Sometimes I wish we got an episode fully dedicated to Emily’s past. Like maybe when she married Richard or was pregnant with lorelai or maybe her meeting Richard.
Yes!!! Sometimes I do sympathize with Emily, especially now I'm rewatching the series yet again, it's nice to focus on her face and see the emotion she tries to hide.
Idk i think it’s more than just lack of communication, because they do try to convey things to each other. It’s that there is a lack of emotional honesty and empathy for the individual’s emotional needs. If the grandparents had been people who could be depended upon to support, or at least respect, Lorelei’s decision to not marry once she got pregnant, then we wouldn’t have had a show.
@@freeassange402 I think she definitely has a character arc, and knows how many of Lorelai’s issues can be blamed on her, but I agree. I wouldn’t want her to be my mother.
Emily is very hypocritical on that point. Emily lost the argument even when she said what did and Mia was so kind to let her go. Emily should of simply thanked her for looking after the girls. Mia understood that telling Lorelai what to do was not what she needed at that time.
Gilmore girls is really good at that no one is right all the time (there’s probably a better way to word that lol) Because Lorelai and Emily’s fractured relationship is on both sides, because Emily never asked Lorelai to leave, but Emily will hold a grudge when hurt... I’ve watched the show through many times and I really admire how well the characters are written, it’s just my opinion but I think they did a really good job of making multi-faceted characters and showing that people have both good qualities and bad ones
@Maria Zyka Yamog Luke was being driven crazy by Lorelai. It's crazy to think that after all those years of waiting for her she was still so immature in that relationship which transferred to Luke and it became a mess
@@megmur1766 Lorelei was my favourite watching the first time but over other watches she became my least favourite. The reunion ruined Luke and Loreleii relationship. The early seasons had really deep moments between the two. You would think that the final season would have them settled after going through everything they did together. I would have expected they both were helping others similar to themselves in that final season as both showed a lot of compassion and support for people they identified with. It's kinda normal as you get older to stop making messes and help and support others. But the show writers wanted messes
No way 🤤 She would insult all of us!! doesnt believe you would like her in real life.... because she would behave like she is above you and me. If you have money like a queen, you are great educated and you have a realy importand Family Name than she will be your best Friend...and Welcome you otherwise hide behind a curten😂🤣🤣 and wait that lorelei defend your lifestyl.
I know Emily can be a bit horrible to Lorelei, but she does love her daughter and family. She works hard to make them have the perfect life she was told to have growing up. At some points I feel bad for her, she feels like she’s loosing her family and that must feel awful
@@freeassange402 I know she can be horrible to Lorelei but she’s trying to be better and wants a relationship with her daughter. She stands up for Lorelei too
I think a lot of us forget that Emily was also a “Gilmore Girl”. Her story was heavily intertwined into Lorelai and Rory’s as we slowly got the chance to unfold some reasons as to why she is the way she is. From her strained relationship with Lorelai, to her rocky roads with Richard, to her seemingly inferior moments with Richard’s mother and more, we simply see that she is complicated woman with a beating heart at the end of the day. We like to blame her and call her the villain because of her overt toxicity, but in reality, they all have extremely toxic ways. As do we all as human beings. That’s a part of the human experience. Now, she would not exactly be the idea of a fantastic mother and she is very manipulative. I think all of us can say that we could probably run away if we were in Lorelai’s shoes. But in those moments when she is more vulnerable, we almost understand her. I’m not saying she’s the best person ever, but there is something very admirable about her, in my opinion. I’ve never seen her as evil. She’s more than that. This has always been my favorite show in the world and no matter how many times I’ve seen it, I can’t help but love Emily Gilmore.
She is for better or worse a product of her environment and time. She has certain ideas of how a person should be in society and felt she needed to instill that into her daughter and granddaughter.
@@gwynethdelacruz9456 I can understand it (maybe because like all of my friends talk really fast) but it just feels wrong to watch it without subtitles
On the plane scene, Lorelai found the correct words to say at the end and she is completely right. I love those lines. It's heartbreaking still, the distance that exists in the family. Emily's so sad and upset and she doesn't even get a hug 😢
Because Emily TOLD HER to leave her alone and let her "be vain and shallow"! She was embarrassed to become so emotional in a (technically) public place! She's too proud for that kind of vulnerability! Lorelai staying and trying to comfort her would've just angered her.
Emily standing up for Jason and Lorelei is one of my favorite moments of the series. Richard caring more about his business than his family was the finale straw to Emily. Unfortunately Emily and richard reconciled too quickly imo. It should of last awhile long imo. Although i will say i do enjoy the episode with them bonding over the dog
I never did like Richard. He’s portrayed as the kind and wise grandfather but in reality he was mean and manipulative. Listen to the stories he tells the girls of him being a bully and an overall douchebag (all told gleefully!) when he was younger, and you really won’t be surprised how he chose business over family and chooses to mentally abuse his daughter whenever she disappoints him. Typical rich kid douchebag.
