My favorite thing about Spiral was when the official Twitter account got hacked and an image was posted with a buff Jigsaw with a thong posing on his tricycle
When he said “John Kramer didn’t target cops” he meant he didn’t target cops specifically, as in he didn’t go after the police force, or any collective group for that matter. He targeted individuals based on their actions, whether they be cops or not. The new Spiral Killer specifically targeting the police force does not fit Kramer’s MO, nor any of his disciples.
Didn't john Kramer in saw 2 specifically go after a group of people that where all framed by 1 cop? And also in at least the first 3 he goes after almost every cop or detective that tries to arrest him. I know it's not a specific police force or anything and it doesn't fit perfectly but I'm just saying it might be a nitpick at a nitpick of a dumb line.
@@victorweiss2833 They JUST said he didn't EXCLUSIVELY target cops. He didn't EXCLUDE cops, he just didn't make a literal pig-cop puppet and exclusively kill cops, it's not that complicated. Also it's worth remembering these aren't random civillians AND it's been a long time since Saw VII, everyone presumably knows that Kramer specifically died in Saw III and there were accomplices with different motives. Imo the biggest flaw with this Saw besides length is the twist being telegraphed. It would have been nice to have never actually seen a kill, only follow Chris Rock's character as he tries to piece it together from the results and giving us flashbacks to them, that way it's perfectly reasonable both to show us the Rookie dying AND him to be wrong, especially when it decides to emphasis how much he's losing it after the Rookie dies. I think this could have been the best Saw since the second if it'd gotten another draft or two.
Yeah, at least this serial killer had a halfway decent motive as opposed to "this dude smoked his whole life" and "this grieving mother is handling the death of her child the way I want her to".
@victorweiss2833 the only police officer that John targeted for being a dirty cop was Mathews. Other cops that were targeted were targeted because they were either convenient and fit John’s ideological requirements or in Hoffman’s case he simply needed to get rid of them. Every cop that was targeted except Mathew’s was due to things that didn’t necessarily involve their profession. You could argue Kerry and Riggs, but ultimately it was more about their obsession than their choice of career.
I appreciate your parody of “Ultimate Showdown” for Freddy vs Jason Edit: 22:51 is the timestamp where it starts, but please watch the entire video first, y’all know how hard James works on these.
Banks death was probably the most disturbing death in the movie. Getting the blood drained out of him for hours, "set free", and then reset into the trap as he begs for help until shot while his son has to watch. Other deaths were messed up but his was the worst
What stop wearing your blinders; the man literally said he didn’t like the movie but was paid to promote it. Now that the moneys over he doesn’t like the film lol
Ehh as much as I watched James since Year 1DM, he def changed his motives/approach. I understand its his job, so paid promotions make sense, but how he's approached certain movies within the past half year has been lacklustered. Train to Busan really upset me because he really only cared about behind the scenes, he put crazy work into Zombie Land 2 and tried so hard to count kills, On Busan he just goes "I dont see them die on screen". It was a train filled with people, and 1 zombie, but then it becomes a full train of zombos....We all know they died. He built his channel off counting kills, everything amazing like bts and bloopers were always extra. I understand things change, but I definitely think a focus on "Kill Counts" should be the....Kill Count.
I understand the impulse to show the gory results of a trap killing someone, but the scenario of surviving a trap that's not guaranteed to kill someone feels a little underused. We have Amanda in the Reverse Bear Trap (EDIT: forgot she had to kill someone, oops), then two characters beating unsurvivable traps (Strahm and Hoffman), but almost every Jigsaw survivor was paired with other people who had to die in their trap. I think the reason people saw the the first film as more sophisticated was that it had scary scenarios without feeling compelled to show the worst outcomes of every single one, and a character being a survivor of their Jigsaw experience automatically makes them more interesting in the plot going forward.
