul scream... it's my favourite song!
Overemphasizing!!! Ironic how no one ever over emphasized on that masterpiece!! Thanks to big wreck for all these wonderfull years of pure emotional songs!!
Love how these guys do all these intimate sessions. And honestly I wasn't a huge fan of Dunlop as a brand but this kind of content has my attention for sure.
@@cameronreyno7175 Yep, this must've been BW's first ever national tour and DT had Sherinian in the band. From what I remember, they did not go down too well with the DT audience - at least not the gig I saw - who would've preferred a widdly-diddly prog opening act.
which has always seemed insane to be because the guys who want the crazy prog stuff would LOVE Big Wreck if they really listened to the songs. They have an uncanny ability to make the very complicated sound simple.
Wtf. I had no idea how talented Thornley is. I used to hear come again and so far so good on the radio and they were singles that came and went. But this guy is a legit musician

Lately, I've been reflecting on the recent death of Neil Peart and my lifetime history with Rush. Having been born in '68, Rush has been a part of my life for their entire career, and I've been planning a podcast series discussing the morals and values I've learned from Neil's songs. As I've been analyzing Rush's music in preparation for that, I've come to the conclusion that Neil, Geddy, and Alex were creating a sonic platform for Neil's lyrics, telling stories not only with words, but with sound, which I believe is why Rush doesn't engage in any of the self-indulgent soloing typical of other bands. Each player plays a role in the sound, and Neil's drumming isn't just rhythmic, but also has it's own melody. Combine that with Alex and Geddy frequently playing their own different melodies, and you get the one thing people think about Rush: How do three guys sound like six? So, what does this have to do with Big Wreck? Having listened to all Big Wreck albums many, many, MANY times over, I hear the same kind of cooperative sonic canvas as Rush, minus the drums of course, but with BW's own unique sound. Sure, Ian does solo and lot, but so does Paolo, as did Brian. The Ghosts album is an excellent example of this kind of arrangement. Take the Skybunk Marche track in here from the fantastic post Ian solo project BW album, Grace Street where Ian is using minors for that pulsing interference; the wrong note in the right place. I'm not a trained musician, so I don't always have the right words to describe things, but I hope you get what I mean. While Rush and Big Wreck both have their own distinct sound and style, I believe they are employing the same methodology of trust in the other band members to build a complete sound that is deep and visceral and satisfying. I love that very, very much. I would like to close this long comment out with a nod to Brian Doherty and his death. I hear the loss on the new BW album, not only in the sound, but also the tone, tenor, and lyrical content. I can hear and feel Ian's pain over the loss of his long-time friend. Thank you for sharing that with us, Big Wreck. For those of us who know, I believe we all feel for you.
Tyler Knows Nothing, I came to know about Ian Thornley / BW via that Andertons vid; I’m so glad I did. I was never a huge Rush fan but worked with a drummer who was, so we hung out and listened for hours and my initial thought was, “Three guys?!”. You’re absolutely right about the collaborative sonic palette and, for me, it perfectly sums up the description of the depth, colours and the distinctly ‘way-more-than-the-sum-of-it’s-parts’ feel that I get from Ian’s/BW’s output. Such sadness that Brian passed too but his musical input (at least) is there for us to remember. I was born in ‘68 too and my go-to guitarist during those formative years was Gary Moore, at a time when rock and guitars in general, were becoming considered passé and uncool. I had excitement for each latest album release after buying Corridors of Power and Victims of the Future and at the time, was genuinely disappointed that he had chosen to express his musicality in the blues genre (although I forgave him later!). I have listened to various guitarists and there are some absolutely ultra-level players out there etc but Ian’s songwriting, musical prowess and ability to ‘relate’ really has made him my new go-to!
Just hearing this band for the first time in this video, I'm digging them! Also just wanna say, really nice production with these Dunlop Sessions, good work!
If I'm honest, I checked out some of their other stuff and I didn't like it as much as this video, they get quite pop, which is cool, just not my thing. I prefer the lead guy doing his solo thing, he's kind of a similar style player to myself, so I'm bound to like it!
Just so you all know. Ian Thornley was Slash's First choice for the Velvet Revolver singer position over Scott Weiland. But Slash didn't want Ian playing guitar in the band as that was his thing. Ian would never play in a band where he couldn't play his guitar so he said no to Slash.

"Overemphasizing" reminds me so much of Porcupine Trees "Anesthetize". Big Wreck has got to be the greatest band nobody knows about. Just WOW!
Ian is one of the most talented individuals in modern music. Hands down.

The slide solo in Overemphasizing is absolutely jaw dropping. So clean man.

Yep. Most talented songwriter and guitarist currently alive on earth. If that's even where we live anyway.
And with all this talent, he’s also pretty humble
Awesome band! My brother opened up for them several times as Rikers, love Ian Thornley, took a pic out back of their trailer, him and my sister together, seen them many times, keep rocking! Cheers
That has to be one of the top 3 slide guitar solos of all history, that tone is INSANE!!!!
Watch "Under the Lighthouse" Live from Suhr Factory 2016. Ian is awesome
yes. Just wow.

the tone of Ian's guitar in Skybunk. Jesus. A master who deserves far more recognition.

overemphasizing brings me back to being a teen. I never knew anyone who was into big wreck, but they made an impact on me for sure. So much feels.
Come meet some people into Big Wreck!

Wow... i thought that for slide guitar Johnny Winter and Derek Trucks were THE MEN... and they are ! But so is Ian !
one of those times where there is not a single "dislike" !
10 angry thumbs did it to spite you.
The solo on Overemphasizing puts goose bumps on me still today.
Ian is an extremely humble & a great guitar player - songwriter !...
