For anyone that's not in love with the round shape, I have confirmed through some extensive dork-out sessions and internal inspection that the now discontinued Dunlop JHM1 and JHM5 have exactly the same circuit, just rehoused in the typical phase90 sized enclosure. Additionally, the MXR Classic 108 (M173) also has the same circuit, but with a switchable buffer. For anyone wanting this sound but in a mini rectangular enclosure, the MXR Classic 108 mini (M296), and the Dunlop Psychedelic and Shrine series (JHW1 and JHMS1) also use the same circuit. But beware, the mini versions use miniature surface mount resistors and capacitors and in my opinion, do NOT sound as open and organic as the larger versions that use full size resistors and capacitors. Please don't let this open a debate on the sonic quality of SM components versus full size because and as Mick mentioned, you could simply tweak the knobs slightly and get closer. All this said, unless you're one for nostalgia, there's really no reason to eat up 22 square inches of pedalboard space with a full size version when the smaller versions will get you there. Yes, you might give up a percent or two of sonic quality, but just remember, all of this obsessing we do goes right out the window once the bass player and drummer start in.
I agree with you! I would much rather have the smaller foot print these days than an original or a copy of the original. But I also don't mind going digital, except fuzz you can't replicate fuzz with anything digital.
That Shrine Series is excellent. Switchable buffer and switchable between germanium and silicon is the best of all worlds and I believe the most feature packed fuzz face.
I had the big classic 108 and replaced it with the big round jhf1 and I have to say I massively prefer the sound and lower noise of the big round thing. And it looks cool.
Your missing a big part of that big enclosure magic and sound by not going with full size enclosure. Those transistors really open up in that extra space and get some reverb going.
The cleanup on a fuzz is a glorious thing. Always on. Everything from chimey clean to blown up amp and all places in between. You and Dan taught me this. Thanks
Agreed. Still want the long form shows, but this looks like a good way to quickly run through a particular pedal or pedal comparison and show the highlights.
Mick, you asked feedback on the format in the VCQ. I’m a fan. It reminds me of a couple of short comparing videos you used to do with “vs” in the title (before YT started the shorts actually). I’ve watched all of those but who am I, I watch everything TPS. I must say that these video’s were sometimes on my path for a rewatch when I needed the information. So they are concise. It’s good that you don’t leave the judgement (end conclusion, final thoughts) entirely to the audience who is not in the room with you, but instead give us some thoughts as you do here briefly but clearly. If you like doing this format, great! Do what gives you energy and some revenue. We will follow.
Thanks Tom. Ironically they may actually harm our revenue if the algorithm hates them. We'll see. But we're totally over doing things for the algorithm - RUclips doesn't pay much in any case, the majority of our revenue comes from our merch sales. That's what keeps the show afloat. I guess what we're after is just a way to attract more people to the fold and convince a few that staying for the long shows is where the value really is. Let's see! The danger is dumbing down to dumb questions. Hopefully we won't go there. Thanks for the feedback.
Your deep cuts are the reason I subscribe. Both of you bring the detailed analysis I want, and, importantly, joy. This video is a decent short. Vitally; if hits on this solve the shortfall of eyes on your main output I will watch every last one twice. Anything that feeds RUclips's instant gratification and ensures the continued long format output gets my support. Thank you guys, the heels that you are ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Really enjoyed this format, not that I would want the long videos to go away but this is a nice change up. Speaking as an electrical engineer, every electrical component has a tolerance and because the fuzz face circuit is so simple the effect of this tolerances is magnified. Always try out a fuzz before you buy it. You could have 10 fuzzes with sequential serial numbers and they will all sound different because of slight variations in resistance capacitance and transistor gain.
i have the little dark blue one. i think is silicon. it does the clean up thing well. i love that there are so many levels of gain between cleanish and fuzz. textures, colors, the good hit.
