They’ve also got a greater variety of plastics, including colors and translucent sheets (which would let some RGB effects through, but not be a clear window into lazy cable management, just as an example).

Yeah, I like the idea but not every new case is $150, you can get crappy cases for like $25-30 brand new that are crappy like I said, but way better than this angle grinder monstrosity

My PC case currently has 3 HDD bays, aswell as room for up to 3 more CD drives (that's a lot of space). My PC case has absolutely no room for cable management. I mean it. the way it works is, you literally flip down the back side panel, screw the motherboard to it, and just flip it back up. My PC case also has a huge 140mm be quiet fan modded right into the middle of the transparent side panel. My PC case never caused me any problems, not for temps or else. My PC case looks jank, but is actually great.
I still have a beige, nickel plated plastic, scratched and faded clear side panel witch at one point had a dozen 80mm fans now modified to have only two 140mm fans. a random no name case I bought from a computer store in 2004 that surprisingly was open until COVID finally killed all their business.
You don't even have to use a case! Just hang it up on strings! 1. No better cooling option 2. No size limits for components 3. A non-budget, non-hotbox ATX case from the current era will last as far as can be forseen. You deserve a non-plain-steel case, darnit! (Void for broke students.)
If you have basic tools at home, refurbish a case might be a decent and fun project. You just don't have to chop it with precision of an axe like in this video
the message is that, if you have fairly good case now then there's little reason to buy new one, and if you buy new one now, don't buy another in 3 years, buy one in 30 years
Counter-Counterpoint: Anglegrinder + Acrylic or fine wire mesh+your moms pantyhose! Edit: That's not supposed to be a "yo moma" joke, those things are stretchy as heck and depending on how much you use you can cover a whole side panel window with it.
Counter counter point: toughened glass is an absolute menance and a mistake and plastic window (PMMA or polycarbonate) was the right way all along. And it's much easier to add a plastic window than to add some 5.25" bays! Also lots of older cases have a plastic window option. I am also of firm belief that windows should be tinted, but i mean you can just add smoke film from any auto parts store.
Same. I've been using the same case for my main rig for over a decade, a Corsair carbide air 540. I still have my previous main rig case, an Antec 902 v3.
Sold my R3 yeaaaaaars ago for around 20€. Got myself a R5 few years ago for also 20€. Great case with amazing value if you don't mind the look + size. A bit bulky but great for a budget nas case. Has 8 regular HDD slots, 2x2.5" SSD slots and psu in the bottom with tons of space and fan slots + noise blocking foam stuff all around. One of the peak Fractal cases in my mind.
I used to have CM Stacker 832 for a long time. It became too cramped so i bought Be Quiet Dark Base 900 five years ago. I still have the Stacker in my basement. Both have removable motherboard trays that is a must have feature to me.
Pro (contextual) tips: if you want vents or fans, it's much better to use a hole saw and fan grills. For acrylic, once you're halfway through you can drill the rest from the other side. For mobo, it's best to get a case with threaded (removable) stand-offs rather than stamped sheet metal. Be sure to unscrew any stand-offs that you don't need to avoid a short circuit. Or just find a free case with these features you want. If your power or hdd LEDs don't work, take it out and flip it 180°
The best investment case wise is getting a full tower or larger. You can do alot of things to update a case but there is no making up for a lack of space.
At least a full atx mid tower that can fit a full tower air cooler like the nh-d15 anyway. That gives you enough breathing room for a large number of components, including 3 fan gpus
@workinprogress8978 No, full tower. Mid tower has little to no expansion room especially once you reach the point of having more drives for storage. The most common problem I have run into on most mid tower cases is that once you get more than 2 drives you start to severely cut into your front intake and have to run your fans harder to compensate. A mid tower only works if you are willing to take a lot of long term compromises and give up a lot of flexibility in order to make your computer fit in a specific space.
It comes down to whether or not you'll become a data hoarder. As a non-hoarder, my mid-tower's (3) 2.5" + (1) 3.5" + (4) M.2 already seems crazy excessive to me. Or at some point you might as well make a separate NAS box. (Hmm, it could give my Thunderbolt header an actual purpose...)
3:35 "There's nowhere to mount case fans here..." Wait a minute! That Antec Solo case has a tray on which you can mount two 90 mm front fans. It appears to be missing on the item you bought. (Who would even remove that?)
@@TheGreatBobby that is unfortunately one of the risks of buying/picking up an old case. Years of use, especially with people who didn't want to upgrade the case initially, can cause the tabs that you use to mount to bend or snap off. This is especially true for mainly plastic cases without the rigidity of metal. There's also a high chance it got lost after disassembly or was transferred to a different case for more front fan mounting if they similarly went with a free or cheap case when upgrading.
I can't believe it. Some guy did a review of the Antec Solo case 6 years ago and he shows the front fan mounts at exactly 3:35, which is the exact same time as when Linus says there is no front fan mount on the case! What are the chances? (Link: ruclips.net/video/AStbq5RwRw8/видео.html)
@@GoneGYT the fan mount was a metal piece that hooked onto some holes at the front of the case. There was also a plastic filter mesh that snapped on as well.
@@GoneGYT True, I've looked for used Fractal Define R series cases for a NAS but most of them are missing the HDD cages or trays. Used modular PSU's are even worse because they often only have the cables the previous user has used and nothing else
Also, a point in the favor of getting a new case with the new build, is that if the OLD build is still "fine" as in it works and all, just not necessarily with YOUR work load anymore....then you have a perfectly good shell to keep the old build in when you put it into storage, or go to repurpose it for something else. I did that with my old system, then revived it for Fold@Home when the dark times fell upon the land, and now....with a core component upgrade that became stupidly necessary, it lives on.
Hey, before using a grinder to cut straight lines, it would help to drill every start and end of the cuts. Not only would it make it cleaner, you would then be able to create 'louvers' style opening by prying on the slots without fear of the slot ripping from either ends... From Qc, with love! Take care!
just a couple tips Mr Linus, use a short piece of (50mmx25mm - 2inchx1inch) batten to use as a guide for your grinder blade to ensure straight cuts, also use clamps to hold stuff to your bench, especially using a hole saw as it could grab the material and you could end up with a pretty nasty cut from the spinning material.
My case is a big server tower from the 90's I got used in 2000. The only problem I had with new components is when I got a new power supply that the cables were to short and I needed to get longer ones. 3x3.5" and 6 x 5.25" in the front and a height of 35" of the floor. On the inside is a cage for additional 5 x 5.25" drives. Never had any problem that a card did not fit and there is more than enough space for fans. When I got it ran with two 80MB ST4096 MFM drives from seagate with Unix and you had to install the computer from a 1.2MB HD boot floppy to install the OS from a tape drive. Now the case and the old IBM keyboard are the only old things left of that system. The rest is new stuff I upgraded over the time.
Same, mine has 12 5.25" slots in the front, some of which i sacrificed to the water cooling gods. It had three makeovers, housed a handful of systems already, got tempered glass windows (three!) and has a 1080 (360 squared) radiator in the top. I will never give it away.
I have a black cube case I used to build my son's PC in. I was about to give it away because at the time I didn't need it and it had terrible air flow. When I bought it in 1998 I put in a dual processor motherboard. I purchased an 120mm hole saw and cut two holes in the bottom of the case and two in the back. I then 3D printed covers for the bottom holes and fan enclosures and covers for the rear holes. I printed feet to lift it off the ground for better air flow and finally cut a square in the side right above the CPU. The entire interior was already coverd in noise dampening foam. Temps are excellent now and the case looks modern and great even though it is 26 years old. I also molded my own 20 year old case by cutting a rectangle in the top of it right above where my graphic cards are mounted so the air can be blown directly out of the case. To cover it I bought a cover with three 120mm fan holes cut in it with fan covers that I mounted over the cut out. Looks stock and Temps are perfect.
Front 5.25" and 3.5" bays are the bomb, particularly these days when you don't normally need to put optical drive in them. I have one draw and a double bay reservoir+pump combo in my PC while the family PC has a draw and double bay 80mm fan mount + 3.5" USB. Also, I think side mounted 200mm intake are cool, that's the best position to cool the whole unit and can take the best sized fan too if CPU block isn't too high. I much prefer side intake over glass panel.
Well yeah. I bought a nice case with a good airflow like 10 years ago and it's still working perfectly fine. It's the Fractal Design Arc XL, which does have space for two 140mm intake fans in the front, one in the bottom, space for three 140mm exhaust fans or even more 120mm fans - even a 360mm radiator will fit just fine. The airflow is good, the GPU temperature is good, it does have USB 3.0 - but no USB-C. It does have space for the 5.25" extensions though. Air cooler size? No limit. GPU size? No limit. I love that thing! It even has a window... not as big as with modern cases but still a window.