While I do agree with you, I honestly think that the point of the traps in this film were to appear to be survivable but actually is completely impossible to survive. John Kramer's motive was to make people realise the value of living whereas this guy just wants to punish dirty cops. If they survive, how would it change anything in a positive way other than putting a huge target on the guys back? As an example of the perceived survival in these traps, the finger pulling one is impossible to survive as the person was complying with the task completely but a short break caused him to be electrocuted which I think would have happened either way. I do agree with you in that the fact that there are several survivors of jigsaws traps makes each trap more valuable as we don't know how it's going to go but this film is more like if John died and Amanda completely took over as she had conflicting motives. Sorry that this is off topic but I don't have anyone irl to share my theories with😂
@@LunaBeth97 i agree 100% with your comparison to Amanda. These traps can seem either ameteurish or rigged against the victims because they’re dirty cops. I’d like to see someone survive in the next one though!
The Saw movies are a victim of caring more about the gore and creating the absurdly over the top nonsense lore that people gravitated to in the first couple films. Its a shame thay we'll likely never see a more grounded and believable Saw style of story.
"Today it is you who will be railroaded" "The tide of justice is rising around you" "Your career was shattered like glass" Spiral might have changed a lot, but at least it kept the ridiculous metaphors of the originals.
"Feels good to be back in the old Saw trap again. Feels like a warm horror hug." I love this line because I've watched a few sequels that get it right and it does feel like a warm hug.
I think the “Jigsaw didn’t target cops” line meant that he didn’t SPECIFICALLY target cops- his targets were anybody who did wrong in his eyes, it just so happened that a lot of people who did wrong were dirty cops, in contrast to this killer who is only killing cops.
@@SniperDiplomat The only cops Jigsaw killed were Detective Sing from Saw 1 and a couple SWAT officiers from Saw 2. He never purposely targeted cops. As for the other cops like Detective Kerry, Officer Rigg and Detective Matthews, they were killed by Amanda and Hoffman.
Honestly I actually really enjoyed spiral honestly, I think rock's humor falling flat kind of helps the character feel more like that cop who's trying to be likable but fails. I also found the style to be intense and fun
Chris Rock falls flat in some scenes, but he feels authentic thanks to his enthusiasm for the franchise. I loved the film, the lack of shaky cam, and the shots. Look forward to the sequel
I just really hope they go back to the trap plot/cop plot set up, as much as this can be a fun movie I don't watch a Saw film for drama. GUVE ME THAT INDUSTRIAL MURDER BABY
Chris Rock's character actually AGREEING to join this movie's Jigsaw was the most interesting part and the fact that they immediately squander it frustrates me to no end. Like we constantly hear of Jigsaw's many accomplices and see flashbacks of them, but a real time partnership forming would've been something new at least.
I saw it as him agreeing just to put his partner at ease, so that Rock will arrest him once the guy’s guard is down. Joining Jigsaw seems to be out of character since despite knowing how corrupt his coworkers were, Rock still attempted to save them even after they treated him like shit.
Just because you don’t like a movie doesn’t mean you can just dismiss everything that other people have made. You show this perfectly. Like how I’m not a fan of natural disaster movies, I can still realise if something is still good even if I don’t personally like it. I’m glad you highlight this :).
Proper closing to a Saw film that shows the antagonist getting their way and is definitely a homage to the first Saw ending. Just wished for myself the ending hit the beat that it needs but I am welcome to seeing a continuation of this storyline with more plot substance and dialogue and character that breathes life into the world setting.
Protip to any future writers: If you don't want your audience to immediately figure out who your mystery villain is. Don't give him a last name that's pronounced Shank!
This movie wasn't terrible, but I hate that it was easy to guess the antagonist from the trailer alone. Plus, the skinning scene solidified that it was definitely him. And how can they introduce Lawrence Gordon as the OG without continuing?!
Yeah as soon as he came on screen I guessed it was him, and I guessed pretty much everything after, especially the crying baby scene that was obvious it was fake crying, I literally guessed the exact details of it, this movie was painfully predictable.
That's my problem with most "teaser" trailers these days, be it for movies or video games. They just spoil too much to generate hype that when the thing comes out, half of the plot you know already.
