I'm old, and you taught me something new, thanks.
Cole and Jay.. Really appreciated that class in spooling and knotting braided line. Would appreciate later a tutorial on planting wildflowers and milkweed along with your butterfly 🦋 hatchery!
I've tried and tied a LOT of different knots with braid, but I've never heard of the Alberto knot. Certainly gonna give that a try. Looks like an awesome knot. Thanks for sharing.
Very helpful. Never saw the Alberta knot before
I've never heard of a Alberto knot and surely going to do this on next fishing expedition! Thanks Cole!
YOU ROCK COLE AND JAY!
You become more humble when you learn from the Pro's. Excellent tutorial.
Good job ,thank you.
Thank you for this! Learned how to add a lead line! Have a good one.
Good info 🎣
Thank you so much! Great info and demonstration!!
Great video,,,exactly as I do it even for ice fishing!!!!!! Thank you for showing others!!!!!!
This is exactly what I needed to know. I’ll be happy to watch it. ✌️😷
wow looks like i learned how to tie a new knot thanks cole
Thanks! I’ll probably watch this multiple times!
Thanks Cole, this was really helpful.
Thanks for the info Cole!
Tape backing has never failed me! And i catch some big fish
Nice!!!
Thank you for this video, just started using braid and you just made my change over easier. Great video
Cool now I know a little more about it thanks cole
I learned something have tried it a couple of times on my spinning reels will try what works for you all. Thanks
Thank you sir, I enjoy videos like this, how to 👍👍👍
Thanks Cole. Great information. Please say hi to Jay, and your care package is on the way !!!
I didn't know that, now I do. Thanks Cole
Great content. This is what i need
Thank for that Helpful Tip 👍👍
Wooooo, where do I begin??? Congratulations on the new baby news. That ultrasound was unbelievable! They've come a long way from just a short time ago. I enjoyed the video tutorial. Honestly, I spool my reel with my cordless screw gun. I cover the auto- chuck with electric tape then fit the spool on it, line up the spool and guide it on by my hand. I've done it for years and I'm really fast at it. Also, this past year I lined my baitcasters with braid as well. I love it!!!! But I did make one observation that I didn't expect. When the temperature drops really low, your braided line will freeze up. That's not good for strength and I found out first hand. I'm going to purchase another 7' spinning rod for one of my Daiwa Whiskers SS 1300s. Wrap the grip as I always do & this year see if I can break my PB which is the cover picture on my old page"Raging Bassaholics" on facebook. I don't have it activated anymore but that's another story. I have a 2 in all my prayers. Hope to see you 2 soon. This year I'm hitting some more lakes, like Lake Conway, Austell, Norfork, & Horseshoe. Got some brand new baits from Megabass, 6th Sense & Zman. I know it's going to be awesome!!! Much love to you both and God bless
Learned a bunch, really appreciate it. Great video
Amazing tip!!! You should do one a month!!! Knot tie, lure care, knife sharping!!! Just a few ideas!!!
Knife sharpening needs to be done properly; which I know how to do! !🌞🔪🌞!
There are gadgets to use but I don't need to use any!
I don't use "electric" knives.
I love your new backgrounds it looks really nice and bright! love you guys so much you are both so amazing
Thank you, I've always wondered how this was done.
Awesome 😎
Learned something new brother. Like the way you put the lines together. Stay warm and peace.
I'm late in my comments here, but I absolutely love these videos. We all can use refresher courses and updates on new products and stuff. Please don't change the way y'all do videos. I've watched a lot of fishing show in my life, but y'all put them to shame. 👍😎
Great information
Well done. Great video with excellent information. One suggestion is that I have seen one or two videos where the speaker is using very heavy line, just so it is easier to see how to tie the knot. They will get a couple of pieces of 80lb mono, put them on a black background. The results are very easy to see the knot tying process. I just started using braid last year and really enjoy the smooth feel of the line. Again, great video.
Yeah! In the future if we make specific knot tying videos we will do something like that to make it more clear! Thank you!!
Thanks Cole
Great video
Love the vid, 'm like the other old guys in the comments and learned something. I would like to see more of this kind of instruction, I also live and fish in Ar. on Bull Shoals and the White, but beyond that I go north in the winter for ice fishing and would like see something on organization. I look at ice, river and lake tackle and my brain takes on a bait caster birds nest effect, please show something on organizing, thank you.
Excellent. More of this type please. How about crappie condos?
