If anyone knew the studio there wouldn't even be a question about lip-syncing. But she insists on doing Live versions and winds up looking kinda foolish even to suggest it.
Pat Benatar is one of the best original female rockers!! The other one is Ann Wilson (HEART). Their voices are still golden, and they're still rocking the crowds!!
There is no lip syncing allowed on Austin City Limits. It was one of the greatest shows of our time for many, many years and it's always intimate, cozy and personal. But no lip syncing.
Neil Geraldo is her husband and guitarist. He was also in Rick Derringer's band famous for the song Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo. Pat has a wonderful voice. Check out her song "Hell is For Children".
She's not lip syncing. The song is originally sung in a higher range. I am a Metal vocalist still at 54 and the first thing to go is the higher register. Your esophagus begins to collapse as you get older, and vocal folds wear down. She is doing a tremendous job with her vocal and breath control. A true professional vocalist, such as Pat, knows how to manipulate their voice to adjust for father time.
Actually it's 4 times. Shes won the Grammy 4 times been nominated 9 times. She has won 3 American Music Awards. She now has been estimated to have sold over 100M records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Historical contributions - First female artist ever played on MTV. First female artist to sell out the Madison Square Garden. At 71 she still is touring the world with her band and what can you say shes hardcore music royalty. Fact - Pat Benatar is the best selling female rock artist of all time.(Billboard Magazine).
Pat Benetar would NEVER lip sing, she’s a true artist, along with her husband… NO Steve Martin! Also, Pat’s mother was an opera singer before she was born & Pat was classically trained as an opera singer herself. She Rocks! ❤
Correct me if wrong but I thought her mom was a professional opera singer. So it ran in her family but yeah Pat went rock. And I’m glad she did. Enjoyed her thru the decades.
From what I hear, no on the lip sync. She can still belt it out, but I can hear that she doesn't have the same strength behind it. But 30 years is a long time to keep that kind of power. She sounds phenomenal.
Yes, time gets us all, but her reinterpretation to get the most of what's left of her voice is still gorgeous. Man the power she had and the high notes she could hit in her prime. I graduated from HS in 1983, and she was all over the radio and my album collection. Huge fan.
The guy on the piano & guitar is Neil "Spyder" Giraldo (GIH ral DOH), her husband. They're one of rock's greatest couples. Married 41+ years & not a whisper of scandal ever.
I had a crush on Pat Benetar back in the early 80s and had a full-length poster of her in my US Marine Corps barracks room. My wife and I basically got together because of her music. Her voice is more raspy than it once was and it is obvious that she is singing it in a lower key than the original recording. But, considering her age, she does a great job. I am 66 and still singing gospel music, but can no longer reach those high notes that I used to.
Austin City Limits is a historic venue although I think it's a newer building than the one SRV played in the 80's. But I imagine it's a tough ticket to get and filled with knowledgeable music folks close to the stage. No way you're getting away with any music shenanigans there.
100 percent no lip syncing just talented kick ass rock and roll been listening to them for40 years and they're still going strong .very inspiring we all can only hope we look that good and have that much energy in our 70s God bless.
The kicker on her voice is she said in an interview she never warms up. She just comes out and sings. She recognized how rare it is that someone can do that.
Neil (aka Spyder) is known for his guitar playing, but also occasionally plays piano. On most of their songs Pat writes the lyrics and Spyder then writes the music to fit. (Pat refused to go into the Rock hall of fame for years until they voted them in as a duo...which they have always been. ) Her greatness goes beyond music 🙂
Girl, Pat would never lip sync. She makes it a point to tell everyone before she starts her concerts, "There's no track, it's all me." I've been listening to her for 40 years.
I’ve had the pleasure to see them during sound checks a bunch of times. Last one was in September I can guarantee she is not Lip-synching or auto tuned.❤ I love that you love their love story. It is amazing. She said the secret is keeping the business and personal separate.💚
I'm a 64 year old guitarist. You are spot on about you saying, "people stay youthful playing music"!!!!!! When I jam on my guitar. I feel 25 years old again!!!!!!!
Neil Geraldo is an awesome lead guitarist and multi-instrumentalist! The song starts out slow in the studio as well. I agree about their energy. I just passed up seeing a classic act because they have slowed and mellowed too much for my memory. But I would go see Pat and Neil in a heartbeat!!!
It's unusual to see a female singer reach this age and still be singing this well. Female voices change much more than male voices do as we age. There are many male singers performing well into their 80's but few females.
