Singers. Perfect 4th harmonies are so tough because they're only a quarter step down and it's so easy to get pulled into blending vs harmonizing and these guys did it for years like they were asleep.
I love the video of Steel Panther covering it live. They were joined by Jerry Cantrell himself, grabbing the guitar, and Sully Erna from Godsmack grabbing the mic. Just before the chorus, Steel Panther's singers smiles at Sully and says "good luck!" :D Sully did pretty well though, for someone who is not Layne.

My brother did drugs with him the night he died. They parted ways, from jail, here in Salt Lake City, Utah and we read the news papers the next day. Such a loss.
Yeah and the thing about this '90 generation (and '80 too smh) was that they felt so insecure, like not up to the standard of great musicians at that time. I just can't get out of this grunge(ish) world right now.
AIC - Rain When I Die off of Dirt was always one of my favorites , you guys should check that one out. Think you would enjoy the big vocal on that chorus much like this one. Layne Staley and Chris Cornell were probably the strongest/greatest pure vocalists of that entire era and beyond IMO.
It's crazy to think that of the big 4 of grunge Eddie is the only vocalist still with us. What I would give to see a show w all 4 bands... Now it can never happen. If add Mother Love Bone and STP its still just Eddie...
Yuuuup Laynes vocals are one of a kind. His range is amazing. His deep creeping slow grooves into his intense higher guttural screams… duuuude. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
3:09 --- What you're describing in the song is the "talk box" that Jerry Cantrell is playing. Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton are known for playing it in several of their hit songs.
Hey guys, that sound is called a "Talk Box". It's the same thing used on Peter Framptons' "Do you feel like we do", and Aresomiths' "Sweet Emotion". It's a tube that runs into the guitar players mouth next to the microphone.
"Rotten Apple " is Absolutely under-rated! The harmony, melody, lyrics guitar, is hauntingly beautiful! So glad I saw AIC in that Era... Layne your music lives on forever 🔥❤
To my understanding, Layne isolated himself for years inside his Seattle apartment just nodding off on drugs until the drugs killed him. He was literally talking to his bandmate A DAY before he died, and the bandmate was trying to get Layne help, but Layne refused. It seemed clear to everyone around Layne that he chose his path, which was to die intentionally by way of Heroin overdose. “ Broken by my master “
Days? He wasn't found for two weeks. His mother and the cops busted down his door. Layne was dead and decomposing on the couch and his mother went and sat beside her son and held his hand. Can you imagine the smell? Only a mother would have could have done that. I can't even imagine the pain.
Mike Starr was with him the night Layne died. He wasn't there when he died but turned out Mike was hanging out with Layne and after he left Layne went off on some speedballs and died. Found two weeks later.
Yup! That chorus! I remember hearing this thinking “who is that singer!?” Which started the rabbit hole of Alice In Chains and chasing the Layne ghost. Such a raw talent. That voice is haunting and pierces the soul.
This song, Layne Staley's voice, still gives me goosebumps sometimes, 21 years after first hearing it. I first heard it with my dad when I was 6, and it was immediately one of my favorite songs. I still remember that my absolute favorite song at that time was Wherever I May Roam by Metallica, also introduced to me by my dad. Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Aaron Lewis, Corey Taylor, David Draiman, James Hetfield. Definitely my favorite vocalists of all time. Extremely powerful vocals, powerful song meanings, powerful vibes..
The beginning part of this song is Layne singing over Jerry playing the same notes as the vocals and Jerry is also going threw a wah pedal and a bit of a talk box pedal. Sound amazing and Erie!!!!
Jerry Cantrell is one of my fav guitar players. It's hard not to love AIC. The connection Layne and Jerry had harmonizing together was something that doesn't come around very often.
Couldn’t agree more. It wasn’t just the sound of AIC itself.. The harmony that Jerry has Layne had was unmistakable. As I am typing this, I’m honestly trying to think of other lead singer/lead guitarists who could sing that had great harmony with each other.
Way back in the 1990s when I saw this song on MTV and heard that voice I was totally in awe. I heard it right now and yeah same reaction again. Chills on arm, as well. Very distinctive, powerful, emotional voice. He'll always be a legend.
At 15:38 on the last chorus when Layne holds the note out and you hear Ryan say 'sing it man' almost to himself, you know thats when its hitting him just how insane Layne's voice was. Gone too soon.
Layne Staley had a great voice, for sure but one of the things I loved about this band is how Jerry Cantrell's voice complements the main singer's voice.