Well, you can teach an old dog new tricks. I never knew much about braided line. I know more now. Thanks Cole! I think you and Jay could do more "How To" vids. Question: What's Jay craving in the third trimester? When my wife was in the third trimester with our son, she was craving cheeseburgers. Not fast food, but cheeseburgers out on the grill. And I was grilling cheeseburgers about 4 times each week! And ice cream. LOTS of ice cream! Now, he's just turned 18 and I still have to get ice cream for his craving. Runs in both sides of the family.
Lol, My wife craved Taco Bell, but she usually wanted it about midnight, back then Taco Bell was a 30 min ride for me, and most nights she would be asleep by the time I returned. After about a half dozen times, I got smart and started grabbing Taco Bell around 11pm, happy wife, happy life. So I can definitely relate
@@kelvintjonessr8594 It pays to plan ahead! Yes sir!
Thank you!
Thank you for watching!!!!
Nice info, I think the electrical tape trick is for the tape to go on first, and then it be a place for the braid to sit and sinch. I think there are also some reel with a built on pad on spool for braid to hug.
i've never used backing.. but think about it. I go all the way braid with flouro leader from lure to just until the reel and keep fishing 'till there is not enough braid to make the long casts i like
Thank you
that knot looks impossible for arthritic fingers . but i will try it . thanks cole . you taught me something
Good video, informative
Thanks Danny! Glad you enjoyed it!
Like that knot.
It’s a good one!
Interesting info love & hugs stay safe see you next time
Add a small drop of fast drying super glue to your knots. Been doing this for 30 years. Definitely adds strength to all kinds of knots. Try it. Costs very little.
I wind my line Three times, not less, around any spool then tie a uniknot or figure eight knot on there.
Both knots start differently but have the same figure 8 shape, before pulling tight!
My line will knot slip around on the spool, if it comes down to that!
I found that in pulling the knot down onto a spool, pull from side to side, sliding down! That is to even the tension on both line sections below the knot! Pulling straight down, will cause the knot to pop!,- doesn't matter how perfectly knot is tied, as I found!
I have old centre pin reels and some Australian Alvey side cast center pin reels, witch I tie on like that!
Alvey reels are imported into USA!
I use same knots to join various lines; and onto swivels/hooks etc!
With thinner lines, I double the line before tying whatever, have to be more careful in forming the loops!
I always make three loops, or four, never less than three; more when using thinner lines! Every coil formed in the/my finished knot must be next to each other; is supporting each coil for knot strength!
I only use nylon/mono.
Catch a bigger'un!
(Yes, do more how to videos!)
!🌞🎣🐟🐠🐠🐟🎣🌞!
Awesome! Thanks for all your input! Will be making more vids like this in the future!
! The spool knot IS Very Important! It is the base, formation of the line!
Their are other knots for tying any line onto any spool, than what I've mentioned works for me!
Tying over loops like that on spool are not that reliable!
Loops of line over each other will cut through there, when pressure is applied, causing knot failure much quicker! Popper knots will take much more strain before popping!
Test that knot on a broom handle as example, it won't take much to pop 8 & 10 pound line for sure!
Example, a lot of line has been removed from a full spool for whatever reason! -
angler hooks into a big enough fish, especially from the sea shore, it may swim out further taking line down to the spool! Line pops off weaker "knot!"
I have seen and replaced inferior spool knots often, when checking line on used reels.
Also, on some cheaper rod/reel combination sets, sold new, the spool "knot" is just a basic tie on, pulls off easily!
Choice of line and knots is up to the angler!
!🎣🐟🐠🦈🐠🐟🎣!
Enjoyed the video here , hope Jay is doing good , keep up the great videos
That's very informative, thanks Cole. We idiot newcomers don't know this stuff, thanks again. Hugs to Jay
Nice
Well done thats the same way I've done it for years
Have to tried the FG knot for your braid or leader? It runs super smooth through your last eyelets. I use it when I’m at home before going out but then when out I use the same Alberto Knot you just showed because the FG is more challenging to tie. Keep how’s coming. Be sure to be extremely detailed (e.g. which way the line should come off the spool) because when I was learn all that stuff was super helpful. You should do a bait-caster next!
Yeah I really like the FG knot too but it is definitely a more difficult knot that I figured most probably wouldn’t want to spend time tying. We appreciate your feedback and I think we will be incorporating vids like this weekly!
FG knot is FAR superior to all other knots! Definitely should have been mentioned.
That's down right kool as a fan coletrain
Great video homie!! I need spinning rod lessons !
