Bout done with "Hannibal series" let's go grab a bite of dead body & get to the kills!
supp
James pls do tag the Japanese movie there's I remember 1 male death
Of all the fictional characters to ever exist, Hannibal Lecter might be the one that needed a backstory the least. He's a character that's infinitely scarier if you don't know why he is the way he is. But apparently I don't know the power of money.
Him and Joker pretty much
You're right when considering movies as an art, the companies view them as business tho so since the first couple of movies made BIG BUCKS they are gonna keep doing movies about this oddball
I always imagined his backstory was really dull. Typical serial killer traits: Cruelty to animals, narcissism, all that. He just happened to be exceptionally intelligent and successful.
What is interesting is Lecter's greatest weakness, which is very briefly touched upon in both Red Dragon and Silence, is that he doesn't know *why* he's like this, and he's very insecure about being "crazy", of not being in total control of himself.
Notice how whenever Starling or Graham call him out on this, he drops the mind games and physically threatens them.
100%. It’s like trying to give a backstory to someone like Jack the Ripper. Takes away the horror completely
@@DrHappy-hk4hl I'll give Joker a pass because every time they give him a backstory (Batman 89 and Joker), they actually do it right.
"It's like if Netflix made a Hannibal movie."
That is *scathing.*
Accurate.
Oil up.

@@carleeelizabeth omg🤣🤣🤣🤣
nah fr 😭😭 😭 nahhhhhhhhh
Pressuring the author to write it was its greatest downfall. If you’re not passionate about the art you’re creating, it’s going to turn out bad.
Yep you are right
Reminds me of how Shonen Jump forced the author of Naruto to come back out of retirement and write a sequel series just for money, so he wrote Boruto and he basically sabotaged it at first and purposely wrote it shitty
There's a saying in writing that says "If you're losing passion or bored of what you're writing then you're audience will too."
This movie felt like a blatant cash grab, yet wound up being a bomb. Ironic isn't it?
The Hannibal television show didn't just redeem the character. It elevated it to a new artistic level. Mads Mickelson truly deserves all the credit possible for evolving that character.
Yup
Billy Loomis was right. It IS more fun when Hannibal Lecter doesn't have a motive for eating people.
Common Billy Loomis W.
@@CLawManGameplaychannell the only Billy Loomis W
Anytime I see that name, I can only think of Billy Loomer from Ned's Declassified
The problem isn't the motive; it's the poorly executed approach to explaining it.
So true
Pedantic historian mode: Hannibal didn't cross the Berlin Wall, which was built in 1961. That would be Soviet occupied border, probably in East Germany or possibly in Hungary or Czechoslovakia. More popularly those were called the Iron Curtain.
As a history teacher I thank you for this
Also Lithuania doesnt have such a castle😂
Courtesy of IMDB, I just learned another pedantic fact: Mischa is actually a male name in Eastern Europe; it's a diminutive of Mikhail. A more appropriate name for Hannibal's kid sister would have been Mascha, diminutive of Maria.
@@colinbaldwin313 while it is traditionally a male name, there are women named Mischa, I'm from Eastern Europe and I've met a couple of them myself (might be a recent thing though), haven't met a single Hannibal yet
If I recall from the film which I haven’t watched in many years (thankfully) the captions state that the border he crosses is the Polish-East German border.
I feel bad for the Author man, he was basically forced to make a backstory for a character that was specifically made to NOT have one, no wonder it stunk
This is why you gotta be careful with who you give your story's rights to
The backstory about eating his sister at least did originate with the book Hannibal in flashbacks.
The vague mystery of it all makes it work better though
What made Hannibal so terrifying was how we knew so little about him. He didn’t really need an origin. Although I really do enjoy his portrayal as Hannibal.
Same with Michael Myers
"And Hannibal became a weeb"
That's as much backstory as I need to explain the cannibalism
I tried reading the book and once it started building up the romance between Hannibal and his step aunt, I put it down and never picked it back up. What a bizzare narrative choice.
That’s Thomas Harris for you.
in the book his uncle and aunt specifically come to the orphanage and adopt him. which makes a lot more sense than hannibal running away and traveling all the way to france.
On top of that, Hannibal is significantly younger at that point in the book.
hannibal rising sounds like it should be the title of a movie about the second punic war. not a silence of the lambs prequel
Same. Sounds like something OverSimplified would title a video for.
Honestly, valid
Now that would have been kind of cool.
As a history buff, I approve this comment! 👍
love this comment so much
Rest in peace Gaspard. You did justice to one of the most complex and intriguing characters of all time. 37 years old is way too soon to go.
Yeah it's sad he passed away so young I did like him in hannibal rising 😢
I'd only seen him in Hannibal Rising and wasn't in love with performance yet it was infinitely compelling. I teared up and had to take a break when James said he passed, a true tragedy
He'll go in the history books of great portrayals in despised movies. RIP man.
@@Gamingturtle090 He played Midnight Man in the MCU's Moon Knight series

