Unfortunately, the people who make the laws likely need to see the pain being experienced by the families before they will actually pass any laws that might prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future. Yes. They have to convince the jury that he is 100% guilty for this. Probably was told by his lawyers to hunch over and appear small. Little techniques they use to sway the jury in his favor, but obviously it won't work.
It’s the death penalty trial. The state wants him to receive the death sentence and his defense team will try to get him a life sentence. A jury has to impose a death sentence.
So, I believe there are at least two different kinds of trails that you’re wondering about. The first is the kind of trial everyone is familiar with, where someone pleads Not Guilty. In this kind of trial, prosecutors have to prove, without reasonable doubt, that the defendant is guilty. The jury decides if the defendant guilty or nor guilty based on the evidence and give their recommendations on the defendant’s sentence if found guilty. This kind of trail, when the defendant pleads guilty still needs to go through evidence so that the defendant is given an appropriate sentence, either by a judge directly or a jury. In cases where the death penalty is recommended by the prosecution it is standard practice that a jury of peers determines whether it is appropriate or not. Because of the nature of the death penalty, prosecutors must convince the jury that the defendant should be put to death, without reasonable doubt. If they skipped this part, it would be possible for the defendant, Cruz in this case, would get a lighter sentence.
He is enjoying it. Exactly what he wanted. My only question would be why he changed the date. Was originally planned for 2020. Why change to February 14, 2018?

The focus on the families is SO disgusting
This is a highly watched trial. They are trying to get the American people emotional (naturally happens). Part of an evil government wants to get rid of the 2A. Easier to do when the people are emotional. RIP.
Unfortunately, the people who make the laws likely need to see the pain being experienced by the families before they will actually pass any laws that might prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future. The parents and other family members are essentially representing their children/relatives in court so that it is harder for those in power to think of these victims as just numbers/statistics. Part of honouring their children is showing the court, the law makers and the world how devastating it is to lose them in such a horrific and completely senseless manner. I hope and pray that the right people see the pain on these family members' faces and are motivated to actually do something to prevent other families from having to experience such tragic loss.

im not sure why this is still going on. He pled guilty, the evidence to back it up is overwhelming, so why is this still ongoing?
