FILM DESCRIPTION:
Ex-FBI agent Will Graham (Edward Norton) is an expert investigator who quit the Bureau after almost losing his life in the process of capturing the elusive Dr. Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). After a series of particularly grisly murders, Graham soon realizes that the best way to catch this killer, known as the Tooth Fairy, is to find a way to get inside the killer's mind. For Graham, that means confronting his past and facing his former nemesis, the now-incarcerated Lecter.

I LOVE the fact that there's no pause between Will starting to turn around and him being stabbed. No over-the-shoulder shot of Lecter just before, or any "introduction" like that to the attack. Just BAM, straight to it. Makes me feel like I'm being attacked by Dr. Lecter, almost.
A welcome change from most movies.
Agreed, none of that slow motion turn around and then two people looking at each other, maybe saying sorry, gotcha or some other bullshit phrase then getting into it just the attack as it probably would have happened.
Yes, that was jolting....to say the least!
What you don't like bullshit CGI army battles?
that's why i thought the scene where Hannibal murders Pazzi in "Hannibal" was far too hammy
another one - is that he is drawing his main weapon just as he realizes who Lecter is/in the moment he is stabbed - as if his body is perfectly in step with his mind.

No. It was the fact it was legible!
Now I understand why Lector attacked him.
So that means Will is the true villain, and Hannibal was trying to defend himself 😳
Moral of the story: Always have a backup weapon.
NOPE the moral of the story is wear body armor.
No the real moral is if you get stabbed with a knife stab your attacker with like 3 arrows at once
No, the REAL moral is that you should always be suspicious of people with ponytails.
Not at all, the actually moral of the story is to know there is something wrong when the hand writing of the doctor is readable
No, the real moral of the story is that he should have brought a bottle of white to accompany those sweetbreads.
Note how Dr Lecter does not attempt to remove the arrows, that would only cause bleeding and would definitely kill him, he knows this, unlike most action movies ever.
Ah what bad could possibly happen when he just ripps out the arrows....... that he pulls out his liver too? Well he could eat it then o___O
It was also because it was a vital spot and with multiple arrows, the right thing to do will always be to wait until you can recieve proper medical attention to remove the arrow but depending on the spot where you're hit and if you're in an active fight it would actually be wise to remove the arrow yourself or break the shaft if it's too deep as fighting with it could do more damage but Hannibal was definitely done either way and removing the arrows wouldn't have made a difference in fact keeping them in was likely what saved him from dying.
Or maybe that's just how the scene was written and it looks as if it were meant to be a deliberate character plot point.
I don't think this was an action movie.
Yeah, and he would need a colostomy
I really hate when people criticize Norton, this dude is great

For anyone that doesn't know or didn't know the book Larousse Gastronomique is about French cuisine, and contains recipes for French dishes and cooking techniques. Ris de veau translates to sweetbread. Sweetbread is “the culinary term for the thymus gland (in the throat) and the pancreas (near the stomach) in calves, lambs and pigs.” They are neither sweet or made of bread. I believe it is just a dish containing roasted meat.
Should have put a dust jacket on it titled "To Serve Man."
It reminds me of how Sweetmeats refers to a type of bread
H. Lecter ^
Interesting. I speak some butchery French and I assumed the ris de veau was cow veal. It shows how little I know, lol.
I don't understand why Lecter has to write that. He already knows what 'ris de veau' is. Its like you having a book and you have to write 'and all' over the word 'et. al'.
I love 0:07 because Dr. Lecter's face just shows how truly impressed he is with Will figuring out what was really going on. To Will it looks like disbelief, but Hannibal is very surprised with the acumen of his protégé.
Especially since Lecter's been misleading him while under the guise of a mentor who's assisting him in building a profile.
It's a cool way to look at it but I'd say the reaction is still disbelief albeit acted. Lecter has to pretend like the news are shocking and he knew nothing.
@@TheSuspectOnFoot Though disguised there's a hint of real surprise and disbelief in him, an undernote or true amazement at Will putting the pieces together, a whole lot must be going through Hannibal's mind, calculating his next move now that a layer of his cover has been blown and that his motivations are being expose, he must be truly pondering on wether to disposed of him or brainwash/gaslight him. Hannibal is surely in shock and in a pretty tough position.
I actually thought there's a little look of fear mixed in there too. The realisation he no longer has total control of the situation.
Love Anthony Hopkins and Edward Norton. They're just such good actors in a very tense scene.