@@Mr.Anders0n_ As long as you don't take them too seriously and treat them as fun, mostly family friendly (except for the violence, but that doesn't seem to bother most people) popcorn movies, they're fine. The biggest issue with the sequel trilogy is they screwed up the plot on the middle one, so the whole story doesn't really make any sense. I'd be fine with them otherwise. But the whole series, even the "good" ones, is definitely a little campy.
I had the same case from 2006 to 2023. It did have sentimental value. Basically, i bought it after a year of talking about needing a proper case. It costed 60€, with PSU.. My fiance took a huge offense that i didn't talk to her about it first (lol...) and went out and spent all of our rent money on clothes and booze. It was the end of that relationship. So, i kept the case out of spite. It was good case, nothing really wrong with it but it did not match any of my decor. So i bought a new one, costed 45€ this time, without PSU. It is far less robust, you can probably crush it with your hands alone but it looks ok and does the job, and also does have CPU cutout and front cooling, glass, bottom PSU, some cable management. etc. The old one could been tossed from a moving truck and survive...
When using a hole saw, cut about half way through then flip the material over to finish the cut from the other side. It gives a cleaner edge and reduces tear-out.
If you replace the two 5.25 slot covers with mesh ones, make the intake on the side of the front case bigger and build some sort of adapter for the front to hold fans, you could also make a nice airflow.
A blast from the past! Good gravy I still have my Chieftec Dragon case sitting here - fully modded with Acrylic Sidewindow, self-soldered blue LED light, Fanducts in the front for proper ventilation, Neonstrips (not the fancy new LED-"neon" in the front grill, custom sleeved Powercables to beautify the old ketchup and mustard cables. Paired with the ever so lovely rounded IDE-Cables - courtesy of an exacto-knife and some heatshrink-tubing to get it into shape. Yes ... the old times.
A PC case is just a box for your components. I usually bay up them to 50 bucks max. not more. Mine is also like 10 years old. 1. Use a drill to drill out holes for air vents and such. 2. Use a step drill to pre drill corners if you want to cut out a panel and then cut it out with a jigsaw. Less mess, less noise, you get the idea. 3. Install 3D printed covers and stuff after you have made cut outs. Looks way cleaner and you can add honey comb designs or other to your liking.
Hey LTT team, could you look at doing a video of assisted listening devices? The listen everywhere and the AudioFetch Wi-Fi servers let you stream audio over WiFi with low latency to hundreds of users to their mobile phones or tablets. You could use these in your badminton center for any TVs you might have in your work out room. Assisted listening devices are used for people that are hard of hearing. I would appreciate it if you could make a diy solution that is cheap to implement.
@KilerChese the other one to keep an eye on is Auracast which is Bluetooth. I tried one of these ALDs at a product demo and was shocked how clear it sounded.
As someone who has run a computer completely without a case (FYI Meccano has a great hole spacing for holding hard drives together), having a new case for the new system lets you keep the old case for the old system which makes it way more usable. It's way harder to re-sell, use elsewhere or even give to a friend if it's missing the case.
Drilling and cutting acrylic sheets? First clamp the acrylic between two sheets of 3/8" plywood, then drill or cut through the entire stack. The plywood acts to reinforce the acrylic and helps to greatly reduce cracking and chipping,
I think having a side-by-side comparison of doing it by hand and using the CNC would have been fun. Seeing how "pro" you can make mods look when you have the tools.
Shame on Linus for not fitting in the side window with that window gasket stuff we used back in the OG modding days! That being said, this stuff is right up my ally. I still rock a modified Chieftec CS-901 Big Tower from 2001 or so. Drilled out the HDD cage holders to make room for 120mm fans, got some ducts to also fit 120mm rear fans, added some cable management/hiding utensils and so on. These things are built like a tank... used it as a stepladder more often than I can count. I just love the case and it's look so much, I will never replace it. I don't care for RGB and glass side panels, but even if I would do: These things are probably the most modified cases from back in the day, where ppl added exactly these 2 things and more. Got at least 15 other cases kicking around, but none of them get me as exited as the CS-901 and its little 601 brother (less modded housing the work PC).
Hacking up your case with a dremel tool is how we did cable management back in the day. We didn’t have all these fancy pre-cut holes and rubber grommets. We had to walk up hill both ways to get to the dremel too.
I love the message here. I'm still rocking the HAF 932 I found in the trash when I first got into PC's. I take pride in the older components I've saved from landfill :)
Let me get this straight, you spent like 2 working days modifying old case to fit new hardware, and still had to buy a bunch of things to make it possible, instead of buying the cheapest gaming case for $40-50?
This is Basicly my response to the video. Cost wise, you barely save anything. The moment you factor in your time, you make a considerable loss on building a case.
I used to cut big holes into such old cases, add some plexiglass, neon tubes and call it a day. Making boring offices cases pretty fancy for their time. Once i felt adventurous and painted one black
The other thing Adam touched on is that it was far more common to mount PSUs at the top of the case, which probably did help with cooling but made the tower itself more unstable, since it was really top-heavy. Not bad enough that you were at risk of it tipping over, but slightly more awkward to carry if you ever had to move it.
I was at Free Geek Twin Cities the other day, and they had one of those glass-sided cases that are all the rage, with 4 installed fans, and a PSU - for $10. The PSU was only 450W but if I was in the process of building a PC I'd have snagged it immediately
I miss the days of DIY cases.. in the mid 2000's I added a large window, dremelled a dragon on the acryllic, added red LEDs (hand soldered), and stripped electrical wires of their sleeves and used that to line the edges of the new window frame.
Man, I feel like a grandpa now. I remember when casemodding was all the rage in like 2004. PC magazines had tutorials on DIY side panel windows. My dad taught me how to use an angle grinder and I went to town on my side panel because I wanted an acrylic window. Good times!

