Fun Fact: Michael Jackson visited the set because he liked the Hannibal films. Michael was a horror movie fan. Which is why he had John Landis, the director of An American Werewolf in London, direct his Thriller video
He didn’t go for the Ratner Diddy after party events?
I saw an interview with John Landis and he said Micheal was still a kid and hardly knew horror films like Dracula or the Wolfman. Something about your fact didn't add up
@@basementdwellercosplayyou can be a fan of a genre without being a rabid fanatic of all things horror-related.
Landis probably quizzed him on some really obscure references and when he didn't get the answers he saw as acceptable he deemed Michael as No True Scotsman.
@@basementdwellercosplayIf you approach an average self-proclaimed horror movie fan and ask if they've seen Dracula or the Wolfman, the answer will be no.
I'm not totally surprised by this. Those movies have a totally different vibe to An American Werewolf in London, and to put it bluntly are a little boring for someone Michael's age at the time.
@@baydiacmy favorite Wolfman, Dracula and Frankenstein have Abbott and Costello in them.
13:01 "Sit still or he'll hear us"

What makes Red Dragon different from Manhunter is that it focuses more on Dollarhyde than Graham and is closer to the book. Perhaps it's a better adaptation than movie.
So it's similar to The Shining where Kubrick made the better movie overall but it wasn't a good adaptation while the 90s miniseries was the better adaptation but not as good overall.
Yeah it’s one of the few things this film did better I thought plus his relationship with Rita and I thought the final act was better.
FINALLY someone credits Red Dragon for the origin of the Hannigram homoeroticism. Red Dragon is why we have a lot of NBC Hannibal stuff and no one talks about it.
Can't we just agree Ralph Fiennes is an excellent actor when he gets to portray complex villans like Dollarhyde, Voldemort or even Chef Slowik. The guy is a national treasure of acting.
I’m sure British people agree.
Dollarhyde, Voldemort, Rameses, Amon Goth, Slowik, the list goes on. He's one of my favorite actors ever.
@@coolnerdlll6053 The Prince of Egypt is one of my favorite animations ever, thanks mostly by the cast which also had Val Kilmer, Michelle Pffeifer, Jeff Goldblum, Sandra Bullock, Danny Glover, Steve Martin and Martin Short besides Ralph
@@DodoRibeiro-ts6poYes Prince of Egypt aka Batman vs Voldemort
He’s also great as a romantic lead or straightforward leading man. Hell, it’s really funny to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel after this movie, since it’s also about Edward Norton chasing Ralph, but in the most Wes Anderson movie ever
RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It forever crushes me that we lost this genious of acting and human being so young just in his 46 years old. A true legend that we lost way too soon
I remember when he died my teacher for the drama class I took in college spent the whole class just to talking to us about mental health and addiction. It became an almost group therapy session.
@@stevencoffin328 He was many years of sobriety since he begin is addiction in his youth years, unfortunately i guess we can't escape from our inner demons
His death really hurt. I love him in Twister.
@@mandyb2245 Recently watched Twister because of the upcoming new movie, he is great in there, you should watch Capote, Before the Devil Knows You Are Dead and Doubt, probably his three best movies in his whole career
herion will do that
I've never seen a bad Ralph Fiennes performance, he always gives it all and commits 100% to everything I've seen him in
5:55
listened to “silence” on audiobook and in that Benjamin Raspail was a musician, dated Buffalo Bill, left Bill for a guy named Klaus, Bill kills Klaus and puts his head in a jar, and Hannibal kills Raspail and eats him. So this actually in line with the book lore.
Also Raspail knew Bill had already killed a few homeless people and Klaus, and instead of going to the police he treated it like an inconvenience and even told Hannibal all this in therapy, which is why Lecter knew who Bill was when Clarice started questioning him.
I think this movie gets a lot of unnecessary hate because of the comparison to Manhunter. As its own thing, I think it's still a really well made and entertaining movie. And Ralph Fiennes is always awesome.
Since I couldn't be first I'll be the first reply comment on the technically "second" comment
Well, the first will always be the thing to compare to, whether or not it's actually justified.
Yup
Well it didn’t just take inspiration from the same book. They clearly remade many similar shots. Low effort
@Irgevwvrheioakwh what are you talking about? It adapted parts of the book the original movie didn't
The fact that Will's shirt was soaked after meeting with Hannble for the first time after what happened; shows just how terrified Will was. But also how he managed to maintain control so Hannble wouldn't pick up on his fear.
Very curious how you managed to misspell his name so badly when it was literally the title of the movie before this 😂
