Sookie is the most balanced character in the show. She’s genuinely happy and passionate about her career. She has the healthiest and most stable romantic relationship in the show. She’s a good friend with good judgment. Team Sookie!
true except when they gave her&jackson that weird vasectomy arch when she forced him to get one, he chickened out and didnt tell her and got her pregnant again 🤡 that was so unnecessary and out of character
@@nostradamus1162 that one was out of character because Melissa McCarthy got pregnant in real life but they already had done the vasectomy story line so they had to back track 😂 also ASP was no longer writing for that season so there was a long out of character in that season.
The thing is though, they always had PILES of food but only ever took one bite of pizza or 2 licks of ice cream and then discarded it. Most of the time when they ate out, they'd order and as soon as their food arrived they'd have to leave without even touching it. The fast food gorging was a massive illusion, but if you watch how much fast food they actually eat, it was minimal.
It seemed to me like the characters liked having a lot of choices in front of them- multiple types of candy or take-out food. But it never seemed like they were bingeing on it. They also always had leftovers in their fridge.
That’s true. It’s actually the way people like them behave in real life. They barely touch food and almost never finish all the dishes. They just don’t limit their food choices, eat a little bit of everything and people consider it “eating a lot without getting fat” 🙄
Also- I don’t want to offend anyone because I know “skinny” is relative- but they don’t look “super skinny” to me. They look to be at average, healthy weights throughout the seasons. Not overweight at all, but they certainly don’t appear underfed or undernourished or as though they’re being super restrictive with calories.
100% I rewatched it some month ago. Very often they ordered something and didn‘t eat anything… maybe one frie (but only a bite ) or one leaf of a salat.
I think the use of junk food in the show also helps show how Lorelei and Rory are more sisterly than mother and daughter. Lorelei had Rory when she was a teen and because of that, she eats like one. Rory eats that way because that's how she was raised. I don't want to sound insensitive but I wouldn't be surprised if Lorelei had an eating disorder, she was raised in a strict environment so her trying to gain control through food makes sense. She constantly drinks coffee as a main source of energy and while people around her say she eats a lot she could be binging. She's most likely in a binge/ restrict cycle a lot of the time, between having to raise a child by herself, maintain a job and stay active in her social life she doesn't have much time to eat by herself. Because of this, she's fully reliant on takeout and restaurant visits and ends up eating a majority of her calories around friends and family. There's a really strong tie between food and socializing in the show, there are barely any scenes of her eating by herself and when she is it's stuff like the bag of lettuce with dressing. Lorelei's relationship with food is really interesting because of this, it's one of the things that makes her seem not fully "adult". Cooking a proper meal for yourself and your family multiple times a day on a regular basis is one of those things that make people seem more "grown-up", Lorelei's dependency on fast food shows that even though she's in her 30s she's still enough like a teenager to be on the same level as Rory. EDIT: There's a lot of comments along the lines of "that wasn't intended by the writers" and "the show isn't about that". I'm not saying that Lorelei does or does not have an eating disorder or was written to have one, I'm just reading into her actions for fun! Sometimes the curtains are just blue, but isn't it fun to see if there's an extra layer of meaning? The beauty of stories is personal interpretation, if you don't agree with mine that's great! if you do that's also great!
This ist such a good comment. I never saw it like that. I grew up watching Gilmore Girls and it is still my favourite show. I waned to add that food can be a tool to represent a social background. Although Lorelai came frome an incredibly wealthy backgorund with maids and cooks, she moved out with the age of 16 probably never learned to cook for herself or her daughter. So fastfood was the only and a convenient way to provide for Rory as a single, working and teenage mom, which later is cultivaded in the series
@@tikusblue Lorelei always read to me as having ADHD, not being affected by large amounts of caffeine and forgetting to eat out of hyperfocus/fixation is common with people who have ADHD.
they would order fast food like it was water, never eat it, talk about their magical metabolism, and then fatshame people. absolutely 100% my least favourite part of the show
Yeah I just started the show a month ago and was so confused how normalized the fatphobia from Rory and lorelai was?! Like were the writers insecure so they made Rory and lorelai insecure and decided to take it out on big people or what? Definitely one of the worst parts of the show, especially cause I found it happening a lot in seasons 3-4😒
I think the food acting makes the “quirkiness” of them loving food more realistic… throughout high school and college I’ve met tons and tons of girls who claim to love food and “eat so much” , but when I’d watch them eat they would take a few bites of the junk food. I remember this distinctly in high school- I was a size 10 and was the biggest one out of all of the girls I knew. We had a sleepover where all the girls were SO excited to “eat junk food” all night. Night of the sleepover came and a few of them had ONE Oreo each. I think it’s this complex with young women to make themselves sound like they eat a ton and they’re unhealthy to make you notice how skinny they are and wonder, but it’s not true.
True true. Noticed this in slim friends of mine too. When a skinny person says that they “eat a lot of food but never get fat”, it’s because they don’t actually eat a lot. It’s cause they eat so little of everything, but somehow in their minds, they assume it to be of big proportion.
I noticed that when skinny people say they 'eat a lot' they don't intend to purposefully mislead you. I put on quite a lot of weight at 16 and ballooned from 50 KG to 86 KG at my heaviest. One of friend would eat a lot but always remain skinny. It wasn't until I slept over at her place for 3 weeks that I realised she only eats a lot about once daily. She'd have a heavy meal at around 2 PM and that would be it. But I would have 3 heavy meals and question why I wasn't as small as she was lol. I'd also complain about how I eat less than most people I know yet weighed almost twice as much as they did. Which I later found to be untrue because when I started paying attention to my diet, I realised that I was eating close to 3K calories daily.
TW: eating disorder (in the "Skins" TV show) This reminded me of that scene when Cassie "teaches" Sid how she plays around with her food so it seems like she eats, but in reality she doesn't, and Sid gets to understand her a bit more
I think part of this stems from the way women are taught to think ab food, diet culture teaches us that Oreos are “bad”and that women should eat small portions, so girls will eat one and be like “omg I eat so much junk food!”
I also feel like it’s worth considering that they’re supposed to be struggling for money and saving up for things like Lorelai and Sookie’s new inn and Rory’s college, yet they’re constantly eating out, which is quite expensive over time… It’s also an interesting issue when thinking about Rory’s younger years when Lorelai would have simultaneously been struggling to learn to manage a household (cook and budget) on her own while also learning to live without her family’s wealth.
@@justsabria7540 But that wasn’t the plan. In fact, it was exactly the opposite of the plan. Lorelai went to her parents to pay for Chilton because it was an unexpected success and Rory went to her grandparents (behind Lorelai’s back) when she unexpectedly didn’t get any financial aid for Yale. When they developed their habits of buying pre made food, ordering in, and eating out all of the time, Lorelai was actively avoiding using her parents help (financial or otherwise) for anything.
I thought in some parts of the US it’s cheaper (or easier to have the relatively smaller amount on hand) to buy fast food and per packaged stuff rather than shop for fresh groceries that go bad much more quickly.
@@malinasworld Generally, it can be cheaper to eat fast food than buying lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat. However, it is more expensive to eat out or buy prepared food (think a frozen meal that only requires heating up) than it is to buy ingredients (like pasta or canned sauces/veggies) and then combine/prepare them yourself. For example, you buying eggs, cheese, and butter and making your own omelette in the morning is going to be cheaper than going to a diner and buying eggs at a price that includes the diner’s operating costs (rent, labor, etc) and a profit margin. Or with coffee, it’s cheaper to buy coffee beans and milk and make your own coffee than to buy coffee from a diner that has to include those same ingredients, operating costs, and a profit margin in their price.
It's realistic to a single parent household where time spent cooking = time not working. Sure making my pasta sauce is cheaper, but the canned stuff isn't that much more expensive (esp in the early aughts) and I don't have to cook after working all day. additionally, i think a bit of this is related to lorelai's background. She didn't grow up cooking, and as far as we see, she never learned how. Learning takes time and a kitchen, two things we know 16yo lorelai didn't really have.
It´s also evident that Rory views others as ¨below¨ her and I think this is because of her being told shes ¨special¨ her whole life by adults so she´s grown up automatically thinking she is better/above others.
I think Rory is really insecure. She NEEDS to feel special/the best/effortlessly cool and feels as though if other people are better than her in any way shape or form, it is a personal affront to her. I’m an insecure person who was an honor student in high school etc. much like Rory and I do feel happy for other people but it’s an everyday process of reminding myself that the success of others is not my loss. I think it’s a common thing for teenagers but for Rory it is really at an unhealthy level.
Absolutely, which is why I think the year in the life miniseries was everything we needed. I feel like it's the cathartic (for us) ending deserved by someone who thinks the sun shines out of their ass with zero achievement to back it up. We would hope she would have grown out of it by that age but we never got the presentation of Rory's attitude to life and other people as bad in the main series.
@@chloedsmith i agree, though i was shocked by what a depressing turn the golden girl’s life seemed to have taken😂 i had stopped liking her character ages ago (too self-centered), so I think she deserved it. I was just surprised the show actually took it there.
Also the fact that there never seems to be other stereotypically "beautiful" women in that town. So no wonder Lorelai was seen as this gorgeous Unicorn. Cause there was never any competition. The lengths this show went to to make sure that we always saw Lorelai and Rory as the prettiest in town.
I disagree. Lane, Rachel, Anna, Sherry (I know she wasn’t in town but she was in their lives.. kind lol), all of Rory’s female friends were (in my opinion) stereotypically beautiful too. Bobby (1 of Logan’s colleagues) was like super model pretty. Lulu was pretty too. And Lindsay too. Lorelai and Rory were just some of the only ones with icy blue eyes and baby bottom skin 😂
I mean my weight has always been up and down, but I’ve never been overweight and always under 140 for most of my life, and ate whatever I wanted and still managed to stay a size 4/6 so it’s possible, depending on what people said portion size and how active you are. I think people take their eating habits way to seriously when we have to remember it’s a tv show and the actress themselves even admitted to dieting to stay how they were.
@@ambercooper4676 my weight has always been up and down and I was often overweight by the scales even though I ate very little and exercised a great deal. For example, I swim a mile a day and bike 12 miles a day while eating an 800-1000 low carb/high protein/high fiber plant based diet,Nd yet am considered obese by my BMI and XXL by my clothes size. So it’s more than portion size and activity level.
I remember watching this as a teenager and being flabbergasted by how much unhealthy food they seemed to eat while still being so slim. Granted, some people have an unbelievable metabolism, but Rory's and Lorelai's eating habits and even some personality traits were considered as quirky by most of the other characters and not as potentially dangerous. The show still holds a very special place in my heart, but willing suspension of disbelief is just impossible as a 30-something adult. Thank you for taking time to talk about this!
You are so right! This was my favorite show in middle school when it was airing but watching now at 28 its just way too unrealistic for me. I made it through season 1 and half of season 2 in my rewatch before it just began to feel like a chore. Don't get me wrong the cozy vibes and nostalgia was there but the show feels like its unrealistic to the point of being a parody. Maybe I have become jaded and my imagination is not as good😂. The food is one major thing- you can clearly tell the actresses (especially Lauren) work out and eat an appropriate calorie amount. Even if you are one of those superfreaks with a turbo metabolism, you literally cannot eat that high-fat, high-carb and high-sodium diet and look like they do, in the lowest body fat percentage category possible. Unless you are an athlete and burning it all off in intense aerobic exercise which clearly they are not depicted as. But aside from that you only ever see them eating out all their meals from Luke's or restaurants to the point they don't even know how to use their own oven. Yet at the same time Lorelai is a financially struggling single mom. Like maybe if you cut down your monthly food budget you could have afforded Rory's Chilton tuition all by yourself (jk). These are just minor irritations but just the dialogue, while witty, its like NOBODY TALKS LIKE THIS. Nobody is witty and making pop culture quips 24/7 even in emotionally charged scenes 😩.
I agree! I just turned 30 recently and while I still love how cosy Stars Hollow is and the overall atmosphere I can see their flaws so much more clearly. Especially with how Rory approaches education and job opportunities (i.e. not well and entitled) plus Lorelai’s running out on her wedding to Max. I now have experiences of both over the last 10+ years and can say there are better ways to deal with these than they do on the show. But at least other characters point out their self involvement/denial. My favourites are Luke, Emily and Lane for sure. Flawed but balanced and overall good-hearted people!
Considered quirky ??? Luke said over and over again how eating like that can kill you, Dean was overwhelmed by the amount of food that they ate and Emily made several remarks about it. Nobody in the show agreed with their eating habits
@@PatriciaSmyleI agree to disagree. Yes, Luke and Emily were the most vocal about their eating habits and some life choices, and Dean did make some comments especially during movie nights. However, I wouldn't say nobody agreed with the way they ate either.
Even someone with a very high metabolism would only burn an extra 200-400 Calories a day, which equates to only one small bag of Doritos, or like half of a meal from a restaurant. They eat wayyyy more than that on the show
So good! The contrast between what Lorelei eats and Lauren being on a diet since 11 is heartbreaking. I’m curious about the science behind how much fast and slow metabolisms are a ‘thing’ and can affect your weight!
it’s sad to think that the actress herself clearly is a little obsessive of diets and being healthy and having her character also be obsessed with food must have been so hard to not constantly think about food (especially junk food)
I did a reverse diet, I managed to be able to eat 2,800 calories and only gained 5lbs but was also heavily weight lifting. It did get my metabolism to work better so to say, most people have spent so much of their time yo yo dieting that they think they have a slow metabolism when in reality their body has just adapted to the few calories they eat through these diets. Taking about a solid 1 year diet break and fueling my body did amazing things for me
Yeah well fast and slow metabolism Isn’t really a thing it’s more pop science (correct me if I’m wrong), however when everyone says people have a different motabolism the only factors are height, muscle mass, sex and age (might’ve missed one) so if someone is the same sex the same age and around the same height as you then they don’t have a higher or slower metabolism than you at al. The only reason someone’s metabolism might be slower is if you are skinny and or have stopped eating for a long time and you’ve enterned starvation mode. And yes I said that right skinny people have a slower motabolism than bigger people, that’s why if a “fat” person and a skinny person go on the same diet ad exercise just as much then obviously the fat person will loose weight significantly faster
@@desteny1393 so factually incorrect, metabolism varies for people of the same age, height and weight dependent on activity levels. If someone the same age height and weight as me does (for example) 4+ sports a week and I sit on my sofa all week, then their metabolism will be much higher than mine as their body is burning more ATP in order to provide energy to their muscles and digestive system. They will eat more food and metabolise faster, giving them a faster metabolism.
I love Melissa and I just finished GG for the first time. I am very happy that her weight was never ever a story point. Her body was never commented on and there was never a plot where she would want to lose weight or anything like that. I love how we saw the gorgeous beautiful Sookie through the prism of her being great friend, loving and positive person, amazing cook and my favourite character in the show.
I always assumed Rory and Lorelei both ate basically nothing most of the day and then binged at certain times, usually around people. It's unhealthy but it's also something some people genuinely do. It's easy to eat a 1200 calorie meal and stay thin if you don't eat the rest of the day
For the record this is not a healthy eating pattern and may be indicative of an eating disorder. If you do this, especially if you do all of your eating around others so they don't see how little you eat, please seek the help of a mental health provider
fun fact: they speak very fast bc the writer and creator of the show always wrote a lot of dialogue she wanted her characters to say but there's only so much time in a show, so they spoke faster to be able to fit everything
i would argue that lorelai and rory can only be friends with girls who they think are less beautiful than they are, or have less social power than they do (sookie, an overweight woman, lane, an asian american girl with a strict mother, or paris a girl who's very insecure about her looks and has fewer social skills) because they don't view them as a threat, they are nice to them because they think of themselves as above them, even if they don't overtly say it. Every time a new character enters that rivals them in brains, beauty and social skills or possess some talent or skill that they don't have (luke's girlfriend rachel in season 1, or Lucy and olivia from season 7) they are an immediate threat to the girls social status and they cannot establish a good relationship with them no matter how hard they try, which either leads to jealousy, rivalry, or judgement of appearence or actions because the show requires them to be the most desirable women in any setting. rachel is an immediate threat to lorelai and lukes relationship AND highlights how much luke is in love with lorelai because of how similar they are in looks. Lucy is revealed to be dating Marty who was into rory, but even though rory rejected him, she cannot fathom him getting over her AND THE SHOW DOESN"T EITHER BECAUSE HE'S STILL IN LOVE WITH HER. They can be happy for their friends successes in finding love because they don't see those successes as a detriment to their social status. As much as this show made strides in representation for different kinds of women being loved, it's impossible to ignore how rory and lorelai treat the women around them as only existing for their benefit.