I love my FFM3. When I first got it and experienced the variation available via the guitar's volume knob, I thought, 'Well, I don't actually need a lot of these other pedals - I'd be fine with just this.' I've still got all the other pedals because, well, they're still fun, but my first impression remains accurate; a good amp, a good guitar and one of these will take you a long way.
This is a great new format idea comment please do a million of them! I’ve wanted a Jimi Hendrix fuzz face and this video has reignited a fire that has been burning a while. Fire. See what I did there?
Years ago I purchased the Eric Johnson Fuzz Face, which is a very good one. A couple of years later I also got the small Hendrix Fuzz Face as well. They sound very similar! But the small one is much cheaper and much more pedalboard friendly. It has a 9V AC jack, LED and the cable jacks from right to left as all the other pedals out there. It cleans up very well by rolling back the volume on the guitar. So get the small Hendrix Fuzz Face. It's great!
Having owned both, the big one is definitely smoother and cleanup better. The small one is still a very good fuzz, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for their first Fuzz Face or their 10th one 😊
Ill echo a few other people and say I appreciate this format. You guys have so many cool pedals and have the playing skills and knowledge to showcase them well!
Cool format, not everything needs an hour so I could see these being a good way to touch on something you’ve wanted to discuss but have set aside thinking there wasn’t quite enough for a full Friday
Think this short format will work well along side Monday's VCQ and the longer form Friday vids. Well done! Hope Dan is feeling better and able to film today.
Love these little vids in conjunction with bigger ones and love the vlogs too! More vlogs/tasks! Would be fun to hear a chat about guitars and gear sold to attain new things etc
gread new format! Love them both. I had the bigger one for a while and am very happy with it. Recently I have pulled the trigger also for the mini because of the board-friendlyness dimensions and 9V-jack. Great bang for the buck imo in both pedals.
Great comparison Mick! There were times where I felt the two there sounded the same and 1 or 2 moments where I felt like the mini compressed more. I have had about 4 different FFM3s and they were all similar but a couple stood out as being special. I think its just a matter of finding the right one because so many component variables can make each identical pedal sound slightly different....and that right combination of different is magical.
Don‘t know if I‘m biased, because I owned one, but to me the FFM3 cleaned up just as nice but had a slightly more open (nicer) clean tone. Not only that, it had the more aggressive fuzz, when the volume is up. I am still crying I sold the FFM3 - to be able to „upgrade to a „boutique“ Greuter Monlight. Very nice sound but nothing cleans up like the FFM3 (Si 108).
Love the format! And also think your opinion is absolute necessary since you are hearing it in the room. I only hope this doesnt mean "no more long format" cuz I love the show as it is as well! Cheers!
Love this format! Please keep making these short pedal videos in conjunction with your regular episodes if you can. Love the content and great to hear the similarities in both fuzz faces.
Of course like most regular TPSers I prefer the long form format, tangents n’all. But totally get that these new shorts will help to get through the backlog of pedals. I was very happy to see this comparison, as it’s been a question popping up for me. Seems like the mini pretty much held it’s own, which I like as I run a modest sized board and mini pedals help with the real estate 😊
Well I'm greedy always want more of Mick or Dan with a Fuzz. I generally prefer to run a Fuzz into a more driven amp/pedal than Mick used here but for comparison sake it makes sense. I'm convinced that fuzz pedals seem to sound 'better' or nicer to my ears with a battery. But I have the band of gypsy fuzz in the mini format and is bloody awesome
Good work. You've maintained the integrity of content being driven by better questions. Some questions can be examined in less time than others, for the others we have the BIG show. Life is too short for rubbish tone.
Love the new format. And if yall wanted to do a longer one, look into the MXR BC108 and Classic 108 fuzzes, and even deeper, the Dunlop JHW1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face. They all come with a buffer for playing with pedalboard placement before or after a wah, and the JHW1 if you can find it, comes with the option to switch between germanium and silicon transistors. All said, I love the mini series of Fuzz Faces, you can use the whole knob of volume or fuzz, so you can get all the normal sweet spots AND new ones!
