Having Diego survive was honestly a genius move, since it subverts most people’s assumptions that unless somebody has plot armor or is set against another person where one of them is guaranteed to live, then that victim is gonna die.

It could've even been an interesting twist if Diego was among the Jigsaw survivors attending the meeting orchestrated by the charlatan who lied about his experiences with Jigsaw to sell books

@@pedromatias7608 I want all three, while Hoffman was the villain we didn’t get to see the interactions between jigsaw and his acolytes that much and that’s what I want them to explore. Their interpretations of jigsaws already flawed logic and how jigsaw tried to remedy that.
The Saw Franchise has a lot of lore, and seeing this movie be a thing between the first and second is incredibly interesting, hope we get another with more depth in Amanda.
I had the devastating realization that Amanda swapping Gabriella and Matteo's turns in an attempt to help Gabriella, ultimately caused her to die. If Gabriella went second as originally planned, Amanda would have been able to take her to the hospital while John was setting up Matteo's trap rather than her ending up in the middle of the chaos at the end with Cecilia and Parker.
This is true. But if that happened, Amanda would not have been able to get John and the little boy out of the blood-boarding trap if things went the same way without her being there.
@@NocturnewashereJohn Escaped himself if I remember completely. The shackles only needed some knob twists to get free. He could only escape once the bloodboarding stopped cause that meant that the other trap had activated.
I've read this over a few times, I don't really understand, how would it be any different if they swapped? wouldn't she have just died to the trap that killed Matteo:?
The acting ensemble was absolutely incredible in this film. I found Valentina particularly strong, you could feel that gigli saw through her acting and the visual effects.
Agreed, but that gigli saw trap was designed terribly. She cut off her leg, sucked out all the marrow goo, but still died because the machine was so dam slow
@@σεα-ψ9εnah she wasted like 30-60 seconds un the beginning specifically after Kramer said don't hesitate. I mostly blame Cecilia shitty ass coaching tho. I think that was the point tho. This movie showed John being a good role model for his philosphy while Cecilia literally got every answer wrong on the test.
@@Spectreffexexactly💯💯 you get it. Im surprised by how much people are saying theres was unfair when in reality they repeated to listen carefully and to not waste time which is what they both did. I do like that they gave Gabrielle an easier punishment though despite what happened
I enjoy that we got to see more of Amanda’s humanity and sympathy towards Gabriella because she understood Gabby was a victim of abuse like Amanda was. It also helps us understand more why Amanda was so conflicted about everything John put her through and seeing how Cecilia broke the rules makes her behavior and mental state in SAW 3 more understandable.
Fun Fact: Mateo’s trap was actually recycled from Saw II! Addison was originally going to be put in a waffle iron-like trap where she’d have to press her face against it to reach a key or an antidote. However, they replaced it with the Razor Box. I love seeing ideas that were originally scrapped get repurposed into stuff that’s used later.
One of the unsung heroes of this film is the Title Card. It’s the first time in the series where this movie didn’t open with a trap and kill, instead just focusing on John and his cancer diagnosis. It does an INCREDIBLE job at setting the tone for this film.
The whole emotional opening and touching scenes with Jon getting his hopes up and bonding with the people who were at the clinic was such a double edged sword since i knew the general plot of the film and that they were scammers. I was getting so frustrated knowing they were being so good at being disingenuous.