In September I finally retired my Thermaltake Xaser II case after 20+ years and a dozen builds. It was modified until it was almost unrecognizable from its original form. Everything from liquid cooling for CPU and video cards to top, bottom and multiple side fans, I made it all fit. Cable management? Didn't exist back then unless it was zip ties and cable loom from Radio Shack and AutoZone. I'll miss that case, it was heavy steel and aluminum. The case alone weighed more than my entire new build does. And that includes the display.
There's also literally 3d printed cases you can rent a 3d printer shop to print out, or pay a printer to make it for you. assuming noise isn't a problem, semi open air cases have great air flow and usually are fine if you just de dust it when it gets dusty;
I miss the old days when custom case modding was a think. I had flames cut out the side of one of my cases with a Black outside, Yellow inside & a red Strobe light inside, Another really tall blue case sprayed yellow inside with a funky rounded X shape cut out. Another black case which came with a window so I didn't have to cut this one but I painted Black inside & screwed a small plastic rib cage to the front, red paint to resemble blood dripping down the window and red paint inside.
Man Linus truly being a dad. My dad did the same thing when we went to build a new PC. My dad said instead of getting a $80 case get a $20 and put it into hardware. I just said to the guy give me the best $20 case you have and I just showed my dad that the case literally feels like a toy cuz of how cheap the plastic is. In the end I walked out with the $80 case
I"m using the same house from the late nineties. It's a DTK 3U rackmount (standing on its front: intake down) with 3x14'' fans. 2x360mm rads, a 13900 and a 3070 fits in it perfectly. Did not cut anything, just put a thermalpad on the CPU blackplate contacting the MB tray.

