Even during the original series I thought Mitchum had a point. Rory was never really taking charge, even in her group project in school where she was supposed to be the leader, she stayed in the background. She was the non-confrontational, always by the books kinda girl that didn't handle any sort of failure or rejection well. Not exactly qualities that make a good journalist.

Rory's mistake was attempting to keep up the level of perfection she, and everyone around her, always expected from her. The second she realized this upkeep was impossible, she freaked and backed out.

I wished someone would have told her to get on her feet, stop wallowing and start working. When Michim told her she didn't have it, she just snapped instead of thinking why she doesn't have it. I have a hard time feeling bad for Rory. She'll inherit her grandparents' estate and she'll get a chunk of Christopher's so she's already ridiculously wealthy.

I think it was more that she had the “gifted child” experience. You excel in comprehension at a young age, so everyone praises you for being good at work that your peers don’t understand yet and you learn to believe that being smart comes naturally. Once the other kids catch up they’ve learned how to digest new material, where you’re confused for the first time and no longer receive the attention you were given for being ahead of the pack. Rory wasn’t just a gifted child, she was also the daughter her grandparents wished Lorelei had been, and deep down the girl Lorelei felt she should have been. A lot of expectations were placed on her at a young age, and as such she was showered in affection for exceeding in school. She was told by everyone that she was great simply for existing as she was, and once she had to actually work to prove herself she didn’t know how.

I honestly never thought she was as smart as everyone described her. I think she was pretty average. In fact, I think Lane was smarter. I think Rory wanted to be seen as smart so she read too much. And as per being accomplished, I think Paris was way more accomplished than her and actually worked hard to achieve it.
Nah she just had no resilience. If she was the classic smart child we wouldn't have seen her study etc. She truly loved school and was book smart but had no resilience. So when life threw some curve balls she couldn't cope
I think that she needed to fail on a larger scale to get back to who she really is, but I always believed that after what happens in the revival she gets her life back together, gets a job/publishes her book, gets her own place, and returns to her productive roots. Also, great video!
I think the book idea is massively overrated and an unhealthy product of what by this time is her undeserved, overinflated ego. I'd like to believe that she realises her privileged mindset, takes that teaching job she was offered at Chilton, gives the baby to Lorelai and Luke to raise, visits it on weekends, and eventually uses her hard work as a teacher to become the manager of a local TV station. That plays to her strengths as an organiser and to her desire to be involved in journalism, and grounds her in realism that not everyone, especially not those relatively unwilling to challenge themselves, becomes Christiane Amanpour. I'd also like to believe that Jess becomes a successful publisher and buys a chain of bookstores across the Eastern Seaboard, including Andrew's, and reconciles with Rory. I'd also like to believe that Logan confesses his cheating to his partner, they divorce, and he opens his own business as a stockbroker or something, where he can be corporate but risky and independent, and dates Lucy instead.

So glad so many now are seeing Rory for who she truly is. It's only with an adult's mind that you start to realize Logan's father was right about her. She was once again offered something most would only dream of being offered(a teaching job at an ivy league private school) and scuffs at it like it's beneath her. Rory's problem is that she always thought she was meant for greater things, when in reality it takes more than just being academically smart to succeed in life; Logan's father tried warning her and she titled him as a bully.
Yeah she could have negotiated and said she just wanted to try it out for a semester or agreed to do a yr but with a limited schedule like teaching 1 class only.
I get what you’re saying, but at the same time, if she didn’t want to be a teacher, don’t make her be a teacher. I’ve had teachers in the past who clearly didn’t want to be there and had no business being in front of a classroom. Just because the job was handed to her doesn’t mean she should take it.

If you're going to be a teacher, you need to actually want it. Many unpriviledged people have turned down teaching jobs because they couldn't measure up, and I don't see that as a bad thing.
I think she always wanted a rich lifestyle. Her mother left and was okay with how frugal they had to be. When Rory saw the food and lifestyle of her grandparents she wanted that. When she met Logan it was brought closer to her. She was never special and had dreams. But she was treated special too often by her grandparents and mother. She was led to believe she will be successful in journalism. They never punished or pointed out her bad behavior. They never considered she could not succeed in that field. It had to be so.
It’s shitty & stubborn writing. Ideally, Rory would have just accepted Logan’s marriage proposal in the original series’ finale. They clearly have great chemistry, and that marriage would have sustained her lifestyle + she would have been less likely to blow through her trust funds and inheritance in the (lazy) pursuit of a journalism career. It’s ironic because in the end, it’s obvious her & Logan have feelings & enjoy each other’s company but she chooses to play his mistress, when she could have been his rightful wife had she just SAID YES! She wanted the thrill of saying she made it without a man, but she was never really going to “make it”, at least not in the way that she had planned as a kid.
i understood that rory was a coddled brat the moment she panicked when queen paris geller told her that good grades and reading a lot of classics wasnt enough to get into ivy league colleges. like wtf. if she was so into harvard you would think she would've done more research instead of being entitled enough to think harvard was just waiting for another cookie cutter, boring, bland girl who's most interesting personality trait was having her mom as a best friend and being raised by said teenage mom all on her own.
And even when she did get in trouble she never really came to terms and said hey I was wrong I’m sorry about that like when she slept with a married Dean, she made excuses so often and no one stayed mad at her long enough to force some sort of an apology. I love that Gilmore Girls is not afraid to address reality, like how Rory turned out. I just hate how the character is over-judged, seeing the ‘downfall of Rory’ videos is soo annoying when so many people can relate to her story. Yes she’s privileged but after college that’s when real life happens and seeing your life being the opposite of what you wanted sucks, like people need to give her a break. We all learning and life is so weird, dealing with emotions and situations we’ve never faced before😭.I feel like this chapter of her life is just redirection of something new and redirection can be very uncomfortable. I agree 100%. People say she had too much but she started with nothing but lorelai, and ended with a lot of sweat and tears. She was handed an education but her life was never perfect and she persevered with her career
It’s not even just about her education and her privilege, she is also just a bad person. She cheated on everyone of her boyfriends and continued sleeping with a guy who had a fiancé and didn’t feel guilty about any of it. When one thing didn’t go her way she had a complete break down every time.

She grew up in a town where her and her mom were treated like angels that walked on water and her grandparents gave her whatever she wanted because of how their relationship with Lorelei had failed and were trying to have a do over daughter. The scene where the judge in court doesn’t give her special privileges because she’s rich and privileged was fantastic. And how surprised Rory Emily and Richard were was amazing
I have not seen one comment saying she's failed but a lot of comment defending her like that. Not liking her as a person , because of her actions have nothing to do with judging her career path. In the contrary the fact that dispite of her difficulties she continues to act like so entitled in the revival ( like forgetting the existence of her boyfriend while cheating on him) does not make her more likable at all.

I think they messed up when she went back to Yale. Like she didn't fully learn the lesson that was there for her. She should have taken it as a time to explore other avenues or find another internship or mentorship that could actually help her. She had all those resources at her disposal and she just went back to her same old status quo. 😂 sorry but looking back there was not as much character growth.
Honestly, I think we all saw it coming when Logan's dad told Rory that she doesn't put herself out there and just does as she's told. She's the perfect example of why most book smart people struggle finding a job after college
I think the Revival would have worked beautifully if it had the double of episodes… They could have shown how Rory’s life was a mess in the first part and on the second part explain how she put her life back together. I think the audience grew up with her at the same time, and we were not expecting a perfect Rory, because life is hard, but we wanted a human Rory who made mistakes and was lost but then she found herself and her own path in life, just like Lorelai did in the original series. The Revival simply didn’t give the character that much time to really make a development and instead, they just put a lot of random things on it without any context.

not figuring out her stuff and not continuing the golden child arch was the most relatable thing about rory tbh. the fact that she threw tantrums and went completely downhill with every little criticism, ran to her grandparents whenever her mom confronted her about something and left her grandparents the moment she doesn’t need them without being thankful, thought she had a right to sleep with other women’s boyfriends/husbands or cheat on her own partners, being a useless friend etc. everything about her was trash.
Her privilege and academic success at that age would make it impossible for her to realize not everyone can just be valedictorian and still have a social life. She would be wholly unequipped to understand why any given student might struggle with school.
I actually think she’d make an excellent teacher, shes just too elitist to realize it. She’s book smart and extremely empathetic, I always thought of that as her true aptitude.
@@sp691 I'm not so sure about the empathy honestly. It always seemed a bit fake to me, even during the original show, like she humored many characters rather than truly empathize. I'd describe her as being extremely non-confrontational, not extremely empathetic.
I've never watched this series but her story resonates with me so much. I used to be a "gifted" child that got into the most highly academic school. I struggled, but maintain the mindset "I'm just bad here because everyone is too smart, the fact I'm in this school still proves I'm one of the smartest kids out there". I held on to the "smart" identity, in high school I moved aboard and wouldn't stop moving schools until there's a school where I can be that girl with the best scores and have everyone praise me. Now in university, no one cares about grades anymore, I'm stressing out about career and self esteem, I can't make friends, I get into toxic relationships for bad reasons, just like Rory.... I know I can never be praised for being good at school anymore and I'm struggling to redefine myself. I do have intentions of dropping out too... I know Im selfish and insufferable like Rory but at the same time we're stuck in this bubble, we're a product of our past and environment, it will take time and pain for us to get out ...
Start volunteering or taking classes just for the hell of it. Broaden your horizons and your social circles. You will do great! Put as much ambition into people that are worth it as you do school.