@@NokoFace or if its a particularly bad movie, the trailer shows all the good parts, or in the case of suicide squad i dont even think half the trailer was in the movie bc the full movie was so boring compared to how the trailer made it look
The little parody of The Ultimate Showdown by Lemon Demon at the end made me so happy, I love Neil Cicierega's music. He's a major inspiration. I've been binging this series since one of the videos showed up on my recommended, it's pretty fun to have playing in the background while I do housework. This video may be a year old but keep up the excellent work, guys! Do remember to take breaks when you need them though.
Reason being is cause these traps William devised suited the person in them. Least we have seen that with the puppet trap and finger trap, he has some ingenuity skills like what Jigsaw had. We might see more in the future.
@@xx_redwood_xx9737 True it ain’t hard to test things. But again, you gotta make sure it is constructed to function how you want it to work. Can’t just build stuff on the fly and something goes wrong in the process. That does get you to think what would happen with all the traps in the franchise if not fully tested.
Gotta say, that song parody for Ultimate Showdown at the end of the video was actually really awesome! It is so awesome to 1) be reminded of that classic youtube gem of a song and 2) show some love to it in a honestly really well written parody. The video was great too but I wanted to definitely give some love to that tease for the next episode. Much love! God bless!
I actually busted out laughing at how amazing of a reference it was. Full on nostalgia trip while being simultaneously dumb yet entertaining. A true classic RUclips moment.
It was immediately obvious Schenk was behind everything when he tells Zeke that Zeke's dad is "the reason for all of this; he's why I wanna do this in the first place"
i love that the movie itself doesn't play the identity of william as the real twist, like, instead the music starts playing when will explains why he did it and that zeke's father was the main reason of how the corruption started in the police station.
@@snnnaaaaaakeeeee4470 Idk I'm never really thinking about what the ending is going to be when watching a movie so I never predict what's going to happen.
Not always. I seriously doubt that woman who hacked her own arm off would want anything to do with him afterwards (I know that was technically Hoffman, but still).
I think the “Kramer didn’t target cops” line meant “Kramer didn’t solely target people *because* they were cops. Some of his victims just happened to be cops.” Completely different
If anyone’s targeted cops, it was those working or worked for him. Amanda targeted Eric Matthews for placing evidence that got her thrown in jail. She then placed Kerry in an unsolvable game that got her killed since she probably knew of this but didn’t say anything. Mark Hoffman put Daniel Rigg through a test to teach him a lesson in procedural but he ended up failing, costing him and Eric’s life. Hoffman then killed Strahm after he was getting too close to unveiling his secret, then killed 3 FBI agents immediately after finding out, then set his sights on Matt Gibson for protecting Jill Tuck. After refusing to hand her over, Hoffman killed Gibson, whatever was left of Rigg’s SWAT team and Gibson’s entire unit. Finally, Logan set his sights on Brad Halloran for a variety of reasons. He took bribes, planting evidence, let the worst criminals walk free (one of which who killed Logan’s wife) causing an array of aggravated crimes throughout the city. If anyone didn’t seem to respect Jigsaw’s morals or ideals… Mark Hoffman seemed like a lost cause from the start.
I really want to see this blend into the older Saw movies because imo, the new killer is like a combo of Hoffman, Amanda, AND Jigsaw. They have the "My methods are creating good results" of Jigsaw, the "I am the person who rightfully judges" of Hoffman, and the "They don't deserve to live so let's rig their game" of Amanda. Each trap feels winnable but also doesn't. The targets are deserving of being tested but they aren't set up to properly learn their lesson. I think that is expanded upon and if it bleeds into OG Saw lore harder, it would reinvigorate the franchise to new and higher potential Heights. Ending here feels like leaving the door open for an incoming guest but not knowing their ETA or if their dangerously unkempt transportation did them in
I can't express how happy it made me to have you mention Chris Ramsey's involvement in this film. I watched a few of his own videos about the experience and it seemed like he and Darren really hit it off!
