Sadly...Pat Benatar’s higher range is gone. In her mid to low range she sounds somewhat hoarse. Perhaps due to years of smoking? She still has great stage presence and the band is still hot 😍

That was Pat's hardest riff but "Promises in the dark", "Hell is for children", and "Fire and Ice" are equally female independent rock songs. How is she not in the rock n roll HOF! They live for this shit!

"Some people probably like it." Yeah! That bridge you weren't sure about? If you are a rock n roll DANCER...you will find, you NEED that bridge. Trust me. And "women in rock just killin' it" in the '80's is the explosion of women having to slog through forever to get there and then yeah, they exploded!! "SHADOWS OF THE NIGHT!" Yep, that's my favorite...deserves all CAPS. But she has a handful of bangers: We Belong, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, You Better Run, Love Is A Battlefield, and Invincible are some of the more obvious great songs of hers.
Saw her live in the very early 80s and her drummer left an indelible impression on us. He didn’t sit down for the entire concert and just went CRAZY!!! We couldn’t take our eyes off of him and that’s saying something considering Pat was up front. Shadows of the Night is such a great song that I don’t see anyone else mentioning. It’s my 2nd fave after Heartbreaker.
Man, I bought their first album when it came out, and every other one after that. Saw them in '78 opening for the Ramones, and they blew me away, even without Cherie. I've loved them for a million years, even got a big kiss from Sandy West backstage. But for some reason, I've never been able to get into "Cherry Bomb". I don't hate it, but I don't have the passion/appreciation for it that most of their fans do. In fact, I was kinda happy that they didn't play it when I saw them. LOL! But, by no means do I think that just because I'M not a big fan of the song that it shouldn't be liked/loved by anyone else. Music, subjective, etc.

Promises in the dark is another one of my all-time favorites of hers. I think it shows her vocal range probably the best.
"Promises In the Dark" the official video is what you need to do next. My favorite by Pat Benatar. Her husband Neil "Spyder" plays some tasty guitar. Pat was classically trained in voice and has an amazing range. Pat and Neil are still together after all this time and still seem to adore each other. That may not be impressive from your viewpoint but it is pretty amazing from an old man's.
"Promises in the dark" is my favorite.....and "You better run", "Fire and Ice" and "Hit me with your best shot". "You better run" was the 2nd song played on MTV.