Spelling has never been my strong point thanks to being dyslexic.
He probably smelled his body odor and knew he was terrified....or just smelled his fear..ya know...the guy might be a lil psychic 😂😂😂😂
Hannibal**
And that was Ed Norton's doing. Brett Ratner wanted him to jump back and show visible fear to Hannibal, and Ed basically said that was a stupid thing his character wouldn't do, so they went with the sweat
Edward Norton being in any movie automatically makes it better
Ed Norton isn't too bad as Will Graham, but Hugh Dancy's portrayal in the Hannibal series, is a lot more accurate then Ed's. A pity its too hard to a kill count on the series.
thats exactly what i was thinking. there's a lot more going on in the show than the killing (despite it being about killers) that it would be a waste to only focus on those 🥲
I hope they do a podcast episode on the NBC series someday
@@internetperson3926 yeah.
I still think he could do a KC on the series, just not right now
I personally prefer Fiennes as the Tooth Fairy but maybe it's because he's the version of Francis Dolarhyde that I feel more sorry for as opposed to Tom Noonan who I'm more scared of.
I agree with that, though I think Richard Armitage gave us the best of both on the TV show. All three are great though.
I actually prefer Noonan. His Dolarhyde felt more human and vulnerable when around Reba and without the overt Great Red Dragon references, his monstrous side felt less theatrical and more grounded in someone desperate to feel power.
Noonan was also excellent in his episode of the x files
The way he clutches Wills son in an attempt to protect him when will is insulting him is kinda heartbreaking
Ralph Fiennes was better as Dolarhyde and Anthony Hopkins was better as Hannibal but William Petersen was better as Will Graham
Dang James, did you time this Kill Count release perfectly with the P. Diddy raids just for the mention at 13:10? Incredible. and it confirms how much of a creep the director is.
When he brought up his association with Diddy, I thought "That aged well."
Ratner ran with Russel Simmons who has his own charges against him, hence the Run Simmons cameo. We know the rumors about Michael and now the truth about Diddler. Bird who r*** together make dirty money together…
The fact that the director hung out with both Michael Jackson AND P. Diddy before they were all outed as creeps is both crazy and unsurprising to me
I was thinking the same thing! It's crazy to see how well connected they all are with each other, also disappointed to hear he pulled a woody Allen and ran to another country to avoid charges.
Rattner and his friends sure aged like milk. Oh boy
"Who?!? 😰"
"Micheal Jackson, he's upstairs. 😒"
I cannot get over this lmao 😭😭😭
2:35 it’s insane to me that both directors of the original X-men trilogy are sexual monsters who fled from the law
Scott Glenn refused to reprise his Silence of The Lambs role of FBI agent Jack Crawford in the subsequent movies because the research he conducted for the original film disturbed him so much. It still apparently causes him anxiety to this day.
Yeah, it's a messed up story. Kind of a dick move by John Douglas.
Damn… poor guy, I hope he was able to get help
John Douglas had him listen to a real audio recording of a woman being murdered. No wonder the poor dude is still messed up.
Apparently Ted Levine also almost ended up traumatizing himself but he and the FBI agent got caught and so he never got as deep as poor Scott Glenn did.
@@sleepyandroid6904 That's messed up wow
Brett Ratner telling diddy about a party. Is probably the most scary thing about this video. 😱
That’s what I was thinking 😂
Ok, so are going to acknowlege that the guy who fled to avoid facing consequences for sexual predation was apparently bffs with at least two known secual predators?
@@elenachristian98601 known sexual predator. The children of the families who accused Michael Jackson came forward and said their parents made them lie.
@@elenachristian9860 ...pretty much everyone is acknowledging that already lol? Also not sure if we can say MJ was a 'known s***** predator'

13:09 A DIDDY PARTY, NOT A PARTY I WANNA BE AT" 😂😂😂 I LOVE YOU JAMES ❤❤
18:13
The reference to Randy Orton’s entrance song is gold
Always love when James slips in these nuggets of wrestling references.
I'm glad I wasn't the only person who caught that reference. 😂
13:04 That is an absolutely amazing line, I'll cherish it forever.
Red Dragon is like a true crime podcast, focusing on the grisliness and violence of the crimes and who the killer was and less on the actual victims affected by it. As evidenced by the crime scene photos we didn’t get many glimpses of in the first film and a focus on the abuse Dolarhyde went through under his Grandmother. Manhunter is more like the police procedurals of the time and focuses on how the crime affects the detectives and victims and generally more sympathetic to them than the killer. While they follow the same plot lines, it’s interesting to see how different they are despite that.
Thats a good point.
Excellent take

