The ultimate female rock singer!!! Incredible control! Her harmonies in the studio are impeccable!!! At 66 she’s still at it!!!
66, just a babe, great vocalist!
Well...Ann Wilson (of HEART).....same argument. and Ann writes most of her songs. I like Benatar...saw her when her blues album came out///early 1990s...Beacon Theater/NYC. . She did the entire new album, and maybe 3 of her older songs (sigh).
Ann Wilson bro
And she's still gorgeous!
Her sense of pitch is amazing.
Gritty rock with a great voice .Such a huge contribution
Pat has been married to the same person for the last 37 years,,,,,must be a music industry record.
Married her guitarist. Springsteen married a back up singer...so did Chris de Burgh. CdB to best of my knowledge is only one who cheated. But he did it at home....with nanny.
When I was a young(er) guitar player wannabe, I was so envious of Neil's talent. Now I am an old man, and I am more envious of the relationship Neil and Pat have.
@Jeffrey McFadden. I can think of only one musician that has been married longer than Pat and Spyder-Alice Cooper. In March, he and Sheryl will celebrate their 44th wedding anniversary.
Probably the quintessential female rocker. That somewhat raspy voice with raw power.
She is an icon of female rock singers and her hubby shreds.
Her husband Neil is a Excellent guitarist.. great improviser
My old jamming buddy Dave Stitz grew up with Neil. He said several guys in their circle got guitars and started practicing together .
Within a year Neil was far over everybody else's level. In two years he was ''better than most people ever get''.
Came up playing with Rick Derringer
@@RobertErnestLewis very cool👍
@@jearly5859 very cool
@@RobertErnestLewis Passed by Derringer on his way... 👍
Along with Anne Wilson the two best female rock singers of our time. Pat was classic trained and did opera at an early age and even did a solo album with some interesting work on it. Neil Geraldo on guitar played with Rick Derringer at a very young age (If I weren't so romantic) album and some live shows. He learned a lot from Rick and you can see and hear his influence on this song big time. Great stuff !
Never knew Rick and Neil played together?
@@54chewbacca There is a live album out there with Neil in the band. Live at Paradise Theater .... I think it is. Rick has a Legends DVD available and he talks a little about Neil joining the Derringer band.
@@RobertErnestLewis Thanks brother,,,looking into it. Rick was the reason I first picked up a guitar
@@54chewbacca I started playing in the early 70's with so many amazing influences to listen to and try figuring out. Rick was my first connection with a Rock Star Guitar Hero that would expand my understanding of guitar for many years. Keep On Rocking !
She is a tidal wave of power with her strong vocal abilities.
her husband Neil is awesome on guitar!
No, I never had a Pat Benatar poster on my wall (I definitely did) and I also didn't used to hug her album cover while I listened to In The Heat of the Night (don't go there!). Yeah, to say I loved her would be an understatement! Broke my heart when I found out that damned guitar-slinger Neil stole her heart. Well it seems to have worked out! Thanks for listening to this Fil! Been waiting for it! Peace!
I think that we are both old enough to remember when over night every girl in sight was wearing a head band and tight leggings. Horizontal striped shirt was optional.
@@NuclearGrizzly I'm in that age group. Every girl wanted to be her, and every guy wanted to be her guy.
I just saw her a couple months ago and she was still rocking it and her husband still kicks ass on guitar! 👍🏼🤘🏼
Omg, I'm so glad you did Pat Benatar. Long time fan... One of the best and first female rockers to go to the top of the charts! Thank you. ♥️😁
Love Pat and had the pleasure of meeting her back in the seventies when she got off her tour bus at a hotel I was working at. Had no idea at the time she was a trained opera singer, what a voice and such a power packed into such a small body!
I've always liked Pat..she is an innovativer ..jammin' tune..husband good guitar player..she has a good drummer too..thanks Fil
She can rock man, should be in rock and roll hall of fame. There are artists in the hall of fame that have half the talent. She never played the game did what she wanted. Neil and Pat never gave in to anyone. Well done Pat and Neil, u have more integrity than most artist. Never sold out.
Pat Benatar and the band did a good live show here. Love that song. Thanks Fil! ✌
Nobody can break down a musical performance like Fil. I he not only tells me that I'm watching a great performance but, why it is great. I really enjoy his insight.