I think that Logan messed her up for the rest of her life. He taught her how to have more fun and go with the flow and take risks, but Rory is suffering because of it. The difference between him and Rory is that even though Logan CLAIMED he was gonna start his own company, he was working for his dad by the time the revival came around. Colin, Robert, and Finn all had their trust funds so they never had to worry. Poor Rory forgot that she really isn't the same as them, she forgot where she came from. Rory has support from so many people that she forgot what it's like to have no options and to have to do something even if you don't like it. Paris, Jess, and Dean became successful because they knew they had nobody to bail them out. Rory should have been smart enough to see through Logan and how he's all talk no action. Rory should have either married him or never met him.
I think Logan is a shitty person and sometimes a shitty boyfriend, but you can't just make him responsible for all the Rory's life choices. The reason is that she IS just like them, she got the best education and she had her rich grandparents/dad to pay for it, she still can be finiancially supported by them, but considers herself to be a poor middle-class girl from a small town. The difference is that Logan at least aknowledges his privelege and he made a decision to stay under the wing of his rich parents following their conditions (aka marriage) and was content with it, Rory on the other side, still has not processed the fact that she IS extremely priveledged and has not accepted that may be she is not that exceptional that she thinks herself to be and needs to put work to become successful. The way she acted in the revival showed that she just expected everything to come to her without her doing anything, yet she still sees herself as very smart and hardworking (which she is not now) and I don't think that was all Logan's fault, basically Rory now needs to grow up, acknowledge her privelege, understand what is it that she wants from her life and start working towards her goals at last.
@@sashaweber3663 no no no no. Rory isn't the same as Logan. Logan has over 5 million in his TRUST FUND. He could never work if he wanted to and still live a decent life. He sinks yachts for fun and gets expelled from boarding schools. Rory got to go to Chilton because she worked HARD for the beginning of her life and was dedicated to getting a good higher education. She had to make a DEAL with her grandparents to go to Chilton, it didn't come for free. Rory was valedictorian and had dreams/goals. (Her career choice never suited her but she was smart!) Then she went to Yale and tried to take a bunch of hard classes and was trying to keep up with her grandfather. Then after a lot of unfortunate events, she decided to steal a yacht with LOGAN and of course he didn't care because he knew that his daddy would bail him out just like usual. If Rory was literally with ANYONE else, she wouldn't have done that. His influence made her do something like that. They are also not the same because Logan got away scotch free and Rory had to do community service. Even Logan's parents acknowledge that Rory didn't have the "proper upbringing". Rory is "priveleged" for arguments sake but compared to the crowd she was hanging with she was poor. She was nothing like most of the girls in Logan's community and couldn't relate to them. Rory only used her wealth to better her education and make her mom proud, she never blew money into the air just for the sake of it. Idk if you heard about some study done on the minds of kids born in the USA from immigrant parents. They have a torn sense of identity. I feel like Rory is kind of the same. She is constantly torn between two worlds. This is why I think she should've either married Logan or never met him. If she married him, she could fully embrace that world and never look back. She would be a Gilmore girl of high society. If she just never met him, she would probably be the same Rory we know and act more like Lorelei. It sucks for Rory because she can't act rich without Lorelei judging her and making fun of her and that's her best friend!! But she also gets interference from her grandparents whenever she needs help. I would say that the downfall of Rory is when she dated Logan and Christopher offered to pay tuition. Chris was really bailing her out with no strings attached. That was priveleged.
@Karina yeah Rory was shy but I think it's ok to be shy. The problem is that she had zero self awareness. I guess she saw herself as a confident confrontational person, but she wasn't. She's more open around her mom, but without her she never learned how to socialize on her own and she is pretty enough that nobody would bully her. I think that Rory really tried to copy Lorelei and didn't know HOW to be different and didn't NOTICE the differences. I mean Rory has ALLL of the same interests as her mom and almost all the same viewpoints. Wherever Rory tried to be different Lorelei would roast her or say some long monologue about how she's "been there and done that" and "Rory should know better". Really hypocritical considering Lorelei was a rebel child and got pregnant at 16. Anyhow I'll admit that Logan made Rory a little more social, but Logan's friends basically adopted Rory and she didn't care about anyone else enough to be real friends with them. I think the DAR taught her how to be social in high society but she's still a loner at heart and values alone time or is scared to make friends/doesn't care enough.
I disagree completely. I think Logan was the boyfriend rory needed in college, and i dont think he holds that much responsible for how rory turns out. First, Rory wasnt good with uncertainty, this is show when Jess questions Rory about journalism not being for her and she freaks out, is not that much news that doing things is harder than dreaming of them and living you dream life is actually passing through bad and good stuff on it, rory didnt know that, she liked the idea of the dream not the actual dream, thats why she freaked out and turn out in who she was, she didnt work in pressure and uncertainty, she needed the comfort of a small town where u dream about life, not in a fast city where u travel a lot, she is not ruthless, and this is build up on her since season three (or even before). Rory was a very smart kid in her teenage years - she worked hard to achieve the grades she wanted, got accepted into the top 3 schools in America, and then she failed. She didn’t fail in terms of academics, she failed in terms of life. First, by meeting Logan - obviously, her actions led to consequences, but those actions were influenced by Logan and this rich manner in which he and Rory were brought up in. She wanted everything handed to her on a golden plate, but we all know that that’s not the case in life. Logan always had a backup plan, and even if he didn’t manage to open his own company, he could always work for his father (which is what he did). He still made a living, but Rory - she had her ups and downs, and in the end, she just gave up. She wasn’t ready for all the competition and hardship of the real world, and failed to admit it. Her family failed to admit it. They knew it, but were always scared to point out her mistakes. That’s where she (and her relatives) went wrong.
How did Rory get into Yale, Harvard and Princeton is beyond my understanding. She sucked at her essay idea and they never showed how she turned it around. She only excelled in academics. Whereas Paris prepared for literally anything and everything and yet didn't get a chance. Rory is the main character who gets everything with a thousand loopholes in her whole character development
At first i was mad why didn't paris get in. And then when she played her interview recording lol i got it. It's not all about academics, being obnoxious like paris isnt gonan take u anywhere in this world
There was actually a foreshadowing in her academics that we never recognized ..in s1 or s2 when she got her PSAT scores ..she said to her mom that it was weird how she got better scores at math more than Reading, Writing & Language but we never thought it was a big deal....
Unpopular opinion but I think Rory is hated on too much here. Not everyone succeeds by the time they are 30. Is her worth really defined by her job situation? People change their career and jobs all the time-give her a break . I appreciate this realistic view.
It seems to be popular to hate on Rory, if you go to any Gilmore Girls comment section all the top comments are about how horrible she is as if she killed people. I stopped liking Rory as much after season 3 and I think the writers ruined her character but she's not completely bad and receives way too much hate.

