Ann Wilson is the greatest female rock singer ever without a doubt, maybe the unqualified best. Vocal analysts used to say (magazines back in the 70s) that she'd never be able to keep it up. She's now in her 70s and still beltin' out those high notes and knockin' 'em dead at live performances. This TV thing isn't her strongest performance, and even so it just blows me away. No autotune. No pre-recorded tracks. No BS.

Fil is always so polite when he says "let's go back to 1977" (or whenever). For those of us who were teens in the late 70's that is a nice way of saying "let's go back into the mists of time to the ancient days '" 🤣😂🤣

If you rummage around here on RUclips, you’ll find that video of ‘Stairway’ at the Kennedy Center Honors Led Zeppelin is a real thing. It’s all over the place, tons of reaction videos, etc. I watch it regularly. Probably one of the best done covers EVER. The band, orchestra, full choir - an amazing production! Jimmy Page’s obvious enjoyment is so fun, & Robert Plant - ever the curmudgeon - takes a while to warm up, but he’s 100% sold by the end. Pure euphoria that night in that building. Thank god we average folks have the video!

She always made certain to record in the keys that matched her voice. As she grew older, despite all the damaging influences of the 70s and 80s, Ann has been able to predominantly not have to lower the key as many rock legends have to do with age. There may not be as much acrobatics as the past, but the tone, pitch and range is still, amazingly top of the class. I’ve been able to see her live in five decades, and Ann always delivers!

1985 I went to visit a friend and he had a visitor. My friend had to leave shortly after I arrived but didn't think he'd be long and asked me to wait. I waited about two hours before I left. His friend and I chatted quite a while, but I mainly listened. His told some grandiose stories and I was thinking he needs to wake up in the same world every day. He also mentioned that people were always trying to touch him or grab a souvenir. I assured him he had no worries. Before I left he said he enjoyed conversation and asked if I'd like to go see a Heart concert. He said he tickets, back stage passes and invite to the party after. I gave him an excuse because that was only half true. Later I saw my friend and I mentioned to him that his friend told some wild stories and must think he's a rock star. My friend laughed and told me it Frank Beard the drummer for ZZ TOP. I said, so the Heart concert was real, and he says yeah. I said, well be.

They were huge in Canada. Won the Juno award( Canada's equivalent to the Grammys) for group of the Year for 1976..having recorded their Dreamboat Annie album at Mushroom in Vancouver Canada, Canada assumed they were a Canadian group. Heart quietly accepted the award with a smile and it wasn't discovered until later that they were actually Seattle based. Lol. They kept the award because at the time they were living in Canada. I’ve never understood the mentality of a great rhythm guitar player and their sometimes desire to be a lead player. Like Pete Townsend, he’s a tremendous rhythm guitarist but just a lower than average lead player and in the late 70’s and 80’s he had all kinds of teachers trying to make him something he’s not. Nancy is the perfect example of what my guitar teachers taught me and what I’ve taught all of my students and that’s “a great rhythm guitarist can make an average lead player sound amazing but a poor rhythm guitarist couldn’t make Jimi Hendrix sound good” if you’ve been blessed to be a rhythm guitarist then embrace it and be the best guitarist you can be. The Edge is not a great lead guitarist but the man can play in other dimensions when he’s playing rhythm. “Serve the song not the ego” and great video as always my friend!

If "our time” includes current guitarists, Nita Strauss should be mentioned. She has some mad playing skills. I’m not particularly fond of the music she plays, but I saw her playing live when she opened for Wolf Van Halen. She can really play.
Lzzy Hale can both sing and play guitar. She’s probably my second favorite female vocalist, after Ann Wilson.
The Wilson sisters set a high bar in musical talent.
Addit: I think Nancy gets appreciated by many people in the music world. She was invited to play for the Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts.

I saw Nancy driving down the highway in Dallas right beside our truck as we were going to work. Her license plate said NANCYW. She knew I recognized her and smiled and waved at me. Her hair was red instead of blonde.

@ycart tosey I`ve seen that movie. I don`t remember any scene with Nancy in it. Too much weed I guess. Heart was recording an album in Dallas in 1985 when I saw her if I remember correctly. She was in a red Porche I think. I met Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother that year at one of his brother`s shows and saw Pantera play in a local bar too.

Ann Wilson. THE most powerful female vocalist on the planet! That woman’s vocals have ALWAYS given me goosebumps (the good ones)! I saw ‘em live at a concert in Little Rock Arkansas back in the late ‘80s at the old Barton Coliseum. Have been a big Heart fan since ‘75/‘76, thereabouts.
Thanks Fil, for posting this great Heart performance and your experienced, thoughtful, always interesting analysis. GOOD STUFF!

Great breakdown Fil!..Heart can't be underrated (no one does ...because they are all so damned sensational) or overrated (because they are all so damned sensational)... Just one of the most awesome rock bands of our time. And that time is still going I guess. So, lets say of all time. I still listen to them and watch them when I can. Wish I could have seen them live. What a band.

I didn't really notice Heart til their resurgence in the 80's when I was in my teens. But once they got me I went back and bought all their work. They've been one of my all time favorites ever since! I only got to see them live once like 15 years ago. You'd think they would be way past their prime by now, but that's totally not true. They still deliver!

