Ex-FBI agent Will Graham (Edward Norton) is an expert investigator who quit the Bureau after almost losing his life in the process of capturing the elusive Dr. Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). After a series of particularly grisly murders, Graham soon realizes that the best way to catch this killer, known as the Tooth Fairy, is to find a way to get inside the killer's mind. For Graham, that means confronting his past and facing his former nemesis, the now-incarcerated Lecter.

Brett Ratner wanted too just give very vague implications of Hannibal holding a grudge.
I love how both Graham and Starling have their own unique yet effective ways of dealing with Lecters mind games. Starling seemingly more willing to engage in mental sparring initially with the doctor meanwhile Graham is more no nonsense and straight up stonewalls him.
I feel like Will has the advantage of knowing Hannibal for a long time, so he knows how to assert his position more effectively than Clarice. She also had to work harder to earn his respect I think.
Starling had more of an advantage I think in Silence and Red Dragon. He fell in love with her. Of course she got lucky at the beginning of Silence that Lecter's next door cell mate was rude to her. Will had to work harder not to give anything away.
Will was a seasoned veteran, Clarice was a recruit.

@Bubba Sawyer He was intentionally not showing emotion because he wasn't giving Lecter anything to mess with. That's not "phoned in acting," and it's no worse than Spacey in Seven. Sometimes, wooden and "lifeless" is what's specifically needed.
The man's acting is superb, he doesnt even need to speak and can still make lecter terrifying.
I like Silence of the Lambs & Hannibal, this one not so much. I do wish they would make a final instalment of this series. Hannibal
Lecture is fascinating.
He doesn't even blink either. Much of this performance is physicality, the slow and still shoulders back chest front body language, and the firm stillness of the face.
Doesnt have the same feel as Lambs, the dialogue acting was much sharper.

I also love how it comes as Lecter is trying to take back control of the conversation after Will turns down Lecter saying "he'll consider it." The line after it, Will just threatens to leave, dismissing Lecter's mind games.

Most people think that Hannibal's reaction to Will calling him insane is rage, I feel like it's disappointment. You could see Lecter's interest getting piqued when Will said he had disadvantages, but when Will did call him insane, he was disappointed. Disappointed that the only man close enough to understanding him at this point, the only man he considered worth battling wits with, was satisfied with calling him mad and moving on.

Yeah I never thought it was rage. Either disappointment or perhaps realisation that his insanity is actually what got him caught and his "acting normal" in society wasn't as perfect as he thought because he is, in fact, insane.

@@leom5671 In the film "Hannibal" we're told that it's "to show his disdain for those who exacerbate him", as well as to "perform a public service" by removing people he thinks society is better without- like a flutist he felt was spoiling an orchestra (in the books the flutist is one of his patients and he gives the additional reason of getting tired of his "whining" in therapy).
The film and book "Hannibal Rising" shows that when he was a kid, some starving soldiers broke into his family estate and murdered and ate his family, including his sister who was fed to Hannibal, and Hannibal escaped, grew up, hunted down and brutally murdered all of them in revenge, and afterwards started killing people he found annoying.
So he tortures and kills people he doesn't like, and he eats them to show he is better than they are, that they are nothing more than a meal to him.
I like how Will isn't as susceptible to Lecter's psychological fuckery as Clarice was. It's an interesting contrast that helps to elevate Will's character.
A big reason for it is that he's nearly Lecter's equal when it comes to insight into the psyche, to the point of becoming unstable in the realization he might be as deranged as the people he's after. They mostly glossed over Will's PTSD and being on the brink of a breakdown in this version though, he didn't have Norton's boyish self-assured vanity about him. Lecter had left lasting psychological damage and Will was repulsed by his presence enough he could hardly stand being in the room with him. "Manhunter" captured it well, he enters the cell area gingerly like going into a lion's den, and afterwards runs away in a panic unable to face him again. Of course, with the popularity of Hopkins' Lecter they had to create much more screen time for them since he hardly appeared in the book, but Norton never sold Will as a rattled, weary veteran investigator. That bottled-up torment and darkness in Petersen's portrayal added much more interesting complexity.

