Although I previously commented on this excellent discussion of the Sennheiser HD 400 PRO headphones, which prompted me to buy them, I finally received them today (3/10/2022). Plugged them into my TEAC three head cassette player, powered by my Marantz 2275 stereo receiver, and I was blown away! Fantastic set of cans! Kudos go again to the mixer expert who provided this video.
Man, this guy was great! I never realized how complicated mixing is. It’s truly a science! So, I thoroughly enjoyed his presentation of the Sennheiser HD 400 PRO headphones as explained by his mixing demo. Although I am not a mixing engineer, his presentation caused me to give these a shot. I’m a classical pianist, so I’ll be really interested in hearing my vinyls, cassettes, and CDs with these headphones. Probably will be another world.
I have a formally different headphone model with the same driver, housing, and only slightly changed design details. HD560s and they started selling 2 years ago and since then I have been working in them completely fatigue-free for several hours. I am very pleased with them. I suppose that the rebranding is connected with the aim of occupying the marketing niche of professional headphones.
I've been using my Shure SRH840's for well over 10 years now, mostly as reference when live mixing, so the closed back thing is pretty key. Biggest thing for me is having a constant no matter the room or PA, I always know my headphones aren't lying to me :)
Back before the Internet destroyed brick-and-mortar music stores, I visited one that had a test rack of about six different headphone models somewhere in the $100-$300 range. I recognized two or three of them as very highly rated. And most of these headphones didn't sound terribly different from each other. Then I tried the Sennheisers. I was shocked. They were like three orders of magnitude better than all the other models. Music sounded 'real' through them. I've been using Senns ever since. The current model I have is the HD 598, about five years old, probably only about 150 bucks when I bought them. The head pad is cracked in a number of places, and the inner seals of the velour pads have both come undone, but they still sound terrific. I will only track, mix, and master with these.
Oh man, that record from The Fray was hugely influential and likely still effects my music (even from the country vein)! The amount of times I just sat and listened to the sonics on those drums, like you just did, because they are so freaking amazing! Absolutely love the songs you sampled from - the sonics of that record are perfection! Thank you for your hard work and for this video!
Warren, I have a pair of Sennheiser HD580’s I have had for 10 years plus. I have all the lauded headphones from AKG, Audio Technica et al, but I have never yet found anything to surpass the sound quality and comfort for critical listening and mixing than the Sennheisers.
I have a pair of the HD600s and I love them. When you mention that they feel like you're "in a room with speakers" I completely understand. 1st time I mixed with them I thought I left my monitors on! My wife commented that they sound like you are at a concert towards the front row. I Mix with phones when away from home and reference with them otherwise. I love my Senns!
Never been one to use headphones for long periods of time because of the fatigue factor. But I recently got Sennheiser HD 558 and now I'm loving it. They sound sweet, incredibly comfortable and I'll use them for hours and forget that I'm even wearing them!!
I have the DT770 Pro 250ohm and EPOS H6Pro closed back for PC gaming. I have also used the H6Pro open back versions and those didn't have much body to the audio. Those felt like they were just "there" and had no body. I just bought the HD400 Pro headphones. I play BF2042, CS, and WoW and dabble in Warzone a bit. In BF2042, I was hearing people crawling through bushes near me and running on the other side of walls and being able to pinpoint their position very accurately. I was super surprised. The bass in these don't seem to mess with the mids and highs at all. I am hearing things in video games that I have never heard before. I Spent about 3 hours playing games today and absolutely loves these. I have a large head and dumbo ears and these are very comfortable.
The Fray's album "How to Save a Life" still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it 💛 I always loved the kick drum. And now I know why :) And all the drums sound even better ;) Thanks Warren for all you do!

This was a really great review, the first guy that I’ve seen that actually puts in to practice what they say and use them for ACTUAL practical work. If you can mix with them live and be happy with them, that’s good enough for me.
for spotting and mixing? I always use Grado Labs Alesandro Music Series open back headphones. For live recording? Sony MDR 7506. Tried many. These two I trust.
I've been using HD280s for years and although they squeeze the crap out of your head and are boxy in the mid range, it draws immediate attention to any issues in that area and I love them. I have the HD560S - Apparently, the HD400 Pro is a rebrand with new paint and extra cables. Its a dry and analytical headset, with decent bass response for an open-back.