I like it. the format. It does feel a bit hasty, but the kind of video is very helpful because when deciding upon which pedal to try out, I do search youtube for exactly this kind of content. If this helps TPS keeping up with youtube's wants, thats great. As long as you keep making deep dives, philosophical tangents, etc, love TPS for that
Liking the format! I originally had the Germanium Mini Fuzz Face which I didn't really get along with. Got the Jam Pedals Fuzz Phrase (not the LTD one) and immediately fell in love with it!
I own the mini and absolutely love it, best budget friendly-ish fuzz you can buy imo! I'm fairly new to playing and have tried a Little big muff, a superfuzz clone, and a TC Rusty fuzz, all good pedals for the price but wish i'd just bought the FF mini to begin with instead! Nothing compares to the versatility of the FFM3, especially when using a stratocaster, the volume knob cleanup is superb
Excellent job Mick. Nice alternative format. Still love what you guys do on a regular basis, but no harm to mix it up every now and then, just to keep it fresh!
On the video, they sounded pretty close. I like these occasional short TPS videos because I really like the show. I do love the in-depth longer shows and look forward to whatever you post.
Like this format. Works for a comparison, or even a blow through some new shiz that you like. Not a full on demo, just a quick play, what it does, what you like about it.
My guess would be the smaller bugger has slightly higher gain transistors (same type). Arguable about the LED. I have both as well and other than pot tolerance/taper slight variations it's all about the transistors. The lower gain the better in the JHF-1 I find. Tried 5 large ones before I picked one and after measuring that was the case.
I bought a Chase Tone Fuzz Fella recently, all the fuzz goodness of a classic Fuzz Face but with handy tone and bias controls. Would absolutley recommend to anyone wanting that classic fuzz tone
Mick, love the format! Here’s a suggestion you probably haven’t heard in a while: how about 5 minutes running thru the “oldie but goodie” Analogman King of Tone, compare sides, different settings for each, amp settings and talk about purchase options (high gain). Considering I’m in year 5 of the famous wait list, this would be most helpful….😊. Cheers!
Incidentally.. I own a Marshall “plexi” amplifier + most reissue Fuzz Face iterations, and have conducted the same experiment. Ultimately.. concluding that the larger, trad. size is slightly more articulate. Moreover, smoother & warmer as well-which is NOT to suggest the mini version is inferior. Rather, IMO, such produces a bit more treble-edge and a tighter, overall response. And.. of course, one has to appreciate its practical, board-friendly circuit / enclosure. Love it.. Strats, Marshalls, FUZZ, nostalgia ! Ultimately, if such weren’t for Jimi, we as guitarists wouldn’t have a JHF1 or FFM3 to enjoy. : ) - Thanks, Dunlop Mfg. As well, thanks Mick “Du Jour”. ( LOL. ) ⚡️👍🏻⚡️
Like the new format! Always be a huge fan of the regular long format Friday shows, it’s how I start my weekend, but having some smaller short format things on between those and VCQ would be awesome going forward
You guys must have read my mind. I'm thinking of getting one of these because I've been so impressed with Mick's tones from his large blue Hendrix Dunlop Fuzzface. I have an MXR Classic 108 and while it's great for running a wah or Univibe in front due to the inbuilt buffer, my 108 does this nasty high pitched whine when cranked, buffer/no buffer, wah or vibe in front or nothing between the guitar and the MXR - crank that Fuzz and *wheeeeeeeeee* I've tried batteries, super clean power supply, different guitars and leads/patch cables - nothing works. So, need a new Classic Fuzz!!
Quick tangent: bought the big one years ago with a Les Paul. Liked it, didn’t love it. Heard potential. Tried a classic 108. Buffer was horrible, fuzz was good. Bit more compressed and gainier than the big one. Didn’t clean up as well. Fast forward to last October when I acquired a Tele. Knew I had to try the JHF1 again, and there it was. Voila - tonal Nirvana.