This movie did an excelent job portraying Will Graham as the man who was capable of putting the animal in the cage.
Kudos to Edward Norton too, who came up with ideas to emphasize this.
@@Jose-se9pu Exactly. He did a good job of sparring with Lecter in a very humble and unassuming way. He knew what cards not to show and what bait not to take. Almost like a psychological matador.
He sees completely through his game and he wore it on his facial expressions and body language well.
@@Jose-se9pu That was the part they did well. I don't mean to rehash my earlier thoughts, but the movie missed the boat on Graham's character in a number of ways though. Norton can be phenomenal in some roles, but I think he was miscast for this. He just wasn't believable as a battle-worn reluctant genius, and Graham was not a young hotshot anymore. While the scenery chewing with Lecter they added was probably unavoidable, the smugness and self-assured demeanor of Graham was at odds with the doubt and deep psychological scars he is supposed to be carrying. William Petersen was better suited and really had you believing he was functional yet ready to crack at any moment. It wasn't appreciated in its day, but it had a huge influence on later psychological thrillers and police procedurals like "CSI" which Petersen ended up leading himself. I want to like "Red Dragon" better, I really do, especially having Hopkins, but every time I watch it I end up wanting to go back to "Manhunter" after.
Lecter feels very vulnerable in this particular scene. He's extremely aggressive, but I think it's because he's mad that Will caught him. He feels superior in terms of intellect, but he also understands that Will has his own intelligence that matched, even overthrew him. Will deflects all of his manipulation.
The director and Hopkins observed that during the filming process. Unlike the more reserved and quietly menacing persona of Dr. Lector in Silence of the Lambs, this Lector was considerably more aggressive, angry, and still feeling the sting of what he called the "inconvenience of being incarcerated." This was meant to seem as though Lector was still dealing with what he considered the "injustice" of being captured. I always love discussion of this film, and the stylized glimpse into the mind of a monster.
Agreed. Just watched the scene with Agent Clarice. He seems more settled in by that time. Here, he is…aggravated and everything around him is beneath him.
....until he told the ultimate truth that stung Lecter.......he...is insane...and therefore at a loss...for all his money....style.... education and savior faire....he is living at a deficit....that put him at the mercy of....rude people....ugh....
Will is the antithesis to Lecter in that Will is so empathic in that he can completely understands the thoughts/feelings of others. Lecter is a pure psychopath, meaning he completely lacks the ability to feel guilt hence the thoughts/feelings of others is irrelevant
Big time. One of the most worthwhile things about this film is that it wasn't just a victory lap for Hopkins, it was an opportunity to portray Lecter at his most villainous, in a different time and dynamic in his life, before meeting the person who'd kick off his slow evolution into something more.
Lecter is obsessed with control. He keeps trying to get the upper hand in this interaction - "Let me keep the photos and I *might* consider it," alluding to threatening Will's family, "You won't persuade me with appeals to my intellectual vanity," trying to get into Will's head with asking about his dreams, "You want to know how he's choosing them, don't you?" (stroking his own ego by pointing out that Will needs something from him), reminding Will what he did to him the last time they worked together...and through it all Will refuses to budge or let Lecter feel in control of the conversation. Good stuff.
The only way to win with a psychopath is to not play at all. Will knows this and handled himself well with Lector ultimately caving like a child when his bluff is called.
That's sorta what I love about _Red Dragon_ and _The Silence of the Lambs._ I love how, even though Lecter is locked up, he's the one with all the power. Will and Clarice need his help, and he knows it.
@@ZukoHalliwell In this scene Will proved emphatically he didn’t need lector. He was willing to walk, and the one willing to walk has the power, not the one who caves and essentially yells “no wait come back!” Lector got played here.