Phenomenal analysis! I get to enjoy Pat Benatar live tomorrow. This will be my 3rd concert. I had no idea back in the 80's that one day I'd be taking my 18 year-old daughter (she's so excited!) to see my rock and roll idol... 40 years later!! She's a true and lasting powerhouse!
After quitting her bank teller job, Pat Benatar went to the same university as me ---- Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond VA to take voice classes. She lived in a residential area known as "The Fan" and rode a bike to campus like a lot of us did. She played gigs at some of the local joints in town. She is still remembered as a local girl who made it big.
Still sounds Great!! Love the t-shirt!!!
Great analysis, Fil! She was unique. I saw a documentary on her where she was touted as a female who could hold her own with the bad boys of rock (singing wise). I think she said she had a four octave range on an American TV show in the 80s. Amazing what a voice like that did for Rock. You gotta cover Tom Keifer (lead singer and guitarist & pianist for Cinderella). Outrageous how many great songs came from him and his unique voice.
Her mother was an opera singer. If you can sing opera, rock is a piece of cake.
Keifer can't sing any more. That unique voice ruined his actual voice.
Tom Keifer performed here in Sacramento last week. Didn't know until it was too late. Would have loved to see him. It as taken some time for his voice to heal. Loved the glam rock era and Cinderella. The Struts are rocking the glam look. A great Brit band with great energy. Lead singer channels Freddie Mercury with Joan Jett's hair. 🤟🤟
She had a 5 octave range. Just insane
I’m so happy you did Pat Benatar she is such a great singer and so different with her songs. Thank you Fil
Ty Fil....there are a hand full of great female rock vocalists that I enjoy.....Ann Wilson, Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Nicks and of course Pat Benatar. And her hubby Neil Giraldo is an excellent guitarist.
@ John Fuentes
Do not forget Patti Smith and Anne Lennox!
Another great female rock vocalist is Ruby Starr. Check her out.
ElusvOptmst1 Ir Chrissy Hynde Singer/songwriter, guitarist, for The Pretenders. ‘Middle of the road,’ comes to mind.
Don’t forget Joan Jett
Grace Slick should not be left out of any great female rockers list.
Saw her when she opened for Steve Miller at Red Rocks in Denver. Her set blew Steve Miller out of the water and she was pregnant at the time! Became a huge fan that day after never really following her when I was younger. Love your history lesson. She really is something special (and still hot).
Thanks Fil! I love Pat Benatar!! She was a rock and roll staple back in the 80s! I thought I had seen and heard in a documentary about her career that she was classical trained in Opera when she was young and at some point learned that she had a five-octave vocal range. She had so many hits but I did not know she had so many albums that went platinum!!... a few years ago she was scheduled at the Illinois State Fair but the concert had to be cancelled due to inclement weather....😣😢
✌❤🤘
Oh no that's annoying!
I seen them here in Detroit a few years ago, every summer they do a thing called,"Rockin on the Riverfront " it's free unless you wanna get VIP tickets. They were great that night and she still has it.
Lori , why are you so cute ?
I never liked Pat thingy . I was into punk and new wave. Devo and Blondie , and bands like The Slits and Delta 5 . I couldn't stand Pat Benetar . Boring as hell . Oh well . 🙄🎵😏
You are by far the most knowledgeable react/reviewer on RUclips and quite the singer, song writer , musician in your own right. Way to go Fil.
one of many reasons I love Neil and pat is they love each other so much that you see it on stage. The way they flirt with each other and feed off each other. They always put on a great show.
I saw her around 1979 in a small bar in Memphis Tennessee on Overton Square.. I was about 19. I think.Im 60 now. She packed rocked and exploded that place. She owned that mic. What a powerhouse ! Great Video!
Yes!!! Absolutely yes!!! Shoot I'm telling my age but Pat and Joan jett were the reason why I picked up a GUTAIR, I was shy shy shy but these ladies were the great rockers!👍 🤘👏 also gotta say I love this channel!!!!
Thanks!
Heartbreaker was recorded by British singer, Jenny Darren and released on her 1978 Queen Of Fools album one year before Pat's version came out in 1979. Good Luck finding Jenny's version though. I have the vinyl record.
Pat is only 5 ft tall .She may be small but that voice is impressively powerful! Great job Fil !
Wow, she looks taller than that! I'm around her height...