@Mercy Wow, you must all nail motherhood effortlessly! 😲 I never said that Emily was an innocent victim, sure she messed it up... in a number of ways that you've pointed out. I wouldn't have wanted her as a mother (especially not as an only child), but I also don't wanna know in how many different regards I will fail as a mother one day. God knows I've often had a rather challenging relationship with my mother, but if there's one thing I've realized it's how troubled the souls of mother figures like mine are, and that many are at least aware of / think a lot about the fragility of mother-child-relationships. The key is, there's such a thing as emotional intelligence... which - you guessed it - isn't Emily Gilmore's strong suit. I never quite knew if the woman lacked self-awareness (including remorse) or if she's just too vain to show it. Everyone makes mistakes yet she could've made the first step over the years, signalize she's ready for a dialogue to her only child etc. Neither her nor Richard did that, but I'm sure they felt bad about how things went south, otherwise they wouldn't have tried twice as hard with Rory. Bottom line Emily sure had some things coming, yet she got feelings, too, a great deal of them actually. I personally believe she didn't need to hear that statement to know she failed as a mother.
@Mercy I wish they would make a show dedicated solely on lorelai growing up I don’t support those actions of Emily but sometimes I do feel for her and I wish we could get some insight as to how lorelais childhood really was
The more I think about the plane scene, the more I realise what an important moment it is for Emily. At first it seems like her meltdown is a huge overreaction to her fight with Rory, but there's a lot more to it than that. I think that Emily's pain here comes not just from Rory moving out, but because the situation forces her to realise the part she played in her estrangement from Lorelai. Emily has always refused to admit that her controlling and judgemental behaviour had anything to do with driving Lorelai away. In her mind, she did everything right by Lorelai, and Lorelai was the bad egg of the family who couldn't appreciate how good she had it. Emily then saw Rory as a second chance to prove that she could raise a model young lady, and that Lorelai's rejection of this lifestyle didn't reflect on her at all. But this backfires when even Rory, who is much more docile and more comfortable with high society life than Lorelai, can't bear the suffocating life Emily pushes her into, and runs away from it just like her mother did. At this point, Emily is forced to see herself as the common factor, and realise that her actions have caused not only a rift between herself and her granddaughter, but a lifetime of friction, pain, and missed opportunities with her daughter. I think her breakdown on the plane is the first moment that really hits home for her (I know she goes on about how many good things she did for Rory, but I think a lot of that is a defense mechanism, and that her tearful "It's my fault. It's all my fault" was much more genuine). This moment, in my mind, is a huge turning point for Emily. Although she doesn't suddenly completely change her attitude towards Lorelai (it would be unrealistic if she did), we do see her making more of a genuine effort to be supportive of Lorelai's life choices after this. Previously, her attitude towards Lorelai's relationship with Luke was, at best, begrudging acceptance. But in later episodes, she actively tries to include Luke in the family. She invites him for dinner to try and get to know him (rather than just to demean him like she did the first time he had dinner with her), she tries to bond with the girl she thinks is his daughter, and she wants to buy him and Lorelai a house they'll both like for a wedding present. Then, when Lorelai tells her the wedding isn't going to happen, she's genuinely sympathetic - the Emily of earlier seasons would likely have given Lorelai a lecture or barbed comment about not being able to keep a man. She shows the same sympathy when Lorelai tells her she's divorcing Christopher, the man she's spent years pushing her to be with. By the end of the show, she hasn't completely softened or stopped making mistakes, but she's started to become more aware of how her actions affect Lorelai, and to make a conscious effort to accept her daughter for who she is. Apologies for the essay! All this to say that the plane scene is a beautiful and important scene, and Kelly (and Lauren) played it perfectly.
I love this plane scene and think it's one of the best from the show So many seem to hate the story line at the beginning of season 6 but i absolutely love it because it was a chance for all characters to grow
Emily's character is the result of her own up bringing. She was raised to hold certain beliefs about a wife's duty and what a woman should want for herself, and tried her best to give all that to Lorelai- but Lorelai just didn't want it. It was neither of their's fault but equally if they had just listened or spoke to one another a bit more, so much trouble could have been avoided. Ultimately, I like Emily. She may seem stubborn and unreasonable at times, but the way glimpses of her true emotions towards Richard, Lorelai and Rory are revealed just makes me love her and sympathise with her more!
