I know you would like Rooster by Alice in Chains. 'Rooster' is the nickname of guitarist Jerry Cantrells father. 'Rooster' served and faugh in Vietnam. It's about some of his experiences in the war. It's a beautiful, heartfelt masterpiece. Man in the Box is the news man on TV (the box) feeding the viewers' propaganda.
In a 1992 interview with Rolling Stone, Layne Staley explained the origins of the song's lyrics: I started writing about censorship. Around the same time, we went out for dinner with some Columbia Records people who were vegetarians. They told me how veal was made from calves raised in these small boxes, and that image stuck in my head. So I went home and wrote about government censorship and eating meat as seen through the eyes of a doomed calf.[11] Jerry Cantrell said of the song: But what it's basically about is, is how government and media control the public's perception of events in the world or whatever, and they build you into a box by feeding it to you in your home, ya know. And it's just about breaking out of that box and looking outside of that box that has been built for you.[12]
I have listened to every single song of theirs probably 10s of thousands of times, and every reaction ever made. Layne runs through my veins. They even played a snippet/bumper of Mad Season's I Don't Know Anything either at the last playoff game (or was it the Superbowl?), which I loved. I love Mad Season as well.

*Alright, BP I got your explanation here...* 'Man In The Box' is actually about new music artists getting signed to record labels for the first time and signing away their artistic integrity for promises of riches to come. But now that they're a year or so into their deal with Columbia Records, they realize they're little more than livestock to be fetted for the kill. The "man in the box" is comparing their situation to factory farming. Their living quality is of no concern to the proprietors; only their margin for profit. If they aren't getting their anticipated return on their investment, then they'll just be kept on the road even longer. Living out of ratty motels and broken down tour buses that have been in service since the 1970s. The "feed my eyes" line comes from their very first dinner meeting they had with Columbia Records executives in the finest restaurant in town. Because they didn't sign the deal that night, the record label didn't pick up their bill for them. The only thing that got fed that night was their eyes by being allowed to look at how the upper crust lives, but not allowed to partake in it themselves because they were broke. Their stomachs stayed empty while their eyes got fed. Had they sewn their eyes shut, they wouldn't have been tempted. The phrase "Jesus Christ deny your maker" is a little misleading. It's actually two separate thoughts. The "Jesus Christ" isn't calling to Christ directly. It's the common exhalation people say when something unusual happens in front of them. They see something shocking, and mutter to themselves, "Jesus Christ...." The "Deny your maker" is still up to interpretation. Most likely, this line was suggested by a producer or someone in the studio to give it more weight and intrigue by attempting to tie it in to the "Jesus Christ" lyric that preceded it.
Layne Staley has one of my all time favorite male voices! This probably wasn't the best song for a first reaction to them! Check out Rooster, Nutshell, Heaven beside you, No excuses or Don't follow! They're MTV Unplugged session is the best!
Exceptional. I heard that (among other analogies) that man in the box described the constraints that the labels were putting on them. Putting them in a box. A helpful take I heard is to take the “save my eyes . . .” Section as a dialogue between the positive plea & an opposing view. “Jesus Christ/deny your maker” like a destructive voice against the singer. Layne sings the positive & Jerry sings the negative in a different voice. Saying “sew your eyes shut”. & prevails saying “now you’ve sewn them shut”.
Alice In Chains is a top 3 band all time for me. Layne’s best performance live was “Love Hate Love” at The Moore. Love what you do! Rooster, Nutshell, and Don’t Follow are all excellent songs too

Quick connection: I worked at a family business. One of the designers had platinum albums of Alice in Chains next to his desk. I thought he was an amazing album designer, later to find out he was Jerry’s uncle - brother to his mom that all the songs were written about. A lot of the back stories were so similar to Kurt Cobain. Dysfunctional white family from poor areas in Washington state. Can see why their lyrics and music captured a whole nation…
His vocals on this chorus is UNDENIABLE, and he was Even better performing live, I was lucky enough to AIC with Layne 5 or 6 times early to mud 90's, wayyy before UNPLUGGED, where you could see the TOLL HIS ADDICTION HAD TAKEN ON HIM

AIC is one of my favorite bands! "Man in the Box" is the song that broke them on their major lavel debut. I think that opening riff and chant, along with the chorus hook, and Layne's vocals is why this song is liked. You have to remember (or maybe you're too young?), what was going on in Rock music and what was popular, in 1990! This was about 1 1/2 years BEFORE Nirvana and Pearl Jam broke big, and hair bands like Trixter, Firehouse, Nelson, etc., were the big MTV bands at the time. This was very different to what was the rock norm of the day. Everyone seems to be wanting you to react to "Rooster" next. Not that it isn't a great tune, but I'd say do a reaction to "Rain When I Die", or "Down in a Hole". THEN check out "Rooster"!
This brings me back to my early 20's. The freest and greatest time, before being tied down with life experience. Every night partying and all day sleeping with some work in between. The whole point of life was to have maximum FUN! Not all the way grown up and finding out just who I was. This was an anthem for every kid born in the 70's! Amazing how a song can represent so much in just 3 minutes.