Don’t agree, they only see rivals to woman who love their crushes. Not because they are ubove them. I just can’t help point out your comment support the notion that girls easily get jealous of other girls which ruins thier relationship. Girls support and love girls. And in Gilmore Girls they only hate anyone stealing thier crushes/boyfriends, and not just by Existing
@@magpiecritic3083 The problem with your statement is that we never actually see them interact with other women who rival them in physical beauty and popularity. The few times we did, was when a woman was interested in their man. So we don't actually know if they'd be honest wonderful friends to other women who look like and are beloved like them. Actually there was one woman that kind of proves the previous comment's point. Bobby or Bobbi. The woman that Logan worked with. Rory hated her just for being a beautiful woman who worked with Logan. I made a similar comment... that we never see any other women who rival them. So no matter what, they'd always be the prettiest and most popular in that town. It's really disappointing.
Something that occured to me recently is that Luke is constantly portrayed as a stick-in-the-mud and a killjoy because he eats healthily and tries to get the Gilmores to do the same, but no-one ever considers that it's likely coming from a place of fear. Both of Luke's parents died young, and he clearly has a lot of unresolved trauma because of that, as we see from things like his aversion to hospitals and his 'dark day'. So his obsession with being healthy could very well be his way of trying to take control in a way he couldn't when his parents died, and trying to prevent himself and the two people he cares about most from suffering the same health problems and early death that his parents faced. But as far as I can remember, nothing like that is ever explored on the show. Maybe I'm just thinking too deeply about something that was probably meant to be meaningless (and thereby doing exactly what ASP doesn't want viewers to do), but I just feel like this could have been a good opportunity to further explore and develop Luke's character, and instead it was just left as more fuel for the show's 'healthy people are so annoying' jokes.
yeah as much as i don't like luke it's concerning that lorelai's coffee addiction is played for laughs. overconsumption of caffeine is known to cause GI and heart problems in the long term, luke was right to call her out on it. i say this as someone trying to cut back from my usual one coffee and 1-2 energy drinks a day (it's gonna be harder to stay off monster when school starts though haha). five cups of coffee? my stomach hurts just thinking about it.
Luke was ate healthily and Lorelai didn't because they needed these two characters to banter in a flirty manner. To make Luke seem responsible and fatherly and Lorelai childish and mischievous.
I never watched Gilmore girls (I was too young at the time), but I did watch iCarly as a kid. There’s a character Sam who eats a lot but is always beautiful and skinny, and I was trying to figure out how to be like her in real life. Later the actress said that it was damaging to her to be portrayed as a huge eater on TV while she basically had an eating disorder in real life to keep her figure. This “skinny girl eats a lot consistently” does seem to be bad overall
@@JessicaVianaa Omg. Senpai noticed me 🤗 can I just say, your videos are so interesting and informative and you are kind of a goddess. Thank you so much for all the informative, entertaining and highly niche videos I am all about. You are totes cool.
Well I agree on one hand and on the other I don't. She personally has a great relationship with food, she eats vegetables and fruits, which the gg seem to repulse. On the other hand she shames Michele for dieting and constantly adds food to his meals, he doesn't want. Even with him being a (needy) asshole, that's disrespectful. Plain and simple. If you can't "cook" An egg without the tons of feta and cheese you're going to add, you're not a good cook. My partner can cook with the simplest ingredients and it is mouth watering. He doesn't have to add tons of bacon.
I used to eat whatever i wanted candy for meals, fast food, coffee, and junk food. I was skinny and looked fit. Around 19, i started being larthargic. Greezy, sugary, and extremely processed food made me sick/ throw up. It messed up my stomach. Had to learn nutrition and have a healthy relationship with food. Even now, i can' t eat at most fast food and still have stomach problems.
I can relate. I unfortunately spent too long taking the advice of the older generations and eating pretty much 2 servings of ramen every day. Severe stomach issues after about a year of sticking to this “diet” I hope you are enjoying learning to do things differently- it has been a journey. What ultimately helped here is just being in a relationship where I’m not constantly living on as little as possible
I'm so glad you mentioned they never eat their food, it always bothered me they'd go to Luke's so often (which must have been expensive) and then never eat any of the food and leave it all on the table
They said that because of the many shots it might took to shoot a scene the food went bad so it was like a prop also it was for consistency issues during the scene
Honestly though that's just kinda the way the film industry works. Like, if people were to actually eat the food, you'd generate more waste because you'd have to, say, order one plate of food per take, and if you have to do 5 takes...
even though they need the food to stay the same for visual continuity, they could always have plates of food that have been “eaten” when they’re leaving the restaurant instead of having them be served and suddenly leaving
As a young woman who used to have a Magic Rory Metabolism when I was a teen, but now in my 20s am filling out rapidly, this video is really helping me to adjust my mindset. Thank you Jessica!!!
This has always been a thing tho. Skinny people, specifically skinny girls, are made "relatable" for eating a lot. This is what Jennifer Lawrence banked on in that weird 2010 timeline when she was a relatable girl despite literally looking like every Hollywood leading woman and winning multippe awards, because she likes pizza apparently. Even Frozen did this, with the weird emphasis on Elsa and Anna liking ~~chocolates~~! Only skinny people are allowed to ear and enjoy food. If you are a fat person eating, you have comitted an unforgivable crime.
This was such a "youtube girl thing. All the morning routines and after school routines and x facts about me videos. The girls would act like their favorite activity is eating and all they want to do is eat. But you could tell from their portion sizes that they're not big eaters at all It felt like they wanted to act fat (because fat people are known for being funny and having more entertaining personalities because they didn't get validation through their looks growing up) While meeting the standards of being skinny.
The Jennifer Lawrence food quirk was ✨ emotional damage ✨ for thirteen year olds in the early 2000s. 😅 Like Jennifer is still very thin but was obviously muscular and strong in The Hunger Games movies. I didn’t realize she was working really diligently with a personal trainer and probably prioritizing protein/healthy foods while allowing some pizza and desserts in her diet. Dumb impressionable me just saw her talk about how practically all she ate was junk food. 😂 I was like “how does she eat like that and talk like that?”
one thing that's always confused me is that in the Kim family make what I'd call white people vegetarian food. like it's not like Korean cooking is lacking in health conscious vegetarian dishes. it seems super odd to take something like tofu and make tofurkey when you could just make a normal tofu dish.
So my parents immigrated from a Latin American country and when we moved to a predominantly non-Hispanic white neighborhood what we cooked did sort of change to be more white American. Not that I think ASP put in thought into it but sometimes that happens to fit in and does seem the Kim family was one of the very few families of a different race in Stars Hallow.
@@cristinwithac “weird food habits”. We literally just don’t eat certain meats like pork & most seafood. There is plenty of room for cultural food for ethnic SDAs. This is just apart of the white writers not preparing for accurate representation of POCs.They also casted Japanese actors to play Koreans….
Re: the Die Jerk episode. Rory absolutely faces consequences for writing that terrible article about the ballerina. The ballerina confronts her face to face in Yale's dining hall and humiliates her in front of everyone by saying she's a terrible person for what she wrote. It's one of the few times (outside of Rory being punished for stealing that boat with Logan) that she has to face consequences for her hurtful actions.
i’m only on season 3 but when dean dumped her for the second time in front of everyone because of jess i was literally celebrating. she deserved that so badly. she was so shitty to dean and cheated on him both physically and emotionally. she never ever faces consequences for her actions and it pissed me off so badly. she acts so naive and innocent when in reality she’s very manipulative!
Yeah but she never faced consequences from the school for actually publishing that and everyone else praised her for her article so she didn’t face any “real” consequences
@@calvoekleiden8664 Pretty sure the school wanted her to be more edgy in her columns which is why it was published. The whole episode was about Rory going against her usual nice self and seeing that being a journalist isn’t always easy.
@@RaniaBhatti Why some people are so bitter? Relax! Not everything is black or white, many people come in all shades and percentages of grey. I will put them in league of people who hate on Alia Bhatt and Justin Beiber, only because they had it easy. Would you ever like to be on receiving end of people like yourself?
I think the scenes of the grandparents enjoying junk food isn't just about advertising, it's supposed to also represent them actively engaging in and enjoying the girls way of life and accepting that they aren't right about everything
Honestly I think Lorelai’s relationship with food is due to her having to be an adult when she was 16, she’s a very immature person in general because of that. If you think about, her way of eating is like how a kid would like to eat if it was let unsupervised. Think about it, she was out of a house where she probably never entered the kitchen and then goes out to the world to try and raise a child so she’d make ready made meals for her and the kid to eat.
I read a blog post about this and I’m so glad someone made a video about it. There’s two things wrong with how food is handled on Gilmore Girls- 1. Enjoying food is seen as a quirk for women and not something normal, unlike men 2. it’s only ok to enjoy food as a woman if you’re skinny I’m sure there’s more
Omg I was just thinking about how interesting it would be for u to explore the gilmore girls diet bc their eating habits were insaneee/borderline deadly with the caffeine consumption and absence of nutrients and all 🤣😭😭
This was big in the 2000s, being quirky, smart, ‘not like other girls’ and would choose a burger over a rice cake. This is how guys would find you interesting.
I have a theory that their food acting was seriously limited by the style of filming favored in the series. For them to use spit buckets there would have to be frequent cuts, but the show is known for staying in wide shots for as long as possible. Cutting so frequently would make the film choppy to the directors and have much more of an impact (for them) than seeing the actors actually eat. Just a guess.
Filming a scene takes a lot of time -hours and hours for a few minutes of what is actually shown in a movie or show. Which is why actors mostly don't eat in scenes or-if they do-they have hidden buckets where they spit out the food after a take is done. According to MBB eating scenes in stranger things take up to 12 hours to film. Nobody could eat waffles for 12 hours straight
I have seen an acting class where playing with food instead of eating it was encouraged. Might be a specific acting style that is popular. In the past I have read many novels and noticed, that the slim heroines either lacked appetite, since they never finished their meals or were appalled by them due to being too sad/upset to eat. In other novels they ate junk like the Gilmore Girls without gaining weight. I wonder if the authors of such novels and tv shows project their own fantasies on the characters about either lacking appetite or having an overactive metabolism and thus being able to stay slim without effort.
As a person that has been overweight for most of her life, how the appearance of people outside of the Gilmore Girls circle becomes fair game (as you you described it) really stings. Because it's such a real experience that makes you doubt people you think are friends of yours. People that I have been friends with either talked negatively about others bodies or told me how they are so afraid to become overweight, how their rolls are ugly, etc etc. It screwed a bit with my trust in others and wether I would want to open up to them. :/
The Gilmore girls are fictional but the “regular degular super thin girl who just LOVES to gorge on junk food” thing was incredibly common among celebs at this point too
Reminds me of some girls with EDs that I used to know who would make a big fuss of eating around people and buying a lot of food, but only actually eating a tiny bit of it, and always being too busy to finish it.
And drinking lots of coffee because that can get you over to he next splurge My theory is that lorelai has a very disordered way with food, which makes sense given her childhood. That and her perception as the cool unaffected badass was the only thing she could control. But she yearns her parents affection all through the series and they ping pong her around It's never safe. Places like lukes or sookies kitchen are. Maybe that's where the addiction to food and fast food came from.. originally just to be loved.
This makes me sad because this was me. I had an eating disorder and going out to eat with friends made me so anxious and it would put me in the worst mood and I’d panic if I had to go out to eat. I’m at a place where I can go out to eat now but I just feel like trash about it later. It’s a struggle 😭 I hate the way this show portrays their relationship with food and I’m glad it’s being addressed
Read this hit me so bad. That was exactelly what I used to do. It's also a mechanism of hide the eating disorder from the others. Remembering to someone that's read this, it's always time to ask for help. Food is not your enemy
I always sort of told myself that the characters were written as thinking that they ate more than they actually did. Like, I thought that it seemed like they skipped a lot of meals or ate a bite here and there and then would binge like, twice/week, giving off the impression of eating a ton without actually consistently doing that. That’s unrealistic, yes, but that explanation made it easier for me to watch the show and keep up my suspension of disbelief
I knew a lot of “cool girls” in high school who ate like this. I had one friend call herself a member of the “FFA: Future Fatties of America,” because her diet was “so bad” but she couldn’t be bothered like “other girls” to diet. But if you paid attention her calorie intake (and other girls who are like this) WAS restricted. She would have a bag of chips and a Diet Pepsi at lunch, that she went on about, but that was her whole meal. Maybe 200 calories. And if you had pizza with her, she’d be one slice, and maybe not even finish the whole slice.
the one thing that I think was ""better"" (barely) about previous body standards is that they were usually naturally possible. what I mean is that you take these skinny women - they were expected to be skinny everywhere. or a more curvy woman of decades prior, a Marilyn Monroe for instance, she wasn't exactly expected to have abs. a little fat was "acceptable". being like them took a lot of suffering and was unhealthy, but it was at least doable in a few cases. these days, a woman is supposed to be *both* skinny enough that she has a really flat stomach, while also having the body fat necessary to sustain large breasts and ass. it is quite literally impossible without surgery, and that's a scary thing
THIS. I feel like the standards are getting increasingly more impossible. Like not only do I have to control my size, I have to control if I have abs, how toned I am, how muscular I am but not too muscular, have curves and fat in all the “right” places. It’s really impossible even with super strict dieting and exercise and a personal trainer, I’d probably need plastic surgery. Damn I kind of hate body expectations
@@mckenziejeanne4508 for sure 💯 like it's not impossible as in extremely hard to do, it's literally just impossible. I don't think I've ever truly seen a women that's met it without obvious makeup and photoshop and whatever else. Even women that are actually seen as attractive don't seem to make it halfway. Not even those that partially enforce the standereds, such as the Kardashians, can meet it. And if women whose whole careers lands on them being pretty enough to make others insecure can't make it, how are we, the average women supposed too? I feel like a fish being forced to live on land. Not to mention how racism affects things..
And you know, you can definitely be an hourglass shape and naturally have those curves but, when you do look like that naturally, you might get some chub here and there, big thighs, chunky arms. And you're called fat if you do.
@@beasttitanofficial3768 exactly, you can't win. I've always been "petite", in both height and size, and as a latina, that's not the beauty standard at all. it used to make me feel so insecure as a teen, but I've realized my body is forever, and these standards are not. it's exausting and useless to chase them, but it still hurts from time to time, cause no one lets you forget all the ways you don't "fit in", no matter what side of the spectrum you fall on
I loved Gilmore Girls growing up, but I agree with pretty much every comment being made on this video: Lorelei and Rory actually being quite vain while making fun of other supposedly more vain women who do work out and pay attention to their appearance, countless times when Lorelei is straight up dismissive of Suki and a terrible friend (the same is true of Rory and her friendship with Lane), and setting themselves apart from everybody because they read more and eat junk food because omg-we're-so-quirky. As I get older I see how terrible and neglectful it is to raise a kid on pizzas and diner food and teach her a false sense of entitlement. Which by the way, is entirely possible thanks to your grandparents wealth (and while we're on it, wanting one family dinner a week in return for paying your daughter's school AND college fees is not unreasonable, Lorelei Gilmore!!!)
I haven’t finished watching the video but I’m so happy that someone finally made a video on this! I used to love Gilmore girls but the older I got the more I saw these big red flags from the show. The food thing was especially off putting for me because it almost felt like the writers were fetishizing the idea of these two girls having a diet that would be consider appalling for someone who isn’t as skinny as them. The constant mention of this is so weird.
Back in 2000 when Gilmore Girls was on there was no such thing as a pick me girl. In fact, at the time it was cool to be blonde. It was also common to overly stereotype girls to be popular pretty blonde, smart dorky brunette, and promiscuous red head. Most mother figures were wholesale wearing mom jeans types or unreliable drunk single moms. It wasn’t until Dawson’s creek that there was truly a teen drama. The only others were saved by the bell and 90210. Two vastly different vibes with very unrealistic storylines. GG was one of the first shows to become popular that blurred a lot those lines. A lot complaints of being a pick me girl stem from movies and shows in the early aughts trying to break previous girl stereotypes resulting in the not like other girls trope. It’s taboo now but that’s a result of a lot of hard work of trying to show girls they can like sports and be smart and pretty too. The movies She’s the man and Sydney white are prime examples of this idea. Both well loved amongst younger millennials but also a result of over representing women FOR DECADES as shallow self absorbed beauty and boyfriend obsessed girls. I feel like people forget pick me and girl boss are results of trying to get women a seat at the table in media. No one ever complains about male characters in this way which is the point.