I honestly think the whole storyline for rory gilmore would be totally different if she would go to Harvard. She would learn how to live a life just being on her own - no mommy's girl, not having grandparents luxury and distance from her town just figuring out her life by the challenges and ups and downs. I think it would make her strong, build self confidence and so on. Yale wasn't that far away from stars hollow so should could just come and go.
We can’t blame Rory’s downfall on Logan tho because when Rory slept with Dean whilst he was married to Lindsay and then when she missed her mum’s graduation to meet Jess this was all pre-Logan
It's hilarious to me all these people going off about how much of a failure Rory is in the comments. She's in her late twenties, early thirties at the oldest. It's literally the most turbulent and confusing time of someone's life. She's figuring it out. Just because she was born with a silver spoon and had a fancy education doesn't mean she'll be an immediate success. I like that ASP went a more realistic route with Rory's development, showing how hard it can be to make it when you're not sure what's next.

people don’t hate her just bc she hasn’t achieved anything career-vise. she was a passive person all throughout the series. she wasn’t really any help to anyone in town, her friends, her family etc. she’d talk about herself when lane was going through hell, didn’t do much for paris as well. and it just got worse as she grew up. she cheated or became the other woman in almost all of her relationships and never felt sorry for it, she used her grandparents anytime her mom didn’t support her and didn’t even think of being thankful once. she’s entitled enough to think that she deserves everything. other people’s boyfriends, being the president of stuff, being adored by her supervisors and going up the career steps easily etc.
Just thinking about how Paris was realistic and prepared the students from her lecture at a Chilton for the real world (which led to them all having emotional breakdowns) while Rory is having a conversation proving Paris’ point but still being in denial and pretending she’s okay with no job and nowhere to live
Rory's downfall caused by harsh reality. She was mentally and emotionally not ready for the real world out there waiting to ruin her. She was always praised and forgiven by the whole town, she never got to experience any drawbacks until adulthood. It's nice to see how she fell down hard so she can self respect and really rebuild everything from 0 again, just like her Dad i think.
honestly from what ive learned, what my mom said was true, she told me that not every smart/intellegent/bright kid doesn't always have to be successful in life. The problem with Rory is that she went through it all without having challenges except when she was in Chilton (thanks to Paris) and when she was in Yale, she couldn't take the criticism that Logan's dad told her and even worse, her grandparents didn't agree with Lorelai for Rory "taking a break" in her college.
I find it funny how many people think of Rory as spoiled.. I actually feel for her in the sense that almost everyone in her life had big expectations of her and wanted her to be somebody special and succeed so much in her academic life that her emotional well-being and mental health declined over the years. I actually think maybe if people wouldn't have pushed her so hard in that academic path she could have worked at a book publisher or wrote her own book sooner,or she could have managed young bands and/or authors.. She had many talents but people kept saying "you cannot drop out of school" and even several times when she stated how overwhelmed she was people wouldn't take her seriously just telling her she could do everything. From my personal experience that kind of "reassurance" from your family can also often become a burden and make you feel like failing or not meeting their expectations would be the end of the world. Therefore,you start to feel like being studious is somehow your personality but I saw Rory's personality as more sensitive,emotional and also fragile she had a lot of unresolved issues and people would never give her time to work on them,she always had to be productive. Yes I guess she has a wealthy background but still mental health is nothing that can be fixed just with money .. I get why she lost her passion for school,her drive,her love life with Logan also affected her negatively.. it's life.. and she's human and cannot always function like a machine would..

i really am was rooting for rory's character after she graduated in yale and when she and logan split. right from the start, i really admired her passionate, driven, and goal oriented qualities as a character and i'm sure it would've made her go into places in life and really have a successful and stable career. It's unfortunate how the writers messed rory's character in the last season and in the revival. i'm just saying she could've had a chracter development and a better ending. you know finally settled, and not living under lorelai's, grandmother's, or even her friends' shadow. finally living her ambitions and all just what she's been dreaming and working on her whole life as rory.
Unfortunately its realistic. Its how life sometimes works. Sometimes trauma and mental health and well life gets in the way. Sometimes these gifted kids end up lost burned out adults. It doesnt always happen to hardworkers or special people, but it still happens. Plus rory wasnt that special, she didnt have it. She was just a good student
Rory is the example of many smart children out there and how they aren't too successful which i find refreshing. But i disagree that Rory wasn't driven. When given a task, Rory excels at it. We saw this when she planned that party for Emily. When Rory wants to socialize, she's great at it. But the problem is that Rory simply doesn't care about anything other than getting into Harvard and reading. Unless she's told to do something, she will never actually do it. She's a simple girl. She's like a ball of potential that can only be unlocked or used with a key. Even when Rory was offered a chance to write some speech at Chilton she wasn't going to because it wasn't required until Lorelei encouraged her. Love or hate Rory, i find her very relatable. A lot of us have something holding us back in life.
I don't think people hate Rory because of her downfall. They begin to hate her in the later seasons because she acts like her entitlement and privilege don't exist, and yet thinks she's owed certain things, like validation. I also think people (myself included) don't like her because of the writers. The writers just did a really bad job with her after season 3 and in the revival. It didn't feel like Rory. While a lot of people in her position do end up finding themselves in a rut, this is just poor writing. People could accept Rory's downfall if it was written better, and it was used to fuel her life in other ways, but it wasn't.
My favorite line in the series came from Paris: "You look like little birds help you get dressed." This is Rory's blessing and curse. Everyone wanted to like and root for her, but that made her very soft and spoiled.
I remember when I rewatched GG in college i would roll by eyes whenever Lorelei would make excuses for Rory like how she only has to apply to one school because “Rory is different” and “she’s special”. Rory definitely took that as her safety cushion and never punched herself after chilton to get where she wanted to go
Honestly it would have been so interesting for Rory have crisis in her adulthood where she realized that she has an issue of not being able to handle setbacks and her obsession for everything to go her way. It would resonate with alot of people.
I feel for Rory in that she had everyone tell her she was perfect, and there was so much pressure from every direction to do well for everyone else, that I don't think she ever actually grew up or spent time deciding what she wanted for herself. Lorelai had to completely split from her parents to decide who she was, meanwhile Rory had who she was decided for her, by everyone - including her mom, her grandparents, and Logan. And any time she failed, the people around her didn't know what to do with her, because she was the "responsible" one. And sadly, despite her mom's lessons, she fell into the pit that her mom ran away from. Rory is a sad character, but as many others said, she won't struggle in most "regular" ways because her family is so loaded and will always protect her financially. But emotionally and mentally...yikes. She was a bomb waiting to blow up since Logan entered the picture. I wish her and Jess could get back together. When they reunited later in the series, he was so good at pushing her to not be what he wanted, but what he knew she wanted to be. And he always supported her decisions. I think because he knew a lot of what she was going through, even if she didn't see it going on herself.
I don’t see Rory rebounding. She’s like a child prodigy. Everyone’s there for you and impressed by your talent in youth but the older you get the less people care. Then you’re left with early burn out and abandoned by your fans. You lose faith in yourself and you don’t get it back.
Haven’t finished season 6 or season 7 of Gilmore girls, but this plot in the revival series just further scares me as a young adult myself. Rory was insanely smart, & she still ended up where she is now. She has no place of her own and is left babysitting Paris’s kids. She’s left still talking about the possibilities of what could’ve been her future. Im not like a valedictorian or super smart as Rory, but I feel like college and life will eat me alive if I dont figure out plan a to plan z.
The truth is i can sympathize with her struggling with the transition to adulthood and the real world, i can understand it must have been tough to stomach that she is just normal and that not everything would always be handed to her. But for crying out loud. Her rejecting a teaching position that just falls on her lap? At that point it's infuriating and honestly you can tell why she hasnt been "doing well", its literally cause she lacks humility. Maybe she's actually had several opportunities like that through the years but she's turned them all down because she feels she's above it all and since she isnt starving or anything because everyone in her life is STILL coddling her she's in no hurry to accept anything other than the bestest most special opportunity
Lorelei flies across the country to backpack the PCT to “find herself” or whatever and she won’t be able to contact Rory because she won’t be near cell towers in the middle of the woods, a strong parallel to dream Lorelei flying to Hawaii and not being able to talk to Rory.
The problem is that Rory adopted her spending habits from Logan and Lorelei. If Rory had a clue about investing like Richard and most wealthy people, she would've been able to make her trust fund last and even expand it. But she probably wasted it all on rent, restaurants, expenses, etc. Lorelei was never financially literate but she had a goal (the inn) and reached it by saving money which allowed her to be successful. Someone like Luke created wealth by never spending money on anything and owning properties (collecting rent). Rory was throwing money down the drain like Logan and Lorelei but without any dreams/goals/ or backup plans. What a waste. It shows that her head was truly in the clouds. This is why it's not all about being rich/wealthy. If you are stupid, you could have a million dollars and still end up poor!! Only verrrrry few people have so much money that it's actually worthless. Even if Logan didn't step up and help his dad's company, their wealth would have decreased significantly eventually. Rory was truly meant to be a housewife or at least not have had so many people lie to her face about journalism.

