I read the Phil Norman bio of Paul McCartney, and he wrote “...Nirvana, the American grunge band at the furthest extreme from the Beatles and sunny Britpop.” I’m shocked that someone who writes about music could *not* notice the deep influence the Beatles had on Kurt Cobain and Nirvana is baffling.
This song is heavy. I remember when the Nevermind album came out. I was a kid but Nirvana spoke to how I felt. I was going through some of the worst things dealing with an alcholic Dad and being bullied in school. I was very depressed and hearing Nirvana I was like they get me. Kurt Cobain was speaking to my soul with the way he sang, his lyrics and the way he and Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl played with such angst my pain, sadness, lonliness and anger was released through hearing their music. I was so sad when Kurt died. He meant a lot to me as a fan.
when he says "take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours dont be late" that is later referenced in the famous track by blink 182 called "adam's song" in which the singer says "I took my time, I hurried up, The choice was mine - I didn't think enough, I'm too depressed to go on, You'll be sorry when I'm gone" this line is also found near the beginning of the track
“Doused In Mud, Soaked In Bleach” was a late 80’s Seattle slogan for addicts turning in their used needles....also George you’re 100% right, Kurt chose the effect pedal for his guitar because he wanted an “under water” guitar sound for the song👍🏼👍🏼

Yup. They got the idea when they were in my home area of San Francisco, and Kurt saw a poster that said “Bleach Your Rigs”. It also inspired the name of their first album “Bleach”.
That is true; yet his choice of words were those that you could put so much meaning into. Which is why so many peoples takes are all over the place lol. He was a master at that.
I still remember hearing Kurt Loder reporting Kurt Cobain’s death. That loss was a rough one for us 90s teens. I always felt like he was more saying ‘don’t be fake bc I’ll accept who you are’. When he says ‘come doused in mud, soaked in bleach’ I always took that to mean ‘come as you are, the worst and the best parts. I won’t reject you’.

I was in my early 20's when grunge took off (24 when this album dropped) and it all just blew my mind... Every time I hear Nirvana, AIC, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or STP it just throws me right back to my ripped jeans, flannel and messy hair days... Awesome times...
I have heard this song a million times, and I never delved into the lyrics to Come As You Are - but I am fairly certain George summed it up brilliantly.
My interpretation of this song's lyrics was always about the conflicted and often paradoxical nature of people. Every person is a multiplicity, both friend and enemy, existing as themselves but also as they used to be and also how they are expected to be by others. Kurt seemed to struggle with the sense that he could never fully understand himself or others, or perhaps his understanding was SO clear that it was painful.
Yeah, it makes me think about romantic relationships and how people want there significant others to lie and act lile they don't want to have sex with anyone else. If people were 100% honest, would they be able to handle the truth? That there significant other would like to have sex with someone other than them? That is natural. Why is it so hard to accept?
These guys find depths in the lyrics of songs, I cannot fathom. It's like hearing them for the first time for me...even though I've known them for 20 years. Great job guys., great job.
That watery sound was made by an effect by Electro Harmonix called a Small Clone Chorus. Chorus effects can definitely give that underwater sound, and some of them can be intense enough to give a seasick feeling.
In case you didn't love the song, don't feel bad or weird about it. Many grunge music fans (myself included) don't worship (some don't even like) Nirvana. It all comes down to personal preference and taste. Although, if you're doing another Nirvana reaction, I'd definitely go with Lithium. A very special song to say the least!