Brad Pitt's signature food acting is my favourite 😘 If the Gilmore Girls ate all they claimed to eat & all that they ordered, adult Rory could solve her employment problem by becoming a Mukbang star
Both Lorelei and Rory are narcissists (yes, you're right, they're fat shaming people in the revival!) who like to appear as better, more gifted than others. That's why there are so many references to how much they eat without them exercising or doing nothing to maintain their figures. They put people down and make fun of those who struggle to stay in shape (S1-7) but it's very much veiled in the 'quirky girl' trope. Oh, and thanks about pointing out that Rory did her make up before the sorority girls came to pick her up during the night. She wanted to appear better than Paris (who was supposedly her friend) so she lied about it. I often joke about the fact that I love the Gilmore girls but I'd never wanna hang out with them in real life. Lol. :)
Thanks for the comment - as the seasons went on, even up to the revival I grew to love and relate with Paris more and more as a character - I felt sad that she always saw herself in Rory's shadow too
Thissss. I loved them when I was young, and I still love the show. But God they are insufferable, especially Rory. And even though most times during seasons 1-6 they don't face any consequences, Rory does on the revival and it felt amazing lol
One thing I can't stand about Rory is that she's SUPER homophobic! Any time she sees someone who she even thinks is a lesbian, she says something homophobic. She actually acts disgusted by gay people. It's jarring but I just laugh at her and enjoy the show anyway!! Lol.
Rory didn't put on makeup to look better than Paris when the sorority girls came to pick her up. Before the sorority girls show up to 'unexpectedly' take her; Lorelia told Rory that the Puffs called her and told her that they were taking Rory for the night. The person who was really in the wrong here for not telling Paris about maybe putting on some makeup or looking presentable is Paris's mom. Paris made a point to talk about how she came from a long line of Puffs. If her family have come from a long line of Puffs and this middle of the night kidnapping thing is a 'tradition'; then wouldn't it be more logical to assume that a family from Paris's family would've told her instead of someone who she hasn't been exactly nice to and didn't even want to be a Puff in the first place?
@@midnightreindeer936 the point is Paris, felt insecure as she compared herself to Rory. Paris is smart though, she asked a logical question “is this what you really look like when you first wake up?” Rory could have told the truth, or just been coy and made a joke like “of course my lips naturally have glitter on them.” Paris would have understood Yet Rory didn’t. She lied for no reason, and that’s messed up. She didn’t care how bad Paris felt, even reveled in as she pretended she was just so effortlessly beautiful.
I’ve watched Gilmore girls once a year since I was 12 and honestly it always baffles me that the girls look so beautiful. I used to be incredibly jealous of Rory, having boys literally fight over her because of her smart, quirky ways. The men in the show always seemed to have a fetish for them and their behaviours. It’s made me go absolutely mental about diets, validation from men and being ‘perfect.
Pretty sure the whole point of their magical diet is the fact that it's a fantasy we as viewers crave and it is being lived out through these characters. It's a joke in itself that they eat like shit and still continue to look perfect.
I agree but this commentary was great because it shows how the fantasy that’s a form of escapism also caused damage to a young audience. I was in middle school and didn’t exactly understand that it was a complete fantasy.
I wonder if part of the reason it was damaging to some demographics was because they shattered the illusion in the later seasons. They alluded to the girls eventually experiencing consequences for how they've lived their lives. It gives an element of true realism. But having some crumb of reality just cements the fact that they "still ate like that for years didn't have any consequences" In my opinion, they should have just never done it. Leave them as the cartoonish trope of eating everything but the kitchen sink. Leave fiction as fiction, not everything has to be meta.
they eat light breakfast, no lunch, large dinner. Lorelai walks to work and stands for her job moving at all times and forgets to eat (canon). rory goes to school and studies and also forgets to eat most likely. they dont keep much if any real food at the house. so they have to walk to go eat anything they consume and walk home most times if its not snowing most likely daily. they have a spin of Mediterranean keto but with no food restriction. its a diet that actually works well. but i think lorelai binges sometimes and drinks black coffee for most of the time and runs off sugar + caffeine. it always gave undiagnosed adhd to me
I feel like sometimes they use food instead of alcohol, saying things like "last night is a blur" or "eat till we get sick" and connect fun moments with food.
Ah, the double standard of getting weird looks and feeling guilty for eating in public if you’re fat but praised for doing the same thing if you’re thin. When I was overweight, I wouldn’t eat anything but plain almonds in front of my friends at school cause I feared they would think something along the lines of “oh, that’s why she’s fat” 🫠. Then I went home and binged cause I hadn’t eaten all day 😳. Thank god I’ve stopped giving a fuck cause it’s nobody else’s business 🥳
Almonds are fantastic tbh. But yeah, as a fellow larger individual, I say you deserve to eat substantial meals in front of people and not have anyone give you grief for it.
Yes and surprisingly skinny people don’t get praised for eating in public. We get body shamed for eating small portion snacks or fruits/vegetables. If you think skinny people don’t experience body shaming you’re dead wrong. My mom is the worst about it.
Ooh I did the same thing. In middle school I wouldn’t eat anything for breakfast or lunch. One time, I came home starving and ate 9 pieces of cheese. My mom counted out the pieces of cheese I ate and would tell family and friends all about how much cheese I ate! No one knew I wasn’t eating at school. I don’t care anymore either, if I’m hungry I eat, I just listen to my body more
Drama student here! It's super weird to hear that her shows don't have a meaning bc one of the first things they teach you as an actor and as a creative mind is that EVERYTHING has a meaning. It doesn't have to be a social meaning, but every aspect of it must be planed to fulfill something, it's not like "Hey, that looks cool, leave it" specially when it's something that's constantly in the show.
You should do a vid on The Devil Wears Prada. HUGE obsession with being skinny, “glow up” culture (with Anne’s character), diet culture (with Emily’s), and how size relates to the fashion industry. 😈👠
I just watched that movie for the first time in 5+ years and I was like…. no wonder I had an unhealthy relationship with my body and food in middle school and high school 🥲
You should do the desperate housewives characters diet bc they’re all so skinny Susan’s is explained by an unnaturally fast metabolism and you saw gabby and Edie exercise but Bree was constantly in the kitchen making baked goods and was only talked about exercising a couple times and Lynette went to one workout class and went jogging like once bc she never had time to exercise
There was one intro in DH S8 about Bree being known for being in “control” and they show a scene where Bree was in a house party and she took a grape instead of the Hors d'oeuvres, and I think that it applies for when she’s cooking as well. Sure she’ll have a few bites but I think she mainly cooks for others (her family and friends or boyfriends) hence the muffin baskets she gives away, and (used to) do it mainly for her catering business and feeding the homeless. But yes! We need a Desperate Housewives video
@@kuntybanks5374 sure but she still only went to Pilates like twice and the amount of wine they all drank would’ve rlly bumped the calories up the only ones who were a normal size were Renee and Katherine
@@madisonpatrick5386 That's because Bree only always drank on an empty stomach, when ur depressed u dont really have the energy to eat anything except drink alcohol or do drugs
This is such an excellent analysis of the show. I grew up watching Gilmore Girls afterschool from middle school onwards, and now it's kind of my "comfort show." As I've grown, however, I see all of the things you mentioned and it's sooo satisfying to have someone break it down so well.
OMG the 'cool girl' trope is something I've never been able to explain before but i'm glad you've pointed it out as a 'thing'. Another character I can think of is Penny from Big Bang Theory. She's meant to be boyish and cool and someone who eats pizza and all the halloween candy at once but ITS CONSTANTLY pushed to the audience how beautiful and skinny she is (even Amy and Bernie ALWAYS mention it). Yet when you see them eat on screen they just kinda push around the food or eat the tomatoes on the salad....
I didn't even think about the food problems, I was too stuck on how judgmental, horrible to friends, and all around awful these characters became through the seasons.
On Food Acting, in the 90's show The Nanny, Fran's mother was notorious for coming over and demanding to be fed. The character was always eating. It got to the point though where her doctor in real life was like, "she's older and gained 30 lbs, she cannot gain anymore weight. give her something else to do" so they did!
They worked it into the show that she was on a diet. So rather than eating, she’d be chasing the food while the other characters tried to keep it from her. It was pretty funny.
Omg yes thank you! I love the series in general but this depiction of food was always bothering me. But I never noticed how bad it actually is. Thank you for talking about this!
Based on the Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, ASP seems to have a thing for writing about white, very beautiful skinny women. I think it was slightly refreshing to see that she commented on how Midge worked so hard to maintain her figure since the beginning of her marriage (- it made sense to do so, since it's set in the 50s) + how her mother would make little digs about stuff like that. It was also refreshing to see Midge let loose (a tiny bit) after she separated from her husband, although it would've been nice to see a bit more of that internal commentary in later seasons
With the fat shaming and other things in the 2016 revival I noticed a lot of the humor along those lines seemed very gratuitous and heavy handed as if Amy Sherman Palladino was really trying to bristle against The change in attitudes and culture around certain issues. There’s fat shaming present, there’s a slightly racist running gag about the housekeeper and still some very touchy queer jokes. Her and her husband seem like they come from that Tina Fey school of political correctness. Like it’s very much “trust me I’m an ally but I’m going to say these awful things about certain groups in a punching down sort of way but you’re just gonna have to trust me that it’s not malicious or hurtful”🙄. Still a big fan of all people mentioned but as a fan it’s kind of an aggravating flaw to put up with in their work. Especially being queer, formerly overweight and from an immigrant family.
You're right about ASP & Tina Fey being similar with their "wink & a punch down" humor. I tried to re-watch the first season of 30 Rock recently and so many jokes are utterly offensive to many groups and those with mental health struggles. It's cringe. I can't believe how differently I view GG and 30 Rock as a grown adult. I see how bitter and problematic they are now.
The 2016 revival was much less funny and to me more offensive than like 95% of the original show even when i go back and rewatch. A good 5% of the original show was making fun of queerness and mental illness and joking about suicide and stuff like that but even as a queer person it skirted the edge of not quite feeling completely offensive. But the fatphobia in the revival was so notable as was the one episode with the ballet dancer journalism plot as a fat viewer myself.
Loved this video! Re: the fatphobia in the show and revival: the fatphobia definitely felt amplified in the revival. I think, as a writer, ASP was (mostly) before her time in the original series for casting Sookie's character and others with more body diversity, as well as not making their bodies a plot point. And of course, the first series had less fatphobic jokes. Unfortunately, I feel like the revival showed ASP doubling down on "not giving a shit" and trying to be controversial. She's a great writer, but sometimes she goes way overboard. Fun fact: Lauren also loves to ride her bike and always bikes to set rather than taking a cart, per her memoir! So although this isn't as intense as her other workouts, it's cool to think that she enjoys low-impact exercise as well.
Thanks for adding that detail, I read her book and she has an entire hilarious chapter where she talks about all the diets and "Hollywood secrets" she's been on and basically how they're all fads and scams lol - she writes exactly like Lorelai speaks which I thought was so funny. I think there's a lot of her in Lorelai's personality
I know I’m a year late but I’m SO glad someone has called this out. This profoundly affected me when I was younger and I actually think it still does - I always feel bad for eschewing junk food, like it’s a bad thing to ‘deprive myself’ and guys will think I’m neurotic, etc. I have to centre myself and remind myself that health is a priority to me. I read a long discussion on it on Reddit a year or two ago but I’m so grateful to find a video talking about it.
Our bodies ALWAYS reflect what we eat, don’t fool yourselves by thinking otherwise. Variations in metabolism don’t cause dramatic weight differences, someone with a very fast metabolism may be able to eat perhaps 100-200 extra calories, but not much more than that. My friends are always telling me they’re jealous of my fast metabolism, because I’m skinny and eat a lot, but the truth is I basically only eat full meals in social situations during weekends. I can easily forget about eating properly for days and then go out with friends and eat a bunch because I’m literally starving, and then go back to not eating for days again. It’s an unhealthy habit that I’m really ashamed of, I don’t even like being this skinny, but it’s the true reason why I don’t gain weight from eating junk food. So, if you see someone skinny that appears to eat a lot like the Gilmore Girls characters, they probably aren’t. Maybe they are exercising a lot too. There’s just no way to overeat calories and stay skinny.
I've often been furious how many movies and TV shows (when given the chance to put some healthy associations in people's heads) make it seem ok to live on junk food, coffee and alcohol. Especially in US shows it seems perfectly fine for teenagers to drink whiskey straight from the bottle, but heavens forfend you might see a breast or hear a swear word. Not to mention the glorification of toxic behaviour. Priorities, people!
I been DREAMING of this video! I am obsessed with Gilmore Girls and this idea has always been troubling to me and I really appreciated having you dive deep into all of it
I wanna add something. Someone eating the same food over and over also can be a part of ADHD. People with Adhd including myself obsess over certain foods for some time (can be months can be years can be days it changes) and eat only them. Other than that I agree with everything you said! Besides not liking this show at all I always thought it was problematic but since everybody loves it I felt like I was the only one.
Thanks for adding the detail regarding ADHD! You’re definitely not alone in that, I received dozens of requests to review this show and apparently there’s been a thread online around the topic since the show came about so I decided to put everything together in one video :) thank you for watching!
Damn, me eating the same kind of yoghurt for breakfast everyday for the past year makes a lot of sense now...it’s not even that good, I just feel the n e e d to eat that. Same with oatmeal for dinner everyday for the past couple months, always made the same way. At this point i memorized the whole recipe and can do it with my eyes closed 😶
i dont have adhd (or at least i never got diagnosed and never had any of the symptoms so idk) but i get fixated on meals too. i've been having oven baked fish and stir fry vegetables for dinner for at least a week now
@@Linda-k5d6d I'm not? She stated reasons for fixating over food I just added another one. Also this conversation was about the actress not the character. :)
I think super high metabolism like people who eat whatever they want in large quantity and never gain weight is a lie. My bf is super skinny, he eats whatever he wants but he also doesn't binge ever. When he's full he just stops. He ofter skips breakfast too. I think he's eating intuitively without even realizing it. He also did a lot of sports and he's always super busy running around at his work. So there's alway and explanation. Even if you feel like you have a fast metabolism, you're probably just really good at intuitive eating
@@danijane2819 Most metabolisms function at a normal level. Most thin people have normal metabolisms, they just listen to their hunger cues. They eat when they’re hungry, and stop with they’re content (not full).
This was so insightful and wonderful. I haven’t seen the show in a long time (I used to watch it when it came out, when I was around 8), and I thought Rory’s life was so amazing. She was one of the TV characters I wanted to emulate, because we already had a lot in common- brown hair, smart, living in New England- but I always found it so ridiculously unfair that she and her mom could eat Mac and cheese and burgers and fries *all the time*, and look the way they did, while I was overweight (even as a kid) and on a diet all the time (guided by a registered dietician). I also played sports- it made no sense! Even then, I harbored deep resentment against these characters, for making me feel like something was wrong with me all the time, and I was missing out on spontaneity and indulging in great food (especially as a bonding experience) that fed my soul. Thank you for this video. We can tell it was so well thought-out.
It's a show about comfort and coziness, warm happy people (except Emily of course), community cohesiveness, the smell of fresh coffee in a small town diner and a sexy grumpy protective Papa Bear named Luke behind the counter. It's like a feverish dream with hot dudes all pining for you, warm cozy interiors and lots of junk food that doesn't make you fat. That's why I love Gilmore Girls and rewatch it when I'm down and feel lonely.
Agreed! It’s like home! There are people who are accepting and fun, and those who are judgmental and overbearing. But they love each other and go through the ups and downs.
I watched GG recently as whole for the first time. I have so many problems with that series. Not only the eating, but also the extra 4 episodes where we basically find out that Rory is incapable spoilt brat with Yale degree that she puts into no use. Horrible message all around.
Ugh the end of the revival annoyed me so much. Without including spoilers, the attempt to draw parallels between two very different things was infuriating.
Well I see it the other way round. She gets nowhere precisely because she’s a spoiled brat who has always had it easy, doesn’t think of the consequences of her actions, and doesn’t know real work.
As a 30-something who went to college but am working in retail, I found Rory relatable in the miniseries. When I was younger, I thought my life would be different at the age I am and that I would be “further along” in my life. I was glad to see that Rory wasn’t as successful at that point as she likely thought she would have been.
