- Every drummer has a story about a snare drum. And within that story is a complex emotional relationship that is deeply felt but rarely discussed. SNARE is a four-part documentary series from Lauten Audio that brings those stories and the details that defined them to life. In reconnecting legendary drummers with the snare drums they chose to define the future of music, we explore the nuance, impact, and importance of the indisputable lifeblood of music, the snare drum.

This is so awesome! And, yes, the hihat rejection in UNREAL! My new favorite snare mic is SNARE MIC!
Thanks for being a part of it Jake. Can’t wait for your video!
@@LautenAudionow I can’t wait for his video 💪🏻🥁🤓
Dude! This is amazing. It's almost like the snare is recorded on a separate track in another room because the isolation is so darn good!
thanks Jake and Darrell for contributing to my debt :D ...... this Mic is FANTASTIC!!!!!!
Fellas what is the mic? Did I missed something? Is it th Lauten?
Always thought their first album was Tama Bell Brass. Cool to know it was actually a Pearl.
Us too! The secret is out.
I think Modern Drummer also said the snare on Rage's first record was a Bell Brass, which caused misinformation to spread
Brad doesn’t get enough love man! So much groove for one guy!!
He’s awesome
Although I do agree with you 100%. When I heard he was playing on Black Sabbath's final album in 2013. He got the official nod of approval.
Yeah I thought he was perfect. Very few heavy drummers could stand in for Bill Ward's feel and swing. Brad nailed it.@@itLEAKED
He's Lars Ulrich level.
Lars is horrible lol
Aw man, I play in an RATM tribute, this made my day - Brad & Tim C, baddest rhythm section in rock
When you know the song just by hearing the beat. RATM. Legends forever 🙌
I was playing complicated double bass and fills and chasing Dave Lombardo at the time until Rage came about. Brad's playing showed me another way to say a lot behind the drums without speaking as much. Just power. Not overplaying.
I was about to write the same thing 😊
I need to learn them. I'm slaying nitty scott and the polish embassador right now.
You go with the polish ambassador he is a f'n genius!
right? nothing but the beat and groove and insta "oh hell yeah..."
One of my favorite drummers.
All pocket just laid back groove.
Rage and audioslave
"Like A Stone" is my favourite Audioslave song for that very reason.
I wish he got more recognition, guy is probably my favorite drummer alive
Pearl still makes the full line of free floating snares.
And they're still AMAZING!!!
This is amazing! Rage and Audioslave recorded some of the greatest rock snare sounds of all time.
His playing on the last Black Sabbatrh album was outstanding!
especially in this song called god is dead
especially in this song called god is dead
I would LOVE to see something like this with John Otto and his 4x14 40 ply vented OCDP snare drum he used on Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish.
Going to check that one out now
Otto is so underrated. Shame about ocdp too
That was the rock sound of my youth.
@@LautenAudio you better get that man !
Damn, Brad just doubled the value of my vintage brass free-floater 😆, not that I’d ever sell it.
One of my favorite drummers! Brad is so underrated. Powerful, yet groovy, like a cross between Chad Smith and Dave Grohl.🤘
I agree, and with some Bonham mixed in as well...
Dave Grohl? C'mon man.
He’s an influence whether you like it or not.@@Buckseed
@@Buckseed its a influencie, you hear a groove of brad? or rythm of dave?
The amount of history that snare has is so sick
I'll never forget early summer of 1996. My brother had just bought Evil Empire. We put it in the cd player, turned up the volume and pressed play. People of the Sun, just 10 seconds in to the album when Brad starts playing that beat. We were both floored! Recorded drums had never sounded better before, so powerful, so groovy and punchy. Just lovely!
So... just like that... we were in the 606 FooFighters studio watching Brad W casually talking about snares, some that he and Ross Garfield used on RATM, Metallica, Nirvana, Off Springs, and countless historic records... ..just like that...
That is friggin' amazing !! Coolest content I've seen in a while.
Thanks for sharing this gem.
Brad makes EVERY song unique and it's own thing. All of them. Imo top 5 all time drummers. Not for speed or flamboyance. Just amazing clean, tight and never a duplicate grove.
