Pat Benetar was trained in Opera, that's why she has such control over her voice and can project her voice without straining
I've been told Opera also trains one in emotive singing (like the anger expressed in "Fire and Ice" or "Hell is for Children") and stage presence. Both are needed for Opera to work, and evidenced in her singing and concert performances.
Pat Benatar is a powerhouse vocalist in a petite frame. She had a lot of great songs in the 80's such as "Heartbreaker", "We Live For Love", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", Fire & Ice", "Love Is A Battlefield", "We Belong", "Invincible", "All Fired Up", "Treat Me Right", "Promises In The Dark" etc.
Rated X was one of my favourites
I think my all-time favorite of hers is We Belong.
@@joefaller4525 That's a very nice song. I like that, Promises.., and Hell Is For Children. The way she hits "Hell" with such passion and conviction is a bit scary, like she's possessed by the ghost of an angry betrayed child.
Top 3 female rockers of all time. Just an absolute powerhouse
EVERY song is in her range. She has no restrictions. She and Neil: the voice of a generation.
The 2nd artist ever played on MTV was Pat Benatar. Total icon for us Gen Xers.
Indeed. When I think about Pat Benatar, I think back to junior high school and high school.
I was greatly amused that one of the ships in Guardians of the Galaxy (MCU) was called the Benatar.
Was our music friggin' great, or what?
@@runsayn We thought great music would just keep coming as sure as the sun rises
1982 first concert I ever saw in High School. She was one of my heroes back then. This was The Get Nervous Tour.
She was an opera singer originally ❤.
She is a trained opera singer. She gave it up to become a rocker star.
Thank you. Not many people know that.
This is my favorite Pat Benatar song, I think it's the closest she ever came to hair metal. I really like her vocals on this one.
It is amazing to see her and Neil click so well together all these years.
When I was a kid in 1980, thought she was pretty good so bought her 2cnd record Crimes Of Passion and was really impressed every song on the record was good, no filler, and was really surprised to find her beautifully done cover of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights. Kate was sacred ground for me, but Pat's cover is so beautifully done, I really fell in love with her first 5 records, the 5th of which is a live record. She's an enormous talent!, her husband and collaborator Neil Giraldo is a great guitar player too!.
Such a huge voice from such a small lady. I've been a fan of her even though I was into metal. I played her music loud and proud.
Another trained Opera singer turned Rocker!!!
The rocker edge…..from her playing Zephyr in Harry Chapin’s rock opera “The Zinger”. It ran a month or so, but Pat sang Zephyr for about 15 years. Along with Ann Wilson, one of the best female rock singers EVER.
My first concert ever. I was 16 and in awe of this powerful woman.
if you watch the entire DVD you will see Pat leans into it on every song.
She was an opera singer before she became a pop singer or a rock singer, she’s a bad ass singer!
Spectacular vocal control and range! A+! One of the best female artists of all time in my opinion!
Need to hear her sing Promises in the Dark!
I ❤️ Pat Benatar since I was 11 years old. Douglas London from London England 🇬🇧
Pat Benatar is a power house of a singer. Incredible voice and she kept the amazing range thru the years.
I saw Pat perform live a few months ago. It was my first time seeing her live and she blew me away. Her voice is still incredibly strong, she really put on a fantastic show. She was still able to hit all the notes. I was so impressed and would definitely see her again. One of the best singers of our generation.
Legendary. Every girl wanted to be Pat Benatar. She began as an opera singer.
I just saw her in concert. She's still amazing.
It doesnt get any better than Pat. Excellent reaction......
She's one of the greats. I think she started out trying to emulate Liza Minnelli. One of the greatest female singers in history.
Such an incredible, unique and powerful voice.
Have you ever listened to “Don’t Let it Show “? That song really shows her voice. It’s a slow song but her range is incredible.
can you imagine seeing that in concert? that was an epic performance
Love me some Pat & Neil...their collaboration has given us some fantastic music. My wife & I are going to see them this summer, we are so excited!!😃
Absolute Goddess of music.
Would love to see you react to the song "Promises in the Dark" from the same concert, or from the original video, to see Pat Benatar at her Best. I've had a crush on her since I first saw her on Rock magazines back in the early 80's!
Pat is truly one of the greatest singers from every genre. shes pretty brilliant.
Do fire and ice please. She's my all time favorite ❤
About 15 years ago I saw her live and was surprised to hear that she sounded almost the same as in this performance. She put on a great show and brought back great memories.
1979 the first time I heard Heartbreaker. It still blows me away.