Fun fact! My mother bought the house they used to film in the Florida Keys a few years back, and found out about the movie soon after. To this day, we still call it the red dragon house!
what the hell
I loved the way Hannibal works with certain people. Clarice had to give personal info and be controlled by Hannibal just for him to mess with and help her. Will completely ignores him and doesn’t bend because of their history together. Hannibal can’t toy with Will that makes the dynamic so interesting
1:51 A “Death to Smoochy” call out was not what I expected when I clicked on this video, but here I am, gloriously pleased at the reference. Seriously underrated film.
“I’m Rainbow Fucking RANDOLPH!”
@@adhirgDamn I miss Robin Williams. ❤
@@danielbretall2236 me too, I think “Death to Smoochy” is my favorite Robin Williams movie tbh. Danny DeVito had to be on something when directing the movie lol, it’s so insane!
Love Death to Smoochy.
A severely underrated gem.
@@adhirgThe scene where Randolph tries to frame Smoochy/Sheldon with the dick shaped cookie to get his job back then runs out screaming at him in front of the kids when it backfires kills me to this day.
The conducter of the orchestra in the opening scene was Lalo Schifrin, the composer of the Mission: Impossible Theme.
He also created and composed the Rush Hour scores, which was directed by Ratner.
And Dirty Harry/ Bullit, the guy was a legend in film composing
As someone who never read the Red Dragon book or seen Manhunter this movie was a really fun and entertaining watch
7:22
Love the funny reference to Jelinsky in survivor 46! Nice to know that there are still plenty of fans out there, thanks again James!❤
7:23 Love the survivor reference! Jelinsky may gone but never forgotten
I've been trying to forget him for weeks and it just won't take
I sometimes forget that their fans of Survivor so that reference took me by surprise lol
My brain knows that Red Dragon isn't as good as the others, but I saw this movie BEFORE Silence of the Lambs, so it holds a special place. It was my introduction to Hannibal.
This one is several paces behind Silence for me; I LOATHE Hannibal( the movie, not the show). I thought the story was weak, but recasting Clarice was sacrilege -- particularly with Julianne Moore, who's...y'know, fine...but is absolutely no Jodie Foster.
Same. I knew OF "Silence of The Lambs", but didn't know anything about it nor had I seen it before. Wasn't until I saw my parents watching this movie one night and I decided to join them that I was introduced to Hannibal Lector :)
It better then Hannibal and Hannibal rising
Red Dragon is WAY better than both the 2001 Hannibal movie and Hannibal Rising. James just likes the Hannibal movie cause he's into super cheesy horror movies. If you are a fan of the serious styles of the prior films (and Red Dragon) then you'll most likely consider Hannibal to be awful.
^What’s wrong with liking cheesy horror
The Ratner/P Diddy connection did not surprise me at all but the timing of this video’s release is *chef’s kiss*
Your obscure Survivor references as if they are a seamless part of horror pop culture are always so amusing!
15:56 You can see his hands flailing. Poor bastard was still alive for at least part of his downhil ride.
Not gonna lie. That puppet transition genuinely cracked me up. Shout out to the crew thag contributes to the script writing for this bits!
You mean the dummy transition
Saying Willie like that is always hilarious. Thanks James made my day.

Bret Ratner being friends with diddy makes all the sense in the world now
The Freakazoid drawing brought back my childhood 😭
I was hoping someone else noticed that!
I think James may some what underestimate his audience when he goes for a deep cut like that.
Hahahaha I loved how they used a Voldemort memoji for The Red Dragon’s kill. 😂
Ironically, Ratner being friendly with Sean Combs/P. Diddy is the LEAST surprising side-fact to this movie, given everything that's come out recently
Nah James, that "Freak(azoid) on a Man's Back" joke is amazing, I loved it.
Brett Ratner, Michael Jackson, and Diddy all partied together? What could those three upstanding men all have in common? I wonder.
Can't forget Rev Run's brother is Russell Simmons, add him to the list too.
They are really good friends and just like to party, what's your point?
@@KadenHartley James mentioned that Brett Ratner fled the country after sexual misconduct claims, Diddy House just got raided and we all know the rumours about Michael Jackson...you knew exactly what his point was.
Well not pedophilia since MJ had all his allegations repeatedly disproven both in court of law and by numerous investigations even on claims made 10 years after his death.
Don't add Michael Jackson
“How I’d love to get you on my couch” if only they had used that line in the TV series, the fans would’ve gone insane
Never disagreed with James more than I have on Red Dragon. I absolutely love this movie
This movie is really really great! Ralph Fiennes is fantastic and steals the show! RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman
The Puppet James saga is what i live for
Edward Norton should be in more movies.
I miss him

