Damn the quality of LTT videos have increased so rapidly. Wasn't long ago when they were just unboxing boxes, reading the spec sheet and recording it all with a smartphone.
I'm still rocking these 7 years later, while I now have stuff that absolutely blow these out of the water in the sound quality department these are the comfort KING and sound just fine for voice chatting in games.
I've got the 558's. Had them for maybe 6 years. Still sound as great as they were when I got them. Despite how many times They've fallen from the edge of my desk they are still perfect. No cracked no breaks, it's surprising actually! I found an old huge home stereo receiver and hooked them up to that through my pc and they sound amazing.
I've slept with the hd 598 every night for 4 years now. It's that comfortable. I've also worn it for at least 8 hours a day almost everyday for those 4 years as well. I probably have a little over 20,000 hours on them and they haven't failed to amaze me yet. I also have the hd 650 but you need a really good DAC and amp to power it and get full potential so you can't really bring it anywhere with you unless you buy a higher priced portable DAC and amp
Also these are amazing for gaming, which is the reason I bought them and they are great for female vocals as well. I've tried so many gaming headphones, but gaming headphones are all like beats, garbage overpriced marketed bad quality headphones that break so easily. Only thing somewhat lacking with the 598 is the bass. But it's an open ear headphone with amazingly wide soundstage so there are trade offs
+Solid Spider you don't? Before I had over the ear headphones I used to sleep with in ear ones but they would always hurt my ears. I watch RUclips and listen to music when I'm in bed. I fall asleep so fast watching RUclips videos I always have to rewatch them when I wake up lol
I've been using these as my main headphones for the last 5 years and they are awesome - great build quality, sound amazing, and you don't need an amp to drive them.
What's up with this talk about HD 598 SE not checking as genuine on Sennheiser website's authenticity check page? I just read a few posts by some people who received their Black Friday purchase from Amazon.
+Kato Boii Some people are inputting their ID incorrectly. You have to enter the plain text ID first, and then it will prompt the holographic ID. The website doesn't make this very clear.
I've had the OG colorway 598's for almost a year now and they're still just as amazing as they were when I got them out the box. In both sound and comfort.
I've had my HD 598's for almost 4 years now and still love them as much as the day I took them out of the box. If you are even just thinking about getting these, do yourself a favor and get them. Seriously the best headphones you can get at this price point!
I have had the regular 598s for 17 months now and they are STILL rock solid and sound even better from when I first put them on day 1. I got them at around $180 on Amazon, so for those that got the non-black one for I think it was $99, just won the headphone game since THAT price is a steal!
I have a pair of 558s I bought last Christmas, I love them to DEATH! Very similar to these in build and sound, bought them because the 598s weren't on sale, but I'm loving them all the same
Good for gaming or nah? i play intermediate counter-strike if it matters. looking for some headphones without a mic on them because I've already got an AT2020
Spazzys beyers only please a really narrow market of headphone users really, the treble is really harsh at points, but i'd say go with 598 if you don't like treble canons, and you don't want to buy an amp for your headphones. I'm saving up for sennheiser hd650's atm, according to reviews those are exactly what i'm looking for. BTW best way to know how good 598's are check a channel called "Z reviews" and his review of 598's.
I can't watch that guy's reviews, he takes forever to explain things in a meandering and vague way that sounds like he keeps forgetting what he's doing.
have them for almost 3 years now and I can't stress enough hpw comfortable, and amazing they are...even with my glasses I the pads still give the proper clamp and feel comfy for hours (that velour padding works great except for some hot days)....the sounds are just phenomenal, tight bass, great sounding mid and amazing trebles..getting the modmic soon as well
I purchased these on black Friday on Amazon for $95! I'm very pleased with them. The only thing now is get a good DAC/AMP for my computer to experience them to the fullest. They do sound pretty good without an amp, but I know they will sound even better once I get one.
Anyone pick up one of these SE's for $95 on amazon during the black friday event? HD700 are also worth picking up now, $499 when originally went for closer to $999.