He didn't kill himself. He had 3x the lethal dose of heroin in him and fingerprints wiped off the gun. He was going to divorce Courtney and she wasn't having that.
Nevermind is a work of art! Each song blends so well into the next and instead of the individual songs standing alone the vibe of the entire album is a masterpiece. It’s one of a few albums that should be played from start to finish. With that said “On a Plain” is my favorite example of how the lyrics, emotion and music blend together. This is a special album, not because it changed music at the time but because it’s so good.
This is what I've been waiting for guys. I've been a huge Nirvana fan since I was 12 back in 1991. I love how you guys break it down. This is fantastic. Thanks so much. ❤️
They won't do "Rain when I die" by chains, they probably won't be doing "Say hell to heaven" either. I think they're looking at titles and skipping what sounds depressing 🤷♂️
Something everyone always forget about Kurt. Everything in Nevermind was writen, and recorded when he had nothing, and was playing in just a band, that at most, don't let him die of hunger. When Nevermind come out, he was homeless, living in a old car. Nothing in Nevermind deals with sucess. Sucess only comes after, a few months after, But it wasn't a gradual thing either. He went from homeless to a millionaire in a few weeks
@@ottogofast3882 Yes, they have a somewhat of a following. That's why they sign a deal with a bigger company. They had the potencial to be the next Sonic Youth. But 40k at that time was virtually the same of zero. And the money they made in that was long long gone. Having a band, even a small one, is a very expensive thing, and when a band is lucky enough to have a record deal, to deal with the expenses, the label make most of the profit. And Nirvana was far from being a sucesseful band. Even when they make the deal with Geffen, who was a great deal, the money they made, they spend it all in recording Nevermind. When it come out months later, Kurt was homeless, and they had to tour just to see some money. They where on tour, when the record come out, and they notice that shows where being regulary changed from small clubs to larger venues. And everyday they where having bigger and bigger crowds. It really is a story like no other in music history. They started the tour broke, and they ended it millionareis and the biggest band in the world. On front of their eyes, that they don't even notice how big was until the end of the tour.
Hey guys! I just wanted to recommend an artist to review. I'm very surprised no one has recommended Radiohead yet. One of my favorite bands that has been famous for a long time and is still creating new music. Thanks!
I thought that too until I saw the unplugged version of 'Man Who Sold the World'. I never knew that was Kurt playing the solo. He's not shreddin' or anything but it's so tasteful and tuneful!
Oh yeah, this was the second song I ever learned on guitar, back when I was 13 (Smells Like Teen Spirit was the first!) Still gotta suggest the Sludge Marathon!
Nirvana's appearance on MTV in 91 was the cultural beginning of the nineties. They changed everything, forcing the music industry out of eighties, changing multiple music genres aside from rock. People suddenly expected something different to what they'd heard over the past near decade.
I know that "doused in mud, soaked in bleach" is a reference to a Seattle-area anti-drug campaign (I believe they were literally asking users "if you're going to shoot up, at least please don't leave infected needles around"). With that in mind, and knowing Kurt's love of John Lennon (Butch Vig used Lennon as an example to get Kurt to double-track his vocals), I always wondered if the chorus might also serve as a reference to "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" (with "Warm Gun" being a metaphor for heroin). It could, perhaps, be about (at least partially) Kurt's desire to get clean, but also his inability to do so.
Ryan Waggoner Cobain loved coming up with lyrics with double meanings. To me he is singing about how hypocritical we are in relationships with people. Come as you are, as I want you to be.
I thought Lennon stumbled onto the phrase “happiness is a warm gun” while reading an issue of NRA magazine. That song is clearly about intercourse... or is it?
One of the best descriptions I’ve ever read on Kurt Cobain is “his voice spoke of a life as weathered as his jeans”. It was in the Entertainment Weekly’s “100 Greatest Entertainers of the 20th Century”. Kurt was 72 on the list, ahead of Neil Young (!).
Thanls! I've been listening to this song for over 30 years and never even thought he had any intention with the lyrics, but your perspective makes perfect sense
"Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach" were taken from a campaign in Seattle that encouraged heroin users to soak their needles in bleach after injecting to reduce the risk of spreading HIV. The phrase for the campaign was actually "If doused in mud, soak in bleach
A band you might want to include in your grunge marathon is Jane’s Addiction. They’re not really “grunge” but they are from the same time period. Try “Stop” or Mountain Song “

George, you’re a really smart dude. That is possibly the best interpretation of the songs lyrics that I have ever heard, and you came up with a right off the cuff. I’ve noticed over a number of your reactions that you have this talent; you naturally think like a poet. Good on you mate I always look forward to hearing your take on the lyrics of any given song. You both has become my favourite reaction team, so to speak, even though I’ve only begun listening to you regularly within the past month or so. I have subscribed to you, and unsubscribe to several other reactors because you guys are kind of the whole package: good sense of humour, good taste in music, never afraid to speak your minds, and you’ve both got the intellect to back it all up with real substance. I think "In Bloom" would probably be more along the lines of what you were expecting from a Nirvana song.

I would say that just about anything from In Utero would work too. That was their big FU to the record labels.
Possibly 'Breed' or 'Territorial Pissings'. Personally , I think 'Lounge Act' is the best song off Nevermind.
The drums on all the Nirvana songs drive it. Dave Grohl is a great drummer.