I love that the wife isn’t useless in this movie and actually gets a kill
This is an underrated entry in this series. Ralph Fiennes is great and Edward Norton is such a good Will Graham.
Feels like a great adaption of the novel.

Lmfao not enough likes ..for this gold
Love that South Park episode!
“I see you like cutting the eyes out of photos of women. My son is a big fan of that too!”
Aaaaagh so boring!
Don't forget Joe Dirt
Getting your lips bitten off and then burned alive has to be one of the worst ways to go imo. Even worse he was still flaying around when he was flying down the road
I hope you cover the Hannibal series after Rising because it is absolute phenomenal and underrated and has some if the most gnarly and brutal kills
I think one of the more interesting aspects of Hannibal Rising is it eliminates half of Billy Loomis's argument against motives.
And next we have *Hannibal Rising* , which is certainly a movie
I completely forgot that existed. Never saw it.
It is a very weird and bad film
One of the movies of all time
That P.Diddy/Ratner tidbit had me honking out the most uncomfortable laughter after what’s been happening with Diddy over the past week, oh my god 🫠🫠

Ever since I watched the tv series, Hannibal, I found myself comparing this movie to that show lol but I love having a Lecter Marathon! Including Hannibal Rising 😂

i just finished watching Hannibal the serie and i reaaaally loved the wink that they give to Hannibal (2001) and manhunter/red dragon (season 2 and 3 respectively). Season 1 is amazing as well, but all three seasons excells in the showcase (?) of the deaths!!!
I hope at some point we get an adaptation where Dolarhyde more physically resembles his book counterpart, who was supposed to be an absolute unit in bodybuilder shape. Just the idea of someone who's both physically strong and massive and out of his mind bonkers is something I think would play really well on the screen.
I caught the really good shape Fiennes was in for the role. As a bodybuilder myself I really approve.
The work was actually done this time, rather than an actor just cutting weight and using camera angles.
Someone call Tom Hardy’s agent.
@@DAsrada Fiennes was in good shape, no doubt. The Dolarhyde of the book though is described as MASSIVE and so muscular that the dragon tattoo on his back seemes animated by the muscles when he moves. That imagery I think would be really interesting if put to film.
@tuckershuff1441 I regularly get pretty big, and I'm trying to make it as an actor. Plus, I can inject a bit of personal connection: everyone said I looked really good, but due to suffering from rosacea all I saw was the ugly red spots. Like how all Dolarhyde saw was his palate scar, when people honestly did find him attractive.
@@tuckershuff1441Fiennes' tattoo definitely writhes under his muscle when he's posing for Lounds.

Raspail was actually Buffalo Bill's partner (they met at a shop where he worked) and a flutist. Lecter really killed him due to his subpar playing abilities, but before that, he was his therapist. Raspail actually ended up having to go to therapy because he cheated on Buffalo Bill once with a sailor, and Bill lashed out on his lover, killing him - it was that sailor's head that was kept in the jar in the storage room. Raspail is how Lecter came to know about Buffalo Bill and met him.
in the silence movie I believe it is Raspail's head in the jar, in the book it was Raspail's lover Klaus who was Bill's first victim and whose head was in the jar

I love Red Dragon. It really feels like Silence of the Lambs and they pair so well together. As they were the 2 original novels I think they flow well, rather than Hannibal and Hannibal Rising which were cash grabs.
It's funny, really, as there is literally nothing on TV that I watch, but when I see James and the team have done an upload, I get all excited
7:23 what a reference 😂
The best Will Graham was Hugh Dancy
I’d argue the best Hannibal is Mikkelsen too. I think both are helped by just having far more time to be their characters, but also from the fact that it doesn’t undergo the shift into hamming it up that happens in the movie.