@George Duffy Sorry LOL I mean I married a man who thought it was smart to take a one-hitter into Disneyland and sneak behind the scenery every 10 minutes and take a hit. I didn't see Pat live until 2005 in Naples, Florida. Tried to go to an earlier show but you know who got busted in the parking lot selling weed :)
Quintessential 80’s only female rock vocalist. But for the ages: Patty Smythe, Alanis Morrisette, Melissa Ethredge, Linda Ronstadt, Chrissy Hynde, Anne Wilson, Janis, and Aretha Franklin.
This song came out when I was in High School and my sister had bought Pat Benatar's cassette with the "Heartbreaker" song and I would sneak into her room and get it and play it whenever it wasn't in her car - I LOVED it! My sis had a Dark Blue Firebird with a cassette/stereo system - state of the art back then. It was an awesome day when my sis invited me to go somewhere with her and she would play that cassette - we didn't know we had it so good!
She had a lot of radio hits. Hell Is For Children should be next. Great anti-abuse message, incredibly powerful vocals, great guitar work, & it's a banger. You Better Run, Promises In the Dark after that.
All the guys loved her back in the day. She however was smart and married her HOT guitar player and they're still happily married. She's still one of my idols and sounded just as amazing live. 😎
Pat Benatar is absolutely the most underrated Queen of Rock in rock history. This is water-downed, even tho i love it, it doesnt show the full magnitude of her voice. Hell is for Children is so necessary to understand her depth and talent.
More female singers! Patti Smith, "Gloria" (seriously, guys; you need this one) Linda Ronstadt, "When Will I Be Loved" Marianne Faithfull, "Broken English"
The Carpenters (specifically Karen Carpenter): "We've Only Just Begun", "Rainy Days & Mondays", "Close To You", "Yesterday Once More". Not rock, but you need to hear her voice.
As I remember from an interview back in the day she said she was an aspiring opera diva when she stumbled upon the fact that there was more fun and money in rocknroll. She could still exhibit her singing chops, have the fun, and money. Then as it gelled, her lead guitarist and musical partner became her husband. Long live Rocknroll! Thanks for sharing!!
As far as other women to check out, above all, check out Aretha Franklin: "Respect", "Think", "Chain of Fools", and "I Never Loved a Man" for openers. Alex mentioned women killing it vocally, but nobody kills it vocally more than Aretha. Another female artist you should hear is Blondie: "Heart of Glass", "One Way or Another", "Sunday Girl", "Hanging on the Telephone", "Atomic", and "Dreaming".
More essential women-fronted bands you need to look into: Blondie (Dreamin’, Hangin’ on the Telephone) and Missing Persons (Walkin’ in L.A., Destination Unknown, Words, and my fave, Mental Hopscotch.) Bangers.
I forgot about that sort of boring bridge part, that's a good call. Other great Pat Benatar songs: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Shadows Of The Night, Treat Me Right, You Better Run, Love Is A Battlefield and We Belong.
She was such a hard hitting singer with a killer band. I loved her music, great for forgetting that you were sitting in traffic on the 405 in Los Angeles.
I hear that! I spent hours doing just that with her albums cranked up as carpool driver for everyone I worked with in '81 and '82, having just moved back to the Valley against my will after 10 years in San Diego. It would be 16 more years before I made my permanent escape to Washington state and I've never looked back. Thank GOD for Pat!!!!
This came out when I was in 11th grade, and my friends put a band together, fronted by a couple of girls, and they played this at the talent show that year and tore the house down. Easy winners. One guy went on to a long career in the bidnez.
If you're staying with 80's pop rock for awhile, "Would I Lie To You" Eurythmics. If you're ready to raise the stakes', Patti Smith "Gloria" or "Land".
Yes to Patti Smith's Gloria! And definitely hit some Eurythmics/Annie Lennox - another powerhouse voice with terrific charisma. "Sweet Dreams" may not be a banger, but the video was my first glimpse of Annie's intense presence - those eyes staring into your soul!
Saw Pat Benatar live 4 times. She was incredible every time. Saw her open for Steve Miller in the early 90s, and as much as I love Steve Miller, Pat destroyed. Lighters held high throughout the open air theater for "Hell is for Children"... chilling. One of the best concerts.
Go down the rabbit hole. She is an amazing singer, and Neil Geraldo is a kickass guitarist. I was lucky enough to see her live in 1989 in Burlington, Vt. Amazing vocal skills!