I think a lot of the family dynamics that led lorelai to leave home was also influenced by Richard, her father. Multiple times through the series I've seen his rigid patriarchal side and how he wanted his daughter/granddaughter to be a certain way in order for him to accept them. Emily also had to face that all through her life and it even caused a rift in their marital life later in the series. While Emily is no doubt a strong woman, she had to navigate her way in a society where the slightest vulnerability or imperfection was picked and highlighted. So it was hard for her to communicate with her very fiercely independent daughter. Lorelai made her choice by leaving home, not the most well-thought, mature choice, but she was 16 at that time and she was one of the rare few who know who they are and what they want early in their lives. I think this show does an incredible job of depicting life. How no one choice is right or wrong. Everyone acts according to their own nature and at every point in life they have some challenges and some privileges.
This!!!! Richard was also super instrumental into how Lorelai's pregnancy was handled. I think what I've always liked about this show is that it's no good guy vs bad guy. They're all so layered!
I'm seeing a lot of people here saying that Lorelei was too proud and ungrateful and should have tried better to mend her relationship with her mother. While I do agree that Lorelei is stubborn to a fault, y'all are forgetting that while Emily does care deeply for her family, she is still manipulative as hell. She refuses to respect Lorelei's boundaries and violates them several times, she goes behind her back over and over again, and actively tries to ruin Lorelei's relationship with Luke because Emily still wants to control Lorelei's love life. All while also trying to form Rory into the version of Lorelei that they wanted but never had and demeaning and degrading Lorelei's career and efforts as a mother. She rarely tries to understand or validate her daughter without using that to manipulate her. The minute Lorelei bends even the slightest bit, Emily tries to take over. Then when Lorelei gets upset and tries to reestablish her boundaries, Emily plays the victim. Given how that pattern happens over and over and over again, Lorelei has every right to not trust Emily, and I completely understand why she spends so long refusing to let her mother in. Does that mean Lorelei handled every situation perfectly? No, Lorelei also has a lot of growing to do. But y'all have to understand that no matter how good her intentions are, Emily can be an incredibly toxic, controlling, and manipulative person. While Lorelei could use several lessons in effective communication and relationship building, she doesn't deserve to be vilified for the stubbornness and frustration with which she approaches her relationship with Emily. She knows she has to have boundaries, otherwise Emily will walk all over her and go right back to hyper controlling her life.
Btw just to make it clear, I LOVE Emily. Her character arc is my favorite from this whole show. I just think people are shitting on Lorelei too much without acknowledging that Emily carries enormous responsibility for the family mess.
As someone who has watched this series too many times to count, I completely agree. The judgement, manipulation, scheming, etc. was horrible. As was the fact that Emily would criticize Lorelei for not accepting help then hold it over her head when she finally did. Even the snide comments like when Lorelei told Emily someone they knew had shot her husband and Emily responded by saying “at least she had a husband to kill”. Emily jumped at every opportunity to rear Lorelei down. I mean the things she’d say about Loreleis’s house! There was that scene where Lorelei attempted to help Emily deal with Richard’s mother who disapproved of her just like Emily disapproved of Lorelei. I especially liked when Lorelei pointed out that she was teaching Emily how to cope in the same way she copes. I thought that would be a turning point but nope Emily kept on being Emily.
My words exactly. You could see that Lorelai did try to give Emily another chance, even multiple times. But always, the moment things started going better, Emily ruined it again with her need to control everything. You can't buy your kid with money, which is something that many people here seem to think somehow ? They talk about how ungrateful Lorelai was, but gosh, she couldn't breathe in that household and I feel her. You can have everything fancy and still feel like you are in the prison. Emily might love Lorelai, but she didn't try to change. She refused to ever step back, she refused that maybe what happened between her and Lorelai could partially be her fault. And honestly, my absolute favourite scene in the show is after Luke and Lorelai get back together and Emily comes to the Diner... ‶Please hear me. If I want your input in my life in any way, shape or form, I will ask for it. Until then, do us all a favor and SHUT UP!″ The power of this moment is just huge. You can see how Lorelai finally tells Emily what she thinks, that anger in her eyes... wow. Lauren Graham deserves an Oscar for that.
a big problem with their relationship is communication, but its also the fact that Emily (and Richard for that matter) do things for Lorelei or rory convinced its for them but in reality its for them. she rattles off the things she did for Rory but she never really asked her if she wanted any of that. in some cases she literally forced it on Rory. that's the difference between being a helpful, guiding parent versus a micromanager whose kid never truly truly grows up or moves far away. asking if they want your help.
There’s no such thing as force , Rory could’ve easily refused if she didn’t want these things . She later on called out her grandma for doing too many things she didnt ask for but Emily told her she didn’t say no to her offers either. Rory secretly enjoyed being a Gilmore period.
I think that’s the key point to understand Emilys and Lorelais relationship: They somehow love and care about each other but they are simply too different to match each others lives.
