I think she was trying to seem the age of the character since she was older, so the voice is more the voice of a younger girl. Either that, or she was given a note to sound less adult/jaded/sarcastic.
Could also have to do with the mics and sound system in the pilot. Cause if you go back in look, in episode two and onward her voice is more high-pitched and young sounding.
Luke deserves so much credit, hes always there for anyone, even if he is a little grumpy doing it, he never puts himself first. He literally did everything Lorelai ever asked him to do. He is one of the top male characters ever for me.
yess!! and i do personally believe that he is the most reasonable one that lorelai had ever had an affair with. Apart from the fact that he had major difficulties expressing how he feels, he was always there when Lorelai feels sad 😭😭 Even Chris did not show up although they were in relationship with lorelai when Richard had a heart attack.
@@trips347 he was hallarious and what was basic about him? He has a really unique personality unlike people like max or logan who are exactly like every typical guy on a tv show
Honestly, I'm just surprised nobody in the show has died from a car accident. Everybody crosses the street without even looking and it's weird and freaky.
@@renemortensen5028 I have never met anyone as quick witted as Loreli and Rory much less a girl lol. I find it incredibly unrealistic. Like the wit is just a little too quick, that’s what people mean about they “talk fast.” I mean they are like delivering world class stand up comedian level wit consistently without missing a fraction of a beat. I still enjoy watching it since I started but that shit is completely unreasonable 😂
Nowadays, there is too long a list of boxes they have to check. Modern TV isn't about making realistic looking situations. It's about not offending the hoards of liberal children that are traumatized by anything resembling reality. After all, to modern liberals, gender is imaginary, and sexuality is a social construct.
@@DerekThomasLirio Yeah and if you look at gilmore girls: it's just a story of a single mom and her daugher. I mean, there are no politics involved or anything, just mother and daughter struggling their way up in a very cute town. It works really well and is way better than big projects like Netflix's Final Space or anything (it's a good comparison because Gilmore Girls focuses extremely well on character development and Final Space does not even care for character development. Everything just happens)
@@payneicecold3000 season 3 Dean was really inconsistent and annoying though. He broke up with Rory and a week later tries to start a fight with Jess saying "This is my town, I can hurt you and no one will care" oof
I think the reason why so many of us like Gilmore Girls, is based on a few factors: 1. The mother-daughter relationship between Lorelai and Rory. Honestly, their life together just fascinated me (and probably many others too). They were both witty and sort of even… eccentric? Their bond was unbreakable and like no other. While so many characters’ relationships with their mothers suffered (like Lane’s and Paris’s), Lorelai and Rory were true to each other. They made it through the good times and the bad, and were (almost) always there for each other. I guess many daughters wish for it to be like that with their moms too. 2. The “high school experience”. For me, personally, I loved the show for the way they portrayed the school and the school spirit. My school was pretty boring, and I just really thought that by watching movies/shows about high schools, I could get to relive a time through the screen of my TV. And let me say, it kind of worked :) 3. And finally, I think the show was such a hit because of how closely it resembled reality. Many people complain about how Rory regressed further through the show, or how Lane was supposed to “live her dream” instead of being “forced” into a marriage and having two kids, but I believe that THAT is exactly it. Life doesn’t always go to plan; we can’t always be the best at everything; going to a fancy private school and college doesn’t guarantee your success in life, and overall, life is so unpredictable. It can change in a blink of an eye. People can change in a blink of an eye - some for the better, and others for the worse. The worst thing is, that we don’t know what’s going to happen. We can be like Rory - have rich parents, be the best at everything, but still end up alone and wondering what the heck you’re doing with your life. And that is scary. That’s what makes this show so iconic, and no spin off (like Ginny and Georgia) will ever be able to replace Gilmore Girls.
This comment is extremely on point. I know many people get butthurt over the character flaws and changes, but that's how life works. No normal person stays the same throughout their lives, character development with respect to the main traits of the character is essential. Lorelai starts out as a wiser version of her 16yo self and still manages to grow as a character. She avoids commitment at first but as her relationship with her parents inevitably changes (when she gets in their shoes) she starts craving commitment and a steady relationship. She wants someone who will be there for her (like Emily was to her father). Whatever mistakes she makes along the way make sense (minor character regression to her 16yo self). Rory starts out as a responsible and sensible teen and then just as she moves out of her mother's house she finally gets to be irresponsible and irrational like almost every teen who had to be the adult in their relationship with their parents. Rory acts out and tries to find her true self through trial and error like all of us. It's an extremely realistic depiction of how our relationship with our parents affects our decision making and our characters to a degree...
The lip balms marketed to women won't electrocute men if they try to pick one up. If you want to smell like a toasted pancake marshmallow, live your dream.
Gilmore Girls was a show about life. Nothing happened and everything happened. It could get slow and boring, the characters were flawed, it was often about first word problems, but it still felt like growing up along with these people, like them or not. It was about all kinds of relationships, it was about family, friendship, career, your sense of self. It was very unrealistic in many aspects, but also very real and relatable in others. It has taught me so much. I used to watch since I was like 15, and I still watch it over and over again, seeing how differently I perceive the situations as I grow older, how differently I think and prioritize, how better I understand, how much more I notice and realize. It’s brilliant for that. It’s also funny and comforting to me, although that’s a matter of personal taste, I guess.
Completely agree! I was even younger (I was 9 in 2000, but I think the show came to Italy a couple of years later. I remember watching it in middle school, anyway) but I have the same feeling. I had a complete re-watch when it came to Netflix and it was just all the feels
Yes!! Now watching it when I’m older I totally see the characters differently! Like I use to hate Emily and now she is one of my favorites!! I literally rewatch this show every year 🤗🤗