Christian Pereira the doubling of vocals by them, and especially how they harmonised, and disharmonised was just amazing and totally their sound. Rick Beato’s “what makes this song great?” on them is an amazing breakdown.
there are some songs in life that leave such a lasting impression and memory on you; this was one of those moments for me. I was 19 working for some inventory-taking company driving all over the bay area of California to different stores. On one day this song debuted on a hardcore station out of San Jose never played before I was driving the company van and just sat in the parking lot and couldn''t move i was like kicked in the face by this and was just floored. Never heard anything like it - it was black sabbath-esque but harder and creepier. So I couldn't wait to get back home and rushed out the record store and bought the CD and listened to the whole thing 3 or 4 times straight. They became my new favorite band and kept that priviledge with me until I heard Godsmack about 9 years later. Thanks for doing this one boys and letting me relive that experience in my mind.
Guys, I loved that you recognize Jerry's value in the band. Layne's voice is so haunting and powerful but the part of harmonizing with Jerry is unmatched. There was no other great band at that time that had this perfect combination on vocals. And Jerry was an important part of the songwriting. He deserves our respect.

It ain't like that would be fuckin great for these guys
I love their facial reactions when the first chorus starts. The exact moment when they realize why the song is great can be pinpointed!
“We Die Young” is one of the best Alice In Chain songs ever
We die Young is to Facelift as Them Bones is to Dirt
100% it is one of my favourites. That riff just crushes. So much fun to play too.
YUUUS
This is the one
@@ekgrafix exactly. We Die Young Man in the Box / Them Bones Dam That River
Absolutely necessary to play together
Layne's 1990 live performance of this song = Insane
"Dam That River" is one you guys should check out along with Nutshell.
Dam that river is just a straight up metal song, not even trying to sound like grunge
Great live song too! Such a bad ass tune!
“Rain When I Die” is a must.
They'll never do it.
Sadly.
Agreed. Layne's best vocal performance IMO.
Yes
Down in a hole is top 3 song in that album
Mike Starr on bass -- R.I.P. Darlin!
You can't do grunge without Temple of the Dog's "Say Hello to Heaven"
My brother did drugs with him the night he died. They parted ways, from jail, here in Salt Lake City, Utah and we read the news papers the next day. Such a loss.
Jerry's solo for this song, in which be almost beats up his guitar, is far and away the most underrated solo's of all time.
I love to see modern day music lovers blow their mind when they hear something like this for the first time. Rock music used to be sooo good.
Yeah and the thing about this '90 generation (and '80 too smh) was that they felt so insecure, like not up to the standard of great musicians at that time. I just can't get out of this grunge(ish) world right now.
“No Excuses” by Alice In Chains.
Staley harmonizing with the guitar! Very first song I ever heard from them, and loved them and knew they were special!
Angry Chair by Alice in Chains is a great one.
Yes!!
Yessir!!!! One of my first Alice In Chains songs!!!
Huge AIC fan. Angry Chair is their best song.
Angry Chair is menacing and awesome for sure
When George start squeezing his face so hard that you can't see his eyes no more, you know he's feeling it!!! :D
“Rain when I die” if you want one of the most powerful vocals in their catalogue!
Seconded
Confusion, bleed the freak, rooster, junkhead, the list goes on
Mike Starrs bass is lit on this album. He shure is one of my top5 bassist of all time.
Layne, Chris, Eddie, and Kurt all get their due.
Jerry is the unsung hero of grunge..ish. The first of the seconds.
It's crazy to think that of the big 4 of grunge Eddie is the only vocalist still with us. What I would give to see a show w all 4 bands... Now it can never happen. If add Mother Love Bone and STP its still just Eddie...
Jay B Jerry still grinding, don't forget what he's been through also. prop's to him👍
And if you add Blind Melon, it's still just Eddie.
That is crazy guys. I’ve never thought about that. You know Eddie has to ponder that sometimes.
"I stay away". One of their best songs
Don’t follow is probably my favorite song by Alice In Chains it’s beautiful
Agreed. It’s on my “Favorites” playlist, and can easily move me to tears
Yuuuup Laynes vocals are one of a kind. His range is amazing. His deep creeping slow grooves into his intense higher guttural screams… duuuude. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The intro is Layne singing over Jerry's guitar riff. At the same time Jerry is using a wah pedal and talk box
3:09 --- What you're describing in the song is the "talk box" that Jerry Cantrell is playing. Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton are known for playing it in several of their hit songs.
Was hoping someone would let them know. Good post, beat me to it.
Best vocal harmonies of AIC are in the EP “Jar of flies”.
Nutshell!!
I Stay Away is wonderful.
Don’t follow...no excuses.... solid ass EP
ROTTEN APPLE
rotten apple
Hey guys, that sound is called a "Talk Box". It's the same thing used on Peter Framptons' "Do you feel like we do", and Aresomiths' "Sweet Emotion". It's a tube that runs into the guitar players mouth next to the microphone.