I think the issue James is having with the movie is that he’s seeing it as a Saw movie. It’s not, it’s in the same universe, but it’s not a sequel. I do, however, agree that Chris Rock’s comedy fell a little flat. It felt forced. The suspense and overall mystery throughout the film was very well done. I
I agree specially the twilight part. Man, that's where i realized he's trying so hard to put some humor around the movie. But i love the forest gump part.
The most common theme throughout your Kill Counts, aside from the deaths, is the intrusion from the MPAA (now MPA). I would love to see a podcast with you and friends talking about the MPAA and the effect it has had on horror movies. Also, consider what would happen if movie theaters decided not to honor the rating system and just show movies regardless of rating. It could make a good discussion.
Fun fact: he first trap is almost impossible to beat seeming as if you drop down and rip your tongue out you will bleed out in minutes, before you can get help
god i missed james breaking down the behind the scenes of every kill. really makes you appreciate the work and effort put into these movies, and the work james puts looking up all this shit lol
I mean, TO BE FAIR, the man aside from the first part where Chris's character is processing the situation as he told it to him, he kept his distance from Rock, he would have saw it coming from like at least 8 feet or more away since he walked away from Chris.
If I had a nickel for every time Chris rock played a cop that’s hated because they did what they thought was right, that also jokes a lot, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
I’ll say this about Spiral: It’s the perfect gateway Saw film. A new generation will be introduced to Saw and this film basically tells them: “Okay, this is the gist of what you’ll be getting yourself into should you wish to explore this franchise further. Now go back and watch the ones that are actually good.”
I never was a fan of horror movies but after watching dead meat for the past 3-4 years I became such a raging fan. James changed my whole point of view on movies
@@appratows6795 lol nah dude, i remembered the trailer, unless you're talking about yourself... but you should've said "hold onto your butts", since we're all on a Sam L kick. XD
Ok I saw this video the first day it came out and I saw the movie right before, I honestly love that these deaths actually feel necessary because everyone who died actually did something bad, unlike in some of the saw movies where the kills felt unnecessary, like in 3D the first kill was a toxic relationship girl...but in spiral most of the kills felt necessary because they killed, caused kills, or hurt people
I think that the adding of comedy after the script was written and having Rock’s character be the only one doing comedic one liners killed the whole thing.
@@chilliinsanity6898 seems he was a little too prideful in his work. Can't write a movie script like a book, and the same goes for jokes. Can't write jokes in movies like in standup comedy. It's a completely different medium.
With regards to the Glass Blower not giving enough time, William wanted Zeke to just let Dunleavy stand there and die, so not giving him enough time makes sense in that context. It was personally my favorite trap of the film!
I really just want to point out how amazing it is that James creates new lines and footage for each of his sponsors instead of repeat videos like a lot of other channels do. Such a small thing, but it really just goes to show how much he cares. ❤️❤️
I love how James reviews horror movies even IF he doesn’t like them or if they’re boring, he respects others opinions on the movie, talks about how the crew put so much time into it, goes into the Behind The Scenes of the movie he’s talking about, and he counts the kills for us as well, James is probably the nicest, funniest, and the best horror reviewer on RUclips. I personally do not like this movie, the kills are boring compared to the original Saw movies, and the deaths are far apart, I like Saw 3D, if we’re talking about kills, if we’re talking about favorite movie in general I’d say Saw 2.
It's how he makes his money. Even if he didn't like a movie, others would and if it's popular enough he would be leaving money on the table by not making a video
Truth! Though my favorites are 1 and 7 (3D) Saw II is a rare sequel, in that it is arguably better than the 1st. (Arguably! 😂) It's definitely just as good.
the twist wasnt too bad but chris rock couldve shut up with the non funny comedy Hell Samuel L Jackson in this was Epic so honestly i give it a 6.5 out of 10
Ykw this is a much better version of any movie re cap channels I've seen so far. Your funny as hell plus high light the kills. Other people just explain the story. You do more than the others; what I love about you. Keep it up pal
I LOVED this movie. My only gripe is that Tobin Bell wasn't even given a cameo, but that does nothing to deter how much I like this movie. Looking forward to how the story continues!
