Idk i think it’s more than just lack of communication, because they do try to convey things to each other. It’s that there is a lack of emotional honesty and empathy for the individual’s emotional needs. If the grandparents had been people who could be depended upon to support, or at least respect, Lorelei’s decision to not marry once she got pregnant, then we wouldn’t have had a show.

I think a lot of us forget that Emily was also a “Gilmore Girl”. Her story was heavily intertwined into Lorelai and Rory’s as we slowly got the chance to unfold some reasons as to why she is the way she is. From her strained relationship with Lorelai, to her rocky roads with Richard, to her seemingly inferior moments with Richard’s mother and more, we simply see that she is complicated woman with a beating heart at the end of the day. We like to blame her and call her the villain because of her overt toxicity, but in reality, they all have extremely toxic ways. As do we all as human beings. That’s a part of the human experience. Now, she would not exactly be the idea of a fantastic mother and she is very manipulative. I think all of us can say that we could probably run away if we were in Lorelai’s shoes. But in those moments when she is more vulnerable, we almost understand her. I’m not saying she’s the best person ever, but there is something very admirable about her, in my opinion. I’ve never seen her as evil. She’s more than that. This has always been my favorite show in the world and no matter how many times I’ve seen it, I can’t help but love Emily Gilmore.

@Mercy Wow, you must all nail motherhood effortlessly! 😲 I never said that Emily was an innocent victim, sure she messed it up... in a number of ways that you've pointed out! I wouldn't have wanted her as a mother (especially not as an only child) but I also don't wanna in how mang regards I will fail as a mother one day. God knows I've had a problematic relationship with my ...complicated... mother, but if there's one thing I realized it's how troubled the souls of failed mother figures like mine are and that many are at least aware of (think a lot about) that fragile mother- child- relationship. Unfortunately there is such a thing as emotional intelligence which isn't Emily Gilmore's strongest trait. I never quite knew if the woman lacks self-awareness including remorse or if she's just too vain to show it. Afterall, everyone makes mistakes yet she could've made the first step over the years, signalize she's ready for a dialogue to her only child etc. Neither her nor Richard did, but they sure felt bad about how things went South, otherwise they wouldn't have tried twice as hard with Rory. Bottom line Emily sure had some things coming, yet she got feelings, too, a great deal of them actually. I personally believe she didn't need to her that statement to know she's failed as a mother in one way or another.

The more I think about the plane scene, the more I realise what an important moment it is for Emily. At first it seems like her meltdown is a huge overreaction to her fight with Rory, but there's a lot more to it than that. I think that Emily's pain here comes not just from Rory moving out, but because the situation forces her to realise the part she played in her estrangement from Lorelai. Emily has always refused to admit that her controlling and judgemental behaviour had anything to do with driving Lorelai away. In her mind, she did everything right by Lorelai, and Lorelai was the bad egg of the family who couldn't appreciate how good she had it. Emily then saw Rory as a second chance to prove that she could raise a model young lady, and that Lorelai's rejection of this lifestyle didn't reflect on her at all. But this backfires when even Rory, who is much more docile and more comfortable with high society life than Lorelai, can't bear the suffocating life Emily pushes her into, and runs away from it just like her mother did. At this point, Emily is forced to see herself as the common factor, and realise that her actions have caused not only a rift between herself and her granddaughter, but a lifetime of friction, pain, and missed opportunities with her daughter. I think her breakdown on the plane is the first moment that really hits home for her (I know she goes on about how many good things she did for Rory, but I think a lot of that is a defense mechanism, and that her tearful "It's my fault. It's all my fault" was much more genuine). This moment, in my mind, is a huge turning point for Emily. Although she doesn't suddenly completely change her attitude towards Lorelai (it would be unrealistic if she did), we do see her making more of a genuine effort to be supportive of Lorelai's life choices after this. Previously, her attitude towards Lorelai's relationship with Luke was, at best, begrudging acceptance. But in later episodes, she actively tries to include Luke in the family. She invites him for dinner to try and get to know him (rather than just to demean him like she did the first time he had dinner with her), she tries to bond with the girl she thinks is his daughter, and she wants to buy him and Lorelai a house they'll both like for a wedding present. Then, when Lorelai tells her the wedding isn't going to happen, she's genuinely sympathetic - the Emily of earlier seasons would likely have given Lorelai a lecture or barbed comment about not being able to keep a man. She shows the same sympathy when Lorelai tells her she's divorcing Christopher, the man she's spent years pushing her to be with. By the end of the show, she hasn't completely softened or stopped making mistakes, but she's started to become more aware of how her actions affect Lorelai, and to make a conscious effort to accept her daughter for who she is.
Apologies for the essay! All this to say that the plane scene is a beautiful and important scene, and Kelly (and Lauren) played it perfectly.

