sadly and lawfully hes not from what ive heard, the definition of rape (according to what they read, i think they said from the book of law or whatever) is "forcefully penetrating a woman without consent" or something, well they meant that only a rapist could be a man forcefully penetrating a vagina WITH a penis. i think i read that this now was renewed to a more gender equal definition that all genders can be rapists.

I remember seeing this movie in theatres. The reaction that everyone had during this movie was amazing, it was complete silence during the intense parts. You could tell everyone was on the edge of their seats. Until it got to the turkey baster scene.
this movie gave a new meaning to the theme "horror" it doesnt use gore. but it is horrific. the scene with the turkey baster made everyone i know gasp when they realised what was coming
It's amazing I remember the turkey baster so vividly and in the theatres everybody had a loud reaction as well. Don't breathe will always be the turkey baster movie to me
I love this movie. Its great, intense and imo a really interesting concept to make the seemingly disadvantaged person the most terrifying one in the room. But I also hate how some people try to defend the old guy's behavior. Like, yes, being a burglar is awful but it does NOT compare to keeping someone locked up, forcefully "fertilising" them and forcing them to birth you a child
Thank you! I'm seeing so many comments defending him. "Rocky, Money & Alex tried to rob an OLD, BLIND VETERAN WITH A DEAD CHILD!" Like??? You expect me to feel sorry for him? Being elderly, serving the US, having a deal kid & having a disability will never excuse kidnapping, torturing & impregnating a young woman against her will. Shoot, they even acknowledge that they'll get 10-15 years in prison for this robbery if caught. That's NOTHING compared to what Norman would have gotten, had Cindy been found & saved from his basement. Morally & legally standing, Norman is the worst here.
@@peachyqueen4399 Yeah, i can agree with people saying that it's hard to root for those burglars when they're trying to rob a blind elderly guy but the moment the plot twist with the pregnant imprisoned girl happens EVERYONE should understand how much more fucked up it is and it's scary to see that it's not the case for many people
I love the fact that James doesn’t mention 13 reasons why (his most famous role) when talking about Dylan. It is hilarious to me, and I loved the goosebump movie so glad he gave it a shout out
@Isaiah G-M yes, Wallows are great!! I have been following the band on and off since 2011. They had a song in a Haunting Hour thing, which is where I discovered Dylan and been a fan ever since.

