I never knew that about braid, now I know what to buy instead of just buying any braid for all types fishing, most youtubers say for grass you need 65 lb braid, but don't explain why now I know why, great video!

I fish mainly with braid from the bank but when it is windy i fish flourocarbon line. 40 pound braid is blown away in wind far more than 14 pound fluoro. Awesome advice and channel. Thanks Matt.

I think a unique category of braid that is worth mentioning is the sinking braids, like Suffix 131 or some specialty JDM jigging lines. If you want to throw cast and retrieve baits, these lines sink like a fluorocarbon and help you maintain depth with diving baits, football or swimbaits/jigs.

I gotta say I love the x5. I’m down in south Florida, sea of grass and the x5 has performed amazingly! I have not found a braid that fishes better on spinning gear! Fishes great on a baitcaster as well. Did I say it’s amazing on spinning gear?! I have had ZERO issues with line twist, tangles, cast great and no failures! On my baitcasting equipment I use the Fitzgerald Vursa braid (black original) and absolutely love it. X5 is a great line 💪🏻🎣!!

Matt, I really like this video. I didn't realize the "Real" difference between the braided lines. I just thought, well I have braided line so I'm good. I looked at my braided line and found that it has 8 strands. When I buy more I will most definitely pay more attention to that. Great video and thanks for your time.

Yep, everything he said. When i first started using braid years ago i was amazed at how long it lasts when compared to mono and carbon. I'm from the generation that grew into braid and carbon, love em both and still use mono quite a bit. Thanks for the vid, swing big tomorrow so ya can fish Sunday.

Matt - very informative! Never really thought about the 5 strand and it’s impact on fishing wood. I agree 5 strand is solid for ripping through grass.

I was surprised you didn't mention the sensativy how much better you feel the small bites and better hook set but all in all good video I use Berkley 9 and other brands as always very informational

I have always been a Maxcautro guy until I used that new 131 G-Core last year. That braid is amazing. I was pitching into the heaviest stuff with 30-40lb braid. No more 50 & 65lb Power Pro for me. That Samurai Braid is pretty dope too.

Ive noticed that braid with less strands is good for heavy vegetation as well, the rough texture from having less strands weaved in lets it saw through vegetation easier than braid with several or more weaves.

I use Berkley braid,mono, and floro. Me personally I have all braid on my casters and spinning. 20lb Berkley high visibility to 10-8 lb floro leader. My casters have 30lb Berkley braid with 12-15lb mono or fluoro leaders. I tried to use straight mono and floro on my reels but I hated it. Braid to leaders to me is so much better. Braid last longer and don’t twist or keep memory. It’s cheaper to retie a leader than respool a reel. Love the Berkley brand!

Your tackle room is freaking awesome you should do a video of a tour of all your baits and boxes that be so interesting and more specifically your older classic baits like balsa crankbaits older topwater prop baits walking baits and jerkbait just all your cool tackle I bet you have a ton of interesting baits

Great video on Braid, people need to know it isn't one braid fits all application. And that goes for Floro and Mono, by watching all these fishing videos you can cut down on the learning curve. Then with a little trial and error you can find what works for you. Using the wrong line cost you fish.

I use braid to fluoro on everything precisely because braid lasts so long. I'm just a weekend bank angler, so I can spool up my 3 rods at the beginning of the season, and go all summer just tying on leaders and cutting away the frays on the braid. I got a 1500 yard spool of power pro almost 2 years ago now, and I still have mountains of it left. Its so much more economical for us casual anglers then replacing a spool of fluoro every couple of months because it gets uncastable.

Matt great information. Have you tried or heard of using straight braid but then using a black sharpie to color the line up from the lure versus tying a mono or fluorocarbon leader?
I use a sharpie to color my braid but not replace leaders
I love the x9 for finesse applications and cranking- and the hi viz really helps me detect bites. It's not the best line for windy weather- may be better than the x5 but, it's super light weight and blows around easily. It's like fishing with sewing thread sometimes. If you can learn to keep your cast trajectory low and lay that line down on the water so the wind doesn't bow it out to the side- you can manage it somewhat in the wind- but it's not easy. Straight fluoro is easier to manage in windy conditions imo.
But you still gotta get the captain to slow his roll a bit if you're going to finesse them- which I can never get my brother to do- his philosophy is, if you cover enough water you don't have to finesse fish. Mine is- why not catch both sets of fish? Run through it power fishing and then go back and pick it apart. But I don't make the payments so- I lose that argument before it even starts.

Thanks for the rundown. I need to switch up a few setups when I get more braid. My spinning are on X5. They tend to get wind knots at times also. Does X9 help with that as well as a cast-ability?

My home lake is all grass so I can usually get away with fishing braid most of the year, unless they do a huge weed-kill then a respool is required.

Great Topic... I only use braid for my top waters and I counter act the "lack of stretch" by switching to a Medium power/ fast action rod. I can get long casts and great hook-ups. There isn't any grass on my home lake... so no other reason to use braid.

