For me, Logan was when I noticed what exactly Rory is doing. When she was single, (or with Lane so to speak) she was a lot like Lane, liked the same music, etc., when she was with Dean, her voice started to do the high and whiny thing (like Jared P does in every show he's in), when she met Jess, she started to act like Jess, (skipping school, doing her own thing) and when she met Logan, she started to act like Logan. From breaking the law to falling out with her mom, she was a little mirror girl. That's why the forgettable boyfriend from the reboot was so poignant. She was so lost, she couldn't even remember herself.

I always thought that! I think that Rory never really had a big personality. In that sense she was more like Christopher. Yes she liked studing and reading books but that doesn’t make you charismatic. I honestly think that Lorelai had such a big personality that Rory never fully developed hers. She was like a complement to Lorelais personality and when she stared her own journey in life without her mom she was lost and fell flat. She desperately tried to mirror the people around her and Logan wasn’t a good influence. I’m team Jess cause despite everything (not trying to defent Jess actions) I feel like he was the one who brought the best version of Rory.

Paris not getting into Harvard for undergrad always bothered me too. What made me even more mad was when Rory became valedictorian over Paris as well. We get that Rory is smart and that catching up to what her prep school peers were doing for years was no small feat. But for someone like Paris who has worked her whole life, put in a ton of work and receiving excellent grades still being pushed behind Rory in almost every regard was really unfair.

    • @ZBM-jj1xr
      @ZBM-jj1xr Год назад +44

Life is unfair though and tv shows need some kind of drama to stay interesting. Rory succeeding over Paris at that point was good for the story, because it further enhanced the golden child narrative for Rory and later succumb to it. It also gave way for Paris to start growing past having to be successful at all times.

    • @kbb684
      @kbb684 Год назад +34

to be fair, that is how ivy league admissions work sometimes... especially with chilton being so competitive, when you have excellent candidates coming from the same institution, the choice of who gets in is likely to feel random. at the absolute top of the pile, who gets in depends on 1.) whether the admissions board thinks they will get into a lot of other exclusive schools and might chose one of those instead 2.) are they "moldable", or havent peaked yet. schools love to see that you have further potential and room for growth. i think paris fell into that first category, because her stats and extracurriculars were off the charts but not so impossible that she seemed incapable of growth, she was likely wanted everywhere.

I need justice for Lane !!! She wasn’t supposed to settle down and marry such a goofball like Zach. All the trouble she went through to be in a band and just for that band to not have their breakthrough is sad. I feel like the producers failed her story.
Also I think that Rory has a big ego and that she can’t handle a little criticism. Because when Logan’s father told her that she wasn’t good enough to be a journalist she began being reckless and responded to that by stealing a boat and dropping out of Yale.
It shows again how everybody thought of her as this smart girl that gets through anything and that nothing is impossible for her - and that got clearly into her head.
I understand that Lorelai didn’t want to raise Rory like her mother did but I think their relationship was still a little toxic and made Rory allow the things she did.
For me her downfall started when Rory kissed Jess while being with Dean and how Lorelai told her to not tell him. She got away with this the first time and that’s how she ended up sleeping with people like Dean who was married or Logan who was engaged without feeling any guilt or remorse.
BUT what really ended me was when Rory and a married Dean were caught by Lorelai and Lorelai then confronts Rory about it by saying that he’s a married man and how wrong it was to sleep with him that girl really told her mother that it was her boyfriend first like girl… be fkn fr

HOMG! This has been my beef for a long time. To this day I think Lane should have actually made it out of Stars Hollow with her band. I think that Lane getting perhaps a modest record deal or some sort of significant success vs Rory failing in her internship with Logan’s dad would have been so interesting to watch. Lane finally being able to tell her friend that the world doesn’t revolve around her. I mean, I understand that the show is Gilmore Girls but I feel like Rory didn’t really think much of Lane? Or that she just knew Lane wasn’t going anywhere if that makes sense? Not in a vicious I’m better than you way but a low key I’m better than you way? 😅
The writers really messed Lane up. I was low key so upset that they just threw her character away. To get pregnant and be poor? Especially considering how much Lane’s mom didn’t want that for her?! Smh. Dang. I wanted so much for Lane and her band to make it. I wanted so much more for Lane.

I personally love that Paris didn't get into Harvard because it gave the writers an opportunity to include Paris in the rest of the show. Giving her the twist of using a life coach (even though he went to prison, which was hilariously ironic for him to be giving her advice from a cell) helped tone her character down, keeping all of the drive but smoothing down her rough edges and abrasiveness. Paris is one of my favorite characters because in a world filled with Rory fans and people throwing opportunity and praise to her, Paris is consistently the only person who can tell Rory the truth about her behavior/decisions and actually get Rory to listen. The relationship is very one-sided at times but I would love to know a Paris in real life for that blunt but loving straightforwardness. Paris is the dose of reality that Rory would prefer to float away from. If you look at the scene where Paris is trying to decide where to go to grad school and doesn't want to include Doyle, Rory seems completely detached from the reality of what long distance would be like until Paris tells her to "carry that thought out". Similarly, when Rory is convinced that Logan being in London will be fine and they're so in love, Paris reminds her that the last time she thought they were on the same page, Logan slept with an entire wedding party. Paris is the voice of the viewers in the later seasons, and I think that's why she became so important by the finale.