@@longsnake5758 it did kinda seem like that lol like long shots are cool but doing it the whole movie seems like a bit much, id still like to watch it at some point tho
First of all: Damn, James. You lookin' good, boy. Second, and more seriously: is it difficult to always have a relevant shirt for every Kill Count? Are there any that you felt were harder to get than others?
@@ZyrusSmith Thanks for the response! It makes me wonder all the more if there have been any particular Kill counts more challenging than the others to find attire for.
Eh I still feel like he was justified. That rich whore murdered his daughter and then walked free because American justice system only lets you go if you got money. So he just deployed some basic justice. A daughter for a daughter.
To make the old man an even more evil villain, while also adding in more realism here: I imagine the woman being locked in the basement was being force fed, as she probably wouldn't want to eat good given to him. At best, that means having a tube forcefully shoved down her throat, likely causing internal damage, vomiting, etc. With that and the added stress, and no medical help, and the man being old, the chances of a miscarriage are pretty high. She likely was raped repeatedly, miscarried, and was left to bleed out. And since he used a turkey baister, the rape would have been extremely painful physically, and likely had to be done multiple times over several months to get her pregnant. Lastly, either the woman would have died during childbirth, or the old man would have killed her afterwards. Meaning the man that was made a hero in the next movie was a murder, rapist, kidnapping monster who tortured an innocent woman over the course of several months.
She was not innocent. It has been stated that she used her money and connections to escape responsibility for the crime, which is one of the reasons Norman carried out his revenge in the first place. It turned him into a vengeful nihilist who lost his belief in justice and morality.
James, I know you hate people watching the Kill Counts instead of the movie but I just want to say thank you for not glossing over the full reveal of how awful the blind man is. If I had gone into this movie completely unaware and seen that stuff, it likely would have been extremely upsetting to me and ruined my entire day. So thank you for acknowledging it and handling it with grace and respect to make it less upsetting to watch. I really appreciate it.
Yeah, it didn’t bother me to begin with but now that I think about it, it really has no point. It comes out of nowhere, which might just be there to ruin you’re hope but it’s not needed. It’s not like they needed him gone for the end, either, as an ending with rocky and Alex would be kinda sweet
This movie and 2003 texas chainsaw massacre piss me off cuz like a lot of other horror movies it follows the rule of the "noble" white girl who more often then not is the whole reason the plot is happening must be the sole survivor 2003 TCM Girl: guys we have to make sure this random girl who just committed suicide in our van gets proper a proper burial or whatever Literally everyone else: NO! Its sad but lets go home Girl: gives boyfriend(the driver) the if you ever want to fuck me again you will ignore common sense to accomodate my snowflake sense of morality End of movie: Girl lone survivor :
Legit had a nightmare that the old man was hunting me down and just, kept showing up wherever I went and immediately I knew I could just avoid him since he was blind, but then he'd just look right in my direction and start strolling on up to me. Was absolutely awful
This old guy is like a spider in the way that he someone can sense movement perfectly and is weirdly strong , over all love this movie its super original and creative like both of the new it movies .
Money caused more issues than he was worth. His death scene shocked me for a second, but I wasn't upset over it. I really think he wanted the confrontation & to cause issues. He thought of himself as some sort of badass.
That scene with the turkey baster made me sick to my stomach. Cindy didn’t mean to kill his daughter and he violated her in a way that is even worse because of it’s just something you don’t expect, for a household item to be used to utterly ruin your life. Rocky, narrowly escaping that same fate, is right to want to hurt him because that’s a violation to the billionth degree. The old man has the audacity to say he’s not a rapist, but violate a woman like that. Makes my skin crawl
You do realise this is a movie right? It's extremely unlikely for 3 people to try to rob a blind veteran who keeps the woman who killed his daughter in his basement as he attempts to make her have a child with a turkey baster.
@@jjonahjameson8429 I'm pretty sure they know that it's a movie, they're just talking about how twisted the old man is and they were talking about the scene.

that turkey baster scene is by far the scariest part of the movie, especially as a female. it holds a different type of fear for me than the rest of the movie. the movie is so good, but that scene takes all of my normal horror movie fear and replaces it with a much more real one.
Yeah I know right! The corrupt justice system we have in America that lets women skid by with zero accountability for their actions is extremely terrifying.
Being a fellow James and horror love its cool to have a guy to watch, who not only summarizes movies for those who don't go to the movies, BUT also counts kills (putting so much work into doing that, he's talked about taking hours to count) I believe that this man deserves all success he gets.
One plot hole for me in this movie was at the end... didn't the police find his basement with a pregnant dead woman and chains to keep someone hostage? didn't they find his fridge with a lot of his "juice" and didn't ask any explanation? did he have time to clean and hide everything before police arrived?
He did dispose of the pregnant woman's body beforehand, and both of the victims were killed upstairs so the police wouldn't have reason to go in the basement
tbh forensics should have found out about everything also considering the blood of the pregnant women in the basement. Investigators would have to search the whole house too in case the story he told was untrue
It's weird that you'd mention Dylan being in Lost which was only for a minute basically while not mentioning his starring role in 13 reasons why which is what he's probably most known for ;)
He's mentioned Lost before on the channel I think and there might just be a chance he hasn't seen/heard of 13 Reasons Why. Still, I was a bit surprised he didn't mention it either
He’s mentioned in the past that Lost is one of his favourite shows. Plus, 13 Reasons Why is a pile of hot garbage. He was also in a couple of other horror films that were _also_ hot piles of garbage.
Welcome to the panic room Where all your darkest fears are gonna Come for you, come for you Welcome to the panic room You'll know I wasn't joking When you see them too, see them too

The blind old man is a monster. Yes, the teens are robbers, but they are not evil. And they never hurt anyone, and they don't torture people and brutally kill others. Fuck that old man.

It sucks that people shit on realistic horror. Anytime I try to get anyone to watch a more realistic horror movie like Hush, they always write it off as incapable of scaring them because it's not paranormal. I wish more people would actually try things, before writing them off.