Man both these lines have been great since they came out. I use them in the same fashion. Just had a good conversation with our pro staff guys over at dem jigs this last week about it. Was also wondering on your braid to buzzbait set up. I've tried various lines and rods. I've found my best results have been with X9 35lb and a 7-3 mh fast action.. A vid on why you use other lines would be cool.

Great explanation! Was it really that windy today on Rayburn? I had the weather channel up all day, and never saw the wind get much more than 13MPH !....likely good for some, but not for others, just hope it all works out! ....get the same sack with a good kicker!

Matt thank you for the videos. What line do you recommend for spinning reels? If it's fluro please advise which one. I struggle with fluro on spinning reels. Wind knots , tangles , falling of the reel. Good luck this season.
He most likely uses the x9 braid because it's a better casting braid he uses it for finnese baits like spinning technique he uses the x5 only for grass baits like punching frogging etc but the x9 is better for spinning rods get smoother further cast knots are better so u can use lighter lines and it goes through guides alot better
I use 10lb X9 for most spinning applications with a fluorocarbon leader.

Having problems with win nuts using power pro 15 pound I have a size 3000 real 7 foot rod I threw a lot of generals but end up with terrible wind knots, Any ideas that may help

I have found that I get less wind knots and tip wrap ups when using the 5 strand. 9 strand is almost too supple for my drop shot and light finesse applications.

Does fishing line have a shelf life when stored in the original packaging
if stored at room temperature it will be good for a LONG time
When you're spooling all your reels with different types of braid X9, X5 and different line weights how do you keep them straight? Are you marking the reels in some way? I get mine spooled and then I loose track of what line is on each reel. Does anyone else have this problem?
I have specific rods for techniques therefore i know which line i put on them

yes you can. one feels smooth and the other is course. Im not sure what power pro is but id guess its a 5 strand since it feels course. higher strands feel like silk

Nice job breaking down braided line , I feel a leader line is the most optimal way too fish , only drawback is you need too learn a FG knot. You can leave your reel sitting for moths at a time with out having too respooling it where’s if your only using fluorocarbon you’ll need too waist all that line and respool that right there is a major reason why my reels are all spooled with braid with an FG knot to a 20 FG leader 10 ft leader hell a 50 ft leader doesn’t matter I want too frog fish cut the leader off tie a frog on or just have a rod specific too frog fish

Lately, there seems to be a the opinion of many anglers that braided line must always have a FC leader. I have always been of the opinion that in “dirty” water with lots of vegetation and laydowns and other junk floating around in the water, the bass really doesn’t recognize braided line as anything other than, all the other junk floating around in the water. I remember reading the great Doug Hannon talking about how the fish’s eyesight doesn’t follow a single line when it has other intersecting lines, such as weed stems or tree branches crossing it. They also can’t make sense of a broken line with alternating contrasting colors a certain intervals. There are certain fishing lines on the market that take advantage of this concept.

I use braid straight on all my rods. Finesse is 15 lb and everything else is 30 lb, my flipping and pitching is 65 lb. I have no problems, breaks, or fish losses. Braid is smaller than fluoro, so more line on finesse reels. I do not use inline spinners on braid, that will mess it up even with a swivel. Yes I'm a bass fisherman, sometimes I fish trout and have caught tons of trout with 65 lb braid, and you know how well trout can see, so point being is its not the line but action of the lure! Tight lines.

I think I understand but my main thing is I got a 81 Daiwa to Tooele tournament edition drag series and I have 60 pound power pro on a 7 foot triad boy duck it and I use that for throwing my big rats my expensive baits my expensive tapwater baits and of course what you told me to throw a punch through the heavy vegetation with my brain for jigging with my swim jig but don’t they make a lower finesse breed because I get all different types of reactions from people that are throwing 16 pound 20 pound floral and I’m just throwing 12 pound big game Berkely and to be honest without the breed on my Colorado last year I don’t believe I would’ve landed my 8 lbs. 9 oz. largemouth

I bought the X5 and I'm impressed with it try to for pitching and flipping and it does the job felt the bites instantly tried spiderwire stealth braid it's not worth the money do not buy the stealth braid

In bass fishing, you don't need braid ever, except maybe for pitching. Only in striper fishing do you need it for braid to mono at the highest poundages. In that, you are seeking the 40's with lures. As for bass, long distance is not needed. Braid will snap even at 65 lbs, esp when bail closes on you or why it frays or fades or why you break by hand on hung ups, so technically, it's trash. Plus, you need stretch in proper fishing...that's why you still need that mono leader for the big stripers. Even in bottom rigging techniques, you'd want a floating line for most applications so the braid will be obsolete there. On some bottom fish like carp, they will avoid braid. Peopke ask, why bring up carp when we're talking bass? For starters, I say bc they are fish. Make the connections. People think I talk down on fishermen. Trust me that you will never get on mi level and I haven't even begun to clown anyone. You're lucky I even take the time to give you a hint. Don't have time for this, but I'm a promoter should you not understand me. I'm not here to be famous or make friends. It's all about the papers for me.