The real crime here is that ponytail.
LMFAO BURIED.
What about that mustache?
Hey at least he didn't have draw-string pants...
It was to make him look younger than he was, or intended to
Ricardo Galvan ...Hopkins felt early references to “Lector’s own symphony”, lent itself to him resembling a conductor. The ribbon bound ponytail was a symbol of that position, and was particularly reserved for the educated elite. Hopkins did his homework, fashionable or not...
"You had disadvantages."
"What disadvantages?"
"You're insane."
he should have kept his killings and past in Europe but Hannibal hates useless people and loves to kill them.
"have you ever applied your keen senses on yourself, Doctor?" -Clarice (I can't remember the quote exactly). Both Clarice and Edward Norton character were able to show to Hannibal that he is clueless about his insanity - or perhaps - powerless in face of it.
I love the little grin that Dr. Lecter has on his face after being stabbed with the arrows. Many other directors/actors would've portrayed Lecter as furious, with an animalistic snarl and clenched fists, but Hopkins' expression of calm surprise, paired with the admiration of Will's courage and quick, decisive reaction somehow make Lecter an even more terrifying character. Imagine you stab someone with full intent to kill them, and they look at you like "Well well well, didn't see that coming. Nicely done, partner."
That would have been down to the director.
@@itskarl7575 Give some credit to Anthony Hopkins, whose legendary interpretation of Lecter extracted real depth and avoided the usual two-dimensional comic-book villain cliches. He's hardly a dumb puppet needing to be controlled by the director. The end result captured in the scene is likely the result of an effective partnership between a skilled director and a veteran actor.
@@denniskessler2349 The director is the one who decides how a character is supposed to react. The actor carries it out. The actor may be given some lee-way, but nothing which would alter the character. And this here, how Lecter reacts to being stabbed, is very much a director thing. This does not detract from Hopkins's acting abilities at all.

"Remarkable boy" that was Lecter's downfall. His hubris made him believe he was dealing with a boy when he was dealing with a man
Oh shut up you wannabe

Lol everyone stfu and brah stop trying to overthink stuff, he only calls him boy because he far outclasses him in experience and knowledge. His downfall was being a bit careless leaving his incriminating evidence in a main room accessible to anyone in his house then not killing will immediately. The end.
@@elsaanna4711 Actually the OP comment is right. He was so arrogant, or his "hubris" rather is what lead to his downfall. I mean, he literally left the book with evidence pointing to him because he never thought anyone would get so far into the case, let alone suspect him. And when he tried to gently set Norton down because he didn't want to kill him, Norton was then able to fight back. The way he managed to take Hannibal out, while *DYING* is impressive to the extreme! Like killing an enemy before dying of bleeding damage.
Except neither died.
Lessons learned from movies: Whenever you're by yourself "discovering" stuff about the bad guy, he's probably right behind you. So don't lose your situational awareness. Will could've glanced at the book while being turned forward so he would've been able to see Lecter in time.
Would've been funny though if Will would have been reading the book turned towards Dr. Lecter when he came in, without the shock surprise from behind. "Hey, I just realized you're the killer." "Yeah... this sort of ruined my whole entrance. Could you turn around again?"
God damn I love the dialogue between them. The detective is slowly piecing together that it's Lecter, and Lecter sees this so he intentionally says something specific that throws off his train of thought for a moment. He says "I almost had it" and Lecter taunts him like "it'll come to you"
Even before he's figured it out, Lecter uses his current status of respect to make Graham's self-doubt take over, "I don't know what I'm saying" (he knows what he's saying, he doesn't know what he's thinking, but Lecter knows) when he abandons the train of thought, he subconsciously picks up on the manipulation tactic and that's when he admits to Lecter "I almost had it" as if on a subconscious level he can see plainly what's happening but he doesn't trust himself enough to believe it until he's put the evidence together in his mind. At this point Lecter knows it's a matter of time before he has to deal with the issue so to imbibe Graham with a sense of long term security in his uncertainty he assures him of a follow up appointment the next morning before things escalate. (Lecter knows that it's a matter of time before Graham continues to piece evidence together as a result of his natural drive so he simply slows the process down by using his still respectful status as well as creating the illusion for Graham that he has time to figure it all out. It's brilliant, the subtle details woven into the dialogue that expose what kind of monster Lecter is, how he knows how to play his victims based fundamentally (in this case) on the false sense of trust that he is able to share with people as a result of his metaphoric 'god-like' transparency. A true fictional reflection of peak psychopathy

When Lecter says "Have you shared this with the Bureau?" Will should have realised the implications and said something like "Yes. I told a bunch of people before I came here. And I let them all know that I was heading over here to share it with you too. In fact, I was too tired to drive, so a couple of them gave me a lift and kindly agreed to wait for me."