Great stuff. Now try "Promises in the Dark" and "Shadows of the Night."
With Pat benatar you got a long way to go and a lot of songs that are awesome. You're going to have to hit them all...
Need to listen to "Somebody Bring Me Some Water" by Melissa Etheridge. She is phenomenal!
I'm The Only One, No Souvenirs - So many
Good call! Also Like The Way I Do and, though less of a banger, Similar Features.
Right on!
And Like The Way I Do.
I see others have suggested it... but Hell is for Children is an awesome Pat Benatar song.
I feel like it is her best!
She married the guitarist.
Again. "Hell is for children" live on Fridays. Its killer.
The rock singer with the classically trained operatic voice! Pat's pretty damned amazing.
God bless Pat Benatar‘s vocal coach in making her what she is today!
Pat was an awesome singer and her husband Neal Geraldo, the guitar player together rocked! Really enjoyed your reaction!
Was?
@@DTWC really?
@@Cashcrop54 well she's not dead. And I heard it not long ago still great, so really
Her most poppy FM tune single of her career. I'm glad your finally giving this ICON! ...a listen.
Patti Smith, "Gloria" (seriously, guys; you need this one)
Linda Ronstadt, "When Will I Be Loved"
Marianne Faithfull, "Broken English"
IMHO, the Queen of Rock and Roll. All hail!
The Carpenters (specifically Karen Carpenter): "We've Only Just Begun", "Rainy Days & Mondays", "Close To You", "Yesterday Once More". Not rock, but you need to hear her voice.
Definitely, and also "Goodbye to Love"
Best, purest female voice of all time! They called her "one take Karen"
Most beautiful voice, EVER!.
When both John Lennon and Frank Sinatra say she’s the best female singer they have heard, you know that’s saying something.
They Broke the mold with that voice❣️ Excellent drummer, too🥁
I really like the instrumental bridge, it lets you come up for air briefly rather than just hammering the same thing through the whole song.
"Shadows Of The Night" or "Promises In The Dark" should be next. Pat is great.
Both great suggestions.
Promises in the dark or hell is for children
@@keithweelands5822 Can't go wrong!
Hit after hit. Queen of the 80s. All over the radio and Mtv.
Singer/song writer Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London or Lawyers, Guns and Money
Warren Zevon all day. ❤❤
Yes! I’ve been asking for Lawyers Guns and Money!
Yes, please. 💜💜💜
“Send lawyers, guns and money, the shit has hit the fan.” Warren Zevon had a way with words.
Splendid Isolation too
Just saw them for the first time on 4/15! Great show! Neil is a seriously underrated guitarist, and the power of Pat's voice is just amazing!
Next: Hit Me With Your Best Shot
While I prefer Promises in the Dark, Hit Me With Your Best Shot is Pat's signature song.
This is my favorite.
There are so many good songs by her, some of my favorites:
Love is a Battlefield
Fire and Ice
We Belong
Shadows of the Night
We Live for Love
The Pretenders - 'BANGER Middle of the Road' or LOT OF BASS 'My City Was Gone'
For me it's "Precious"
Why does no one include Rapture in their Blondie recommendations?
I love Missing Persons. I got to see them in concert. Her voice is like no other in rock.
Then there's the time that rocker guy married this opera chick and together they made little bangers.
😂
Those bridge intervals are a rhythmic “callback” to the pattern that you already liked so much in the chorus.
I forgot about that sort of boring bridge part, that's a good call. Other great Pat Benatar songs: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Shadows Of The Night, Treat Me Right, You Better Run, Love Is A Battlefield and We Belong.
Brought tears to my eyes when you guys reacted hard to the high harmonic section and the pull back. So good.
Just as awesome live! WHAT A VOICE! Saw her umpteen years ago.
Linda Ronstadt: Poor, Poor Pitiful Me, Tumbling Dice, Different Drum (with the Stone Poneys)
Linda Ronstadt is one of my favorite female vocalists. She had it all
You’re No Good as well.
I am all in for Patti Smith Gloria!
Best first line ever!
Patti Smith "Gloria" or "Free Money" for sure! I would pay money!
100% Would I Lie To You
Good job guys. Pat's gorgeous and powerful voice with Neil's guitar was a perfect mix in the late 70's and early 80's...
Thumbs up if you want some Collective Soul, maybe “Shine “ or “December “
Collective Soul has better songs that were not WAY overplayed on the radio
Saw Pat Benatar live 4 times. She was incredible every time. Saw her open for Steve Miller in the early 90s, and as much as I love Steve Miller, Pat destroyed. Lighters held high throughout the open air theater for "Hell is for Children"... chilling. One of the best concerts.
She covered the John Cougar Mellencamp song "I Need a Lover". Both versions a worth a listen. Intro on Mellencamp version is killer IMO 😎
Go down the rabbit hole. She is an amazing singer, and Neil Geraldo is a kickass guitarist. I was lucky enough to see her live in 1989 in Burlington, Vt. Amazing vocal skills!
FINALLY!!! 💥💥💥❤️❤️❤️😅😅😅
Yay! Pat Benatar. She has a great catalog of banger songs.
"hell is for children" by Pat Benatar is a must listen to please ☮️
Was banging this song a couple days ago and thought "I'd like to see Alex and Andy listen to this" and you DID--a year ago. Nice!
