And yeah, the drummer in this was Jason, Bonzo's son. That's why he and all the members of the choir are wearing bowler hats, as a nod to his dad. I think many people watch this and are so caught up in the feeling and emotion of the performance that by the time Ann belts out the last word "Roll" they miss how absolutely crazy she nailed that note! The choice of arrangement with the orchestra and choir, while maintaining most or the original aspects of the song is part of the brilliance of it. Zeppelin is the biggest influence on Heart and they do Zep songs in their shows but THIS was special.

yes that was John's son - Jason Bonham
fun fact, i heard somewhere that back in the day, Led Zeppelin had just played a show somewhere. After the show someone told them that there was a band playing a gig at a local bar. They decided to go down to check it out and that band that was playing was Heart. Heart got their start as a Led Zeppelin cover band so this performance was really a full circle moment and with Jason Bonham on the drums wearing a hat like his dad always did, Jimmy Page counting the notes during the solo as well as their reactions when the choir came on - this is a perfect performance on every front. Also, apparently they didn't know Jason would be playing that night at the Kennedy so that's why they were so happy and surprised.

This tribute is in the running for the absolute best moment in rock history. Dieties, audience and performers are one, with each lift in the music ascending higher, finding the sweetest spot in the human soul, everyone radiating to everyone else "yes, this is it, this perfection is real." What seals the deal is if this much spirit and energy was put into any other song, the song would feel small, too weak, not up to the moment. Instead this performance rises and expands, never even close to limiting the ecstasy of the moment. If JP, RP & JPJ ever asked "what do our lives mean?" they got their answer in full this night. You can see it on their faces.

I saw an interview with Ann Wilson where she said they only practiced this number once, the night before, on stage. And it didn’t go well. They knew they only had one chance to get it right, and they totally blew this one away. I can’t imagine the pressure they were under, knowing the world (and Led Zeppelin!) was watching! Great job. Legendary! Everything about this is iconic.

It is forever her song to me now...I sat in my little motel room singing this to myself over and over and over...my sister WAS the lady buying a stairway to heaven...or so she seemed to believe in life...and now she was headed there, full steam. I adore this...Ann and Nancy and Jason, John's son, playing after his father died, and Robert watching with tears welling up...well, there's nothing like this recording in the history of rock n roll!!!