    • @chamab.6800

Real talk right here. I remember watching the show when it first aired. I couldn’t stand Paris. She was so rough and couldn’t admit when she needed help (when she ran the newspaper and was holed up in a box fort). Rory had to come through, with help from Logan to get everyone organized and get that paper out on time.
Having rewatched over the years… well Paris was still abrasive but I understood her better. Paris was actually kind just very competitive. Paris was also very independent because her parents were never there but she still had that pressure of living up to the family name. As I’ve gotten older I came to the realization that Paris was a dynamic character and excellent friend to Rory.
Also, I had wish Paris and Lane had become friends. I saw so many possibilities with that storyline.

Having watched Gilmore Girls in its Entirety I never really noticed anything wrong with Rory, but I was twelve at the time and my ambition was to be like her I wanted to go to Harvard and be a writer. I think the problem most people had with Rory is that she was borderline a Mary Sue (Good Grades, Good School, etc) she didn't really have to work for anything. Lorelei worked hard to make sure Rory had everything even going so far as to beg money from Richard and Emily so that Rory could attend Chilton. Yes Rory struggled at first in her new school, but she was quickly able to rectify her grades coming out not only on top, but Valedictorian. However College isn't high school (something I learned the hard way) and this is Yale, which is one of the hardest schools in the country to get into aside from Harvard so of course the work will be fifty times harder. Also I'm sorry, but Logan's Dad was right Rory is too sensitive to make it as a journalist/writer you have to be able to take criticism with grace something Rory was never good at even from the start of the show. That being said Rory was used to everything being so easy for her that at the first sign of trouble she bolts goes running to Grandma and Grandpa for help. Actually thinking about it Rory was acting pretty entitled throughout the series and threw a hissy fit whenever something didn't go her way.
Don't get me wrong I still love Rory, but she needs to stop acting like a princess.

      Controversial opinion: Lorelei ruined Rory.
Rory was the town princess. She was planning to go to Harvard as a toddler if u ask Lorelei. Wtf? Even if she wanted to go there she was at heart a socialite. She always knew she had wealth to fall back on. She was a big fish in a dmall pond and then in the big pond she froze and fell back on the wealth around her. I can't say I blame her, I would love to have money raining on me like she does.
The thing is she never admits her privilege. She's healthy, beautiful, has great metabolism, perfect skin, mentally sound, happy, surrounded by love, books, what her heart desires... at least 3 gorgrous guys in love with her. And she keeps whining she's broke.
And that's the Lorelei effect. Lorelei shunned money so Rory has an internal conflict. She can't just accept her happiness with gratitude.

If she has gone to Harvard she would still be trying to please her family instead of becoming a powerful woman.

Nah Logan didn't manipulate her. He advised against that internship with his dad, he defended her against his family; and he always let her choose. He supported her during her dropout phase and when she tried to blame it on him and pointed out his privilege, he called her out because it was her choice and she herself is clouded in the same privilege that she supposedly hates. Logan never actively told her to leave her aspirations to the side, he did encourage her to be more spontaneous and have more fun. Rory was a young adult who didn't party or socialize at all or even network.
She chose wrong and that is not to blame it on the boyfriend. But I mean...she was young and thats normal in your 20s - making mistakes.
P.S. The voice thing is very noticeable after a few watches. Reddit is full of posts of "Rory baby voice" 😀 S1 Rory speaks with a deep voice, is quite sarcastic with a dry humor, and her mannerisms are between shy and smart-mouthed. S2 Rory and onwards speaks* with a baby slur...I think that Alexis Bledel overtook this affectation in her speech during her 20s. In Sin City she talks like this too. Her mannerisms go between shy and being "precious", unless she has a meltdown or a confrontation she is usually just being sweet and big-eyed. I wish we had stayed with S1 Rory.

Exactly my thoughts when anyone blames Logan for her bad behavior. He even advised she stayed in school. She made those decisions because she had always been told she was perfect and when Logan’s dad told her she didn’t have it, it went completely against what she had been told all her life. Logan was just there and because he’s a fuck up, they blame it on him. But truth be told, she started becoming a brat when she skipped school to see Jess in NY and she got no punishment. She felt guilty but all she had to do was say sorry and Loreli just let it go. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Agree. I always say while Logan gave his input on her decisions, he was never one to push her towards a certain path. Why? Because they're adults in an adult relationship. It's not his job to "handhold" Rory into doing the right thing. This was exactly her issue and those who blame Logan are only part of it.