But he's right john kramer didn't target cops. He targeted many different individuals. He was stating that the new killer targets cops while John's targets were more vast.
Yeah, the issue is more how the line is written. "John Kramer didn't target cops" implies he NEVER went after cops in all of the movies. Should have been "John Kramer didn't JUST target cops"
@@B1998-u6i Like someone said below, tecnically John never targetted cops in that way. The sole exception was Hoffmann and being a cop wasn't the reason John chose him. His accomplices targetted cops, not him.
@@leandroteixeira33 There was also the Cop in 4 who served as the main trap plot of the film, s well as the cop in the same movie who got his head crushed by blocks of ice. Again though, they both would have been just fine had the first cop done the task properly instead of trying to be Superman.
“Modern Saw Kill Counts would be about 40 minutes. Let’s not do that though, alright?” Leaving this here for a few years when we inevitably get a Saw Recount.
Why would we get a Saw recount? Those videos still hold up fairly well today, unlike Friday the 13th. And also unlike Friday the 13th the Saw counts didn't start the channel so they aren't as special.
Hey James! I’ve been a big fan for awhile just wanted to tell you how much I love your channel as well as the podcast. You and Chelsea are killing it (no pun intended lol) we all appreciate you so much!
21:19 That's a great shot of Chris Rock screaming. Whatever went down with the plot of this film (they can keep changing the movie title, but if it's the same production crew...it's going to be the same film in the end), I'm really impressed with Rock's efforts, really solid dramatic work!
I personally really liked Spiral, but I get where you're coming from. I think the traps were a little silly and the twist a bit obvious. But I liked the different direction, it was pretty good.
Yes lol I'm just seeing this now and the first guy lolol he ruined people's lives with his lies and now he's really sweating it 😥 knowing he deserves it trying Soo hard to escape his tongue 😜 lol All you could say is Oops 🤭🤣 bye-bye sir 💀 lol wouldn't you agree with me?
I enjoyed Spiral myself, but I also admit that I'd like a Saw movie that felt more like some of the originals. That said, I did REALLY enjoy how the traps in Spiral felt pretty symbolic and weren't as trivial as some of the other movies.
I liked the saw traps better at the start of the series. When they could've been solved without self mutilation, if they pay attention. And when it didn't involve other people (choose between two, either you suffer or the other, etc). That made Jigsaw more sympathetic, so to say. Loved your rendition of the 'Ultimate Showdown' at the end.
I hope James mentions this fun fact on the Freddy vs Jason kill count. The boiler room fight scene features Rey mysterio was Freddy Krueger’s stunt double.
For me, Spiral has very strong Venom vibes, where its objectively not a great movie, but has great moments, the people who liked it loved it, and kind of a romance. I really liked Spiral a lot
The entire plot of the second SAW revolved a corrupt cop trying to save his son from Jigsaw who had him trapped in a house with people who went to jail after he set them up with planted evidence.
Honestly this didn't seem like a bad movie to me. It was good in its own way. Hopefully there's an unrated version released some time with all those scenes put back in or something like that
personally in my opinion if it were not part of the saw franchise (and didn't follow the concept entirely) i think it would have been a good standalone. might just be me though
@@_mariri that is if it was simply titled Spiral and minus the "Live or die" quote then yeah it most certainly in my eyes would've been a good indie film
Same, I went in knowing that most saw fans hated it, but I didn't mind it that much. Really my only complaint is Chris Rocks comedic attempts. They clash with the movies style
I very much appreciate still getting Sunday Kill Counts every now and then, especially after the stuff with the Fear Street's. The work doesn't go unnoticed.

Every cop that was targeted except Mathew’s was due to things that didn’t necessarily involve their profession. You could argue Kerry and Riggs, but ultimately it was more about their obsession than their choice of career.

Yeah it was nice.
Banks death was probably the most disturbing death in the movie. Getting the blood drained out of him for hours, "set free", and then reset into the trap as he begs for help until shot while his son has to watch. Other deaths were messed up but his was the worst
I really, really dig James' honesty. The way he explained his feelings on the movie was nothing short of well thought out and 100% real.