YES!!! But then, I always thought she was. She's gold in plain sight, and the other 3 GG--the great GM; Lorelai; and Rory--are iron pyrite. Emily loved her husband as an equal partner for 40 years; she tried to instill good morals and values into her ungrateful brat of a daughter; she tried to do the same with Rory, only to have that twit turn out to be like her mother, all because of a Logan penis; so what if Emily couldn't keep a maid for long--those were NOT relationships, and unlike Lorelai, she didn't condescend to them an approval she never felt.
First of all, she was a manager at the inn. Secondly, they were part of an extremely small town where everything was pretty cheap. Remember the BWR movie theatre where each movie was $1!?!?!
I’ve rewatched the entire series more than I’d like to admit. It’s like going home! The episodes are so effortless and the drama isn’t too much or too cheesy if there even is any. My absolute favorite series. I’m happy you made a video on It!
Oh my god I have seen the full series like 7 times and I’m watching it again ...... I have a problem , but it’s so goooood it’s so simple yet captures you in a way that other shows can’t
Fun fact: Lukes truck was actually my grandmas truck, she gave it to them to use for the show, and since the show ended we have it back now. I always thought that was so cool.
@@Blitzbrie im not sure what the last sentence means, but yeah, its not believable. Im sure their grandma was a big fan of this teenage centered show, + somehow had a truck they wanted, managed to contact the directors even though this was around 2000 and elders can barely work cell phones nowadays, much less whatever they had back then. Get real
@@Paidnotspaid420 First off, this show's fanbase is largely adults. And 2nd, why would the grandma have to be a fan or need a cell phone? There's a million ways something like this can happen. I do some work in the entertainment industry, and besides putting out classified ads in the papers that you're looking for something, which happens even to this day, it's also incredibly common for people working in TV/Film to see something they like somewhere and ask the owner if it can be borrowed for a scene or a music video and that they'll pay for it. It really isn't that complicated. Makes you seem like a total weirdo to be so adamant about the idea that there's absolutely no way in hell this could've happened and that it's totally impossible. Things like this happen ALL the time and by pure statistics, someone somewhere has to know the person that something like this happened to? What's so crazy about that lmao. Is there a chance they're lying? Maybe. But it's not so crazy that it requires so much skepticism is my point. At best, It's just a cool anecdote, nothing more. No need to be such a miserable edgelord.
i adored rory in the first two seasons, before she graduated chilton. but i feel like she lost some of her original character as the show progressed. i mean, characters change, but compare first and last episode rory's. they're almost entirely different people. i still love rory in every season, but ahh, i'm not good with change
I was always very impressed by the way the actors were able to deliver their lines in such brisk succession! Plus, the appeal came from the closeness of the "Mother/Daughter" bond between Lorelai and Rory, since Lorelai was a teen mother, and Rory kept her grounded. Rory was a compelling character, at least until the latter seasons and the revival made her SO entitled and unlikable!😣
Arty Bookworm She was definitely at a crossroads in the Netflix season, but she was going into a self destructive spiral and not taking any personal responsibility, nor was anyone willing to call her out on it. She shows no initiative with journalism, coasting her reputation on one article she wrote some point prior and makes no effort on her next project. She’s given an angle and within five minutes of investigating gives up on it, and when she goes to a job interview with a web blog she assumes the position is hers and comes in with no pitches on stories whatsoever. Lois Lane is more intrepid reporter on her off days. Even by the end of the season everything seems to fall into Rory’s lap with no effort on her part whatsoever. The horribly misconceived forgotten boyfriend gag that’s run throughout the season, where Rory keeps mentioning she should break up with him but puts it off, is also wrapped up with Rory doing nothing about it, he finally gets the hint and breaks up with her over text message literally in the last five minutes. Paul is an afterthought as far as Rory is concerned, and the character is a mean spirited joke (Lorelei remarks that he’s like the Marvel films, forgettable, and I have major problems with that joke beyond it being out of character for Lorelei) that should have been finished in the first episode. If Rory had been more self reflective and had more initiative in her storylines, perhaps coming out of her 30-something crisis better than she had while in it, she’d be a more engaging character. She never takes responsibility for her decisions and actions (or inactions), her plot threads resolve without much action on her part. The journalism ends because of her apathy towards working for it, Paul breaks up with her and Logan is the one to call off their affair.
it reminds me of chase hudson and my ex who was lowkey manipulative lmao 😭😭 actually everything about dean reminded me of my ex even his looks so i never really liked him 😭😭
DM Animation Toxic does not always need to mean dangerous to your physical health. The term “toxic” is often used in these situations, meaning “rude”, “mean” or other things you could think of.
Glenda Reitze Logan was literally the worst, he cheated on her and she had so much Stockholm syndrome towards him, I agree with u otherwise tho, but Jess was definitely meant for her, not when they were dating but when he came to show her his book they should’ve gotten back together, he was the only person in this show that Showed any growth
Melina Makri Yeah she was so adorable and innocent then near the end she just started to do more stuff like her mom... but in a bad way... (I love Lorelai and Rory❤️)
@@KikiMeowKitty Actually yes! In real life, when the show premiered in 2000, Lane was 27 & Cristopher was 31. Honestly, Keiko Agena deserves all the awards for portraying a 16 year old while being a decade older irl.
the characters were definitely more relatable back then. Nowadays everyone is overdressed or overmakeuped for simple situations... it is just not believable
I disagree, I'm tired of the same "smart but shy and like, really pretty" main character girl. Now we have more diverse characters who aren't the same as every other character. I don't know about you but I relate more to a show being real than a show with overused similarities to my life. I like characters who are flawed, who you grow attached to.
dude it just bugs me sooooo much when i see a girl that's suppossed to be poor in a tv show, and she has a full face of makeup, hair done and a fancy dye on it, and on top of that.....frikin' expensive ass lingerie.....

