Funny that you kept saying "the marriage between her voice and the guitar" since she is literally married to the guitar player, still to this day. And yes, this song launched her and her band's career and was a huge hit right out of the gate, and she continued to dominate the charts throughout the 80's.

Neil Geraldo doesnt get nearly the credit he deserves. Within the industry i know he is highly regarded but i dont think music fans know how good he is.

Benatar and Chrissy Hines did have impact and provided a a visual model of strong women in rock once MTV became a thing. Their videos were uncompromising.
For a similar impact in the 90s, it would be great to have you review "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morrissette. It's alternative rock, but she is another who really crashed through barriers and expectations as she transformed from a teenaged pop star to the "Queen of Alternative Rock" as some call her.
Pat should have already been in the hall of fame. She is personification of the hard rocking firecracker. She, Blondie and Joan Jett are icons of the female Rockers who broke the industry. They weren't only hard rocking but they were sexy as hell and every teenage boys dream girls.

Pat is a formally trained opera singer (as a Coloratura ). Her cover of the Kate Bush song *"Wuthering Heights"* definitely shows off her operatic pipes. She also had an interest in musical theatre at an early age.

She’s an amazing talent - I JUST saw Pat perform Wuthering Heights which was absolutely awesome! What a treat. I’m glad you mentioned that she’s classically trained - I find that to be SO cool & you can tell because her voice is so perfectly tuned to whatever she’s singing. It’s just unbelievably beautiful & always fabulous, whatever she’s singing.

Myron seems like he was the inspiration for Animal from the Muppets rock band. He was a wild performer.
Myron was not the original drummer. Glen Alexander Hamilton was the drummer on their debut, But when it came to live performances, he did not fit well with the band.

Back in 1982 after working a grave yard shift all night long doing physical labor. without any sleep I got in a car with some friends and drove a long distance to an outdoor music festival called the US Festival, with bands playing all afternoon and through the night, and the headliners were Tom Petty and Pat Benatar, after watching many bands for many hours I was totally worn out tired. and I still had to watch two more bands. Tom Petty came out and did his set. and even though I really like Tom Petty, I I could barely stand on my feet and had allot of trouble making it through his set, but a little bit later Pat Benatar came out and went into her set, and instantly I was awake and into it. the band was full of energy, great guitar work and the drummer was an entertaining drummer on top of his game. and Pat was Pat. it was a great show, and then we drove home and I collapsed with exhaustion.
Yeah.....just the US Festival. One of the biggest gigs in history. Haha. Wow I listened to it on the radio live broadcast and wish I was able to go, but being only 15 I couldn't find a way. Awesome you were there.

I saw Benatar in concert in 1981 when I was a teenager. She played with Billy Squier and they both put on an absolutely amazing show. Her voice was fantastic live.

The craziest thing about Pat is she's the size of the pencil on my table, but she has the voice of a cannon. I don't even know where that sound comes from.
I was a 13yr old black female when this song came out and it blew me and the rest of the world away.... Pat Benatar was the Beyoncé back in the day as far a strong female rock vocalist.....I’m a huge huge fan of her music ...she definitively made a pathway for singers you hear today (even though singers today can’t hold a candle to Pat’s vocal agility)...🤘🏾🤘🏾🎈🌺

PatBenatar is a classically trained singer. Her voice is perfect for her style of Rock and Roll strong. Definitely one of the very best Female Rock and Roll Super Stars. Her music is so good that it holds up today. You had to be really good to be in a male-dominated industry in those days. HARD ROCK BABY.😎

"What a fuckn rockstar!" Hell yeah! This came out when I was in 7th grade and it changed my whole life. I LOVED rock & roll, but a woman singing this?? I had been playing guitar for a couple years but this made me want to be a rock star. I learned every single single Pat Benatar song forward and backward. Neil Giraldo shaped my playing.
My former co-worker used to own a studio where Pat Benatar recorded one of her albums. She said that Pat Benatar was the nicest artist she ever dealt with. Down to Earth, super friendly and would make food for the band/crew.
I never stop hearing positive stories about her. And for many of us it woulda been a "heartbreaker" to hear otherwise. She is the person we hoped she was. What you got from her was an honest reflection of who she is. She never broke our hearts.

Yep, she blew the doors down with this tune. Late 70's Heart were still kicking, but lost a little of their edge and female hard rockers were in short supply. Enter Pat.

Pat Benetar is a classically trained mezzo-soprano. That"s why she has such a powerful voice with so much range.
For a change of pace, give "Love Is A Battlefield" a listen. It's another one of her best songs.

