Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a 1987 American comedy film written, produced, and directed by John Hughes. It stars Steve Martin as Neal Page, a high-strung marketing executive, and John Candy as Del Griffith, a goodhearted but annoying shower curtain ring salesman. They share a three-day odyssey of misadventures trying to get Neal home to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving with his family. The film received critical acclaim, with many critics praising it for Hughes branching out from teen comedies, and for the performances of Candy and Martin.
Planes, Train and Automobiles was filmed in 85 days, mostly in Batavia, New York, and South Dayton, New York. A scene that takes place in St. Louis was filmed at Lambert International Airport. There was also a scene in Braidwood, Illinois at the seedy Sun Motel. Rewrites Hughes did during filming made the amount of footage he shot much larger than what the original screenplay needed.

@@kylereese4822 Like I said, we was in a big hurry to grow up and missed so much time. I never fully understood what the older folks was saying until I hit 25, then 30, then 40 I really got it. I appreciate cell phones and computers but we waste so much time with a screen. I see daily families out doing family things that I loved to do then but now everyone even the babies got a screen. No talking, jokes etc just stare at screen. I'm so glad we didn't have this. Ppl born before 2000 have no idea what it was like riding in cars playing the games we did, seeing the scenery, and really soaking up what we saw and where we went. The trip was as enjoyable as tge destination. Screens have their place as do toys etc but they're used too much. Kids see and know things we didn't until we were adults or alot older at least. I remember seeing side boob in teens and it was so exciting. Now that's nothing. We stayed pure and innocent alot longer. Now 12 yr olds are at same place we was at 18 plus. That's too much. Kids need to be kids. Wed watch pg13 movies at 12 and think we was doing such daring things. I recall seeing Full metal jacket at that age and was forever impressed. Main reason for wanting to join the Marines. Summers on the lake, seeing the Ford plant where my pap retired. All that is just distant memories. Ppl die and you just keep going. Life don't seem to have the wonder and excitement it did. Im thankful I get to live it through my kids. Learning about a subject by asking ppl, reading books and going to library using the dewy decimal system. Kids don't know what that is or who is dewy? I miss those decades so much.

Another great recap of another fave. Fun fact, you may or not recall I'm from Ontario, well once uat so was John Candy years ago a buddy was driving down the road in the small town of Newmarket Ontario where John had a home and he sees John beside him in a car at a stop light, trying not to display too much excitement for fear of looking like a complete idiot he smiled at John Candy who in return who gave him a big smile and a nod of the head. A very classy guy and true story

John Hughes was the bomb for movies! As was John Candy, SUCH an awesome guy--the real article, what you see is what you get! I heard one of his friends I believe, say he was kind to a fault. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about him. This is one of my all-time faves, I watch every Thanksgiving. And The Great Outdoors every summer. SO many quotes from these great movies! I enjoyed this tremendously, I've not seen anyone else do this one. Thanks Scott, this was great!

I remember when they were shooting in Lambert Airport in St. Louis---I was 12 and we were in the middle of moving from St. Louis to Chicago and my mom and I were taking a lot of flights. Ironically, after moving, my parents' friends lived in the Kenilworth neighborhood where Neil Page's house was. That movie takes me right back to places I recognize and remember in both Missouri and Illinois.
Note: they edited out a portion of the film where Neil and Del accidentally drive too far up into Wisconsin, which is why the trooper (played by Michael McKean) who pulls them over (which in the continuity of the film as edited should be in Illinois) is a Wisconsin trooper.

Thanks for spending the time and effort to track down these locations, I will say in the same way you were questioning the train station I will agree that it has changed a lot as the old building looked mostly wooden and the new only the that high ceiling. I would guess in the over thirty years that if they filmed it there it is now a newer building as too many things have been changed but that would be in line with making it more modern and energy efficient and less maintenance needed being brick not wood. Also when you were at the train station where it had a ramp now instead of a platform it is mostly due to the laws about making things more accessible for the handicapped. It looks to have some type of scenic train rides from that station still which is a small town common thing.

Hey Scott, you were almost there... The train station scene was not shot in Wilmette, instead it was shot @ the Woodstock Metra Station. In the early 2000's, I used to visit a coffee shop in the station that occupied the waiting room area where the scene was filmed. @ that time, the same double doors that can be seen behind Steve Martin & the light fixture hanging from the ceiling were still there.

You actually pinpointed areas in NYC (MY hometown). You also pinpointed areas outside of New York City, that I always wondered about like the braidwood inn and the other hotel with the burnt credit cards. Great movie. I have it in my collection. I think you make among the best filming locations videos. Even add in movie clips to line everything up. I appreciate all the long traveling and work you put into these.

Your awesome! You did an amazing job oh and we can hear you just fine when those trucks go by you on the road while your recording. 🤗 just wanted to let you know.
You really put your heart and soul into every recording you do because people think it’s just recording but there’s so much more and it isn’t easy. ✌🏻 peace out!!

Hey, I know I'm commenting on a 2 year old video, but you just popped up on my feed and I love this movie. As for the train station at the end of the film, I've always been convinced that this was filmed at Dune Park station in Indiana, on the South Shore Line. This was my childhood train station anytime I wanted to go to Chicago, and while I've never been able to 100% confirm this, the interior shots look exactly how that station used to look.

Great video. I doubt the last station you went to was the one used in the movie. The design of the interior you found looks to be late 70's/early 80's, and the period when Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was shot was at the height of the preservation movement, when preserving historic public spaces like the one in the movie background was in vogue.

The train used in the movie did still exist back in 2012, but not sure if it is still around today. It was with the New York & Lake Erie Railroad in Gowanda, New York. The old passenger coach cars they were riding on in the movie still had the "CONTRAK" logo painted on them.

Duder, you make EXCELLENT filming location videos. I am a TWD filming location fan myself. Constructive Criticism: less random talk ("oh, my keys in my pocket"/"I hate semis"/"Here comes the choo-choo! Choo-Choo!" Look buddy, love your endurance, love your commitment. Kill the silliness. Stick to the facts, chief. Best on you!