Growing up as one of those people that people would marvel at because of how much I could eat and still stay skinny here's my 2 cents. Most people are privy to one or 2 of the meals I would eat in a day. I would eat a large lunch and people would comment but not see that I didn't eat breakfast that morning or had a rather small one or notice that that I didn't eat much the day before. They would see me consume a large portion of junk food in one sitting and assume that I would eat like that on a daily basis instead of maybe once a week. In the case of the Gilmore Girls. 1) While Rory and Lorelei don't exercise they are often shown walking from place to place. They only seem to drive or take the bus when its necessary. As long its within walking distance they walk. 2) From my recollection of the show they weren't seen eating breakfast a lot. They were usually seen drinking coffee in the morning. Black coffee has no calories and helps control hunger hormones. It possible that on a regular basis they were only eating 2 meals a day. 3) They were also almost never seen snacking outside of movie nights and other similar activities. 4) If they did in fact get majority of their meals from Luke's, diner food doesn't automatically mean unhealthy food. We've seen that Luke is actually a really good cook. He's arguably chef level since he's received praise from Sookie. There's a good chance the food he serves is fresh, organic and relatively healthy.
It's not just what we see on screen. it's what is said as well. you have good points, but characters in the show literally all agree that the girls eat like shit and are still skinny af It's how the characters were written to be
@@laika.1069 I'm more saying the writing is realistic excluding the revival. Whenever people would see me eating large portions they would go on and on about like it was an everyday thing. Even when I was eating normal portions they would comment on the times I ate more. People always made it seem like I was a bottomless pit because I am so small. I had a healthy appetite and still do but it was very nearly as extreme as people made it out to be and if someone taller and larger than me ate my regular portions it wouldn't have been such a big deal. I'm just saying from my life experience that if Lorelei and Rory were real people it's very possible that their diet was exaggerated buy those around them.
@@laika.1069 I mean I eat like them and I'm very skinny (but it isn't healthy to eat that kind of food or even that much of food for someone my size so I'm trying to fix this)
Also I had a few friends like this, the real secret is, they don't actually eat that much lol if you see them eat a whole burger thats probably the only thing theyve eaten that day. If theyre having dessert, they didn't eat lunch. They tend to be snackers, they eat candy instead of food, icecream for dinner etc. Generally people that love to tell you they love to eat, don't actually eat that much volume-wise.
Great video! I didn’t realize how often they made jokes about eating a ton and looking as good as they do. One thing I really like about the writing is that Sookie’s size was never a joke or mentioned. It never became part of a character arc or something for her to overcome.
I really liked that, too! It makes me wonder why in the characters minds Sookie's body was perfect, but another character of the same size was "wrong".
I love how detailed & informative this video is! Gilmore Girls became my comfort show to make it through my final semester of college, and I acknowledged the amount of focus the food had but never noticed just h o w focused it truly was... Funny enough, I actually eat/ate my lunch while watching the show because of how lovely the food always looks! Definitely an amazing analysis on these topics ❤️👏
Friends had this effect on me. I never eat pizza, chinese delivery and so on yet it's all they eat and come on, look at those girls, they are so so thin and their skin is gorgeous. It really made me feel like a failure.
I'm in the minority of people who've remained the same weight since I was in high school. My youngest sister and I are ten years apart (23 and 33) and she recently told me that she doesn't remember a day when I wasn't skinny and she wonders where all the fat goes. But at the same time, we were raised on a whole foods diet, we have good genetics, and we were always active. My jobs have required physical activity from nannying, to being a beauty advisor at Ulta, to janitorial work now.
I'm impressed at the amount of research and thought put into this video! Great analysis about a subject I was constantly bothered about throughout the show. Congratulations on the work!
They give me the impression of both having eating disorders that maybe they don't even acknowledge to one another. I'm 99% sure my MIL is anorexic and she barely eats her food, but she talks about food a lot, buys lots of food and cooks daily. She even puts a lot on her own plate, but she doesn't actually eat much of it. My FIL is also always dieting and they both put pressure on my SIL to be fit and thin. The whole family is seemingly obsessed with food, they spend tons of money on it and over-order intentionally, but let most of it go bad or get thrown away. I stayed with them for two weeks last month and my MIL left each nights' leftovers out on the counter overnight every night I stayed there, she literally throws away half of what she makes. My husband still has trouble eating and often goes underweight. He denies that it has anything to do with his family's diet, but his parents have eaten like that since he and his sister were kids and forced a restricted, "healthy" diet and constant athletics their entire childhoods :/
I understand what you mean, but I also understand what they tried to say with this. Sometimes intensely dieting doesn’t really mean that you will lose weight or that you will look thin. It brings pressure and people bounce back a lot of times. Sometimes having a more relaxed, casual relationship with food, not worrying about so much is more healthy and can even help you lose weight. For me personally, watching Gilmore Girls helped me with my relationship with food a lot because I was kind of obsessed with dieting and exercising for a while and watching this show somehow made it ok to not be. It helped me to let go. And I became so much more ok with my body and weight after that and even got skinnier and healthier while being genuinely happy and ok with my body. It’s always been my comfort show and I never felt a pressure of being pretty and thin from it, on the contrary it helped me to accept myself so much more. Watching Lorelai and Rory ordering all that food made me feel safe and ok with it. I think it depends, how you look at it.
Actually you see them struggle with clothes here and there. They also show the girls being feminine, girly and into shopping. So they are not completely 'cool girl'. I agree when it comes to food and bodyshaming tho - even worse in the revival because some time has passed and Palladino should've known better
Came here to say this - I can think of several occasions of the top of my head where they struggle with clothes. I appreciate what this video is saying and some of it's true, but it's not an accurate depiction of the show and the complex story lines that lead to some of the snippet clips used.
I remember hearing Lauren Graham in an interview in the 90s saying she avoided looking at herself naked in the mirror at all costs. She said it as if it was a joke and very normal behavior but it always stuck with me as really sad. She was so beautiful but had these body image issues. I'm really glad people are embracing body positivity nowadays.
Love your video and the thought you put into this! The gilmore girls subreddit has these discussions a lot! Another thing about their eating habits is that even if it magically didn't affect their weight, their unhealthy diet would surely at least show up in other aspects such as having skin/hair problems (I don't wanna say bad in case it offends anyone lol), nutrient deficiencies, coffee breath, cavities and yellowing teeth probably, and sugar comas/lethargy and that's just off the top of my head. And you were so right about the product placements omg. The first time I ever tried pop tarts or twinkies (they don't have them in my country) was so I can see why the gilmores love them so much and they were garbage lmao. There's also an article about this woman who ate like gilmores for a week and she talks about how horrible and constipated it made her feel, can't remember which magazine it was though!
I loved the show (although the last season was a drag), but it always bothered me how the characters indulged in junk food but never really gained weight. This kind of fairy tale dramas are problematic indeed, as if fat people are fat because they're somehow genetically flawed or something. But the ad-placements, wow! Did not notice them so much while watching. Thank you for making this pretty accurate analysis of the great but misleading show (in terms of diet and eating). Their lifestyle, aspirations all reflected the capitalist social life in the US actually. Without dramas like this the mythologization cannot continue probably and hence are necessary part of the system's operation.
Thank you for watching! I didn’t even get to the topic of how impossible it would be for Lorelai to afford their home + all the eating out and coffee on her salary as a single mother 😅 but there’s a few videos on RUclips covering that :)
@@JessicaVianaa Yes! That's why these stories and their people are myths, something you can dream about but cannot achieve. Also note the alternative cultural vibes of the show that contradict the issues discussed in your video. In combination with that, it looks even hypocritical now.
i have never seen someone so dramatic on this platform.. 1: there are real people who indulge and not gain weight, and it isnt even *that* uncommon 2: its ridiculous to call the show misleading unless you're so stupid that you use it as a guide to help you with your diet.
Omg thank you ! I thought I was the only one who felt like this about their "food acting" ! I felt so angry each time that they just left the scene, without even getting a single bite of their food; Meanwhile, they're claiming they "eat a lot" .... LIKE WTFFF
Yes, soo good, the video we needed of all the thoughts we've had about the Gilmore Girls and their strange relationship with food! I would add if you wanted to expand, that Marvelous Ms. Masel is an interesting character to compare to Lorelai this way in that she's effortlessly thin and beautiful and always has enough money to eat out too, they show her doing occasional aerobics but she eats what she wants. Except she actually acknowledges that she cares about staying thin more than Lorelai, they show that she takes her measurements compulsively every day and writes it in a journal and she makes a big deal that her measurements haven't changed since before she had her kids. I feel like these shows give us an interesting little window into how ASP thinks about food, or what's desirable for a woman. Effortless cool girl exterior, actually carefully calculating how to stay thin internally. You have unearthed the Gilmore Girls secret that they are around food often enough just rarely actually eating very much.
When I first started watching Gilmore Girls and they said the "we eat soooo much haha" thing, I knew then that we'd rarely ever actually see them eat. The set decoration in the show is so abundant though that they always have so much food just sitting around the scene. It's really strange actually
Thanks for the comparison between what Lorelai and Lauren Graham actually ate, and Lauren's serial dieting-it's infuriating to know that the leads worked so to maintain the appearance of these "effortless" characters. Been watching the series recently, mostly for the first time, and the disordered food attitudes are so noticeable-preoccupation with food, binging, using coffee to ramp up your metabolism/purge. It's also pretty glaring in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel where Midge is shown measuring all parts of her body and tracking numbers in a book that she's clearly been keeping for a while. Throughout the show there are jokes about people's weight and Midge and her mother being preoccupied with thinness. ASP was a dancer growing up, so I'd guess that she was around a ton disordered/dysmorphic thinking, but I do wish she could stop herself from replicating it and justifying it as "being a different time." Like you showed, there's plenty of these attitudes in the 2016 revival, so it can't be written off as a historical artifact.
I think another excuse behind the writers “fast metabolism” thing is that we are actually never supposed to believe what Lorelai says when she’s performing her sarcastic rants. Even though she says she hates exercise and eating healthy, doesn’t mean she actually refrains from it. We as viewers don’t see it so we must trust Lorelai’s “truth” which is questionable. In season 4 when Rory goes to Yale, Rory goes back home and sees Lorelai has tomatos on her stove. Lorelai also craves an apple during Sookie’s second labor. Lorelai seems capable of eating fruits and vegetables and DOES. We as an audience, are just not meant to believe she does and I think it’s because that’s typical Lorelai. I also think of the moment in season 6 when it’s revealed that Lorelai and Michel go on coffee dates to Westons bakery and have chats by themselves. In season 2/3 Lorelai goes to Westons and refrains from drinking the coffee cause it’s just not Luke’s coffee. Justifiably the audience then regards Luke’s coffee as better and the only coffee Lorelai is capable of consuming. I was kinda shook when I learned about her and Michel’s coffee dates because one it’s Michel and two … other coffee ?!?! Impossible… But now we know Lorelais word is not her bond and when she’s with Rory its sarcasm overload and frankly very dramatic speeches pertaining to what they are capable of consuming😂. I think you bring up fabulous points and ultimately the writers are playing a very dangerous game when purporting the cool girl mythology onto the characters. Not to mention, it’s effects on the audience. One time I saw Rory make a huggeee bowl of Rice Krispies cereal , Lorelai proceeded to add mini marshmallows. Rory the milk. And then Rory never takes a bite but Lorelai consumes the bowl. I’ve been craving Rice Krispies and mini marshmallows ever SINCE! Knowing it might wreak havoc on my body because I suffer from bloating issues but I can’t resist. It’d be nice and healthy as a viewer watching the show to them put non chemically processed things into their bodies in such visually jarring amounts when they totally didn’t in real life. Kind of like Monica from friends. She plays a chef who struggled with her food intake and her relationship with it and makes a variety of balanced foods at home but on set the actor ate salads every single day to maintain her figure. I never saw the character Monica eat a salad and that’s a real discrepancy.
My sister is slim and super pretty and just like them she pretty much lives off junk food, it’s her portion sizes that keep her slim (she never used to be slim either), but her diet nor exercise routine never changed, it was JUST the portion sizes. so many people don’t realise how drastic portion size changes can make
Thank you for covering this topic in Gilmore Girls because it’s one my favourite pet peeves! My biggest issue is that GG is all tell, no show. We only ever get told that they eat soooooo much but neither Lorelai not Rory are ever shown actually eating anything! They don’t even take one fake-bite of their burgers!!! And the same goes for Rory being sooo studious. She isn’t! She seriously never studies for her school, whereas Paris actually sacrifices her entire life and isn’t valedictorian or gets special treatment in school as Rory does and it infuriates me more than a fictional show should lol
this happens a lot on the show, where we are told something over and over but don't see it. Like Rory being so smart, so brilliant etc. but where? she seemed very average the entire show in that respect! lol
Lmao. The scenes where she gets into the school and they give her all her work, and then after when she takes the test and gets a D. Like for a clever person striving to get into Harvard, yeah it's a lot of work but she should be able to get a B at the worst not a D. I was like "damn, I can do better than this!"
Literallyyyy, after seeing Rory going to Chilton and getting a D on her first test. That’s when I was like Rory is smart but not like gifted or a brilliant. She smart and probably a fast learner or bc she reads a lot it helps a lot when it comes to English class. But that’s it. When she previous went To her old high school In stars, hollow. She did good because the US education low-key sucks. and it was a public school, obviously, they’re not gonna go in depth like a private school
I might be a bit late, but telling everyone that you eat sooo much when in fact you don't is actually a phenomen, and I don't even mean in an eating-disorder way. From when I was grown to the the height I am today until I was maybe 17 I constantly was very underweight, without any shifts, not half a gram. And I was convinced that I ate bc when I liked the food, I would scoop down a lot of it (again, not in an eating-disorder way). Today I know I didn't avoid eating, I was just very picky about when and what to eat. It was only in my last two school years when I was in contact with the other kids that I realized that I would regularely skip meals or wouldn't eat a lot. Not in order to be thin and beautiful, it was just something I did. So, yes, it can actually be a misconception of oneself, maybe it's not a mistake on the show's side but a clever commentary. Or maybe it was just dumb, I don't know.
As a person who always been skinny, and have people talked how I ate a lot (usually friends), I don't eat a lot. I've never ate a lot. I ate a lot because we were eating junk food, but I came home and I didn't ate nothing for the rest of the day because I felt full. And my relationship with food is not great. I m not eating healthy, and skip meals a lot. I feel that what they wanted to portrait but couldn't.
Loved the video and I completely missed the product placements - I figured they stood out to me because we don't have pop tarts etc. in the UK 😅 just wanted to give you a massive shout out for finding all the music from the show, it took me right back to my teenage years 😀
Sookie is the most balanced character in the show.
Confident i her skin too and very jovial.
@@nostradamus1162 that one was out of character because Melissa McCarthy got pregnant in real life but they already had done the vasectomy story line so they had to back track 😂 also ASP was no longer writing for that season so there was a long out of character in that season.
Weeeeeeeelll except the vasectomy and then in the revival. Like I get Lorelei not knowing what’s up with suki but even Jackson didn’t know.
@@mallorilesseski8676 they could’ve just said it failed rather than an uncomfortable non-consent storyline…
Not overweight at all, but they certainly don’t appear underfed or undernourished or as though they’re being super restrictive with calories.
wait so whats your point because thats literally what she said in the video LOL
EDIT:
There's a lot of comments along the lines of "that wasn't intended by the writers" and "the show isn't about that". I'm not saying that Lorelei does or does not have an eating disorder or was written to have one, I'm just reading into her actions for fun! Sometimes the curtains are just blue, but isn't it fun to see if there's an extra layer of meaning? The beauty of stories is personal interpretation, if you don't agree with mine that's great! if you do that's also great!
totally agree
This is really how I saw it throughout watching it when I was a kid and teenager.
This is really insightful
they would order fast food like it was water, never eat it, talk about their magical metabolism, and then fatshame people. absolutely 100% my least favourite part of the show
Just imagining all of that food they ordered, got up and left on the table going to waste stresses me out
@@katieh8186 YES the food waste?? and then they'd complain about having no money! and go and order another burger they wouldn't eat!
@@lilysflower9685 where exactly could you detect the so called „fat phobia“ in the show? Do you have examples?
@@YourMama-xn8qs ..did you watch the video?
One Oreo !?! That’s downright criminal
TW: eating disorder (in the "Skins" TV show)
This reminded me of that scene when Cassie "teaches" Sid how she plays around with her food so it seems like she eats, but in reality she doesn't, and Sid gets to understand her a bit more
I think part of this stems from the way women are taught to think ab food, diet culture teaches us that Oreos are “bad”and that women should eat small portions, so girls will eat one and be like “omg I eat so much junk food!”
Her parents pay for Rory’s school and college
That's actually a real thing. I think it called Child prodigy syndrome.
?? idk what show you watched cause seasons 5-7 are namely just depictions of rory’s extremely limited worldview/perspective
I guess but there was rachel, anna, etc.