Although I despise late seasons' Rory, watching this and realizing that the conclusion of the show was not so far off, unironically breaks my heart. It breaks my heart AND it depresses me a bit. Because it's a depiction that's most closely ressembling the reality for many people if anything.
It's so ridiculous when people talk of Rory's "downfall"😆 We all have crises like this in our life and we grow through them. she is still very young at the end of the series and there can be so much ahead for her still. Who has it all figured out by the time they are 30? (which is super young)
I feel like you only understand Rory if you are paying really really close attention. Its kind of like her like how she is so good at reading the things that are not being said, like how Logan defended Rory but didn't deny his father's claim or when in the revival when she saw her dad and he said there wasn't room for him in their dynamic and then Rory suspected her mother didn't make room for him. I think Rory is like that because I think that is part of what it means to be a good reader. Like I read Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen recently and literally half the content of the book exists in the implication, which you have to pick up all the clues for what they actually mean or deduce what Austen means when she uses sarcasm, which is most of the book. Most things are not expressed directly, just deduced by implication, if you can read the implication. I feel like it harkens back to when authors had to hide the meaning behind their book out of fear, like in Alice in wonderland and Don Quixote

What was the point of Gilmore Girls? I've always been curious. Has it been to make us dislike Rory and her inflated ego? Because each season she got more and more aggravating. I think we're supposed to admire Lane and Paris, because they improve and improve, and we're supposed to start out liking Rory, but grow to dislike her. I think the show wanted to subvert our expectations.
I think the intention was to make Rory an actual person by the end, rather than a "relatable"(=self insert) main character that doesn't have a believable arc. Or maybe it's bad writing, take your pick

But the problem was that she never learned from any of it and just kept making the same mistakes. Definitely could be bad writing, but I don't think it's a bad show, even if I dislike Rory. I actually have rewatched it several times. It's a very interesting story.
That's what I like about this show; none of it's characters are super human, they're just human. Rory became exactly the kind of failure we all knew she'd be.
The only way the revival would work is with a follow up series, opening with Rory travelling around with her daughter, not speaking anymore with Lorelai (after the rift the cheat pregnancy caused). Basically Rory's version of her own upbringing, trying to right her wrongs (with Lorelai becoming a softer version of Emily)!
Ok, i understand rory, i was a gofted child nd i got the best scores on my school once i got into uni i ran out of money, i wasnt doing well academically and i ended with diagnoses with a learning difficultie making learning basic math in a month imposible no matter how much i would study. I get out of uni and now im trying to keep going making courses and working. Just saying you cant hate rory when you share sm in common, in my case it was my dad and i was living his dreams sonce he couldn't get into uni because money problems.
I personally believe Rory should have had a tailored version of Violet from Mom's season 1/2 storyline. Have her get pregnant by Logan her freshman year at Yale and grapple with the weight of that unplanned pregnancy. Have people (namely her grandparents) disappointed in her for the first time in her life. Have her struggle to balance school and pregnancy. Have Lorelai struggle with her role in the situation and whether or not she could have prevented this from happening. Have Logan sell Rory a fairytale of them being a family before realizing that he is in fact a 19 year old who has as little maturity as she does. Have her choose not to follow down Lorelai's path and be a young single mother but instead choose to place her baby for adoption so she can pursue the career she dreamed of forever. Have Lorelai feel heartbroken and rejected about this decision and have them fight about it before coming to an understanding. Have Rory pick a family with similar wealth but in a more new age way (I like the idea of keeping the adopted dad as a video game designer like he is in Mom) and have her family turn their noses up at this before getting to know them. Then the following season have her struggle with the grief and whether or not she deserves to have a good life after all this. Have her act out in an attempt to find herself again (the yacht stealing incident etc.). And then have her build back better and go on to make a documentary about her experience as a birth mother. It's a realistic storyline as daughters of teen mothers are 66% more likely to get pregnant young too and I think it would have given her strength , life experience and lit a fire under her in a way nothing else would have. It would also would have been cool to have her add to the dinner table like Lorelai did. I know she gets pregnant with Logan in the revival but in my opinion it's too little too late.
I think the original idea before the writers changed was that she was going to get pregnant at Yale, I don’t know about adopting the baby out though, I think they were going for Lorelei single mother again
Chilton was the mistake. She could have gotten into an Ivy league without Chilton. It came into her life at a very critical stage and so did her rich grand parents
Rory didn't fail, the writers failed her by shoe-horning her into this ending despite her having the nightmare in the first place. Not that her ending in itself is a failure, really. But I'll never truly believe this is where Rory would've ended up, even though they messed up her character in the later seasons. She went overseas and just hung out with Logan? Come on.
It seemed to me like the whole journalism field had changed by the year 2016, like Rory was hustling a lot before the revival but it is hard as a freelancer. Kinda scary that fresh out of college kids were getting great job offers back then and now Rory can't get anything? or maybe she could and wasn't interested in small papers anymore. Shoulda taken the providence job
Everyone has their own view of what led to her downfall but i think it's rooted in her daddy issues which really surfaced in her boyfriend choices...also with her family name, money and looks i think if we saw a continuation of the series then she'd actually end up successful in the end
while i would have hoped that rory would live out her dreams and be successful, I guess her story arc made sense. she was a spoiled girl that's been the gem of her entire town and family her entire life. she was never really pushed and never faced the consequences for her mistakes. obviously by the time she grows up she isn't going to be able to handle the adult life. it's sad, but true, and I've seen it happen with many of my cousins that were raised this type of way.
Truth. My best friend and I talk about this a lot. Basically being spoiled and rich sounds fun when you’re a kid but it’s not doing you any good later in life. Even in the upper class you must grow up and experience reality and other adults. Even in the upper class it doesn’t mean no law applies to you, doesn’t mean everything is free, etc.
At the end of _A Year in the Life,_ at age 32/33, Rory is in the same position as her mother was when she was *_half_* her age. She's pregnant, and the father is a wealthy and attractive, but ultimately unserious man who refuses to grow up and settle down -- at least not with her -- and she has no current means to take care of herself or place to live of her own. Rory is the age Lorelai was in the *_Pilot._* I can't imagine anyone who was a fan of the show would still have been if _Pilot_ Lorelai had been of the same maturity as _Year in the Life_ Rory.
Actually I don’t even believe she entered Yale like this- we didn’t see her studying that much, instead her relationships with others and her two lovers before uni. Of course its for show drama, but Its not realistic to being accepted to Yale like this, maybe also because of their family who studied in Yale ,she got accepted.
tbh Rory is just somebody who reads a lot, in my opinion she never showed much independent thinking, problem solving skills or leadership skills. She was just the good girl that had a lot of theoretical knowledge of what is going on in books, but showing initiative or the descibed above was not her strength. She was good at being obedient, ie doing what other people told her to do. Mitchum‘s criticism on her journalism skills and that she was more of an assistant at that point were correct in my point of view, I mean up until then, she was praised for doing exactly what she was asked to do in school and in Yale, so she was taught that this is the right thing to do to become successful: you get a task, get it done well and thats it = description of what an assistant does. So at that stage in life, I believe Mitchum‘s criticism shouldnt have crushed her the way it did (which was only reinforced by her mother‘s reaction à la „how dare you say something unpleasant about my perfect kid“), but should have been taken as a kick in the butt to take the initiative to change behaviours that worked before, but now it is time to do the grown up thing and put the knowledge to practise. I mean Mitchum would never have gotten to the position that he was in if he had been a nice person like Rory (if he is likable is another discussion, but it cannot be denied that he is successful). This could have been taken as a life lesson that success in journalism might include being like Mitchum or dealing with people like Mitchum and then maybe deciding that it wasnt for her, but she was crushed on a personal level that made her crumble and question all of her lifes choices up to this point, again, being reinforced by her family who criticized everybody who would question Rory‘s perfection.
I hope they made atleast another movie let them see us a successful rory gilmore😕 we've been waiting for how many years just to see her really successful it's been her goal since she was a kid.
I’m just watching the 6th season. She was so rude to her grandparents. They worshipped her and even took her in when she needed comfort. Such an ungrateful b… and Lorelai not telling her “hey, stop being a jerk to your grandparents!”.

if rory had acknowledged she was going through a bad patch and her situation wasn’t ideal she would have been able to take opportunities and get back on her feet; it’s her denial that anything is wrong and her insistence on not settling for anything other than perfection and immediate success straight off that is really the problem
At that time in tv history…. we had Roseanne, Malcolm in the Middle, Degrassi High, the Simpsons. Like the kids used to cuss, slap their parents, lie, steal and even kill. Rory was a saint compared to them and the most realistic.