@@ZukoHalliwell Will is an experienced profiler he wouldn't bluff not with someone as intelligent and psychopathic as Lector he'd know straight away and would have toyed with Will and that would give Lector the upper hand for sure. If you notice Lector sat up, paid attention and seemed pissed off when Will said laymen. That was a subtle insult to Lector and he took it as such that's why he was fixated on how Will caught him because if Will is a layman then thats basically saying to Lector you're nothing special an idiot like me figured you out that insults the narcissistic side of his personality because its made clear many times that the FBI can't build an accurate profile of him and he knows it that feeds into his ego and narcissist tendencies and Lector has shown narcissistic traits insulting a narcissist can make them lose control so I would guess Will did that to see what Lector would reveal in his anger but he never took the bait.
The walking away from Lector wasn't a bluff he had every intention of leaving but Will also probably knew Lector would do something else to grab and keep his attention. At this point Lector probably gets visits from psychologists and FBI profilers wanting to interview him and find out about him so he's not short of an audience to toy with because they probably come back to hear more whereas Will the man that caught him and has ignored him since has come to see him because Will now wants/needs something from him. There was no way Lector was going to refuse to cooperate with Will not when he's finally got a response after years of trying because he knows Will won't come back and will continue to ignore him so that's why he agreed and thats why he asked for one hour because he now has some control, his narcissistic side has been fed and he's got Will's full attention in Lector's mind the game has started.

The look on Lecters face when Will points out, that Hannibals deficiency is his insanity. Even in Hannibals brilliance, you could tell he had never really considered it. Hopkins is such a great actor...

Lecter is driven by arrogance. He murders and eats people because he thinks he is somehow above being human. Will telling Lecter he is insane is the deepest cut Lecter could take. Lecter coming to terms with his humanity.

That’s a fault in the script character. A psychopath of that calibre would have taken it as a compliment and used that to play the detective.
"Insane" made all the blood in his brain boil. At least that what it looked like to me, the expression on his face the second his eardrum registered the word.

Lector's reaction isn't rage.
He is a learned man, and is quite capable of diagnosing himself. He often has.
Will calling him 'insane' is a statement of fact, Lector can't deny it.
Will told Lector that his mental condition lead to his capture, but Lector thinks of his madness as his strength.
He was shocked by the revelation.
He's a student of Jung so by definition he can't diagnose himself, so couldn't, probably as curious as the rest of us to be honest but in the book it alludes to lector being one of a kind, a pyschopathic narcissist who has a little self control, like he can turn it off, amazing character

Will Graham's 'your insane' comment would've floored Hannibal Lector.
'Your insane ' makes him out to be nothing more than a common, vulgar and pedestrian serial killer of the everyday variety.
Lecter is a snob ! His Ego would've taken a beating.
Being lumped together with the 'great unwashed' would've have internally infuriated Lecter, hence his horrific revenge on Will Graham.
For those who haven't read the books by Thomas Harris, especially Silence of the Lambs, we are told that Graham had a face that's now hard to look at AND the insinuation that he's broken . . . and a . . . drunk.
A further inference that his wife Molly left him as Lecter got 'too close '
Molly had warned Will Graham at the beginning of Red Dragon that she couldn't go through him (Graham) bring physically or psychologically scarred again by Hannibal Lecter.

The thing I love most about this scene is how its the exact opposite of the Agent Starling scene. In "silence of the Lambs" the camera constantly shifts when Hannibal is getting more dominant. However, in this scene, the camera is almost always at an equal level, even when will is sitting down. There is never a shot with both in frame where one is standing above the other.
For being a Brett Ratner movie, Red Dragon was surprisingly well made. I like the fact that the movie didn't shy away from its connections to Silence of the Lambs but instead embraced them, even at the cost of people inevitably drawing comparisons. I think bringing back Ted Tally to pen the screenplay was a key factor.
@@vincenzomarino9206Apparently, Tally’s screenplay was what convinced Hopkins to come back after _Hannibal_ and Norton (who’s VERY picky about the scripts he chooses) to sign on.