Warren Haynes (Govt Mule & Allman Bro’s) & Chris Stapleton did a badass version of it.
The "underwater" sound you're talking about is a chorus effect.
Yup! I was hoping someone would point that out and also that it's the guitar and not bass that George was referring to.
They both have chorus on them
I love the chorus effect
nope...it's flamger plus chorus...
@@sebastiankrajewski2029 It's a Electro Harmonixs Small Stone Chorus Pedal.
I was in my early 20's when grunge took off (24 when this album dropped) and it all just blew my mind... Every time I hear Nirvana, AIC, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or STP it just throws me right back to my ripped jeans, flannel and messy hair days... Awesome times...
I love George's take on the lyrics, he explained it really well
I have heard this song a million times, and I never delved into the lyrics to Come As You Are - but I am fairly certain George summed it up brilliantly.
Patrick McHugh I like it. Good take
@@susanmaggiora4800 ty Susan, just my thoughts.
"Territorial pissings" would have been so great 😂
I wanna see them listen to Hairspray Queen haha
In Utero is their best album, scentless apprentice is one of the best songs from it
These guys find depths in the lyrics of songs, I cannot fathom. It's like hearing them for the first time for me...even though I've known them for 20 years. Great job guys., great job.
Blue oyster cult - (don’t fear )the reaper
Josesp92 they did that a year ago, my guy
Josesp92 S U S T A I N !
That watery sound was made by an effect by Electro Harmonix called a Small Clone Chorus. Chorus effects can definitely give that underwater sound, and some of them can be intense enough to give a seasick feeling.
Y’all should do “in bloom” or “lithium”
In case you didn't love the song, don't feel bad or weird about it. Many grunge music fans (myself included) don't worship (some don't even like) Nirvana. It all comes down to personal preference and taste.
Although, if you're doing another Nirvana reaction, I'd definitely go with Lithium. A very special song to say the least!
spykp I’m not even a grunge type music and it is kinda cliche but nirvana is amazing Kurt was just different he was so good come as you are or heart shaped box is my favorite
Jacob Bankster how is grunge...cliche? Cliche of what😂
The only reason your saying that is cause they surpassed their genre
Absolute truth. I like nirvana, but more of AIC instead..
Pinhead Larry he’s saying that putting Nirvana on the top of grunge and saying they stand out from the rest is cliche, not grunge itself.
Going back to your old vids I haven’t seen, they do not disappoint. As someone who’s heard this song so many times; I’ve never seen it that way. I liked that take. I think we all gotta think about that, such an established song. Thanks lads
Dayum, George. Your insightful interpretations makes me rethink & revisit some of my old favourites. I love hearing them through new ears! Thanks gents!
I knew it was inevitable, but still, thank you for doing Nirvana. They were the reason I started playing music. I still love listening to them a lot.
I always find this song haunting, the fact that a few years later he shot himself, while the song says over and over, "I swear I don't have a gun..."
He didn't kill himself. He had 3x the lethal dose of heroin in him and fingerprints wiped off the gun. He was going to divorce Courtney and she wasn't having that.
It was Dave, as he wanted to be a lead singer and not stuck on the drums 😂
He's basically saying he's not forcing anybody to be act like they're someone else, come as you are; be yourself.
The Breeders - Cannonball. Or Veruca Salt - Volcano Girls. They are around the same era too
Yes! Chick bands!
My favorite breeders song is drivin on 9 damn I love that song,
Nevermind is a work of art!
“On a Plain” is one of the best songs written about writer’s block and would’ve been a single on any other’s album.
“Cherub Rock” by Smashing Pumpkins for this grunge(ish) marathon please 🙏🏼
This is what I've been waiting for guys. I've been a huge Nirvana fan since I was 12 back in 1991. I love how you guys break it down. This is fantastic. Thanks so much. ❤️
SAY HELLO 2 HEAVEN by Temple of the Dog. pls guys you will be utterly floored.
They won't do "Rain when I die" by chains, they probably won't be doing "Say hell to heaven" either. I think they're looking at titles and skipping what sounds depressing 🤷♂️
"is he talking about bustin' a nut?" LOL Best comment ever!!
Kurt would’ve laughed.
The cover art for the single has spent on it, so the double menacing wasn’t lost on him.
Local H - Bound for the floor or
Silverchair - Freak. Alternative grunge bands back in the 90s you should listen to next
Man I love Local H.
I love bound for the floor
My opinion: He's talking to people who came around after he became somebody and he's telling them he remembers what they were really like.
He went from homeless to a millionaire in a few weeks
almahperditae bleach sold about 40,000 records before Nevermind released so they definitely had a following and some pocket change before they blew up
@@ottogofast3882 Yes, they have a somewhat of a following.
Thats actually what _"In Bloom"_ s about
@@almahperditae ya Kurt did not want or expect to be so big
Australian grunge
Silverchair
Song called "Tomorrow "
They were 15 and 16 year olds. Was popular during this period.