Thanks! I’m not the best teacher, but I’ve been wanting to put some basic how-to/ helpful content on here for awhile now!
Newer sub. Love your videos, but this is extremely helpful. Would love to see a video on rod and reel combinations for various species of fish.
Thank you for this episode! I’ve always wanted to know the correct way to put on my line. How’s Jay and that baby doing? God Bless! My husband and I love your show!
Yay!
Sounds good. I'm still in the dinosaur days. Like crappie and trout, light mono was what was desired, so 4-6# test. Now, braid, doesn't sound like an issue.
But, spraying the reel with WD-40 was supposed to be good for the reel, but was supposed to be good to get bites. That I do not know. Then offshore workers used WD-40 on their knees.😉
Braided line sometimes freezes up a bit in the eyelets on my rods during winter weather. I've tried putting some Vaseline, light oil, WD-40, etc on the eyelets but with variable success. You guys may not run into this much if at all in your fishing adventures but if you hear of anything to help alleviate this problem let us know. Thanks so much for sharing all your insights on gear and tactics, very helpful!
Yes! I forgot to mention that as a disadvantage. I have used reel magic to try to keep it from freezing, but I’ve gotten to where if it’s going to be below freezing all day, then I’ll just use straight mono or fluoro.
@@COLE_and_JAY little late , 4 mo. I guess being late is better than not at all .best , if there is such a thing I've used for frozen eyelets,
Pam. Spray cooking oil . Off brands work also . As your fishin
Give em" a "little" shot every so often ..
C.J.C. best wishes ! Give the little man a high five , hugs to u J. Oh geez don't want cole to get all "jelly" so a big hi five to u.
G-pa jeff
I do the same way except for putting the on the rile I made a device to hold the spool in place
Yep, fishing has been tough here in Ar. The trout are not biting on the Little Red. Nice vid. In future vid how about crayfish trapping/catching?
We plan on doing some crawfish trapping soon!
Looks like you need to add a spool shim. Notice how your line gathers more towards the front of the spool...add a shim. If it gathers more towards the rear...remove a shim. A lot of people never even pay attention to this detail but it makes a big difference on how your reel performs. You'll also be able to get more line on the spool if it's lying evenly on the spool. I over looked this issue for years. Some reels come with two shims. (little clear washer looking thingy's)
Good tip! It seems to be 50/50 with this reel at this point as to how evenly the line gathers up when I put new line on. When I notice it isn’t going on perfectly evenly I will spool a little extra line onto the spool and then run it out a couple of times to get it on there evenly. I’ve noticed that the unevenness happens when I have the spool closer to the reel when I am spooling it on. Thank you for your input!!!
C & J, -
Show us your old fishing tackle from when you were younger! 🎣-🎣
I’ve got a pretty good stash, but I pretty much used all of my old tackle until I lost it. Not many of my original baits remain lol
🔥🔥👍👍👍
👍🏻
Very helpful Cole and I appreciate it. The Alberto knot better for mono to braid than the double uni??? Just wondering if I should switch it up... thanks again
I think they are both great knots! For me, I think the Alberto makes a smaller knot and it’s honestly easier for me to tie! Lol
Can read my comment with this video!
There are lots of knots and lines to choose from!.... 🎣
Great informational video...would you recommend doing the same on a baitcaster or do you have a much better method?
I would do the same on a baitcaster, exceptI would have someone hold the spool of line vertically with some pressure so the line comes off the spool tight!
Enjoyed the video and some great info. Have you used a reel that has a spool ready for braid ? Just bought one like that so would it need a backing ?
I still would put a backing on it just to make sure!
I have a somewhat dumb but curious question. Can this be done on reels like zebco 33, small micro rigs, etc. I dont like open face reels personally so I was wondering if this can apply. Another question, does braided fray at all when it gets cut? Lastly, the leader is how long and what is your recommended weight on 10 lb braided? Thanks. Love the channel and info
You can definitely use braided line on a zebco. I’d recommend using 8-10lb braid. Braided line will fray when it runs against rough rocky surfaces like concrete walls, but it’s pretty strong. When you cut it with scissors it doesn’t really fray up on the end. Leader line length is usually dependent on how long your rod is. I don’t like for the leader knot going into the reel, so I generally make my leader the length to where when I reel my lure up to the end of my rod to cast the knot is just above the reel. Approximately 6-8ft. And you can use whatever pound test line you want for leader, but 6-10lb mono or fluoro works best on 10lb braid!