"To win your game, you have 3 minutes to solve string theory with a textbook from 1960 and a buzz saw slowly cutting the webbing between your fingers and toes. If you can't manage that, then clearly you don't have enough will to live."
@@MegaAwesome1121 Been a while since I've seen the Saw series, but what about Adam in the first one? I really don't see how he was supposed to get that bathtub key. (unless it was explained in another movie)
I felt so bad for Gabriella. She WON her trap fair and square and, by the rules, she should’ve been allowed to live but didn’t because SOMEONE wanted more money!
Gabriella should have broken her wrist and freed it first, letting her fall free onto the ground, invalidating the rest of the trap unless Kramer installed vertical panning to the gun, if not, she could have freely broken her ankle without fear of further exposure.
@@drthrayjaxymaxy8017I was also blown away she went for her ankle first. Not even because she would of dropped but because breaking your ankle with hammer has to hurt a hell of a lot more than your wrist 😂😂
@@XJIcequeen That might've hurt her pretty badly. She was a small woman and it's possible that a fall from that height could've been fatal or at least serious. A gymnast or a paratrooper might know how to land without getting seriously hurt but the average person is unlikely to know how.
I also really liked that this movie shows why Amanda is so jaded in 2 and especially 3. Gabriella's death shook her faith in John's lessons having a positive impact on others, and it's clear she saw her pre-Jigsaw self in Gabriella as well
i think the idea of not using de-aging tech on tobin bell was such an awesome move considering how sick his character really was. just makes u feel and root for his character kinda.
I believe Amanda's hair here is intended to be a transitional haircut to her nerve gas house hair, given it was a little bit longer and still as choppily cut
This movie offered a rare glimpse into the true mind of John Kramer, and really brought humanity to him for, at least in my opinion, the first time. Every actor did a fantastic job, and every kill was amazingly done, even if there weren't as many kills as I was expecting there to be, which may have actually been in the film's favor as it offered more time to bring the humanity and honesty to John and his story. Great video as always, James! Keep it up!
Right and proved why he technically lost it. He was betrayed and manipulated at his very lowest and thats even after what happened to his son and the other movie plots. It also shows why he has less sympathy for players later on becausethey are "soft" compred to these people in the game and their will to live. It explains why he also assumes they will all fail now because "its their nature andits doesnt change". Like with Cecelia or with Amanda, maybe after this she felt it wasnt fair for others to win the games because Gabriella still lost? Or it made her think no one deserves to survive more than Gabriella? I used to think Amanda's motivation was that she and Hoffman were jealous of eachother being able to "beat/win" the game. Ngl, this franchise is so complex and would be a great horror convo over wine lol 😅
It just doesn’t make sense to me,just few weeks ago he didn’t have problem with murdering innocent child and her mother, writing is all over the place with his character
@@yeeeaaahmayneee3808 who was that? You mean the female doctor and her daughter? The mom was murdered by Amanda and the daughter was saved (but her father died as well though.). Still, got a point

