I really love the early scenes because it shows the relationship between Reagan and her mom so well, and then the later contrast is more impactful to me.
To me, instead of first and second half, i would cut it into thirds. The first 3rd is boring to me. The scenes before Reagan and her mum, all the desert stuff etc. 2nd and 3rd half are really good though, seeing the mum and daughters relationship and then seeing it suffer.
On the "the power of christ compells you" scene...sure, it could be a little silly how many times they repeat it, but honestly I think it's brilliant. Reagan floating off the bed is the movie's most supernatural moment yet, it's the peak of the scene's intensity, and instead of the tension snapping with either a big scare or some other flashy moment, it just holds on the two priests screaming in desperation for God to come to their aid, and then sloooowly dissipating as maybe it actually starts to work. And then Von Sydow caps it off perfectly when they get her down to the bed, quietly spitting out, "it is GOD that commands you".
I’ve always felt the same as you. The priests were trying to make sure that demon is out of her body no how many times they repeat the phrase. I always hold my breath from beginning of the levitation to when Regan softly lands on the bed.
One thing that never made sense to me is that the demon possessing Regan isn’t a Christian demon. His name is Pazuzu and he’s actually a Mesopotamian demon. Would Catholic exorcism rituals even work or would they just piss him off?
@@cashthecurator666 in the old testament there is mention of a wind demon that king Solomon faced, it's a common theory that the wind demon while not named in the old testament is meant to be Pazuzu.

Fun Facts: 1.) Father Karras’s actor, Jason Miller, was the father of Jason Patric, who played Michael in the Lost Boys. 2.) Paul Newman was interested in the role of Father Karras, which is most likely why he was name dropped.
WoW. I had no idea that Father Karras (Jason Miller) is Jason Patric's father. That is a fun fact! The Exorcist and The Lost Boys are some of my favorite movies. As an anthropology student, i like the opening scene simply cause the realistic part of archeological digs is you see one tiny artifact like that pazuzu head and you go running to tell people you found something. Probably the most accurate anthropology and archeological dig ive seen, but barely anyone gets it right cause digs are hella boring
The spider walk is absolutely necessary, and I would argue one of the most iconic shots in the entire movie. The first time I watched a version of this movie that DIDN'T have the spider walk it was so jarring that I almost had to stop the movie.
Same for me. I oringally watched a version of this movie without it when I was like 6. Watching it for a second time as a grown man with the spider walk sacred the crap out of me.
I definitely recommend The Version You've Never Seen over the theatrical. Not only is the spider walk great, but they added a bunch of flashing Pazuzu faces randomly throughout the movie, which I think is an amazing touch.

I find a lot of films from the 1970s and 1980s really focus on slow pacing and build up, it sometimes pays off, (Alien), and sometimes makes you feel a bit bored. I can still appreciate this film and the impact it had, good acting and the ending is worth it..

James, I just wanna say THANK YOU for being open about not being as huge a fan of this one. As a fellow person who absolutely respects it's place in horror history, but was never really a fan of it myself? It's so nice to hear from someone else who wasn't blown away with it.
Same! Ive always thought I was the only one who, while respecting it's affect on the genre, doesn't like it. I'm thrilled James was open about it! It seems like anyone who doesn't always gets a ton of hate
As someone who watched it for the first time recently, imo I totally understand its impact on the horror genre, but it’s nothing special by today’s standards. That spinal tap scene tho? Woof, I had to skip it.
I feel the same way about it. The only other Exorcist film I've seen is III, which I REALLY enjoyed. Stylistically and tonally it is definitely not for everyone, but George C Scott and Brad Dourif are on another level and the scares are just as effective as the original, except they haven't been memed to death in pop culture so they actually still hit
The symbolism of Father Damien Karras looking like he's rising up has always stuck with me. Also, the cross from the hospital where Roland Doe went through his exorcism (the novel and film's inspiration) is now on display at a museum in KS City.
I rewatched this week specifically for this Count, and hearing that the things that irk me about this movie also annoy other people is kind of a relief. Say anything negative about this movie in horror spaces, and you ruffle a LOT of feathers. Thanks for your honesty, James! Love you for it!