I think rooster would be a good song. It was written by the guitarist whose dad was a sbiper during the vietnam war and is based on the things he shared with his son (the guitarist). Its lyrically much more interesting (and is overall a great song)
The other guy was right, the Box is the television, it's about more or less the media and politicians filling our brains full of lies and asking us to be blind to everything else including the truth... With such a phenomenal vocal talent, there is definitely something there that will grab you. Edit: grunge lyrics are notoriously cryptic, good luck with the interpretation! Some recommendations, if you haven't done them already: "Down in a Hole (MTV Unplugged ver.)," "Would," "Rooster," "Nutshell (MTV Unplugged ver.)" - I could keep going, but this is probably a good start.
Trust me, BP, Alice In Chains is one of those bands that grows on you. I wasn’t all that into them when they first broke on the scene in 1990-91, but after seeing them live on one of their first tours (on the legendary North American Clash of the Titans tour) in 1991, I became a dedicated fan to this very day. They’re one of my favorite bands because their music is pretty emotional and speaks on a different level than most bands of that time. Their catalog is varied and diverse but still high quality. This is a deep rabbit hole and a band worth investigating way more. My all time favorite song from them is “Down in a Hole” from their second album, Dirt. Thematically, “Man in the Box” and “Down in a Hole” are very similar. The singer, Layne Staley, struggled with heroin addiction and he was basically giving up and looking for any way to get a handle on it. It’s a cry for help from God by someone who isn’t sure they believe in God. It is confusing, but makes sense when you keep that in mind.
my fave singer of all time, maybe...Love Hate Love live at the Moore was the pinnacle, but then MTV Unplugged - Rooster, Nutshell is so incredible & tragic, I can't get through it without balling.
Massive alice in chains fan, but this definitely isn't my favorite of theirs. Give them some more chances if you don't dig this one. Lanyes voice is always nuts tho.
Layne Staley could sing the happiest song ever imagined, and yet somehow tears would still find their way to my eyes. There's no sufficient explanation I've found as to why his life specifically, and its hauntingly tragic end, will forever cast a long shadow over the doorway of my heart. RIP 🕊️💔♾️ Layne Thomas Staley 8/22/67-4/5/02
Appreciate the sincerity of your reactions. Doesn't matter if the selection is what you prefer (or not so much) - just that you are genuine about it. I think it's good that you try to find what appeals to people in the pieces and that you are willing to dig a little deeper. Many reactors lack authenticity because they only want to give positive reinforcement to their followers to grow their channel. I clicked on the link for this review because I enjoy you as a reactor, but I don't watch every review you do knowing beforehand that I really don't care for some of the songs. Man in the Box was a song I wasn't sure about because it was popular around the time I mostly quit listening to radio. I did know this, and it took back to that time in my life. Like you, I never really understood the lyrics although something about the power of the vocal performance at that same spot you perked up to has always stuck with me. Great reaction! Thank you
The Man in the Box was a man named Doc who lived in a cardboard box in downtown Seattle. He managed to get a job at a local nightclub setting up for shows. One weekend they were setting up a showcase for labels to see the local music scene. Doc got to talking to a lady from a label and she offered him a job at the label. The last they saw of Doc was him heading to LA to work for the label. True story. My husband's band was in that showcase.
Layne Staley could sing his rear-end off. Tragically, like so many during that era, he was a heroin addict, and I hear that in the lyrics of nearly every song they did. He died way too young, and even more tragic, he wasn't discovered until 2 weeks after he passed, by the police and his mother. But that man could sing, and every live performance he proved it. I never heard him sound less than stellar.
This song is all about Layne Staley's voice & vocal range. Would is my fav AIC song. Layne Staley's parents were very religious and he broke from the church
AIC is one of the best bands of the "grunge" era. I was 10 years old the first time I saw the music video for Rooster. It had a profound impact on my young mind... in my 40's now and I love them more today than the 90's.
I remember liking and buying this song when it came out in high school (it was so different and provocative) and feeling like I was surely going to hell for listening. But I couldn't stop myself!
Nah Alice Cooper was popular back in the 70s and 80s. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell do the singing on Alice N Chains songs. Every song is a good one.
I've always said people HEAR music differently so understand you're not feeling it.....but you are the 1st reactor who hasn't felt it!! Lol....love your reactions ❤
This song is all right, it's one of those things that played on the radio all the time and is still play to this day so it kind of sticks around. This would follow under the category of grunge, and if you want another good grunge artist to listen to I suggest Pearl Jam and the song Jeremy is really good
Gotta check out SLAYER! My hubby if 30 years is the lead singer and bass player. Reign in blood, angel of death… hell any of em! Alice In Chains toured with them on clash of the titians! They were booed but I fell in love with them!
The song is about censorship which is ironic since the music video was censored. Alice in Chains are a band that you'll probably need to listen to multiple songs to get use to their sound. They have heavy songs & chill songs, you might like the chiller songs(Like Rooster, Nutshell, Down in a Hole, Would). Man in the Box is their more Metal sound & was the song that put them on the map in 1990. AIC are considered part of the big 4 Grunge bands with Nirvana, Pearl Jam & Soundgarden. AIC are most famous for their vocal harmonies(they have 2 singers) & dark lyrics & being the heaviest grunge band. Unfortunately the bassist & lead singer in this video have passed away.
I love your reactions to older Rock music Black; I came across your videos recently but have viewed about 50 - 60 of them the past week. Great stuff. One band I would like to see your react to is " Rush ". One of the greatest bands to come out of Toronto. They have a huge discography with heavy airplay on FM stations over the past 40 years. Keep up the great work. I'll be watching...