Emily's character is the result of her own up bringing. She was raised to hold certain beliefs about a wife's duty and what a woman should want for herself, and tried her best to give all that to Lorelai- but Lorelai just didn't want it. It was neither of their's fault but equally if they had just listened or spoke to one another a bit more, so much trouble could have been avoided. Ultimately, I like Emily. She may seem stubborn and unreasonable at times, but the way glimpses of her true emotions towards Richard, Lorelai and Rory are revealed just makes me love her and sympathise with her more!

I think a lot of the family dynamics that led lorelai to leave home was also influenced by Richard, her father. Multiple times through the series I've seen his rigid patriarchal side and how he wanted his daughter/granddaughter to be a certain way in order for him to accept them. Emily also had to face that all through her life and it even caused a rift in their marital life later in the series. While Emily is no doubt a strong woman, she had to navigate her way in a society where the slightest vulnerability or imperfection was picked and highlighted. So it was hard for her to communicate with her very fiercely independent daughter. Lorelai made her choice by leaving home, not the most well-thought, mature choice, but she was 16 at that time and she was one of the rare few who know who they are and what they want early in their lives. I think this show does an incredible job of depicting life. How no one choice is right or wrong. Everyone acts according to their own nature and at every point in life they have some challenges and some privileges.

I'm seeing a lot of people here saying that Lorelei was too proud and ungrateful and should have tried better to mend her relationship with her mother. While I do agree that Lorelei is stubborn to a fault, y'all are forgetting that while Emily does care deeply for her family, she is still manipulative as hell. She refuses to respect Lorelei's boundaries and violates them several times, she goes behind her back over and over again, and actively tries to ruin Lorelei's relationship with Luke because Emily still wants to control Lorelei's love life. All while also trying to form Rory into the version of Lorelei that they wanted but never had and demeaning and degrading Lorelei's career and efforts as a mother. She rarely tries to understand or validate her daughter without using that to manipulate her. The minute Lorelei bends even the slightest bit, Emily tries to take over. Then when Lorelei gets upset and tries to reestablish her boundaries, Emily plays the victim. Given how that pattern happens over and over and over again, Lorelei has every right to not trust Emily, and I completely understand why she spends so long refusing to let her mother in. Does that mean Lorelei handled every situation perfectly? No, Lorelei also has a lot of growing to do. But y'all have to understand that no matter how good her intentions are, Emily can be an incredibly toxic, controlling, and manipulative person. While Lorelei could use several lessons in effective communication and relationship building, she doesn't deserve to be vilified for the stubbornness and frustration with which she approaches her relationship with Emily. She knows she has to have boundaries, otherwise Emily will walk all over her and go right back to hyper controlling her life.

As someone who has watched this series too many times to count, I completely agree. The judgement, manipulation, scheming, etc. was horrible. As was the fact that Emily would criticize Lorelei for not accepting help then hold it over her head when she finally did. Even the snide comments like when Lorelei told Emily someone they knew had shot her husband and Emily responded by saying “at least she had a husband to kill”. Emily jumped at every opportunity to rear Lorelei down. I mean the things she’d say about Loreleis’s house! There was that scene where Lorelei attempted to help Emily deal with Richard’s mother who disapproved of her just like Emily disapproved of Lorelei. I especially liked when Lorelei pointed out that she was teaching Emily how to cope in the same way she copes. I thought that would be a turning point but nope Emily kept on being Emily.