@@droplemmyTbf they have a pretty low success rate and the ones that Amanda makes are literally impossible to win. It's not everyday someone makes it, especially because people who you thought had plot armor, in fact....didn't.
I got to watch this movie in theaters and the only other person in my row was this little old lady that was all by herself. The looks of horror we shared with each other were ✨ hilarious✨
My bestie and I went to see this and we were laughing during Valentina's trap because she threw up (I have chronic nausea so I ALWAYS have puke bags) and as soon as she was done she asked me what to do with the bag. Throw it away of course! Did you expect to keep it??
Actually cancer treatment can cause someone to age physically, so Kramer looking older in this movie made him look like someone fighting cancer. My step-uncle is a cancer survivor and he looked like he's older than he actually is because of the treatment.
Heck the fact he looked slightly older meaning Bobby would make more sense than his actor trying to look younger by wearing backwards cap since he would have gone through cancer treatment at the time
I think the video was more comparing this movie to the third and fourth where John looks younger in the timeline (even thought he’s still fighting cancer etc)
I mean, maybe, but the issue isn't with how old he looks in general but how old he looks in relation to the previous films. His cancer was not *worse* at the time of diagnosis than when he was literally dying on an operating table in some filthy warehouse.
11:50 I love the editing of this shot. It’s the classic jumpy saw editing style but used for something completely different. It still conveys the same shock and confusion but for an emotional moment instead of a scary one. It’s so impressive how they balance the kind of campy and ridiculous plot with genuinely compelling emotional moments
Anyone who believes John isn’t a murderer doesn’t understand the point behind the series. It actively portrays John as a hypocritical murderer who is smart enough to manipulate people like Amanda, someone who took the lesson to heart, to join in his murdering ways while using his way with words to dilute and throw away the responsibility of his killings
@@KawaiiFemBoi Yes, of course he did. Kidnapping someone and putting them in a trap that is designed to kill you is killing someone. It's not even a moral dilemma
It's crazy to me that Tobin Bell did all this as an 80 year old man. It's easily his best performance to date. He's also really good in The Cello, a new movie, you all should definitely check it out.
Idk i feel that kinda downplays his performance in the original run.. He was always one of the best parts of every movie.. But I deffo agree this movie showcases him more by making him the lead character.. And Tobin deserves more movies to shine
The leg cutting is the first time a saw trap has made me look away. There’s been plenty of others where I’ve been like ‘eeeeww’ but I was actually covering my eyes this time
In my opinion, Mateo carving out parts of his head was worse. Cutting the brain itself wouldn't feel painful since, for some reason, our most important organ doesn't have any ability to do so. However, there's a bunch of other things in the way that he'd need to remove to get to it.
As someone who had extremely low expectations I was pleasantly surprised at how good this film was, and in my opinion the best since Saw III. I love how it feels like an early 2000s saw film but it's one of the most unique and different with its approach.
The only negative I'd give is that it's pretty much solidified the fact that this series cannot survive without Tobin Bell. Once he's not able to play Jigsaw anymore, this franchise is dead.
I love how they delve deeper into johns motives for doing this and the morality behind it also showing hes not completely evil as seen when he wants the young girl taken to the hospital and the wholesome interactions with the young boy
I really liked how they humanized John with this one. The poor guy was hoping for a cure only to get scammed out of 250k. As someone who also has a disease that could easily take me out if I'm not careful, I can really sympathize with him. Those assholes certainly got what was coming to them. Not so much with the other players from the rest of the series.
The people organizing the scam sure, but a lot of the others still didn't really deserve to get jigsaw'd especially if you consider that Cecilia kinda got off easy (unless she dies at the start of the next film)
Usually I like 99% hate ads but with Kill counts current way of connecting it with the episode and Zoran being his weird self I actually really enjoy them and actually watch them so thank you James and the crew
Personally I kind of hate it. Not the end result (clearly good work by the crew and writers), but it bothers me that creators have to expend so much creativity to do advertisers jobs for them on top of their own work. There's a reason this kind of sponsored content got phased out in TV and movies decades ago and just constantly reminds me of how little respect online creators get still.
Poor Valentina had the worst night. She was assxulted-almost rxped-that night, and just when she might have thought she was being saved, she was kidnapped, had to sever her own leg to save her life, only to fail and feel a few seconds of agony being decapitated. What an awful set of final hours 😢
Valentina's trap had me gaping in amazement the first time around, then cringing upon rewatch when I felt sympathy for the fact she almost beat it. Seeing her severed head and the rest of her body fall was absolutely nuts. Easily one of the best traps in the series, even if its feasibility in real life is extremely dubious.
@@noahmaldonado5461 Dubious as in questionable. I had doubts when I saw how loosely she applied the tourniquet, but it was still so primal and incredible to watch. Once I saw Mateo's trap in action, I knew they went full Hollywood.
Fun fact about Renata Vaca, the actress that plays Gabriela: She used to be a member of mexican youtube sketch channel "QuePario!", which has more than a millions subs. Seeing her in a movie like this after spending most of my childhood watching her in these funny sketches left me in awe.
The Amanda Young acting is truly amazing. We got to give Shawnee Smith some major props on showing the many sides of Amanda Young from the original movies. From her sympathy to a drug addict, to her trust in Jon Cramer for what he's done for her, to her spiral into madness with the death of a person she saw (hehe) a bit of herself in. Truly an exceptional character
It's always great to see Saw back on the kill count as well as seeing Tobin Bell back, I read recently that Tobin Bell didn't have a great time doing Saw 1, he mentioned a lot about his experience about how he had to lay on a floor a lot and one saddest thing he said was he had to eat alone because nobody wanted to eat with him
I love how this movie gives Johns character a bit more humanity. He didn’t want to have to murder an innocent child to live, he seems to truly want to only punish those who are wrongdoers.
Out of all the Saw movies. This is my favorite one, hands down. As a cancer survivor, I related so much with his character & the word "Hope" When it was given & taken.
Amanda's reaction to Gabriela's death is kinda funny because if you apply real life rules to the Radiation Trap Gabriela was dead as soon as she started getting skin symptoms, at that point your internal organs are all effectively dead
Fun fact: when cencilia mentioned that she knew john there actually was a deleted scene that shows cencilia looking up john kramer during there phone call but again like the saw 6 flashback it was deleted lol
Big props to James, Zoran, and the DeadMeat crew for doing that Make a Wish for Carswell (sorry if I spelled that wrong). Big hugs to you, Carswell! Family forever!
I have rarely been as excited in a movie theatre as I was when Cecilia and Parker got trapped in the upstairs room and Hello Zepp started playing. Fuckin awesome plot twist with an even more awesome soundtrack!
This was everything I could’ve wanted and more in a Saw movie. A story with an actual soul instead of an excuse for the violence, simple and efficient character development, and a surprising amount of emotional gravitas. I also like how the antagonists are the worst of the worst, so the violence actually feels pretty justified as it’s easy to not really feel any empathy towards them. And of course, seeing Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith back as John and Amanda being front and center for the first time was a delight. I really hope we see a follow up to this still set before the second movie as well.
Imo this was easily the best Saw since the original. Tobin Bell gave his best performance yet and his chemistry with Shawnee is incredible. I went to the midnight premiere of this movie and my entire theater erupted into applause when Hoffman showed up at the end.
I love how the imagined trap is actually a great picturing of John's psyche. he doesn't picture his victims surviving but rather picturing what will happen when they lose.
I think that speaks heavily to his mindset; he genuinely believed that he wasn't killing people, and that everyone had a chance to live. Saw II explores that somewhat when Detective Matthews said "putting a gun to someone's head and forcing them to pull the trigger is still murder", but they never really explore that again before Jigsaw dies.
I can’t imagine your feeling when make-a-wish reached out to you asking if they could have Carswell visit! You guys are awesome! Your kill counts are what got me here but your journey is what keeps me! Keep it up!
16:33 i have no clue why but what Amanda says is just funny to me "you'll make it so long as you keep your head" when she is in a trap that is going to cut her head off
Dear James, Chelsea, and Zoran, Please keep the "Weird Kill Counts" going. There are so many horror and horror adjacent games and other media you could do! Plus I personally have loved the strike Era kill counts as being refreshing and cool!
Welcome to the set Carswell! Good luck on your directing/writing/acting journey! I also got to say one thing I love about Saw is they never bother making the lighting look great or anything like that. They intentionally make everything look dirty and disgusting. It's how John sees himself and his cancer, it's how he views those he puts in the traps. The budget goes to what matters. The actors, and the gore!
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen in the theater this year. I remember when me and my oldest brother went to see it, we saw a lady and what looked like her daughter walk into the theater and we were wondering if the mother knew what movie she brought her kid to. Once we got to the first trap of the movie, that being the eyeball trap, they left realizing that Saw X wasn't for kids.
I've been waiting for this episode after the SAG-AFTRA came to a resolution. Thank you for your solidarity James and the Dead Meat crew, and keep being the good people you all are
The Eyeball trap gave me reverse beatrap vibes in 2004 and I am so here for it!! The atmosphere, the camera angles, the lighting, the music, Johns classic "I want to play a game", the speed shots, the intensity. I hope SAW XI keeps that trend going. Also, Valentina deserved to live! She literally got through her trap with ease! But it is a SAW movie so nothing is fair in the world of Jigsaw. Paulette Hernandez (Valentina) earns my SCREAM QUEEN award of 2023!
Valentina and Mateo deserved to live. She had already cut off her whole leg and he cut out a piece of his own brain, but the slow machinery was the reason why they didn’t live.
Can’t believe James forgot to mention that the actor who plays Parker is a previous killcount Vet. He played towers (the main villain) in Joe Lynch’s MayheM
saw this with a random roommate when i first got to uni, loved hearing about the passion that went behind it, the crew involved clearly had a lot of love for the franchise.
The twist took me by surprise so well. I reacted in the theater like an OT football score, I was shocked in such a way I didn't expect. And somehow, that twist still gives me chills even after I've watched it many times.