This is the typical 90s grunge alternative rock. Its what i grew up on. Nirvana, pearl jam, etc. So iconic 💜💜
my fave singer of all time, maybe...Love Hate Love live at the Moore was the pinnacle, but then MTV Unplugged - Rooster, Nutshell is so incredible & tragic, I can't get through it without balling.
You want to be blown away… listen to LOVE HATE LOVE live at the Moore.
I'm the man the box. Burried in my pit. Won't you come and save me? Deny your Maker!
Layne Staley was a once in a generation singer
Love Hate Love Live at the Moore please! You'll be blown away!!
R.i.p Lane Staley! Dude was a legend. Made my high school years awesome
This song was Layne's prayer to the world, and was very much about drug addiction. It's musically "my jam" but lyrically a very sad story.
I've noticed brothers aren't much into grunge. S'ok if it's not your thing. No worries! I love the sh*t out of it. 😁 Love your honesty. 🤘
LOVE HATE LOVE LIVE AT THE MOORE
TRULY ONE OF THE GREATEST VOICES IN ROCK AND ROLL BEFORE HIS DOWNFALL
Rhythm section tight af!!
Another voice we lost too soon! R.I.P. Layne ❤
Massive alice in chains fan, but this definitely isn't my favorite of theirs. Give them some more chances if you don't dig this one. Lanyes voice is always nuts tho.
Have u listened to this where they isolated Layne's voice, it's amazing.
Layne Staley could sing the happiest song ever imagined, and yet somehow tears would still find their way to my eyes. There's no sufficient explanation I've found as to why his life specifically, and its hauntingly tragic end, will forever cast a long shadow over the doorway of my heart.
RIP 🕊️💔♾️
Layne Thomas Staley

Thank you
Alice in Chains are one of the big 4 in grunge with that Seattle sound back in the late 80's through the 90's.
Check out Alice In Chains unplugged MTV - Nutshell and Down in a Hole
Definitely check out some live stuff, Love Hate Love at The Moore is legendary or their Unplugged set, Nutshell and Down in a Hole in particular
I love this song! Some of the girls would play this at the dancer bar we used to go to.
My man ..Layne...damn he could sang!!!!
If you really want to see the magic of Alice in chains, watch their song "Love hate love". Live from the moore theater
Hey, I appreciate you keeping your reactions real. Mad props. Keep it up. (by the way, I LOVE this song but I still want you to keep it real.)
This song is all about Layne Staley's voice & vocal range. Would is my fav AIC song. Layne Staley's parents were very religious and he broke from the church
Layne was a awesome singer with great range.
Rooster is the best of many great Alice In Chains songs.
AIC is one of the best bands of the "grunge" era. I was 10 years old the first time I saw the music video for Rooster. It had a profound impact on my young mind... in my 40's now and I love them more today than the 90's.
Good choice, but nothing compares to their live performances, so i would recommend you to check out Love Hate Love live at the Moore🤗
This would follow under the category of grunge, and if you want another good grunge artist to listen to I suggest Pearl Jam and the song Jeremy is really good
The unplugged versions would be a good place to start.
I LOVE that you're getting into 1990s Seattle Grunge. LET'S GOOOO!!!
AiC took me a while to warm up to, fortunately at the time it was on the radio and people still listened to the radio.
Love Hate Love live is a MUST reaction. Layne is the greatest voice of our time (MTV era), and possibly of all time.
I think why people love alice in chains so much is layne is so relatable with his delivery
React to love, hate, love Live in The Moore!!!!
Perfection, Layne's full brilliance in full effect
Gotta check out SLAYER!
My hubby if 30 years is the lead singer and bass player. Reign in blood, angel of death… hell any of em! Alice In Chains toured with them on clash of the titians! They were booed but I fell in love with them!
That ranch is Jerry’s pops ranch in Oklahoma. Part of Rooster is also on that ranch.
My tops are Pink Floyd, AIC and Ren. ❤
Love this one glad you covered 😊
I love your reactions to older Rock music Black; I came across your videos recently but have viewed about 50 - 60 of them the past week. Great stuff. One band I would like to see your react to is " Rush ". One of the greatest bands to come out of Toronto. They have a huge discography with heavy airplay on FM stations over the past 40 years. Keep up the great work. I'll be watching...
When this song came out there was Nothing like it. Everyone that was bored with music really liked the change.
Layne staley is one of the greatest vocalists ever. R.I.P.