I love how this is said as an observation and not a question. Lector came to the realisation that the person who put him in the cell didn't have any malice against him, rather he was being treated like a human being. Maybe even with the smallest amount of respect.
No. It is because he wanted to mess around with Will, and when Will abruptly turned to leave Lecter was shocked that Will gave up the game so easily.
Books could have been used as leverage. Any person, including psychopaths like Hannibal, have their weak spot(s) that can be used.

I have another theory maybe...i think lecter doesnt think the killing and eating is "insanity" u see all the hunting gear and the history of man etc...man in its originality kills to survive or kills for humanity's survival or in another way survival of the fittest.
What did humanity do before they could talk? They couldnt argue or discuss they just killed or were killed.
I forget what its from but people say things like "after man" orcas are superior predators and we are just that the most successful predators of all animals ever...and while i think what im saying is horrible and makes me disgusted to say this last thing , it makes sense we still have predatory humans or "killers" 😔

hopkins merely played lecter as he saw him, he made lecter. any actor subsequently playing lecter will therefore fail, he will not be hopkins.

I struggle to watch the remakes, none beat Michael Mann's Manhunter
so flawless he was that Jodie Foster admitted on the Graham Norton show that she was too scared to talk to him and rather avoided him until the end of the production :D
There is a movie called "Manhunter" from the '80s (this is actually a remake of that), the guy who played Grissom in CSI plays Graham there.
Anyway, the actor who plays Lecter is pretty good, but of course, Hopkins is in another level.

I like how Hopkins changed Lector's before arrest and after arrest. He's not as Hepburn sounding before being caught. Like Hopkins made him angry because he was caught.

Lecter doesn't respond to him being called insane and instantly jumps to threatening Will and his family. He really felt insulted, but he knows its true to some extent.

I love their dynamic. I always felt Hannibal considered himself the ultimate predator and Will the genius hunter. But no will just shuts it down like it was a fluke.
It's creepy how one of the paintings in Lecter's cell is of a jacked man. It's almost as if he already knew the profile for the person they were looking for.
He even looks directly at that drawing when he mentions Birmingham and Atlanta

I really apreciate Edward Norton insisting on Will Graham not being afraid of Dr Lecter, makes the character feel different than the rest (especially Clarice), you can tell this is the man that managed to put the animal in the cage.
I think it was Norton contribution to the screenwriting, because in the book Graham often described traumatic and hesitated to meet Lecter

I see those two interactions entirely different both in nature and how Hannibal reacts to the responses. With Clarice he purposefully lead the conversation to the point where she'd have to mention this unsettling detail and Lecter seems impressed that Clarice isn't affected by it.
When it comes to the insanity comment, Lecter seems upset of being reminded of his condition that he can't ever understand making it his only weakness and the only thing he can't respond to with some witty remark which infuriates the man who is usually verbally unmatched but even his intellect has its' limits.
The fact that he hates rude people comes into play...meaning how could they point that out at a time like this reaction...

Manhunter will always be my favorite version but Red Dragon had its moments.

I know Hopkins gets all the accolades but man, Edward Norton was great in this scene too while Lecter was trying to get inside his head Norton played it really casual like, "I'm not here to play games or beg for your help you'll either do this or you won't." Absolutely no fear on his face.
But that's the thing though, Graham is supposed to be scared of Lecter. He's not supposed to look disinterested, he supposed to be trying to hide his fear of Lecter and fear of himself of what he had to become to catch Lecter. This is a poor interpretation and representation of the character, William Petersen did it much better.

@@AnnoyingNerdLoL ....in the movie you clearly see he was very ambivalent doing the job,...he was living a great simple life with his wife and child....he only did the job to save other families....once he clocked Lecter as insane and the veiled threats started coming he decided to just cut bait and walk......then Lecter decided...to play the game...hoping for another chance to not only escape....but to kill Will...and his family...

