"'Fell On Black Days' was like this ongoing fear I've had for years. It took me a long time to write that song. We've tried to do three different versions with that title, and none of them have ever worked," he said. "It's a feeling that everyone gets. You're happy with your life, everything's going well, things are exciting - when all of a sudden you realize you're unhappy in the extreme, to the point of being really, really scared. There's no particular event you can pin the feeling down to, it's just that you realize one day that everything in your life is f--ked!" Chris Cornell quoted in magazine article about writing the song

I believe Chris suffered from clinical depression, and ultimately his meds led to his death. Part of me wishes he would have continued to smoke and drink, but it wasn't meant to be.

      @BuzzaB77 4 года назад +49

Man that's hard to read. I used to rationalize depression, as I've never suffered from it genuinely. Until I met an artist who was bipolar, and it became clear it was chemical. no rime no reason her dreams could be coming true and she would still suddenly just have days where she described she couldn't find the joy in anything. so cruel.

    • @todlichreiter

That is the definition of clinical depression, unfortunatelly

Yep the Black Days 3 version on the Superunknown deluxe is a great heavy counterpoint to where this song would eventually go.

You can make that case. To me, it's both. Especially since Post-Grunge (as with Post-Punk) is a thing. Seattle was the epicenter of The Grunge Revolution; however, Grunge ain't confined to Seattle. Grunge has been brought to us by way of Chicago (Smashing Pumpkins), U.K. (Bush), and even Australia (early Silverchair) and South Africa (Seether, although they are technically Post-Grunge). Grunge rocks, man. 👍🏻

Have you heard the intro to the songs, ‘footsteps’ by Pearl Jam, ‘times of trouble’ by Temple of the Dog and ‘rotten apple’ by Alice in Chains? All a dedication, like the Alice song Would? to Andrew Wood.
‘Apple’ was the name of the only album released by Mother Love Bone.
The band Green River, when they split, half that band became Mudhoney and half of that band became Mother Love Bone and when MLB split, half of that band became Pearl Jam.
The song ‘right turn’ by Alice in Chains is sung by Layne, Mark from Mudhoney and Chris Cornell.
Chris Cornell was Andrew Wood’s best friend.
Pearl Jam have a song called ‘Lukin’ on their 4th album ‘No Code’ and it’s about Matt Lukin, the original bass player form Mudhoney - are there any other Seattle band links like these?

It's funny how songs age -- when I first heard this song when it came out, in the 90s, it was an absolute stunner. Stood out from all the other tracks. That bent guitar riff. The groove with those heavy fills. The sludgy, moody, ethereal vibe. The little change to the major key in the last half. And the vocal range.
But I guess, if you're hearing this for the first time in 2019, you've already heard all the copycats and bands that were influenced by them, who polished the sound or were more influenced by other cuts on the record (FOURTH OF JULY is one of the tracks that influenced Deftones and a ton of other bands). And in the end, it doesn't have the same impact.
Cos this song was one of those tracks that everyone was raving about back in the day.😂

Depression sometimes doesn’t have any rhyme or “reason” to it. It just is. And it can be a real grind, a slog. Not particularly deep or dramatic, just bleak or numb. The repetitive grind in the groove perfectly evokes that feeling.
Grunge was about rejecting materialism and superficiality, not necessarily about perfect musicianship, but rather evoking meaningful emotions.

The repetition works because the focus should be on the lyrics that are absolutely incredible.

Super excited for this marathon. The early 90s in Seattle was one of the most fecund and exciting times for music. Such dark, raw, honest creativity all over mainstream media and culture. Iconic bands and artistry. I like this Soundgarden song because you hear all the classic elements of the band from odd times to Persian influences, but subtly and in a very radio friendly package compared to their earlier albums. Cornell shines as always.
