Jerry actually did very few of the harmonies on the records. Just the live stuff. He was amazing tho. Layne would lay down nearly all the vocal harmonies over his own voice.
@@jimmydavies9038 not true. He wrote the harmonies. But he influenced Cantrell to sing them and in doing so made cantrell a great singer in the process. You can always hear the difference between their voices. Cantrell sang alot on studio takes. Shit heaven beside you is almost all Cantrell
Daniel Castillo there are many songs where you can hear Jerry. That said you can hear 2 and 3 layers of laynes voice in probably 10 of their songs. He’d go to the studio and lay down all of the harmonies himself. He worked tirelessly at it even in his last session with the band. Jerry is heard more often in songs like would and heaven beside you because they were more of a call and reply and the contrast in their voices was the whole point
Unfortunately a lot of great art stems from a place of profound pain. That's why so many of the greats are like shooting stars - brilliantly lighting up the rest of us for a few moments before they burn out and fade away. Staley, Weiland, Hendrix, Cobain, Morrison, Joplin ... far too many. It's almost like our world is too mundane to contain such luminescent talent.
Alice in Chains was the greatest band of the grunge era, in my opinion. The lead singer, Layne Staley suffered with depression and drug addiction, and it took his life far too young. His death was a great loss to those who loved him, and to those who loved his music. I appreciate your reactions on such a visceral level, because you lose yourself in the music and have such a beautiful spirit. I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel.
@@jasonspeelman4035Im one who likes Nirvana too, but I agree with you on the fact there is no reason they are bigger than AIC. Layne’s voice will never be topped.
Yea Chris Cornell was from Soundgarden & Audioslave, Scott Weiland the lead singer of Stone temple pilots & Velvet revolver. Mike Starr was the bassist from Alice in chains. Of the 5 big 'grunge' bands: Nirvana, Alice in chains, Soundgarden, Stone temple pilots and Pearl jam, Eddie Vedder from Pearl jam is the only singer still alive; all 5 were known for having pretty booming voices.
All had the known enemies, drugs and heroin in particular and depression. One can wonder how big AIC could have been had they been able to do more touring.

Drugs didn't kill Layne, whatever drove him to use drugs did. There's a story there that will never be told. Thank you for such a respectful reaction to such a troubled soul.
Layne Staley was the lead singer of Alice in Chains. He died on April 5, 2002. He was 34. He toured with Alice in Chains and his other band, Mad Season, until 1996 (or 1997, depening on what you call a "show"). He had been battling an addiction to heroin the majority of his adult life. His girlfriend - later fiance - Demri Perrot passed away from a heroin overdose. The majority of lyrics are written by the guitarist Jerry Cantrell and sung by Layne. Cantrell often said the lyrics were about innocuous things like breakups and political messages like censorship (as is the case with Man in the Box). Most fans believe - especially me - that the lyrics were about Layne and Demri's relationship with each other and heroin. The songs were deep, and they played an entire acoustic show on MTV Unplugged that was one of the best performances ever. Layne was an believable talent, whose life ended too quickly and shortly after Demri's. Alice in Chains is still touring today, albeit with a different lead singer (William Duvall). Duvall is not Layne, but he is an amazing singer in his own right. Staley's mother has unsuccessfully litigated Jerry Cantrell for the Alice in Chains name, leaving a bitter note to an already complicated relationship. They're one of the greatest bands ever. I'm always happy when I find someone listening.
This was the first song by AIC I heard. I remember watching MTV at work (it was a music office so we had MTV on all day) and this literally made me jump out of my seat with excitement it was sooo good.. still gives me chills... Rest in Power Layne Staley
This was the 'clean' version, BTW. All the pit, spit etc were originally shit. Layne Staley was a beast of a singer! (As we just saw!) You could mention him in the same sentence with Frank Sinatra, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Bjork, Annie Lenox, Chris Cornell and other greats and not be committing blasphemy! Yeah, unfortunately, heroin use was very pervasive among the grunge era musicians and there were many OD/suicides. BTW, most heroin overdoses occur after someone uses heroin for a time then quit, then relapse and start using again. Users slowly ramp up to a high dose during their initial use, then quit and their body cleans out and they loose their resistance (induced enzyme levels that quickly metabolize the heroin, to be technical) then when they relapse they start with the high dose they last used, which their bodies are no longer prepared to handle. Sorry, had to let the scientist out for a second there. Thanks for this.
@@aryansigrid Yeah, that's usually true. If my knowledge is correct, Layne got turned onto heroine at a really early age by a cousin, though. I'm sure he had depression later in life due to his drug use, but I don't believe that's what lead him to it.
"Brother" and "Heaven Beside You" from the Unplugged concert are 2 of my favorite Alice In Chains performances. And if you don't mind more "Gone too soon" singers, I suggest "No Rain" and "Change" by Blind Melon, the singer Shannon Hoon was just an incredible talent.