Maybe it's just me, but I love love love the production sound of rock albums from the mid 70s to the mid 80s.
The guitar solo is a prime example of what Ryan said about "simple, but flying with it" the Niel is a tremendous guitarist, but that solo out side of a couple runs is very simple and he just puts so much energy and emotion into it.
She was a breath of fresh air in the early 80's. Incredible voice who can sing operatic notes as easily as gritty rock. We could use another Pat Benatar right now.
Her and Ann Wilson baby. Ann was sort of in a hiatus at this time, and Pat had a bit more edge to her voice. She sounded like she could deck you one.

She was a marvelously operatic singer with her band Coven even as a teenager, and she could also make her vocals as rough and mean as you please. So deliciously sinister-they were the first overtly Satanic band, you know. Almost all of metal culture essentially sprung from this one progressive rock band 🤘
I've seen Pat Benatar live several times, and she still sounds damn good. She may not have the power that she did in her prime, but she still has the passion and range.
Me and my friends were into Rock and Heavy Metal. This album came out and none of us would admit that we loved this album, but we all did...LOL!
HELL YES, SHE DID!! We listened to her non-stop when we were in 5th and 6th grade. It was completely mind-blowing at that age as a young girl. Her and Stevie Nicks. This and Crimes of Passion, which we listened to even more.

Yes, she did take the world by storm, I was 18 in '79 and she blew me away. I believe Heartbreaker was the first. i saw her in concert about '84 and she put on a show with no flash or frills, just damn great singing and guitars. Crowd was dancing and screaming for two hours. Minneapolis. It was amazing. Pat was 4'11"' and about 90 lbs and had a baby backstage waiting for her. It was amazing.

One song that gets overlooked by Pat Benatar is "Everybody Lay Down", which she did later in her career. She belts out that song so hard, I don't know how her voice doesn't give out. Great, great song with some attitude!

100% agree. She is not a female standard of Rock music, she is a standard of Rock music period. I saw her open up for Robert Plant in '88 on the Now and Zen tour and she blew them off the stage. She , and her killer band were tremendous.

The guitarist coming into the band is what made them blow up so quick. Her and Neil had chemistry from day one. You can hear it in how they flow together, and are still doing it to this day.

I am so glad you are discovering one of the greatest voices in rock. She has no match as far as I'm concerned. She now opens the door for so many contemporary singers, and they owe her a hell of a debt. I grew up listening to Pat Benatar and many others of her generation back then. I was a teenager during the 80s, so I'm thankful I could experience all of this growing up. I'm so glad you are discovering what actual singing is and what true rock and roll is keep it up. Promises in the dark is another one of my all-time favorites of hers. I think it shows her vocal range probably the best.
I saw her in person....she was awesome every song and time..., my favorite song is "Promises in the dark".
That guitar bridge part is so hard to nail down. And then the breakdowns! And Pat's scream leading into the awesome one-note solo is just great! And that solo lures you in and then just takes over.
Seems like Neil did that a lot...beginning guitar solos on the note that Pat would hit at the end of a lyric. Love it.

Neil is so underrated. Just a truly amazing musician. Great guitarist. I've seen Pat and Neil in concert twice. Amazing stuff.

I have loved Pat Benatar since I was 6 yrs old. I finally saw her live in my late 20's and she was amazing!!!

Cleanest notes, most powerful female vocalist in Rock who had more sustain in her notes than most entire bands could ever wish to have. Her abilities in utilizing so many different singing techniques is the equivalent to Pat Benatar was to singing like Eddie Van Halen was to the lead guitar. She is the gold standard for any upcoming female singer in Rock, no equal.
Pat Benatar was trained vocally at Julliard school of Music.. She can sing ! She played my place twice, she is very tiny.
Heartbreaker was the song that our local skating rink would play when we would speed skate! This was back in the early 80’s! Wow!

Pat can sing blues, cabaret, jazz, rock, and opera. She was the QUEEN of rock from about '78 right on thru the 80s. Check out "Invincible". Her husband, Neil Geraldo, who jams on many of her songs, is a vastly under-appreciated guitarist.
This song and 'Hell is for Children' are both on my setlist, great tunes to play live.

Back in the day when this song came out many people got speeding tickets rocking out to this song. I remember when I was a child first hearing Pat I was like "Holy %#@*" and you got to realize She is a tiny Woman with this huge voice belting out.

I can't believe this song only made it to #23 on the charts - so I guess she didn't take the world by storm until the 1980's with 'Hit me with your best shot' and then 'Love is a Battlefield' and all her MTV videos... in 1979 it was still all about DISCO (The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, The Village People, Chic) FUNK (The Commodores), SOFT ROCK / COUNTRY (Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Rod Stewart).

My mom bought this when it came out. I know every song by heart. Still remember cruising 5 Mile Drive in Point Defiance park in the '81 Z28 with the t tops out and this song absolutely destroying the speakers. It was glorious.