And she is easy on the eyes too!!! Awesome singer!
New viewer and I love your vids covering classic rock and metal. I have see Pat Benatar 4 times live. Been backstage with her and Spider once. Such truly talented and fun people. Very down to earth.
Just saw her in concert in July 22, grew up with her and man they did notttt disappoint!
She played a big part of my life growing up in my top 5 singers she is a rocker and like 5"3 she was the first female to be played on MTV a rocker for sure
5 feet! Teeny tiny. I had the pleasure of meeting her and a photo op. She came to my shoulder and I’m not tall. Goddess!
@@jeffreybennington-vv4tn wow I was just guessing cool
@@randalladams7692 Oh yeah, she's very tiny. I met her once, back in 1980. I'm 6 feet tall and she was easily a foot shorter than me. Totally adorable. Very friendly.
I was there! I snatched a poster letting the audience know that they were recording the performance! Did you know the 2nd song played on MTV was her song "You better run". My favorite song of hers is, "Promices in the dark".
She didn't just do some classical singing. She was trained as an opera singer. Look for her vintage videos - her cover of "Crying, (live)" the True Love album, the lullaby she recorded for charity, etc. Her voice is stellar.
I'm really interested if there are any recordings of her singing opera in high school or cabaret in her 20's before Chapin discovered her.
The guitar player, Neil Giraldo, is Pat’s husband. They have been married since 1982! 🙂
She’s a very well trained singer. As a kid- learning from singing with records - I was not at all a rock singer but using her songs as guides to go into high notes was a goal as I was solidly an alto. I still love to do some Pat Benatar karaoke when no one’s home. There’s a LOT more growl in her voice here than on her records - but it’s all good technique because she can pull right out of that and sing clear and clean. Listen to her cover of Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights on the Crimes of Passion album which really shows her versatility. Without great training (in Opera!) no way would she be singing so well at 70. Love her so so much! ❤️🔥
Wonderful. I was always a Pat Benatar fan. Got her debut album as one of the first vinyl I owned. Right after Queens LIVE KILLERS. Must have been 1979. 13 years old. Gosh, this really takes me back.
Insanely cute and sexy, and absolutely no one sings better than she does. A tiny adorable little elf, with enough vocal power to blow the roof off the place.
Everything about Pat and her music matches her , POWERFUL AND STUNNING !
I saw her in the 80's and as I sit here in 2023, it was a privilege
I adored Pat Benatar when I was a teen. It's amazing that she hasn't remained as popular as many other singers of the time.
This and "Don't Stop Believin'" are the 2 greatest songs ever recorded by the greatest male and female vocalists of all time.
Such a great show! I can remember when MTV played whole concerts on , I believe, Saturday nights and this was one of those shows in part because her videos were such an important part of the early days of the channel. She's such a stellar singer.
I don't know if this ever aired on MTV, but it was originally broadcast on HBO, minus a couple of songs. The opener "Treat Me Right" was omitted for some reason, among others.
First time I had a chance to see Pat in , (outdoor festival) , a tornado landed not far from the concert area in Minnedosa, Manitoba. Her show was cancelled. She went back a couple years later (1999, I believe)...and I had the privilege of witnessing greatness. So happy I had the opportunity. She and Neil Giraldo were completely engaged with the audience and responded to the crowd of a "Classic Rock Fest" with total class!!
I get goosebumps when she sings live….so much power!
Pat Benatar, Ann Willson, are from a different time. That DVD as a whole is incredible.
Grammy Award winner for "Best Rock Vocal Performance", Female, 1983.
I've heard that Pat Benatar is a classically trained mezzo-soprano.
She trained as a coloratura before she got the Rock bug. An example of her high head voice can be heard on the song "Fire and Ice" and "We Belong"
Her cover of Wuthering Heights is like hearing crystal ring.
"Love Is a Battlefield" is another example.
Perfection. Pat arrived and gave us non-stop rock and we ate it UP. I was second row at Uptown theatre KCMO when she unloaded on us performing songs from the 'In the heat of the night & Crimes of Passion' albums.. ending the night with 'Hell is for children'. In my 60's now and a lifetime fan.
Hello Vocalyst. If you want to hear Pat Benatar in a more classical/musical theatre style I recommend the songs " Don't Let It Show" and "Wuthering Heights".
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Perhaps my all-time favorite from Pat!
You mentioned at one point you weren't sure if something she did (a lean) was intentional. I'm no singer let alone coach, but am pretty sure *everything* she did was intentional. She was very much like Floor...just a lot earlier. From what I've read, her mom was a coloratura soprano and Pat was indeed following in those footsteps for quite a while. Real training there...