The two voices you hear in this band are Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. They were very much a collaborative duo, sharing the song writing duties. Kinda like the Lennon & McCartney of grunge, lol. Layne, the lead singer, is the one who died. Jerry Cantrell is still very much alive. He sang the lead on many Alice In Chains songs, including hits like "Heaven Beside You." Their real magic, though, was when they sang together. They're voices went together like peanut butter and jelly.
Yeah, it's so very tragic. Our grunge gods seemed to have felt too much. The passion that fueled their greatness was accompanied by a great deal of pain, as well.

Great group . Layne's voice is amazing . Their songs deep . Some of the lyrics are prophetic . Losing two members heart breaking . Layne towards the end was in very rough shape . You can see it and yet he fell thru the cracks . In the 90 's groups wrote their own music and sang it . No covers . You lose quite a bit when it's not your music . I love music . I go way back before rock . Listen to blues ect . It is great a new generation is listening to Alice In Chains . Nobody can imitate them . Love your reactions . Rock

It gives you pause to think about where these men fell short in their young lives. Being older, I wish there was someone who could come along side of these artists and help them get a firm grip on reality and life. It pains me to think about what we have lost from creative artists cutting their lives short and I feel for their families especially.

"Grunge" bands make songs based on their own life experiences, their feelings, their turmoil, inner demons, etc. That is why they are so good because they are putting their hearts and souls into their music, not just the great vocals but the instruments they play. RIP LAYNE STALEY RIP CHRIS CORNELL STAY SAFE EDDIE VEDDER