@That Nerdy girl Tarini "let her"? I beg you pardon, is your boyfriend your owner, or are you a child and is he your parent? They were both young adults fully capable of taking their own decisions. I would not want my partner to encourage me to commit a crime, but if I do it and he participates, it is still MY CHOICE and I have to be responsible for the consequences of my own actions. But then again, Rory was a library mouse who was dating a rich frat boy who loved playing pranks; it goes without saying that his inclination would be to go for it instead of serving her wisdom!
In my comment there is not a single word about how he is the best boyfriend. I simply stated that he did not manipulate Rory, she made her own mistakes. He did stand up for her and support her sometimes, but let her have her free will.

My least favourite part about all of this is hearing people in the fandom blame Lorelai for how Rory turned out. Like, WHAT!?? Lorelai did EVERYTHING in her power to give Rory a good upbringing, but it's just never enough. Did she make mistakes in what she taught Rory? Of course, but blaming her for how Rory turned out is just giving Rory an out, which she always seems to get.

I think the principal problem with Lorelai parenting is th efact that she overprotect Rory, she never let her pays the consequences of his actions as the cheating with Dean, her reaction with the relationship of Rory and Jess, when Rory didn´t stay for her graduation, etc.

    • @not-a-ghost2206
      @not-a-ghost2206 2 года назад +49

The big trauma of lorelai are her parents. And with that she wants to do everything different from them. But what she doesn't realise is that through this she still is dependent on them. She dated Jason stiles purely to spite Emily (at the beginning of their relationship), she surrounded herself with people she couldn't stand (Taylor, babette) just because Emily wouldn't like them. This clouds her true wishes and feelings which we see when she finally cuts contact with her and chooses Luke. But her childhood let from "I never want my daughter to feel the way I do" to the other extreme, the best friend. She never regulated rorys emotions, she thought its parenting when you accept every tantrum fully. She attempted gentle parenting but it wasn't enough. That said, everybody makes mistakes and no parent is perfect. A traumatised parent will traumatise you if they didn't work through their triggers.

While I didn’t love Rory’s character development throughout the series and the revival, I am glad that the writers went that way with Rory’s character and didn’t give her a cookie cutter fairy tail life. More often, kids that are constantly praised, put on a Pedestal, and are never corrected or told they are wrong, end up just like Rory- have a complete breakdown when they fail at something, have someone tell them that they aren’t that special (like Mitchum did go Rory, etc. I’ve personally witnessed this a few times with kids I went to high school with.
The valedictorian of the class above me was charged for raping and impregnating his 13 year old stepsister a few years ago and is now in prison. Our local doctor’s daughter who was the “it” girl everyone fawned over is now a waitress at our local diner and has 3 kids by 3 different guys. If you would have asked anyone in our small town what these people would have been doing 10 years ago, everyone would have said they would cure cancer or something special. It’s been noted that a lot of time, “gifted” kids have breakdowns when something doesn’t go their way or they “fail”. A lot of them end up committing suicide.
As far as Logan, it makes sense to me that Rory dated him. It’s said that men marry a woman like their mother, and I think it’s true for girls and their dad. I feel like it’s especially true for girls with “daddy issues” like Rory. She probably saw traits of Christopher in Logan which only intensified the connection for her since she never had a connection with her father.

After watching this I have to say I really understand why Rory slept with dean now. Rory has always watched Lorelei move back and forth between her boyfriends and Christopher. Lorelei always slept with Chris every time she saw him because he was her "first love". Lorelei always runs back to Chris at the first sign of trouble because he comforts her and is in love with her. Rory has always looked up to Lorelei so I can see how she thought she could get away with the same thing and everything would be okay. Dean was obviously still in love with Rory and he didn't give a crap about his wife. Rory was feeling bad about herself because she wasn't doing well in school so she used dean to make herself feel better. Lorelei 2.0. This whole situation is really lorelei's fault and her shitty love life. I can basically guarantee that if Lorelei hadn't set this example for Rory, then she wouldn't have done something like this.

I think the problem here, lies with the fact that Lorelai overshares with Rory and has zero boundaries set in their relationship. As a mother, she has to keep her love life at least somewhat private which she doesn't and gives Rory full authority to comment on it.
Plus she makes bizarre choices and faces zero consequences.

Lauren Graham, to compare, is obviously so skilled with the dialogue and the comedic timing and using her voice because she was already acting and doing commercials. So as time went on and Alexis got more experience, her voice and breath work as well as timing caught up to the level of the other actors and she probably was also feeling more confident.