@@dream_killer-cc3vr glad you see it for how it is
Ehh as much as I watched James since Year 1DM, he def changed his motives/approach.
And let's all acknowledge the fact that he was still happier than he was did Thankskilling 3! He should never be that sad again.
all i did was laugh everytime i heard ( i want to play a game ) it sound like some fat kid behind a mic tryna threat someone
I see you everywhere man. Where am I going to see you next thicc pawg teen twerk videos
No one surviving the traps really took something from this film

I think the “Jigsaw didn’t target cops” line meant that he didn’t SPECIFICALLY target cops- his targets were anybody who did wrong in his eyes, it just so happened that a lot of people who did wrong were dirty cops, in contrast to this killer who is only killing cops.

How did we go from “new Jigsaw isn’t an engineer so tongue vice” to “huge marionette man with cool deployable shotgun and arm-raising action!”?

I think the “Kramer didn’t target cops” line meant “Kramer didn’t solely target people *because* they were cops. Some of his victims just happened to be cops.” Completely different
Could have been worded differently though
Plus, wasn't the cop used as an example captured by Amanda and not John?
exactly!
Indeed
Ending here feels like leaving the door open for an incoming guest but not knowing their ETA or if their dangerously unkempt transportation did them in
He's using John's ideas for his own use. Technically it's only related to Jigsaw because he's basically a copycat.
I can't express how happy it made me to have you mention Chris Ramsey's involvement in this film. I watched a few of his own videos about the experience and it seemed like he and Darren really hit it off!

I enjoyed Spiral myself, but I also admit that I'd like a Saw movie that felt more like some of the originals. That said, I did REALLY enjoy how the traps in Spiral felt pretty symbolic and weren't as trivial as some of the other movies.
I feel like spiral could be a good starting point. If a sequel comes along it'll be interesting to see how they increase the
stakes/hype
I liked the saw traps better at the start of the series. When they could've been solved without self mutilation, if they pay attention. And when it didn't involve other people (choose between two, either you suffer or the other, etc). That made Jigsaw more sympathetic, so to say.
Loved your rendition of the 'Ultimate Showdown' at the end.
Yes saw is better when there is actually a way out or some puzzle to figure out
You're so dang funny. I love how you adapt to each movie by using a theme. The explanation of scenes and overall production is amazing
I hope James mentions this fun fact on the Freddy vs Jason kill count. The boiler room fight scene features Rey mysterio was Freddy Krueger’s stunt double.
James is a huge wrestling fan. I would be surprised if he didn't mention it.
@@BoltUnagi same.
At least Chris can get some good ideas for his revenge against Will.
knew it
Honestly this didn't seem like a bad movie to me.
THANK YOU. I really enjoyed this movie, watched it for the third time yesterday.
The director talking about the fingers looks so happy to be there. Man can’t put down the pad to give a response that shows pride in the movie.
I very much appreciate still getting Sunday Kill Counts every now and then, especially after the stuff with the Fear Street's. The work doesn't go unnoticed.
This channel is a cure for depression. I love you James lmao. Keep doing what you’re doing 😂😂 been watching this shit since the OG kill counts (around the time you first did the original Saw kill counts)
I actually want to hear a full version of that “Ultimate Showdown” parody you did for Freddy vs Jason.
Yeah. it was great - and much better than "Spiral" or C. Rock!
Yeah i'd listen to that alot
And here I thought that no one remembered The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny by Lemon Demon any more
"Zeke has another jump cut hissy fit and tries to figure out- AWW PIG"
THAT KILLED ME
James: rocks jokes are bad
Also James: he couldnt FINGER it out

I like how you say pig when one shows up unexpectedly in these movies
The background music and James's voice are so soothing. It legit helps me fall asleep at night. Background sound helps me sleep.
We need a Hostel kill count. I’ve been waiting far too long to see an Eli Roth kill count...
"wurst vacation"
spookyrice already beat him to it
Email the request to them. They won’t see it here.
