- How do you carve your own path as a bass player?
In this first-time collaboration, music icons and Dunlop Bass Strings artists Marcus Miller and Robert Trujillo get together to talk about how they came to be who they are as musicians. Discover the influences they share and how they’ve used the pivotal lessons they've learned to establish their own unique “voices” as bass players. After that, Marcus and Robert ditch the stools for a killer jam session featuring Rage Against the Machine’s Brad Wilk on drums.

Make an album and take my money!!!
Totally agree.
I'd spend the food budget for the month to experience them on stage together like that
Take mine too!!! I love this!!!
I think what's incredible is the song is literally the conversation they had with eachother. That's music it's just a conversation about your influences :)
well said!
Well said!
Yess...Agreed 😎👊💯
Well seen
Robs Ozzy impression was spot on 😂
His Bob Daisley impression was sadly lacking. He should be never let to forget his part in that sad saga.
Lol.. It Sure Was Wasn't It.... WOW !!!
Please please please make sure Roberto and Marcus make an album together! This is awesome!!!
Yeah, Robert can draw the album cover.
Always happy to see Rob do actual cool and refreshing stuff outside Metallica.
Thing is he doesn't fit at all in Metallica
Yes - we need a return to stuff like Infectious Grooves and Suicidal Tendencies days from him....
Always liked suicidal tendencies and infectious grooves, wasn't sure about him in Metallica, but he obviously can do anything!
@@elmud he is too good for that shitty band!
I totally agree. newsted was the perfect fit for metallica. Shame they F’d that up.
I'm a 54 years old Hybrid .Black mother White Dad....Metal fan since 11 years old. i Discovered Miles and John at 19 years old and became immediatly die hard fan of Jazz Music. I'm a Mixing and Mastering engineer now . What i see is love and huge sensibilities, Music is love ! Such a great moment for me to hear and see these 2 Giant musicans i love. I still play Seek & destroy , for whom the bell tolls... So what ,All Blues.... God bless you guys ! Bests regards from FRANCE.💥💙🤍❤
2 killer bassists plus Brad Wilk on drums. 🔥🔥🔥
The mixture of both of these guys is something I didn't know I needed!
No Ego involved just two Professionals having a great chat
No, lots of ego. But respect for and interest in the other.
This is one of the best, if not THE BEST, promo videos I've ever seen featuring two BASS GIANTS and two of the coolest dudes on the planet!!! This video does a fantastic job of paying tribute to the bass as an instrument and some of the most influential bassists in history! Killer close-out song by killer musicians!!!
a 1000% agree, what a great vid..
Two cats whose respective discographies are amazing in their own way. Listening to them chat about bass, and bass lines is such inspiration
How crazy is that now? I started playing bass in 1992 because of these two heroes. I saw Robert live with Suicidal in Munich in 1992 and a week later I had a bass. I was 15 and thought that something incredible had been revealed to me.
I'd love to have a Brad Wilk ready at all times to jam out grooves.
The song at the end makes me want to listen to the whole album.
Robert Trujillo... the man who made me start rocking with bass !! Heaviest funky bass legend🔥
I never thought I'd ever see these two together. Legends in the bass game. God bless them both.
Couldn’t be more different and more alike simultaneously. Refreshing to see.
Man brother Marcus is really the GOAT. Him explaining Jamerson and absolutely killing every bass line is amazing.
robert trujillo just have the generic rockband bass sound... everybody can be robert trujillo..... but when you listen marcus miller.... you can recognize that slap and finger tone from miles away
listening to their conversation was such a pleasure
I played guitar into my 40s, never in a band....then I discovered BASS! ....My eyes opened and I heard bass in every song heard there after! And Both my favorite bass players in one video! Thank you! Amazing video.🤘🏻
I did the same thing! Played guitar since my teens but picked up bass in my 40s and now my favourite instrument is my P Bass!
You described my story exactly! Played guitar my whole life, then in my 40s a friend of mine found a (basically brand new) 4 string at the curb on garbage day and gave it to me. I couldn't put it down!
Hindsight is 20/20🤘🏻
That's kinda my story too. Learned classical und folk guitar as a child, then switched to electric guitar as a teen and played in a band a couple of years. Then life happened, university, marriage, kids and there wasn't a lot of time for the guitar which was okay.