Ok so hear me out... I agree... but. 😅
I think Rory, from the beginning, has what I call "Main Character Energy". Everything just revolves around her; she's always front and center. She gets chosen to be Juliet, she is the group leader in the Business Fair even though Paris does all the work - and I'm not even saying she's asking for those positions and striving to reap what other people sew... but it just kinda happens because she is always front-and-center and on people's minds. How many little 4yo ballerinas must Patty have taught over all those decades - yet, 15 years later, she remembers exactly how Rory performed in her class...
And I think her main problem is exactly what you said in the end - she cannot just feel well in any environment where she can't be the center of anything. She could never thrive in a job where there's 10, 20 people beside her doing the exact same thing, she needs to find her niche where there's only her and no one parallel to her. Yet, all during her school/college years, this "Main character thing" kinda just always came to her - she never had to work for it. i.e. when she was elected editor of the Yale paper without even applying for it. It always just kinda happened. Not that she wasn't working hard, but she never worked hard for a certain goal for a prolonged period of time, she always did this one project that went very well and it happened "at the right time and place" for the right people to notice.
When, in her adult life, that "right time and place" thing doesn't quite happen - she hasn't learned how to work for it. She hasn't learned how to apply herself to a number of decision-making people in order to achieve one of the positions. She hasn't learned to apply for a number of jobs before you get a "yes" from one of them and she hasn't learned how to find her niche and make it happen. To thrive, she needs a niche that just pops up in front of her and she can just take the opportunity.

personally i think the reason why i hated rory after she dropped out of yale is because even after she dropped out of yale she was so lucky nd privileged enough to be able to stay in her grandparents' and not have consequences in her actions. !! we never saw her struggle as a character even when she had to do community service & dar.
i see alot of people also make the excuse that rory gilmore had the right to drop out of yale and that it was "realistic" but i think that she didn't drop out of yale because she lost interest in journalism she dropped out because of mitchum's comment on her.
nd alsoo the reason why i love paris geller so much is because of how she never truly gave up to get what she wants. i've only seen paris geller down and thats when she got rejected to harvard but in around the later seasons paris geller's family goes broke (from what i remember) but she still kept going with yale and working for her college tuition. it shows how much dedication she has for her academics and she'd keep her heads up now matter what. rory gilmore on the other hand ..
i also think that in the revival when rory lost interest in journalism was so confusing. i mean i get it but, became a book writer instead which is so random like yeah we know she loves books but it's never brought up that she had interest in writing a book!!

The reason you hate Paris not getting into Harvard is the same reason I and many others don’t like Rory by the end of the series. The way she went from being a certain type of flawed, to being a whole other type of flawed - where she basically became an entire other character - felt extremely out of place. Rory isn’t someone who lets setbacks or pressure get to her. At sixteen, she was willing to leave her best friend and first boyfriend behind to chase her dreams. People can change and make mistakes over time and, sure, the expectations of her mother and grandparents, not to mention the Gilmore legacy, might re-shape anyone. But the outcome of that pressure doesn’t align with who Rory became.
A lot of people rationalize and validate how she turned out, but imo everyone who hates her is just having a natural reaction to bad storytelling because, instead of becoming her own person with her own mistakes, Rory was forced to repeat her mother’s mistakes, but with none of the lessons or growth that Lorelei experienced. Amy Sherman-Palladino has always been open about wanting this ending from the very first season. But forcing her into this narrative for the sake of maintaining an old vision she had for the character did Rory, the show itself and the fans a huge disservice.

I disagree, Rory had no real potential because the show didnt allow for said potential to be possible. She and her life and the world the show had created were TOO perfect. Despite her mom having her at a young age, any abject poverty one would expect a single mother with no formal education to have was little more than a punch line in the form of why Rory and Lorelai eat a ton of fast food and junk food. While she and her mom occasionally "struggled" it was temporary because SUPRISE Lorelai's parents were actually super wealthy. Rory was of course a prodigy and did all of the things a "perfect" student would do. She was a nerd but again it was only surface level deep because her nerdiness never stopped her from having a slew of attractive boyfriends in high school and college. She lived in the "perfect town" with people who always sounded more like characters in a Hallmark movie than real people.
So her "downfall" had to happen otherwise the character would have never been even as semi interesting as she was.

I also noticed the voice thing when I rewatched the show in English for the first time recently. And that the way she carries herself is so different later on. There is a huge contrast between the scene where Jess is doing the coin trick and her (almost none-) reaction and her nervous fumbling in the scene where Logan is asking her to marry him.

  • @lemonily9645

I don't see how Chris and Logan are similar beyond both being blonde and rich white men, tbh. I understand the revival really sets it up for them to be the same, but if you look at the seasons Logan is in in a vacuum, no revival, they really are not. Logan changes, he proves he wants commitment with Rory, he's the only one of Rory's boyfriends who meets her where she is, not where he wants her to be. A prime example of this is stealing a boat and letting her drop out of Yale. Those are things she wanted to do at the time. He supported her. Someone like Jess thinks she's is better, and pushed her to be better. We the viewer also think she is better, so think "oh she should be with Jess." But imagine that's your life. Wouldn't it be better to be with the person who is just happy to support you, where you are at the time, not belittle your life choices? In Yale, out of Yale, Logan would be there.
Chris, on the other hand, was literally never present in Rory or Lorealis life, unless it was under his terms. So I don't see how they are the same or their relationships really comparable.
I understand people don't like Logan and I really liked your video and agreed with your points otherwise. But I do think they were the healthiest relationship Rory had in the show.