Emily strikes me as the kind of person who struggles between how she was raised to behave and the relationships she wants to have, how she was raised almost always seems to get in the way of her wanting to express how she feels. I see so much of her just struggling to keep her emotions in check whilst also wanting to be supportive
The thing Emily never seemed to understand is if Mia sent her home it would have felt even more like a prison. They’d have an even worse relationship if Lorelei never got her independence
When i first watched gilmore girls I was around rory's age and hatedddd emily. the way she nitpicked, always had some snide comment to say about everything, reminded me so much of my mom at the time. but now she's hands down one of my favorite characters on the show. mostly because i realized i was a lot more like lorelai than i realized, and looking at her through more adult eyes realized she is not somebody to idolize. emily was broken by what happened between her and her daughter, but her pride and ego was her way to cope instead of break down and admit that she could have done things differently. now that im out of my teen angst phase i can see her as her whole character and not just the connections i saw between her and my own mother. it's much deeper than that.
Emily is truly my favorite of the show. I have said it many times to many friends. She really wanted to be there for Rory and try to get closer to Lorelei. I love Emily so much. If she were my grandmother, I would consider myself lucky to have a bold, strong woman to look up to.
What about when she came into car sat next to Richard after Rory's 16 birthday party and she said something like : " I don't know my own daughter" this scene always hits me hard
I always felt sorry for Emily. You can tell she never wanted this life, but played the part because she had to. I'm glad we got to see Emily happy at the end of the follow up series.
Watching Gilmore Girls as an adult is so different. As a teenager I was all team loralei in terms of her leaving her parents house but she had a home already for her and her daughter like wtf??
yah but she wouldve been forced to marry Christopher, she wouldnt have been able to live the life she wanted to live in that repressive household. The Emily and Richard we see on the show are slightly better than the Emily and Richard that Lorelai grew up with it makes sense why she'd want to escape that household, not saying the way she went about it was right either but I understand her choice
@@lissa4750 I mean it seems they were willing to go to extreme lengths to ensure that marriage happens (as seen in flashbacks) so though they couldnt literally force them they could make it very difficult for Lorelai until she finally gave in and married him thats seemingly why she left
I lived in a very controlling house hold like Lorelei did. The only difference was I wasn’t rich and I was abused physically too. But the thing is if you understand what she went through you can understand why she left. She made a life for herself and honestly she got a lot tougher and smarter doing so
God Emily Gilmore has got to be one of my favorite characters ever. Obviously she has her moments but she’s very clever, quick witted and much bigger hearted than she ever gets credit for.
I think the thing I loved the most about Lorelei and Emily’s relationship is as much as they wished they both were different In some ways, they both whether they liked it or not accepted that they were not their ideal family members and still remained family anyways, still tried to make it work and wanted that relationship even if just a little at times. You certainly don’t have to love your often toxic family members but it was interesting to see the story line of people who just had to deal and just got used to each other.
I got really tired of Lorelei being snarky/making comments then getting quiet and acting like she wasn’t saying anything wrong when her parents snap at her. She was unjustifiably rude to her parents, they clearly tried to mend their relationship with her by being involved in rorys life, but I feel like Lorelei was just too hung up on how she was living in a shed as a teen or whatever. She’s a strong woman but I do feel like she was very much in the wrong sometimes.
THIS!!! I like Lorelei but she literally would get UPSET when Emily and Richard tried doing things for Rory to make up for what happened with Lorelei. She also tried to meddle in things like “mom rory isn’t gonna wanna do that so stop it” yet rory would be fine with it or sometimes even WANT to do it. But because Lorelei didn’t wanna do it she ASSUMED rory wouldn’t either. It always upset me when she did stuff like that.
Honestly, Emily and Lorelai’s relationship is my favorite part of the show. Especially in the first four seasons, I love seeing both of them honestly try to mend their broken relationship and I love seeing how alike they are. I’ve always been thrown off by Emily trying to separate lorelai and Luke, and it felt kind of weird for her character to do that after all the growth she’s had. But in the reboot season she was my favorite character
Emily's mentality was 100% filial piety and familial duty with complete disregard to individuality and thought. Lorelei's mentality was 100% individuality and thought with complete disregard to filial piety and familial duty. Rory was bridged that gap for them, and they only bonded (in their own special way) once they started to appreciate the other's mindset.
it’s very interesting how different Mia was from the earlier episodes to the wedding, not just the actress but the characterization of her. she seemed more “proper” in the earlier season and then more “bohemian” like in the later one.
What a wonderful thing to compile. THANK YOU. You’ve highlighted both the magnificence of the writing and Kelly Bishop’s superlative performance. Hot take - Lorelei fails to mature and appreciate her mother as just another woman doing her best with the emotional tool box she has.