Amy Dunne saying “I ate cold pizza and remained a size 2” sums up Gilmore girls.
Gone Girl is a masterpiece imo. The book is better but I still love the way the movie portrayed it. All hail Gillian Flynn!
@@aivlysplath For sure. I think Amy Dunne is the best female villain ever written.
@@aivlysplath he ending of the movie didn't really make sense but I get it, the initial mystery and character set up was great
I remember watching this as a teenager and being flabbergasted by how much unhealthy food they seemed to eat while still being so slim.
Thanks for watching! It’s a good idea for a future video, it’s quite a complex topic I’ll add it to my list ❤️
it’s sad to think that the actress herself clearly is a little obsessive of diets and being healthy and having her character also be obsessed with food must have been so hard to not constantly think about food (especially junk food)
Taking about a solid 1 year diet break and fueling my body did amazing things for me
Yeah well fast and slow metabolism
Isn’t really a thing it’s more pop science (correct me if I’m wrong), however when everyone says people have a different motabolism the only factors are height, muscle mass, sex and age (might’ve missed one) so if someone is the same sex the same age and around the same height as you then they don’t have a higher or slower metabolism than you at al.
It's easy to eat a 1200 calorie meal and stay thin if you don't eat the rest of the day
That’s also what I think too. They probably drink coffee and eat little bites throughout the day before actually eating something for dinner.
i do that
i agree! i used to do this, eating once a day a chocolate bar or ice cream or a burger but just drank tea or coffee for the rest of my day