Hate that Rory gets tagged with "gifted kid" when she's so obviously not. Gifted kids have a specific set of qualities unique to them (there's a cool table on google contrasting smart and gifted). If anything, I'd say Paris is properly gifted. Rory's just smart.

Even during the original series I thought Mitchum had a point. Rory was never really taking charge, even in her group project in school where she was supposed to be the leader, she stayed in the background. She was the non-confrontational, always by the books kinda girl that didn't handle any sort of failure or rejection well. Not exactly qualities that make a good journalist.

Rory's mistake was attempting to keep up the level of perfection she, and everyone around her, always expected from her. I think it was more that she had the “gifted child” experience. You excel in comprehension at a young age, so everyone praises you for being good at work that your peers don’t understand yet and you learn to believe that being smart comes naturally.
Once the other kids catch up they’ve learned how to digest new material, where you’re confused for the first time and no longer receive the attention you were given for being ahead of the pack.
Rory wasn’t just a gifted child, she was also the daughter her grandparents wished Lorelei had been, and deep down the girl Lorelei felt she should have been. A lot of expectations were placed on her at a young age, and as such she was showered in affection for exceeding in school.
She was told by everyone that she was great simply for existing as she was, and once she had to actually work to prove herself she didn’t know how.

I honestly never thought she was as smart as everyone described her. I think she was pretty average. In fact, I think Lane was smarter. I think Rory wanted to be seen as smart so she read too much. And as per being accomplished, I think Paris was way more accomplished than her and actually worked hard to achieve it.
Nah she just had no resilience. If she was the classic smart child we wouldn't have seen her study etc. She truly loved school and was book smart but had no resilience. So when life threw some curve balls she couldn't cope
I think that she needed to fail on a larger scale to get back to who she really is, but I always believed that after what happens in the revival she gets her life back together, gets a job/publishes her book, gets her own place, and returns to her productive roots. Also, great video!
I think the book idea is massively overrated and an unhealthy product of what by this time is her undeserved, overinflated ego.
I'd like to believe that she realises her privileged mindset, takes that teaching job she was offered at Chilton, gives the baby to Lorelai and Luke to raise, visits it on weekends, and eventually uses her hard work as a teacher to become the manager of a local TV station. That plays to her strengths as an organiser and to her desire to be involved in journalism, and grounds her in realism that not everyone, especially not those relatively unwilling to challenge themselves, becomes Christiane Amanpour.
I'd also like to believe that Jess becomes a successful publisher and buys a chain of bookstores across the Eastern Seaboard, including Andrew's, and reconciles with Rory. I'd also like to believe that Logan confesses his cheating to his partner, they divorce, and he opens his own business as a stockbroker or something, where he can be corporate but risky and independent, and dates Lucy instead.

So glad so many now are seeing Rory for who she truly is. It's only with an adult's mind that you start to realize Logan's father was right about her. She was once again offered something most would only dream of being offered(a teaching job at an ivy league private school) and scuffs at it like it's beneath her. Rory's problem is that she always thought she was meant for greater things, when in reality it takes more than just being academically smart to succeed in life; Logan's father tried warning her and she titled him as a bully.

I think she always wanted a rich lifestyle. Her mother left and was okay with how frugal they had to be. When Rory saw the food and lifestyle of her grandparents she wanted that. When she met Logan it was brought closer to her. She was never special and had dreams. But she was treated special too often by her grandparents and mother. She was led to believe she will be successful in journalism. They never punished or pointed out her bad behavior. They never considered she could not succeed in that field. It had to be so.
It’s shitty & stubborn writing. Ideally, Rory would have just accepted Logan’s marriage proposal in the original series’ finale. They clearly have great chemistry, and that marriage would have sustained her lifestyle + she would have been less likely to blow through her trust funds and inheritance in the (lazy) pursuit of a journalism career. It’s ironic because in the end, it’s obvious her & Logan have feelings & enjoy each other’s company but she chooses to play his mistress, when she could have been his rightful wife had she just SAID YES! She wanted the thrill of saying she made it without a man, but she was never really going to “make it”, at least not in the way that she had planned as a kid.
i understood that rory was a coddled brat the moment she panicked when queen paris geller told her that good grades and reading a lot of classics wasnt enough to get into ivy league colleges. like wtf. if she was so into harvard you would think she would've done more research instead of being entitled enough to think harvard was just waiting for another cookie cutter, boring, bland girl who's most interesting personality trait was having her mom as a best friend and being raised by said teenage mom all on her own.

I love that Gilmore Girls is not afraid to address reality, like how Rory turned out. I just hate how the character is over-judged, seeing the ‘downfall of Rory’ videos is soo annoying when so many people can relate to her story. Yes she’s privileged but after college that’s when real life happens and seeing your life being the opposite of what you wanted sucks, like people need to give her a break. We all learning and life is so weird, dealing with emotions and situations we’ve never faced before😭.I feel like this chapter of her life is just redirection of something new and redirection can be very uncomfortable. I agree 100%. People say she had too much but she started with nothing but lorelai, and ended with a lot of sweat and tears. She was handed an education but her life was never perfect and she persevered with her career
It’s not even just about her education and her privilege, she is also just a bad person. She cheated on everyone of her boyfriends and continued sleeping with a guy who had a fiancé and didn’t feel guilty about any of it. When one thing didn’t go her way she had a complete break down every time.

She grew up in a town where her and her mom were treated like angels that walked on water and her grandparents gave her whatever she wanted because of how their relationship with Lorelei had failed and were trying to have a do over daughter. The scene where the judge in court doesn’t give her special privileges because she’s rich and privileged was fantastic. And how surprised Rory Emily and Richard were was amazing

I have not seen one comment saying she's failed but a lot of comment defending her like that. Not liking her as a person , because of her actions have nothing to do with judging her career path. In the contrary the fact that dispite of her difficulties she continues to act like so entitled in the revival ( like forgetting the existence of her boyfriend while cheating on him) does not make her more likable at all.

I think they messed up when she went back to Yale. Like she didn't fully learn the lesson that was there for her. She should have taken it as a time to explore other avenues or find another internship or mentorship that could actually help her. She had all those resources at her disposal and she just went back to her same old status quo. 😂 sorry but looking back there was not as much character growth.

Honestly, I think we all saw it coming when Logan's dad told Rory that she doesn't put herself out there and just does as she's told. She's the perfect example of why most book smart people struggle finding a job after college
I think the Revival would have worked beautifully if it had the double of episodes… They could have shown how Rory’s life was a mess in the first part and on the second part explain how she put her life back together.
I think the audience grew up with her at the same time, and we were not expecting a perfect Rory, because life is hard, but we wanted a human Rory who made mistakes and was lost but then she found herself and her own path in life, just like Lorelai did in the original series.
The Revival simply didn’t give the character that much time to really make a development and instead, they just put a lot of random things on it without any context.
I don't think it needed more episodes, they just had to cut the ridiculous amount of screen time they spent in the pointless musical.

not figuring out her stuff and not continuing the golden child arch was the most relatable thing about rory tbh. the fact that she threw tantrums and went completely downhill with every little criticism, ran to her grandparents whenever her mom confronted her about something and left her grandparents the moment she doesn’t need them without being thankful, thought she had a right to sleep with other women’s boyfriends/husbands or cheat on her own partners, being a useless friend etc. everything about her was trash.

Her privilege and academic success at that age would make it impossible for her to realize not everyone can just be valedictorian and still have a social life. She would be wholly unequipped to understand why any given student might struggle with school.
I actually think she’d make an excellent teacher, shes just too elitist to realize it. She’s book smart and extremely empathetic, I always thought of that as her true aptitude.

@@sp691 I'm not so sure about the empathy honestly. It always seemed a bit fake to me, even during the original show, like she humored many characters rather than truly empathize. I'd describe her as being extremely non-confrontational, not extremely empathetic.
I've never watched this series but her story resonates with me so much. I used to be a "gifted" child that got into the most highly academic school. I struggled, but maintain the mindset "I'm just bad here because everyone is too smart, the fact I'm in this school still proves I'm one of the smartest kids out there". I held on to the "smart" identity, in high school I moved aboard and wouldn't stop moving schools until there's a school where I can be that girl with the best scores and have everyone praise me. Now in university, no one cares about grades anymore, I'm stressing out about career and self esteem, I can't make friends, I get into toxic relationships for bad reasons, just like Rory.... I know I can never be praised for being good at school anymore and I'm struggling to redefine myself. I do have intentions of dropping out too... I know Im selfish and insufferable like Rory but at the same time we're stuck in this bubble, we're a product of our past and environment, it will take time and pain for us to get out ...
Start volunteering or taking classes just for the hell of it. Broaden your horizons and your social circles. You will do great! Put as much ambition into people that are worth it as you do school.