Not sure if the small has trim pots inside, but once I adjusted the trim pots on the big one it became my absolute favorite, and I have (had) many of the so called best out there except the new faceless fuzz. Anyway, it’s a thing of beauty the big one…
Much like all the 1176 units I have used (a lot), I get the impression that perhaps we could obtain two versions, and they would both sound different but similar. What I mean is, the distinctions between big and small may be comparable to the differences between two big versions (just thinking about the next video haha!)
Cesar Diaz - Texas Fuzz Face. All the fuzz you want in a standard enclosure. Being a SRV guy I'm surprised you haven't had one on the show. Great pedal, although you do have to put it in it's own loop. It's a bit of a noisy bastard unless you isolate it.
Great format as a supplement to the long-form show. The FFM3 sounds like it might be a contender to replace the MJM London Fuzz (which is shockingly good) that I'd rather not expose to the horrors of gigging. Thanks for making the comparison.
If you like having a big board that other people think is ostentatious. I say ignore those people trying to make you feel one way or another. Having a crazy pedalboard never seemed to worry J Mascis or Kevin Sheilds
I'm not sure how Mick is powering the big one here but to me if the big one is on a battery and the small one is on a regulated 9v supply that is (believe it or not) a big factor in most tonal difference right there. A carbon type battery will often be at 9.6v or so when measured whereas a regulated 9v supply will be providing a steady 9v. Might seem trivial but that extra 0.6v can make a pretty noticeable difference in the bias of the unit - it being hotter on the battery which normally translates to a bit smoother fuzz/a bit better cleanup.
Awesome and timely. Last month I bought a Sun Face and Beano Boost (Delay Lllama Xtreme; Cali76 Stacked; Timmy V3; Radial ABY; Custom '68 DRRI; definitely watching too much of this show) and have just put those two on my big board so I was wondering what I would pull out of the collection for the small board to get into somewhat of the same territory. This just convinced me to give the Hendrix mini a try just down the chain from an Arcane germanium treble booster, both of which have had little love since purchase. Feels like you turned me into my own Op Shop in 5 mins. Thanks again. Let me know if you want my bank passwords, we can just cut out the middle man.
The short format is great, but I wonder if it might be a bit too short for some more complex stuff. Yes the pedals sounded different but they both sound great
Mick would never mention that the mini is actually damn near better. Most certainly cleaned way better. Not quite as biting as the big one fully up, but thats not as much the fuzz face sound by all accounts. Im not in the room and listening over youtube, and most of the time i agree with the guys but Mick is clearly romanticizing as usually and definitely shops with his eyes.
I shop with 35 years of playing guitar and spending the last 25 with many of the world’s best guitar players. It does bring a certain amount of motivated cognition, granted.
He Mick! Awesome addition to the longer format stuff. Love the "newish" camera angles as well. Makes me feel involved and fits the format. Wouldnt wanna miss the longer videos for the world, but quite alot of questions can get answered like this pretty quickly. For example. How do 2 Pro Juniors sound in W/D?! Or should I get a Blackstar St James or a Marshall JTM Studio 20?! Jokes aside, I love it!
Great video and annoyingly I think I prefer the bigger one (oo-er missus) - I just couldn't give up the cleanup, because that's what I love fuzz for. Cleaning up into massively monsterous sounds. In terms of the format, I think it works well but the ooooone thing I would like is for you to very quickly change to another guitar - humbuckers, P90s, or even just a Tele. You can't cover everything, because the video is supposed to be short-form. But I think for me even if the vid was 7:30, that would still satisfy the 'short' itch, and I'd prefer all the extra context. Maybe I'm alone in that! Just what came to me after I watched the video.
Surprised how close they were. Mini lost just a tiny bit of clarity at full and at rolled-back volumes. But honestly I’d still be happy playing the mini.
@@simpwood4973 Was yours one of the newer ones with the switchable buffer?
Your missing a big part of that big enclosure magic and sound by not going with full size enclosure. Those transistors really open up in that extra space and get some reverb going.