She's an Icon!! This was fantastic, an unbelievable rendition of their original! But to get the full Par Benatar experience? Listen to the original track! She was, an is, FENOMINAL!! And any other tracks you come across.
Pat Benatar was a big part of the music catalog of my high school years. Besides all of the obvious great acts of the 60s, 70s and 80s, we had the greatest female voices such as Pat, Anne Wilson, Diana Ross, Linda Ronstadt, Pati Labelle, Donna Summer, Karen Carpenter, Chaka Kahn just to name a few.
I believe that Austin City doesn't allow lip sychning. Anyway, Pat was definitely not lip sychning bc she ad libbed some of the high notes of the studio version. Love your channel, Britt! ❤
Just watched the video of these. IMHO as a performing musician. She isn't lip-synching, on the words that look like she is she isn't holding the mic close to her mouth, so the broadcast version overdubbed those parts.
I gotta agree she does seem like a class act. I had the biggest crush on her back when they first hit the charts. She's aged well. Also, you seem like a very class act yourself young lady. Sincerely.
Neil Giraldo...Jur (as in jury)...all...dough. AKA Spider. If you have the curiosity, she recorded a blues album called True Love and every song is fantastic. So Long is my fave.
Rumor has it, she was booed off the stage at amateur night in the mid-70s for signing opera. She ran back to the dressing room in tears, ripped up her clothes, put on makeup, and went back out and sang rock.
When I was in high school I wanted to be Pat so bad. Saw her in concert in 1983 and her concert as kick ass. Excellent voice. The recording starts off a ballad then rocks out. Neil is an excellent guitarist!!
The amount of respect I have for her refusing to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame without her husband Neil has no bounds. She was already huge in my mind but that steadfast devotion to her bandmate, soulmate, to tell them to F-OFF, that they're a package deal... Proved she is a Goddess of Rock & Roll. Without her & Neil, they lose all credibility.
She’s not lip syncing. As good as her voice sounds now, go back and listen to the original recordings. The power and clarity of her voice back then will blow you away.
Pat and Neil never got into the party scene of drugs and alcohol. The video is off because Austin City Limits is recorded live. Pat's voice has aged quite well just like Ann Wilson of Heart.
Pat Beneath is a force to be reckoned with! She has massive hits and an incredible vocal range. I grew up watching her music videos on MTV. I only remember her with short dark hair and tight clothes! It's amazing seeing her like this. You definitely need to check out her music videos or listen to her back then. She was right up there with the best female singers in her time. I'm really bummed and puzzled that she does not show up on these reactions more often. Thanks! Great memories...
Would love to see you react to an old show called Crossroads where they had country and rock singers perform together, and trade off on each other's songs. Pat was paired with Martina McBride, two epic voices. They started with this, but the really cool one was Martina's single Independence Day (written by Gretchen Peters). Martina looked like such a fan girl when Pat took over the chorus.
Steve Martin in the rain! When I saw them I’m in concert a few years ago, Pat said they had 14 songs they always have to play each show or there was hell to pay the next day on Facebook. Reluctantly, they then did “Hell is for Children”. Imagine having to sing that at 68.
So glad you discovered Pat Benetar. I had a crush on her all through middle school and high school. Not only gorgeous, but she has one of the most powerful, kick-ass voices ever! Now you have to react to "Hell is for Children."
Mad respect to Pat Benatar, although eligible for Rock N Roll Hall of Fame for a few dozen years, she insisted her rock guitarist collaborator of a husband could be inducted along side her, given his contributions to their music. Finally, they were allowed to go in together a few years ago.
that’s david foster on piano. one of the greatest music producers in history. he gave us Celine and a whole bunch of Streisand we have stuck in our memories. neil is the guitarslinger
Hi kittystwink...just a friendly correction. That is NOT David Foster on piano. That IS in fact Neil Geraldo, her husband. He plays both Guitar and Piano.
I heard that they took time away from performing to raise their kids. Sounds like they have found the way to keep a relationship and a family together for the long haul. They have my respect personally and professionally! They've still got it!
One of my first and only teen crushes. Even when we were 15 in the early 80s, we knew Pat was already with Neil. The fact that they are still doing what they have always done is beautiful. I remember when this song came out. It was a dip into the more pop side, which I was not a fan of. But the raw openness of the song was so engaging that it hit hard. Always loved this album
I saw her in concert back in 1983 at the PNE Coliseum in Vancouver. Great show, and she had a presence on stage that few performers have. She had another young artist open for her who rocks. His name is Billy Squire, and he had hits like "The Stroke" My Kind of Lover" Rock Me Tonite".