William Peter Blatty made a novel/film called The Ninth Configuration about the character at 09:35. It's brilliant. He's an astronaut & as she pees on the rug she says "you're going to die up there." He went crazy upon launch and ended up in a mental hospital. The Ninth Configuration is about him there, played by Walking Dead/The Rise of Leslie Vernon's Scott Wilson. He's amazing in it. One of the most peculiar films ever made.
I've only read the novel, personally, and seen bits and pieces of the movie, but it is indeed quite a read. I didn't know it was connected to The Exorcist, but hearing that makes some sense now. Highly recommend picking up the book.
Getting the Production Tales From Hell and then soon after the Kill Count for a movie is pretty sweet. Really feels like synergy and is extra informative and fun
Fun fact my dad actually lived down the street from the guy who did the make up effects for this movie and actually saw him selling some of the leftover props at a yard sale a little after the movie was complete. He sadly didn't buy any props though, though he mostly said it was bits of makeup, though I think he did mention a head prop was also there.
Saw this movie for the first time when I was 17 with the flu and a severe fever. Really spiced it up. Also, I appreciate your candid view on things you don't like. I feel like so many people base a huge portion of the fandoms on what they dislike and think is bad. Liking liking things is much more fun.
As someone in the field of archaeology the opening scene is fucking amazing! It’s easily one of the best depictions of what we do and I have so much respect for that opening scene.
I just saw this movie for the first time a couple years ago, and when it was over, I was sad, because I knew I’d never be able to see it for the first time ever again. I can only imagine how incredible and horrifying it would’ve been to see this in theaters when it came out. One of the greatest movies to ever release imo.
For as cursed as this production was and as many questionable or awful things happened because of people not caring about safety or health, the one thing I appreciate is that Father Karras visits the house with the intent to be a psychiatrist first. No joke, there's such a stereotype that exorcists just show up on command whenever someone starts behaving differently and "exorcise the demon" regardless of whatever's happening. There's a huge amount of disproving the standard stuff like psychological or psychiatric issues, various types of abuse, drug use, undisclosed connections or influences, etc. Exorcism is literally reserved for when nothing else could possibly be used to explain whatever's happening, and it's the one thing I'll actually give various churches as a point of praise without complicating matters. Granted, not every sect does the same level of scrutiny, but for those who do, it's nice to see that they're not being totally zealous with calling everything demonic possession.
From what ive seen, even in more scrupulous churches, it seems to come down to "we dont know what it is, so it must be demons" which can very easily cause people to not get the help they need. Id much rather they actually prove demons exist TBH.
Actual exorcisms have killed people and are useless, cruel torture sessions. Not a single person has ever been cured of anything from an exorcism because demons do not exist and demonic possession is not real. The church literally made it up to cover misdeeds against victims and blame victims for their symptoms while pointing at boogeymen. Its not coincidental that “possessions” only happen to and within communities that are taught to believe in them
While I wouldn't call it the scariest film I've ever seen, I adore the techniques, story and the acting, to say nothing of the controversies it created, be them during or after production. Without doubt, one of the most influential horror films ever made. I'll even agree with Friedkin in that the earlier hospital scenes with Regan getting X-rayed are more horrific than the exorcism itself.
Nah. The exorcism in film is real and visceral and creepy and personal and violent and terrifying. Pazuzu is a powerful demon. A sadistic son of a bitch too. They way he just desecrates Regan.. is scary as shit.. The voice acting, the physical acting, all of it. Horror Genius.. IMO of course!
The parody of this at the start of Scary Movie 2 was my introduction to this film. This feels like the kind of film that can't quite live up to the high praise and expectations that folks have when they watch it for the first time.
I think one thing is that it's been parodied and referenced so often that it's hard to remember what it would have been like to watch this when it first came out, when the popular image of exorcism was far, far less widespread, so the final confrontation between the priests and the demon would have been far more unsettling and alien. It also ties into the culture of the time--fear about the decline of tradition and the youth becoming stranger and more incomprehensible.
This, The Shining, and the Evil Dead remake are the only movies that still spook me every time I watch them. Also, I love James' transparency about his feelings on it, but also appreciate that he does not spend the whole time bashing something most people really love. Which by the way its his video and if choose to do that more power to him.
One thing I love about James is that when he critiques or gives an opinion, he makes sure to tell you that it’s his opinion and it should not be used as the standard for rating the movies. I honestly love it❤
Man I love this move. For me this is my all time favorite horror movie. Growing up very catholic then watching this movie in middle school not having very much expirence in horror at the time. But this movie has always stuck with me and it's my favorite horror movie of all time. Also The Exorcist 3 is a masterpiece as well. A great crime thriller/possession thriller
Hey James, The "wandering" beginning with concerns that start and stop abruptly is Friedkin wanting to do a cinema verite/ French New Wave/ Italian New Wave style film that not so much follows tropes or a plot or familiar story beats but feels more like a slice of life that the audience gets to see. It was pretty popular for directors to try and emulate this style of filmmaking since the mid fifties to late seventies as it was very much an auteur move to try and make the art belong to the artist directing. It also happened to be widely viewed or avante garde - anti Hollywood - at the time. I totally respect you not really caring for it. You still acknowledge it's acclaim and know quite a bit about it (probably even the above mansplanation I did that isn't even really that good). That's the point of the art and appreciating it. Sure we can talk about production history, what makes for interesting shot composition, or how an actor achieves a specific reaction from the audience out of their performance. It's just at the end of the day . . . Does the art speak to you. If it does, cool love it be a fan. If it doesn't, no problem there's plenty of other things to like.
I watched this movie for the first time when I heard this was the next kill count, now it’s one of my of my favorite movies, thank you James for this recommendation and The Thing
Repossessed (1990) should definitely get some love from James. It’s not only a parody of the possession genre but (in a way) can be seen as an unofficial sequel to The Exorcist. It even has Linda Blair cast as one of the leads.
James, I gotta say, you're not the only weird one here. I'm also not a huge fan of this film. It's a good film and it works for some but I've never really embraced it. I feel like I always get called out about it amongst my horror-loving friends for it so it's nice to know I'm not alone here.
I have never been able to finish this one because it’s so boring, and I’m sad about it because it’s so influential but it’s just never captured me, maybe after this kill count I’ll give another chance
Yeah, I agree, and it's not that scary I understand for the time it came out it was way ahead of its time but now today it just doesn't really hold up in my opinion
I have never seen this movie nor plan to see it, I am not a fan and of ghost horror movies with jump scares and religion stuff, not because of that but because even if it’s the worst movie I’ve seen I’ll still feel scared or jump because I usually don’t like things jumping out at me especially when those kinds of movies always do that
Here’s a weird little story of how I came to know about The Exorcist: I never actually seen the movie itself, but my first introduction was the car driving through hills jumpscare (I was like 12 and didn’t know who the character was), followed by the one specific scene in Son of the Mask where Tim is looking at Alvey through the rear view mirror and Alvey spins his head 360 degrees then projectile vomits (seen it multiple times throughout my childhood, had no idea it was an Exorcist easter egg), and I finally found out about correlation between the creepy faced little girl and The Exorcist from SrPelo’s Ooga Booga jumpscare. And now I’m about to come as close to watching the movie as I ever will with this kill count, so now I won’t have to remain clueless as to what this movie is even about and why it’s so popular.
19:30 I recognized this, but it was only because I saw it in the Boondocks episode where they excorsized Stinkmeaner from Tom's body and Uncle Ruckus was the stand in for Father Merrin
This will always be one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Saw it for the first time when I was 13 at like 3 am and it absolutely scared the shit out of me, and really instilled a love of slow-burn horror. Thanks for this one James and Dead Meat team!
Interestingly, I realized this year that the 2 times I’ve seen this movie I accidentally watched the directors cut, and I’ve always considered the spider walk to be the best scare in the film. didn’t realize until a few months ago that it wasn’t in the theatrical cut.
Fun facts about Pazuzu. Number one he was actually a protective deity of his worshipers and also a protector of pregnant women and newborn children and was also called apon to scare off other demons and evil spirits. Number two he was not just a "demon" he was also a primordial deity of the wind (especially the southern wind) who ruled over other wind spirits. he was also seen as a bringer of plague due to his control over wind and associations with underworld. So yeah he might be a demonic chaos goblin but he's a pretty cool dude when you respect him 😂❤
My little sister watched this movie once when she was in elementary school. A real horror movie fanatic, that one. And because of her watching it, I was woken up three times the following night due to her bad dreams.