Absolutely the best female rock vocalist! In more recent times such as this, she seemed to avoid showing off the octaves she could hit in the 80s, but gosh that tone!! One of my favorites. And Neil Giraldo is a fantastic guitarist! ✌🏻😎🎸
That big voice coming out of that itty bitty body.... I believed it back in the eighties and I believe it now Pat never got the recognition that she should have gotten! She got to certain point but she still didn't get the recognition say like Stevie Nicks, Whitney Houston, ETC you get the point!!!❤✌
I love her voice.
Another great video Fil! Also, though it may be out of print, Pat did a collection of her music videos with her husband Neil and not only did they do audio commentary tracks for all of them, you could see them do this picture in picture. Hope they all get updated for HD and an updated set turns up. She remains one of the greatest singers ever!
Thanks for getting back into some rock n roll!
I've made this comment on other videos. Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo are overdue for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Agreeing with the comment below, Pat is the "ultimate female rock singer." She will always be the queen of MTV. Rock!
She will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November 2022.
I still have those original vinyl records from her early releases...always loved her!! I even got to do one of her songs at a Christmas party from work back in the day...minus the killer back-up vocals, of course...lol! She's still amazing! Those here, being critical of her vocal range now, just wait until *you're* 66 and see what *you're* still capable of...she could *still* kick your asses, vocally!! lol 😉🧡
Pat Benatar is a prime example of someone who "has it" and proves it year after year.
Fil, with your musical knowledge and background there no wonder that your analysis are simple the best on RUclips.
Thanks Drew!
Agree
The best female rock singer of all time! She needs to be in the HOF.
A great technical explanation of the use of different vowels at the top of the range. I was taught this many years ago, by a vocal coach, but have never heard it "unpacked" as well as you did here. Pat B. was classically trained, and it shows. Great analysis as usual.
Thanks Fil! I really enjoy listening to you and have learned much. Big 😁
She's HOT! Talented, but she's got a better video. Promises In The Dark. Chills Fil........ She's wearing a navy blue jumpsuit, 80's. 😘 I love they're still together! ❣
A good rock and roll love story to be sure! I lost track of them for many years. Learning they were still married was such great news.
Yes! Great song. They always made such a hot couple. 🔥 Still are.♥️
Ree McLaughlin Promises In The Dark is one of my very favourite songs by Pat! ❤️
I absolutely LOVE the video you’re referencing & you’re totally right, it’s amazing!💯❣️
Also love that she & Neil have been together for *so long!* And to also have that working relationship... outstanding! It speaks volumes of their ability to communicate & mutual respect. ❤️
@@sophiecat14 speaking of mutual respect, I think it's awesome that later on in their career, she added her husband's name to their billing so they toured and recorded as Par Benatar and Neil Geraldo, giving him the credit he deserved as the main writer, arranger, producer, and musician for her music.
Thank you. I love your analyses of all the different singers and musicians. You really know your way around music and all that goes into it. ❤
Lovin' your analysis of these songs. You do a great job and I enjoy watching your videos. I really love the history of the artists and/ or the songs that you bring out in each of these. Thank you Fil for doing all that. It's much appreciated.
I'm across the Pond and followed your reply minutes ago, and jumped right to Pat Benatar. Excited!
I have to admit that I was surprised that Pat wasn't even attempting all of those high notes on the album version. She still sells the rest.
As always , you have the best analysis on guitar and singers !! You are spot on with your creativity and views !!
Love your analysis vids, Fil. Keep up the entertaining content!
Fil I’m really enjoying all your videos! We Belong is my favourite PB song ever.
Another great analysis, Fil!Pat is a great vocalist and performer!! 👍👍👍
Always a pleasure hanging out with Fil and learning more about music history and many of our favorite artists. Another sensational breakdown Fil, thanks mate!! \m/
Excellent jam packed info. Pat is definitely legendary...And her husband.Great video !
I recently found this channel and am enjoying it very much. I appreciate how you cover many different genres and especially how you obviously enjoy and appreciate the music from different eras and styles.
Thanks!
Once again I wake up with all kinds of plans for the day, only to find myself going down the Wings of Pegasus rabbit hole, finding new analyses to watch and enjoy. Curse you, Fil, you've kept me from a day of cleaning out the garage and weeding the garden!! On a more serious note - this is the first I knew Pat had a tattoo, and I never realized there's only one guitar . . . I learn something new every time I watch one of these. Thanks!!!