I believe Amanda's hair here is intended to be a transitional haircut to her nerve gas house hair, given it was a little bit longer and still as choppily cut
That what I assumed.
Exactly
Exactly, cus her hair in Saw 2 is not much longer then here.
John is not the best hairstyler
Although this makes sense, it also would’ve been equally acceptable to believe she cut her hair AFTER this movie so we could avoid the little boy look

But isn't that scientifically convenient?
Yikes.
I mean, maybe, but the issue isn't with how old he looks in general but how old he looks in relation to the previous films. His cancer was not *worse* at the time of diagnosis than when he was literally dying on an operating table in some filthy warehouse.

Completely agree
i'd say second best since 3, because 6 was defo my favourite saw movie ever
The only negative I'd give is that it's pretty much solidified the fact that this series cannot survive without Tobin Bell. Once he's not able to play Jigsaw anymore, this franchise is dead.
I love how they delve deeper into johns motives for doing this and the morality behind it also showing hes not completely evil as seen when he wants the young girl taken to the hospital and the wholesome interactions with the young boy
Yeah take her to the hospital after blasting her with enough radiation to cause burns within minutes...
I really liked how they humanized John with this one. The poor guy was hoping for a cure only to get scammed out of 250k. I really hope we see a follow up to this still set before the second movie as well.
murder is still not justifiable
Imo this was easily the best Saw since the original. Tobin Bell gave his best performance yet and his chemistry with Shawnee is incredible. I went to the midnight premiere of this movie and my entire theater erupted into applause when Hoffman showed up at the end.
i still think james's saw series is one of the most important creative works of the last decade
You won’t find many people disagreeing with that
I love how the imagined trap is actually a great picturing of John's psyche. he doesn't picture his victims surviving but rather picturing what will happen when they lose.
“Killing is distasteful!” says the guy who kidnaps people and puts them in literal death traps.
i didnt shoot the guy the bullet did
I think that speaks heavily to his mindset; he genuinely believed that he wasn't killing people, and that everyone had a chance to live. Saw II explores that somewhat when Detective Matthews said "putting a gun to someone's head and forcing them to pull the trigger is still murder", but they never really explore that again before Jigsaw dies.