8:14 - I can't believe I'm "defending" this flick, but: 1944 + "8 years later" = 1952. No such thing as the Berlin Wall at that time (it went up in 1961). In fact, it probably wouldn't have been that hard moving from Eastern Europe to W-Germany or France in the early 1950s. Hannibal could always have claimed that he was a displaced person, trying to get back to relatives of his in France or something.
In the book Hannibals uncle is still alive and came to get himfrom the orphanage to take him back to France. On top of that Hannibal was a'lot younger in the book at this point, about 13 in age.
“There is such a thirst for the Hannibal Lecter character.”
Translation:
“There is such a big profit to be made from the Hannibal Lecter character.”
Also, some people were hot for him, which is kinda weird.
@@TimedRevolverPeople wanted to fuck Ted Bundy
“People thirst for Hannibal lecter”
The tv show Hannibal does somewhat acknowledge Hannibal Rising with Bryan Fuller saying had things continued, Lecter’s Aunt and Uncle (who David Bowie was envisioned for the role) making an appearance but in the shows third season there’s a subplot that acknowledges it but subverts plenty of details to make Hannibal’s less generic but more detailed and complex which is very much what the show was good at for a lot of its characters
Don’t they include Chiyoh in the series as well? I know a fair amount of Hannibal but never watched the series (weak stomach) and I swear I’ve heard that she was in it
@@elisabethschmerzler963 Yes she’s a supporting character from season 3, when they galavant across Europe for the first half of the season.
@@elisabethschmerzler963yet are watching dead meat, entirely focused on gore & killing lmao
@@Just1nY. Yeah but it’s different. The Kill counts aren’t super focused on the deaths beyond the quick description, I often use it as background noise and there’s a lot of humor which softens the blow. Hannibal has everything pan out in slow, extremely gory and hyper focused detail which I’m not a big fan of.
16:02 Thank you for mentioning It's Only the End of the World! Gaspard was great in that film, and also in A Very Long Engagement (which led him to be cast in Hannibal Rising), in Saint Laurent, and in Jacquou le Croquant the same year Hannibal Rising came out, to name a few. He had much better films and performances in France, he was a very respected and acclaimed actor there, so it's unfair to judge his entire career based on a single film which turned out to be bad (which wasn't your case but I often see people doing that). English wasn't his first language and he did the best he could with what he was given, not to mention that he had a lot of pressure on him for playing such an iconic character, so it's clear that he wasn't very comfortable.
He was also a fan casting choice for the role of Gambit in the MCU. He gave up on Hollywood after Hannibal Rising until the director of Moon Knight invited him to play Midnight Man in it. It's a shame that he died so young in such a tragic way. Thank you for being respectful towards Gaspard although you hated this film, James.
As a Lithuanian I'm really proud of the fact that Hannibal is my ethnicity and appreciate you James covering some of our history
Hello, fellow Lithuanian👋
You guys have some really awesome history, especially back during the Middle Ages. Way to give the Teutonic Order what-for!
Absolutely insane that you're proud of that.
For years, I made it a point to never learn anything about Lithuania. Ever. Because after traveling the world and seeing all these famous places, the world started feeling smaller, less mysterious.
So I figured, if I never learn anything about Lithuania, anything is possible there. It's like "Here Be Dragons" on ancient maps. For all I know, in Lithuania, people wear hats on their feet and hamburgers eat people.
Then I learned Hannibal was Lithuanian and I was like "fuck, now I know exactly 1 Lithuania Fact."
Us, Estonian can claim Esther from The Orphan 😂
It's ironic that they called this movie Hannibal Rising, seeing as it fell right on its face onto a cement sidewalk, landing with a chunky splat
thank you for this audiovisual experience
😂😂😂
It sounds like Hannibal is struggling to maintain an erection
Hannibal Rising for his aunt (sorry)
I love how lectors actor manages to mimic Antony Hopkins movements and behaviour from the other movies and how scary he is, from a normal child into a insane young man is Incredible
Yeah I noticed that gaspard did a good job
Gaspard was a talented actor and took the role seriously paying attention to detail, he just didn't have much to work with in this cash grab of a film.
I can tell this is one of James’ least favorite movies based on how much he actively questions the movie lmao.
Love Gaspard Ulliel, despite the movie's weaknesses. It introduced me to him. Still can't believe he's gone.
Hannibal went against Sirius Black, Voldemort, Lizard and French Jack Black in the space of 3 movies, wow