I am a (self-claimed) audiophile with more than 5 years in this hobby, trying a lot's of headphone from cheap earbuds to $1000++ headphone, and to be honest, the HD598 ( and HD650 ) are one of my all time favorite.
Sennheiser HD 555 FTW! ;) This headphones served me for almost 8 years now and they still rocks! Just this minor crack on both sides, but it's only visual. I don't know much about new models but if they make them the same quality as old ones then I truly recommand Sennheiser products.
When I first joined the audiophile scene, I thought that clarity was going to be king for me. I thought I wanted something exciting and fun... but what I ended up enjoying more was the HD 598s. Now I know what you’re thinking “what do you mean it’s not exciting?! What do you mean it’s not clear!?” No no, you misunderstand. The HD 598s do not strive for top clarity, nor do they strive to be exciting. They do something that no other headphone I have owned has done. They made me enjoy every second of them. Never have I ever enjoyed wearing a pair of headphones so much. They not only feel so fricking comfortable, but they have that nice theater like sound that makes you feel like you’re in a high quality movie where sound just cradles your head. I know this is personal opinion and all, but I know what I like, and these headphones are just that.
I have a pair of HD600s and they were a fantastic purchase, I use them every day for everything, listening to music (obviously) gaming, films and podcasts, they’re so comfortable I can wear them for hours without feeling fatigue, amazing headphones only downside is the high impedance so I can only use them with an amplifier
I've had the HD598s for about two years and they're simply fantastic. they are still as good as new in regards to the plastic (no cracks at all in the plastic) and are incredibly confortable. super light as well, you can barely tell you are wearing them after a while and have beautiful sound. I use them with a FiiO E07K Andes portable DAC/AMP combo that doubles as an external USB sound card and I just can't recommend them enough. Spectacular headphones, especially for the price. there is simply no better headphone for under $300(us)
I'm on my 2nd pair of HD 595's in 8 years and recommend you don't forget that you placed them on your seat. I've sat on these things at least twice already, ran over the damn cord a few times and snapped some of the plastic, but some tape is more than enough. $150 is what I paid for each of these and its a steal. My next will be hd650's with the mayflower. Linus review this setup.
Been using my HD 598s daily for years now. I even leave a pair at work in my office that I wear all day long. They're so comfortable that sometimes I forget that I have them on. (I have a pair of Astro A50s, but they get uncomfortable after ~30-60 minutes.) The HD 598s are the best headphones I've ever bought.
I recently got the HD598 and wow, these don't only sound great but also are really comfortable. But now I have the feeling I may need some DAC(although my old iPod seems to get them to sound nice on high volume settings). I just have no idea how the FiiO E10k and the Creative E5 compare to each other in terms of sound. The E5 is expensive but also much more versatile, while the E10k seems to be recommended pretty often.
+SaHaRaSquad They definately need a dac/amp combo if you have a need for loud listening, and mind that these are super light on the bass even amped. The soundstage is insane and they're freaking awesome for gaming (you hear eeeeeeverything).
I got the Ath M50x on Black Friday for 125€, and still think they're the best bang for the buck. They're super confortable, portable and the sound quality is amazing, 100% recommended
The 598s are an amazing set of cans. If you're just getting into high end audio, or you just want a good set of headphones, get these and a DAC/AMP like the E10k. These are also great for gaming because of the great soundstage. Unfortunately since they're open backed, I dont recommend wearing them in public. Sound will bleed through to you from the outside, and your music will is able to be heard to everyone around you as if you're playing it low on your smartphone. The comfort is amazing as well. They're a tad bright imo, but it's still a pleasurable listening experience. If you're getting into the entire "audiophile" thing and wanna stay on a budget, these cans are probably the most expensive you'll buy and ever need. You can get the SEs (which I recommend since they come with the 'normal' 1.2m 3.5mm cable) for about $130 on ebay. The E10k is $70, so for $200 you can get an amazing listening experience, as well as an amazing gaming experience. If you play CS:GO or COD, these will definitely help you due to the wide soundstage. BUT, if you're getting into the entire audiophile thing and know you wont be able to resist the urge to buy another pair of cans within at least a 2 year period, I recommend buying the HD600s. Yea I know, they're expensive, but hear me out. The 600s are probably the best open back headphones under $500. Even though the 650s are a little better, it's not worth the $100 difference in price imo. A good DAC/Amp with the 600s will keep you set forever basically. You can find 600s for around $270 on ebay or headfi forums too. TL;DR if you can get the 598s for less than $140, or if you bought them on amazon for $99 - Congrats, you made an amazing purchase if you are just getting into headphones or want a high quality pair of cans. I recommend picking up the E10k and you'll be set for an amazing listening and gaming experience. If you think that you may be tempted to buy another pair withing 2 years of purchasing the 598s, get the HD 600s and the E10k. Even though it's more money up front, in the long run the 600s are the only pair you truly need for at-home listening. I dont recommend the 600s for gaming though.