This channel taught me how to make a grown man cry with nothing but a couple delay pedals and a Blues Driver. NEVER STOP!
The cleanup on a fuzz is a glorious thing. Always on. Everything from chimey clean to blown up amp and all places in between.
You and Dan taught me this.
Thanks
I’d echo the sentiment of many other comments in that the long videos are very enjoyable while these could be fun too…. Keep ‘em both comin!
Good work Mick, seems like a format worth chasing for a while.
Thank you! Will help us get through a ton of pedals AND offer something to people who can’t / don’t / won’t sit through long shows. And it’s FUN!
I agree! I like this format alot 😊
Thank you guys, the heels that you are ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
These short videos are great! Would love one about Germanium vs Silicon fuzz face as well!
The Strat into that Marshall is glorious 🙌
A win for the format Mick. Carbon Copy vs Mini CC next please!
With the skilled playing of Mick du Jour, both are sounding great!
I agree. It’s hard to stay engaged in the long format videos. This is to the point and awesome.
You could put out 10 of these a week if you could think of ideas plus the main show. And questions. And I'd watch them all. No question . Marvelos !
Like the format, good to have a mix of long and short shows
Instant classic, Mick! This kicks off the series in a major way!
i have the little dark blue one. i think is silicon. it does the clean up thing well. i love that there are so many levels of gain between cleanish and fuzz. textures, colors, the good hit.

Great video gents - I love both. The mini seemed to have a hair more punch and presence to me.
This is a great new format idea comment please do a million of them! I’ve wanted a Jimi Hendrix fuzz face and this video has reignited a fire that has been burning a while. Fire. See what I did there?
Hahahah! Awesome. Somebody once told me he wrote that while trying to get warm in Noel's mum's cottage in Ireland!

I must offer congrats to Mick. He did a great job showing that fuzz doesn’t have to sound like a chainsaw on a garage door spring.

Ha, definitely not. The long form stuff is TPS lifeblood. This is a shot in the arm. :0)
love the long-form stuff but this is great too! digging it.
Been liking the new short format videos, thanks!
Love this format! Please keep making these short pedal videos in conjunction with your regular episodes if you can. Love the content and great to hear the similarities in both fuzz faces.
Nicely to the point, great format - but never stop the long form show !
Never. Fear not!
I bought the Hendrix since you love it so much- and then I did the JHS mod on it. Highly recommended!
Absolutely fantastic video, Mick. Somehow the five minutes seemed to fly by and feel really substantial at the same time.

Hahahaha!
Excellent job Mick. Nice alternative format. Still love what you guys do on a regular basis, but no harm to mix it up every now and then, just to keep it fresh!
Loved this Mick (you with a Strat, Marshall and a Fuzz Face!! What’s not to love!!) love the long form vids but the odd short vids do the trick too!!
Thanks Mick! The Jesse Davey mini Fuzz Ge is still on my board after hearing it on tps and i don’t think i’ll ever look back.
On the video, they sounded pretty close. I like these occasional short TPS videos because I really like the show. I do love the in-depth longer shows and look forward to whatever you post.
Thanks Scott!
I had the mini jimi one for years and foolishly sold it. It was amazing
Liking the shorter head to head comparison. Keep em coming.
Awesome feel in your playing through the Fuzz Mick Baby!
Thank you. Of all the homes I ever had, fuzz is probably the homeliest. :0)
Effector Du Jour. I want that on a t-shirt! It made me laugh so hard. C'est un immense plaisir de t'entendre jouer Mick Du Jour.
Hahaha! Thank you. A T shirt is in the works….
Merci monsieur! Le T-shirt est dans les works! Hahahah!
Great format and look forward to seeing more! Keep it up guys, great job.
I love it when you geek out on Fuzz-Faces, Mick. Do you notice a difference in feel/response with the vintage spec pickups? Sounds ace!
Yep, absolutely. And pot tapers, big time. Once the pickups start getting very powerful it all goes to pot, ahem.