😂👍
Hey... thank you Fil for playing one of my old requests ! I've always loved Pat ... what a powerful voice ! ❤ ....& husband Neil Geraldo can really shread that axe 😎🎸 They've been a perfect team for so many years ! Thanx again Fil 😉 Great in depth back stories like alway... great job. I guess you could say she's had a pretty good ( awesome ) career 😉 way to milk that ending Neil ! 😎🎸
Ok I'm back on the Beth Hart Immortal Live at Paradiso (request train) but I won't keep bugging you cuz I know you'll stick her on that master request list you have going ! Nice work mate... I think Pat was my 4th request you've done 😆 I really enjoy dropping in here every night because you always have something interesting or some sweet classic rock but it's not just the music it's the way you really did into the artist's or groups career/history and always have a cool back story or two. ROCK ! 😎🤘
I was hoping you would analyze Pat.
Fil, I applaud your thoroughness in your analysis and in your response in hearting every comment. I have never seen that before on you tube.
Yay!!!
I am so happy you included Pat in your recent analysis of awesome women performers..
Her husband/guitarist is so underrated and overlooked for how good he is..
I seen her in 1988..she definitely had her sassy pants on that night.. I tried so hard to look like her back in the day and failed miserably because there is and will always only be one Pat..
Pat is awesome... And so are you FIL..thanks for all you do..
I know it has been said before but I love how positively you analyze performances. You could certainly focus on the negative but you don't. Your analysis is done in such a supportive way. I really appreciate that and have been searching your channel for people/groups/songs from my life and you have already covered so many of them. Thank you so much and so happy I found you channel. Honestly surprised you have never done either the Mamas and the Papas or Cass Elliott's voice, at least not that I could find on the channel. Maybe for the future.
Absolutely love the history you bring with your videos. It's almost like watching a mini documentary.
Thanks Fil, another great analysis. You're an Encyclopedia of music history, terminology & explanations. I feel a bit wiser each time I watch your channel. Good stuff. 🙂👍
Someone much younger than me is going to Google Encyclopedia. The irony of that is not wasted on me. What a world. Lalalalala.
Smashing job Fil ! I've been a fan of Pat Benetars since the 70s and didn't know all this info about her history. You really do your homework.
Hey! Look who it is! Pat Benatar! I love 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot'! She has a great vocal range, love this video, and your brilliant analysis! Congrats on reaching 80 thousand Filip..
Thanks Paula!
@@wingsofpegasus You're Welcome, hun.....
Oh.......now you did it. One of the best little rockers ever. Husbands a damn good guitarist as well
What a great presentation and review. Spot on as usual. Neil is one of my favorite guitar players. He is/was underrated and overlooked, but he had style. His confidence here on stage is amazing. On the album version of this song, it's obvious that Pat is performing all of the background vocals as well. Some of the time her voice is doubled and not digitally delayed. A great effect. In the middle where she is singing acapella, they had her voice basically "dry" with a slight effect added. Another great effect.
Pat Benatar and her husband Neil are both outstanding! As always you expand my knowledge of such legendary performers. Thank you Fil!
Great to see you doing Pat and your analysis, especially of her vocals is very insightful. The first thing I noticed about this performance early on was her vowel modification, because it was not there in the studio version on the radio--she hits the E vowel easily altho maybe not with as much power. But it's a great point that using the A vowel is a way to conserve her voice while on tour. I'm something of a vocalist, but never took any lessons so that is all new knowledge to me--thanks, Fil!
Way to go, Fil!! You hit 80 thousand subscribers!! Congrats!! And...another fantastic review of a great voice!! "Hit Me With Your Best Shot!" Cheers, mate!! :)
Thanks brother for this reaction, Pat and Neil rocked the 80's. I was wondering if you would react to "Styx." That was great vocals and guitar playing personified.
My band opened for her in a small club (The Showboat in Metairie LA) about a week before she broke out and started selling out stadiums.
BTW Neil Giraldo played me under the table. 😁😁😁
You and everyone else 😁😁
They don't call him spider for nothing!😉
NuclearGrizzly Wow!! Lucky! That is awesome.
We also opened for the band Girlschool. They should have been huge but never seemed to hit.
@@NuclearGrizzly I also thought Girlschool would hit-- with the help of Noddy "I'm off to Crete" Holder.
@@surfpsych They had a lot of help from Lemmy as well. Just one of those mysteries of the Universe.