As a native Royal Oaker, I cant describe the amount of love I have for this channel, and now that James is covering this I've got a ton of metro-detroit pride. Also, the only good thing Snyder did was give us good fireworks
It's gonna be interesting how they'll pull off the sequel. In this film, he's kept people captive, as well as killed the robbers, and the trailers for 2 portray him as being the good guy.
maybe there will be a twist, like maybe the people who came for the girl were hired by rocky (i assume since the next movie takes place 8 years later), it would be a great twist. if it doesn't happen then im just confused as everyone else.
You can be the Protagonist and not be the good guy. You can be the Antagonist and not be the bad guy. I personally think it could be a prequel story, explaining why he's so fucked now

Bro, Alex gets beat up so much and doesn’t die until he randomly gets shot. I was more shocked that he finally died, than anything else in this movie. 😂
I can't be the only one who felt bad for Alex after he died and later got the Dull Machete. Also, I'm with you about him surviving a bunch of sh*t he went through till the end.
I just realized a funny plot hole for this movie. When Rocky leaves the house, she’s covered in bruises and blood. However, hours later when she visits her sister, her wounds are all gone. Bruises don’t go away that quickly haha!
This film is actually so good. Was waiting for a kill count on it, it’s just made so well. It’s definitely one of my favourites, as it brings a good name to horror.
Everybody’s talking about the Raycons and the movie, but I’m out here fanning myself cause James is fucking built. He could survive in a horror movie with them abs
For anyone who's confused by this, "heel" and "face" are pro wrestling terms. A "heel" is a bad guy, and a "heel turn" is basically when a good guy becomes a bad guy. A "face" is a good guy, and a "face turn" is when a bad guy goes good. A "double turn" is what happens when both the heel and the face in an encounter turn to the other side during that encounter. In other words, it's both a heel and a face turn happening at the same time. Even in wrasslin', these are incredibly rare, since you essentially have to make a sympathetic character turn into an asshole while simultaneously making an asshole sympathetic, but when done right a double turn makes for unforgettably amazing story-telling.
@@asdf4evr Del Rio and Ziggler in 2013 is one great example of double turn in recent history. That storyline wasn't that memorable but Ziggler's face run was one of the best things about pg era and it was done so right. Just absolutely awesome around 2013-2014 and 2016 with Ambrose rivalry and intercontinental championship vs career storyline with The Miz.
@@Izaan2810 It was great! For context, Ziggler (the heel) had beaten Del Rio (the face) for the World Heavyweight Championship a while before, but was then legitimately concussed (as in, the person behind the character, not just the character, suffered a concussion in a later match). Ziggler had just come back from that actual concussion, and throughout the match, Del Rio just kept working the head. Del Rio kept kicking Dolph in head to the point that his conduct basically was the heel turn, and Ziggler's refusal to give up was Ziggler's face turn. Just wonderful storytelling.
@@asdf4evr Absolutely!! The storytelling was just absolutely brilliant in the match and Ziggler's selling of everything was just so on point like always!! I just wish that they invested way more in that storyline afterwards than they actually did. They literally ended the storyline SO abruptly just a month afterwards in Ziggler's disqualification loss to Del Rio due to AJ interfering, and her heel turn on Ziggler rather than giving Del Rio vs Ziggler rivalry a proper and memorable ending which should have been Ziggler's third world title win. That was so disappointing, how they shafted Ziggler out of the title picture so badly and abruptly.
I’m so glad you covered this movie - it was the horror movie that got me into horror and was so incredible in the sense that it keeps you on edge with a simple concept that lacks supernatural anything. Just real people in a possibly real situation. It honestly makes for great jump scares and a movie that makes you also understand how lucky some of us are that we would never have to to something like this like- Idek where I’m going with this I just fucking love this movie :3 tl;dr this movie was incredible and a realistic, nice transition into the horror genre :D
this movie felt more like a psychological drama as there is no hero and both sides have solid points with the end result not being so clear on who was right and who wins at the end. the movie has small flaws but its pretty brilliant in its layout, characters, and plot that it just feels in my opinion like "get out" except more in a robbery themed way. like james says, this movie kicks ass and it will make you cry at the depression towards the end so buckle up for it chums, its a movie i really recommend!