Like this format. Works for a comparison, or even a blow through some new shiz that you like. Not a full on demo, just a quick play, what it does, what you like about it.
Thank you Joel - that’s exactly the idea, we’ll shoot a load and see how it unfolds!
My guess would be the smaller bugger has slightly higher gain transistors (same type). Arguable about the LED. I’ve been using the mini for years. Absolutely great Fuzz that also holds up with super expensive boutique stuff 👍☮️🎸
Cheers!
Nice! Great idea!
I do prefer longer videos. But I do like the short videos that just compare a few pedals. More TPS is better. Keep it up.
lovely tone and playing ,Puting a treble bleed you will hear a diferent and extended clean with fuzzes!
Love when you use the source audio reverbs! You should try the Ventris and mix room and spring together, either in parallel or cascade.
: )
- Thanks, Dunlop Mfg.
As well, thanks Mick “Du Jour”.
( LOL. )
⚡️👍🏻⚡️
Thumbs up for this format!
Like the new format! Always be a huge fan of the regular long format Friday shows, it’s how I start my weekend, but having some smaller short format things on between those and VCQ would be awesome going forward
I like the little one. you know, rooting for the underdog
Dang. That was smokin'. You just about set that strat on fire.
You guys must have read my mind. I'm thinking of getting one of these because I've been so impressed with Mick's tones from his large blue Hendrix Dunlop Fuzzface.
I have an MXR Classic 108 and while it's great for running a wah or Univibe in front due to the inbuilt buffer, my 108 does this nasty high pitched whine when cranked, buffer/no buffer, wah or vibe in front or nothing between the guitar and the MXR - crank that Fuzz and *wheeeeeeeeee*
I've tried batteries, super clean power supply, different guitars and leads/patch cables - nothing works.
Great video! Fun and quick, easier to sneak in during the workday. Cheers, Mick
Mini pedals are the way to go. It sounds ‘close enough’ and isn’t as heavy to carry around. 👍
Not sure if the small has trim pots inside, but once I adjusted the trim pots on the big one it became my absolute favorite, and I have (had) many of the so called best out there except the new faceless fuzz. Anyway, it’s a thing of beauty the big one…
Thought this was great, Mick!! It might even help appease the RUclips gods… Loved the wide angle shots too, particularly the widest one 🤙🏻
Great to see a Fuzz show! Ty! Happy Tuesday.
Totally distracted by the awesome playing (as usual). However I'm feeling the great vibes of the little one plus the convenience of the size. Cheers!
Much like all the 1176 units I have used (a lot), I get the impression that perhaps we could obtain two versions, and they would both sound different but similar. What I mean is, the distinctions between big and small may be comparable to the differences between two big versions (just thinking about the next video haha!)
I think it's a great way to demonstrate/compare a couple of pedals which are more or less the same.......me likey
This was short and to the point! I expect more nonsense, rambling and meandering from TPS. Come on mates, get it togther! 😂 Good clip btw Mick!
Thanks for making the comparison.
killer, love the big one a tad more
If you like having a big board that other people think is ostentatious. I say ignore those people trying to make you feel one way or another. Having a crazy pedalboard never seemed to worry J Mascis or Kevin Sheilds
Watching you play standing up I never noticed how similar yours and Doyle Bramhallls vibrato was. A right handed Doyle Great sounds
I prefer the larger fuzz as its seems a little brighter and cleans up more nicely. Fun vid!
Great idea for a series of videos!
Any chance of seeing a Catalinbread Sink Hole Effector Du Jour somewhere in the future? I would love to see what the TPS take would be on it.
Nice! I think we have one….
Love this new format!
Love the format
Yes the pedals sounded different but they both sound great
Love the mini on my board. Great video.
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback!
Just what came to me after I watched the video.
....I think I like the small one better.
Not a fuzziseur, but the small one does this thing in the vicinity of the highs I kinda like.
Surprised how close they were. Mini lost just a tiny bit of clarity at full and at rolled-back volumes. But honestly I’d still be happy playing the mini.