I watch a lot of horror movies and never really get scared but the frame where you see the demons face in the dream actually scared me and the face still scares me to this day
Random demon: "Captain Howdy?" That's the best alias you could come up with?" Pazuzu: I needed something that could fool a 13-year-old girl, okay? Sue me.
In Blatty's novel, Chris infers that the name "Captain Howdy" sounds similar to "Howard" - Regan's biological dad is Howard Macneil whom Chris divorced. Thus, Chris suspected that Regan's relationship with "Captain Howdy" is Regan coping with her loneliness apart from her father.
@@07foxmulder Not at all. Story is far more interesting, has one of the best (if not the best jump scare in all of cinema), great subtle comedic moments in an otherwise dark and disturbing, almost murder mystery type film. Blatty who wrote the original Exorcist book directed the 3rd film (based on his other famous book, “Legion”); it is very much a writer’s film in that some of the cinematography isn’t the best, but the dialogue and editing is far superior. Plus, Brad Dourif gives an almost oscar nomination worthy performance in the limited screen time he has; he is truly terrifying to watch. Taste is subjective, but to accuse of “going against the grain” (the grain of what?) is simply a mean-spirited comment.
She literally got possessed because she played with the ouija board. She left herself open to demonic forces, and when she used something that was a gateway, she then slowly is infected and eventually possessed.
I claim no objectivity, but I truly think The Exorcist is the best film of all time. It has wonderfully scary moments, a supernatural theme, a wonderful climax and well written story, not to mention WONDERFUL acting. Overall, it seems like Friedkin achieved what he was looking for to PHENOMENAL effect. I have nothing but praise for this film.
Apparently, my friend's mother was friends with the actress Linda Blair (Reagen). She said that she could not believe that her mother let her star in it. Don't know if its true or not but either way Linda Blair shined in this role.