yasmine mixon SERIOUSLY, just think about how many boys and men did the 90s haircut justice, among my favorite are Jared Leto in my so called life, Leonardo DiCaprio, Devon Sawa in Casper the friendly ghost, Skeet Ulrich in Scream, and, in my humble opinion, the King of the 90s curtain, Russel Crowe in the Quick and the Dead. In the same way I got to express appreciation for the 90s haircut, I hope to be able to bash the early 2000s flat fringes, super low rise jeans and unflattering makeup in the future. 😂👍
the reason i love gilmore girls cause it’s a more realistic teen show. the main characters focus on studies and school and first relationships. it’s refreshing to see after seeing completely unrelatable accounts of teen life, such as euphoria ginny and georgia gossip girl etc. for me, paris geller is the most relatable character ever lmao. i just love a teen show not all about drugs and partying and alcohol.
Yes! It is also a brilliant look at the American class system. Then you've got the show's title. I think Gilmore Girls means all of the girls who the Gilmores know. Most of the stories focus on the female characters.
Am i the only one that thinks that rory’s storyline is more... realistic? Everyone keeps saying she got worst, but I just feel like its more realistic. She was always portrayed as an angel and very idealized, but she’s not perfect, no one is, and they show that as she grows up. Not to mention, being a young adult is a confusing time and I think they highlighted it pretty well. Ya her development was a little disappointing no doubt, but also realistic in my opinion.
Rory became such a shitty person like especially when she got arrested and ignored lorelei, when she had the affair with dean (i think he was pretty shitty too he cheated on his wife) but like i still love her purely because her chemistry and bond with lorelei is so unbreakable that it just makes me root for the both of them. also, lorelei is the best person to ever live.
Yup, I really like the show, but in retrospective Lorelai and Rory were terrible people. (I have nothing against the actresses, I think they are great.) Like I said, I liked the show: I binged it a couple of times. But each time I'll notice more and more how afwul they treat other people in their lives, especially their boyfriends. Okay, their love interest weren't perfect either. Even when they are helping out with various town charities events, it's like they're doing it for show to redeem themselves: like "hey look at us, we are good people, town spirit and all that." But they come off as self absorbed and egocentric sometimes. But I still like the characters overall though, they are not perfect and it's fun to see their really bad sides with their personal journeys through life. However, the reboot: A Year in the Life. What kind of crap was that. That was a big fuck you to the fans. I feel this was written by someone who really hates Lorelai and Rory. They come of as utter assholes. Almost nothing redeemable about the main characters. (Unless you count Emily as a Gilmore Girl... she was great and bettered her life. Kelly Bishop is awesome.) Rory is straight up bad. Cheating on her "boyfriend" en just being so entiteled. Like that arc where she tought she would just be given a job by that woman she half-knew. She got a reality check. On the original series: I really liked Luke (although now that I think about it he is also kind of twatwaffle sometimes), Taylor, Kirk and TJ. And I really loved Paris. (I'm a guy btw.) At first I thought is was because of Liza Weil, who I find an attractive woman. But I think I was really in love with the character Paris. (Yes, I might have some issues).
It was definitely the fact that shows back then were more witty. The way they play off of each other when they have conversations was a lot more entertaining back then. Almost improvised. Now it’s like you can REALLY tell that every conversation in a show is scripted.
actually the scriptwriter, amy sherman palladino, wanted the actors to say the lines exactly the way they were written. when lauren graham was auditioning she tried to say it the way she thought her character would and amy told her to say the lines the way they were written in the film!
@@GoddessCynthia i am a hige gilmore girls fan (My daughters name was completely based on me having the ability to call her Rory) and I didnt hear a lot of judgements...I actually think the review was great.
I can't tell if I envy Lorelai and Rory's relationship or think it's toxic. Like they're really close but sometimes it feels too close like I feel like Lorelai wants to be let in on every single thing in Rory's life without boundaries.
I understand what you mean. My relationship with my mom was more like Emily and Lorelai, where she meant well but was over controlling, I had to lie a lot and hide things. So having a relationship that close and being able to tell my mother anything sounds good to me 😅.
i know this comment is old, but trust me it sucks. my mom and i are quite literally clones of lorelai and rory (absent dad, rocky relationship w/ parents, the whole deal) and my mom thinks she's my best friend when sometimes it's so bad bc there's some things i want to keep private and sometimes she oversteps that boundary and i'm never able to have my own life
Gilmore Girls is actually one of my favorite shows from that era. I think its biggest successes are that they know their characters and write them all accordingly with realistic development, and also the unrealistic yet witty dialogue that I wish I could come up with at the drop of a hat like the rest of the fictional characters on this show do.
The creator Amy Sherman-Palladino actually talks like that if you've ever seen her in an interview. Lauren Graham (Lorelai) kind of does too, just without as many references, hence her biography which is called "Talking As Fast As I Can".
They flesh out the characters like emily and explore them in a realistic way. I saw that persons like emily are somewhat realistic in bonding with some conflict over a grandkid, just that the show is more idealistic. Even with a traumatic divorce, even through the dicorce didnt happen but he had a lover. She still has contact regulary but the strained but happening relationships are so realistic. Yeah, they are like real people, just zany to 100. But maybe americans are that zany.
I honestly love Lorelai. She is definitely my favorite character in the show. I know some people don’t like her but I have so much respect for her being a 16 year old, single, mother raising a child. She literally started from nothing and she turned out to be a great, humble, funny person.
honestly Lorelai was the first character i have first hesitated to love or not to love. She is a strong woman that was able to over come such hard sides of life even when she was a 16 year old teenage- not to mention she did not ask for help to her parents even tho i don't really get why but that is also appreciatable.- I cannot really say that i don't appreciate her mom skills. She was such a sweetheart to Rory. But her love life was such a hard equation😪 Like i didn't even recognize her while she was in this love triangle with Chris and Luke. She was such a greedy person back then.
I tried to shut up but this video is full of delusional people with false points. Lorelai was born into a rich family. She only had self manufactured problems. She decides to sleep with a boy at 16 and get pregnant. Then her smart idea was to runaway from home with the baby to go God knows where. This from having a family that can provide everything they needed easy. She then lucks into a situation where some random person takes her in and helps with EVERYTHING. This is a pattern that is shown throughout. The woman who ran the inn, Babette, luke, her parents (who she hates until she needs something. Great to have rich parents to fall back on isn't it) and who knows how many others have helped her. This is not some story of empowerment but of immaturity an idiocy.
I love Gilmore Girls (me and my mom's fav show to watch together) but my main problem is that there's almost no character development. Rory still cheats, is still sort of bratty, Lorelei still hasn't talked with Luke about issues with them, etc etc.. Anyway thanks for coming to my Ted-Talk (ppl are pointing out that some ppl did have character development and their absolutely positively correct it's just dissatisfactory that some of the more main characters didn't improve)
That’s true, they never really gain self awareness. Emily does in the revival though! I always wanted to watch with my mom but she thinks Lorelai is too immature:’)
Welcome to real life, ha-ha. We make stupid mistakes and then, when everybody else thinks we're going to grow, we make the same mistakes. With plenty of luck, we make different mistakes.
@@beta910 yeah, I was really glad about that part, he was one of my favorite characters. it was just sort of disappointing that some of the main characters didn't grow.
I think that was the problem. People thought she was a Mary Sue character so they decided to do more with her..I honestly thought she was too goody goody in the high school seasons and even more nauseating was how the whole town worshipped her
@@yummylemons172 Nah, I liked her. She was quick, witty, kind, sweet, etc. I began to dislike her changes when she cheated with dean and when she dropped out of college and that kinda crap. I mean life does a lot of things to people. like the show is 7 Seasons long as she goes from 16 to 23 a lot happens in that period of time, it is one of the craziest points of someone's life so of course she's going to change a lot.