Well, they, kinda have the exact same paint, so i'm not sure it's JUST a rebranding... I'm hoping its a 560s with slightly tamed treble. I guess i have to wait for FR measurements to figure that out. I don't think "dry" is the right word for for analytical headphones... because analytical headphones are the only headphones that can present the music the way it's meant to be heard... Which means they are the "wettest" headphones, if we're sticking with the moisture analogy, lmao. xD I think sharp is a better word to use... It's nice to have a headphone that is sharp enough that you can feel every texture in the track, without cutting yourself on them, that's the ideal listening experience right? Well, for a sound purist, it is... Can't speak much for audiophiles though.

Hello Mage, I have a pair of ATH-M40's and a pair of Sennheiser HD 560s (sonically the same as the ones Warren is using). If you want to ask me any questions about the differences just give us a shout. No worries man :)
I'm going to give these a shot Warren. I've been using ATH-50s for doing low end checks (as needed, not for long periods) and I have found them a really good substitute to needing a sub to hear what my Adam A7Xs are missing. I'm buying a pair of the HD 400s though. I need an open back solution (I like working at night! for long hours creating!). This sounds promising.
Are these budget versions of the HD600 - which are considered one of teh flattest headphones. Hence ideal for mixing/mastering tasks - if done with headphones and a great headphone amp. (monotor, topping, gracie etc).
My good friend, thank you so much for this review. I have always considered myself an audiophile but accessibility is always a concern in the real world. Having someone with your talents being able to recommend a headset in the $250 range is priceless. Thank you again for everything you do here.
Both open & closed back have their place - I can't imagine using open back in public where outside noise colors what you're listening to & what you're listening to bothers those around you.
i have both here because i try the hd400 Pro. The hd400 is confortable like the hd600. The sound of hd400 is good but not awesome. I hear more details and emotions in the mids with my hd600. Also, the hd400 is more cheap compare to hd600. The bassline is a little more flat but we have here a pic around 4kHz in the hd400. But we hear more details in the trebles with hd400. I will continue try them and maybe keep them or not ....... tell me if you try them ;)
hey Warren, yeah the HD400pro are great, but my decision for a new one was…. at the end the Beyer Dynamic DT 1990 (had both for 1week). greetings from Berlin. Curtis
It's a joy and a pleasure watching you work Warren. Those headphones can't be half bad for the money surely after the mixing you done on them. I have an old set of beyerdynamic DT 990, not sure coming to think of it which version they are Ohms wise. They do sound different depending what you plug them into, console versus Audient iD4. Cheers, grand video
Thanks Joey! I appreciate the kind words! The Beyers ate great headphones! Yes, I enjoyed using these! Sennheiser is one of out most requested brands, was happy to be able to do a video using them
Open back headphones are more dimensional than closed back ones, meaning you can really position every instrument in space, not just somewhere between left and right :) -in my experience-
I use 'audio-technica ATH-R70x' because all the videos I researched say 'Open Back' have less ear fatigue. I am a hobbyist but find a nice balance in the details between the mix in the H/P and my KRK RP5gen4's. I may buy a couple of these for friends jamming. :) Thank you for this :)
I love hearing good mixed songs with great headphones and thought of getting into that field with college and such however i feel i may not fit in due to my preference being to only adjust volumes and not change EQ and other modifications. I like purity and when it comes to bands at least, let them change the tones and such and i change control the volume.
I'm nowhere near a pro setup, don't have monitors, so my headphones are my only mix reference. I have Sennheiser HD555's, and I certainly always hear far more detail in these than any other headphones. They're open-back and yes, very comfy too - to the point where I worry about damaging my hearing because I will use them for whole evenings. Won't have paid as much as $250, probably more like £100-150 for them (they're not pro). I'd say the bass is a little too light in them, tend to find my mixes boom a bit on other speaker types, but it means that I can hear the mids and highs when mixing, and I know its limitations.
Yes, I learn so much from listening to you do this kind of evaluation - Thanks Warren - and Mixing - you always make such perfect sense - there is nothing so disappointing as a poorly mixed Song or Album. Thank you, thank you, thankyou.
Still have the S-Logic Ultrasone, for mixing, but is out of range on price tag, but hearing that shimmering and the triangle gives me goosebumps with it. For radio-work, I use my Sennheiser HD25pro. Only thing is, that working long time with it, makes your ears sore. Because the speakers are on your ears, instead over it. both are closed unfortunately. So maybe I have to try the 400 as well? 250 looks like a bargain.
audient headphone amp is nice, i need a audient id44. i have id4 but id44 has more headroom and hit 18db and id4 only can go to 12db. my headphones i use is sennheiser hd280 pro, audio technica ath-50x and beyerdynamic Dt 770 pro. i just a home studio mixing guy with limited income.