I think that Logan messed her up for the rest of her life. He taught her how to have more fun and go with the flow and take risks, but Rory is suffering because of it. The difference between him and Rory is that even though Logan CLAIMED he was gonna start his own company, he was working for his dad by the time the revival came around. Colin, Robert, and Finn all had their trust funds so they never had to worry. Poor Rory forgot that she really isn't the same as them, she forgot where she came from. Rory has support from so many people that she forgot what it's like to have no options and to have to do something even if you don't like it. Paris, Jess, and Dean became successful because they knew they had nobody to bail them out. Rory should have been smart enough to see through Logan and how he's all talk no action. Rory should have either married him or never met him.
I think Logan is a shitty person and sometimes a shitty boyfriend, but you can't just make him responsible for all the Rory's life choices. The reason is that she IS just like them, she got the best education and she had her rich grandparents/dad to pay for it, she still can be finiancially supported by them, but considers herself to be a poor middle-class girl from a small town. The difference is that Logan at least aknowledges his privelege and he made a decision to stay under the wing of his rich parents following their conditions (aka marriage) and was content with it, Rory on the other side, still has not processed the fact that she IS extremely priveledged and has not accepted that may be she is not that exceptional that she thinks herself to be and needs to put work to become successful. The way she acted in the revival showed that she just expected everything to come to her without her doing anything, yet she still sees herself as very smart and hardworking (which she is not now) and I don't think that was all Logan's fault, basically Rory now needs to grow up, acknowledge her privelege, understand what is it that she wants from her life and start working towards her goals at last.

@@sashaweber3663 no no no no. Rory isn't the same as Logan. Logan has over 5 million in his TRUST FUND. He could never work if he wanted to and still live a decent life. He sinks yachts for fun and gets expelled from boarding schools. Rory got to go to Chilton because she worked HARD for the beginning of her life and was dedicated to getting a good higher education. She had to make a DEAL with her grandparents to go to Chilton, it didn't come for free. Rory was valedictorian and had dreams/goals. (Her career choice never suited her but she was smart!) Then she went to Yale and tried to take a bunch of hard classes and was trying to keep up with her grandfather. Then after a lot of unfortunate events, she decided to steal a yacht with LOGAN and of course he didn't care because he knew that his daddy would bail him out just like usual. If Rory was literally with ANYONE else, she wouldn't have done that. His influence made her do something like that. They are also not the same because Logan got away scotch free and Rory had to do community service. Even Logan's parents acknowledge that Rory didn't have the "proper upbringing". Rory is "priveleged" for arguments sake but compared to the crowd she was hanging with she was poor. She was nothing like most of the girls in Logan's community and couldn't relate to them. Rory only used her wealth to better her education and make her mom proud, she never blew money into the air just for the sake of it. Idk if you heard about some study done on the minds of kids born in the USA from immigrant parents. They have a torn sense of identity. I feel like Rory is kind of the same. She is constantly torn between two worlds. This is why I think she should've either married Logan or never met him. If she married him, she could fully embrace that world and never look back. She would be a Gilmore girl of high society. If she just never met him, she would probably be the same Rory we know and act more like Lorelei. It sucks for Rory because she can't act rich without Lorelei judging her and making fun of her and that's her best friend!! But she also gets interference from her grandparents whenever she needs help. I would say that the downfall of Rory is when she dated Logan and Christopher offered to pay tuition. Chris was really bailing her out with no strings attached. That was priveleged.
@Karina yeah Rory was shy but I think it's ok to be shy. The problem is that she had zero self awareness. I guess she saw herself as a confident confrontational person, but she wasn't. She's more open around her mom, but without her she never learned how to socialize on her own and she is pretty enough that nobody would bully her. I think that Rory really tried to copy Lorelei and didn't know HOW to be different and didn't NOTICE the differences. I mean Rory has ALLL of the same interests as her mom and almost all the same viewpoints. Wherever Rory tried to be different Lorelei would roast her or say some long monologue about how she's "been there and done that" and "Rory should know better". Really hypocritical considering Lorelei was a rebel child and got pregnant at 16. Anyhow I'll admit that Logan made Rory a little more social, but Logan's friends basically adopted Rory and she didn't care about anyone else enough to be real friends with them. I think the DAR taught her how to be social in high society but she's still a loner at heart and values alone time or is scared to make friends/doesn't care enough.
I disagree completely. I think Logan was the boyfriend rory needed in college, and i dont think he holds that much responsible for how rory turns out. First, Rory wasnt good with uncertainty, this is show when Jess questions Rory about journalism not being for her and she freaks out, is not that much news that doing things is harder than dreaming of them and living you dream life is actually passing through bad and good stuff on it, rory didnt know that, she liked the idea of the dream not the actual dream, thats why she freaked out and turn out in who she was, she didnt work in pressure and uncertainty, she needed the comfort of a small town where u dream about life, not in a fast city where u travel a lot, she is not ruthless, and this is build up on her since season three (or even before). Rory was a very smart kid in her teenage years - she worked hard to achieve the grades she wanted, got accepted into the top 3 schools in America, and then she failed. She didn’t fail in terms of academics, she failed in terms of life. First, by meeting Logan - obviously, her actions led to consequences, but those actions were influenced by Logan and this rich manner in which he and Rory were brought up in. She wanted everything handed to her on a golden plate, but we all know that that’s not the case in life. Logan always had a backup plan, and even if he didn’t manage to open his own company, he could always work for his father (which is what he did). He still made a living, but Rory - she had her ups and downs, and in the end, she just gave up. She wasn’t ready for all the competition and hardship of the real world, and failed to admit it. Her family failed to admit it. They knew it, but were always scared to point out her mistakes. That’s where she (and her relatives) went wrong.

How did Rory get into Yale, Harvard and Princeton is beyond my understanding. She sucked at her essay idea and they never showed how she turned it around. She only excelled in academics. There was actually a foreshadowing in her academics that we never recognized ..in s1 or s2 when she got her PSAT scores ..she said to her mom that it was weird how she got better scores at math more than Reading, Writing & Language but we never thought it was a big deal....

Unpopular opinion but I think Rory is hated on too much here. Not everyone succeeds by the time they are 30. Is her worth really defined by her job situation? People change their career and jobs all the time-give her a break . I appreciate this realistic view.

It seems to be popular to hate on Rory, if you go to any Gilmore Girls comment section all the top comments are about how horrible she is as if she killed people. I stopped liking Rory as much after season 3 and I think the writers ruined her character but she's not completely bad and receives way too much hate.

I honestly think the whole storyline for rory gilmore would be totally different if she would go to Harvard. She would learn how to live a life just being on her own - no mommy's girl, not having grandparents luxury and distance from her town just figuring out her life by the challenges and ups and downs. I think it would make her strong, build self confidence and so on. Yale wasn't that far away from stars hollow so should could just come and go.

It's hilarious to me all these people going off about how much of a failure Rory is in the comments. She's in her late twenties, early thirties at the oldest. It's literally the most turbulent and confusing time of someone's life. She's figuring it out. Just because she was born with a silver spoon and had a fancy education doesn't mean she'll be an immediate success. I like that ASP went a more realistic route with Rory's development, showing how hard it can be to make it when you're not sure what's next.

Rory's downfall caused by harsh reality. She was mentally and emotionally not ready for the real world out there waiting to ruin her. She was always praised and forgiven by the whole town, she never got to experience any drawbacks until adulthood. It's nice to see how she fell down hard so she can self respect and really rebuild everything from 0 again, just like her Dad i think.
honestly from what ive learned, what my mom said was true, she told me that not every smart/intellegent/bright kid doesn't always have to be successful in life. The problem with Rory is that she went through it all without having challenges except when she was in Chilton (thanks to Paris) and when she was in Yale, she couldn't take the criticism that Logan's dad told her and even worse, her grandparents didn't agree with Lorelai for Rory "taking a break" in her college.