HD595 owner hurr.. i've beaten these things up and they have kept up with me for over 4 years :) sound great and are plenty loud when driven by my mobo onboard amp. Open ear means you can wear em all day and not get warm ears, great sound stage as well.
I have owned a pair of these for about 2 years, and the thing about the Sennheiser "veil" is that you can crank up all of your music all the way, without ever hearing painfully sharp treble, which is the only thing I disliked about the Beyerdynamic lineup. (Also I was using a 200 dollar DAC listening to uncompressed music)
+Radical Moose Limb Certainly a legit criticisms. DT990 Pros will need an amp to properly drive them, while HD598 will benefit from it, but wont need it. Sennheiser's in general tend to be more neutral. I personally like Beyerdynamic "house sound" more. They have emphasis on lows and highs, though depending on your amp they are not quite as trebly as Grados are.
Ordered my HD598 SEs just Friday for 99€ on Amazon during Cyber Monday week. Seemed like a good deal, they're probably gonna arrive tomorrow and I can't wait!
I used these for 2 years until the lack of detail during very fast songs became an issue I could not ignore anymore, so I ended up upgrading to a pair of Beyer T90's with an O2+ODAC. Great headphones for people that aren't SUPER picky but still have some decency in their ears. :)
My all honest opinion after using these headphones for about 3 years (while keeping in mind that they're my first and only higher end headphones): - The headband started coming off on one side because of the glue weakening. - The cord contact part is crackling and a little corroded which is kinda interesting because the cord's jack is gold plated (maybe the inside part on the headphone isn't). - The earpads are stiffening up, not as comfortable and "plushy" anymore but they're still not that bad. - I could use just a tad more bass. + With these you don't need an external amp to be able to listen to music properly. + The sound quality is absolutely fantastic. I love how sometimes I can even hear the compressor kicking in on a singer's voice track. + The soundstage is unbelieveable. You can hear the place of every instrument exactly well. Binaural test stuff is also scaringly realistic because of this. + I believe these headphones give a quite close representation of the original recordings no matter what songs you throw at them. Contrary to Linus, though, for me lower quality music is absolutely annoying to listen to and every little error and detail that the studio slipped over comes out even in high quality music. But this is by no means an error, this represents how detailed these babies sound. + The size adjust plastic isn't cracking at all and it still works precisely. Would I buy them again? This is a hard question. I probably won't because I would go for something even higher end. But these are unbeatable for me at this (new, even lower) price point.
Damn the quality of LTT videos have increased so rapidly. Wasn't long ago when they were just unboxing boxes, reading the spec sheet and recording it all with a smartphone.
haha ikr!!
+BroMM those were better though
+BroMM rec with potato*
+BroMM Except for the wire hanging on his right side :P
+BroMM
They actually haven't done any of what you've described, in.... 2 or 3 years, or more?
Literally just bought these headphones on black friday. Awesome.
My friend said they were uncomfortable so he sold them to me for 20 dollars I wanted these for 2months and they are better than I thought.
+A. Plus 190 euros in finland :/
+wild_shark why is every tech product so expensive in finland ?
+joemay5 I bought used HD555s for 40€ :)
+joemay5 Same!
Owner of HD 598's. Can confirm, they're fantastic.