Ok this is my big moment, i got the same brass snare, bought it in the 70’s and yep, still my ‘go to’ snare today 😊
for Rock Brad is up there with John Bonham, Bill Ward and Phil Rudd
The pearl free-floating snare drum sounds phenomenal! I didn’t know that’s what Brad used, I figured it was a Tama or Gretsch. For those of you who are lucky enough to have heard The Roots “Do you want more” album Questlove told me he used a 4” Pearl free-floating brass snare drum on the whole album. The Snare drum on that album is second to none and we all know Brad got a phenomenal sound on the RATM records as well. It’s a great drum!
Hmm, I am pretty sure it was a Yamaha SD 493.
And now begins my search for an 80s Tama Bellbrass
They just reissued it for $4k. OG's were going for $6/10k. Its actually a cast bronze shell, most of the companies have a cast bell bronze snare in their line.
Such an incredible and underrated drummer. This guy should get a lot more recognition.
Could you all try and get John stanier on Here......PLEASE! From Helmet, Tomahawk and Battle. Talking about great drummers from the 90s. He was my favorite, besides t. Alexander and fluff(mike bordin). It would be Killer If you could get john on there.
Okay this my favorite recorded example of that tama bell brass.
When they going over the hi hat rejection the mic was achieving, that was also just mind blowing!
That's our new mic, "Snare Mic" 😄
@@LautenAudio Ya, gonna have to get one of these for sure!
@@StereoAnthonyyep, bought one today!
So that brass Pearl snare was the actual one on the RATM album? Sick, if so. I know that they pulled in a 1980’s Bell Brass Tama in the video too. I wonder if that’s the same one used on Metallica’s Black Album, because the Drum Doctors were apart of this video, who own that actual snare from the Black Album.
Brad Wilk has got to have zero hearing left. For reals. They are absolute cannons. I am soooooooooo jealous
I haven't seen it in the comments yet, so maybe it missed that someone already said this, but ... yes, there is copper in the bell brass snare (as well as the Pearl free-floater), because brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, at a ratio of roughly 68% to 32% (the ratio changes depending on the use). Great video.
The Bell Brass is actually a sand casted bronze shell, that got lost in translation when Tama released that drum.
@@woutervanrenterghem570 You're correct. I learned that after my comment was posted. The fact that there's copper content still applies, but with bronze it's at a higher percentage.
Wow this guy is stiff as hell... but in the pocket and grooving.
And it spoke to me(pearl 6.5x14 brass free floating shell snare drum)yes! That was the same one that spoke to me. I tried several and as an afterthought I hit that one one time and bought it. God I miss that drum. Even more so because it was on clearance and I got it for half off. Today it will be over $300
I have the same 6.5 brass free floater. In Australia they are about $1000 AUD or about $666 USD lol. Mine looks brand new still from 96. Second hand and pitted like crazy ones from Japan are the same here. $700 USD. They are the loudest snare you will ever find.
The off-axis rejection is bananas! Definitely looking to grab one of these ASAP - bravo, @lautenAudio !
That Pearl wasn't just tuned right in the store... the Bell brass was left in the dirt after that IMHO. Dunno if it's cuz he played it for so long but Pearl freefloatings are extremely underrated - also save you money on the long run cuz you can buy the shells without the hardware!!!
Great snares, but that kick has so much thump to it. I've always loved how much punch he gets out of his kick playing. It's such a part of their sound.
OOhh i love that sounds... i always have a wood snare, and i always love the sound of metal snares, i´m from Argentina, and here it´s all so expensive, that cost a lot to afford a correctly snare drum.... but love that cutting sound of metal snares...
Is it even legal to play with this much groove ?
One of the most iconic albums of all time that still has relevance today!!!!
Absolutely love RATM!!!!!!!
I never really seen him play until now. Maybe quick quips in videos.
But he looks like it is hard for him. To play.
Feels like if you're not micing your drums with Lauten in 2023 you're officially behind the times haha. As soon as their version of the Beta91A drops it's game over for everyone else haha.
❤❤❤
I'm not a drummer, I'm a bassist. But from listening to music for my entire musical career its easy to recognize their songs just from brads excellent drumming. Truly an underrated master of his craft.
The White Pearls from Ludwig are absolutely awesome.
YES DUDE
I'm such a weeny for dope snares especially with back stories. I have a few of my own now and am so grateful for my tiny collection.
I love this snare. Got my first one with my Pearl CZX Studio kit I bought in 1993. That snare was eventually stolen. I found one about two years ago and bought it, and also bought another second generation brass free floater. I have a collection of about 8 or 10 free floaters in different sizes and shells. Love these drums!