i would argue that lorelai and rory can only be friends with girls who they think are less beautiful than they are, or have less social power than they do (sookie, an overweight woman, lane, an asian american girl with a strict mother, or paris a girl who's very insecure about her looks and has fewer social skills) because they don't view them as a threat, they are nice to them because they think of themselves as above them, even if they don't overtly say it.
So very true! Their egos would be too hurt if they had a close friend who was an equal.
Don’t agree, they only see rivals to woman who love their crushes. Not because they are ubove them. I just can’t help point out your comment support the notion that girls easily get jealous of other girls which ruins thier relationship. Girls support and love girls. And in Gilmore Girls they only hate anyone stealing thier crushes/boyfriends, and not just by Existing
it's sad that I know some girls that act like that in real life. They can't have friends "better" than them
@@magpiecritic3083 The problem with your statement is that we never actually see them interact with other women who rival them in physical beauty and popularity.
You are looking too deep into it tbh
ASP?
@@RaniaBhatti It's short for Amy Sherman-Palladino, the showrunner

I never watched Gilmore girls (I was too young at the time), but I did watch iCarly as a kid. There’s a character Sam who eats a lot but is always beautiful and skinny, and I was trying to figure out how to be like her in real life. Later the actress said that it was damaging to her to be portrayed as a huge eater on TV while she basically had an eating disorder in real life to keep her figure. This “skinny girl eats a lot consistently” does seem to be bad overall