Warren, would you recommend these HD400 over a pair of Blue Headphones? I have a pair of DT770 Pro and love them, but am looking for some open back headphones for better mixing.
maybe cover the mutiple "standards" trhu the ages (Beyer DT-100, Sony MDR-7506, etc) how much bleed do you get , even from closed back (so tracking , not mixing) does it even matter if you're at a low level monitoring ? in-ear comparisons ?
The thing is, he is such an experienced audio engineer that he could probably mix on a transistor radio and still make it sound good. That being said, I've no doubt the Sennheiser is a very fine headphone.
Hey Warren! Hope you are healing well. How's the top end compared to the hd280pro? I use the 280s but the top end is a little harsh to me. Thanks as always you rock🤘
I find quite funny that you find the hd280 harsh, to me the top end is a bit rolled, but hey, I also have the akg k720, quite bright, so maybe thats why the 280 sounds duller to me. Greetings!
I mix on those and don’t notice too much of a difference, when compared to monitors. I mostly use them at night when the family is asleep, but sometimes I do put them on if I really want to focus in on one aspect of the mix.
Great video. Your presentations are always very informative. I'm still deciding whether to add monitors or upgrade my headphones. Decisions, decisions.
What I find interesting is the fact that there are very often different monitors on the meter bridge. Question... How is it possible to mix on monitors that you don’t really really know? Question 2.... Isn’t it important to let headphones and monitors play in for a while? Love the channel:))))
I also commented on the other headphone video asking about how this one/the hd400 pro stacks up against the shure srh1440 or the neumann ndh20 for example
Was BR pressed really hot ? Are you listening to vinyl or digitized ? I ask as I could not hear the first two tunes, but when Queen came up it sounded much hotter. I hope you go back to early analog like Beatles four track recording of Revolver 1966 or Abbey Road 1969 where they went all the up to eight tracks Paul Simon is another early eight track on Bookends 1968.
I use Sennheiser HD700, HD6XX, HD58X, HD280 PRO, JBL TUNE760NC and, wait for it, MONOPRICE Hi-Fi DJ Style Over the Ear Pro Headphone bundled with Sonarworks Reference 4 for headphones for €17,50 ! (Including upgrade to Sound ID for Headphones). And, of course, Apple standard cabled buds…..
Hey there are people all over RUclips telling people what to buy, who do EDM at home. How would they even know good headphones and speakers? Based on how accurate boops and beeps are? No. You have to hear recognizable instruments to judge reproduction. Guitar, Bass and Drums. Does the snare sound like a snare? Nothing wrong with EDM but as reference material? How do you judge sound that was fabricated electronically to not even mimic acoustic instruments? The Fray tells me you know how to produce a damn album. Forget popularity, sales or success. I can hear you know what you're doing.@@Producelikeapro
I'm testing some buds simultaneously. The buds I have in have so far only sounded good from 22 to 23 something in on the Sliding Doors. I even changed them from noise canceling to not. I don't usually like buds so I'm not going to say what they are. Still not found anything to top my good old motorola HT820s both plugged in or over bluetooth. I think listening to this clip again with those will be very different.
Looks similar to the HD595 I had those and sell them because they are really really uncomfortable, same with the HD580 also had them and sell them. I used to have the HD465 first generation(foam open type on ear type) and thew where fantastic but the following generations changed the design where your ear goes inside the headphone and not over it, very uncomfortable to me to wear, most headphones manufacturers went this way so my options are really límited right now because for some reason almost no one makes over ear units, not ear inside like most right now
It was amazing to see how fast you can pull that mix together. Headphones I use, I downgraded to some audio Technica ATH fiftieths??? Also, I was using ultrasound 750s. Nice demo bud.
Thanks ever so much! I used to use the Ultrasone’s as well! Unfortunately they couldn’t repair them properly in the US and after three months of not having them work we moved on. Shame they were great headphones however without proper support in the US I can’t support them
Ultrasone. Yeah I still have my 750 pros and the brown I think they were 250s my only open back. Hey Warren, keep up the good work man. Sending love all the way from, sunny, Bermuda! :-)
Great video (as always)! I have used AKG K240 Semi-open Pro Studio Headphones for about 20 years in my little home studio. I think I still have the original pair that I bought. They are available from Sweetwater for $69. I get good results with consistency between the headphones and my speakers (but they're cheap also - M-Audio BX5a.). I only use my studio to record demos of my songs, so there is no budget-I really can't afford higher priced headphones. It might be interesting if you tried a pair of these K240s sometime. Take care.