OMG I had the brass free floating. Bought for £180 second hand. Everyone said it was too loud ❤. Loved it. When I stopped gigging the seller begged for it back 👌🏻
The Pearl FFS series was so awesome, still got my 6” steal, loud AF, always wanted the brass shell to swap out the steal
Nice Ludwig’s too ❤
Love Brad’s drumming and love that he’s playing the song from the heart.
IT's a Pearl on the first album? Wow!!!
Thank you so much for doing this. I have such an emotional response to his playing, it just hits you in the chest. He’s awesome. Just ordered the mic :-)
The plan is to do more of these videos, right?
There is something to be said of how a great drummer knows how to Trigger the room. Brad does this so well. Beast!!
Wow, interesting to see that he doesn't (?) hit rimshots. And that he sits so low. Classic sound and groove.
Evil empire is in my opinion the best RATM álbum, so underrated
THIS!!! They took a Great Leap Forward to that album from the first one. And, I’ve never liked the snare on the first album, except for “Bullet In The Head”, which was remixed straight from their superior demo. The disappointment about Wilk with RATM, for me, is that he/they rarely sounded as good live as in the studio.
Brad reminds me of Alex Van Halen in the way that he fills space in such an interesting way. It almost sounds like the groove’s gonna fall apart and it never does.
Loved this!
Pearl Brass Free-Floating!!! Had two of them (one in brass and one in maple shell configurations). Needless to say the new LAUTEN AUDIO mic sounds incredible. :) :) :)
We are so glad you like it!
It brings me great joy to know that one of my favorite snares was used on one of my favorite records.
Right off the bat - Killing in the Name! Awesome
❤🔥
His bass drum sounds the dopest of of all the drum sounds i heard here!
I ran into Brad at a party in 1997 and he was so awesome to talk to! I was just a nobody and he took the time to give me a lesson with a butter knife and a fork. After that, I felt like he opened up a new gear in my playing style. I also was lucky enough to have Ross pimp out a DW snare for me!! Makes me wana play drums again watching this
I've had my Pearl Freefloater since about 87. I bought it used, and though it's not the brass shell like Brad has... the steel shell that I have is also freakin' load and ringy. I think a lot of people got rid of them because they can be a bit of a bitch to tune properly. I dusted mine off a couple of years ago and went through it with a fine toothed comb. I actually really like it now.
The steal FFS sounds awesome, nice with a Evans G2 batter or double ply coated head
Brad has always been a top drummer of mine. Low key great along with john dolmayan. Brads work on sabbath 13 was awesome
Couldn't agree more!
That was great. I always thought the bell brass was on the first Rage record. Cool to know it was that Pearl free floater.
Me too! I think we all did.
I have a 14x6.5 DW Black Nickel Over Brass snare drum, and it’s killer awesome!!!!! I love the way it sounds!!!!! Plus, it’s more affordable than a Ludwig Black Beauty snare, so there you go. That’s my main snare drum and it sounds awesome!!! I never recorded with it, but when I do, I know it’ll sound killer!!!!!!!!
Pearl free floating snare sounds awesome.
If I'm not wrong, Jimmy Chamberlin used free floating on the first Smashing Pumpkins album.
You know how much Brad loves his snares because he’s hitting the crap out of them without ear protection.
I’ve still got my Pearl FFS steal snare and it’s LOUD
He has so distinctive patterns without coming to the fore but definitely carrying the song forward with the solid groove. just like Tim Commerford's bass.
would have been cooler to hear this mic'd up with a 57 on a piece of junk 8 track machine. tired of the Kirkland Signature drum sound of these types of studios
Loved Brad with rage. The sound engineer with grey hair is Ross Garfield if I'm not mistaken. Cool guy. He knows drums inside and out. Backwards and sideways. Lol. I almost worked for him some years ago.
I used to listen to 13 by Black Sabbath on a regular basis non-stop. RATM? Not really. So I personally, will always associate Brad with 13 by Black Sabbath.
This cat is a legend! Brad is So underrated in my opinion. RATM was such a pivotal band.
one of the greatest funk drummers ever imo
I don't like the word "underrated". I get a slight back-handed compliment vibe about it. I'm pretty sure his music has been listened to and enjoyed billions of times over the last 30+ years. I don't understand how this rating system works.
Tama bell brass. Killer snare. doesn’t have a lot of ring like most brass snares have.
If anyone in insteresting in the TAMA "bell brass" snare its actually a bronze shell. Bronze is an alloy consisting primarily of 78% copper, commonly with about 12% tin. (so yes Brad there is plenty of copper in it) what there isn't any of is brass. I still don't know why Tama called it bell brass when its bell bronze.