Just started bingeing GG on Netflix under quarantine and I'm totally converted! I love this show - it's so compelling and comforting to watch. I love the dialogue. I was also a '90s kid but didn't watch this show when it was actually airing. I like the throwbacks - the characters transitioning from landlines to flip phones, the pop culture references. It feels nostalgic watching it now because it reminds me of high school.
Same 😭 it aired on TV when I was 5 years old in 2001. I watched it with my mom throughout the years and now that I'm older I rewatch it on Netflix for the memories and because like you said its a comforting show. :)
I read GG as in Rory's father daughter, and not Girlmore Girls... Please forgive my stupidity, here's a like cool person in the internet, I hope you enjoyed the show.
He should watch the whole thing, then we can watch him ravage Logan, Marty, Tristan, basically all of Rory’s nearly boyfriends and actual boyfriends. Edit: Whoops I forgot to include Jess, TEAM JESS FOR LIFE MY GUYS
The mom managed an inn, so finding a place to be ravaged by men was never a problem. That would typically make her easy for all the poor guys. But she goes to a private school, so that was just the training ground. LOL.
Marty just bugged he was simply so creepy and turned out to be passive aggressive in the end pretending he didn't know her....I mean I get he was rejected but making her feel guilty about it? What a d**k

Having not actually watched Gilmore Girls, I didn't know his character's name was Dean, I just thought he accidently called him Dean when he meant Sam, lol
My sister walked in on me watching the show on Netflix once and the second she saw Padalecki, she asked, "What's he doing there?" then she heard them say "Dean" and she said in a very loud tone, "HIS NAME IS DEAN????" If you hadn't guessed by now, she's an avid Supernatural fan!
I’m only 23 and I loved every single of it, watched it like around 10 months ago. I can’t find anything to fill the void now :( I watched himym too. Ugh great shows
I love this show. Which is quite funny bc I don't like most of the characters. Rory? grows up to be quite entitled, thinks she is the most important and talented person on earth. Dean? cheats on his wife. Jess? inconsiderate of literally everyone's feelings. Logan? Thinks he can get away with anything and cheats on his fiancee. Paris? I mean I kinda like her but she is just so frustrating. Taylor is the most annoying person. Kirk can be an ass. Anna literally blames Luke for her own decision not to tell him that she is pregnant. Emily and Richard think they are doing what's best for Lorelai and Rory, while end up doing the exact opposite, so I kinda don't know how to feel about them...basically, I just love Lorelai and Sookie.... and literally no one cares
Didn't Lorelai kinds cheat too? Like emotionally and physically. Cause every time something happened in any relationship she was in she would run off to Christopher or Mr.Madena(not even sure if I spelled that correctly but I know you got what I meant lol). All while stringing the homie Luke along. I love the show forever but Lorelai pissed me off the most even tho hers and my personality quick wit and fast pace speaking wise match lol.
Ha ha, excellent call!😂 While the first season was hardly a contender for the Emmys, at least you could tell what was happening, and the situations felt relatable. Now, you're lucky enough to find ONE thing that isn't completely nonsensical per episode!
I know this is an old video but the reason Lorelai didn’t want to talk with her parents was because from her perspective she had a very toxic relationship with them and didn’t want to reconnect (though we later learn that Emily did want to reconnect)
I just finished watching the show and I really liked it. But in the later seasons it just wasn't the same. Lane had better, more positive, character development than Rory which surprised me. I get that Rory didn't have to remain the same sweet innocent girl, but I lost my respect for her pretty much in season 5. One hint - (he was married)
Funny how Rory is so innocent and nice here, when she becomes such an entitled, hypocritical, cheating mess by the end of the series. By entitled I mean: that she thought she was better than certain people - rich people. Which is funny, considering that’s where she comes from. She’s shown this numerous times since she went to Yale. Also when she demanded a job from that news agency. Yes, that can be seen as empowering and ambitious, whatever tickles your pickle, but she thought that she deserved a position that wasn’t there - i.e. entitlement. And even putting that aside, by the end of the series she’s still a giant mess that’s having an affair with Logan. The character turned sour, unfortunately.
True, in later seasons, she dropped out of Yale and stole a yacht, something that Rory of earlier seasons would never even consider, especially since Yale was her dream from an early age.
Yeah now they just make female characters say stuff like "white patriarchy" as a substitute for them actually being smart and independently minded lmao
6:49 "Lorelai, here's something to think about. You don't want to accept help from your father and me. What if Rory didn't want to accept help from you?"