I'm still rocking these 7 years later, while I now have stuff that absolutely blow these out of the water in the sound quality department these are the comfort KING and sound just fine for voice chatting in games.
Like what? I'm thinking that I should upgrade from them to sth new.

The AKG K7xx are my favorite cans, comfort-wise. But the DT990 600ohm are my favorite, sound-wise so far.
lol noone knew about you 4 years ago props for coming up in the youtube competition mad respect bro
I didn’t know they had a 600 ohm model, is the bass good? I get this is really late but
Sennheiser>Potatoes>iPhone headphones>Beats
+Viet Lee iPhone headphones are great for its price
+Viet Lee Beyerdynamics DT 880 2005 Edition > all
Bot Blyat Find any better ones for the same price?
+Bot Blyat Actually watch teksyndicate video on budget headsets.
Bot Blyat Apple Earpods are relatively cheap for the quality you get
I've slept with the hd 598 every night for 4 years now. It's that comfortable. I've also worn it for at least 8 hours a day almost everyday for those 4 years as well. +MichaelV You... sleep with headphones?
+Solid Spider of course... who doesn't?...
+Solid Spider you don't? Before I had over the ear headphones I used to sleep with in ear ones but they would always hurt my ears. I watch RUclips and listen to music when I'm in bed. I fall asleep so fast watching RUclips videos I always have to rewatch them when I wake up lol
+Solid Spider it also helps that my hd 598 is softer than my pillow
The Noctua fan guy made me laugh :D
1:11 2012 Linus looks so different
yup
+skil3z He finally hit puberty :P
+Ryan Whitlock He's still going through it.
+skil3z in 2011 he look just like Eminem ^_^
+Kaddour Kaabouche Nah the Linus at 0:28 is the stunt double.
I own these and I love them
+Will Leonard Same here :)
+Julian R same! :)
Got the lower end HD558s and I love them aswell
HD 558's here (basically the same) so I can confirm.
+Will Leonard I've got the 558s, and despite the use and wear on them visually, they still perform as solid as the day I took them out of the box.
GG Sennheiser with the release of the Black HD 598's. They look beautiful
dear people: please don't use open back headphones on public transport
why?
morad mohamed because open back is used for casual listening at home plus open back allows sound leaked for better quality
I do and idgaf lol 😂
Everybody hopes you get smitten
They're actually a lot safer for your ears because if theres someone getting murdered you would be able to hear in public and call the police.
I've been using these as my main headphones for the last 5 years and they are awesome - great build quality, sound amazing, and you don't need an amp to drive them.
Had these headphones for 3 years now and they haven't let me down :)
What's up with this talk about HD 598 SE not checking as genuine on Sennheiser website's authenticity check page? I just read a few posts by some people who received their Black Friday purchase from Amazon.
+Kato Boii If you buy the SE from Amazon directly, it is legit. I've personally spoken to Sennheiser about it.
+Kato Boii Some people are inputting their ID incorrectly. You have to enter the plain text ID first, and then it will prompt the holographic ID. The website doesn't make this very clear.
+LinusTechTips linusamazontips
+Bradley4747 listening to em right now. :)
+Kato Boii Just make sure the shipper is Amazon. I think the fake ones were fulfilled by Amazon but from some other provider.
These so far have given me the best version of listening to them for Goodbye yellow road ever
Pls do a review on the HD598 CS. It's a new release and is a closed back version of the normal ones.
i agree, i just ordered those but there's not many reviews out for them so im not sure what to expect.
I just want to know whether the hd598 cs are the same as the hd 569.
They are amazing man I will tell you as a Musician and coming from the HD 380 Pro's Best headphones I've had.
fxrsniper1 i just got my 598 cs in the mail yesterday and i really like them
Cody Me to lol
The SE look exactly like the 558. I have them and they are AMAZING.
I've had these for a year now and I had no idea you could take out the aux cord
DT 990 pro here. I couldn't be happier with it.
Im here because of todays insane amazon sale
I've had the OG colorway 598's for almost a year now and they're still just as amazing as they were when I got them out the box. In both sound and comfort.