i think the evolution of Rory's character was actually pretty accurate. I see a lot of myself in her - and not in a positive way!!! she's awful and entitled. I was an extremely sick kid and completely mollycoddled. I never had to deal with big girl problems because the whole world rushed to rescue me, and now, even at 41, I struggle to fend for myself with even the tiniest element of adversity. I get so frustrated with myself - it's not an excuse, though, and when I was in my teens and 20s I think I probably came across as entitled because of it. As an adult, I just call myself a wuss and excuse myself for being non-confrontational!! In education, too, school came so easily to me, and college, too. Then I got to uni and an actual career and suddenly had to work for it, and it was an extremely uncomfortable shock to my system!! I don't like Rory and how she turned out, and I think it's because I identify those worst personality traits in myself.
I loved the show on its original run. I wanted to live in the wackiness of Stars Hollow and I liked the realism of characters with flaws. I think it was only series 7 that it lost its charm a bit for me, and the conflicts became too much and unrealistic for the characters we'd come to know

Im 13 and I see a lot of myself in Rory too and it scares me honestly. I love her and I aspire to be as successful as her in school but I don’t want to be her. To be very honest Im at risk of becoming her adult self but I’m just happy I saw this show when I still have time to turn myself around. I am so similar to her I get the exact same praise that she got as a highschooler the only difference in us is that I wasnt so lucky to be as privileged nor do I have as much “work ethic” she had im trying to get it back but its so hard to:/

Same, but I came from extremely bad conditions. Everything just kinda worked out throughout my school years and I never had to work hard. I found a reaallly good husband very young and that’s what got me through some bad things. And in that way I was super entitled and didn’t even realize how much that helped me… Now I’m in my 20s and experiencing real failures for the first time. It is absolutely horrible.

I love your break down on this! I love early Rory because I am a bookworm and rarely get to see bookworm characters. I agree with your timeline about when the character went downhill. I would like to add that Rory wasn't only given a lot of praise for her academics but also her looks. And you can see her start out as humble but increasingly she acted pretty full of herself as evidenced by many scenes with her chacking herself out in mirror and some fat shaming comments (i.e. that poor ballerina).

Honestly I feel like Rory was so "gifted" at the beginning of the first few seasons with how well she did in school and socially (for the most part) that the moment she went to Yale instead of Harvard, I think she was so gifted she ended up burning out and kind of simply becoming human in a way? She spent all those years studying and aiming for Harvard her entire life it was kind of expected for a downfall to happen, she stopped being "perfect" all the time and setting unrealistic expectations for herself. She starts making many more mistakes and going after jobs that seem a bit unrealistic and turning down jobs that she should've accepted. I think she simply became more human towards the end of the show, especially in GG:AYITL

I used to watch this show since i found it on tv around season 2. so.... since 2001? long long time ago!
I think the show changed a lot in season 4. the way it was filmed, the flow of the episodes. and what the characters go through. it slowly changed and by season 5 the whole structure of the show was different.
Rory changed so much when she got with Dean when he was married. Ever since then, she just kept becoming more of a brat and self centered.
i waited 10 years for season 8. and then it arrived. So till this day, i pretend season 8 doesn't exist.

Paris not getting into Harvard kind of does happen a lot. Literally every applicant to Harvard is like Paris and the acceptance rate is so tiny that it’s entirely plausible. Rory not becoming successful in life is also entirely plausible because the real world does not have the same incentive structure that college does. Not even grad school functions the same way. It’s pretty rough out there and people don’t really care if you went to an Ivy League school.

Totally agree. But I also believe that one of the (sometimes) unspoken pressures Rory faced, was the reality that she was essentially thrust into this position of being her grandparents’ do-over. Persuading her to attend posh balls and parties, pushing her to attend Richard’s legacy school, notably paying more attention to her interests than they did with Lorelai (mostly thinking of their bedrooms at the Gilmore mansion. Lorelai’s was full of dolls and frills that she openly said she didn’t like, whereas Emily actually ASKS Rory what she likes before decorating her room.) And not wanting to disappoint them, especially knowing they put her through school. Not as if this excuses any of her actions, but it’s a worthwhile thought!

I feel like the show is realistic and shows how people disappoint others or let you down based on your expectations for them . People change, make bad choices, and need those experiences to grow up. It’s a realistic show. I’m sure we are all like Rory in our own way. People hating her just shows how unrealistic our expectations are for others . I appreciate your opinion and the video. I never realized people dislike her so much but as she got older she did make some bad choices that affected others.

1-it’s Home wrecking Rory & Dirty Dog Dean in my house lol. 2-Paris not getting into Harvard was shocking, while losing her virginity and breaking down in front of everyone ?! But it was a perfect plot twist and the fact that they ended up being roommates together and on the paper together again, softened the blow for me. We needed Paris to stay with Rory. She’s one of the best characters and actresses ever. 3-In the Jail Bird party scene, I’ve always thought the look on Logan’s face when Rory said she would outdo him with not going to school, was DISAPPOINTMENT. He did not look happy, he looked concerned. He was always attracted to how serious she took her academics.