I never noticed before that Lorelai’s coat in the plane scene is the same as the famous pink one, just a different color/pattern. Crazy how much more iconic it is in pink
Lorelei was horrible to her parents! I remember watching this when it first came out in my early 20’s and feeling sorry for her and proud she made it on her own. But after seeing it again as a mid 30’s to early 40’s I see now that she was ungrateful and rude and spoiled and horrible to her parents. I’m sure living in that kind of society must be alot of pressure to be a certain way and maybe even perfect when in reality life isn’t perfect. But she was ungrateful of the opportunities and the position she was born into that a lot of people would be happy for.
It always bothered me that she made it seem like she had to run off with nothing to start her life with Rory. She was not abused, just monitored and controlled. Is that great? Not really, but she could have sucked it up for a few years for the sake of her baby. At least graduate high school and get some kind of job before packing up little Rory and moving out. And it was idiotic not to get child support from Christopher. Those were her bad choices, not her parents.
I think the reason Lorelai was emotionally stunted which transferred over to her romantic relationships is that she was emotionally neglected by her parents whilst growing up. It was apparent that her parents weren’t the affectionate types and it’s unlikely they regularly told their daughter they loved her. The Gilmores didn’t really know how to convey their feelings (their real ones) and mask it with constant disagreements/criticisms. And as far as Lorelai’s relationship with Rory goes, part of it is that she was growing up too and didn’t really have a good model for parenting. Her parents did the best they could with what they had, but Lorelai wasn’t build from the same mold. And she wasn’t what they expected. None of them are really wrong/right. The show did an amazing job of exploring the complexity of familiar relationships.
Growing up my relationship with my mother was just like Lorelai and Emily. My mom would be too controlling and sometimes emotionally abusive. I would feel suffocated in my own home. Many times I tried to run away. Now looking back I realized that just like Emily, my mother was very lonely. She had no one to talk to. My dad was always busy with work. Unknowingly she took her frustrations out on me and that created a rift in our relationship. Even now I still have a hard time talking to her because its hard to remove the scars of your childhood trauma but I now understand why she is the way she is with me and I forgive her.
i watched and rooted for lorelei as a child but now that i’m older i get so fed up with how she holds bitterness and pride over her relationship with her parents
Actually, it's Emily and Richard who hold the bitterness. I just rewatched the show, and Lorelai always gave them another chance, she did try to have good relationship with them multiple times. It was always Emily´s extremelly controlling behaviour that ruined it.
@@soukscriedhere I disagree completely. I'm rewatching it too and mostly I'm on richard and Emily's side. Lorelei is selfish a lot of the Time. Like when her father left Jason out of the company Bc otherwise her parents would've lost everything. She didn't act the least bit concerned with them losing everything at practically retirement age but she's fine with them having money when she needs some. Or when they separated and she was obsessed with getting them to admit it instead of respecting their privacy. She had no problem meddling with their relationship, yet got so upset when they meddled with hers. I don't agree with everything they did but she def did a lot wrong with them.
@@megmur1766 What show are you watching ?! Lorelai literally broke up with Jason because he was suing her father. How do you call that selfish? Lot of people call Lorelai selfish, but she's always there for her friends when they need, she always offers to help. She's bit self-centered, that's natural character flaw, but she does think about others' feelings and she cares
@@soukscriedhere she's more than a bit self centered. She started a fight with Rory Bc she enjoyed golfing with her grandfather and wanted to go to Friday night dinner....and Lorelai broke up with him AFTER her dad pointed out her callousness towards her parents situation. You could tell she felt guilty when he stormed off Bc regardless of what they've done they've always circled the wagons around her when someone tried to come against her or threaten her and Rorys happiness.
I get why she and lorelei always clashed. Lorelei just never take anything too seriously and like her mother said her humor is off putting. She doesnt know when and where to place her attitude Lorelei is good for a drink buddy, popular good humored but sometimes unreliable when it comes to more mature responsibility. Shes really not as clever as she thinks. Her self reliance is admirable but rory is a testament why we cant always be besties with our mothers because we need them to be mothers. Emily has these common narcissistic traits that makes her insufferable but you cant help but feel bad for her sometimes. Thats good writing right there
It’s so funny everyone is so quick to try and decide who was the better character and I just always feel in awe of the original shows depth of character for everyone in that world, it’s such a good show because it is so painfully human, where each character has their shining moments and their bad moments and bad choices and bizarre hang ups and I find myself constantly shifting my perspective and understanding with each episode of these very densely written characters and their story as they live it
And Lorelei slept in a shed? Okay I agree with Emily then, enough of the New England small town nicey niceness. Granted it feels like Emily wanted a child she can control
Yes, she slept in a shed because she needed a place for her child and she made one. She made her own life which benefited both Rory and her. I understand Emily being upset but she had no excuse to try and for Lorelei to get married
@@jessicavictoriacarrillo7254 probably Was a little more comfortable than what we imagine Maybe mia wanted to take her in, but lorelai wanted to stay indeptendant so they arranged the shed to a noce beautiful home A "shed" can also basically be a small tiny house with warm water access, floorboards and cozy rooms,
I never understood why nobody addressed the fact that Rory was very rude to her grandparents and even Lorelai with the whole “I’m dropping out of Yale” drama. Yes, when you’re teenager (she was late blooming) you have this outbursts where you don’t care about anybody else but yourself. But there has to be retaliation. That’s what parenting and growing up is all about. It looked like in the end the only thing that was important for Lorelai wasn’t the fact that Rory dropped out of Yale, but the fact that she went to her grandparents seeking for help what annoyed her the most. She says is tough love but as soon as she’s back she doesn’t tell her anything. She’s just happy Rory isn’t with her grandparents anymore. You don’t screw your love ones over and then go back only when you fixed your personal issues. They’re still entitled to give you shit for your poor attitude.