I do have to note in that article that you posted on the director's behavior, unsure who is telling the truth on the situation... Further down on the same page he admits on top of the psychological torment that his actors/actresses would scream at him and that he didn't care. At least to me that paints a very clear picture that this is likely a Stanley Kubrick/Alfred Hitchcock situation. Sure, they make good movies and get good scares, at the expense of everyone else's physical and mental health without caring about anyone else. I like good movies too, and yeah it is a good movie but knowing that(which I didn't know until this video and doing some more research hence commenting here), I don't think I can really like the guy all that much.
“Just cause he blind doesn’t mean he’s a saint” James:” bro u have no idea!” Me:” What is he a rapist” My wife whose already seen it “How did you know?” Me :” WHAT?”
im definitely glad he didnt make it easy to root for anyone, theyre all terrible people, robbing a blind (assumed defenseless) old man, and the old man being "not" a rapist. everyone sucks and it feels bittersweet that she escaped
Prediction: The sequel will feature us following the Old Man as he gets out of hospital, and the reason he didn't say anything about Rocky at the end of this film is so he can go get revenge on her himself since he doesn't believe police will bring Rocky to justice.
@@Zetsuke4probably because she could have turned the tables on him and blabbed about the pregnant woman he had chained in hi basement. Becasue there is no way he would have been able to get rid of all the evidence.
What I loved the most about DON'T BREATHE is how it took the premise from WAIT UNTIL DARK, and completely turned it on its head. Instead of "champion blind lady" Audrey Hepburn vs. a pack of criminals, the Blind Man here is the one you need to watch out for!
Honestly my biggest problem with the film is that I didn’t care for any of the characters. Like, in the first half I was actively rooting for the old man, and in the second half I was just indifferent as to who would live. Which to me is the worst thing you can do in a horror film, where we’re supposed to be invested in people surviving otherwise there is no actual horror.
“The long fluid shot ends in the old man’s bedroom, where he’s sleeping as sound as a Juggalo after a particularly rowdy ICP show” made me bust out laughing. Whoop whoop!
If anyone was wondering, Snyder was the governed of Michigan who capped the incentives for the film industry in Michigan to 25 million dollars. It is cheaper to produce a movie in Hungary compared to almost any other place in the world currently. Moving away from the facts, it’s my personal opinion that not capping the incentives wouldn’t have drawn many films to Michigan, nor would it have been cost effective if it had, as Hungary would still have been cheaper, and whatever movies do come back would likely produce less than 30 million dollars total.
Film incentives don't really work well, in that as soon as you reduce or remove them production will jump ship (unless you're NYC, LA, Atlanta or DC you don't really have much in the way of "stickiness" to keep film/post jobs without it), and the economic benefits are often pretty minimal (especially a film like this: likely most of the crew is being brought in from outside, there's no need for a ton of local extras or locations, and I don't think there's any tourism bonus for presenting Detroit as a bombed-out wasteland in yet another film.) They're arguably among the biggest wastes of public funds outside of sports stadiums. And yeah, as you point out, in a global market there's no way almost any US state can undercut whole countries with lower costs, especially with a low-budget film genre like horror. The fact that they actually shot in Detroit enough to give a proper sense of place is actually pretty impressive.
I remember them building a whole movie studio in Allen Park for it only to fall through. Oh shit I just realised James grew up in Lincoln Park, I grew up on the border of it.
This was like my first experience with any horror or thriller i the moves. I literally remember watching it like it was yesterday and all of the audience reactions. Especially the turkey baster scene
Okay, I get the guy wants a new daughter and I definitely do not agree with his methods in getting one, but what if he successfully impregnated Rocky and she gave birth to a boy?
Also you would think with all that money he could probably just pay for have a surrogate give birth to a baby for him. I mean not as much revenge but still…
As someone from Michigan myself I love hearing all these references to Michigan centric places, Jets pizza is one of the things I miss a whole lot after moving to Virginia, second being superman ice cream