Nirvana in pyjamas 😂
Even better - Israel’s Son or Pure Massacre.
Ugh. Those songs got far too much airplay. I don’t think I can ever listen to them again.
Sliverchair 👍👍👍
Alice in Chains : Rain When I Die/Junkhead/Down In A Hole
Mad Season : Lifeless Dead/River Of Deceit/Wake Up
I'm from the Washington Seattle area and by far Alice in chains is the greatest of the big four they definitely get the most airtime and the radio.
@Rowan Melton wrong and I I'll tell you why, Layne just had more Harmony then Cornell ,it didn't matter if LAYNE sang high or low.
Hey guys! I just wanted to recommend an artist to review. I'm very surprised no one has recommended Radiohead yet. One of my favorite bands that has been famous for a long time and is still creating new music. Thanks!
Big nirvana fan. Very interesting to hear your take on the song. I enjoyed this video a lot.
man George just opened my eyes with that comment on the lyrics
With Nirvana you got straight to the point music and great melodies.
Kurt wasn't the greatest guitar player but the dude could write a killer hook.
I thought that too until I saw the unplugged version of 'Man Who Sold the World'. I never knew that was Kurt playing the solo. He's not shreddin' or anything but it's so tasteful and tuneful!
Oh yeah, this was the second song I ever learned on guitar, back when I was 13 (Smells Like Teen Spirit was the first!)
Still gotta suggest the Sludge Marathon!
Thinking back now, i remember learning this as a 16yr old. Those days feel long gone.
Slap on some Isis celestial or oceanic
@@xkkenai They seemed to like most of it that they've heard so far!
it's about his heroin addiction. so yeah, him saying he doesnt want to be associated with an "old friend" is accurate

Nirvana's appearance on MTV in 91 was the cultural beginning of the nineties. They changed everything, forcing the music industry out of eighties, changing multiple music genres aside from rock. People suddenly expected something different to what they'd heard over the past near decade.
Alice in Chains - Rain When I Die
Rain when i die and junkhead. Play them both! We dont mind a longer video.
Oh hell yeah.
Rain is my favorite AIC song
@@gtrriffs yes!!!!!!
They should also react to "We Die Young", "Grind" and perhaps some William DuVall era AIC songs.
Ryan Waggoner I have no doubt, play Come As You Are right after Happiness is a Warm Gun and you can easily hear the influence
That song is clearly about intercourse... or is it?
I love these nirvana videos and it’s crazy to see how their music is still relevant. If you wanna listen to bleach listen to “about a girl”!
What about school or negative creep though? Those are pretty legendary in my mind
Knowing what Cobain has gone through in his teen years, this song makes me tear up.
One of the best descriptions I’ve ever read on Kurt Cobain is “his voice spoke of a life as weathered as his jeans”.
It was in the Entertainment Weekly’s “100 Greatest Entertainers of the 20th Century”.
Kurt was 72 on the list, ahead of Neil Young
(!).
Thanls! I've been listening to this song for over 30 years and never even thought he had any intention with the lyrics, but your perspective makes perfect sense
Now do The Pixies “Where is my Mind.”
Texastentialist 1845 I second this!
Definitely yes. Also Sonic Youth Kool Thing.
They have waaaay better songs...
Never forget the first rule of Fight Club!
Gigantic... lmao!
“Cant get that image out of my face... out of... out of my mind...” lol!!! Now THAT’S a Freudian slip if I EVER heard one!!! Ahahahahahahhaha!!!
"Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach" were taken from a campaign in Seattle that encouraged heroin users to soak their needles in bleach after injecting to reduce the risk of spreading HIV. The phrase for the campaign was actually "If doused in mud, soak in bleach
I love the fact that you guys do reactions and reviews on all genres, and not just one 1. Much Love.
George has that music mind!!! I love it!!! keep it up boys!
“Say hello to heaven” temple of the dog... y’all keep not doing it I’ll keep commenting, got nothing but time and smart phone fellas.
Add Call Me A Dog, Pushin' Forward Back, Hunger Strike, Times of Trouble, All Night Thing any song from that album really it's just pure greatness.
One day
Yaaaaass!! They did “Fell in Black Days” which was not exemplary of what Cornell can do. I think they would like this one better!
Smokin' Jay is the GOAT
Hunger Strike is on their Patreon.
LMAOOO you snapped
A band you might want to include in your grunge marathon is Jane’s Addiction. They’re not really “grunge” but they are from the same time period. Try “Stop” or Mountain Song “
Three days. That would blow them away
@@coolhandchunk absolutely

Lounge Act off Nevrmind is my favourite off that album. Check it out
UP! That bass...
Came here to suggest Lounge Act
Lost in Vegas = best tune breakdown. Thank you for your service.
Such an iconic guitar lick. Now it's gonna be stuck in my head again.
Have to review “WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LASTNIGHT”🔥🔥
Live at MTV would be amazing. As would anything from Reading, my fave being D7. Two different sides of Nirvana
“SAY HELLO 2 HEAVEN “.
It's a quick burn but I really like "lounge act". Reminds me of the airfield level at night in nes ninja turtles game.
Almost a year late to comment on this but I love both of ya take on music period. I’m versatile in music period and I love how ya are open to listening to other music that maybe ya font know, that’s what makes me appreciate ya judgement and dissection even more.
Brilliant.
I’m laughing so hard 😂😂😂
George trying to find the deeper meaning........
Ryan “so the mud”
George “I don’t know”