She really deserved better from Richard. Everyone gives Lorelai shit but Richard was her husband, and partner. He constantly degraded what was important to her and lied to her about his ex for years and let his mother treat Em like crap. They have a sweet relationship but their separation was 100% his fault
Lorelai is much more mature than people give her credit for. Because as someone who also has this type of stranded and damaged relationship with my mother i would have never been as nice and sweet as she still is to Emily, even if my mother cried in front of me like that after all she did. Seeing the way Lorelai acts with such grace gives me hope that maybe one day me and my mother could treat each other with basic respect once again, or that i could try to do so after the resentment partially heals
lorelai and rory were terrible, spoiled and ungrateful. emily isn't innocent but they really treated her like trash. emily can be too much but she was hard to hate. she was the only one who had growth on the show.
Even thought Emily would be considered a text book narcissist when I comes to Lorelei she’s still an interesting character. Honestly I see this mom- daughter dynamics pretty relatable each one becoming the better mother in the process even with all their issues
Meh. Emily didn’t “just” want her daughter and grand-daughter to be in her life. She kept trying to turn Rory and Lorelei into the people SHE expected them to be. I’m sure on some subconscious level, it was because that way she could better relate to them and feel more secure about her relationship to them…. which is human and pitiable. But ultimately she constantly criticizes every aspect of Lorelei’s personality and the majority of her life choices… and Lorelei isn’t obligated to be around someone who does that. You want your kid to be part of your life? Accept their individuality and stop trying to make them into the person YOU wanted them to be before they were even born… and when they don’t become that person, accept it instead of constantly criticizing them.
people hated her but she's just the product of her environment thats why she turned out this way (controlling) but her priority has always been the good of her daughter. imagine your only child ran away from you. any parent's heart would break.
One of the most shocking moments it was when Emily finds out about Lorelai´s wedding with Max and she tells to Richard to apologize with Rory about the Dean incident, the sadness on Emily's face is heartbreaking
Although she had to be high to realize it, Emily's "canoe vs kayak" analysis was her biggest breakthrough about the truth Lorelai's growth as an individual and her value as a person. (And of course when she "sobered up" the next morning she was back to her cold, nasty self.) I wish they had included it here.
Emily desired connection and value...then tried to redefine her worth through over priced stuff...actually she just needs to redefine her value independent of what she had done for her daughter and what she has bought. She needs to reconnect with them in meaningful ways that are different and new and see herself in a new light. Her relationship might change of what she expected it to be and she needs to accept those changes and find something to help her adjust. It’s a mental process that happens for various people across the lifespan in different stages.
Sometimes I wish we got an episode fully dedicated to Emily’s past. Like maybe when she married Richard or was pregnant with lorelai or maybe her meeting Richard.
Agreed, that would be nice ayi think it would bring out more Emily
Yes!!! Sometimes I do sympathize with Emily, especially now I'm rewatching the series yet again, it's nice to focus on her face and see the emotion she tries to hide.
And Emily spin-off!
Ooh, that would be such a good episode.
We need a spinoff of her. She is the best.
the lack of communication between all family members is what caused the whole family thing to not work out
so truuuu
I agree
You're right, but lack of communication is what keeps a lot of fictional storylines going.
FAX

Come to think, Emily didn't send Rory back to her home either when she felt like she was out of options and needed a place to feel comfortable in
True, but at least Loerlai knew where Rory was. And Rory was an adult at the time. Loerlai wasn't, but I see your point.
Emily is very hypocritical on that point. Emily lost the argument even when she said what did and Mia was so kind to let her go. Emily should of simply thanked her for looking after the girls. Mia understood that telling Lorelai what to do was not what she needed at that time.