My HD-600's spend most of their life packed away in the original box, only coming out when I really want the best possible sound, eg for a new album debut.. For my daily driver I use an ageing pair of HD-555's (with foam removal mod applied). Love the sound signature of the 555. At some point I "upgraded" from the 555's to the 598's, but was disappointed with the sound signature of the 598's. Bass not as pronounced and overall less natural sound. So I gave it to my wife and she loves them (she actually compared both side-by-side and prefers the 598's anyway), and so I still use the 555's prolifically... The're between 15-20 years old now (Go Sennheiser!), so well-worn and the left driver is starting to crackle at higher volumes, so I'm thinking the time for an upgrade is nigh... This 400 Pro seems like it could be the perfect choice to fill those trusty shoes. At least I hope so !
Ghe HD 580´s were the best headphones Sennheiser ever made. All the great hits from the 80´s and 90´s were mixed on them. They discontinued them because of the look, and made the 600´s. The 600´s don´t even sound close the the 580´s.
Hi Warren, I know I'm off topic but could you please tell me what the song at the very beginning of this video is? Would be great for referencing I think.
@@Producelikeapro Cool, because they're very underrated. They've been around for so long, no one looks at them any more, like a lot of gear. Just because stuff is new, it doesn't mean they've made it better. It's just different, for the sake of it. I have two mono avontones from the early 80's and they haven't made better ones since then. I think some gear reaches it's peak where it doesn't get much better.........until something really, really good comes along, which is almost never nowadays.

I've been using the Sennheiser 560S for music listening, tracking and mixing and I love them to bits. In fact they look a lot like these HD400 PROs...
They are the same
Shure SRH 1440 or sennheiser HD 400 pro?
Between your and Glenn's video on these headphones I've watched today, I may have to audition a pair for myself.
Marvellous! Thanks for sharing
hey Warren,
yeah the HD400pro are great, but my decision for a new one was…. at the end the Beyer Dynamic DT 1990 (had both for 1week).
greetings from Berlin. Curtis
Wow! The 1990’s are great! But three Thema the price over here! I love them but they are $699!
@@Producelikeaprohi !
How do they compare with the Austrian Audio headphones?
Thank you
Audio Technica ATH-M50X for me, bought recently and was happy to run with the majority of reviews - seem good.
Thanks ever so much for sharing
It's a joy and a pleasure watching you work Warren. Those headphones can't be half bad for the money surely after the mixing you done on them.
I have an old set of beyerdynamic DT 990, not sure coming to think of it which version they are Ohms wise. They do sound different depending what you plug them into, console versus Audient iD4.
Cheers, grand video
Thanks Joey! I appreciate the kind words! The Beyers ate great headphones! Yes, I enjoyed using these! Sennheiser is one of out most requested brands, was happy to be able to do a video using them
Open back headphones are more dimensional than closed back ones, meaning you can really position every instrument in space, not just somewhere between left and right :) -in my experience-
I still use a pair of Sennheiser HD410s. My only "issue" with headphones is you lose the ambience the room adds to the sound.
Thanks for sharing Andy!!
I tried the Sennheiser HD 400S Closed-Back. It sounded very odd. I usually use Sony MDR-7506 and old AKG gold as well as Beyer DT770 80ohms.
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Thank you for doing the review of the HD 400 Pro Headphones. So respect your insight :)
Thanks Rick! I really appreciate that!
I have the HD 650 headphones. Love 'em!
Thanks for sharing!
I love hearing good mixed songs with great headphones and thought of getting into that field with college and such however i feel i may not fit in due to my preference being to only adjust volumes and not change EQ and other modifications. I like purity and when it comes to bands at least, let them change the tones and such and i change control the volume.
I used to mix on hd480’s. I move to Audi Technics ATH m70x a couple years ago. In my opinion, the response is a bit flatter. All personal taste….
I’ve noticed you never seem to talk about one of most popular headphone brands -Beyer Dynamic ….what do you think of them?
HNY Warren and PLAP family !
Entered the contest. Thanks for the great videos Warren!
Best of luck to you and everyone else!
Awesome review, I’m considering getting pair of open back headphones. These seem to be right for the job.
Marvellous!
Sounds like you haven't tried much headphones
You're good at this. You should review more headphones.
Aw shucks! Thanks ever so much
Dt 900 pro x vs dt 880 vs hd 400
Which one is better for mixing and mastering ?
I use the Beyerdynamic DT880 pro (250 Ohm). It's a semi-open headphones.
I have a pair of DT770 Pro and love them, but am looking for some open back headphones for better mixing.
maybe cover the mutiple "standards" trhu the ages (Beyer DT-100, Sony MDR-7506, etc)
how much bleed do you get , even from closed back (so tracking , not mixing)
does it even matter if you're at a low level monitoring ?
in-ear comparisons ?