I find it funny how many people think of Rory as spoiled.. I actually feel for her in the sense that almost everyone in her life had big expectations of her and wanted her to be somebody special and succeed so much in her academic life that her emotional well-being and mental health declined over the years. I actually think maybe if people wouldn't have pushed her so hard in that academic path she could have worked at a book publisher or wrote her own book sooner,or she could have managed young bands and/or authors.. She had many talents but people kept saying "you cannot drop out of school" and even several times when she stated how overwhelmed she was people wouldn't take her seriously just telling her she could do everything. From my personal experience that kind of "reassurance" from your family can also often become a burden and make you feel like failing or not meeting their expectations would be the end of the world. Therefore,you start to feel like being studious is somehow your personality but I saw Rory's personality as more sensitive,emotional and also fragile she had a lot of unresolved issues and people would never give her time to work on them,she always had to be productive. Yes I guess she has a wealthy background but still mental health is nothing that can be fixed just with money .. I get why she lost her passion for school,her drive,her love life with Logan also affected her negatively.. it's life.. and she's human and cannot always function like a machine would..

i really am was rooting for rory's character after she graduated in yale and when she and logan split. right from the start, i really admired her passionate, driven, and goal oriented qualities as a character and i'm sure it would've made her go into places in life and really have a successful and stable career. It's unfortunate how the writers messed rory's character in the last season and in the revival. i'm just saying she could've had a chracter development and a better ending. you know finally settled, and not living under lorelai's, grandmother's, or even her friends' shadow. finally living her ambitions and all just what she's been dreaming and working on her whole life as rory.
Unfortunately its realistic. Its how life sometimes works. Sometimes trauma and mental health and well life gets in the way. Sometimes these gifted kids end up lost burned out adults. It doesnt always happen to hardworkers or special people, but it still happens. Plus rory wasnt that special, she didnt have it. She was just a good student

Rory is the example of many smart children out there and how they aren't too successful which i find refreshing. But i disagree that Rory wasn't driven. When given a task, Rory excels at it. We saw this when she planned that party for Emily. When Rory wants to socialize, she's great at it. But the problem is that Rory simply doesn't care about anything other than getting into Harvard and reading. Unless she's told to do something, she will never actually do it. She's a simple girl. She's like a ball of potential that can only be unlocked or used with a key. Even when Rory was offered a chance to write some speech at Chilton she wasn't going to because it wasn't required until Lorelei encouraged her. Love or hate Rory, i find her very relatable. A lot of us have something holding us back in life.
I don't think people hate Rory because of her downfall. They begin to hate her in the later seasons because she acts like her entitlement and privilege don't exist, and yet thinks she's owed certain things, like validation. I also think people (myself included) don't like her because of the writers. The writers just did a really bad job with her after season 3 and in the revival. It didn't feel like Rory. While a lot of people in her position do end up finding themselves in a rut, this is just poor writing. People could accept Rory's downfall if it was written better, and it was used to fuel her life in other ways, but it wasn't.

This is Rory's blessing and curse. Everyone wanted to like and root for her, but that made her very soft and spoiled.
I remember when I rewatched GG in college i would roll by eyes whenever Lorelei would make excuses for Rory like how she only has to apply to one school because “Rory is different” and “she’s special”. Rory definitely took that as her safety cushion and never punched herself after chilton to get where she wanted to go
Honestly it would have been so interesting for Rory have crisis in her adulthood where she realized that she has an issue of not being able to handle setbacks and her obsession for everything to go her way. It would resonate with alot of people.

I feel for Rory in that she had everyone tell her she was perfect, and there was so much pressure from every direction to do well for everyone else, that I don't think she ever actually grew up or spent time deciding what she wanted for herself. Lorelai had to completely split from her parents to decide who she was, meanwhile Rory had who she was decided for her, by everyone - including her mom, her grandparents, and Logan. And any time she failed, the people around her didn't know what to do with her, because she was the "responsible" one. And sadly, despite her mom's lessons, she fell into the pit that her mom ran away from.
Rory is a sad character, but as many others said, she won't struggle in most "regular" ways because her family is so loaded and will always protect her financially. But emotionally and mentally...yikes. She was a bomb waiting to blow up since Logan entered the picture. I wish her and Jess could get back together. When they reunited later in the series, he was so good at pushing her to not be what he wanted, but what he knew she wanted to be. And he always supported her decisions. I think because he knew a lot of what she was going through, even if she didn't see it going on herself.
I don’t see Rory rebounding. She’s like a child prodigy. Everyone’s there for you and impressed by your talent in youth but the older you get the less people care. Then you’re left with early burn out and abandoned by your fans. You lose faith in yourself and you don’t get it back.
Haven’t finished season 6 or season 7 of Gilmore girls, but this plot in the revival series just further scares me as a young adult myself. Rory was insanely smart, & she still ended up where she is now. She has no place of her own and is left babysitting Paris’s kids. She’s left still talking about the possibilities of what could’ve been her future. Im not like a valedictorian or super smart as Rory, but I feel like college and life will eat me alive if I dont figure out plan a to plan z.
The truth is i can sympathize with her struggling with the transition to adulthood and the real world, i can understand it must have been tough to stomach that she is just normal and that not everything would always be handed to her. But for crying out loud. Her rejecting a teaching position that just falls on her lap? At that point it's infuriating and honestly you can tell why she hasnt been "doing well", its literally cause she lacks humility. Maybe she's actually had several opportunities like that through the years but she's turned them all down because she feels she's above it all and since she isnt starving or anything because everyone in her life is STILL coddling her she's in no hurry to accept anything other than the bestest most special opportunity

Lorelei flies across the country to backpack the PCT to “find herself” or whatever and she won’t be able to contact Rory because she won’t be near cell towers in the middle of the woods, a strong parallel to dream Lorelei flying to Hawaii and not being able to talk to Rory.
The problem is that Rory adopted her spending habits from Logan and Lorelei. If Rory had a clue about investing like Richard and most wealthy people, she would've been able to make her trust fund last and even expand it. But she probably wasted it all on rent, restaurants, expenses, etc. Lorelei was never financially literate but she had a goal (the inn) and reached it by saving money which allowed her to be successful. Someone like Luke created wealth by never spending money on anything and owning properties (collecting rent). Rory was throwing money down the drain like Logan and Lorelei but without any dreams/goals/ or backup plans. What a waste. It shows that her head was truly in the clouds. This is why it's not all about being rich/wealthy. If you are stupid, you could have a million dollars and still end up poor!! Only verrrrry few people have so much money that it's actually worthless. Even if Logan didn't step up and help his dad's company, their wealth would have decreased significantly eventually. @@Skyebright1 it's just so embarrassing. Rory went from a young beautiful woman freshly graduated from Yale to an adulterer that forces her man to break off his engagement due to pregnancy. I'll never understand how it got to this point. If she was 25/27 it could be understandable, but 32!!? How are you making these kinds of mistakes at that age?? We're talking about 10 years later still with the same guy but no desire for marriage?? Make it make sense
I wonder if the creator of the show knew a 'Rory', saw her as completely fake, and this is how we got the revival that we did.
Keep in mind that the revival had a different director.
Although I despise late seasons' Rory, watching this and realizing that the conclusion of the show was not so far off, unironically breaks my heart.
It breaks my heart AND it depresses me a bit. Because it's a depiction that's most closely ressembling the reality for many people if anything.
It's so ridiculous when people talk of Rory's "downfall"😆 We all have crises like this in our life and we grow through them. she is still very young at the end of the series and there can be so much ahead for her still. Who has it all figured out by the time they are 30? (which is super young)
I feel like you only understand Rory if you are paying really really close attention. Its kind of like her like how she is so good at reading the things that are not being said, like how Logan defended Rory but didn't deny his father's claim or when in the revival when she saw her dad and he said there wasn't room for him in their dynamic and then Rory suspected her mother didn't make room for him. I think Rory is like that because I think that is part of what it means to be a good reader. Like I read Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen recently and literally half the content of the book exists in the implication, which you have to pick up all the clues for what they actually mean or deduce what Austen means when she uses sarcasm, which is most of the book. Most things are not expressed directly, just deduced by implication, if you can read the implication. I feel like it harkens back to when authors had to hide the meaning behind their book out of fear, like in Alice in wonderland and Don Quixote

What was the point of Gilmore Girls? I've always been curious. Has it been to make us dislike Rory and her inflated ego? Because each season she got more and more aggravating. I think we're supposed to admire Lane and Paris, because they improve and improve, and we're supposed to start out liking Rory, but grow to dislike her. I think the show wanted to subvert our expectations.
I think the intention was to make Rory an actual person by the end, rather than a "relatable"(=self insert) main character that doesn't have a believable arc. Or maybe it's bad writing, take your pick
@@detrik01 Wait, but isn't "an actual person" the same thing as "relatable"? I actually think some of the garbage she did was good for the story. It made her less perfect. But the problem was that she never learned from any of it and just kept making the same mistakes. Definitely could be bad writing, but I don't think it's a bad show, even if I dislike Rory. I actually have rewatched it several times. It's a very interesting story.
Lane? She fkd up worse. Peollw just like her because she's considered to be in a minority.
That's what I like about this show; none of it's characters are super human, they're just human. Rory became exactly the kind of failure we all knew she'd be.