The Kill Count audience that knows where James went to school, lived, met his wife, worked in LA, shopped in Burbank, hiked as a young adult, and how he got that scar on his shoulder: "yeah, never"
Your "Gotham villain" line had me bust out loud laughing. Its SO true though! Dude would fit in perfectly as the third wheel between that series' Penguin and Riddler 🤣

Detective: YOUR GUILTY HANNIBAL!!!
Hannibal: do you have any evidence?
Detective: Aw shit bruh naw.. your free to go
It's very funny when you think about it....a french cop in the 50's who have trouble arresting a foreign kid without evidence....lol
You joke but I’m pretty sure it was like that at some point.
HANNIBAL the series maybe one of the best dramas in TV history. No hyperbole. The acting, the characters, the production design, the imagery...all incredible.
I know you probably won't cover it, James, but those who haven't seen it yet...you need to seek it out and watch it.
After that glowing review, I certainly will.
The second season finale may be the single best episode of TV I’ve ever seen. I STILL have to take like 5 minutes to recover when I watch it.
Meh. disagree. its just not my thing personally.
It is a true work of art. ❤
Loved the series. I really wish we could've gotten at least one more season from it though.
They fixed this origin story on the show by making it more subtle honestly
This movie is interesting in its own right, but the book was definitely more memorable. Thank you for reviewing this franchise!
Say whatever you want, I love this movie, and the book is my number one favorite.
Rest in peace, Gaspard.
The world takes all kinds.
Pregnant women in ancient Mesopotamia would actually pray and make offerings to shrines of Pasuzu. Even though it was considered a malicious entity, the demon that was responsible for complications during childbirth was scared of Pasuzu. So by currying favor with it it would protect the woman during childbirth.

Hollywood's biggest problem is always trying to do.Prequels or sequels that we don't need or try to add onto the back story and then just take away from the mystery
Spot on. Prometheus is one of the very worst examples of this, trying to suggest that all that garbage happened before the original Alien movie. Nope.