Lecters eyes well up when hes called out as insane....I personally think he's not furious, when he calls him insane, but heartbroken, because he has the intelligence to appreciate the statement as fact. Amazing acting....he performs critical, perceptive analysis on other people, to amazing effect, so to have his own shadow confirmed, broke his heart!

No. He is physiologically incapable of experiencing such emotions. At most, he's disappointed.

I love when everything comes together in a movie, character depth, storyline , acting... Lecter by Hopkins will forever be one of my favorite characters

“You had disadvantages” “you’re insane” - then a pause from lector - it’s almost like the confrontation in the first film when Clarice says basically “I wonder if you can turn that high powered view on yourself and tell me what you see of yourself” - he avoids her question and deflects same as he does here, he really doesn’t like to turn his mind on his reality and possible flaws, deflecting works and he knows that- curios thing though, with such a high intellect would lecter really have eaten multiple humans KNOWING the damage cannibalistic behaviours have on a human brain - I will refer later to case studies - also what was the drive for him as an intellectually dominant person to eat an inferior person - his taste and style don’t seem to align with that outcome - but one thing is god damn sure - he LOVES the mental battle and two and fro - he’s loving the suppose challenge and sparring with them - genius character and portrayal by Hopkins who I’ve met and comes from 10 miles away from my home town - brilliant musician too and worth listening to his compositions on here, also the silence of the lambs audiobook with the death head moth thumbnail is sheer genius and worth listening too 👌🏻🍻
He doesn’t have to turn that perception on himself. Nor would it hurt him if he did, he knows what he is; what he likes. What he does not like is for someone to view him as inferior, if he he feels he is a test subject he is drawn to anger. Because of his familiarity on the other side superiority.

Sir Anthony Hopkins is a legend. What an extraordinary performance. And Edward Norton is such an underrated actor. He's so talented.
Being told he’s insane to my knowledge is one of the few times Hannibal almost appears to be somewhat upset, or even offended. It’s subtle and quick however it’s still clearly there. Even when being shot and stabbed he barely flinches but being called insane seemed to cut him quite deep. Hannibal prides himself on being intellectual and a step above and ahead of everyone else so to be called mad clearly upsets him. Anthony Hopkins truly was the perfect Hannibal Lecter.
I love how Will's completely in control and Hannibal think's he's got him but he hasn't.
Edward Norton is good, but I honestly think William Petersen in Manhunter is far more interesting. Every moment he's on the screen, you can tell he is walking a fine line.
The pause in Hannibal’s lines, coupled with his sitting up in bed and turning toward Will with his head centered between his shoulders is just terrifying. The long pauses that provides complete silence is unnerving. It’s not “normal” and is quite creepy. Hopkins most likely did this by pure instinct and thereby, displaying his pure brilliance as an actor. Hopkins said that he wanted to appear “somewhat normal” and let the audience’s imagination do all the work.
What a beautifully frightening character he created for us to all to see. Just amazing.

I like this scene, but I actually think it's crisper and more intimidating in Manhunter.
Manhunter had a better director.
This version is very Hollywood, overly dramatic music etc it's much more restrained and tense in Manhunter.

Not only this, Ed Norton is a terrible Will Graham, he feels like a disinterested and tired working man rather than the tortured and damaged victim.
He's a good actor, but this interpretation of the character is easily the worst.
This movie is like they remade Manhunter for the kids at the back of the class.
The most baffling thing about the comment section of this video is how many people misspell "Hannibal Lecter".

I saw this movie before any other hannibal films. When I found out they had made a tv show with these two, I was so happy.

It's crazy how Hannibal Lecter's voice changed since the start of the movie. In the beginning he sounds calm, polite, and very professional, here he sounds sinister like he's happy that he doesn't have to hide his true nature anymore.