Then I was asked to join a band with multiple singers and maybe play guitar. But there was a really great guitarist from the US, we really didn't need me on guitar. But singing kinda wasn't enough so I thought, maybe try bass guitar. I bought a cheap but good bass and I completely switched my role as a musician and fell in love with the bass. So I kept on going and found my dream bass.
Now I identify as a bassist who happens to also plays guitar sometimes. 😁
I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I read the title. How cool is this?! What a great time to be alive!
Much love to Brad Wilk killing it on the kit again! 🔥. Such an incredible song by all musicians.
I don't see 2 bass players. I see 2 amazing musicians.
what's wrong with the bass?
Well i see 3 ... Brad is a beast
@@mikarage3677 I see 2. Marcus and Brad.
Then clearly you know nothing about Robert.
Met Rob once when I was working at a studio. Was just a quick conversation in the hallway but he was super nice.
Sometimes people tend to forget that Rob is one hell of a funk player. The first time I heard Infectious Grooves it really floored me. When he joined Metallica it really took a while for me to process, but at the end, he proves to be a super versatile bass player ever.
Robert has always been way better of a bassist than Metallica deserves lol... I feel Robert is way above them. So was the original Cliff Burton. I really love Roberts funk punk aggressive style. What a badass... But I know he's getting that fat pay check from Metallica
Great meeting of two giants of this instrument.
2 different universes, 2 different backgrouds, but a lot of things in commun with great respect for each other.
Only open minded musicians can reach that level.
Marcus is like the Bach , Mozart of our century ... HBD ... and kudo to Trujillo for all his efforts to the community ... they're amazing personnels
Not enough of these two.... moooore 😁
Two generation of master bassplayers in their own way! Brutal..... 💥
They're similar in age, only a 5 year gap.
Great video, and not a single product ad until the last few seconds. Class
that was INSANE. The jam at the end was sick!
the End part is so AWESOME!!!
I could watch these two talk bass all day!
Couldn't have picked a better Drummer for this than Brad. He is just perfect. Amazingly groovy and a heavy drummer.
Great meeting. Two titans-- not just in bass, but also in personality.
Robert Trujillo what? & Marcus Miller! Bass players delight🙌
WOow! Never thought that this crossover was possible!!! unbelievable!
Ohh myy gaawwd this is so dope!!!! We need these guy's to make an album
This is a diamond for eternity. We want more!
The world needed this and they brought it! Classic!
Really nice Father's Day present to be "in the room" with musicians at the top of their games. Awesome!!
It's great to have this 2 great players together for this interview. Thanks.
I had know idea that Rob was so knowledgeable about music history. Two complete musicians "choppin up game" and jamming out. I loved this!
Thanks for bringing these two great people together!
Two iconic bass player
Man I could watch hours and hours of these two exchanging about their worlds 🙌🙌🙌
So good that it brought tears to my eyes -- that's real punk rock to me. Mad respect to each of these three fine musicians.
Love Marcus even more now that I see he drives a 991 Turbo. Great vid fellas we need more of this in our bass player lives
Yeah, we gonna need a full album!
I dont want this video to end...
Bright warm guys. Fascinating
Marcus is 64 damn! Carries more force with his persona then a random teen
Saw him in the early 2000's... Walked out 45 minutes late and didn't say a word; just started playing and all was right with the crowd. AMAZING concert!
These two guys together! Who would've thought?! Nice!
I am not a fan of Metallica and generally of the band Trujillo played with but I really respect him as a musician. He clearly loves music and has a deep knowledge of the roots of modern music. It is great to see that he is not "stuck" in his genre only. Kudos!
I was gonna comment the same sentiments myself but you’ve said it for me my friend. Thanks 👍
As a sound engineer, when I am listening to music my favorite artist tends to be Bass players. Stanley, of course Marcus are two of my favorites. Watching Robert and Marcus talking just tells you how important bass is. When I record or mix the Bass is what glues everything together. The foundation of music is the drums and bass. Loved this video!
What a beautiful idea for a video. 2 masters and great guys.
Marcus is the best music story teller, I love his Kind of Blue chequing on utube.
I totally love that bass jam at the end. Heavy metal bass vs Jass bass really worked out great. Those two should make an album together.