Thanks Fil! Pat in her 60’s, Let that soak in. Pat and Spider, deadly combo.
Mmmm.... HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT.... FIRE AWAY!!! Loved it and so many other great songs. Thanks for another great analysis, Fil.
OMG! WOP keeps getting better. Thank you, thank you
Loving it channel man!
Fun fact : Neil played lead guitar on Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl".
yes Pat Benatar enough said , yes as teen back in the day she put many of smiles on our faces lol and she wore spandex well , but her hubby is great player , her voice is incredible
Soooo enjoy watching ur critiques
STELLAR PERFORMANCE!!! Would have loved to have been there!!! Always loved Pat Benatar...what a voice!!! Thanks, Fil, for pointing out "vowel modification"!! I'm always learning from you ; )
Saw Pat Benatar in 1980 at the fabulous forum in Los Angeles Ca! Man sweet show and she was amazing! talk about an underrated guitarist Neil Geraldo is a killer player you never hear about!
You really did your homework on Pat’s career as well as Neil’s impact on both of their long running success. Really enjoyed your insight and cute as hell expressions while watching them. 🙃
Pat Benatar was my first concert in 1982 at Red Rocks, CO, USA.
She is simply, amazing! Neil and Pat, (We) Belong Together! 👏👏👏
I saw Pat for the first time in the Fore and Aft, a small club in Brewster NY before she released an album. She was fantastic.
Love this video! She is such an influencer. I wanted to look like her so badly when I was 12 😊 That voice though, wow ❤
This is more like it! Great video. Pat always has rocked.
🤘
Funnily enough, I was having a sing-a-long in the car last night to that song - everyone loves it! Of course, the words get changed from heartbreaker to shoemaker, etc. Thanks for giving us the best of Pat.
I've seen her 3 times, and each time she rocked it. Her and Neil are the real deal. Thanks, Fil!!
HI FIL PAT STILL HAS IT ALL .FIL YOU DO A VERY GOOD JOB LIKE ALWAYS. LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOES.. LOVE YOU GUYS.THANKYOU FIL AND GUYS FOR ALL YOU DO. LOVE YOU PEACE AND LOVE
Way to go I grew up listening to Pat Benatar most of the 80s was a blur with the exception of her music and I didn’t know that much about her I knew the classical training Though! As far as I’m concerned she was one of the best reasons for listening to any music in the 80s😎🙃 and this is a great video thanks
Amazing control of her voice
OMG you review ALL the GREATS! Pat is still a tough cookie!!!💪😁 I had/have Crimes of Passion on vinyl, then cassette, then DVD! Lol!
Hell Is for Children is my fave from her.. The subject matter of that song really took my attention.. Yeah.. A real talent for sure Fil! As always your back stories on these artists is awesome!
Also my favorite by Pat.
Hey there my new friend.. I am sorry that I kept spelling your name with the ph.. I'm sure you're in balance with acid and base.. a chemistry pun!! .so thank you Fil!! Love PB!! Enjoyed the depth on the accents and range.. as a
I've said.. you're running a cool channel! Always appreciated Neil..
Frank from Boulder, Colorado, USA
No problem!
Several years ago I bought a box set of Pat because it had all the songs I liked (including the “guilty pleasures” like “We Belong”) and because I wanted to hear the rest of her catalog. After her “prime” she started to get a reputation for being quite the blues singer. In the liner notes (another thing the digital age is unfortunately killing) it mentioned that she has some insane vocal range like 3 or 4 octaves! All that aside, something that just floors me about people like her who have had decades long careers and huge bodies of work, is that they can go out and perform just about any of it from memory!
Check out her singing Crying by Roy Orbison. It's a demo that she did before being discovered. I think Roy would approve.
Freaking incredible singer. It's crazy that she comes from an Opera background but it would explain her crazy control over her vocals
Really like Pat & Spider, my favorite married rock and roll couple. I like Spider's guitar tone, too! Great info on the vocals and the vowel sounds!
Hey thanks for doing Pat Benatar. Maybe Brenda Lee?
You, my brother, know your business. Another great analysis.
Marvelous! Thank you! I love Pat's rendition of "I need a lover" by John Cougar Mellanka,p.. I also love the note she hits at the end of "Hit me with your best shot".
Still Promises in the Dark is probably my favorite song
Had a friend I used to write in for karaoke-only one I knew could do justice to the high notes in that song