I was at the concert in S'port, LA July 4th 1977. To be truthful most of us were just there for the party. I knew who Heart was from the album a friend had, and FM radio. But when Nancy started the intro to Barracuda, I stood in awed silence, everyone else went wild.

Nobody does it better than Heart !! Such a true Rock band of their generation and what an illustrious career they have had. The highlight for me was their Stairway To Heaven tribute to Led Zeppelin which was massively impressive beyond anyone's imagination! Thank you for all of your input into this video - I never knew half of what their career was like if it were not for you shining your spotlight on the details of it all.

  • @EchoesDaBear

Saw them back on 2013 (wife surprised me with tickets for our 10th anniversary!!), they were AMAZING! Nancy actually had to re-start the beginning of this song, she messed up (just bumbled a few notes), but it really didn't matter. All she said was "I'm not as young as I used to be, I sometimes trip over my fingers" (or something like that) Anyone who knows music, and especially finger pick style guitar, knows, this intro is difficult as hell, so it showed a 'human' aspect to Nancy, but endearing. She picked it up again, and nailed it - spot on (and she prolonged the groove a bit like she did here) - then did her stratospheric kick when the main 'ROCKIN' melody started. Ann, as usual, was etheric with your vocals! She truly is a powerhouse - no matter at what age or stage in their career!
As an added bonus that night, the opening band was The Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience!!! (I didn't know this prior, so I was confused as to why half the crowd was wearing Zeppelin shirts!) - well talk about a treat! An opening of Zep tracks, then Heart, whom ended their setlist with 6 (count them 6) Zeppelin covers (with Bonham on drums) - playing Battle Of Evermore (Nancy on mandolin, Ann on acoustic), Song Remains the Same, Rain Song, Immigrant Song (HOLY SH!T on the vocals!), Kashmir (!!) & Stairway. Ann was hitting notes that Robert Plant couldn't dream to hit anymore. What a night!
    Great reaction vid Fil!

Three phenominal guitarist's, a drummer that could crumble mountains, a bass player that could cause volcanic eruptions, and a singer who's voice could bring down the skies...in just one word...HEART! Nancy Wilson is just so ignored, not for just being a great female guitarist, but as a great guitarist, no matter the gender! As you said, both are so talented! And the rest of the band is extremely talented as well! I personally think that this song is their best of any of their songs, sonically. Anne's voice, and Nancy's playing are the center of every Heart song. Without the both of them, it just isn't Heart. Ann has a vocal range and power that is mind boggling, and Nancy is just so talented on the guitar, no matter if it is acoustic or electric, six or 12 strings, Mandolin, or banjo. She can play it, and Ann can sing it. I swear she has lungs the size of the Goodyear Blimp! I can never get enough of these classy ladies. They have never dissapointed in their performances. Thank you for doing this Fil! Rock on!

For all old rockers we need to support Fil and the other Wings of Pegasus. We get so little respect from younger people and it’s wonderful that he sees the same things we do, in so many different genres. It bridges the gap in our generations. Buy a t-shirt, get their albums, become a Patreon supporter. Let Fil and his rockers know how much we appreciate his posts. Our favorites are going to be leaving us and it’s going to be people like Fil that keep our memories alive. Thank you Wings. I wear my shirt in The States proudly.

Thanks for this, Fil! Love your take on Heart and Ann singing dry into the SM57. I've been listening to Heart since they hit the scene out of my hometown of Bellevue, WA USA back in the seventies. I'm not sure one can really rank singers, but I will say I've never heard Ann sing (thousands of times recorded and 5 times live) without a resulting chill down my spine and usually some awestruck watering of the eyes. This entire band was truly great, but Ann's voice and delivery has stood out for its ability to make me instantly feel the full spectrum of human emotion...all while having a rockin' good time. I'm hopelessly biased, but it's hard to top that kind of musical impact. Cheers!

I loved Heart back in the early days! I was blessed to live in Vancouver at the time and that's where the band had their roots. Most members were from the Seattle area but they chose to stay north of the border for some reason. Regardless, we were treated to free concerts in the public parks, the band playing at the local roller skating rink, and even one magical night when Heart was the band playing our high school dance. Their sound back then was as original as they could get away with - lots of very Led Zeppelin-styled songs or standards done in the unique Heart manner. Ann Wilson has to heard live to really appreciate the tones and power her voice possesses. As far as selling sex is concerned, you're spot on, Fil. While both Ann and Nancy garnered more than a few google eyes from the boys, it was always their music that really enthralled us. When Dreamboat Annie came out, it was so cool to watch the group on the way to the top. The last time I saw them was at a big outdoor show in August 1978 as headliners on a bill that included Little River Band (glorious five part harmonies!) and Bob Welch, riding high with two major hits after leaving Fleetwood Mac. We were the first to hear the new songs off of the not yet released Dog And Butterfly. Heart ruled the day and it was an amazing show with a warm Summer breeze blowing in off the ocean as the band owned the thousands who'd waited all day for the "hometown" kids made good.