Really cool idea! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Great video. I have the AKG 702 and am pretty happy with it. But based on your review I asume that the Sennheisers have a better low end.
I will have to try! Thanks for the idea!
Wait...is this Mr. Huartt's new Wolverine look we've been hearing about for the past couple of weeks? Looking good!
Haha apparently
The HD400pro seems to be a slightly more refined 560S, with a tamed down 5khz peak and some midrange adjustments. Looks promising on paper.
It's the same headphone with a different paint job and coiled cable. Confirmed by sennheiser twitter
@@lupe_g2 Doesn't meant they can't tame treble and readjust the FR slightly. They're same but sounds slightly different. 400 pros are more refined
@@clickbaitpro At that point just EQ the 560s lol
@@clickbaitpro they are the same headphone. No matter of you want to think differently or not.
*Thanks for this video. By the way, I love the hair!*
Thanks ever so much!
We certainly have to do more tests! Just getting started!
You worked on The Fray? Damn. They've got some great stuff.
Thanks ever so much
Hey there are people all over RUclips telling people what to buy, who do EDM at home.
Like the new Wolverine look!!! 😆
Haha Yes! I do need a haircut just got to find the time! Haha
Do you think Audient ID14 would be sufficient to power the HD 400 Pro headphones?
Open aural HD295's love using them in the studio
Awesome, I have some old HD 595 Sennheizers for when recording. Sennheizers are usually great on the high end.
Thanks for your insight!
Great drum groove and sound on that track you're mixing Warren!!
Thanks ever so much
I'm testing some buds simultaneously.
I used to have the HD465 first generation(foam open type on ear type) and thew where fantastic but the following generations changed the design where your ear goes inside the headphone and not over it, very uncomfortable to me to wear, most headphones manufacturers went this way so my options are really límited right now because for some reason almost no one makes over ear units, not ear inside like most right now
thank you!
Shame they were great headphones however without proper support in the US I can’t support them
The Audio Technica’s are amazing headphones for the money!
Ultrasone. Yeah I still have my 750 pros and the brown I think they were 250s my only open back. Hey Warren, keep up the good work man. Sending love all the way from, sunny, Bermuda! :-)
Will the headphone out of a focusrite scarlett 4i4 drive these headphones ok?
Warren! I’m loving the new Wolverine look. Ha Ha. As always good content!
Haha thanks Ryan! My hair never ceases to cause a stir!
I'd love to know the song you're mixing, it sounds amazing
Dt 900 pro x Or hd 400 pro ?
I mix exclusively through my HD 400 PRO .. 🙂
I love watching you mix, you always give me good ideas, nice.
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it
Heya Warren-watch that arm rehab! Peace! 🙂
Thanks ever so much!
I use Sennheiser HD565 since many years, they are open and old. Probably ist time for a new one ;)
Thanks for sharing
In you honest opinion. Which do you prefer out of these and the Austrian Audio Hi-65?
I do like the Low End of the Sennheisers, however the midrange detail of the Austrian would be hard to miss!!
@@Producelikeapro thank you for the reply. I'm looking for some new headphones and always appreciate your views when you're reviewing them.
Austrians are much expensive, nearly twice the price right now
Why did you get rid of the focals
I didn't I'm just rotating speakers and trying different models. It's really important for me to try what's out there to be properly informed.
Take care.
Damn it 2nd in! Good job Rock Solid Media!
Thanks Andy!
@@DICARLOPRODUCTIONS its possible sound better than the hd600 ? lol ....... if i can hear bassline under 70Hz, my hd600 will be perfect.
Hi Warren, I know I'm off topic but could you please tell me what the song at the very beginning of this video is? Would be great for referencing I think.
Have you ever tried AKG 701's? Open back headphones? They're half the price.
I have a Long Time ago, I will try them again! Thanks for the tip! I’ll revisit them and see how I feel now
@@Producelikeapro Cool, because they're very underrated. They've been around for so long, no one looks at them any more, like a lot of gear. Just because stuff is new, it doesn't mean they've made it better. It's just different, for the sake of it. I have two mono avontones from the early 80's and they haven't made better ones since then. I think some gear reaches it's peak where it doesn't get much better.........until something really, really good comes along, which is almost never nowadays.
my favorite headphones test track is home's "resonance"
Please review beyerdynamic dt 1990pro
I thought what made these special was the software from Sennheiser, which emulates listening through monitors in a room?
I did a video on that system a few months ago. This video is just on the headphones