My words exactly. You could see that Lorelai did try to give Emily another chance, even multiple times. But always, the moment things started going better, Emily ruined it again with her need to control everything.
You can't buy your kid with money, which is something that many people here seem to think somehow ? They talk about how ungrateful Lorelai was, but gosh, she couldn't breathe in that household and I feel her. You can have everything fancy and still feel like you are in the prison.
Emily might love Lorelai, but she didn't try to change. She refused to ever step back, she refused that maybe what happened between her and Lorelai could partially be her fault.
And honestly, my absolute favourite scene in the show is after Luke and Lorelai get back together and Emily comes to the Diner...
‶Please hear me. If I want your input in my life in any way, shape or form, I will ask for it. Until then, do us all a favor and SHUT UP!″
The power of this moment is just huge. You can see how Lorelai finally tells Emily what she thinks, that anger in her eyes... wow.
Lauren Graham deserves an Oscar for that.

a big problem with their relationship is communication, but its also the fact that Emily (and Richard for that matter) do things for Lorelei or rory convinced its for them but in reality its for them. she rattles off the things she did for Rory but she never really asked her if she wanted any of that. in some cases she literally forced it on Rory. that's the difference between being a helpful, guiding parent versus a micromanager whose kid never truly truly grows up or moves far away. asking if they want your help.

I think the reason Lorelai was emotionally stunted which transferred over to her romantic relationships is that she was emotionally neglected by her parents whilst growing up. It was apparent that her parents weren’t the affectionate types and it’s unlikely they regularly told their daughter they loved her. The Gilmores didn’t really know how to convey their feelings (their real ones) and mask it with constant disagreements/criticisms. And as far as Lorelai’s relationship with Rory goes, part of it is that she was growing up too and didn’t really have a good model for parenting. Her parents did the best they could with what they had, but Lorelai wasn’t build from the same mold. And she wasn’t what they expected. None of them are really wrong/right. The show did an amazing job of exploring the complexity of familiar relationships.

Yes, when you’re teenager (she was late blooming) you have this outbursts where you don’t care about anybody else but yourself. But there has to be retaliation. That’s what parenting and growing up is all about.
It looked like in the end the only thing that was important for Lorelai wasn’t the fact that Rory dropped out of Yale, but the fact that she went to her grandparents seeking for help what annoyed her the most.
She says is tough love but as soon as she’s back she doesn’t tell her anything. She’s just happy Rory isn’t with her grandparents anymore.

It’s so funny everyone is so quick to try and decide who was the better character and I just always feel in awe of the original shows depth of character for everyone in that world, it’s such a good show because it is so painfully human, where each character has their shining moments and their bad moments and bad choices and bizarre hang ups and I find myself constantly shifting my perspective and understanding with each episode of these very densely written characters and their story as they live it

Even thought Emily would be considered a text book narcissist when I comes to Lorelei she’s still an interesting character. Honestly I see this mom- daughter dynamics pretty relatable each one becoming the better mother in the process even with all their issues

Lorelai is much more mature than people give her credit for. Because as someone who also has this type of stranded and damaged relationship with my mother i would have never been as nice and sweet as she still is to Emily, even if my mother cried in front of me like that after all she did. Seeing the way Lorelai acts with such grace gives me hope that maybe one day me and my mother could treat each other with basic respect once again, or that i could try to do so after the resentment partially heals

I love the show but watching in retrospect there were so many unnecessarily awkward and dramatic moments. All families have problems, but cringing like that when the friend says "she was like a mother to you" feels so over the top!

I get why she and lorelei always clashed. Lorelei just never take anything too seriously and like her mother said her humor is off putting. She doesnt know when and where to place her attitude
Lorelei is good for a drink buddy, popular good humored but sometimes unreliable when it comes to more mature responsibility. Shes really not as clever as she thinks. Her self reliance is admirable but rory is a testament why we cant always be besties with our mothers because we need them to be mothers.
Emily has these common narcissistic traits that makes her insufferable but you cant help but feel bad for her sometimes. Thats good writing right there

I love Emily as a woman she has such a beautiful strength. She knows her worth and value and her place in society. When her only daughter left it had to have devastated her she loves that girl. But I understand why Lorelei did what she did.

She really deserved better from Richard. Everyone gives Lorelai shit but Richard was her husband, and partner. He constantly degraded what was important to her and lied to her about his ex for years and let his mother treat Em like crap. They have a sweet relationship but their separation was 100% his fault

If Emily is such a good mother how come she wants her daughter to marry Christopher just because he is from a good family rather that Luke as we all know he loved both Lorelai and Rory and was there for them ALWAYS? What mother puts more value on her child's social status than happiness? As a mother myself, I DO NOT understand Emily's actions sometimes...