Excellent point

Gilmore girls is really good at that no one is right all the time (there’s probably a better way to word that lol) Because Lorelai and Emily’s fractured relationship is on both sides, because Emily never asked Lorelai to leave, but Emily will hold a grudge when hurt... I’ve watched the show through many times and I really admire how well the characters are written, it’s just my opinion but I think they did a really good job of making multi-faceted characters and showing that people have both good qualities and bad ones
This is so true. This makes them real. And you can’t help but fall in love with pretty much all of them.

If you were a maid working for her, you’d see her as evil lol
so that excuse her behavior on how she treats her daughter and everyone.

On the plane scene, Lorelai found the correct words to say at the end and she is completely right. I love those lines. It's heartbreaking still, the distance that exists in the family. Emily's so sad and upset and she doesn't even get a hug 😢
yeah, it breaks my heart, how Lorelei just left Emily there crying on the plane, and didn't stay to support her a bit more :(
Because Emily TOLD HER to leave her alone and let her "be vain and shallow"! She was embarrassed to become so emotional in a (technically) public place! She's too proud for that kind of vulnerability! Lorelai staying and trying to comfort her would've just angered her.
It also shows how Emily does everything for Rory without letting her experience what failure is. We grow with struggle and become weak without it.
frr there r a couple moments when u can tell that loralai and emily do care about eachother like mother and daughter. and i live for them
Emily standing up for Jason and Lorelei is one of my favorite moments of the series.
@@rm6700 sometimes he showed his true colours aka the manipulative side

"I mean for God's sake, Mia was like a mother to you!"
- Oh boy, you could see that hit Emily where it hurts!
@Mercy not only that but all they did was control her, and she basically shamed Lorelei for “gaining” a few pounds
@Mercy what if she had postpartum depression? All mothers make mistakes
@Mercy I wish they would make a show dedicated solely on lorelai growing up I don’t support those actions of Emily but sometimes I do feel for her and I wish we could get some insight as to how lorelais childhood really was
@@river6568 yes but in the end she still loved her and learned from her mistakes
I love this plane scene and think it's one of the best from the show
So many seem to hate the story line at the beginning of season 6 but i absolutely love it because it was a chance for all characters to grow
What a beautiful analysis. I truly enjoyed reading this - thank you.
She may seem stubborn and unreasonable at times, but the way glimpses of her true emotions towards Richard, Lorelai and Rory are revealed just makes me love her and sympathise with her more!
they r both really stubborn, and more similar than they might believe
Girl you’re batshit. Nothing the father did was bad. Stop slurring men as patriarchal. You’re feminist cult is toxic. Seek helpz
Richard SUUUUUCKS
Its both Richard and Emily.
Until then, do us all a favor and SHUT UP!″

This show has so many well rounded characters, nobody is flawless or perfect but nobody is evil either, everyone is very whole and authentic feeling
a big problem with their relationship is communication, but its also the fact that Emily (and Richard for that matter) do things for Lorelei or rory convinced its for them but in reality its for them. she rattles off the things she did for Rory but she never really asked her if she wanted any of that. in some cases she literally forced it on Rory. that's the difference between being a helpful, guiding parent versus a micromanager whose kid never truly truly grows up or moves far away. asking if they want your help.
There’s no such thing as force , Rory could’ve easily refused if she didn’t want these things . She later on called out her grandma for doing too many things she didnt ask for but Emily told her she didn’t say no to her offers either. Rory secretly enjoyed being a Gilmore period.
She really does love her daughter despite struggling understanding her child.
I think that’s the key point to understand Emilys and Lorelais relationship: They somehow love and care about each other but they are simply too different to match each others lives.
My fav is when she roasts shira

That is my favorite Emily moment.
Omg i just realized from your comment Independence Inn wasn't just named that for no reason!
Plus if Mia send Lorelai back home Lorelai would probably run away again.
Also she didn’t exactly send Rory home to yale when she came to Richard crying
I agree. I feel Mia was the mother Mia needed to help her get her life in order. If she was sent home she would have been a prisoner in her own home
Or Lorelei could’ve run away to god knows where and that place couldn’t have been a safe space .

You certainly don’t have to love your often toxic family members but it was interesting to see the story line of people who just had to deal and just got used to each other.
It’s criminal how Kelly Bishop never earned an Emmy nomination or win for her role as Emily Gilmore. She was the best character on Gilmore Girls.

As I got to know Lorelei I really disliked her. What she did to her parents was unforgivable and her continued animosity was childish.
Finally other people see it!
All the crying is hilarious
@@faith8058 i bet if you where in Lorelai situation and your parents loved your kids more then you. You would be upset too
Honestly, Emily and Lorelai’s relationship is my favorite part of the show.
Crazy how much more iconic it is in pink
i love emily as a character, but as a person not so much. she’s so funny and complex though.