I just set a minimum price of $10 since most of those bs ones are $0, $1, or $5
I don't have a problem with it. I just ignore those listings. The ones I hate are the ones that say a price but then in the description have a higher price for the item I want but listed with a bunch of other random junk for cheaper.

Just buy a new case. Got it.
I think that's message here, but they needed to film something for 18 minutes
A non-budget, non-hotbox ATX case from the current era will last as far as can be forseen.
You deserve a non-plain-steel case, darnit! (Void for broke students.)
If you have basic tools at home, refurbish a case might be a decent and fun project. You just don't have to chop it with precision of an axe like in this video
the message is that, if you have fairly good case now then there's little reason to buy new one, and if you buy new one now, don't buy another in 3 years, buy one in 30 years
Get the cheapest case that works for your system without having to cut it up (unless you really want to, like for your RUclips channel or something)

Counterpoint: "Window with blinky lights behind it."
Counter-Counterpoint: Anglegrinder + Acrylic or fine wire mesh+your moms pantyhose!
Edit: That's not supposed to be a "yo moma" joke, those things are stretchy as heck and depending on how much you use you can cover a whole side panel window with it.
I have an 18 year old case with an acrylic window. Make of that what you will.
@@Atlessa got one in my basement where all the acrylic is lime green and honestly they should start offering that again in modern cases

If your power or hdd LEDs don't work, take it out and flip it 180°
Love seeing Linus's early 2000's case modding skills in action after 20 years
The best investment case wise is getting a full tower or larger.
Thermal Take, The Tower 900 👍

@@GoneGYT I agree.
Take care!
2:14 this is a certified Alex moment
just a couple tips Mr Linus, use a short piece of (50mmx25mm - 2inchx1inch) batten to use as a guide for your grinder blade to ensure straight cuts, also use clamps to hold stuff to your bench, especially using a hole saw as it could grab the material and you could end up with a pretty nasty cut from the spinning material.

Draw? What part of Boston are you from? Drawer.

Linus and Elijah's relationship is like having a newly wed man trying to get along his new partner's nerd kid. And i'm all for it
There's also literally 3d printed cases you can rent a 3d printer shop to print out, or pay a printer to make it for you. assuming noise isn't a problem, semi open air cases have great air flow and usually are fine if you just de dust it when it gets dusty;
11:23 Indicating 12VHPWR with the middle finger is perfection.
Best way to save money on a case is to just leave your pc on top of your motherboard box and refer to it as an "open air test bench".
Man Linus truly being a dad. My dad did the same thing when we went to build a new PC. My dad said instead of getting a $80 case get a $20 and put it into hardware.