Justice for Lane! She deserved to live out her rock dreams, not be stuck with two kids. :( Edit: This is really still causing arguments a whole year later- Lane and Zach were married and used protection but it was cheap and therefore didn't work, Lane took the kids in her stride, however, touring and doing proper gigs is off the table when you have two small children. Just because Lane eventually became a good mother doesn't mean she wasn't initially disappointed, and I felt as if the storyline was out of place and disappointing because it required her putting things on hold, like when she was heavily pregnant and she and Zach had to give up that tour with a popular band. Lane is allowed to be a good mother and embrace that and fans can still be unhappy with the plotline. Also, if you're anti-abortion (let's face it, you're not 'pro-life' if you don't care about the mother's life or the hundreds of children in the adoption system already that you do nothing for) I don't like you, I am pro-choice, get out of my replies, and to that JJ person using this to rant about feminists and r*pe, what the hell is wrong with you lol? I never brought that topic up, and it's weird that you thought that sensitive topic was in any way correlated with this. Anyhow, rant over, Lane deserved better.
@Heru Jr. of Kemet she literally had sex, it’s not her fault for consenting to have sex with her husband? Zack should have used protection. That’s assuming that they didn’t.
@Heru Jr. of Kemet you should always use protection. And why should Lane have to listen to her mother? I’m a bisexual Christian and even if my parents were homophobic (they’re not) I wouldn’t let them decide who I’m with!
I really used to like Rory in the beginning but after a while, i kinda realized how she was so pampered, not only by Lorelai, but by her grandparents, and literally the entire town. Like when she and dean first broke up, the whole town kept blaming Dean when she was the one who didn’t say “I love you back”. Yes, she was smart, but the writers on the show also made her get into Harvard, Yale, and Princeton (unrealistic much??), and lmk how Paris doesn’t get into Harvard (and she totally deserved it). Lorelai always said that Rory got in on her own, but come on, not only did Richard go there but she had so many other family that were Yale alumni (which really helps the admissions process). And I know Lorelai ran away from home and got a great job to take care of her daughter, but I hated how she acted like she completely left the “privilege world” when her parents were literally ready to pay anything for Rory, whether it was Chilton or even Yale. Anyways, sorry for ranting :(
Moonshath Haque When Dean is watching Willy Wonka with them, Lorelei warns Dean not to do anything bad to her or risk the wrath of the townspeople. Rory herself does realise how people see her after the car crash with Jess, and he gets all the blame. Rory struggles with no one even thinking of her own part in the decision that leads to the crash.
On the Paris thing, I think it was important for her not to get in because of specific aspects of her character, although I love her to death, Paris had very little life outside of getting into harvard, she had two friends who she didn't trust or like that much, she had no social life and worked constantly, she is insanely competitive and every extra curricular or volunteer position was in the pursuit of making her application better rather than any sort of personal fullfilment. She is essentially a product of cold parents and the pressures of Chilton. Though abrasive, she is the perfect model for a chilton student and an ivy league candidate and yet she is rejected from her dream school, despite doing everything right. I think it's meant to show that these pressures from parents and schools are not always conducive to success and though Paris is driven and still goes to college, the way she was raised leaves her lacking in social skills and compassion, etc. Leaving her very emotionally unequipped unlike Rory.
@@pia1945 On the lorelai and emily thing, though I found it frustrating, I look back on it and realise it was actually a very deliberate and honest portrayal of a complex mother daughter relationship. I as an adult struggle communicating with my mother because I don't trust her, partly because she lies a lot now, but mostly because she betrayed my trust as a child and teenager and not feeling secure around the person who raised you screws you up. The worst part is I know that, in some sad way, she did the best she could and that's the same for Lorelai, she knows emily tried her best but it hurts to know that it wasn't what you needed. I rewatch the show and find comfort that emily and lorelai still love each other, even if its hard and misunderstood love. It's still there and its what makes the show so great.
I genuinely grew up with this show: I was 7 when it premiered, and I have watched it in its entirety. As such, I'd like to give you my reasons. 1) It's a coral show. Usually, you have TV shows focused on a specific family (or just a teenager) and doesn't flesh out the others. Here, you care about everyone in Stars Hollow, from Kirk doing his awkwardly funny stuff, to Sookie and her cooking abilities; 2) Your opinion about this show changes as you grow up. When I was a kid and a teenager, Rory seemed to me like the perfect girl, and I really wanted to have someone like her as a friend. Now that I'm in my 20s, I despy her, after seeing how she evolved; 3) This show can aim at every target, and doesn't shy away from it. I mean, the main characters are literally a mother and a daughter who can have wealth from their rich parents AND a pair who struggles and fights to get what they want; 4) It features realistic characters and events. In particular, you have the fast talking. Sure, I don't think someone would crack so many pop culture references all the time (Lauren Graham herself didn't know about a lot of the references she was spitting out), but the way they talked seemed so real; I don't know about the others, but there is a lot about this show. It's just a shame its magic and nature was ruined by the Netflix revival, and in fact I hope you could do something about it.
@@bugly1 I mean I don't like what became of Rory but it's realistic at least. But I did like some parts of the revival though like the tribute to Richard and the actor that played him and Luke and Lorelei's story.