That first clip always makes me cry!!! I wish we had more of Emily and Mia discussions of young Lorelai
i watched and rooted for lorelei as a child but now that i’m older i get so fed up with how she holds bitterness and pride over her relationship with her parents
I don't think that's it. Sometimes it takes more than time and the entire family is very skilled with sweeping things under the rug.
You could tell she felt guilty when he stormed off Bc regardless of what they've done they've always circled the wagons around her when someone tried to come against her or threaten her and Rorys happiness.
when i clicked on this video i thought i'd be laughing not crying omg
the pain on her face when she went to confront the hotel owner always makes me think kindly of Emily.
Temperatures are about to drop in the next few days and actually feel like fall, so I’m about to start my Gilmore Girls rewatch. This has me excited
Aw the musical edits were perfect ❤
Emily is a “this is me trying” character
I get why she and lorelei always clashed. Lorelei just never take anything too seriously and like her mother said her humor is off putting. She doesnt know when and where to place her attitude
Lorelei is good for a drink buddy, popular good humored but sometimes unreliable when it comes to more mature responsibility. Shes really not as clever as she thinks. Her self reliance is admirable but rory is a testament why we cant always be besties with our mothers because we need them to be mothers.
Emily has these common narcissistic traits that makes her insufferable but you cant help but feel bad for her sometimes. Thats good writing right there
The music you added here is so soap opera in the best ways, reminds me of Twin Peaks
It’s so funny everyone is so quick to try and decide who was the better character and I just always feel in awe of the original shows depth of character for everyone in that world, it’s such a good show because it is so painfully human, where each character has their shining moments and their bad moments and bad choices and bizarre hang ups and I find myself constantly shifting my perspective and understanding with each episode of these very densely written characters and their story as they live it
EMILY GILMORE IS ICONIC
And Lorelei slept in a shed? Okay I agree with Emily then, enough of the New England small town nicey niceness.
Granted it feels like Emily wanted a child she can control
Yes, she slept in a shed because she needed a place for her child and she made one. She made her own life which benefited both Rory and her. I understand Emily being upset but she had no excuse to try and for Lorelei to get married
@@river6568 A shed in the Winter?
@@jessicavictoriacarrillo7254 probably Was a little more comfortable than what we imagine
Maybe mia wanted to take her in, but lorelai wanted to stay indeptendant so they arranged the shed to a noce beautiful home
A "shed" can also basically be a small tiny house with warm water access, floorboards and cozy rooms,
@@jessicavictoriacarrillo7254 it was insulated, she worked her way up, and that’s what she had
Not really a shed more like a shack or a small garage
It happens alot in families.
My all time fave series, watching it several times now, always make me laugh
I do wish we could’ve seen her get that box of pictures from Mia
She really deserved better from Richard. Everyone gives Lorelai shit but Richard was her husband, and partner. He constantly degraded what was important to her and lied to her about his ex for years and let his mother treat Em like crap. They have a sweet relationship but their separation was 100% his fault
Emily is my favorite character in Gilmore Girls!
And Emily acted like a victim when she didn't get her way.
Emily is such a character
The first scene always makes me cry, rewatching it, the picture/boxful lines rips me apart.
Even thought Emily would be considered a text book narcissist when I comes to Lorelei she’s still an interesting character. Honestly I see this mom- daughter dynamics pretty relatable each one becoming the better mother in the process even with all their issues
There has always been a power struggle between Emily and Lorelai. Both rarely showed any loving feelings towards one another.
I love that woman so much.
Emily is full of pain and love which makes her lash out
people hated her but she's just the product of her environment thats why she turned out this way (controlling) but her priority has always been the good of her daughter. imagine your only child ran away from you. any parent's heart would break.
I love Emily more than anyone else on the show.
I LOVE this character. She makes so much sense.
2:48 goals 🤌😂
I am undecided if Emily was a good mother or not. But I do think she loved her daughter and her granddaughter.
Wish u included the clip of her seeing Lorelai’s makeshift home at the inn and being heartbroken. Nvm its in pt 2
(And of course when she "sobered up" the next morning she was back to her cold, nasty self.) I wish they had included it here.
emily had the best character development no question
I never understood Lorelei. I would have killed to have Emily as a mom. Stuffy, snooty, overprotective? Yes. But my god, she cared for her daughter.
her style, her attitude, her personality, everything about EMILY is just ICONIC, shes probably my favourite gilmore girl after Lorelai.
love this
Emily desired connection and value...then tried to redefine her worth through over priced stuff...actually she just needs to redefine her value independent of what she had done for her daughter and what she has bought. She needs to reconnect with them in meaningful ways that are different and new and see herself in a new light. Her relationship might change of what she expected it to be and she needs to accept those changes and find something to help her adjust. It’s a mental process that happens for various people across the lifespan in different stages.
I actually admire her. She's an old soul, following classic old money society standards, with fierceness but grace at the same time.
“And you didn’t lose me!”