Jeff's Boy Nicky - I disagree, when you look up top metal bands of the 90s Alice In Chains is nowhere to be found. Now if you look up rock’s top bands, or grunge (which is a rock sub genre) they’re top 5 on most lists. There’s a reason for that.
Jamal not only is the singer badass but the guitar player Cantrell man he wrote most of the songs for this band. Underated in my eyes. But one of my favorite bands of all times!
ALICE IN CHAINS - THEM BONES.
Jamal I'm 65yr old Disabled Veteran 95% of the time is spent in my Little apt you'll never know how much enjoyment you bring to an old man's life many tks Bobby Daniels Memphis Tennessee
Also check out Mad Season, Layne's side project. Great stuff!!
One of the best bands and best songs in rock history. RIP Layne. I pray to God that you’ve found serenity. You had a beautiful soul and will ALWAYS be missed. 😢💙
Ha. Again you're reviewing stuff I love. AIC best group ever best sound ever! Early 90's was a great time to be in college.
Yeah me too👌
I am sooooo glad that you listened to this. Everything about it is absolutely legendary. Soooo glad you appreciated it.
Mad season- river of deceit
Amazing song with the same singer....🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Great group . Layne's voice is amazing . Their songs deep . Some of the lyrics are prophetic . Losing two members heart breaking . Layne towards the end was in very rough shape . You can see it and yet he fell thru the cracks . In the 90 's groups wrote their own music and sang it . No covers . You lose quite a bit when it's not your music . I love music . I go way back before rock . Listen to blues ect . It is great a new generation is listening to Alice In Chains . Nobody can imitate them . Love your reactions . Rock
Yes sadly nearly every lead vocalist from this era and genre is now gone. Can’t wait till you do comfortably numb by Pink Floyd. Make sure you do the live version at Earls court (pulse tour) 94.❤️❤️
That chugging, chunky guitar tone in this song is one of the greatest sounds ever produced by humanity, just drops you right down in the groove of the song without even trying. These guys were freakin' BRILLIANT.
"Man In The Box"
I'm the man in the box
[Album version:] Buried in my shit
[Music video version:] Buried in my pit
Won't you come and save me, save me?
Feed my eyes. Can you sew them shut?
Jesus Christ, deny your maker
He who tries will be wasted
Feed my eyes. Now you've sewn them shut
I'm the dog who gets beat
[Album version:] Shove my nose in shit
[Music video version:] Shove my nose in spit
Won't you come and save me, save me?
Feed my eyes. Can you sew them shut?
Jesus Christ, deny your maker
He who tries will be wasted
Feed my eyes. Now you've sewn them shut
Feed my eyes. Can you sew them shut?
Jesus Christ, deny your maker
He who tries will be wasted
Feed my eyes. Now you've sewn them shut
It gives you pause to think about where these men fell short in their young lives. Being older, I wish there was someone who could come along side of these artists and help them get a firm grip on reality and life. It pains me to think about what we have lost from creative artists cutting their lives short and I feel for their families especially.
Yeah he died my guy! Overdose 😭 he is one of my favorite writers! I relate to a lot of his music! Btw love your videos I make everyone watch w me.
"Grunge" bands make songs based on their own life experiences, their feelings, their turmoil, inner demons, etc. That is why they are so good because they are putting their hearts and souls into their music, not just the great vocals but the instruments they play.
RIP LAYNE STALEY
RIP CHRIS CORNELL
STAY SAFE EDDIE VEDDER
Down In A Hole/ Would/ I Stay Away/ Them Bones
I stay away is that song I just looped over and over.
Song..Down..in..the..hole..
Is 1 of Many That Does It For Me..
I Stay Away is my favorite
Amazing Composition and Masterfully Done Song.......Phenominal 🎼🎼🎼
Dude the live version of this song is amazing
Layne made a huge impact on me in an interesting way. His voice!!! Their music transcends things for me as well.. RIP Layne.
The song Nutshell by them is my favorite. On the Jar of Flies album.
This band still makes me chill up my spine. Incredible band.
Pearl jam-MTV Unplugged "Black" pleaseeee... Pulll up the lyrics
That's amazing.....that passion.
tiffany lara this!
Blackie Lawless un plugged and Pearl Jam oozed out all over little Bobby Dillons shoe so he gave him that crippling space cheese from Rob Zombie. Takes mmmme back
Layne Staley is probably the most talented rock vocalist of his generation. Such a small guy with such a large voice. I'm so glad I got to see AIC live before Layne passed, it was epic.
Sometimes we just get the Great ones for a short time. There is a long list! They tells us their story and move on.
obviously there are many great guitarists.....nothing more satisfying to the soul than the sound of a jerry cantrell guitar solo.....quality
Man, what the HELL ever happened to real music. Harsh and raw. Alice
I’m glad I had a dad with great music. I use to listen to this, AC/DC, GnR, Pearl Jam, Metallica, and many more on the school bus lol. Little ol me just jamming to cds on the bus!
Wish y’all the best! Keep your head up and smoke a bowl for me
listen to their Jar of Flies ep. Acoustic heart wrenching stuff in there.
That you were speechless throughout the video says a lot. Thank you.
Check out "Got Me Wrong" from the Sap EP. It's awesome as well!!!
Thanks for getting me to enjoy their music again.Lane(sp) passed away a few months after the MTV Unplugged.
He's singing from the grave and it sounds like it.
Do Would or Them Bones by Alice in Chains both great songs
That jacket Layne wears in amazing. Heroine was such a catalyst to amazing music but at the cost of the amazing talent, espcially so with Layne where his songs were his struggles.
You should react to Alice in chains "Love Hate Love " live at the Moore
Yes!
So GLAD YOU'VE Discovered it !
I love these hat trick reactions you're doing!!! After AIC u gotta react to Pearl Jam Black unplugged, Jeremy & Porch live at Pink Pop!!! Seriously, u can thank me later😉 Much ♥️ from Bama 🙋 💕
PS: All members of Pearl Jam are still Alive💯

ROLL TIDE!!!! 🐘🐘🏈🏈😃😃
Layne and Chris Cornell were very close friends. Alice, Soundgarden m, and Pearljam were all from Seattle and were all really good friends. Please react to ALICE IN CHAINS LOVE HATE LOVE LIVE AT THE MOORE THEATRE!! DOWN IN A HOME UNPLUGGED! You gotta do live Alice bro I’m telling you!!
React to Love Hate Love live at the Moore theater in Seattle please
The bass player of alice in chains died as well from heroin. He was featured on celebrity rehab and was doing well afterwards but like layne he gave in to his temptation of addiction
This song was my introduction to Alice in Chains and it's been a love affair ever since !
Mine too. I remember listening to this masterpiece on repeat all day long when I came across the band back then.
Seattle Rock/Grunge was so huge in the early 90's with Bands like this Nirvana,Pearl jam etc man I miss the 90's 💯
Lane did die. Another great song that features his vocal talents is "Would"
Never tire of hearing this song. The rock stations here in ATL play it a lot. Musically, it’s like a bull charging out of the gate and tearing up everything in its path. Totally off the chain.
React Request: Soundgarden (with Chris Cornell) - Spoonman
My favorite band out of that Seattle scene. Nutshell is my fav song by them. It’s sad but real if you’ve ever been in that mindset or addicted (which brings the mindset too).