Yeah it’s for sure not as exhilarating but you can’t have the amazing second half without the set up of the first half.
To me, instead of first and second half, i would cut it into thirds. The first 3rd is boring to me. The scenes before Reagan and her mum, all the desert stuff etc. 2nd and 3rd half are really good though, seeing the mum and daughters relationship and then seeing it suffer.

Off to a crazy start

TBF James, Bohemian Rhapsody was also nominated for Best Editing, so i think you're safe to dismiss the academy on that category.

Hey James,
The "wandering" beginning with concerns that start and stop abruptly is Friedkin wanting to do a cinema verite/ French New Wave/ Italian New Wave style film that not so much follows tropes or a plot or familiar story beats but feels more like a slice of life that the audience gets to see.
Despite being over 50 years old, the practical effects are still mindblowing and only matched by the storytelling.

Dead Meat covering horror films nominated for Best Picture is a huge accomplishment. The team did an excellent work on this video.

8:50 "Little Girl posessed by Demon" - Blame the Girl said the Public XD
There's no hate quite like Christian love.
She literally got possessed because she played with the ouija board. She left herself open to demonic forces, and when she used something that was a gateway, she then slowly is infected and eventually possessed.

@@nollypollyTrue, not as bad as some other “religions” tho.

I feel ya, dude
The spider walk is awesome and my theater absolutely loved it!
Hasn’t even been public for 10 minutes, and it’s already getting age restricted let’s go!

I’m surprised that such iconic films like the Exorcist and Silence of the Lambs haven’t been covered on dead meat yet, and I’m glad they are now being Kill Counted
7:18 Fun fact, back in 2016, nearly 8 years before his retirement, Matpat did a theory on the original Exorcist, connecting it to the 2014 movie Ouija as well as it’s 2016 prequel Origin Of Evil.