I've had my HD 598's for almost 4 years now and still love them as much as the day I took them out of the box. If you are even just thinking about getting these, do yourself a favor and get them. Seriously the best headphones you can get at this price point!
Linus, why was this not uploaded at 4am?
I have had the regular 598s for 17 months now and they are STILL rock solid and sound even better from when I first put them on day 1. I got them at around $180 on Amazon, so for those that got the non-black one for I think it was $99, just won the headphone game since THAT price is a steal!
Quit trying to compare these to the m50x's, these win by a billion.
I've had these for the last 2.5 years and they are going strong paired nicely with my Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card.
Bayerdynamic DT 770 pro's are the best in it's class, even little cheaper than these sennheisers at least where I live.
+Ville Nummisalo beyerdynamic ftw
+MHWGamer i love my custom one pro
+Ville Nummisalo I still prefer my Beyerdynamic DT-990 pro :D
+Ville Nummisalo Open vs closed though, not really comparable. These are much better for gaming while the DT770's have better bass.
+tijn143 770s are ideal for LANs though.
Got the 598 SE for $94 on Black Friday... Thanks for reaffirming my purchase, most comfortable headphones I've ever owned.
Philips Fidelio X2's blow all of these out of the water.
+StigmatiX Yeah and Stax SR-009 blows that out of the water. The X2 is much more expensive.
+StigmatiX
Got a pair for 180, they definitely do not dissapoint. However since amazon had these 99 its pretty hard to get better value for your money
tijn143 That's not even a fair comparison, at least mine are in the same market/price range.
StigmatiX Well yeah that's true, it was an excaggeration, but the $99 for the 598's is hard to beat.
Agreed. That is a great price for those.
I have a pair of 558s I bought last Christmas, I love them to DEATH! Very similar to these in build and sound, bought them because the 598s weren't on sale, but I'm loving them all the same
I listened to this on my HD558's I'm not cool enough for the HD598.
Got these pair of headphones over three years and still beats well.
I'm personally using a pair of Sennheiser HD 201 headphones, they're quite versatile and I got them fairly cheap (new) :P
I have had them for a year and they are the best ones I have ever owned (I haven't owned many headphones). There is practically no bass punch though
There's barely any bass on that tho
I bought a pair of these used in 2011 and am STILL using them now. If you're in the market, I cannot recommend these headphones enough!
Good for gaming or nah? i play intermediate counter-strike if it matters. looking for some headphones without a mic on them because I've already got an AT2020
amazing for gaming i hear footsteps before many others and can pinpoint easily.
+Im Radiant do you use 7.1 virtualization?
nah you dont need it trust me these have amazing soundstage
7.1 virtualisation is a marketing con.
ThatGuyJerome just get a headset instead, this doesn't have a mic
I just got the HD 598SE for 100$ on black Friday and i so happy you just made a video of them.
love the noctuna joke. perform great, but look hideous... at least they made a black version :)
I really don't see it, i think those hd598's are sexy. Ofc not as sexy as my dt990 pro black edition ^^
+Pona what's better beyerdynamic or senhiersers
Spazzys beyers only please a really narrow market of headphone users really, the treble is really harsh at points, but i'd say go with 598 if you don't like treble canons, and you don't want to buy an amp for your headphones. I love sennheser they are so comfortable and sound great. Never going back to any other brand.
Who's here because of black friday deals?
me, 1 year later
have them for almost 3 years now and I can't stress enough hpw comfortable, and amazing they are...even with my glasses I the pads still give the proper clamp and feel comfy for hours (that velour padding works great except for some hot days)....the sounds are just phenomenal, tight bass, great sounding mid and amazing trebles..getting the modmic soon as well
and finally XD a review from linus xD
> "Value" headphones
> $250
fuck this, I'm fine with my Pro 80's
+DrathVader These were for 90 on black friday
They were on sale on Amazon a few days ago for just over $100.
+DrathVader I got mine for $150 on amazon
+DrathVader 95 on amazon holla
+DrathVader I've got the Audio-Technica M40X. 100 bucks and not much worse than the M50X
i can't believe i started following you when you had only 49 subs i was the 50th,amazed how much this channel has progressed
that moment linus compares the hd598 to other headphones i already have like my hd555's, beyerdynamic dt990's and my akg k7xx. lol
Nathan McClymont favorite?