I own Rottweilers, so I love seeing them in movies. I loved Prince in People Under the Stairs, and the dog in this one was also a nice touch. He was probably military or protection trained by the blind guy, which justifies why he'd be so persistent coming after intruders. (Although he probably wouldn't have stopped trying to bite.) There was a viral video not too long ago where a police dog came through a guy's car window, bit him, and dragged him out into the road. There really is an "Oh fuck" aspect to seeing that a dog is coming for you, the car is not going to stop the dog, and nothing is going to stop the dog from biting you.
There’s the other side of that coin though The more dogs are used to create fear in movies, the more people will start that “ban the breed” bullshit. How many movies do you see that show Rottweilers or pitbulls as loving pets?
@@UnlicensedOkie Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood shows a pitbull as a very loving (and vicious) animal. I don't think Rottweilers are banned because of Hollywood depictions. They're banned because thousands and thousands of people are irresponsible owners. You could make the argument that 101 Dalmations creating a Red Stapler effect, until people realized they were stuck with tireless coach dogs that won't stop chewing, contributed to creating a massive number of Dalmations abandoned in shelters. But Rottweilers went through 20 years of poor breeding and bad temperaments, and they are not easy dogs to own. If they're shown as angry, uncontrollable, dark, dangerous guard dogs, which most Rottweilers are (one of the Lethal Weapons is an exception?) I would hope that steers people away from wanting a Rottweiler.

To make the old man an even more evil villain, while also adding in more realism here:
I imagine the woman being locked in the basement was being force fed, as she probably wouldn't want to eat good given to him.
The other thing to think aboyt: How does she use the toilet like that?
@@destendgem probably doesn’t.
“Innocent”
She was not innocent. It has been stated that she used her money and connections to escape responsibility for the crime, which is one of the reasons Norman carried out his revenge in the first place.
It turned him into a vengeful nihilist who lost his belief in justice and morality.
@SheaSmoot Life for a life. She was lucky she had a uterus, otherwise the old man would have just killed her.

This movie pulled off the rarest of rare moves:
A heel-face double turn
heel-face kickflip
That was so disappointing, how they shafted Ziggler out of the title picture so badly and abruptly.

im definitely glad he didnt make it easy to root for anyone, theyre all terrible people, robbing a blind (assumed defenseless) old man, and the old man being "not" a rapist. everyone sucks and it feels bittersweet that she escaped

Prediction: The sequel will feature us following the Old Man as he gets out of hospital, and the reason he didn't say anything about Rocky at the end of this film is so he can go get revenge on her himself since he doesn't believe police will bring Rocky to justice.
Rocky isn't in the second movie. The trailer tells you what the set up is and it's a different story.

Same. I was fine with everyone dying. I didn't care anymore. Eight Deadly Words trope.

Oh shit I just realised James grew up in Lincoln Park, I grew up on the border of it.
the amount of movies filmed in Hungary is insane
This was like my first experience with any horror or thriller i the moves. I literally remember watching it like it was yesterday and all of the audience reactions. Especially the turkey baster scene
Okay, I get the guy wants a new daughter and I definitely do not agree with his methods in getting one, but what if he successfully impregnated Rocky and she gave birth to a boy?
Oh no! That would be so messed up. And kinda funny and cathartic all at the same time.
Could you imagine? It's a boy, he's just like welp let's try again lmao
The Writer: I'm gonna need you to get all the way off my back about that one.
The audience: Alright let me get off that thing then.

I own Rottweilers, so I love seeing them in movies. I loved Prince in People Under the Stairs, and the dog in this one was also a nice touch. He was probably military or protection trained by the blind guy, which justifies why he'd be so persistent coming after intruders. (Although he probably wouldn't have stopped trying to bite.)
There was a viral video not too long ago where a police dog came through a guy's car window, bit him, and dragged him out into the road. There really is an "Oh fuck" aspect to seeing that a dog is coming for you, the car is not going to stop the dog, and nothing is going to stop the dog from biting you.
There’s the other side of that coin though
The more dogs are used to create fear in movies, the more people will start that “ban the breed” bullshit.
At the end the old guy says to himself, “god damn raccoons”