I disagree when it comes to Logan and Rory's relationships. I don't think Logan wanted Rory to be like his mother. Logan tried everything in his power to escape his family. He did not get along with his father and he pitied his mother. He only really had a good relationship with his sister. Logan liked Rory because she wasn't an upper-class girl, she wasn't snobby, and she was smart and intellectual like him. She was different than the other girls he was used to so I never saw how he wanted her to be like his mother.
Also, Logan was always upfront with Rory about who he was and what he wanted. In the beginning, he made it clear to her that he didn't want a serious relationship and that he wanted things with her to be casual. He asked her if she was alright with that and she said yes. Rory basically forced Logan to be in a relationship with her after getting jealous and realizing that she couldn't do the casual thing. We also have to admit one of the reasons Rory was attracted to Logan was because of his class, status, and money. Towards the end of the series, Rory was more than happy and at times took full advantage of being a legacy child with rich and affluent grandparents. She herself at times acted like a snob.
When it comes to Rory dropping out of Yale that was all on her. He should not be blamed for her making that decision. Logan warned worried plenty of times about his father. He also told her it was not a good idea for her to work with his father and that his father was not a nice guy. Rory had a front-row seat on how horrible a person Mitchum was. He treated Logan horribly and that's why his relationship with Logan was so bad. If he treated his own son like that what made her think she would be different. Logan tried to convince Rory to go back to school but every time he tried to speak to her about school she would get mad or avoid the conversation. What else was he supposed to do, he couldn't force her to go back to school. I'm not saying Logan was the perfect boyfriend but he was that bad and definitely should not be blamed for Rory's decisions and actions, especially regarding her decision to drop out of Yale.

Logan was an enabler, not a manipulator. Rory made her own choices, but Logan certainly didn’t help matters. He enabled all of Rory’s bad choices: the boat stealing, the leaving Yale, hoping the DAR. He was a child of privilege, he didn’t have to worry over consequences. The only time I liked Logan is when he rightfully called Rory out on her own privilege. If anyone was like Christopher: it was Rory. She was definitely her father’s daughter.

I think the pressure of turning out prefect to prove her mom successfully raised her as a teen mom also got to her....I think that's why she wanted to be perfect and achieve so much so early before she even knew what she really wanted in life. Her identity was formed from prove my mom was the best teen mom ever complex she was settled with! I think her mom ingrained it in her without realizing it in the show snd that was her down fall . She wasn't doing it for herself so she wanted rooted in her path.

she also used this as her 'struggle card' to prove that she struggled to get where she is and isn't handed opportunities (like with her argument with logan at the pub) when in reality it was Lorelai that struggled and put her in a better position to go to Chilton then later Yale. Rory did not struggle from being underprivileged. but she loved using the card cause she was born to a teen mom.
because of this she refused to accept her privilege while still benefitting from it and became her own worst enemy.

Rory is handed everything and fawned over and poor Lane just bounces from one disappointment to another. Even Lane’s first experience with sex on her honeymoon was a bust! I found myself getting angry at the writers for this. I am not sure what message they were trying to send? But all in all, Lane is much more likable than Rory. And uh….yeah the scenes where the entire town is “All hail Rory.” 🤮 There is a difference between loving support and glorification based on test grades and how many obscure or overwrought books you have on your shelf. Like what did this girl ever actually do for anyone in the town or in her family?

The Romeo and Juliet episode where Rory confides in Lorelai and asks for help on how to tell Dean that she kissed Tristan at the party is where I believe that her downfall was because Lorelai literally told her not to tell Dean the truth and towards the end of the episode, she never told him which is the start of her being the toxic root of her relationships.