When she was inducted in the RNR Hall of Fame, her husband/guitar/piano player Spyder (Neil Giraldo) was inducted with her because he was so instrumental in her career.

I dont agree all the time with you but thats what makes it good, to hear a different perspective. You are engaging and thoughtful and keep up the excellent reactions.
She's 100% not lip syncing. I've been to several of their shows she would never. That's her live voice at 71!!!!
💯
There are a number of differences in what she's singing, from the original
Right! Pat is a beast on vocals, and she has too much talent & integrity to disrespect her craft by lip-syncing!
If anyone knew the studio there wouldn't even be a question about lip-syncing. But she insists on doing Live versions and winds up looking kinda foolish even to suggest it.
They are actual musicians, not marionettes.
Pat Benatar is one of the best original female rockers!! The other one is Ann Wilson (HEART). Their voices are still golden, and they're still rocking the crowds!!
the two best right there
Pat and Ann are my favorite of all time female rock voices.
Don't forget about Stevie Nicks.
Or the Runaways
Bonnie Raitt!
There is no lip syncing allowed on Austin City Limits. It was one of the greatest shows of our time for many, many years and it's always intimate, cozy and personal. But no lip syncing.
The guitar player is her hubbie. They’ve been together all this time. How awesome is that! Thanks for doing more Pat. 🤟🏼
Neil Geraldo is her husband and guitarist. He was also in Rick Derringer's band famous for the song Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo. Pat has a wonderful voice. Check out her song "Hell is For Children".

For sure. Her voice is still great but it sounds old and worn, she's not hiding that so i don't see the point of lip syncing.
Austin City Limits would never do lip syncing, nor would Pat. The audio not matching video issue is a long, long time internet issue.
Pat is a 3 time female rock vocalist of the year and well deserved!!!!!!
I respect old Pat Benetar a lot more than I respect old Madonna.
100%!
Who respects Madonna?
Absolutely.
Pat was always much better than Madonna.
Hell to the yeah!!!
Pat Benetar would NEVER lip sing, she’s a true artist, along with her husband… NO Steve Martin! Also, Pat’s mother was an opera singer before she was born & Pat was classically trained as an opera singer herself. She Rocks! ❤
She was classically trained to be an opera singer but she went the opposite way to become a rock star, and rock she did.
Correct me if wrong but I thought her mom was a professional opera singer. So it ran in her family but yeah Pat went rock. And I’m glad she did. Enjoyed her thru the decades.
Listen to her version of Kate Bush's 'Wuthering Heights.'
@@davidvant1047Pat warms up singing Aria's
@@davidvant1047 yes, her mom was also an opera singer which is where Pat learned it.

Austin City Limits would never allow lip syncing...been to quite a few shows and it wouldn't be tolerated
Um, 40 years and change. The song was released in 1981.
40 plus years. She's lost a little power and maybe a bit of her range, but for God's sake She's 71!
Yes, time gets us all, but her reinterpretation to get the most of what's left of her voice is still gorgeous. Man the power she had and the high notes she could hit in her prime. I graduated from HS in 1983, and she was all over the radio and my album collection. Huge fan.
Pat was a pioneer, strong singer and a great performer. So glad to hear of her long term relationship.