“Find our if you’re smarter than the person I’m looking for” ....... you can see the challenge fires in lector ignite under the surface at the prod from will, his slow deliberate walk towards him is so threatening and yet subtle- it’s like a snake cooling ready for the strike, by implication you think you’re smarter than me? love the menace in that sentence and it’s great how the two - Clarice and will manage him differently- Clarice is engaging and open - will is cold calculating and had learnt from the best and knows how to trigger lector - notice how lector almost has to concede to get further interaction with will but in the Clarice/lector scenes it’s lector making Clarice concede and confide to get progress - fascinating the two interactions are 👌🏻🍻
Will is Hannibal's antithesis. He has so much empathy and strategic thinking he can become the suspects he is looking for. And yet in this process it becomes clear that Will also has the tendencies to go dark. He has the needed thinking for a serial killer, but uses it for the right path. But because of this, he always walks a fine line of not succumbing to the same innate thinking.
That's why his interactions with Will are different. Hannibal knows Will can be just as cruel and strategic as he is, but chooses not to.
It is a battle of wits in which Will tries tu use this to get information out of Hannibal and Hannibal tries to bring out the intrusive thoughts.
That is also why Will shows less of this in this interaction, in order to not get too much exposure to Hannibals persuasion.

One of the greatest
Will was toying with Lecter. He so obviously calls himself a Laymen. Lecter wouldn't be able to let that slide, having just heard that the man who managed to catch him is degrading himself and thus making it sound like his capture was nothing special. Lecter's ego couldn't let it go. As Will acted like it meant nothing, his inevitable answer was to set Lecter off balance. Calling Lecter Insane when he asked about his disadvantages.
Will was self degrading up until this point, being humble. However his answer is a complete 180. There is a huge difference between the sane and insane, that abrupt change in position was beautiful and you can see it on Anthony's face.

I really don't get that part. Why does it implicate that? Doesn't it simply implicate that will thinks that the red dragon is smarter he is? And maby even smarter than Lecter depending on if he can catch him

I agree with that statement about Silence, but how is Red Dragon remotely close? It's barely even a good movie.
@@micahadamson4309 You will find fans of it. It may not have been as well received as Silence of the Lambs (few films are) but that does not make it barely a good movie. It is still a good movie with intersting characters and a solid story.

@@micahadamson4309 Yes and no. The book Red Dragon was written before Silence of the Lambs so the story elements of Silence of the Lambs are actually derivative of Red Dragon. As for the acting, well Hannibal Lector is the main attraction so he got a few more scenes.
@@trueblue6201 I was more thinking of the entire atmosphere, direction and style of the film as being derivative of Silence, it's just so many aspects of the movie are based off the original movie. I'm not saying it's a bad movie, in just saying that calling it one of the greatest films of all time is ridiculous.

Lecter is obsessed with the reason Will was able to catch him but acts as if it's Will who's obsessed about it. I guess it's because Lecter is egotistical?
It's also the reason why he hates being tested so much. Lecter can't stand being tarred with the same brush as every other dime a dozen psychopath. He has to be head and shoulders above the rest.
Does Lecter not accept the idea that his capture was a lucky accident? Is he giving Will credit?
@@umbraemilitos Hannibal cannot except being caught out of pure luck. Not by someone of Will Graham's intelligence and profiling abilities built on pure empathy. Hannibal's also competitive with other Doctors in the field.

I actually don't mind, I'm not at all distracted by Hopins' age in this. I was more bothered by how fake De Niro looked in the Irishman.
The main difference is that he's heavier, actors like him are no strangers to gaining or losing weight for roles, for whatever reason he did not go through that trouble for this. If not for that, they probably could have made him look quite close to before. The lighting is also odd, it's very blue-filtered looking and doesn't do him any favors.
I love how Norton swallows as Hopkins approaches him. Will was very glad to have a wall of bulletproof glass in between them.
