  • Florida man faces trial for a catastrophic school shooting, but before he does, he must face jurors for a battery case. Prosecutors say that’s Parkland School Shooter, 23, on footage rushing a Broward County jail guard in November 2018. Jury selection is scheduled to start Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 9:30 a.m. ET. Opening statements are scheduled for Oct. 18.
The Shooter is the person facing 17 counts of first-degree murder, and 17 counts of attempted first-degree murder for opening fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County, Florida on Valentine’s Day 2018. Then 19, he was a former student there. While awaiting trial at the Broward County Jail, he attacked one of the guards, say, prosecutors. In the Nov. 13, 2018 incident, the guard told him not to drag his sandals on the floor, prosecutors said. The Shooter flipped him off, and, as clear from the video, rushed him and struck him. He initially had the upper hand, but the guard regained control, and The Shooter eventually gave up.
17 people died in the high school shooting: 14-year-old student Alyssa Alhadeff, 35-year-old teacher Scott Beigel, 14-year-old student Martin Duque Anguiano, 17-year-old student Nicholas Dworet, 37-year-old assistant football coach Aaron Feis, 14-year-old student Jaime Guttenberg, 49-year-old athletic director Christopher Hixon, 15-year-old student Luke Hoyer, 14-year-old student Cara Loughran, 14-year-old student Gina Montalto, 17-year-old student Joaquin Oliver, 14-year-old student Alaina Petty, 18-year-old student Meadow Pollack, 17-year-old student Helena Ramsay, 14-year-old student Alexander Schachter, 16-year-old student Carmen Schentrup, and 15-year-old student Peter Wang.
Officials arrested The Shooter shortly after. Interview footage showed him insisting a voice in his head told him to carry out the shooting. He called it the “Demon.”
“Personally, I think you’re using the demon as an excuse,” said Broward County Sheriff’s Detective John Curcio.
The Shooter’s defense has not disputed that he is responsible. They have been trying to save him from the death penalty.

We just had a school shooting about 20 minutes from where I live. It was truly a nightmare. And will continue for the rest of their lives. So some kids feels the need to shoot up a school hoping to do what… so he would be remembered as the lunatic who killed 17 and seriously injured that many more. I wonder if he still feels that way. The impact statements are heart wrenching, I can't even imagine the strength it took for these parents to sit up there and read them. I know there is nothing I could say that could help these families immense grief. I just pray they find peace one day. I will not forget these children who's lives were ripped away. My heart goes out to each and every parent and person affected by this.

The way they moved the lawyer who has been crying when she hears victim impact statements to the back... It was nice to see some humanity in their ranks; a reminder that their job is not at all easy. Hearing those statements is heartbreaking. I never knew those kids or the brave adults who protected them with their lives, but hearing from their families, I can't help but grieve a little for all of them. All those promising people gone in the blink of an eye and for nothing. It will never make sense.

This made him become very "upset" and "agitated", and his defense team gave him colored pencils and a coloring book to "keep him calm and soothe him" in order to get through the selection. The prosecution objected and the judge did take those away. He's only allowed to have jail issued pencils and paper.

His lawyers argued that the pictures, videos and testimony evidence are already enough and that taking the jurors for a "jury view" is unnecessary (prejudicial, etc)
And his lawyers waived his right to be there for the "jury view" (the trip). As a defendant (or subject in a penalty phase like this), one has the right to be present at all legal proceedings and that would include a trip to the crime scene. I believe his lawyer stated that they will have him waive his appearance tomorrow am with the judge.

I think of my own children and can't imagine a day without them 💔 As a teacher I would love to have any one of these parents or surviving students visit our schools and share their experiences and input on how we can make our schools safer and talk to the students about the impact of this devastating loss. Maybe it could make a difference of a student that might be thinking about doing something like this. I am a parent 1st and an educator 2nd. That being said, I have made it a point to be in the same schools as my children to keep them safe. A reality that I noticed at the start of this trial. I didn't understand the strong need to be at a school where my children were until now. I would love to know if there is anything we can do in our schools to keep the memories and dreams of the students and teachers that lost their lives way too soon. I don't know what sentence will be handed down for this individual...there are all kinds of rules about cruel and unusual punishment, but I hope the court and the judge can find a way to be creative, and by that I mean, find a way that the victims (loved ones of those murdered) will have a say. Forget about honoring the criminal, let's start honoring the victims and sending a message to any future ones who think they can simply get a life sentence and be on with it and a few hours of notoriety in the media, that the shame factor, that the impression upon them for this crime sinks in. I would suggest, something along the lines of, get up every morning working for a living, in such a way that your food and lodging now provided by the state is paid for, so you are not a cost to our criminal justice system, and then every day you are forced to write a letter of apology to one of the family members... I'm sure there are lots and lots of family members, and this letter must be unique and a known entity of who this letter is going to (aunt or uncle, brother, sister, grandparent... That should take at least 25 years to do. Then any money that you earn over and above the cost of your incarceration, be set aside in a victim's need fund. There are untold issues that this kind of trauma causes. You owe them more than you have to give.

That crime scene has been preserved in the exact way it was that day (at great expense for the city and the emotional health of these families btw) the fact the defense says changes were made to it when there were not, is just like what she tried to do when she said the jury's names had been leaked when they had not. Ludicrous.
That building and the shooter must go down in order for these families to have any kind of closure. They have all been literally frozen in time for too long.
That is the reason I think the death penalty is needed here, not as punishment because no punishment can atone for what was taken, it's more about these families being able to never see that building or hear his name again. They need it.

Its really important that the defendant gets fair council and a proper defense because he can appeal or declare a mistrial if the council is not trying their best for their client.