What size fishing line do you recommend for catfish
In the 70s, we would put the bare end of the line in the water behind our boat while on our way to the fishing spot. We would let out the full spool behind us and then reel it back in. No more line twist!
Oh, with the equipment that I use now, I can cast far enough to do it your way. Don't have to be in the boat to do it. Back then, a 5500C was the best reel I'd ever heard of and the only spinning reel we ever used was a Mitchel 300. But,..... I loved every minute of it. Great video, and it brought back some great memories of fishing with my dad.
We’ve definitely used that method to get line twist out! It works great!
Hey Cole thanks for the tip on how to put line on a spinning reel. My question is to put line on a bait caster, does the spool of line come off clock wise or counter clock wise.
You actually want for the spool to be vertical and for there to be pressure on both sides of the spool for best results when spooling line on a bait caster!
@@COLE_and_JAY thank you very much.
Great video. Do you use the same knot on the other end ? I mostly river fish and have always wanted to try braid.
Yes! I use the same knot to attach a leader to the braid! There are way better videos on RUclips that could give you a better look at how to tie the Alberto knot!
👍
As a former machinist/quality control inspector. The 0.04 difference is a lot! Not quite 1 millimeter!
COLE MY GREANDPA WAS A FIREFIFGHTER HE SHOWED ME 30 WAYS TO TIE KNOTS ,
I ONLY RMEMEBR 6 , I NEED BRAIDED LINE
Good info! Thanks for sharing. I will have to try braided line sometime, I've never used it before. On a different note, I have sent some packages (thinking that they were coming USPS but they are coming UPS) & they are saying that they attempted delivery. They don't deliver to PO boxes. If I give you the tracking numbers, can you call them & give UPS an alternative physical delivery address? It would be private (between them & y'all, not public). I didn't realize that Amazon was sending them via UPS.
Thank you! And yes for sure! If you could message the tracking numbers to us on our Cole and Jay Facebook page that would be great and we will give them a call and give them another address!
@@COLE_and_JAY Awesome! Thank you!
@@COLE_and_JAY sent them to your messenger
What is your reason for using white?
My biggest bugaboo is the curl that sets so easily into mono. Does braid prevent that?
Braid has zero memory and doesn’t curl up!
Thanks Cole. Great tips. Love you and Jay and can't wait to see baby Harkin! Do you have a name yet?
I have a question. How long of a leader line do you put on your braided line?
I usually run around an 8-10ft leader. This length keeps the leader knot out of your reel. If I’m fishing really clear water I will sometimes make the leader longer!
My error , my math is wrong. Brought the spool in 1973. 47 years.🤣
Missed seeing Jay. Tell her please.
can you say happy brithday to clara pls
That`s not the knot I tie but I`m going to try it I like the looks of it .
George Marshall made the comment that I would have made.
Ron Lannoo
Can't use it until we know if it's approved by the slab queen!
She uses it in every video lol 😂
Love braid but im a power pro kind of guy
Nothing wrong with it! Thanks for watching!
@@COLE_and_JAY thanks and still finishing lol
And this whole time I thought I had a bunch of fishing tackel lol.
I’ve got somewhat of a stash lol I still have a lot of stuff that I had when I was kid 😂
I still use a 30 year old spool of 12 lb. mono. Haven’t lost a fish yet.
I love braid, I don't believe fish know what line is? Look at fly line should spook them, see I don't buy it. I never tie a leader, defeating all the advantage of braid in the first place.
Cole I like your vid on braid. not trying to be a smartass know it all, but line dia. is .005 not 0.05. 0.05 is just shy of 1/16 th of an inch. just passing knowledge. jay looks good with that pregnant glow. best of luck to you both, and the third. wally
Are you selling X9 , or showing how to spool
You were using a surgens knot to start line on reel
:)
in sry cole ,but im not dishing out 200 dollars for a rod . that just seems crazy to me . im with you on the braid tho. just me
There are a lot of really nice rods out there! Definitely do not have to spend that much to get a nice one!
I'm still using my Rhino rods! Love them!
I use a Zebco rod & it's my favorite of my 30+ rods lol.
I really don't see what the what the advantage is to braided line you got to put it on the back end and you got to put it on front end when you catch your fish in your reel it in you should do braided doesn't have any stretching with the monofilament line that you have on for a leader in a back-end does so I really don't see what your game and it would take me a long time to put the leader on and your mama a monofilament line you put a a heavy or heavy one or strong test you're still going to have the problem with the mono line stretching I hope I wrote this three times I'm not going to go back to just kind of fill in the blanks you guys have a good day