I wouldn’t say she has the best relationship with food if she’s overeating.
This show made me believe I could drink as much coffee as I wanted. Turns out, I can’t, unless I want to get very jittery and anxious.
Lorelai being jittery and anxious was kinda normalised…
I'm so glad you mentioned they never eat their food, it always bothered me they'd go to Luke's so often (which must have been expensive) and then never eat any of the food and leave it all on the table
Yes! This bothered me as well. So much food waste going on. Not sure why they even ordered anything.
They said that because of the many shots it might took to shoot a scene the food went bad so it was like a prop also it was for consistency issues during the scene
Honestly though that's just kinda the way the film industry works. Like, if people were to actually eat the food, you'd generate more waste because you'd have to, say, order one plate of food per take, and if you have to do 5 takes...
maybe luke gave them a family and friend discount 🤣
even though they need the food to stay the same for visual continuity, they could always have plates of food that have been “eaten” when they’re leaving the restaurant instead of having them be served and suddenly leaving
But you could tell from their portion sizes that they're not big eaters at all
It felt like they wanted to act fat (because fat people are known for being funny and having more entertaining personalities because they didn't get validation through their looks growing up)
While meeting the standards of being skinny.
The Jennifer Lawrence food quirk was ✨ emotional damage ✨ for thirteen year olds in the early 2000s. 😅 Like Jennifer is still very thin but was obviously muscular and strong in The Hunger Games movies. I didn’t realize she was working really diligently with a personal trainer and probably prioritizing protein/healthy foods while allowing some pizza and desserts in her diet. one thing that's always confused me is that in the Kim family make what I'd call white people vegetarian food. like it's not like Korean cooking is lacking in health conscious vegetarian dishes. it seems super odd to take something like tofu and make tofurkey when you could just make a normal tofu dish.