Air drumming RATM, you tilt your head when you hit the snare! When I was a kid that was the definition of being cool. Music video on Freedom. The drummer back facing live performance. It might be gimmicky like Jimi Hendrix playing with his teeth. But it is cool af. Listening now with only drums you can hear which song it is.
Great video !! is it me or that Tama snare once retired needs to be sent to the Rock'n'Roll hall of fame.
It will be one day! It's got to be one of the most historically valuable drums out there!
Prefer the bell brass snare drum. It would be interesting to hear the snare drums tuned a hair lower. Black Beauty sounds nice but the Ludaloy Supraphonic has just the right amount of attack & decay IMO. However, the Bass Drum sound was the BEST thing you recorded in this video 👍
I heard why go home in very first beat!Love me some brad.
Cheers
What's the song he's playing at 09:33. Sounds very similar to 'Wind Below' from Evil Empire but it's not that exactly. I suspect it's a Sabbath or Zeppelin song that he used for inspiration...
love his playing.. but boy would I like to make him use less muscle tensioning when playing.. he would be able to play even more powerful. But hey.. what do I know. Have 4 FF snares.. love em... they do provide something special. Use the FF setup to test my own shells (I build custom drums). BUT the FF system does not "not dampen" the shell.. mostly because it uses felt between the lower part of the shell and the bottom part of the FF system.. you can take it off.. IF the shell is 100% level it is OK and you WILL get more shell sound.
Free… free floating… I remember those things well they lasted well into the 2000s. I just can’t stand Pearl. I can’t believe they have a tama one. The Ludwig vistalite is my fav. Cut of metal but the cough of wood.
Still remember the night some CLAN band split up and rage played all night instead! KANSAS CITY!
Great video!!! However, he said several times that he used a Tama Bell Brass to record the first album... I don't understand!🤔...
i have the same pearl free floating brass snare. love it
This was my first new snare, well a 5.5 maple free floating and still love it to this day but what gets me is someone was just selling a brass 6.5 a couple weeks ago local on marketplace for 450 and I missed it!! Dammmit
As a Pearl guy I was shocked he used the free floater ion the first album. Always heard it was the Bell Brass.
Black Sab 100%. We're same type. I adapted heaps earlier 90s. Love you all as musos.
Great idea for a series! Three distinct snares there… proud owner of a free floater but dammit.. I really didn’t want to be compelled to get a Black beauty in my life and yet here we are.
Insane sound! I am watching this in my home studio and I got goose bumps with this drum sounds.
Can someone please help me identify what series his two paiste crash cymbals are from? I think they are from the 2002 range but I'm not sure.
Does anyone here know if these mics are fully built in the US or just assembled from overseas parts?
6:26 of course Brad, in brass there is ALWAYS copper ;) Not only in the bell brass.
Im fucking in love with this series you guys are doing!! and recorded to tape!! killer.. Ugh any multitracks?? man do I wish there were, just to practice mixing a bit, just like the other video
We have multitracks for the 1st episode of DRUMS, but can't release the ones from these sessions. They are really good too.
The opening sounds like "Go" by Pearl Jam.
I thought the intro was a fast version of "Even Flow" with Pearl Jam until i realize it was "Killing in the name of"
Absolutely genius name for the new microphone! It's sounding good too!!
What a great video, thank you so much for this! I love Brad‘s playing so much! Great drum sounds as well.
Anyone actually used one of these mics (ls408) I can’t find any reviews etc…
Beautiful Ludwig’s. The colour mine are.
Maybe there is copper in this bell brass...
Bruh, brass is a bunch of copper and some zinc...
There is most certainly copper in that Tama Bell Brass shell, Mr. Wilk. While i believe the name Bell Brass is actually a misnomer, since bells are more commonly made from bronze rather than brass, in either case the principle metal for both brass and bronze is copper. The difference between brass and bronze is in the other metals that are added to the copper in the smelting process.
What cymbals are those?? They sound light but he seems o to use heavy paiste (from what I see online)
Do an episode with John Dolmayan! (SOAD)
loving that some of the lugs on the BB has been replaced with another series Tama lug.. the original of that vintage break easily.. ps: I like the original bell brass more than this later model.
Meh. "Rage" is easily my least favorite band of the past 30 years, that type of playing does nothing for me.