I never got the obsession with Jess... sure he was like sooooo hawt like omg. But he was just a terrible person to everyone. Including Lorelai and Luke.
Actually, in Connecticut, all schools are private. But they are all in tiers of private-ness: Tier 1: Only 1 courtyard, and a highly restricted dress code. Tier 2: On Friday’s, there is afternoon tea. And apparently, everyone is a genius that dresses in plaid. Tier 3: From preschool, children are taking college level classes. High tea is a must, and they all ride horses. Tier 4: Basically Tier 3, but everyone talks in a British accent.
I honestly avoided watching this video for so long because I didn’t want to hear someone bashing my favorite show. My relationship to my mom is very similar to Rory’s relationship to Lorelei (with unfortunately less cooler comebacks) and I grew up watching this show. I can say 1000% that it is my all time favorite show. The issues were interesting and I loved the “teen pregnancy” aspect because it was interesting but not overdone.
Everybody is going on that Rory was always a terrible character and she wasn’t. The affair with Dean was stupid because they always made Rory out to be extremely smart. And when she drops out I feel like they were alluding to when Lorelei always saying “you are your mother’s daughter” because Lorelei made a lot of mistakes in her teen/young adult years.
It’s 2023 and this show is still popular . I remembered watching this show when it first aired in the early 2000s. Since it’s now on Netflix, it has new fans that just discovered it from all over the world. For one thing, they don’t make teen shows like this anymore. The overall cast literally had great chemistry and were authentic. Also to me, Alexis Bledel was an angelic classic beauty that graced US tv during that time and Lauren Graham was a cool mom, the combination of them made the series enjoyable to watch. The writing esp the first few seasons were so witty and funny. And many teen girls can relate to Rory. You don’t see this formula with many YA shows these days. I think Netflix is starting to figure out what makes a show successful and did it with their recent hit Wednesday: the chemistry/authenticity of the cast and the writing made it a global hit. And hopefully they can keep it up. But I definitely miss the CW/WB days, hopefully the industry sees that winning formula again.
i'm confused why the caption says "why did everyone like gilmore girls so much," he barely makes fun of it and actually says that it's a good show that he likes lol
rory became stupid after Jess. Jess kept her on the straight and narrow. He was mad she dropped out of school, and even though he ditched on her, he did it because he was afraid of holding her back, then she had that affair with Dean, and then she got with Logan who she deserved 100% because both were awful.
@@shanyajohnson2623 Yeah, I agree with you. While Logan was an ok character, he wasn't good boyfriend material, and neither was Dean. It wasn't beneficial to him OR to Rory in the long run, and I'm glad Rory refused his proposal (although I am *NOT* happy about the fact that she was cheating with him in A Year In The Life).
Personally, I’ve always disliked Lorelei. She’s very self absorbed and never bothers to view a situation from an others perspective. For example, she acts as if her parents literally ruined her life by being strict and rich. She never tries to repair her relationship with them and projects her hate for them onto Rory. Furthermore she treats Rory like a child even when she’s in her twenties. Not to mention, she fails to criticize her daughters flaws and leads Rory believe she can do no wrong
TV shows today: Girl: "How's it going?" Boy: "Cool" *super edgy eye roll* Girl: "I'm not like other girls" Generic gay best friend: "Yeah she's different" Boy: "Fun" *super edgy hair flip* Girl: "We've known each other for so long" Boy: "Yep" *flashback to them meeting three weeks ago* -guy and girl date for three seconds, do the devils tango, get into a totally unnecessary and avoidable fight, break up, get back together a few ep before the season finale-
You got to throw in that they both do completely irredeemable crap behind each other's backs that highlight the toxicity of their relationship only for one of them to spout some fortune cookie philosophy the writers mistook for depth that somehow makes everything okay.
I wish I was alive in the 90s. I mean, friends, celebrating an entirely new millennium, Lisa Frank, no irrational SJWs. It’s the greatest era basically. Also, none of this Brexit and Trump bullshit.
Fun fact: Sookie was originally meant to be lesbian, but the producer or network or something said that people weren’t ready for a major character to be gay in television.
Rorys voice went from normal to very high and chipper as the seasons went on
i know right?! kinda weird
Ariana has no tears left to cry I always noticed that when watching the later episodes
Yeah, really annoying.
Luke deserves so much credit, hes always there for anyone, even if he is a little grumpy doing it, he never puts himself first. He literally did everything Lorelai ever asked him to do. He is one of the top male characters ever for me.
He's the best omg love that guy. Plus he's hallarious
yess!! and i do personally believe that he is the most reasonable one that lorelai had ever had an affair with. Apart from the fact that he had major difficulties expressing how he feels, he was always there when Lorelai feels sad 😭😭 Even Chris did not show up although they were in relationship with lorelai when Richard had a heart attack.
Luke was one of the best male love interests I've ever seen in these types of shows.
Sorry but that guy was soo basic and boring and always serious and negative. Dunno what Lorelai saw in him.