    @inthought02 2 года назад +11

Ok so minor disclaimer but I only skipped around to the last couple of minutes to see what your consensus on Rory was because I was worried the video would just be her being hated on relentlessly 😂. But actually, I say this mainly because given Rory's recent development that's how everyone seems to approach her character in video essays on RUclips, hence my hesitation. But I have to say, you were pretty solid in the last couple of minutes and I'm gonna try to sum up the courage to watch the whole thing. I may not agree with it all, but I really appreciate you noting that there still could be a chance for Rory to develop beyond this.
Onto my opinion of Rory: I feel like Rory is somewhat of an outcast in her own show not just because of where we last leave her in comparison to the other Gilmore women, but also in even how she behaves. Yes, she can be entitled and annoying and holds privilege that Emily and Lorelai also have, but in comparison to the other two women, she doesn't exactly have the same sort of drive that they do. Rory is in a way to her own detriment, more of a character that throughout the show tries to sway to other people's wants for her rather than being completely driven by what she personally wants for herself (though she does still have a drive to be studious and successful, in the original show). I think this is something that is a significant issue within her family's relationships but even the relationships with her boyfriends. Yes, she is still a well-loved kid and has immense luck to have been raised with a loving mother when she was a child to a teen mom, but given Lorelai's even subconscious behavior towards her and her grandparents' controlling attitude, I think Rory suffers from that sort of pressure that you mentioned at the end. Specifically, I feel like Lorelai isn't a horrible mom, she actually does great for how she had Rory, but I feel like her own personal issues with her parents have greatly influenced her own relationship with her daughter. Even the way that she had Rory later makes her become so paranoid over her daughter possibly having sex while in high-school, and despite being the self-titled 'cool mom', there's many moments where her reaction to when Rory does something wrong is far from the best. One thing that for example stuck out for me is how even in season 1, she repeatedly states that Rory has wanted to go to Harvard since she was a little kid. Why would Rory, a small child by then, be so passionate about a university that coincidentally, is a direct competitive faculty to Yale, an Ivy League that Richard is proud to have been a student in? The same university they likely wanted Lorelai to attend? Unless Lorelai herself wants Rory to attend Harvard as a way to "stick it" to her parents. And this is an ongoing thing that even in season 3, Lorelai becomes upset that Rory even considered applying to other colleges, despite the fact that it's the smartest thing to do when you apply for colleges at all. Even in season 6 when Rory tells her she'll drop out, Lorelai tells Luke that Rory was supposed to be "the poster child", she was supposed to be the long-lost hope for the Gilmores. She was in a way, going to restore Lorelai's "honor" because she's always felt that she lost it when she got pregnant at 16. And when you look at her and Rory's early history and stories, despite Lorelai having grown up rich, she and Rory grew up in a tool shed until they bought the house. Now I know that the logicstics and economy on the show is wobbly as hell, but from my perspective, I feel like Lorelai represents the outgoing, planned-it-all mom whereas Rory represents the more quiet helpful daughter that in a way HAD to have filled out that role because they didn't have much of a space to do anything else. Lorelai was practically growing up alongside Rory. Hence why I feel like even with Lorelai's apparent 'cool mom' badge, she was still pretty pressuring towards Rory because she needed her daughter to prove her own worth, in a way (though I don't believe that Lorelai was intentional in this and I do not mean to blame her for Rory's faults. Richard and Emily aren't exactly better in this field, either. Yes, it's pretty privileged to get to go to your grandparents when your mom doesn't let you come back home if you intend to drop out, but as the arrangement goes on, it's clear that Emily subconsciously tries to morph Rory to being Lorelai in her mind. Trying to control whether or not she and Logan sleep together, keeping her on a tighter leash by putting her in the DAR and asking about her schedule. Hell, even the relationship Rory has with Logan is like, the picture perfect fairy tale to Emily and Richard, because she would end up marrying into another rich family. I feel like in these moments it's pretty obvious that both Lorelai and Emily could also benefit from some proper therapy of their own, cause they def need it.
I also feel like another side to Rory that later affects her in her relationships with men is her very lacking relationship with her own father (and to a minor point, her own mother's relationship with men). If you take into account all the ends of her relationships in the original series, she never breaks up with a guy. Even when Jess is behaving terribly by the end of season 3, it's only once he leaves and doesn't call her that they are obviously broken up, but that break up is forced in because of his absence, it's not instigated by Rory before he leaves. And Logan breaks up with her when it's clear that she doesn't want to marry him right out of college. With the exception of the affair in AYITL which...I truly don't know if I can consider it a proper relationship, Rory often tries hard to make the relationship she's in work despite it so clearly not going well. She has a crush on Jess while she's with Dean? Forget it, she'll be willingly in denial about her feelings until Dean tells her it's obvious and he breaks up with her. She tries to make a relationship with him work again after his marriage falls apart despite them again being obviously not meant for each other. Logan's situation with the bridesmaids upsets her severely but again, she doesn't break up with him because of this. Rory is a flawed character, I dont deny that, but a lot of times she tries to make the relationship she's in go on despite there being no future in it. And I feel like this is definitely tied to her never really having a present father in her life. I feel like it's also why she can have a hard time with "being left" by guys that she's in an obvious relationship with.
I know you prob mentioned her scene with Mitchum but I'll add in my somewhat unpopular opinion on that as well: I personally don't think he was really right. I don't think Rory is necessarily good for something like an overseas correspondent, BUT, Mitchum's often hailed "constructive criticism" wasn't really constructive, either. It just wasnt helpful or considerate, it was him mainly being an asshole, to me. I say this because he doesn't even base his comment on anything concrete apart from Rory just not being a constant go-getter. He didn't really observe her writing or even her method of work beyond taking one look at her in a meeting where she was the new intern. So to him she can only do well as a secretary or something, despite the fact that many writing jobs aren't always the same as journalism? I think that what he said is more of a final blow to Rory's ongoing issues that started once she got into Yale and even in season 4, realized she may not be the perfect student that follows in her grandfather's footsteps and does the same amount of courses he did in his first year. I don't mean to absolve Rory of her own issues by saying this, but I feel like this is what makes her very real to me, at times. Yes, it's ridiculous to fall apart over a comment that can so easily be chalked up to an older man just being an asshole to you because he can be, but sometimes people can even take that and run a thousand reasons as to why they may be right. If you're a perfectionist, that can easily be your downfall if you don't learn how to manage it, and this is why I somewhat understand Rory's sudden decisions here.
I'm not Amy Sherman-Palladino, but I guess the thing that I wish for Rory to understand is that if a plan isn't working out long-term, be it a career one or a relationship, it's OK to switch gears. It's fine to improvise and not hold onto a strict lane. Often in life, that's how stuff work. And I guess for her to just have a solid "win" in her life, like for her to get to a point where she's stable and doesn't feel under constant pressure from herself or even her family members and to not feel like she has to prove her worth in existing (though I think that given with AYITL, the latter will likely be different moving forward). And for her to hopefully settle into a more long-term job, cause i feel like she's more built for that.
Edit: if you mentioned any of these other points in the video I apologize for possibly parroting them back to you.