MORE PLEASE!!! Love the 4 string basses as well 🤘🏼
😮Whoa‼️I enjoyed this SOOOOO MUCH! Thanks all at JimDunlopUSA! Thanks Robert & Marcus & Brad! Thank you Thank you Thank you‼️ 24:58 AWESOME!!!! Gonna RRRRROCK that in my car!!!!!!!
Most important takeaway was knowing what to play for the song. I love hearing any musician say they were thinking of how to fit in with what others were doing in the song. Those are the best musicians!
We need more of this: artists from different genres coming together
For years my two favorite bassplayers playing together... Love it!!!
This is level of bass at best from two great players with value education for us players to learn and grow
That was the best 28 minutes Ive spent in a long time, two of the very best together shooting the breeze and jamin like demons, Stunning !!
What a beautiful match up, two of my biggest inspirations though my bass journey!
Fantastic interview. 2. Of my influences. 2 cool dudes!!!!
We need more of these get togethers!!!
the best trio in the whole world, keep on rippin please
what a great way to start this day. About playing with a pick, one of my idols about grooving with a pick is Bobby Vega, that's where I learned how much i can do with a pick
It is a very good collaboration to show that there is no bonderies in music
What is this wonderfulness that I've stumbled upon?!?! 😮
WOW WHAT AN AMAZING MEETING. MR. MILLER AND MR. TRUJILLO TRUE MASTERS
I like Robert at the end, "Did we do it??! Yeah!!!
Absolutely awesome. Those cats are just strait up ART.
Two Great Musical Legends.. And Amazing Stoies 😎👊💯💯
..Total Badass Bass Brothas Without Question ☺☺👊😎💯💯
3 absolute Monsters! Marcus's melody on that track reminds me of Edwin Collins "Girl Like You". Tremendous
Two of my heroes
thank you dunlop for this!!! great bassists of our generation...
Anthony Jackson really nails that James Jamerson feel. He's my favorite Bass Guitarist 👌🏿👌🏿
Thank you so much for talking about AJ. 👊🏿🖤
Marcus Miller influenced me way earlier than AJ coz I grew up listening to Music he played on for Luther and many Artistes. He's an incredible guy. Been trying to get him over here for a while now.
I first heard about Trujillo on the Jaco documentary he did. Incredible work.
They need to do one with Anthony Jackson while he's still with us.
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
Man, they they're both badass bass players!
I love it when 2 musicians talk about music and their passion for it. It doesn't matter what background they have. I listened to both of them, and though they sound very different, when it comes down to it, they have the same roots. Just different ways to express them, if that makes sense. 🤘
I like when John Paul Jones gets his love. Jonesy rules!
Amazing World master class collaboration
Amazing to have Rob with the Goat Marcus !
Incredible musical talents. Icon of the craft and instrument.. you got to love bass.
It's great to see MM rock! Man, RT and BW ought to start a band...
Blimey. Loved the music. Brilliant cut!! Original. Make an LP PLEASE
Such a great combo! The versatility is unreal!
JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!! we need more musicians crossovers to show that music is not a competition and that you really don't need to pick sides, both the talk and the jam so freaking inspiring, thanks for making this happen!
Absolutely LOVE it ,their tone is a killer !!
Wow. Such a great converstaion and jam.
How tf does Marcus look so young though. For real he looks 20 years younger than his actual age. Bright energy.
Truth
It kind of reminds me of Adrian Belew. He's 74 (and certainly looks it), but he has this infectious joy and energy to his performances. He comes out from behind the stage running and jumping over cables and whatever else, and I don't think he stops smiling even for 1/2 a second during his performances. He says he doesn't feel older than 35. He's been doing what he loves for so long that it's kept him young.
Younger than Robert for sure 😂
Black don’t crack
Black don't crack man
Doggos acting is top notch. I was genuinely scared but the toothed burritos anger. ❤
What an excellent video to watch! Trujillo & Miller killing it for real🔥 so much knowledge and experienced to share. Wilk such a great drummer too!
goosebumps, goosebumps, goosebumps, watching again and again, amazing!!!!
My two favorite musicians together! This is impressive!!!
This was so cool and refreshing and to hear them jam at the end was mind blowing
Ooh Rob pulling out Violent n Funky's 🤩.
The sound that just flows out of these guys is insane.
WOW Jim thanks a bunch bro! Rob and Marcus made my day in this video! What great guys!!!!
Great, I would have loved to see duff, and Billy Sheehan with them.👍👍