Dean was always boring
I think the reason why so many of us like Gilmore Girls, is based on a few factors:
And let me say, it kind of worked :)

I was always very impressed by the way the actors were able to deliver their lines in such brisk succession! Rory was a compelling character, at least until the latter seasons and the revival made her SO entitled and unlikable!😣
Hey ur prob,y still watching the vid now
Yeah I hated Rory later in the season
I agree, she wasn't very likable in the revival. I get things happen and people change, but hers just felt more drastic to me.
Arty Bookworm she was ridiculous. After everything she were she ended up like a teen mother and living a shitty Life
Arty Bookworm She was definitely at a crossroads in the Netflix season, but she was going into a self destructive spiral and not taking any personal responsibility, nor was anyone willing to call her out on it.
The journalism ends because of her apathy towards working for it, Paul breaks up with her and Logan is the one to call off their affair.

yasmine mixon SERIOUSLY, just think about how many boys and men did the 90s haircut justice, among my favorite are Jared Leto in my so called life, Leonardo DiCaprio, Devon Sawa in Casper the friendly ghost, Skeet Ulrich in Scream, and, in my humble opinion, the King of the 90s curtain, Russel Crowe in the Quick and the Dead. In the same way I got to express appreciation for the 90s haircut, I hope to be able to bash the early 2000s flat fringes, super low rise jeans and unflattering makeup in the future. 😂👍
E BOYS
yasmine mixon I love ruel💕💕finally someone knows him
the reason i love gilmore girls cause it’s a more realistic teen show. the main characters focus on studies and school and first relationships. it’s refreshing to see after seeing completely unrelatable accounts of teen life, such as euphoria ginny and georgia gossip girl etc. for me, paris geller is the most relatable character ever lmao. i just love a teen show not all about drugs and partying and alcohol.
Yes! It is also a brilliant look at the American class system. Then you've got the show's title. I think Gilmore Girls means all of the girls who the Gilmores know. Most of the stories focus on the female characters.
4:37 who knew the 90s haircut would be an eboys main style a mere 30 years later
Lmao
My heart stopped when you said “I know a teen Vampire when I see one, run for your life RORY!!!” *from Laughter of Course
Great grammer...
I think "Gilmore girls" is a rare gem when it comes to tv shows of its time.
It’s so good right! I love it
Despite the pop culture references it’s aged surprisingly well.
It’s for sure one of the best
Am i the only one that thinks that rory’s storyline is more... realistic? Everyone keeps saying she got worst, but I just feel like its more realistic. She was always portrayed as an angel and very idealized, but she’s not perfect, no one is, and they show that as she grows up. Not to mention, being a young adult is a confusing time and I think they highlighted it pretty well. Ya her development was a little disappointing no doubt, but also realistic in my opinion.
I love Gilmore Girls, but Rory started to get more bratty during the seasons
Poisonous Jinx at yale i think she felt more entitled bc there was so much more just being handed to her and she got used to it :c
Sara Divine Shouldn't have read this comment... Now I'm fed with too much spoilers that it hurts.
Yes
Rory became such a shitty person like especially when she got arrested and ignored lorelei, when she had the affair with dean (i think he was pretty shitty too he cheated on his wife) but like i still love her purely because her chemistry and bond with lorelei is so unbreakable that it just makes me root for the both of them. also, lorelei is the best person to ever live.
Yup, I really like the show, but in retrospective Lorelai and Rory were terrible people. (I have nothing against the actresses, I think they are great.)
Like I said, I liked the show: I binged it a couple of times.
Kelly Bishop is awesome.)
Rory is straight up bad.
Carly Michelle *coughs*Riverdale*coughs*

actually the scriptwriter, amy sherman palladino, wanted the actors to say the lines exactly the way they were written. when lauren graham was auditioning she tried to say it the way she thought her character would and amy told her to say the lines the way they were written in the film!

I can't tell if I envy Lorelai and Rory's relationship or think it's toxic. Like they're really close but sometimes it feels too close like I feel like Lorelai wants to be let in on every single thing in Rory's life without boundaries.
If my mom was anything like Lorelai I would move at the age of 10....
That whole debacle about Yale in season 3 was where it got bad. Lorelei didn’t even apologise for it, it was ridiculous

She just doesn’t have the best morals tho
honestly Lorelai was the first character i have first hesitated to love or not to love. She was such a greedy person back then.
i agree!!!
agreed :)

Anyway thanks for coming to my Ted-Talk
(ppl are pointing out that some ppl did have character development and their absolutely positively correct it's just dissatisfactory that some of the more main characters didn't improve)
That’s true, they never really gain self awareness. Emily does in the revival though! I always wanted to watch with my mom but she thinks Lorelai is too immature:’)

Which of Rory’s and Lorelai’s boyfriend did you like best?

Deer Lord EXACTLY and they way she treated her grandparents after she wen back to college.
True, in later seasons, she dropped out of Yale and stole a yacht, something that Rory of earlier seasons would never even consider, especially since Yale was her dream from an early age.
Caitriona Quigley Harvard was her dream but then her grandparents convinced her to go to Yale

Justice for Lane! She deserved to live out her rock dreams, not be stuck with two kids. :(
Edit: This is really still causing arguments a whole year later-
Lane and Zach were married and used protection but it was cheap and therefore didn't work, Lane took the kids in her stride, however, touring and doing proper gigs is off the table when you have two small children. Anyhow, rant over, Lane deserved better.
fr I didn’t like that she was basically pressured into motherhood when she obviously wasn’t ready :((
@Heru Jr. of Kemet she literally had sex, it’s not her fault for consenting to have sex with her husband? Zack should have used protection. That’s assuming that they didn’t.
@@mia-lo3zj Ikr!!!
@Heru Jr. of Kemet you should always use protection. And why should Lane have to listen to her mother? I’m a bisexual Christian and even if my parents were homophobic (they’re not) I wouldn’t let them decide who I’m with!
Yea it felt so jarring when she said she wanted to keep the baby (I know it was because of her region but she clearly didn't want to be pregnant)
Anyways, sorry for ranting :(
Moonshath Haque exactly !
I agree tjat Paris deserved to go to Harvard, but remember her interview? That was probably the reason she didn't get in... she sounded kinda crazy😂