Super true
Yes, 100% agree with this. Lorelai clearly had arrested development.
I read a blog post about this and I’m so glad someone made a video about it. There’s two things wrong with how food is handled on Gilmore Girls-
1. Enjoying food is seen as a quirk for women and not something normal, unlike men
2. it’s only ok to enjoy food as a woman if you’re skinny
I’m sure there’s more

This was big in the 2000s, being quirky, smart, ‘not like other girls’ and would choose a burger over a rice cake. This is how guys would find you interesting.
I have a theory that their food acting was seriously limited by the style of filming favored in the series. For them to use spit buckets there would have to be frequent cuts, but the show is known for staying in wide shots for as long as possible. Cutting so frequently would make the film choppy to the directors and have much more of an impact (for them) than seeing the actors actually eat. Just a guess.
Definitely a factor.

It's never safe.
Cassie from the show Skins was a great example of this. In one episode she explains to a friend her little tricks to pretend she's eating.
And if you had pizza with her, she’d be one slice, and maybe not even finish the whole slice.

the one thing that I think was ""better"" (barely) about previous body standards is that they were usually naturally possible. what I mean is that you take these skinny women - they were expected to be skinny everywhere. or a more curvy woman of decades prior, a Marilyn Monroe for instance, she wasn't exactly expected to have abs. a little fat was "acceptable". being like them took a lot of suffering and was unhealthy, but it was at least doable in a few cases. these days, a woman is supposed to be *both* skinny enough that she has a really flat stomach, while also having the body fat necessary to sustain large breasts and ass. it is quite literally impossible without surgery, and that's a scary thing
this is so true i hadn’t really thought about it this way… we will never win 😔

As I get older I see how terrible and neglectful it is to raise a kid on pizzas and diner food and teach her a false sense of entitlement. Which by the way, is entirely possible thanks to your grandparents wealth (and while we're on it, wanting one family dinner a week in return for paying your daughter's school AND college fees is not unreasonable, Lorelei Gilmore!!!)
yeah i 100% agree! at one point lorelai just made rude comments about sherry's appareance (saying she's so thin) when she literally looks the same!
I haven’t finished watching the video but I’m so happy that someone finally made a video on this! I used to love Gilmore girls but the older I got the more I saw these big red flags from the show. Okay Paris

Paris is smart though, she asked a logical question “is this what you really look like when you first wake up?” Rory could have told the truth, or just been coy and made a joke like “of course my lips naturally have glitter on them.” Paris would have understood
Yet Rory didn’t.
Exactly. It’s really not that deep. They whole show is a realistic fantasy.
But having some crumb of reality just cements the fact that they "still ate like that for years didn't have any consequences"
In my opinion, they should have just never done it. Leave them as the cartoonish trope of eating everything but the kitchen sink. Leave fiction as fiction, not everything has to be meta.

@@twinklybones8952 the way I thought a size 6 was fat because of the way they looked at Anne’s character when she told them her size 😩
The whole thing of the girl who is effortlessly thin fucked me up as a kid. I thought I was broken because of it
You should do the desperate housewives characters diet bc they’re all so skinny Susan’s is explained by an unnaturally fast metabolism and you saw gabby and Edie exercise but Bree was constantly in the kitchen making baked goods and was only talked about exercising a couple times and Lynette went to one workout class and went jogging like once bc she never had time to exercise
Thanks for the suggestion! :)
@@kuntybanks5374 sure but she still only went to Pilates like twice and the amount of wine they all drank would’ve rlly bumped the calories up the only ones who were a normal size were Renee and Katherine

It would be interesting if she did a commentary on the Nanny as Fran Drescher apparently had an eating disorder during some of the show.
They worked it into the show that she was on a diet. So rather than eating, she’d be chasing the food while the other characters tried to keep it from her. It was pretty funny.
@@erin9110 they mention 90’s diet culture a lot in that show. They talk about slim fast and the thigh master
Omg yes thank you! I love the series in general but this depiction of food was always bothering me. But I never noticed how bad it actually is. Thank you for talking about this!
Thank you for watching!
What are you talking about? Plenty of American shows have nudity and cussing. Euphoria? It’s Always Sunny?
Agree 👍

I'm happy you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching! :)

Fast metabolism is real, of course it is. It's biology, it's proven in scientific studies the same as low or 'normal' metabolism.
@@danijane2819 Most metabolisms function at a normal level. Most thin people have normal metabolisms, they just listen to their hunger cues. They eat when they’re hungry, and stop with they’re content (not full).
Finally… common sense.
The new episodes were horrible
Ugh the end of the revival annoyed me so much. Without including spoilers, the attempt to draw parallels between two very different things was infuriating.
Well I see it the other way round. She gets nowhere precisely because she’s a spoiled brat who has always had it easy, doesn’t think of the consequences of her actions, and doesn’t know real work.
what..☠️☠️
As a 30-something who went to college but am working in retail, I found Rory relatable in the miniseries.
100%!! Luke is a health freak too so his food is probably unlike typical diner food
They always eat a poptart in the mornings or sometimes cereal, but yeah I kind of agree in general.
It's not just what we see on screen. it's what is said as well. you have good points, but characters in the show literally all agree that the girls eat like shit and are still skinny af
It's how the characters were written to be
@@laika.1069 I'm more saying the writing is realistic excluding the revival.
Yea but if you look closely you'll notice all the Friends share like 1 pizza between them
You should stop being so easily moved by TV shows
I'm in the minority of people who've remained the same weight since I was in high school.
In which sense they struggle with clothes? I don’t remember it…
I remember hearing Lauren Graham in an interview in the 90s saying she avoided looking at herself naked in the mirror at all costs. She said it as if it was a joke and very normal behavior but it always stuck with me as really sad. She was so beautiful but had these body image issues. I'm really glad people are embracing body positivity nowadays.
That always drove me nuts! They’d order food or have food in front of them and then leave without eating anything 😖
This video is so good! Like a dissertation. You’re very insightful! The amount of work that went into this is mind boggling. Great work!
Thank you so much for the kind comment and support ❤️❤️🥰
1: there are real people who indulge and not gain weight, and it isnt even *that* uncommon
2: its ridiculous to call the show misleading unless you're so stupid that you use it as a guide to help you with your diet.
Omg thank you ! I thought I was the only one who felt like this about their "food acting" !
I felt so angry each time that they just left the scene, without even getting a single bite of their food;

Impossible…
But now we know Lorelais word is not her bond and when she’s with Rory its sarcasm overload and frankly very dramatic speeches pertaining to what they are capable of consuming😂.
I think you bring up fabulous points and ultimately the writers are playing a very dangerous game when purporting the cool girl mythology onto the characters. Not to mention, it’s effects on the audience. One time I saw Rory make a huggeee bowl of Rice Krispies cereal
, Lorelai proceeded to add mini marshmallows. Rory the milk. And then Rory never takes a bite but Lorelai consumes the bowl. I’ve been craving Rice Krispies and mini marshmallows ever SINCE! Knowing it might wreak havoc on my body because I suffer from bloating issues but I can’t resist. It’d be nice and healthy as a viewer watching the show to them put non chemically processed
things into their bodies in such visually jarring amounts when they totally didn’t in real life.
Kind of like Monica from friends. She plays a chef who struggled with her food intake and her relationship with it and makes a variety of balanced foods at home but on set the actor ate salads every single day to maintain her figure. I never saw the character Monica eat a salad and that’s a real discrepancy.
My sister is slim and super pretty and just like them she pretty much lives off junk food, it’s her portion sizes that keep her slim (she never used to be slim either), but her diet nor exercise routine never changed, it was JUST the portion sizes. so many people don’t realise how drastic portion size changes can make
This is very true, it is usually the portion sizes
Wow! The amount of work, research and effort that went into this is amazing. Soooo entertaining and really pulled back the curtain for me!
ur such a kind and caring producer, to watch our for both lauren and viewers by giving a warning about the mention of calories. lots of love 💖
She did good because the US education low-key sucks. and it was a public school, obviously, they’re not gonna go in depth like a private school
this was so well done & it’s apparent how much effort you put into it! (also you watched 7 seasons OH GOD)
Ha, thanks for the support! 🙈 editing this nearly destroyed me but if I'm doing something I'm committing 100% 😂
Their food acting reminds me of Cassie's demo to Sid in Skins UK, lol 😂
Loved the video and I completely missed the product placements - I figured they stood out to me because we don't have pop tarts etc. in the UK 😅 just wanted to give you a massive shout out for finding all the music from the show, it took me right back to my teenage years 😀
There’s a video on RUclips with all the La La songs, about 10 mins long I think - I’ve been humming to them in my head for a month now 😂
This is so important! Please analyze more shows from the 2000s. Would love to see your take on Desperate Housewives and One Tree Hill.