I purchased these on black Friday on Amazon for $95! I'm very pleased with them. The only thing now is get a good DAC/AMP for my computer to experience them to the fullest. They do sound pretty good without an amp, but I know they will sound even better once I get one.
I was disappointed that this video was about headphones and not makeup.
I always wear my Noctua suit to work. These fit in perfectly.
Anyone pick up one of these SE's for $95 on amazon during the black friday event?
HD700 are also worth picking up now, $499 when originally went for closer to $999.

Yea, that was pretty funny. Haha. Luckily, I got my hands on a black Noctua fan.
I actually got these headphones as a Christmas gift last year and let me tell you, they are amazing

they crack aftet 1 year

+SaHaRaSquad They definately need a dac/amp combo if you have a need for loud listening, and mind that these are super light on the bass even amped. The soundstage is insane and they're freaking awesome for gaming (you hear eeeeeeverything).
Younes Berrada I have no doubt that headphones costing 10x as much sound a bit better, who would have guessed. Send me a pair and I'll listen to them.
necrofin there is no Soundstage on them , they are shit , but they are ok for the price
This is so well detailed and that's how it should be!
I got the Ath M50x on Black Friday for 125€, and still think they're the best bang for the buck. They're super confortable, portable and the sound quality is amazing, 100% recommended
Wowwwwww such beautiful b-roll in this video. nice job brandon!
LOL, I loved the Noctua outfit, very very classy.
Bought the HD558 about 2 years ago and "foam moded" them. Incredible cans.
I'd rock the noctua fan outfit
Had some for 4 years. still perfect.
"Lacks the warm hug on my head" Bro, you got a small head. My 598's squeezed the shit out my head until i broke em in a little.
I've had the 598 for years, absolutely wonderful headphones! just picked myself up some momentums, very psyched to open them on Christmas!
+Radical Moose Limb In other words you can crank up to ear-damage levels without getting a warning :P
Steamrick not what i meant. ;)
+Steamrick Even after several straight hours I never get an ear ringing sound like everything else.
+Radical Moose Limb Am I the only one who read that like its pronounced "Birdemic"? lol
Ordered my HD598 SEs just Friday for 99€ on Amazon during Cyber Monday week. Seemed like a good deal, they're probably gonna arrive tomorrow and I can't wait!
Was genuinely excited about makeup videos by Linus.
Linus sounds great while wearing these
Yup just bought these to replace my G4ME ZEROs!! No need for the mic anymore and open back is SOOOO much nicer in games!
I used these for 2 years until the lack of detail during very fast songs became an issue I could not ignore anymore, so I ended up upgrading to a pair of Beyer T90's with an O2+ODAC. Great headphones for people that aren't SUPER picky but still have some decency in their ears. :)
i just get my hd 598 se this morning from amazon it cost in spain 100€, and its true it s a gooood deal,GOOOD JOB LINUS U MISS NOTHING BRO :)
Glad I finally grabbed a pair this black friday!!! 95$, what a deal!
Listening to this video on 598s
I was JUST thinking about getting these; epic timing and great video, Linus!
Nabbed the SE's when they were on sale. So awesome.
Linus and Luke make me laugh, they look like best best friends. Keep up the vids Linus
I'm personally using Pioneer's HDJ-2000-k and I freaking love them.
Thanks Linus, i'm really glas how well these headphones will fit onto my Stormtrooper Helmet. Really hits close home
My all honest opinion after using these headphones for about 3 years (while keeping in mind that they're my first and only higher end headphones):
- The headband started coming off on one side because of the glue weakening.
Just got these over Amazon and I must say that my ath-m40x killed it!
I just ordered the HD 598 SE! Thanks Linus!!!
Well Linus, you have just made Sennheiser make a sale, good job.
Nice to....hear about these. I'm incredibly happy with my Bose QC25
love the tardis used in the b-roll