I just noticed something!!
With the arrows, WILL GOT LECTER IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT LECTER GOT WILL!! Hence Lecter’s little smirk after he backs off. Not just because Will got him, but because he did so in an “eye for an eye” manner, like Will was still competing and playing the “game” (and ultimately won)

Everything is does and says is completely calculated.

@@The_Cooke i think richard meant it as a joke. don't take every word literally
@@bm-ub6zc well usually jokes are supposed to be funny
5. Attempted murder
2 absolutely phenomenal actors!
Such a well acted scene, the twists, acting and score make it so thrilling
1:36, you see Will starting to piece everything together when he glanced down at the floor after what he said.
The best intro to a movie!!!! I love this movie!!
Yup when I first saw this scene it got my heart rate up really good. The face that edward norton made once he realized the psycho cannibal was dr. lecter.
What I really like about this scene is that Will is like a young version of Hannibal (without being a psychopath), and he realizes that. I think that is why he smiles when is stabbed: in some way is proud of Will for his discovery
I love that look as he realizes he's been stabbed with the arrows. "Huh... Well goddamn. That was clever. Touche."
amazing acting performance from both Edward and Anthony
Super underrated prequel. Love it.
Edward Norton did this movie to help fund Spike Lee’s 25th Hour. Norton took his salary from this movie and gave every dollar to Spike Lee to help get 25th Hour green-lit
I love the whole hannibal lecter trilogy! For me, Anthony Hopkins is one of the best actors around! He can play any type of character and his acting is always excellent! Hannibal Lecter is one of his best performances! Congratulations to a great actor!
Although the movie Dracula didn't get great reviews all around, I felt Anthony Hopkins was very well cast as Van Helsing. I loved the way Hopkins injected wry British humor into the character at the dinner scene. A colleague asks about a vampire he recently killed with "Did she die in pain." Van Helsing (with cheer and nonchalance) "Oh, no no, we cut off her head and drove a stake through her heart." And Harker (Keanu Reeves) yells in shock "Doctor!!" It was short but brilliant and I knew for all his cantankerous ways and eccentricities that Francis F Coppola had picked the right man to play Van Helsing.
The ending is fvcked up
The most polite and courteous attempted murder in history
Being a murderous cannibal doesn't excuse bad manners.
What a beautiful, tense, psychologically superb scene. Does Will suspect Hannibal somewhat as the scene begins? Or does the “warm bath” that sneaks up on him and slides into his insides truly catch him off guard? Up to you to decide, I suppose. One thing I do know, Hannibal KNEW that at some point, this day would come. He knew Will would catch him eventually. That’s what attracted Hannibal to Will so much. He was Hannibal’s equal in that they’re both geniuses at what they do. I cannot commend Sir Anthony Hopkins enough for his 3 terrific portrayals of this absolutely terrifying villain, created with love and care (and possibly fear) by the great Thomas Harris. Long live Hannibal Lector.
Hannibal, Alex DeLarge, and The Joker
The best sociopaths of the silver screen.
If you like the movies look into the TV show its beautifully written.
Lauren R Believe me, I’ve seen it. It is a wonderful piece of television.
@@daustin8888 Great comment
No. Will had no clue at the beginning.
Nice

I love Anthony Hopkins....he is incredible in this type of part.
Just when Will was catching on Lecter stayed calm and pressured him a little, causing Will to back off, well played by Lecter.
"I think I’ll eat your heart."
Midnight Club Still Cancelled Soz Sweetbreads
That would be an awesome Hallmark Valentine's Day card. Inside it could read 'with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.' or something.
Jeffrey Dahmer
Two phenomenal actors. Loved Norton since Primal Fear. Hopkins can take any role and turn it to Gold. My favorites of his are "Legends of the Fall" and "Silence of the Lambs".
Anthony Hopkins would be ideal as a Sith Lord in the days of the Old Republic.
Nice bit of realism that Will's last shot was a miss. Even at that range, it would not be easy to shoot accurately with one hand while grievously wounded.
It looked like only two of his shots hit Lecter, so he missed most of his shots. Which is understandable given the circumstances, but he still got him.
Hopkins really brought Dr. Lecter to life
True but have you seen Mads Mikkelsen in the role? He's amazing
This movie is so good, just started watching the show, im hooked, no pun intended.
What show?
@Ahornblatt2000 Hannibal, they made it a show, it's only a few seasons because it got canceled. But it's pretty good until it became obvious it was getting canned.
@@gb213 Thank you!