“We die young” is also a good one from them off of that album
HeCTiiC MIKE one of my favorites, the riff is so heavy and nasty
Dear GOD yes 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@Jfricke8 Also one of my favorites, nice flow
One of my favorites. A must-listen!
"I stay away" by Alice In Chains
Love that song to bits!!
If you want goosebumps, THIS!
One of the most powerful layne performances out there
Gotta do "Down in a hole" my favorite off of dirt
Hell yeah..!
Unplugged version will give you guys chills
Is good song but too sad
I have a feeling it'd actually be too slow for them at this point. Maybe around the same time they did Rooster, but not now.
@@perfectragedy6565 that's a good point, maybe we die young or again
"I'm going to body this in the shower..." You gonn' try...we've all tried. Great reaction.
JudeFKennedy - I’ve actually injured myself trying!
"Rotten Apple" Alice in Chains
under. rated.
J'Dinkaledge Morgoon hell yeah bro!
One of my favs.
I LOVE how that’s the opener to Jar of Flies! 👍😃😍
"Rotten Apple " is Absolutely under-rated! The harmony, melody, lyrics guitar, is hauntingly beautiful! So glad I saw AIC in that Era... Layne your music lives on forever 🔥❤
J'Dinkaledge Morgoon it’s not underrated man
The saddest death in rock and roll. Not found for days. Nobody checked on him.
So awful.
@@irod3932 he died of a crack and heroin od
Mike Starr was with him the night Layne died. He wasn't there when he died but turned out Mike was hanging out with Layne and after he left Layne went off on some speedballs and died. Found two weeks later.
Yup! That chorus! I remember hearing this thinking “who is that singer!?” Which started the rabbit hole of Alice In Chains and chasing the Layne ghost. Such a raw talent. That voice is haunting and pierces the soul.
I feel like this is one of the only reactions that truly appreciates how incredible this song's chorus is.
SCREAMING TREES~ "Nearly Lost you"....a PERFECT FIT to what y'all doin'.
K Comm backwater by the meat puppets too
This song, Layne Staley's voice, still gives me goosebumps sometimes, 21 years after first hearing it.
100% correct
Talk box on ten
This was their big introductory hit. It hooked me immediately.
Just rename it the AIC marathon! Let's keep it going!
Cotton Hill
Seriously...nothing wrong with an AIC marathon
Yesssssssss
Jerry Cantrell is one of my fav guitar players. It's hard not to love AIC. The connection Layne and Jerry had harmonizing together was something that doesn't come around very often.
They need to do river of deceit
Couldn’t agree more. It wasn’t just the sound of AIC itself..
The harmony that Jerry has Layne had was unmistakable. As I am typing this, I’m honestly trying to think of other lead singer/lead guitarists who could sing that had great harmony with each other.
The expression you're looking for is vocal control... and Staley had a lot of it.
I think that was George
06:01 George’s face priceless.......Layne's notes hits on your mind and body.
Hugo Díaz i call it his “stank face.” One of my fave things about this channel!
🤣
Layne Staley had a great voice, for sure but one of the things I loved about this band is how Jerry Cantrell's voice complements the main singer's voice.
Christian Pereira the doubling of vocals by them, and especially how they harmonised, and disharmonised was just amazing and totally their sound. Rick Beato’s “what makes this song great?” on them is an amazing breakdown.
Still does....
555katwoman666 why?
there are some songs in life that leave such a lasting impression and memory on you; this was one of those moments for me.
No lie, I’ve “bodied” this song in the shower for awhile. Fortunately, Layne made me realize I couldn’t sing early in life. 🤘
Ahah, don't be so hard on yourself! 99% of the people should quit singing if compared to Layne Stanley! 🤘👍🇮🇹
Few can, don't hate on yourself. Work on singing the best you can in your range.
Say Hello 2 Heaven please! one of the greatest songs EVER
c. pza Cornell brings that shit to the soul
Guys, “I Stay Away” will change your lives. Give it a listen.
Definitely.
I agree, that song was ginormous.
I agree with this statement
Absolutely!!!!!
A great song. Personal favourite
Lol they can’t get through an an AIC song without pausing and rewinding non stop! Epic! 🤘🏻
"Down In A Hole" & "Nutshell" are pretty solid songs as well!!!! Definitely worth giving them a listen!
Though grungy, Layne and Jerry have some of the greatest harmonies in rock.
Thanks captain obvious
*metal
@@Salomon_G saying there's nothing grungy about them is a stretch. There's definitely a lot of grunge aspects in their music
Señor Romántico well, define grunge then.
Layne Staley's voice is that of a tortured angel who has descended into the darkness. If Satan put together a band to steal souls - this would be it.
Exactly!!!!