Rory was constantly getting herself into situations where she hurt others then acting confused or naive about it. The first time it was cute after that it got old and it happened ALOT. I'm one of those rare people who liked Logan but is also team Luke. I was actually so done with Rory by the time Logan came around I felt like he was too good for her. Never got Lorelei being so hard on him they seem very similar to me in the way they reject the values of their privileged snobby parents. I think of Dean as her dad and Jess as her Luke. Logan is like her grandfather and that's why she flirted with acting like Emily when they got together.

She’s an anti-hero. Attracting the hate is the ambition of the writing. Showing the wrongdoing is human. Avoiding accountability is human. Great expectations falling short is good story. As for Logan / Christopher, one tried to live up to responsibilities while the other didn’t. Confident yet falling apart with setback makes sense; grit comes from failure & stuggle. All this makes it such that another year in the life would be interesting. No therapy required.

For me the problem was that Rory was being presented as this erfect child, perfect girl. Even when she cheated on Dean, when she slept with married Dean, when she hid the fact that she knew Lucy's boyfriend. She was perfect and everybody would eventually forgive her. Also, every boy would imediately and deeply fall in love with her. Also she never really showed any suffering, apart when she first broke up with Dean.

Everything you said in this video embodies rants I've gone on to my mom when we've watched this show. Everyone has their favorite bf for each of the girls, and Mom's favorite is Logan. I keep telling her "Logan encourages her at every turn to continue down the path of becoming the bad person she becomes! Being a supportive boyfriend does not mean helping you do bad stuff????" It is so frustrating to me how people don't recognize Rory's issues in all of this, and instead choose to blame all her life problems on other people. Honestly I don't know if she made any good decisions through the course of the show, but when you're younger those things don't matter so much.

I think although it is part of the whole gifted child syndrome that Rory struggles with, one of the things that people don't mention too often is her lack of experience with failure. It's not just that she has all these external and internal pressures on her. At the start of the show she has never had to even confront the possibility of failure. And when she is confronted with just the possibility, she has an Emily Gilmore worthy freak out. Once she gets past that she never goes back and reflects on the unpleasantness. It's like it never happened. She never really learns to cope with it. She never really considers it. And because she never deals with it, every time it happens it's like the first time. She really has trouble moving past it.
As far as boyfriends, I liked Logan. I didn't think he was great for Rory, but I think he was the best match of the three. I also don't see him as exactly like Christopher. He is more self situationally aware when we first meet him than Christopher is even as an adult. Logan knows he's a bit of a screw up and he knows he's not going to instantly stop screwing up just to please a girl. Christopher keeps thinking he can change to fit into Lorelei's life which keeps leading to drama. Logan tends to be a much better judge of character than Christopher too. Logan has screw up friends, but he's never surprised or disappointed when they screw up. Christopher is completely shocked when Sherri leaves him for her career even though that's exactly the kind of thing she would do.
All the Gilmore girls, Emily, Lorelei and Rory are very uncompromising. Emily and Lorelei have both crafted lives that they are proud of and they won't let anything interfere with that... sometimes to the detriment of personal relationships. Rory has one foot in each world, plus her world of books, and she really doesn't want to give any of them up. Dean fits really well into her Stars Hollow world. He's willing to meet her part way... read some of the books she likes... learn about her tastes in music and movies... but he'll never really be able to challenge her intellectually, and he'll never fit into her society world. Jess challenges her intellectually and is her equal I the world of books and ideas, but he despises both her Stars Hollow world and her society world. Logan can keep up with her intellectually. He is very bright. He is already more a part of her society world than she is. And because he has no ambitions of his own and is a people person, he kind of works in Stars Hollow too. He charms the people he meets there. He's not always great for her, but I personally feel like she was heading for a dumpster fire either way, because every successful person needs to cope with failure in a healthy way, and she doesn't.

I respect the opinions in this video however I love Rory’s journey because it reflects the experiences of a lot of us. Being a high achiever and on a trajectory for success but then circumstance and our own choices derail us and we feel we never quite fulfilled that potential. Similar to the song “this is me trying” by Taylor Swift. I see a lot of myself in that and it’s comforting I’m not the only one.

As per the voice change, Gilmore guys podcast covered that on a couple of episodes, even became a running bit of playing her weird voice changes “is that a new shirt? Because I like it”