The only way the revival would work is with a follow up series, opening with Rory travelling around with her daughter, not speaking anymore with Lorelai (after the rift the cheat pregnancy caused). Basically Rory's version of her own upbringing, trying to right her wrongs (with Lorelai becoming a softer version of Emily)!
Ok, i understand rory, i was a gofted child nd i got the best scores on my school once i got into uni i ran out of money, i wasnt doing well academically and i ended with diagnoses with a learning difficultie making learning basic math in a month imposible no matter how much i would study.
I get out of uni and now im trying to keep going making courses and working.
Just saying you cant hate rory when you share sm in common, in my case it was my dad and i was living his dreams sonce he couldn't get into uni because money problems.
I personally believe Rory should have had a tailored version of Violet from Mom's season 1/2 storyline. Have her get pregnant by Logan her freshman year at Yale and grapple with the weight of that unplanned pregnancy. Have people (namely her grandparents) disappointed in her for the first time in her life. Have her struggle to balance school and pregnancy. Have Lorelai struggle with her role in the situation and whether or not she could have prevented this from happening. Have Logan sell Rory a fairytale of them being a family before realizing that he is in fact a 19 year old who has as little maturity as she does. Have her choose not to follow down Lorelai's path and be a young single mother but instead choose to place her baby for adoption so she can pursue the career she dreamed of forever. Have Lorelai feel heartbroken and rejected about this decision and have them fight about it before coming to an understanding. Have Rory pick a family with similar wealth but in a more new age way (I like the idea of keeping the adopted dad as a video game designer like he is in Mom) and have her family turn their noses up at this before getting to know them. Then the following season have her struggle with the grief and whether or not she deserves to have a good life after all this. Have her act out in an attempt to find herself again (the yacht stealing incident etc.). And then have her build back better and go on to make a documentary about her experience as a birth mother. It's a realistic storyline as daughters of teen mothers are 66% more likely to get pregnant young too and I think it would have given her strength , life experience and lit a fire under her in a way nothing else would have. It would also would have been cool to have her add to the dinner table like Lorelai did. I know she gets pregnant with Logan in the revival but in my opinion it's too little too late.
I think the original idea before the writers changed was that she was going to get pregnant at Yale, I don’t know about adopting the baby out though, I think they were going for Lorelei single mother again
Chilton was the mistake. She could have gotten into an Ivy league without Chilton. It came into her life at a very critical stage and so did her rich grand parents
Her not taking the teaching job was the stupidest mistake. She would be good at it and it would give her a career
Rory didn't fail, the writers failed her by shoe-horning her into this ending despite her having the nightmare in the first place. Not that her ending in itself is a failure, really. But I'll never truly believe this is where Rory would've ended up, even though they messed up her character in the later seasons. She went overseas and just hung out with Logan? Come on.

It seemed to me like the whole journalism field had changed by the year 2016, like Rory was hustling a lot before the revival but it is hard as a freelancer. Kinda scary that fresh out of college kids were getting great job offers back then and now Rory can't get anything? or maybe she could and wasn't interested in small papers anymore. Shoulda taken the providence job

Everyone has their own view of what led to her downfall but i think it's rooted in her daddy issues which really surfaced in her boyfriend choices...also with her family name, money and looks i think if we saw a continuation of the series then she'd actually end up successful in the end

while i would have hoped that rory would live out her dreams and be successful, I guess her story arc made sense. she was a spoiled girl that's been the gem of her entire town and family her entire life. she was never really pushed and never faced the consequences for her mistakes. obviously by the time she grows up she isn't going to be able to handle the adult life. it's sad, but true, and I've seen it happen with many of my cousins that were raised this type of way.
Truth. My best friend and I talk about this a lot. Basically being spoiled and rich sounds fun when you’re a kid but it’s not doing you any good later in life. Even in the upper class you must grow up and experience reality and other adults. Even in the upper class it doesn’t mean no law applies to you, doesn’t mean everything is free, etc.
At the end of _A Year in the Life,_ at age 32/33, Rory is in the same position as her mother was when she was *_half_* her age. She's pregnant, and the father is a wealthy and attractive, but ultimately unserious man who refuses to grow up and settle down -- at least not with her -- and she has no current means to take care of herself or place to live of her own.
Rory is the age Lorelai was in the *_Pilot._* I can't imagine anyone who was a fan of the show would still have been if _Pilot_ Lorelai had been of the same maturity as _Year in the Life_ Rory.
Hopefully Logan does step up and marry her

Actually I don’t even believe she entered Yale like this- we didn’t see her studying that much, instead her relationships with others and her two lovers before uni. Of course its for show drama, but Its not realistic to being accepted to Yale like this, maybe also because of their family who studied in Yale ,she got accepted.

tbh Rory is just somebody who reads a lot, in my opinion she never showed much independent thinking, problem solving skills or leadership skills. She was just the good girl that had a lot of theoretical knowledge of what is going on in books, but showing initiative or the descibed above was not her strength. She was good at being obedient, ie doing what other people told her to do. Mitchum‘s criticism on her journalism skills and that she was more of an assistant at that point were correct in my point of view, I mean up until then, she was praised for doing exactly what she was asked to do in school and in Yale, so she was taught that this is the right thing to do to become successful: you get a task, get it done well and thats it = description of what an assistant does. So at that stage in life, I believe Mitchum‘s criticism shouldnt have crushed her the way it did (which was only reinforced by her mother‘s reaction à la „how dare you say something unpleasant about my perfect kid“), but should have been taken as a kick in the butt to take the initiative to change behaviours that worked before, but now it is time to do the grown up thing and put the knowledge to practise. I mean Mitchum would never have gotten to the position that he was in if he had been a nice person like Rory (if he is likable is another discussion, but it cannot be denied that he is successful). This could have been taken as a life lesson that success in journalism might include being like Mitchum or dealing with people like Mitchum and then maybe deciding that it wasnt for her, but she was crushed on a personal level that made her crumble and question all of her lifes choices up to this point, again, being reinforced by her family who criticized everybody who would question Rory‘s perfection.
She does demonstrate qualities that are beneficial to a corporate career. It's just that no one ever encouraged her to apply them.

I’m just watching the 6th season. She was so rude to her grandparents. They worshipped her and even took her in when she needed comfort. Such an ungrateful b… and Lorelai not telling her “hey, stop being a jerk to your grandparents!”.

At that time in tv history…. we had Roseanne, Malcolm in the Middle, Degrassi High, the Simpsons. Like the kids used to cuss, slap their parents, lie, steal and even kill. Rory was a saint compared to them and the most realistic.
She should have become a food journalist and eat around the world.
People love to call Rory a failure... But how is she a failure? She graduated from a great school and leads a fullfilling life?
They are talking about the revival though not rory from Gilmore girls so that isn't necessarily true. Although I don't call ppl failures as everyone can go through ups and downs in life and failure is just shame producing for no reason.

She is not, she has had some success, but this was not a great time in her life and the only time we get to see her so it's disappointing.
Now - like it say - she's homeless, jobless and is cheating her boyfriend with a married man (Logan). And she can't babysit. If you're watch your friend's children, don't ignore them. Plus she seems to be selfish in the revival.

I feel like the revival should have had her not be a cheater with logan but be friends with him she should had ended up with jess and his baby not logan. This is coming from a anti jess person....but they really matured his character and he was the one to get her to go back to uni and write her book. The share a deeper similar bond than dean or logan ever could
Hate that Rory gets tagged with "gifted kid" when she's so obviously not. Gifted kids have a specific set of qualities unique to them (there's a cool table on google contrasting smart and gifted). If anything, I'd say Paris is properly gifted. Rory's just smart.