This version is pretty faithful to album version and probably not lip synced - Austin City Limits is known for being live.

Austin City Limits is 100% live by mandate.
She was originally trained as an opera singer.
Love this woman... she IS and always has been a CLASS ACT.
Pat Benatar would NEVER lip sync.
A ballad, Britt said. Then it hit. Yes, the original started that way. She doesn’t have her original range but I love her singing and writing still.
Agreed, 100% NOT lip syncing. They both are a class act and she is a phenomenal singer.
100 percent no lip syncing just talented kick ass rock and roll been listening to them for40 years and they're still going strong .very inspiring we all can only hope we look that good and have that much energy in our 70s God bless.

This is the way the song goes, and absolutely she is not lip syncing.
Not that she can't now, but in her youth, she could blow. Classically trained i believe too
Neil Geraldo is an awesome lead guitarist and multi-instrumentalist! The song starts out slow in the studio as well. I agree about their energy. I just passed up seeing a classic act because they have slowed and mellowed too much for my memory. But I would go see Pat and Neil in a heartbeat!!!
pat and Neil were inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame in 2022 i was there.
Great reaction. The man at the piano is her husband. He mostly plays guitar. His last name is pronounced as ja-raldo.
I think one of her music videos was the second video played on the MTV channel.
Yep. “You Better Run”.
She is true to the music! No lip syncing! No auto tune! Just perfection from a period of time never to be repeated !
I LOVED PB in high-school and blasted her music in my car. Great singer
She may be the reason MTV truly was fire those first two years. Their videos rocked and she had a helluva lot of stage presence.
She was the second song ever played on MTV (after "TV killed the radio star")

She is a classically trained singer. So much voice from such a small frame. I followed her back was starting out.
My favourite of her songs. Ty!
How can anyone age singing songs like this?? YES, the original version starts out slow like she did here....but then BLOWS YOU AWAY!!!

They are amazing. I went back and watched the original and wow. I don't think it was lip synced. But as far as aging gracefully, they are life goals.

My god do I love Pat Benatar ! ❤
This is cool, but you need to listen to the original studio version (the video is good). Her power and range in her prime was stunning.
It's live no doubt.
Saw Pat twice when she was young and so impressed with her voice! Her power was so amazing! She is still a class act.
If I remember right, I believe she's opera trained. So she should know how to treat her voice.
An absolute rocker with a tremendous set of pipes and a crystal clear voice, and a long list of hits.
The best rocking lady!
My favorite female artist Rock On Pat.
Pat and Neil are wonderful. From everything I've ever seen they are an admirable couple.
Love Pat Benenatar. My favorite female singer of all times.
She's really singing here. Not lip synching (sp?)...
The video is off she is singing live.
She is a legend!!!
In her youth Pat had one of the most stunning voices in rock history. Could growl and snarl but also could hit ethereal high notes. Opera-trained - like 3.5-4 octaves.
You gotta listen to the early versions of this song when her voice was at it's peak. The power she exuded was out of this world !!!
Pat Benatar rocks!!!
Benatar is amazing! I think this is love, not pre recorded and lip synced, as she doesn't hit the high notes she did in the original recording and earlier live events. Even so she's without peer!
She always calls Neil "Spider."
And he calls her Patricia
Saw them in concert in 2022 they were absolutely awesome. Age has nothing on either of them.
i love Pat. i exclusively looked for your reaction to this song. love you both!
Pat was one of the first female rockers...and she can still do it! I had the good fortune to see her perform live at the beginning of her career (mid-70s)--as the singer for a small local band (Coxon's Army) in Richmond, VA.
I saw her at the County fair two years ago, and she sounded amazing!
When she was inducted in the RNR Hall of Fame, her husband/guitar/piano player Spyder (Neil Giraldo) was inducted with her because he was so instrumental in her career.

Pat Benatar was my first concert! This was 1981...wow I'm old, but I'm so glad I experienced the music I did exactly when I did.