Historical context a little lacking here. The Soviets forced Lithuania into annexation in 1940 along with the rest of the Baltic States. Germany occupied it in June 1941 when they invaded the USSR. The Soviets in 1944 were not liberating it from German occupation, they were returning to resume their own, which lasted until 1990, when it became the first Soviet republic to declare independence. It's still a tough period of history for the Baltics as there were many situations in which countrymen fought each other as part of the German and Soviet militaries respectively. Many at the time viewed the Germans as liberators and protectors rather than occupiers, at least for the first couple of years, and even to this day families are divided on how exactly to view that period of their history and there are often fights about it.
It's a deep and nuanced issue and obviously this isn't a history video so I wouldn't expect a detailed coverage of it, but it's worth pointing out here regardless I think.
That's not to mention the Forest Brother war that was going on during the occupations
I know Soviet soldiers and leaders unfortunately also did some atrocities and were not always good guys that propaganda dictated for so many years, but I hope no sane person to this day would consider na-zi's to be liberators, anything good they brought was taken from pain and tears of others and people that think na-zi regime was more desirable and pleasant than soviet one are heartless.
@@TheShut1 Today the majority opinion (from what I can tell) is just 'Nazis bad, Soviets bad' which given their history is completely valid. At the time, the Soviets were more about destroying local national identity whereas the Germans capitalised on promoting it, so it makes sense they had support.
However it is worth noting that Lithuania, unlike Latvia and Estonia, did not have its own SS division. Approximately 36,000 Lithuanians fought for the Wehrmacht, not including Lithuanian nationals with German ethnicity from the Memel region that was annexed by Germany in 1939.
Rising was actually the catalyst for my love of the Hannibal series. I was dating a fan of the films when this one was announced and hadn't seen any of them myself, so she set up a marathon where we watched all the Hopkins ones the night before going to see Rising.
This has nothing to do with the movie but during the segment when James says "you might say he was naive to the ways of the world" my musical-rotten brain was immediately transported to Hadestown
@hibiscuspetals02 same
James referenced Hadestown in...I believe the Emesis Blue video, so I assume that was intentional ;-)
RIP Gaspard. He did good! Fight me
I actually think Hannibal Rising helps explain a lot of why Hannibal behaves the way he does later in life.
It really feels like he massively over-corrected as a young man, and had to learn to reign it in and actually have discipline, instead of wildly indulging on a whim.
Really, this movie makes his older self even more impressive, because he went from this to a collected, stoic, highly intellectual master of deception.
“It’s like if Netflix made a Hannibal movie” 💀
Hannibal Rising suffered due to being forced I felt. Due to how different Hannibal Rising and the movies endings are it wrote the author into a bit of a corner
2:25 careful, james, it could happen... Eventually.
Yeah did not learn his lesson with thankskilling
Gaspard Ulliel was a cutie in this movie. So sad he died at a young age.
I would not be surprised if Harris intentionally wrote a meh screenplay so DeLaurentis would leave the Hannibal character behind
“Weeb out with a samurai sword” 😂😂
Gotta say I like these thumbnails better than the ones with the dark forest background
Hannibal Lecter is one of those characters who I think doesn't need a backstory, honestly.
At the end of the day, he's still a guy who kills people and eats them.
Yeah agreed.
This was terrible but Gong Li and Gaspard Ulliel are way better actors than most people on the counts, even if this wasn't either of their best performances.
4:21 At the very end of the novel Hannibal and Clarice not only run away together, they get a gigantic castle full of servants
So just to be clear, Hannibal Lecter owns not one, but TWO castles. That we know of.
Man, I should really look into becoming a therapist/museum curator/high-profile felon constantly on the run who has to be willing to end his career on a moment's notice.
here’s to hoping he covers the hannibal show one day, it’s so good
He said he won't because it's too much work
Unfortunately, he already said there’s too many hours of footage to cover the show, as the videos for just the movies take long enough to script, film, and edit 😢
Maybe they could podcast it if they get around to watching it?
"She's Incest, I MEAN INCENSED." Has to be the absolutely best joke I've ever heard in my life AAAAAAAAAAAA lmaaaaaaaaaaaooooo
I’m surprised it took James this long to start doing the Hannibal movies considering how iconic Hannibal is

i only like the first and the second hannibal books/movies. but its because this movie i knew about gaspard ulliel RIP.
(flashbacks to when Billy Loomis told Sidney in Scream that it's scarier when there's no motif such as not explaining why Hannibal likes to eat people)
...well that didn't age very good 0_0;
Yeah, but he also cites Norman Bates, who absolutely had a motive (a broken home and an unusual sexual identity).
I find it fascinating that filmakers want to make every villain have a tragic backstory. I feel like someone like Hannibal is the type of person who gets everything he wants and feels entitled to "the finer things in an extreme snobby way. He doesnt need a tragic backstory.
Hannibal in Hannibal Rising just feels like a psychotic young man who is inspired by Hannibal Lecter.
I hope the Hannibal series doesn’t end like this because this was such a unenjoyable terrible movie that made me want to forget about it as soon as I watched it