I genuinely grew up with this show: I was 7 when it premiered, and I have watched it in its entirety. As such, I'd like to give you my reasons.
1) It's a coral show. Usually, you have TV shows focused on a specific family (or just a teenager) and doesn't flesh out the others. Here, you care about everyone in Stars Hollow, from Kirk doing his awkwardly funny stuff, to Sookie and her cooking abilities;
2) Your opinion about this show changes as you grow up. When I was a kid and a teenager, Rory seemed to me like the perfect girl, and I really wanted to have someone like her as a friend. Now that I'm in my 20s, I despy her, after seeing how she evolved;
3) This show can aim at every target, and doesn't shy away from it. I mean, the main characters are literally a mother and a daughter who can have wealth from their rich parents AND a pair who struggles and fights to get what they want;
4) It features realistic characters and events. In particular, you have the fast talking. Sure, I don't think someone would crack so many pop culture references all the time (Lauren Graham herself didn't know about a lot of the references she was spitting out), but the way they talked seemed so real;
I don't know about the others, but there is a lot about this show. It's just a shame its magic and nature was ruined by the Netflix revival, and in fact I hope you could do something about it.
Ugh, the revival is the worst. Yet everywhere I looked, people were giving it these glowing reviews. Um, did we watch the same show???
@@bugly1 I mean I don't like what became of Rory but it's realistic at least. But I did like some parts of the revival though like the tribute to Richard and the actor that played him and Luke and Lorelei's story.

Idiot Leg tier 4 😂
🤣🤣
I really believed you there till you got to tier 3 lmaoo
In my defense I'm not American and know nothing about Connecticut 🤣
Well then
Halapecia shaniqua, most Americans probably would’ve believed that.
the dialogue in this show is everything.
I love Gilmore Girls, except when Rory has the affair with Dean and when she drops out 😒😒😒😒
Yeah I honestly thought the same thing
Everybody is going on that Rory was always a terrible character and she wasn’t. The affair with Dean was stupid because they always made Rory out to be extremely smart. And when she drops out I feel like they were alluding to when Lorelei always saying “you are your mother’s daughter” because Lorelei made a lot of mistakes in her teen/young adult years.
Raina Heidkamp THAT WAS SO ANNOYING LIKE GIRL GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER😤😤
That's everyone's opinion lol
dont even mention dean 🤢 lollll
who DOESN'T wanna smell like *YAH I'M DATING MY COUSIN SO WHAT?*
Weird but true
I was adopted so I can date all the cousins I want😉
@@sailormoonstone5172 still not allowed
• Akza • meh 😎
@@sailormoonstone5172 DAMN NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT!
Rory becomes the worst type of person during the latter seasons.
Latter?
Rachael Lefkovic I frickin hated dean
@@burnthotpocket4940 same haha
The best characters were Jesse, Ms patty, and Luke tbh
@@burnthotpocket4940 why?
i'm confused why the caption says "why did everyone like gilmore girls so much," he barely makes fun of it and actually says that it's a good show that he likes lol
Lol yeah I guess your right!
He answered the question. The title doesn't imply that he's going to hate on the show.
But it’s overrated lmao
@@Ivuxoxo have you watched the whole show season 1-7?? If not u shouldnt be talking because it is a perfectly rated show
@@kiaraalbino128 yes I have watched the entire show
I rewatched it this autumn and I found out that I really despise Rory, while I love Lorelai and Emily (especially when they're interacting lol)
100%, I loved this show so much and rewatching it the last few weeks has made me realize how much I dislike Rory
When I watched S1 back in the day, I really liked Tristan (Chad Michael Murray), but he had to go off and do One Tree Hell so BOOOO
rory became stupid after Jess.
Spot on
TV shows today:
Girl: "How's it going?"
Boy: "Cool" *super edgy eye roll*
Girl: "I'm not like other girls"
Generic gay best friend: "Yeah she's different"
Boy: "Fun" *super edgy hair flip*
Girl: "We've known each other for so long"
Boy: "Yep" *flashback to them meeting three weeks ago*
-guy and girl date for three seconds, do the devils tango, get into a totally unnecessary and avoidable fight, break up, get back together a few ep before the season finale-
You should write a book 😂
CEO Of IDC INC. pretty much lol
You got to throw in that they both do completely irredeemable crap behind each other's backs that highlight the toxicity of their relationship only for one of them to spout some fortune cookie philosophy the writers mistook for depth that somehow makes everything okay.
@Nehla SOUAKER yeah except no gay bsf and no getting back together afterwards...
so basically gossip girl
#1 Nobody would describe Dean as smart or sensitive.
#2 That windy Oprah part cracked me up.
I still watch Gilmore girls to This day and I wasn’t even born then ughh I wish I was a teen in the early 2000s
honestly mood
swiftie 07 swift swiftie? Taylor is coming bitch!!!
I wish I was alive in the 90s. I mean, friends, celebrating an entirely new millennium, Lisa Frank, no irrational SJWs. It’s the greatest era basically. Also, none of this Brexit and Trump bullshit.
No...no you don't.
Joel Pearce why? Please tell me I was born in 2006
Fun fact: Sookie was originally meant to be lesbian, but the producer or network or something said that people weren’t ready for a major character to be gay in television.
As much as I love her with Jackson, that would’ve been so fun
Honestly you should probably watch a couple more episodes. The pilot episode of Gilmore Girls is a bit rough and I'm saying this as a fan.
Agreed.... Didn't start liking it til the second half of season 1... After that I was hooked...
very true imo the first few episodes aren't very good
Jackson ikr
Yeah the pilot was a bit boring
Ya the first episode is kinda blah but once Tristan comes along it gets interesting