Such a powerful voice.
Those couple measures before the choruses always sound so amazing. I'll always love this song.
Let’s do Hell Is For Children. I’m pretty sure Pat and Neil must have known my circumstances when I was a child. Pat sang that song for me, and for all the others in similar situations. The first time I heard He’ll Is For Children I was blown away, and devastated all at once. I’m 56 years old and it still brings me to tears when I hear it. I saw her live and I cried my eyes out.
I confess I was nuts about this gorgeous and talented lady many moons ago. Watching this reminds me why, she is a great and charismatic artist.😊
This specific show introduce me to her music and to rock music in 1983. The best concert ever!
I have seen pat a few times lady rocks
Pat Benatar has such an incredible Stage Presence when she performs and it develops such Power in her execution! And her voice is so clear and so crisp that she really draws her audience into the melody she's singing! Truly unfortunate that the 'Hall of Fame' took so long to recognize her amazing Talent...
I love Pat Benatar! Her voice is a work of art.
My POWER girl! Great singer! Been to every show she ever did near me. Thanks for your big smiles while reacting, I matched you!
Pat heard other woman Rock singers in the early 70's and thought. " I can do that too!" She was right!😅❤
Pat is a once in a lifetime singer no one can ever be as good as her . Another good singer is belinda carlisle
I saw her a few years ago like 2012 or so. She sounded just as good.
Somewhere on RUclips is a live performance of a much older Pat Benatar and Martina McBride doing a duet of Independence Day and Pat absolutely kills it.
Oh my word - that would be amazing! Thanks for the info.
Thank you for this breakdown. Pat Benatar is truly the real deal and it’s nice to see that she’s still appreciated for her incredible voice and range.
Any wonder why she is (still) my favorite singer ???
I would love to see a breakdown of Promises in the Dark by Pat Benatar...she is amazing!
Listen to her work on the two earlier albums, In the Heat of the Night and Crimes of Passion. "We Live For Love" on In the Heat of the Night is an excellent example of her pure high soprano on those early albums. I feel you can hear the toll the 'rock voice' took on that high range over the years (and yet her work continued to be so amazing!) in how the emphasis moved to the range you hear on "Shadows of the Night". Also listen to "Wuthering Heights" on the Crimes of Passion album -- beautiful bell tone on the high notes in the almost a capella beginning of the song (so good!), and running up and down the range so effortlessly. She was one of the first performers I just couldn't wait for more from.
I saw her on this tour, a couple of nights before this was recorded. Great show, start to finish. It was pared down to 8 songs, and released as the "Live From Earth" album in late 1983.
Graet reaction, one of the best female rockers in the class with Anne Wilson, and others from that era.
Hard believe this top female rocker started out as a opera singer.
Really like your review of Pat Benatar. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her live, but thank you for your breakdown of why she’s so brilliant.
I was hoping you'd go with this performance. Heart stopping!
One of my favorites💖
Ann Wilson and Pat Benatar could rule the rock world...
Also from this concert is "We Live For Love". This song (among many) truly showcases her classical training.
Rock star.!! She looks awesome on stage
It’s probably in the comments but I believe she is a classically trained opera singer. I think I read that somewhere back in the day?
Love Pat. Huge part of my 80s life.
Great great great analysis of Pat and her performance!
I just realized that she has the same effortlessness of her voice that Donna Summer had.
Thank you!!!
There is a cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying" on RUclips which is a demo from the pre-first album work. You can really hear her classic training on that track.
I was at this tour in Dallas TX 1985; awesome experience.
Honestly your reactions should be the studio versions of the songs, so that the crowd noise doesn’t drown her out.
Yes. Shes so powerful and also nuanced right? She also will sort of crop off ends of words at the right moments, and sustain other times. And those breathy "tail-ups" at other times?
And now the hands of time are standing still midnight angel won't you say you will ...... Maybe the most powerful lyric sung by a female in the 80s
The incomparable PAT BENATAR! Jeez, I love this woman!
great reaction. nice to see someone who really understands nuance and vocal expertise.
Alison Pill sang part of this song in an episode of Star Trek: Picard.
I thought it was really cool too
Listen to Wuthering Heights. You Better Run. And from this live concert, Fight it Out...incredible vocals and range.
I was at that concert! It was absolutely amazing!
pat is a 5ft. tall
powerhouse. and spider is no joke.
Opera trained, so she always knew how she was singing. Classy.
